Message from the Center Director 2012 was truly a year of growth for Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC. Following the grand opening of our new state-ofthe-art facility in October 2011, staff members worked tirelessly to make sure patients were comfortable in their new surroundings. Several services were added or expanded, including new treatment techniques, a patient navigation program, clinical trials and more. Through all of these changes, we used both our mission and the cancer continuum as our guide. According to the National Cancer Institute, the cancer continuum defines a patient’s treatment journey by highlighting the most important milestones they may face. These include prevention and early detection, diagnosis, treatment, survivorship and palliative care. Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC is proud to provide our patients and the Bayou Region community with resources that help in every step along the cancer continuum. From free screenings to a dedicated Supportive Care Services team, we offer patients a comprehensive treatment experience that addresses their specific needs. CLARKE CURRIE
Patients can be confident in this experience, as Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC was granted a Three-Year Accreditation with Commendation this year from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. Receiving this accreditation reaffirms that our community has an exceptional cancer care program right here, close to home. Throughout the pages of our 2012 Community Report, you will see the progress made across the entire cancer continuum. You will also see how the incredible generosity of our community is helping to advance our mission to improve survivorship and lessen the burden of cancer. EARLY DETECTION Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC is committed to meeting the needs of our community.
SURVIVORSHIP
With our mobile medical clinic, the Early Bird, we provide cancer screenings, educational outreach programs and other resources at no cost to those in need. In 2012, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC provided 17 screening events with 738 people being screened. From those screenings, 74 were navigated as a result of abnormal findings, and three were diagnosed with cancer. In addition, more than 1,000 people were

Serving as an essential link between patients and all care providers at the Center, our navigator guides patients through their treatment and helps them understand their diagnosis, options and resources available, as well as eliminate barriers to their care.

most advanced cancer-fighting technology available. In 2012, our treatment techniques were expanded to include VMAT (volumetric modulated arc therapy) on the Elekta Infinity™. This treatment technique delivers high doses of radiation to the tumor while minimizing the effects on surrounding healthy tissues. VMAT can also shorten treatment time. For our patients, this means increased comfort and improved accuracy. Our physicians also offer many clinical trials, including brain, breast, colorectal, head and neck, kidney, lung, melanoma, pancreas and prostate cancer studies. Each trial seeks to answer CANCER CONTINUUM:
scientific questions and to discover better ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer.

SURVIVORSHIP Celebrating Life Anyone living with a history of cancer – from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life – is considered a cancer survivor, according to the National Cancer Institute. In the United States, we have nearly 12 million cancer survivors. The Center celebrated local survivors with a luncheon in recognition of National Cancer Survivors Day. More than 50 survivors and their guests attended the annual event in June. “We are thrilled to celebrate life with all of our survivors and look forward to bringing hope and survivorship to more cancer survivors throughout the Bayou Region,” said Phyllis Peoples, president and CEO of TGMC.
Support Groups & Services BOSOM BUDDIES SUPPORT GROUP A monthly support group for breast cancer survivors that is held in Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC’s first floor conference room. Meets the fourth Wednesday of each month from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Lunch is provided every other month. For more information, call (985) 850-6308. NOSOTROS ~ 10 STEPS TO RECOVERY SUPPORT GROUP This support group is for all cancer patients and their families. Led by Oncologist Dr. Raul Doria, it is held in Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC’s first floor conference room. Meets the third Monday of each month at 6 p.m. For more information, call (985) 857-8093. LOOK GOOD FEEL BETTER ® A service provided by the American Cancer Society that offers makeovers, led by licensed cosmetologists, for all cancer patients. Held in Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC’s first floor conference room. Available during the months of January, March, May, July, September and November. For more information, call (985) 851-5744. CAMP BLUEBIRD An adult camp that allows cancer patients to enjoy various fun activities with other campers. Held annually in October. For more information, call (985) 850-6308. BEAUTIFUL YOU Beautiful You is a place where patients get to choose from a wide selection of wigs, hats, scarves and more – all free of charge. Beauty consultant Lisa Robicheaux is available to offer patients tips on makeup and alternate hairstyles, as well as support and encouragement. For more information, call (985) 850-6308.
Staff members from Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC participated in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in October at Nicholls State University. Race participants were treated to giveaways and early detection information. Survivors had the opportunity to take photos with their friends and family in a photo booth under the team’s tent. LADIES NIGHT OUT The 6th Annual Ladies Night Out cancer fundraising gala was held in March at the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center. Proceeds from the gala go toward the purchase of care items and services for patients such as blankets, nutritional supplements, transportation and more. The 2012 event raised nearly $60,000, including $12,000 raised through Brooke Haydel and Haydel Dermatology’s Annual Raffle. LOVE LIGHTS A TREE Each December, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC partners with the American Cancer Society to host Love Lights a Tree, a Christmas tree lighting ceremony in the TGMC Medical Atrium Auditorium to honor and memorialize all those who have survived or those who may have lost their lives to cancer.

