Commuters suffer as conflict continues

T

he ongoing dispute between Vukanini and Megabus has one clear loser… the commuters. The bus system works on tickets sold at the beginning of each month. This means that most of the bus users have already paid for their bus tickets. “I have already paid for the bus!” said one commuter to The Bulletin and continued: “Now I have to pay for taxi as well?” Megabus (Unitrans) obtained a court order against Vukanini as well as Taxi Boss, Fanyana Sibanyoni on 4 February that read as follow: Having heard counsel and considered the matter and documents filed, the following is ordered: 1. The rules relating to service and

time periods are dispensed with and this application is disposed of as one of urgency in terms of the provisions of Rule 6(12) of the Uniform Rules; 2. The first respondent and its members and the second respondent, are interdicted and restrained from: 2.1. Preventing any of the applicant’s employees and any of the applicant’s busses from gaining free access to, or to freely exit, the applicant’s bus depots or parking stations in the Leslie/Leandra, Kriel, Kinross, Evander, Embalenhle, Bethal, Standerton and Secunda areas in Mpumalanga; 2.2. Obstructing in any way the access roads to, or the exit routes

from, the aforesaid bus depots or parking stations; 2.3. Preventing the applicant’s passengers or prospective passengers, from making use of the applicant’s bus services; 2.4. Intimidating and/or interfering with the applicant’s passengers or prospective passengers; 2.5. Interfering with the applicant’s bus services or stopping any of the applicant’s busses; and 2.6. Damaging or vandalising any of the applicant’s busses or other vehicles or property; 3. The first respondent and second respondent are to pay the costs of this application. It would appear that Vukanini Taxi

Association is not going to take this lying down, as the expression goes. The Megabus services have only partially been restored. Commuters are still walking from Charlie 3 to eMbalenhle. Sources told The Bulletin that an incident took place last week during which shots were fired. Fortunately, no one was hurt. According to our sources, commuters stopped some taxis and heated arguments ensued, resulting in the shots fired. The Bulletin also learned that the main reason for the dispute is the transport route permits, especially between Kinross and Secunda. Once again it appears that money is the root of all the problems.

SANEF CONDEMNS ATTACK ON A JOURNALIST AND UNICEF EMPLOYEE The Bulletin received calls from concerned friends and colleagues regarding an alleged assault on the editor, Encee van Huyssteen. He was told that a journalist was assaulted by a group of people on Thursday night. While the editor has received threats and even death threats it never resulted in violence against any of The Bulletin's staff members. The Bulletin has earned a reputation for bringing news from danger areas and will continue to do so. Attacking journalists would not help the cause of the people. The Bulletin obtained a press statement from The South African National Editors' Forum (Sanef) regarding the assault of a freelance journalist and two other people, one of which represents UNICEF. The statement is placed as received! SANEF Statement: February 8, 2020 The South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF) condemns, in the strongest terms, the physical assault of Frayintermedia journalist, Desmond Latham; a female staff member; and a female employee from UNICEF by a group of men at eMbalenhle township

near Secunda on Thursday evening. At about 4.45 pm on Thursday, Latham and his colleagues were filming a project for UNICEF on children in eMbalenhle township. They had no idea that there was a conflict about an ongoing battle at eMbalenhle township where the VUKTA taxi association is fighting a local bus company, Megabus. “We had stopped at the side of the road (corner R546 and eMbalenhle road) to film Secunda. The men out of the blue assaulted us. We had no idea what was going on other than they were criminals engaged in a robbery – and they were extremely angry and determined to assault journalists.” “It was only when we arrived at the police station that the SAPS informed us of the tension and the road had been a flashpoint for taxi drivers who had been gathering there for a few days forcing people out of buses. “There has been no report about this (story), and we were attacked without warning… Police were involved

because the UNICEF person is from Brazil,” said Latham. “These men are punching women. They appear to be (allegedly) hired by the association… The taxi company is targeting reporters,” he said. SANEF is deeply concerned that journalists are increasingly facing violence and intimidation for exercising their fundamental right to freedom of expression in this country. Women journalists face specific dangers and are especially vulnerable and sometimes subjected to mob-related violence when covering public events, often in reprisal for their work. As a result, they suffer from trauma and the emotional impact of experiencing physical attacks which lead to anxiety, insomnia, irritation and or posttraumatic stress disorder, which can cause incapacitating feelings of horror, fear and despair. SANEF was told that while the victims were not severely hurt, the attackers stole their Canon 5D and lens and damaged their vehicle. Lathan warned journalists who may be

