To my lovely readers, let’s not beat around the bush… We are knackered 24 hours of the day, 7 days a week! Whoever told us it was going to get easier, lied to our faces! We don’t have time to do anything for ourselves, we microvave coffee an upteen amount of times, we eat leftover kids food and brushing your hair has become a thing of the past! When those magical five minutes come about and you find yourself at a loss (ha, we wish!) I want you to follow these three easy steps… 1. Put the kettle on and make a FRESH beverage (or even better get someone else to make you one!) 2. Pick up the first edition of Cherubs Magazine and enjoy finding out all you need to know in one place. 3. Email me at editor@cherubsmagazine.com and let me know what you think. As a parent myself (to “adorable” twins) I know what you’re going through, I sympathize, I get it and I want to do something to ease the pain. Because a happy parent is a better one. Enjoy the read (and the hot drink!)

1. Tearing Paper We all love destroying things (or is that my inner Hulk coming to the forefront), so why not a rip-roaring success with anything you have to hand (or fingers): Old envelopes, colourful tissue paper, unpaid bill reminders etc. Just be careful that you don’t leave any cheques or winning lottery tickets on low flying coffee tables.
2. Clothes Pegs Hooray! The sun is out! For goodness sake and many expletives! The sun has gone! Hanging your clothes on the line is like playing a domesticated version of the Hokey Cokey. So, get those little thumbs and fingers squeezing pegs open and shut like crocodile jaws, making a new fashion statement by pegging them on their clothes or if you are feeling arty, why not make a crown, cat or hedgehog! After all, “That’s what it’s all about!”
4. Play Dough Where would we be without Play Dough (or even Doh)? How ever you spell it, it’s brilliant stuff for squishing and squashing, clapping and splatting and creating things (even if all the colours turn to brown and it ends up in the carpet). Make it, buy it by the pot or purchase an activity (I was very fond of the Monster Barber Shop when I was a youngster). Even if you are not particularly artistic, I defy you not to be able to make a worm!
3. Cup Stacking Some people are fond of diamonds. Others prefer pearls. I happen to love, love, love plastic cups (obviously a very cheap date). My hands are up (don’t tickle me): they are not good for the environment (and generally too flimsy to use for drinking purposes), but they make brilliant towers and amazing fortresses. These were a big hit in our household (if only we’d known how much joy this bought to our daughter, then Santa might have been able to pay for a weekend away that year, or at least a new pair of pants).
These are just a few ideas to get those tiny hands busy (and don’t forget to join in too)! In a blink of an eye these tiny people will be slightly larger people using their super fine motor skills abilities for tidying up their rooms, washing up and painting your house. Although please, please don’t quote me on this!!!

Fine Motor Skills are the coordination of small muscles in the fingers and hands. Strengthening these skills help your child gain their independence in everyday tasks such as clothing, cleaning and feeding themselves and leading onto cutting, drawing, writing and beyond! But before we get to the “beyond” (primary, secondary school, university, officially moving out, purchasing a cat and leaving you alone, all alone! BLUB!) here are some cheap and cheerful activities that you can do at home to build up those tiny fingers and boost your child’s self-esteem:

Palmers Green High School is ranked 2nd in The Sunday Times national league table for small independent schools 2017. Headmistress, Mrs Wendy Kempster, explains the reasons behind the School’s success and why girls exceed expectations. Founded in 1905 by Miss Alice Hum, PGHS has been providing an exceptional education for over 100 years. I would describe the School as a hidden gem in the suburbs of North London and one that I am very proud to lead. PGHS is a highly successful, small independent school serving the local area where we specialise in educating girls. Individuals are nurtured, successes are celebrated and the girls’ contribution to the community is greatly valued. Our pupils’ academic success stems from a number of factors which include a broad and balanced curriculum, specialist subject teaching from a young age, excellent staff-pupil ratios and an effective partnership with families. There is an authentic feeling of being one family where strong friendships are formed and extend beyond year groups. Our highly successful alumnae return eagerly to share their experiences and offer guidance.
Successful first
steps
Equipping girls for success
Throughout the Lower School (Year 1 to Year 6), small class sizes enable staff to identify and nurture the individual potential of each pupil. Learning is enhanced by specialist teaching in a range of subjects including Art, Drama, Music, PE and Design and Technology. There are many trips to support the curriculum and the School runs over 80 clubs a week. By the time they reach Year 6, girls have developed into mature, independent learners and are ready for the smooth transition into our Senior School.
Preparation for moving
on
As they reach the end of Year 11, girls are able to draw on the outstanding careers guidance they have received to make informed choices on their next steps. We have excellent links with the top sixth forms locally, where PGHS girls are welcomed due to their outstanding exam results and renowned work ethic. From September, PGHS will be the only independent all-girls school in the local area. If you are interested in a place for your daughter or would like to have a personalised tour, please call our Admissions Office on 020 8886 1135 to check the latest availability. Occasional places do become available and we accept mid-year entry in all year groups up to Year 10. Going to PGHS was honestly the best decision of my life. I made friends for life, had fun and was pushed to achieve my full academic potential.” “Going to PGHS was honestly the best decision of my life. I made friends for life, had fun and was pushed to achieve my full academic potential.” ~ Year 11 Leaver
Our Senior School provides pupils with the knowledge, confidence and resilience required for success. We welcome girls from local primary schools who join us in Year 7 after sitting the 11+ Entrance & Scholarship exam. All girls settle in quickly and the high quality, specialist teaching in small classes enables them to make rapid progress and achieve impressive results across all subjects. PGHS has excellent STEM facilities including a fully equipped Design & Technology room, a well-resourced ICT suite and dedicated Science labs. “I had already decided by age 11 that I was going to become a Structural Engineer and had discovered a passion for Maths and Science. There is no doubt that if I hadn’t been part of the unique PGHS environment that provides encouragement and support, I would not be who I am today.”~ Lucy Collins, Submarine Naval Architect at UK Ministry of Defence Pupils are also able to develop their creative talents with visits from prizewinning authors, poets, illustrators, Olympic medalists and professional artists from the Royal Academy. Recently, we were delighted to welcome back one of our past pupils, Imani Shola, to talk to the Seniors about her debut book, Heart Shards and Lip Balm which is a collection of self-care poetry and affirmative notes written for young women and young people across Britain. Imani was a straight A* student and is currently studying at Cambridge University. ~ Imani Shola, A* PGHS Alumna, Cambridge student & award-winning poet

