Help Us All EDITOR’s NOTE: The Court of Criminal Appeals in Texas, on Nov. 15, halted the execution of Mr. Reed, granting an indefinite stay and calling for the consideration of new evidence by the court where he was originally tried. While this temporary reprieve is being celebrated, we believe we must still share information and keep this case in the public eye and on everyone’s mind. Lest we forget!

While indefinite stay was granted, we must stay focused and vocal EDITOR’s NOTE: Sen. Royce West wrote this piece prior to the Appeals Court decision. This message is important because there are so many more Rodney Reeds and while an indefinite stay was granted, he has not been exonerated. By Sen. Royce West
Next week, November 20, 2019, Rodney Reed could become the next person to be put to death by the State of Texas. But there are enough circumstances and facts - old and new - surrounding the case

that I, along with a number that's growing daily, believe strongly that Nov. 20 should
come and go while Rodney Reed remains alive. In a case that has now attracted national and international attention, Reed was convicted of abducting, sexually assaulting and killing 19 year-old Stacey Stites, whose body was found road-side in Bastrop County, on April 23, 1996. Reed was sentenced to death two years later. Aspects See WEST, page 2

didn’t commit. She changed my entire outlook as I realized that everyone in prison is not guilty. Then when former Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins started putting faces to more of the wrongfully incarcerated, I realized we definitely had an issue. You have to ask yourself, “If people are getting out of jail after being wrongfully imprisoned, doesn’t it stand to reason that someone who was executed was probably innocent, too? In one of the scariest movies of all time, to me, I saw someone suffer and I’ve always thought of how I would feel in the same predicament. The movie was from Edgar Allan Poe’s novel, “The Pit and the Pendulum,” and featured Vincent Price. In the end, a door closes and a woman is left behind to die because no one knows she is there and she is gagged and trapped in a Chamber, unable to move or make a sound. I believe the feeling that woman had as the door closed, “never to be opened again” would be the same feeling an innocent person would have as they were about to be put to death, paying for a crime they didn’t commit. Which brings me to my truth. There were times that I felt wrongfully accused and punished. For the life of me, I couldn’t see why my mother didn’t see that my brother was the guilty party. But sometimes, we both got a whipping. No matter how much I professed my innocence, I ended up paying, either with a whipping or a chore, and my brother wouldn’t blink an eye. I wonder if Mother wanted me to snitch. Hmmm… Rodney Reed is scheduled to be put to death on November 20, 2019. He has always maintained his innocence in the rape and murder of 19-year-old Stacey Stites on April 23, 1996, in a small Texas town. According to his attorneys, evidence exonerates Mr. Reed. Actually the evidence See MY TRUTH, page 4

West speaks on Reed case, continued from front page
of his case have been appealed up, down and through state and federal courts, even reaching the U.S. Supreme Court in 2014. Questions have been asked regarding whether Reed received a fair trial; if evidence that appears obvious went without proper examination, could another person be responsible for Stites' murder and whether or not race played a role, either during the investigation or at the trial stage. So many questions have gone without satisfactory answers that it is now clear that the fate of Rodney Reed will not fade quietly into the night. They ring so loudly that last week, both chambers of the Texas Legislature, in bipartisan fashion, have appealed to Texas Governor Greg Abbott to at least delay Reed's execution date. My signature is one of 16 Texas state senators who signed-on, petitioning the governor on Reed's behalf. Even one of Texas' two U.S. Senators thinks further judicial scrutiny is warranted. Two weeks ago, I sent a letter to the governor requesting a stay of execution. I did so because I'm convinced that salient questions surrounding Stites' death and Reed's death sentence have not been answered.
Undisputed evidence says that the victim's belt was used to strangle her, causing death. Parts of it were found near where her body was recovered. Other parts were found where the truck of her ex-fiancé, ex-Georgetown policeman, Jimmy Fennell Jr. was abandoned. But 23 years later, the belt has never been examined for DNA evidence. Right now, that fact is central to one of two appeals filed by lawyers representing Reed that await rulings from federal courts. Only DNA evidence collected from the victim ties Reed, now 51, to the case. Expert testimony during Reed's trial stated that the evidence helped establish when Stites, who was white, died, placing Reed where the body was discovered. Since that time, the medical examiner said his testimony was in error after new forensic testing revealed that the body fluids found could have backed Reed's defense that he had consensual sex with the victim at least a day before the day she was murdered. Other evidence presented by Reed's attorneys that resulted in a stay of execution granted in 2015, indicated that Stites' body had been moved from where she was killed. Since Reed's 1998 trial, a number of