heading to Secunda to keep a sharp eye out for “mobs of men”. A case of assault and robbery was registered at eMbalenhle police station. SANEF believes that the intention was to intimidate journalists so that they are reluctant to write, research or speak about the territorial battle and violence in the taxi industry in Mpumalanga. SANEF joins UNESCO and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in efforts to strengthen the capacity of Member States to implement, voluntarily, mechanisms to prevent attacks against journalists, to protect journalists, and to prosecute the perpetrators of these attacks. We call on the Office of President Cyril Ramaphosa to take a leaf from UNESCO’s action plan that focuses on activities to raise awareness and train representatives of the judiciary, law enforcement agencies and parliaments on the importance of freedom of the press and the safety of journalists. A commitment to the protection of journalists allows journalists and media professionals to receive, produce and share information without facing physical or moral threats.

Seven suspects expected to appear in court for murder of businessman Seven suspects are expected to appear at the Balfour Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 10 February, facing a charge of murder and other related charges. The police investigation has successfully led to the arrest of the suspects in connection with the death of Jabulani Isaac Nkosi. The seventh suspect to be nabbed by police in this case is a 64-year-old Maria Naniwe Nkabinde, the mother-in-law of Jabulani Nkosi, who was killed at his home in Balfour on 19 January around 08h15. 58-year-old Jabulani Nkosi, was a well-known owner of a funeral parlour in the area and his untimely death raised eyebrows. After police probed the matter, they unearthed information which revealed that his wife as well as other suspects, including some family members, were allegedly part of the plot who orchestrated his death. On Wednesday, 5 February, police arrested Nkabinde and she had briefly appeared in the Balfour Magistrate Court on Wednesday, 5 February, following her arrest at Standerton on 4 February. The suspect was remanded in custody and is expected to join her fellow (6) suspects in court on Monday. 47-year-old Muntu Mashinini, as well as 44-year-old Sipho Dube, Thokozani Radebe and Zanele Malindisa, both 29-years-old, including the wife, 41-year-old Busi Mitta Nkosi, 17-yearold girl and 64-year-old Maria Naniwe Nkabinde are all facing serious allegations of murder. The suspects are expected to apply for bail on their appearance.

According to reports, Jabulani Nkosi, was at his home when the suspects entered his house and fired several shots at him before fleeing the scene. Police and paramedics were apparently notified by a member of the public about the incident and they swiftly responded. Upon arrival, Nkosi was declared dead by the medical personnel on the scene. A case of murder was opened and police immediately began with the investigation. Part of the investigation looks into an attempted murder case in which Nkosi was nearly killed after being shot by two armed men, who entered his house, wearing balaclava’s. This particular incident occurred on 8 January at about 23h15, whereby two suspects found him in the house, started to fight him however, Nkosi fought back and in the process, he was shot. In the first shooting incident, the businessman was rushed to the nearby hospital where he received medical treatment. Nkosi was discharged from hospital on Thursday, 16 January, but three days later, he was shot at his home again. The determined police worked tirelessly where they connected all the dots and managed to make a breakthrough in their probe which led to the arrest of the suspects. The motive for the killing is unknown at this stage.

Provincial Commissioner warns traffic officials not to be involved in criminal activities Provincial Commissioner of police in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma has issued a strong warning after the involvement of a Traffic Official in fraud. The unwavering words of the General comes after a Court appearance of 22-year-old Siphosethu Mnisi who appeared in the Belfast Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 6 February, for fraud where a state fuel card was allegedly used to refuel a privately-owned vehicle. “All Law Enforcement Agencies are expected to uphold the law and conduct themselves in a manner that is befitting to the job they have been called to do on behalf of the nation. We cannot allow a situation where rotten elements continue to tarnish our image by tangling themselves in criminal acts whereas they still wear our uniform. If any Law Enforcement Agent is found to have committed crime, they will face the full might of the law just like anyone that decides to break the law, they will be dealt with, without any fear or favour,” said General Zuma. According to the information on the fraud case, Siphosethu Mnisi, a Provincial Traffic Official was arrested by police at Machadodorp on 5 February after it came to the attention of police that Mnisi was allegedly involved in criminality whereby he fraudulently used state resources for personal gains. Reports revealed that on Monday, 3 February, Mnisi’s female friend or family arrived at a fuel station at Machadodorp in an SUV where she requested one of the petrol attendants to fill up her car. As expected, that one should make payment after a purchase, the petrol attendant requested the lady to pay, but the lady explained that someone will make payment on her behalf. A Provincial Traffic vehicle arrived with Mnisi, who allegedly produced government’s petrol card and made the payment despite the petrol attendant’s concern that this was not a normal practice. Mnisi insisted and even assured the