The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life was held in April at the HoumaTerrebonne Civic Center. Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC, along with six TGMC teams, raised nearly $20,000.

Services team to help our patients and their families better understand their

options and other concerns. Composed of doctors, nurses, social workers, psychologists, counselors, chaplains, registered dietitians, pharmacists and rehabilitation specialists, the Supportive Care Services team works together with a palliative care specialist to offer support. The goal of palliative care is to improve patients’ quality of life by helping them better manage the symptoms they are experiencing.

Grant Support SUSAN G. KOMEN FOR THE CURE In 2012, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC continued its partnership with the Bayou Region Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure by supporting the Race for the Cure and other area events that focused on the fight against breast cancer. The Bayou Region Affiliate supports free breast screenings and follow-up care in our community for uninsured and under-insured adults.

Located in Louisville, Kentucky, The Gheens Foundation – established to continue the legacy of Edwin and Mary Jo Gheens – has generously ensured that the residents of the Bayou Region have access to the very latest imaging, Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) and Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) treatment technologies so patients do not have to travel away from home for state-of-the-art daily treatment.
UNITED WAY FOR SOUTH LOUISIANA Cancer treatment affects patients emotionally, medically and financially. In 2012, a grant from United Way for South Louisiana helped ensure that approximately 80 patients had fewer barriers to treatment. The grant also helped 31 uninsured and/or under-insured women received a free breast screening in their home community.
The 6th Annual Grand Isle Ladies Fishing Rodeo was held in October at Bridge Side Marina. Participants weighed in more than 300 fish in 14 categories. The weekend also featured door prizes, raffles, live auctions and a dance on Saturday night. The event raised $5,000 for Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC.

Evolution Training and Girl Friday hosted the 1st Annual Stache Bash in November. The event was held in recognition of “Movember” to help raise awareness about prostate cancer and men’s health. Houma’s only professional golf tournament! The 2012 Mary Bird Perkins at TGMC Fakiér Open featured a fun-filled week of golf, food, entertainment and more – all for a great cause.
2011 marked the first year the Adams Golf Pro Tour Series partnered with Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC. In 2012, Fakiér Jewelers became the title sponsor, and the Mary Bird Perkins at TGMC Fakiér Open was born. “Having a partner like Fakiér is important for this type of event,” said Amy Ponson, director of development, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC. “The tournament is about raising awareness and funds for the Center’s mission. Fakiér believes in the mission, and together we plan to make a difference in the Bayou Region.” The Taste of the Tournament Par-Tee and Auction, Pro-Am and professional golf tournament took place in April at Ellendale Country Club in Houma. Proceeds benefited Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC.

A STORY OF HOPE “I never felt like just a name on a folder. They treat you like family at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC.” When I was told I had breast cancer, I thought, what’s my son going to do without me?