Girls begin their learning journey in our Nursery or Reception class, where the emphasis is on making learning fun. With excellent resources inside and outside to foster exploration, imagination and independence, the Early Years’ experience at PGHS sets a firm foundation for future learning.

As a result, girls exceed beyond expectations across the key stages and this was reflected in our GCSE results in 2017 where 75% of grades were A*/A and a quarter of the year group achieved straight A*/As.

The Importance of Preparing Children for Secondary Transfer At GPPS we believe that it is our responsibility to prepare children for secondary transfer and to support parents through this process. We are not an academically selective school on entry (what can you really assess in a 3-4-year-old on?) because we feel it is much more important to have parents who are fully supportive of their child’s education and will work with us to get the very best out of them. In preparing for the school entrance exams, both parents and child with the teachers’ support must first create mutually agreed and realistic targets. The word ‘realistic’ is crucial here, however counterintuitive it may feel. Obviously, there is nothing wrong with aiming for the highest possible results or the “best” schools, but it is important for this ambition to be tempered with a realistic perspective of what the child is likely to achieve Support of parents begins with an informal information-giving session in Year 4 and a list of all the schools with dates of open days, entry process details and exam dates. We like to encourage our parents to visit schools, with their children from Year 4 so they can start to see which type of school would be suitable for their child. This may be a local state school, grammar school or an independent school. Whichever they choose, we believe that preparations for all children are necessary. From January in Year 4 through to Year 6 we hold additional after school classes for the children to sit exam papers from a range of schools in Maths and English each week, we analyse the results to identify which areas require revising. We have timetabled lessons within the school day to prepare children for Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. We help children to prepare a personal profile so that they can prepare for interview by reminding themselves of their skills and achievements. We prepare the children by taking additional exams within lessons, teach interview techniques and set up mock interviews to ensure that they are prepared in every way. In Year 5 we meet with parents to give general advice on looking at and shortlisting schools. At this meeting we also outline the demands of Year 5 and what parents can expect in the way of homework and how things will work in school. Later on in the year we will meet with parents again on an individual basis to discuss in detail the child’s progress, school choices, give advice on these choices and any subject areas the child needs to work on, how to support your child through the process in maths, English and general issues to do with exam practice. The summer exams in Year 5 are sat in the hall to emulate an official exam. Once the exams are over and results are out we offer parents meetings to help decide if they are lucky enough to have a choice and/or what to do next if they have not received their chosen school. Throughout the process it is important to remember and encourage parents that we are a mixed ability school and our advice to them is based on our knowledge of the individual children in our care. This advice is based not only on the child’s capabilities but where we feel they will thrive and the best school to suit their personalities.