petrol attendant that he should not worry as his (Mnisi’s) superiors are very much aware of what he was doing and he is allowed to carry out such transaction. A transaction of about R800 was made. The managers later notified police about the incident whereby a case of fraud was opened and hence Mnisi’s arrest on Wednesday, 5 February and his court appearance on 7 February. He was released on R500,00 bail and expected to appear again in the same court on Wednesday, 12 February 2020.

Father to appear for allegations of rape of his daughters A 43-year-old suspect was expected to appear on 7 February facing charges of rape. He was arrested on Tuesday, 4 February, by police in Mpumalanga on allegations of a rape case involving his own 13-year-old girl in Masoyi. According to reports, on Monday, 3 February, the teenage girl was sleeping with her siblings when her father entered their bedroom. The man was not coming to faithfully check up on her daughters as a father should, but he had lustful intentions. It is said that he allegedly whispered in the young girl’s ear that she must not wake her other sisters up. This man then allegedly raped her little daughter and warned her that if she ever breathed a word to anybody, he will kill her and then kill her siblings. Preliminary investigation has also revealed that this man has allegedly raped his other 16-year-old daughter as well and threatened to kill her if she ever told a soul about the ordeal. Because of fear, the 16-year-old kept the secret with her until the day when the 13-year-old sister broke her silence and that was when she reported the matter too. The following day, 4 February, the 13-year-old brave victim went to school and told her story to her teacher. The victim also mentioned to the teacher that it was not the first time that her father raped her and further disclosed that her other sister is also a victim. Police were notified about the incident and a case of rape was immediately opened at Masoyi SAPS and handed over to the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit. The man was arrested by police and charged with two counts of rape. He was expected to appear at the Masoyi Periodical Court on Friday, 7 February. The Provincial Commissioner of police in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma, has reiterated his condemnation of rape of the young girls. “Children in our country are facing a real challenge in their lives because parents have turned against them. Instead of grooming them (kids) to be tomorrow’s leaders, there are parents who are determined to destroy chances of a bright future for these children. Such evil and heartless criminals cannot share a space with the law-abiding citizens. They should rather be locked up for good. I urge the Detectives, the Prosecution team as well as the Judiciary to close all loopholes in this case and ensure that the accused gets a maximum sentence,” said General Zuma.

The pair where further sentenced to 12 months imprisonment each for illegal immigration, both sentences have been ordered to run concurrently. Additionally, the court has declared the pair unfit to possess firearms. The Acting Provincial Head of The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation in Mpumalanga, Brigadier Obed Ngwenya has applauded the good work done by the investigating and prosecutorial teams. He vowed that to ensure that all that break the law will be dealt with harshly.

Teenager arrested for grandpa’s murder A 16-year-old boy has been arrested in Dullstroom on Sunday, 2 February, at about 15:30, following the murder of his 63-year-old grandfather. According to information, the teenager had a heated argument with his grandfather to a point where he allegedly went to his grandfather’s room, grabbed a pellet gun, came back and allegedly shot the old man with it. The pensioner fell down motionless. A member of the public notified police about the incident. Police and Paramedics quickly rushed to the scene where the old man was unfortunately declared dead by the medical personnel. Preliminary investigation unearthed that the man had a gunshot wound in his upper body and the boy was immediately charged with the old man’s murder. The firearm has been taken in for ballistic testing. The police are working together with Probation Officers in this case and the case docket will be handed over to the Director of Public Prosecution for a decision. The teenager is expected to appear in court soon. The Provincial Commissioner of police in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma, has indicated that the law must take its course.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints. – Ephesians 6:10-18