persons familiar with Fennell, who later served 10 years for kidnapping and sexually assaulting a woman he picked up while on duty, have come forward with accounts of statements Fennell made implicating him in Stites' death. Some come from members of law enforcement. Still, Bastrop County Criminal District Attorney Bryan Goertz has remained adamant in defending Reed's conviction, while citing other sexual assault charges that have been filed against him and blocking requests to test the likely murder weapon. Although the clock steadily ticks toward Nov. 20, hope persists. Last week, I requested to meet with Gov. Abbott to discuss a case whose circumstances and questions will be part of the historical record of how justice is administered in Texas. I await his reply.

Rep. Sherman weighs in on Reed case
Rep. Carl Sherman Austin, TX – District 109 State Representative Carl Sherman said he was “grateful to God” the parole board unanimously voted to recommend the Governor delay the execution of Rodney Reed. Rep. Sherman was one of seven State Representatives who signed a letter several weeks ago asking Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles Chair, David Gutierrez to grant Rodney Reed a temporary reprieve. “Expressing thanks to the many who have
sought review of this case to ensure Rodney Reed's case receives proper review,” Rep. Sherman said. Mr. Reed was found guilty of a 1996 murder that the letter to Gov. Abbott and Mr. Gutierrez said, “has been questioned for decades.” He was scheduled for execution in Texas on November 20, 2019 for the Bastrop County murder of Stacey Stites.
Rep. Sherman, along with Representatives Ron Reynolds, Alma Allen, Sheryl Cole, Senfronia Thompson, Toni Rose and Shawn Thierry wrote in the letter regarding Reed’s reprieve to allow “new witness statements and DNA evidence to be investigated and tested.” The letter pointed out “There needs to be not one question if a person could be innocent before they are executed.”

NABJ names convention locations WASHINGTON – The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) recently announced the Board of Directors’ selections for the host cities of the association's National Convention & Career Fair for 2023 through 2026. 2023 - Birmingham 2024 - Chicago 2025 - Cleveland 2026 - Atlanta Previously announced convention cities include Washington, D.C. in 2020, Houston in 2021 and Las Vegas in 2022. The newest city and hotel selections were based on a combination of metrics including the following: Potential revenue generation Projected expenses for the organization Desirable hotel availability dates Rooming prices and hotel capacity Travel and attendance costs for members and partners Accommodations for meeting space and exhibitor requirements
Dorothy Tucker NABJ President
Attendance track record (if applicable) Historical significance and the opportunity to support robust minority businesses were also factors discussed during the selection process. “This year, NABJ celebrated a record-breaking convention in the Miami metropolitan area and we are committed to duplicating and adding to that successful formula,” said President Dorothy Tucker. “After thoughtful research, review and dialogue, our Board decided that these cities offer the environment, resources and partnerships that are needed to not only take our conventions
to the next level but support the expectations of our attendees.” Cities and hotels that competed to host NABJ conventions were not chosen for a combination of several reasons, including: Required convention dates were not available Meeting space, guest rooms and general operating costs were too expensive Attendance trackrecords from previous NABJ conventions were unfavorable The site selection review process concluded in early October after site visits to the seven finalist cities, chosen by the Board, were completed. NABJ received multiple proposals from cities across the country. The review process included a multi-city tour conducted by a special NABJ delegation. The tour stops included hotel and venue visits, engagement with local NABJ and community members and meetings with local convention and visitor bureaus.