GIULIANA RUBINIA - EDMONTON COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP
Community Partnership (ECP) Charity. ECP is an alliance of 20 schools and members of the local community. Working together we manage a range of local projects and events that help improve the lives of children, young people, their families and the wider community in the local area of Edmonton, in London. ECP helps raise aspirations and improve outcomes for Edmonton people in this diverse and unique part of North London. The programme has a profound impact on the lives of many children. It exposes them to new possibilities and opportunities. Helps to reengage students with school, learn new skills, discover new talents and provide opportunities to meet new people and make friends. Most of all it’s fun! But funding for this event is hard to find. In fact, at one stage it didn’t look likely that a finale could take place as funding had run out. Thankfully Sponsors such as the philanthropist Sir Harvey McGrath and the charities Edmonton Community Partnership and Enfield Sounds Great as well as the continued generosity of Pineapple Performing Arts has allowed this programme to continue, flourish and provide a lasting legacy. Whilst the event took place on one day, the skills learnt, confidence gained and memories made will have a lasting impact on many of our local children. But for now, attention turns to find funding to keep this extremely valuable programme going for future years, after all, every child has the right to shine.
Sir Harvey and Lady Allison are firm supporters of and proud to be associated with the Glee project as it offers young people the opportunity to learn about performing arts, make new friends, to perform and, most importantly, HAVE FUN!

On a blisteringly hot Monday afternoon, 16 weeks of preparing and practising under the stewardship of Pineapple Performing Arts Tutors in a 2-hour competition, where each school performed either a musical theatre number or a street dance routine to be crowned Glee champions. But for all these children, every single one of them is a winner. Edmonton Glee changes lives. It gives disadvantaged children the opportunity to experience the world of performing arts in an inclusive, safe and engaging way. Children who ordinarily wouldn’t have the opportunity to dance, sing and act on stage, get to develop new skills and perform in a London theatre, showing the world what they can do. And that’s not it. Children and young adults have the chance to win life-changing scholarships with the prestigious Pineapple Performing Arts company so they can continue fulfilling their potential. Glee brings together 19 Primary, Secondary, Pupil referral Units and Special Schools within Edmonton, one of the country’s most deprived areas. Pineapple Performing Arts provides each school with 16 weeks’ tuition in singing, dancing and drama, which culminate in a grand finale performance event at a prestigious London theatre, which this year was at the Hackney Empire, where the Glee Champions are crowned. The clubs are fully inclusive and encourage vulnerable children to take part, including those with disabilities, Special Educational Needs and those who are excluded/at risk of exclusion from school. Why is a Montessori Nursery at the top of everyone’s list when choosing where to send your little ones? We visited Angela at Right Start Montessori situated in the grounds of Botany Bay Cricket Club, to learn a little bit more about the ‘Montessori Way.’ The setting offers quality preschool education for children aged 2-5 years, following the Montessori ethos. Offering a spacious, rural environment for children to explore, with extensive parking for drop off and pick up. ‘Right Start’ is definitely the place for your child to start their education journey. Maria Montessori Doctor and Educator was born in Italy in 1870. She believed the senses were important to learning and development and created a range of equipment to enhance this. Maria believed that education began at birth and that children are by nature eager learners. Her aim was to harness this natural ability to learn by presenting concrete experiences and
materials to help children learn abstract principles. She believed children learn • Through movement particularly that of the hand which she linked to the development of intelligence • In an environment designed to meet their needs • Learn best through the senses To that end the classroom consists of a mixed aged group and is designed to meet the needs of the children at periods when they are most interested and motivated. It was no wonder they achieved an ‘Outstanding’ rating from Ofsted as an ‘Early Years Provider’. All the staff show dedication and go that extra mile to aid each child in their learning. The pre-school is a secure and happy environment offering a supportive setting where children feel valued and happy as they go about their activities.

That’s why Philippa and Simon Guest stepped up to the plate and created Little Cook Box. And now they are celebrating the launch of their nationwide meal kit subscription box service that has a choice of 12 launch meal kits aimed at 5 to 11 year olds. As busy working parents themselves, they felt something could be done to make mealtimes easier. “It’s an unrelenting challenge: feeding little critics day-in and day-out with no end in sight” said Philippa. “We struggled every evening, and were burnt-out by the end of the week!” So Little Cook Box was born - a subscription based, courier delivered answer to all our problems.....A convenient way to simplify cooking for children, and a way to inject some fun into the process, making
meal times stress free for kids and parents. One box = one delivery, and one meal kit = one child’s evening meal. Each kit contains all the fresh ingredients, peeled, washed and pre-chopped in a convenient tray with simple to follow instructions - all easily cooked in 20-30 minutes. Imagine....no rush-hour supermarket sprint after work, no stressy decisions about what to have tonight, no raised voices when the kids don’t agree - just hassle free, deliciously nutritious food in one hit, and everyone is happy. Little Cook Box’s nutritional experts, together with specially chosen producers and suppliers, help to remove all the guesswork and confusion about what’s best to feed our children. Every Little Cook Box is grounded in encouraging your children to participate in the preparation and cooking of healthy food; increasing the chances
of them trying new flavours, textures and widening their food horizons. It’s the little things that count though.... literally count, as every meal is nutritionally balanced, portion controlled and designed to have the optimum number of calories for growing junior school children. So completely removing the worry about whether it’s too much or too little, and whether you have the right mix of food on the plate. Winner winner...Little Cook Box dinner! Remarkably, Little Cook Box had already established a considerable and engaged social media following even before they launched. This is a clear indication of the strength of feeling and desire for a great product that helps to solve one of parenting’s great challenges. There are great plans ahead too - Simon went on to say that “our already engaged social media following has been fantastic in suggesting new product lines for Little Cook Box. . We absolutely intend to listen to our customers, and use their feedback to develop our product range accordingly.”

