have to admit that I’ll look for any excuse not to spend more time trying to stay fit, whether in the gym or hiking in the great outdoors. But for residents of Goochland, the county’s Parks and Recreation department is making it pretty hard to find a good excuse. “It’s too expensive,” or “There’s no place to hike or bike,” won’t work thanks to ActiveGVA, an initiative designed to get residents up and active. Whether its rafting the James, mountain biking at Leakes Mill Park, or lifting weights at the Sports Complex, Goochland County Parks & Recreation has something for everyone. I asked Jessica Kronberg, recreation specialist with the county to share with me some of the opportunities offered through ActiveGVA. “Many folks don’t know we have weight and cardio rooms in the Sports Complex,” she tells me. I sure didn’t know that. And what’s more, they’re free to Goochland residents. The cardio room contains treadmills, ellipticals, stationary bikes, stair climbers, and cable television. The weight room contains: multiple flat, inclined and declined benches, dumbbells, barbells, pin selectorized equipment, and cable television. For those who prefer the outdoors for their exercise, there’s so much from which to choose. Kronberg mentions the new trails at Leakes Mill Park. Winding through nearly 150 acres of mature pine and hardwood forest, the Leakes Mill Park trail system offers varying levels of difficulty for mountain biking, hiking, and trail running enthusiasts. “The mountain bike trails were created by volunteers,” Kronberg adds. For younger ones, Goochland’s summer camps are much more than the camp I spent my summers at. Through their affiliation with Challenge Island is an international educational franchise, kids go on unique “island” adventures where they work in collaborative tribes to take on various challenges. Depending on space availability, your child just might be able to attend Beach Party Camp, where he/she and his/her friends will build and design their own Tribal Tiki Huts, beach racers, cruise ships, and boardwalk rides and games. Or how about Space Wars Camp, where they will take on a galaxy-full of movie inspired challenges including building their own space stations, fighting off pesky aliens and mastering Jedi training. In addition to the “Island” adventures, kids get to pursue their special interests at a cartoon drawing camp, or an Undersea Art Adventure Camp, or horseback riding camp. PASTA WITH TOMATOES, KALAMATA OLIVES, AND FETA by Steve Cook

This fresh summertime pasta dish features the best of the Mediterranean – olives, feta, tomatoes, and extra-virgin olive oil. It’s a popular quick-and-easy recipe from Kukla’s Kouzina that puts a spotlight on authentic Greek flavor. Add a glass of red wine and enjoy the sunset! INGREDIENTS 1¾ pounds pasta (any shape is fine)

2 teaspoons fresh thyme leaves

3 or 4 tomatoes, seeded and cut into 1/2-inch pieces or 1 pint cherry tomatoes, halved

¼ teaspoon sea salt, plus more for cooking pasta

9 ounces imported feta cheese, crumbled

1/8 teaspoon freshly-ground black pepper

½ cup pitted Kalamata olives

1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for drizzling

3 tablespoons drained capers

Fresh flat-leaf parsley, for garnish

1.) Cook the pasta according to package directions until al dente. Drain.

2.) Meanwhile, in a large heatproof serving bowl, combine the tomatoes, feta, olives, capers, thyme, salt, and pepper.  3.) In a medium skillet, heat the olive oil over moderately low heat until hot but not smoking, about 1 minute. Add the cooked drained pasta to the olive oil and toss just until coated and heated through, about 1 minute. Remove from heat, add the pasta and any oil in the skillet to the tomato mixture, and toss until combined. Lightly drizzle with olive oil and garnish with parsley, if desired. Serve and enjoy!
