Listening to live music is one of the better ways to spend a pleasant summer evening in Glen Allen. Here, In no particular order, are some of my favorite Glen Allen music venues and a few of the performers who frequent them: Keagan’s Irish Pub & Restaurant

You’ll find lots of music on the menu at Keagan’s, along with some good Irish pub fare. Two of my favorite entertainers are regulars there. Kari Smith will be performing on June 24 as well as July 7. If you’re not familiar with Kari, you ought to be. She’s a Mechanicsville native, who has recently returned home after several successful years playing the Nashville circuit. Kari can belt out a tune with the best of them. She can beautifully cover some of the biggest pop stars, but she really shines when she’s doing her own stuff. The lively atmosphere at Keagan’s makes for the perfect venue to enjoy your favorite beverages and an evening of her music. I’m also a big fan of the rowdy group, Cha Cha’s Cadillac. They describe their music as “Rockabilly Cowpunk.” I’m not sure what I’d call it, except for fantastic. Sean Cantreras, the lead vocalist and guitarist, along with the rest of the group, really rocks the house. Cha Cha’s Cadillac will be appearing at Keagan’s on July 15. There’s live music on most nights, with karaoke every Wednesday.

Just around the corner from Keagan’s and miles apart as far as atmosphere, is the Wine Loft. Don’t get me wrong. Both venues are fantastic. The upscale Wine Loft, as the name might imply, offers a bit more sophistication. It’s a cool little spot to enjoy over 85 wines by the glass and more than 250 by the bottle (not all in one sitting, however), along with a menu offering delicious tapas. Kari Smith is also a regular at the Wine Loft. She’ll be appearing there on June 22. “It is a slightly upscale show so I do kind of tailor my set list to that vibe,” Kari tells me. Another one of my favorite local performers, jazz vocalist, Emme St. James, will be at the Wine Loft on June 23.

Does the name, itself, conjure up images of a cool, little place out in the country. Good. That’s exactly what this place is. In addition to the country store part, you’ll also find a large selection of fresh foods including prepared meals and meals cooked to order. It’s also the perfect place to unwind, grab a beer and listen to some music. Another one of my favorite performers, Wayne Ruotolo, is a regular there. Wayne’s not just a great musician, he’s an allaround good entertainer (and good guy, too). He’ll be pickin’ and grinnin’ at Aw Shucks on June 16 as well as July 15. Please keep in mind, I only highlighted the performers that are among my favorites. Your favorites may well be appearing at these spots, too. PASTA WITH TOMATOES, KALAMATA OLIVES, AND FETA by Steve Cook

This fresh summertime pasta dish features the best of the Mediterranean – olives, feta, tomatoes, and extra-virgin olive oil. It’s a popular quick-and-easy recipe from Kukla’s Kouzina that puts a spotlight on authentic Greek flavor. Add a glass of red wine and enjoy the sunset! INGREDIENTS

2410 Granite Ridge Rd., Rockville

1¾ pounds pasta (any shape is fine)

2 teaspoons fresh thyme leaves

3 or 4 tomatoes, seeded and cut into 1/2-inch pieces or 1 pint cherry tomatoes, halved

¼ teaspoon sea salt, plus more for cooking pasta

9 ounces imported feta cheese, crumbled

1/8 teaspoon freshly-ground black pepper

½ cup pitted Kalamata olives

1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for drizzling

3 tablespoons drained capers

Fresh flat-leaf parsley, for garnish

PREPARATION 1.) Cook the pasta according to package directions until al dente. Drain.  2.) Meanwhile, in a large heatproof serving bowl, combine the tomatoes, feta, olives, capers, thyme, salt, and pepper.  3.) In a medium skillet, heat the olive oil over moderately low heat until hot but not smoking, about 1 minute. Add the cooked drained pasta to the olive oil and toss just until coated and heated through, about 1 minute. Remove from heat, add the pasta and any oil in the skillet to the tomato mixture, and toss until combined. Lightly drizzle with olive oil and garnish with parsley, if desired. Serve and enjoy!