Makes 6 Ingredients • 1 cup jumbo oats • 2 cups Greek yoghurt • 1/3 cup honey • 3 strawberries • 8 raspberries • 10 blueberries • 4 blackberries • @unicorn superfoods powders (optional) Method • Mix the honey, oats and yoghurt in a large bowl • Take 4 smaller bowls and put a heaped spoon of the mixture in each one, keeping some back in the big bowl. • If using, in each of the four smaller bowls put a little of the @unicornsuperfoods powders to get the colour you want. I used about half a teaspoon of each. • Prepare your fruit, slice some, mash some and keep some whole. • Now you’re ready to start filling your popsicle moulds. • Take a mould and start filling it, alternating plain mixture, coloured mixture and fruit till completely full. • I mixed strawberries with the beetroot powder, blueberries with the blue spirulina, blackberries with black goji berry and raspberries with the pink pitaya powder. (If not using just omit this step) • When all the moulds are full, insert a popsicle stick into each one and set in the freezer overnight. • To remove from the moulds run under hot water for a few seconds. If you don’t eat dairy, coconut yoghurts or any dairy free alternative works equally well. These really are the perfect kiddy (and adult) breakfast... nutritious, delicious, quick and easy and so much fun!
Watermelon Pizza Slices With kids and food I find it’s important to keep things interesting. It helps nurture a natural interest in food which is so important in developing that all important healthy relationship with food. They usually love fruit and it’s natural sweetness but it’s still a good idea to keep things interesting for them and sometimes that just means changing the way I present something. I recently came across golden watermelon so had to try it and this snack idea seemed like the perfect way to use it. Regular and so delicious red watermelon would of course work just a well. All you need to do is cut a cross section of the watermelon, cut into wedges and top with whatever fruit you like. My kids absolutely loved it!
Rainbow Pasta Shapes This is the easiest and quickest pasta dish ever but it’s still so tasty and healthy. I usually have all these ingredients to hand so on an evening when I only have ten minutes to cook this is what I make. Boil and drain your pasta and dress with olive oil, chopped parsley, lemon zest, chilli flakes (optional) and a little salt. I normally serve this with broccoli with the same dressing. Just throw the broccoli florets in the same boiling water with the pasta for the last couple of minutes of cooking so you don’t even need to use a second pan.
Spinach ‘HULK’ Muffins Apart from the taste, the best thing about them is they pack a serious spinach punch. It’s what gives them that incredible green colour without having any impact on the flavour. So you get goodness without compromising taste. Win win as far as I’m concerned. And a great way to get kids to eat veggies, without them even realising. Definitely a mummy win! Just a little note ... if you really like cinnamon add more, if you don’t like it you can leave it out. Makes 12 Ingredients • 2 1/2 cups spelt flour • 1 tablespoon cinnamon • 2 teaspoons baking powder • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 3/4 cup almond milk • 1/3 cup agave syrup • 1 large ripe banana • 1 teaspoon vanilla • 1 large egg • 3/4 cup canola oil • 3 cups spinach (150g). Make sure you pack the cups really well with the spinach. Method • Preheat oven to 180C and line a muffin tray with muffin cases • Sieve the flour, cinnamon, salt and baking powder into a large bowl • Put the rest of the ingredients in a blender. Blend till mixed well and all the spinach is completely broken down. • Pour the wet mix into the flour mix and using a spatula, mix till combined. • Pour into your lined muffin tray and bake for about 25 mins. They keep well in an airtight container for a few days (but never last that long in our house)

These are a little sweet and cake like in texture so kids love them! I give them to my kids for breakfast with almond or peanut butter and fruit (usually bananas) but they’re also delicious on their own or with a cup of tea.

A few notes about the ingredients: In this dish I use Waitrose cooks ingredients frozen parsley. When added to the warm pasta it instantly defrosts and tastes like fresh. A freezer must have! For the lemons make sure you get unwaxed lemons, otherwise you will be eating wax rather than the delicious yellow lemon zest which is where all the flavour is. The chilli is entirely optional and this is just as yummy without it but I love the stuff! And finally, because of how simple this dish is, the olive oil needs to be the best quality you can get your hands on.
Throughout Enfield this summer there are many fantastic activities to keep the kids entertained and active.