We are very focused on curing or slowing down Alzheimer’s Disease. I look forward to working with you in the future.” In January, after a stint of 26 years, Giddings left the Texas House of Representatives. She tenaciously served District 109 – Cedar Hill, DeSoto, Lancaster, Wilmer, Hutchins and part of Glenn Heights and Oak Cliff. Giddings remains strongly committed to serve North Texas. Her goal centers around
focusing on the empowerment of women as well as continuing the valuable work she started on various community projects to improve health care in the African American community, such as bringing more awareness to Alzheimer’s Disease. “I want to continue doing anything I can,” she said. “I know that a higher percentage of African Americans are being affected by Alzheimer’s than other populations. We don’t know what causes this disease and there is no cure. We have some medications to intervene, but there’s no indication that they really help.” According to Avery McEntire, Manager for the Dallas and North Texas Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, “in the United States, there are approximately 638,000 people living with Alzheimer’s Disease.”
Dikita Enterprises celebrates 40-year milestone The oldest African American family-owned and -operated civil engineering and consulting firm in North Texas will celebrate its 40th birthday in mid-November 2019. Dikita Enterprises, led by Eve Williams, president and chief executive officer and daughter of founder and chairman Lucious L. Williams, sees a bright future after four decades in business. “We have discovered our niche and it is driven by paying close attention to our clients and their needs,” said Eve, who took over the leadership of the company from her father in 2010 after serving as its Chief Financial Officer for 27 years having received a MBA in accounting from UTA. “We know we must exceed the expectations and provide services our clients may have overlooked,” she added. The company provides a variety of services in the aviation, education, hospitals, highways, transit and transit market research industries including plan-ning, data analysis and reporting, transit market research, and program management. The first major client for the firm was the Frank Crowley Court Building on River Front Blvd. for Dallas County in 1986. The firm provided civil, electrical, and structural engineering design. Dikita, which has two offices in Dallas and Fort Worth, has recorded several firsts in the engineering field. It was the first African American company to become a program manager for Dallas ISD and its Bond Program of 2015, whereby the firm is one of three responsible for managing the $1.6 billion worth of capital improvement, including construction of nine new and replacement schools; expansion of facilities and 326 classrooms; land acquisition and educational program. “They have been excellent,” said Lew Blackburn, former

Board President and Trustee for Dallas ISD. “The projects have been on time and budget.” The company also served as the Program Manager in 2015 to the Lancaster ISD as well, overseeing architecture design and construction of 2 new elementary schools (Pleasant Run and West Main); one 9th grade remodel, the Barack & Michelle Obama 9th grade campus; and one middle school to be opened August, 2020 school year (Elsie Robertson). Those services included budget review, quality assurance, cost estimates, constructability review, and overall contractor management. “We strive to create value,” said founder and chairman Williams, who led the firm for over 30 years and is still active as its Governmental Affairs Officer. “My daughter makes sure we consistently let our employees know if we made a promise to our clients, keep your promise and exceed expectations.” A key executive in the bond program manage-ment area for the company is Walter Dansby. Dansby, a Fort Worth native, is senior vice-president and program executive for the firm. He has more than 40 years of experience in the Public School system, where he has served as a Coach, Assistant Principal, Principal, Executive Director of Instruction, Associate Superintendent and Superintendent. As Deputy Super-
intendent, he was responsible for a $593.6 million capital improvement program, which was completed on time and under budget, successfully building five new schools, nine additional and extensive refurbishment of athletic facilities and over 130 campuses. “No question our growth in this area has been Walter’s tremendous experience,” said Eve. “His background and leadership are invaluable.” A hallmark of the company is its status with clients, particularly Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART). The firm enjoys a 32year relationship with the public transit entity. “We would not be where we are without our services to DART,” said Eve. “Working with Dikita has been excellent. Dikita has been competent, capable, timely, respon-sive and completely professional in responding to our needs. I know who they are. They make sure things get done,” said Gary Thomas, president and executive director of DART. Dikita is a certified Disadvantage Business Enterprise (DBE), Minority Business Enterprise (MBE), Historically Underutilized Business (HUB), Small Business Enterprise (SBE) in over 19 states including Texas, California, Georgia, Louisiana, Michigan, Florida, Arizona, New York and Washington, D.C.
The BBBS Point of Light for the evening was special guest, Stephanie Lembo. “On November 8, 2010 at 3:35 am my best friend, my soulmate, the father to my beautiful boys committed suicide in front of his parents,” said Ms. Lembo. “On November 1, 2017 we walked into the Big Brothers Big Sisters office and there was a six foot plus man with a huge smile on his face, that
day we met Lucas’ Big Brother Ryan. „Thank you Ryan, you brought hope back into our family, and you just being a part of Lucas’ life, has enriched his future. Thank you Ryan and Big Brothers Big Sisters for being there and not letting me do this alone anymore.” For more information on how to get involved, visit www.bbbstx.org.