Sniper Protection Services: Important Decision The focus on Sniper Security over the past weeks made for interesting reading. Unfortunately, it also resulted in the loss of 64 jobs according to the owner, Walter Stander. The dispute between the former employees and Sniper Security took some nasty turns when some loyal to Walter claimed that they have received death threats and threats that they might be raped. They also had to endure abuse in public with employees of a rival company allegedly hurling insults and abuse at the Sniper workers. Walter phoned The Bulletin and said that he decided to close the business. “I have paid for my past but people still want to dig it out and shame me with it,” Walter said. Sniper released the following statement to The Bulletin during last week: Over the last few weeks, Sniper Protection Services, has fallen victim to mediocre media sensation, instigated by a former disgruntled employee. We have been ridiculed, our lives have been threatened and our employees have been harassed, while doing their work. The picture painted by the media about the way I run our business, is not only an insult to our employees and myself, it also does not give a true reflection

of the day to day operations of our company. We have offered our community which include the farmers a valuable service and we are proud of our employees for their effort and that they stood with us during this time. We also received many messages of encouragement and support from customers and friends while dealing with this unfortunate event. We have not been offered a fair opportunity by the media, other than a second rated “What’s app voice note “ to give an honest statement of the affairs of our business. We have obtained legal advice and will handle the matter with our legal team. Unfortunately, with all this in mind, as well as the negative impact this had on our business, employees and customers, we had to take a decision on the future of our company that will have a negative impact on the more than forty (40) employees we have employed. As from today, Sniper Protection Services, will cease its operations with immediate effect. Yesterday we have paid all our employees, (those who have given us their banking details), their salaries for January 2020. We thank our customers for the opportunity to have served them as

Police are recruting reservists Would you like to be a reservist? Now is your chance! For a number of years, communities bear the brunt of the police policies for not recruiting reservists. Successful squads, such as our own famous bike squad were disbanded. Now, finally, the police have started with an active campaign to recruit volunteers or reservists. A reservist performs voluntary duty in the South African Police Service without any expectation of receiving compensation for such duty. The South African Police Service invites members of the community that is energetic, intelligent, physically and mentally fit and that is dedicated with the desire to serving the country on a voluntary basis as Reservists, to assist the South African Police in the fight against crime. Successful Reservists will perform general functional policing duties in sectors at station level. As such, they will be carrying out one or more of the following functions: * Prevent, combat and investigate crime, * Maintain public order, * Protect and secure the inhabitants of the Republic and their property, * Uphold and enforce the law In terms of the Regulations of the South African Reserve Police Service you may be called up by the National Commissioner to perform duties in order to strengthen and support the Police in performing its constitutional

mandate as set out in Section 205 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996 and that you will not receive remuneration (unless so called up). Reservists will be expected to perform a minimum of sixteen (16) hours voluntary duty per month. Selected candidates will be invited to attend the Reservist Training Programme. The Reservist Training Programme will not be a once-off event and therefore successful candidates will have to avail themselves to attend the training sessions, after hours and on weekends due to your work commitments. The training will consist of Orientation, distance learning, contact sessions, formative and summative assessments. Interested candidates will have to avail themselves to attend certain Learning areas (Orientation to SAPS / Law / Community Service Centre / Crime Investigation / Crime Prevention / Street Survival). well as our employees for their hard work and being part of our company. As the late Elvis Presley said: Truth is like the sun. You can shut it out for a time, but it isn’t going away.” We thank you. Walter Stander DIRECTOR PSiRA also investigated Sniper Security and decided to suspend their registration. This effectively means that Sniper are no longer able to render services as a Security company. Here is their statement: PRIVATE SECURITY REGULATOR REINS IN SNIPER PROTECTION SERVICES CENTURION, 06 February 2020- Post its media statement dated 23 January 2020, the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSiRA) has

effectively suspended the registration of Sniper Protection Services and its Director, Mr Walter Stander, for alleged improper conduct. Section 26 1(a) of PSiR Act 56 of 2001, prescribes that, “If there is a prima facie case of improper conduct in terms of this Act, or of the commission of an offence referred to in the Schedule, against a security service provider, the Authority may suspend the registration of the security service provider, (a) pending the conclusion of an investigation or enquiry by the Authority into the alleged improper conduct.” On the strength of the overwhelming evidence gathered, the Authority has therefore suspended all the operations of this security service provider. The Authority is also considering the applicability of Section 26(4)(iii) which states that if the security officer/ Director is deemed no longer a fit and proper person to render a security service; his or her registration could be withdrawn. Accordingly, in line with the provisions of Section 26(3) of the Act, the effect of this suspension means that Sniper Protection Services and/or its Directors may not render any security service, unless the prior written permission of the Authority has been obtained, but during the period of such suspension the security service provider is still bound by all the obligations of a registered security service provider provided for in the Act.