Grandparents are now the number 1 childcare solution, above nursery day care and childminders, which saves parents over £16 billion a year in fees*. According to research conducted by the Grandparent Hub, around a third of grandparents look after their grandchildren a few times a week, with 72% planning day trips and other activities. The majority prefer activities where they can get involved rather than accompanying them to clubs and classes, with 88% favouring playing games, 85% visiting the park and 80% reading together. But how easy is it to find new activities and ideas that can keep the kids interested? The Grandparent Hub offers exactly that – an online community for grandparents to find places to go and ideas on entertaining grandchildren. The Grandparent Hub provides the chance to share experiences, gain inspiration for things to do, offers, and educational resources. Lighthearted and tongue in cheek, The Grandparent Hub aims to bring out the positive and fun side of being a grandparent. It also offers the opportunity to pass on our collective, accumulated wisdom (a very important gift of the past to the future and sometimes overlooked) and to be a supportive network for each other. The real secret weapon to parenthood! WITH MAIWENN & ANDREA Yoga and pilates are currently the fastest growing industries at present, They both come highly recommended by doctors and health care specialists alike and are becoming an essential part of our daily routine to help combat the detrimental effects of 21st century fast past living.
on a retreat of their own! A melting pot to share new teachings, a eulyses contract which kept them drawn to each other under one the common goal, to share their passion and make the world a calmer more peaceful place one human at a time….and then motherhood happened!
The combination of these two forms of movement coupled with meditation and a nutritious plant based diet can make for a life changing experience...
Yoga gave pants gave way to whatever didn’t have a stain on it and crop tops were temporarily swapped for muffin tops.
Enter Andrea Gatril and Mawenn Langlois the power house behind the UK team from 1love 1heart retreats. The company was an idea born whilst stumbling across Asia on their own paths to all things alignment, asanas and enlightenment. They soon discovered that with each others inspiration and influence just how limitless they could be. This discovery lead to the idea that one day they might re-connect
Not being able to get out to yoga/pilates classes they decided to have daily facetime sessions between Liverpool and Hertfordshire and teach each other! “Maiwenn, myself influence, inspire and compliment one another. Finding the perfect balance between grace and strength. Marrying the two disciplines has totally shaped our lives, our bodies and our minds... I love my yoga wife!” ~ Andrea
Maiwenn put Andrea thru her paces with a postnatal pilates program, Andrea stretched Maiwenn’s body back into alignment with Ashtanga yoga classes. Starting off very slow working around screaming babies, nappy changes, tired mummies it didn’t matter if hair wasn’t washed or even if they had got dressed,as most sessions were done in their pjs!!!
The retreats provide a holistic approach to wellness, with the physical, mental and nutritional aspects perfectly balanced. Ranging from day, to weekend, to week long across the uk, Europe and Asia! (But we would recommend the Yorkshire retreat for new parent needed that 2 day break!) Not only are Andrea and Maiwenn amazing teachers and guides, highly knowledgeable and fun, they can really cook. Clean, vegan and extremely tasty!
“I woke up on Sunday with the feeling that I wasn’t ready to go home. I was finding my feet and my flow and I wanted to learn more after Andrea and Maiwenn had taught me so much. With my core engaged and armed with a long list of tips, books, apps and equipment, I left the Old Granary, ready to embark on the next stage of my journey and delve deeper into my yoga practice. I had a newfound love of Ashtanga, a better understanding of pilates and a real appreciation of how two incredible teachers can create such perfect synergy between the two.” ~ Jennifer Mculloch - Guest

The daily sessions happened come rain or shine all in the comfort of their own homes. The combination of these 2 practices absolutely transformed their mummy bodies to strong toned super mamas and got them both in better shape post baby than pre baby.
“Our retreats are a simply unique experience because each one feels like home. We genuinely love each other! The secret to a good working relationship: Talking to each other almost everyday, regardless of time differences or toddler tantrums or nappy changes! listening, understanding and above all respecting the “magic” that makes us as women unique.
Exercise tips for women I often get asked why curl ups are not ideal postnatal exercises. Although they are great for building the rectus abdominals they are a big NO-NO when it comes to abdominal separation, disc problems and can further pull your body into a rounded slumped position. It is imperative that we master the basics particularly postnatal! and fine tune our bodies movements to enable them to function fully after the strains of pregnancy, labour and carrying our little lumps of love around all day! Here are a few exercises designed to safely build your obliques, stimulate healthy pelvic floor function, activate transverse abdominals and perfect those peachy posteriors! In a nut shell... all the muscles you need to develop a strong baby lifting centre! I LOVE that you can physically see the waist draw in after a few weeks with my clients utilising these basic exercises! Remember small daily practice will win the race...and be kind to yourselves. It has taken 9months to make room for baby. Your organs and spine can take 9months easily to work their way back!