HOMELESSNESS CRISIS–We are better than this THE LAST WORD By DR. JULIANNE MALVEAUX I was returning from an errand when the skies opened up. The punishing rain came down with such vigor that despite an umbrella, the bottom inches of my pants were soaked. With my wash and wear hair, and just half a block more to walk, I shrugged the rain off, until I saw a woman sheltering herself from the rain in a narrow but covered side entrance to a church. The opening could not have been more than 4 feet wide, and sister was easily five feet tall. She had wedged herself, somehow, into the space and was lying horizontally with a newspaper over her head. From across the street, I could see her beautiful dark chocolate skin, but also her disheveled clothing, and no layers to shelter her from the rain. Watching her reminded me that we are going into the season of high risk for those who have no shelter. Many can make it during the warmer months sleeping comfortably outside, but as temperatures drop and precipitation increases, thousands are vulnerable because they have no shelter. When we elect a clown, expect a circus. Too many urgent national concerns are being swallowed by this man who lacks the gravitas to behave as President. The man who
Wesley,
calls his colleagues “scum, who attacks Black people, especially Black women, with impunity, who dodges the Constitution every chance he gets, who might spark a major crisis by stomping over oversight, and who might cause a government shutdown later this year if he doesn’t get his way. And then there are the human needs that are being ignored. According to the Department of Housing and Urban Development, during a “point in time survey on a night in January 2018, more than half a million homeless people were counted. (https://files.hudexchange. info/resources/documents/2018AHAR-Part-1.pdf). While there are flaws in this methodology, it is as close as we can get to a scientific measurement of the homeless. There are half a million people, mostly men, mostly white, but way too many African Americans. African Americans are 13 percent of the population and 40 percent of the homeless. The homeless are primarily concentrated in California, New York, Florida, and Texas, but you can find them in almost any community. Two-thirds of the homeless are sheltered on a given night, but a third are sleeping on the streets, on park benches, in alleys, under awnings.
To quote the late great Congressman Elijah Cummings, “we are better than this. Nearly 40,000 of these homeless are veterans. Nearly 40,000 are youth. Their homelessness flies in the face of our values as a country. Those who have served our country should not have to sleep on the streets. Those who have not have had a chance at life should not find their chances on a park bench. This is not just about homelessness. It is about an economic crisis that has made affordable housing difficult to obtain, with jobs and economic security even more difficult to obtain. While 45 crows about our healthy economy, the Fed has lowered interest rates because it is concerned about the health of the economy. And low unemployment rates belie the absolute angst that millions of our fellow citizens are experiencing. The homeless data are daunting enough, but there is also hidden homelessness. Too many – 4.4 million – are living in other people’s houses because they have no homes of their own. While there is nothing wrong with “doubling up families when it is voluntary, involuntary doubling up is a prescription for disaster. Compound this with the number of young people who are “couch surfing because they have no place to go. I’ve met young people who are living in storage units because they have no homes, managing their sanitation needs in gyms and hotel bathrooms. Some of these folks have full-time jobs that pay so little that
they can’t afford housing. We are better than this. The specter of homelessness is incompatible with the rhetoric of economic progress and economic expansion. From San Francisco, where people with tents live underneath freeways, to Washington, DC, where homeless people sleep on streets that appear to be prosperous, to New York City, where some of the homeless have mental health issues, and nowhere to go. Our compassion compass is off because we are so focused on shenanigans that we have ignored people. Still, about 552,000 people were shelter-challenged when HUD executed their “point in time survey. It’s a flawed methodology, but one that challenges the nature of predatory capitalism in our society and in our economy. No one should have to sleep in the street, wedge herself into an awning, or stand in line for temporary shelter. We are so much better than this. Julianne Malveaux is an author and economist. In 1987, worship services began at the new home at 7408 South Hampton Road in Dallas. During the next few years, under Pastor Wesley’s dynamic leadership and obedience to God’s vision, some 25 new ministries were established to reach the community. As a result of those efforts, more than 1,000 people in the Dallas/ Ft. Worth area benefited. While continuing to grow the membership and expand the ministries, Pastor Wesley earned a Master of Divinity from Brite Divinity School on the campus of Texas Christian University in Ft. Worth. In 1997, Pastor Wesley had the distinction of being the first African American doctoral candidate at Phoenix Seminary in Arizona where he received the Doctorate of Ministry. Meanwhile, the membership was still rapidly growing, so much so that he instituted three Sunday morning Worship Services.