Waarom is dit so? Jy plaas niks oor jou verlede nie. Is daar ‘n spesifieke rede daarvoor?

Charles Dickens se Tale of two cities.

Spies se volledige versameling digbundels, Antjie Krog, Herman Charles Bosman, Sheila Cussons. Teen R2-00 stuk. My versameling Andrè P Brink is volledig, danksy die biblioteek. The Dark Origins of Valentine’s Day men sacrificed a goat and a dog, then whipped women with the hides of the animals they had just slain. The Roman romantics “were drunk. They were naked,” says Noel Lenski, a historian at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Young women would actually line up for the men to hit them, Lenski says. They believed this would make them fertile. The brutal fete included a matchmaking lottery, in which young men drew the names of women from a jar. The couple would then be, um, coupled up for the duration of the festival — or longer, if the match was right. The ancient Romans may also be responsible for the name of our modern day of love. Emperor Claudius II executed two men — both named Valentine — on Feb. 14 of different years in the 3rd century A.D. Their martyrdom was honoured by the Catholic Church with the celebration of St. Valentine’s Day. Later, Pope Gelasius I muddled things in the 5th century by combining St. Valentine’s Day with Lupercalia to expel the pagan rituals. But the festival was more of a theatrical interpretation of what it had once been. Lenski adds, “It was a little more of a drunken revel, but the Christians put clothes back on it. That didn’t stop it from being a day of fertility and love.” Around the same time, the Normans celebrated Galatin’s Day. Galatin meant “lover of women.” That was likely confused with St. Valentine’s Day at some point, in part because they sound alike. Shakespeare In Love

A drawing depicts the death of St. Valentine — one of them, anyway. The Romans executed two men by that name on Feb. 14 of different years in the 3rd century A.D. Hulton Archive/Getty Images Valentine’s Day is a time to celebrate romance and love and kissy-face fealty. But the origins of this festival of candy and cupids are actually dark, bloody — and a bit muddled. Though no one has pinpointed the exact origin

of the holiday, one good place to start is ancient Rome, where men hit on women by, well, hitting them. Those Wild and Crazy Romans From Feb. 13 to 15, the Romans celebrated the feast of Lupercalia. The

As the years went on, the holiday grew sweeter. Chaucer and Shakespeare romanticised it in their work and it gained popularity throughout Britain and the rest of Europe. Handmade paper cards became the tokens-dujour in the Middle Ages. Eventually, the tradition made its way to the New World. The industrial revolution ushered in factory-made cards in the 19th century. And in 1913, Hallmark Cards of Kansas City, Mo., began mass producing valentines. February has not been the same since. Today, the holiday is big business: According to market research firm IBIS World, Valentine’s Day sales reached $17.6 billion last year; this year’s sales are expected to total $18.6 billion. But that commercialisation has spoiled the day for many. Helen Fisher, a sociologist at Rutgers University, says we have only ourselves to blame. “This isn’t a command performance,” she says. “If people didn’t want to buy Hallmark cards, they would not be bought, and Hallmark would go out of business.” And so, the celebration of Valentine’s Day goes on, in varied ways. Many will break the bank buying jewellery and flowers for their beloveds. Others will celebrate in a SAD (that’s Single Awareness Day) way, dining alone and binging on self-gifted chocolates. A few may even be spending this day the same way the early Romans did. But let’s not go there. - Arnie Siepel (https://www. npr.org/2011/02/14/133693152/ the-dark-origins-of-valentines-day

The Myths and the legends of the metal community, history of the metal genre in South Africa, Part 3