• Breath in, maintaining the connection to your centre. • Breathe out as you slide one leg away along the floor in line with your hip, keeping your pelvis and spine stable and in neutral. • Breath into the back of your ribcage as you return the leg to the starting position. Repeat five times with each leg Knee Drops Knee drops and opposite arm opening are a great way to access the transverse abdominals. (The muscles that suck our tummy in!) You can tie a band around the legs or hold a band in the hands to add resistance. • Keep the pelvis and torso still and stable, exhale as you draw arm and leg away from the centre line of the body. • Inhale to return with control Side Plank Mobilises the spine and develops shoulder strength and stability whilst activating the obliques. • Inhale and lift the pelvis and circle the arm overhead • exhale as you return the head, chest and arm to the start position on the mat. Repeat up to five times each side Spine Curls Promotes sequential mobilisation of the spine and hips, while strengthening the back, abdominals, buttocks and the backs of the legs. • Breath in and then breath out as you curl your pelvis underneath you, imprinting your lower back into the mat before beginning to wheel it off the mat one vertebra at a time. • Breath in and hold this position • Breath out as you roll the spine back down, softening the breastbone and wheeling once again carefully through each section. • Breath in as you release the pelvis back to neutral position Repeat up to ten times

What is Cranial Osteopathy? Childbirth is one of the most stressful processes our bodies will experience. The baby is subjected to enormous trauma and stresses, as the uterus pushes to deliver the baby against the resistance of the birth canal. The baby has to twist and turn as it squeezes through the pelvis, however the baby’s head has an amazing capability to absorb these stresses. In order to reduce the size of the head, the soft bones overlap as the baby travels through the birth canal during labour, if other means of intervention like forceps or a ventouse (vacuum) is used this can further stress the baby’s head. This can lead to many babies being born with odd shaped heads, such as cone shape, asymmetry (eyes and ears not being level) and bruising. Although this normally improves within the first couple of weeks, as the baby cries and feeds, sometimes this doesn’t improve causing the baby some discomfort.

OUR HEALTH SERVICE CAN NO LONGER AFFORD TECHNOLOGICAL, MEDICALISED BIRTH – BUT HAVE WE COME TO RELY ON IT TOO MUCH ANYWAY? BY CHRISTINE HILL With the introduction of technologicallymanaged birth in the early 20th century, both mothers and midwives began to lose their ability to birth instinctively and naturally. Before the introduction of chemical pain killers (opioids or morphine), epidurals and caesareans, mothers listened to their bodies and the advice of other women and midwives to work with their bodies. They trusted their instincts and it proved a reliable guide. At one time, the required qualification for becoming a midwife was just that she had had a baby. Pregnant women also benefited from the advice and support of experienced members of their extended families. It was widely understood that one of the most important criteria to assist a speedy, smooth and comfortable natural birth (without drugs) was the confidence and relaxation of the mother. Midwives also became experienced and skilled at dealing with complications such as breech births and malpositioned babies, but with the more recent preference for an automatic C-Section, few still have these skills. (Midwife Val Clarke ‘Instinctive Birthing’) Now we hear that the maternity system is under-funded and there is understaffing of midwives. One midwife has to care for several birthing mothers at the same time. Midwives are worried that they can no longer deliver the kind of care they want to give as they become technicians, chronologically managing birth, unable to allow birth to take its natural course. Midwives are leaving the NHS to become independent midwives, and rediscovering their skills in supporting unmedicalised births. It is well documented that midwives maintaining continuity of care and supporting mothers in a safe and
familiar environment have a significantly reduced rate of interventions and C-sections. The births are calmer, more positive experiences too. In the interests of safety and pain relief, a medically managed birth is considered the norm within our current maternity system, with interventions such as pain relief, offered as a prophylactic, before a problem occurs. However, many experts now question the wisdom of routine medicalised births. We are learning that unnecessary interventions carry a high price in terms of the emotional and physical health of baby, mother and the family as a whole. There are risks attached to using too much, as well as too little medical support. Dr Sears says ‘Use technology wisely – if abused, technology can actually become the problem.’ (Sears and Sears, ‘The Birth Book’). For example, pain relief drugs given too early can stall a labour, leading to a more difficult and prolonged birth. Based on experience in other cultures, it is estimated that at least 80-90% of women, given the right support and education, can birth their babies naturally and comfortably with only minimal medical attention. If we relearn how to birth naturally, and stop relying unnecessarily on technology, we can free up limited medical resources for those unusual emergency situations when it really is vital. (Savings? Epidural - £500, C-Section - £2,000) We will have better, safer, more peaceful births into the bargain! How can you learn to birth instinctively? One answer is to attend HYPNOBIRTHING Natural Childbirth Preparation Classes.

What symptoms can cranial osteopathy help? • Crying, screaming, irritability, restlessness • Feeding difficulties • Sickness, colic and wind • Sleep disturbances • Infrequent bowel movement
NATURE’

A treatment for this is called Cranial Osteopathy, this is a very gentle and subtle osteopathic treatment that gently encourages the release of stresses throughout the body. There are small fluctuations of movement within the body called involuntary motion, an osteopath places their hands on a child’s head and body feeling for a gentle expansion and contraction of all the tissues. When these are distressed during childbirth, cranial osteopathy can make a child feel more comfortable by releasing these. The technique is very subtle and gentle and most of the time looks like all were are doing is holding the baby.

of Moving? When loading the van, ensure all the big and bulky items are left to last or at the back of the van and boxes to the front. This will allow you the room to move boxes to their allocated rooms, without having the sofa or other bulky items in your way. Label all boxes for which room they are destined for, without doing this it will cause a lot of wasted time and lifting. Undo the furniture items which are bulky such as; beds, wardrobes, sofas and alike. Ideally do this by the day before of the move, as you will be surprised how this can hold you up on the day. We would recommend a minimum of 3 strong adults to help with the lifting. This will allow them to have breaks in between lifting and will ensure it is not too painstaking for the lifters. Drop the kids at a family or friends house if possible. If not make sure you have an IPad or mobile phone to hand, and a safe and secure place where they can be watched but are out of the way of harm. Start your move on the day as early as possible, as unfortunately you will have to build up the furniture you have taken apart and the kids will need somewhere to sleep as well as you! Now if you throw children into the mix, this can become a nightmare to handle, as many of our team has found out the hard way, with our very own children when moving! It is very important to ensure when you have children, you need to have everything packed and organised (which we know is easier said than done), especially if you are not spending hundreds on a removal company (a lot less painstaking may we add, if you could afford the extra). Nevertheless here are just a few tips to ensure that this experience of moving yourself is not as stressful as it can be:

What makes someone want to become a vegan? Lifestyle
42
“The Pleasing Vegan” tells us their story and how they came to start a business and develop their love of all things vegan…
When Arzu and her partner Dev became vegan, it encouraged them to lead a healthier lifestyle. They found that over time following a Vegan diet and healthier way of living resonated in an increased positivity and energy to life. They felt this developed them spiritually thus making them even more conscious and aware of what they ate, the quality of their actions got them thinking “what more can we do to protect our planet and all living beings.” The idea behind “The Pleasing Vegan” came from them both having grown up in a Turkish Cypriot household where they developed the love for Mediterranean food. They told Cherubs “our transition to eating vegan has allowed us to experiment with recipes from our older generations, who we
found cooked regularly without meat and dairy, as these were seen as luxuries when they were younger.” By them including these treasured family recipes and developing their own to accommodate the ever-changing diets and lifestyles of today they developed a true passion for cooking these dishes. They have created a modern twist on their Cypriot style bakery and dishes such as; the popular bulgur/içli köftes (bulgur wheat traditionally filled with lamb mince and then deep fried) that they offer with the choice of fillings, seitan, soya mince and mushroom or their Adana köfte traditionally made with lamb or chicken mince that is alternatively made with soya or seitan mince. The Pleasing Vegan also decided to provide an alternative way of eating sweet vegan foods (we all know that

Whilst Nana and Granddad nights under canvas may be over, the introduction of stylish new static caravans for 2018 at Trevornick has seen an upsurge in extended family bookings – because of all the extra comfort, space and luxury they provide. With many families now living far away from each other, they’re just the thing to get everyone together, but can also mean that parents may even get an evening or two out by themselves. Indeed, Trevornick is uniquely placed to cater for
parents, grandparents and kids of all ages alike (as well as being very dog friendly) and the swanky static caravans appeal to a different audience of adult groups too – friends organising get-togethers or reunions and parents without children who also want excitement and adventure, but home comforts on tap. Trevornick’s 26 smart new caravans offer fashionable and inviting décor and all the mod cons you’d expect of a top-notch holiday home. Positioned on beautifully landscaped tiers with far and wide
reaching views, they’re the perfect new and exciting way to experience the magic of Trevornick in even more comfort. Choose from three different styles of interiors – contemporary chic, laidback coastal and stylish comfort - with two or three bedrooms and each kitted out with a fully equipped kitchen, plush living area with large flatscreen TV, sumptuous beds to snuggle in, powerful shower rooms, as well as USB charging points plus Wi-Fi access. You can even relax on your own private decking or dine alfresco when the sun shines.