Photo: https://www.facebook.com/agroband/photos/a.707384282653876/707384502653854/?type=3&theater It’s the early 1990’s and there’s something different in the air, a band formed in Johannesburg by the name of Agro. True heavy metal, folk metal, melodic death metal, they did it all thrown into a multi-instrumental blender. The most interesting music in the metal genre of South Africa, if you’ve never heard of them, I strongly urge you to go check them out! Sammy from Sacrifist (mentioned in Part 2) was asked the million-rand

question: who exactly started it all? Sammy answered and elaborated: “One of the first bands we’d ever drive hours to go and see was Agro. If you’re looking for who started it all, I’m sure they’re pretty close to that.” In the early 90’s this non-stereotypical metal band was shaking the heads of South Africans everywhere, making a new kind of ruckus, they added new life to the genre combined with aggression and melody as well as constant entertainment in a scene

saturated by Florida-style death metal clones. Through the years a lot of musical and line-up changes occurred, they had overcome a lot of hurdles and challenges revealing itself, forcing them to evolve and fight past it. Agro makes use of a more traditional heavy metal sound, by use of violin and harmonic keyboards, carried by blasting drums and twin-guitar attack, resulting in melodic power! Thrash metal with aggressive, yet audible vocals, adding depth and personality. They shot through the hearts of the crowd in true heavy metal spirit with a line of live shows that offered

audiences a profound, professional musicianship combined with a hedonistic, larger than life, tongue-incheek attitude, fuelled by beer and a true rock ‘n roll spirit. These skilled musicians have played alongside some of the world’s best rock and metal acts locally and abroad: Blind Guardian, Nocturnal Rites, Deity’s Muse, Ensiferum, Fokofpolisiekar and becoming the archetype. “Showing that they have the ability to enthral not only metal enthusiasts but they also have gained fans from across all musical tastes.” One for all and all for one! - Henco

SARLA and FNB take up a joint challenge for charity

Last year, The Bulletin reported about the MRP Foundation and the amazing work they do. Some of their partners include: Absa, SPAR and the SA Rugby Legends. Below is a press release from the SA Rugby Legends, who teamed up with FNB to support charity. One of the South African Rugby Legends Association’s (SARLA) primary objectives is to provide ongoing support for the upliftment and education of children. So, the Rugby Legends were only too happy to step up when Preggie Pillay, CEO of Commercial Property at FNB, issued a charity challenge to her colleague, Rugby Legend and Provincial Head of Property Finance for FNB Business: KZN, Justin Swart. The Amaoti settlement is Durban’s largest informal settlement. Amaoti

and its surrounding areas are affected by high levels of poverty, unemployment and social issues – including high numbers of orphans, vulnerable children and prevalent HIV – all of which have a direct impact on the kids who attend schools in the area. Lungisani Indlela is a Christian-based NPO that caters for the ever-growing needs of local Amaoti community. Lungisani Indlela’s vision is to empower the people and children of Amaoti through education and community development. And they currently accommodate 350 children at their Amaoti school. The Sarasvati Primary School in the Frasers informal settlement in Frasers, Tongaat, was opened on 12 March 1943. And with its 77th birthday approaching, this school also faces

several social and financial challenges due to unavoidable circumstances. Sarasvati is a government school and a no-fee institution, which accommodates underprivileged learners from the Frasers community and other surrounding communities (currently about 400 children from Grade R to Grade 7). When Preggie Pillay heard of the two schools’ circumstances, she issued a challenge to FNB’s Commercial Property Finance Division, calling on Executive Members to dig deep and contribute to these two worthy causes. Within a matter of hours, R 30 000 had been raised by 21 CPF Exco Members. Staff members contributed an additional R 3200. And the funds were put towards much-needed school shoes for 750 learners at the two schools.

Justin Swart then enlisted SARLA, who came on board, along with sponsor, Thirsti Water, to drop off the new shoes at the two schools and deliver some much-appreciated Thirsti Water for the kids. They also provided treats and ready-made maize porridge supplies. SARLA CEO, Stefan Terblanche, said: “We’re so glad that Justin and FNB brought SARLA on board to help these kids. It was truly a wonderful moment when the kids all received their brand-new shoes and supplies and we hope we helped them, at least in some small way, find some hope in the world.” For more information on SARLA please visit: http://www.sarugbylegends.com Facebook - @ SARugbyLegendsAssociation Twitter - @SARugbyLegends Instagram – sarugbylegends