48 Hours in… Looking for a super-cool retro vibe from beach destinations that are just 1.5 hours by train from London? Dotted along the coast of south-east England are three captivating beachside towns that have reinvented themselves into stylish destinations over the last few years – Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate. In this coastal corner of Kent, known as Isle of Thanet, you’ll find a buzzing contemporary arts and culture scene married with quirky attractions, elegant Regency squares combined with maritime history, all packaged together with that quintessential British seaside charm. Time to check in: This is an area of Kent that boasts a raft of gorgeous guesthouses and B&Bs, each with their own unique character, many influenced in style by the area’s rich history, and all within various price ranges. For a touch of luxury, check out Bleak House Broadstairs, not only can you visit eminent author Charles Dickens' study and the smuggling museum, you can stay in rooms such as ‘Fagin’s Superior Double’ (no pickpockets here though!) or the David Copperfield suite. Elsewhere, Broadstairs’ Yarrow Hotel is housed in a 16th-century building now designed with all the comforts of a luxury boutique hotel, while in Margate, the Reading Rooms boutique B&B is housed in a building dating back to the 1760s; its décor is contemporary yet boasts original floorto-ceiling windows and polished antique floorboards. Margate’s pretty Sands Hotel captures those stunning sea views perfectly, easily enjoyed as you sip cocktails on its own roof terrace. Sea views are also guaranteed at charming boutique hotel Albion House Ramsgate – and it also overlooks the only Royal Harbour in England. Shell Grotto, Margate
Dreamland, Margate
Day One FIND ALL THE FUN OF THE RETRO-STYLE FAIR One of the most significant reinventions in Margate over the last few years is Dreamland amusement park, based on the idea of a traditional British seaside fair. When you’ve whooped and laughed your way through rides such as rollercoasters and swing boats, and immersed yourself in the interactive art installations, strap on some roller boots and hit the retro roller disco. Dreamland is a fun way to spend the afternoon whatever your age, while the evenings here are packed with live music and DJ sets for over 18s. FEAST ON THE FINEST SEAFOOD Seafood is as fresh as it gets in Margate – and café Hantverk & Found is all about serving the local produce. Find local delicacies such as rock oysters and Rye Bay scallops on its menu, as well as tagliatelle with sea urchin, all washed down with a glass of wine from its range of natural and organic wines. SIP STYLISH COCKTAILS (while the kids entertain themselves) After an afternoon of fairground fun, take the short six-minute walk from Dreamland to the Clockwork Cocktail Company, for a well-deserved Perk-Up Martini or Satan’s Whiskers in this cool cocktail bar that describes itself as ‘Steampunk/neo-Victorian style’

The beautiful bay – fringed by the Georgian facades of the town – is a popular Kent surf spot and the surf school also offers StandUp Paddle boarding. Outdoor Activities
Get ready to hear your child repeat three beautiful words all Summer “I’m so bored!” Once the second day hits and they’re moaning starts to echo through the walls, you’re going to need to pull a few tricks out of the bag to keep them busy, before you start heading for the biscuit cupboard! With this in mind and hopefully the weather on our side, we’ve put together a few fun things to do in the great outdoors. If all else fails and it pours with rain, there is nothing wrong with staying in your pyjamas all day watching movies and eating popcorn (that’s parents included fyi!)
Water Balloon Game
cherubsmagazine.com
The idea is not to burst the water balloon in this game, weird but true. Get yourselves into pairs and stand in a line facing each other. One person from each pair is given a water balloon and must gently throw it to their partner who will try to catch it without it bursting. After each successful catch, the thrower takes a step back, making the next throw just that little bit trickier. The winners are the pair who manage to keep their balloon intact over the longest distance. You will need Water balloons and water proof mascara!
For some reason painting on paper has gone out of fashion and our children seem to find more excitement decorating the walls in the house! Before it gets to that stage, introduce a stack of paper plates that you have hiding in the back of the cupboard, a selection of paints and an old tin can so your glasses don’t get ruined and off they go! Once the faces have dried (use the washing line), cut the eyes out, tie a little string on each side and let their imaginations run wild. Two activities in one equals more time to have another Pimm’s! Tip Make sure they build this at the back of the garden, the last thing you need is insects flying through the patio door!
Bubble Painting
Make a Bug Hotel Which child doesn’t like creepy crawlies? We know this idea may not appeal to you however, this will keep all ages entertained for a number of hours! Everyone loves to build things, so why not get them to make their very own insect hotel. www.rspb.org.ukhas a great step by step for ‘Build a bug hotel.’ Now, you can keep the children occupied for more than an hour and all the pots, sticks and swept up leaves you’ve kept in the corner of your garden for no reason will have a purpose! Tip Make sure they build this at the back of the garden, the last thing you need is insects flying through the patio door!
We do love an activity that involves things we already have in the house! Straws, washing up liquid, water, paint and a set of lungs to blow colourful bubbles! Simply add all the above in a cup, give it a stir, place the cup on a roll of paper and start blowing bubbles. This will be the only time in your child’s life, where you’ll allow them to blow bubbles into the liquid and let it overflow! The more that goes onto the paper the prettier it will look. Once the bubbles have burst, you will be left with a masterpiece ready to pin up on your wall of art! Note Don’t drink!