MY TRUTH Continued from page 1 points to another person, the victim’s fiancĂŠ, and local police officer Jimmy Fennell. I encourage you to read up on this case. There are so many troubling components. So many, that there’s no way Mr. Reed should be facing death. In fact, he shouldn’t have spent the majority of his adult life behind bars. But there he sits, with numerous advocates, including elected officials, celebrities, law enforcement officers, and people operating with all their mental faculties. This story is not a new one, and sadly Mr. Reed is not the first one to face death. Even thinking about it is enough to make anyone with a conscience sick. My students at Paul Quinn College would love to have deep conversations about ethics. I would tell them they had to decide what type of person they were going to be; that while they could fall back on situational ethics, they needed to really have a strong foundation based on their beliefs. Some still wanted to have exceptions, like if a situation involved a family member. Mr. Reed was convicted of killing Ms. Stites. If you don’t support the death penalty, will you feel the same way if you are related to Ms. Stites? If you support the death penalty, will you feel the same way if Mr. Reed is your relative? Some things to think about, just like all the evidence that has been shared about this case. Now, I know folks are tired of the graduates from the FaceBook School of Law, however; there are experts and a preponderance of evidence, conflicting stories, and puzzling factors that make putting Mr. Reed to death one of the most horrific miscarriages of justice that folks will be talking about for centuries to come. That is, unless Texas Governor Greg Abbott, or the Supreme Court intervenes. But guess what? This case will still be talked about because Mr. Fennell makes you pause and think, and with so many twists and tur, folks will be discussing the travesty of Mr. Reed being locked up on death row for almost two decades. And still, despite all the evidence, there are going to be those who will say the right man is in jail, even if Mr. Fennell (who is determined to always invoke his 5th amendment right) testifies or is given more scrutiny. We have seen prosecutors whose egos will not let them admit they got it wrong. We’re taking about a life. One life is already gone and another has been ruined. “If â€? is a big word and there are so many “ifs.â€? There are too many “ifsâ€? to move forward with this execution. We have an imperfect system. Time and time again we have seen an unjust system at work. Please let’s not have another innocent person die because of this system, especially when we have more and more people working to right the wrongs. I survived my whippings and lessons. Hopefully Mr. Reed will survive this atrocity.
POWER XIV: SONS V - “He’s So Talented! WHAT’S ON MILES’ MIND BY MILES JAYE Talent is power! Talent has the power to fascinate and captivate. Talented people possess the power to influence and to persuade, that’s why singers and actors are used to sell products on TV—folks trust people with talent. Talent, combined with charisma, swag, and even a fair degree of good looks, can yield a powerful, inexplicable, almost inescapable force over those
exposed to its allure. I get a little uncomfortable when someone tells me, “you’re so talented. Not to complicate a compliment, but a child can be talented. That same compliment can be true of a precocious 6 year old or a gifted 12 year old. I come from a world where talent was a starting point not a destination. Time is the factor! It’s
a question of sustained hard work and sacrifice over time. Talent is the seed, it’s not the salad. It’s the grape, it’s not the wine. Wine takes time! When I board a plane, I don’t want to hear, “no need to worry folks, both pilots are talented. I want to know that there is a Captain and a First Officer on board. I want to know the Captain is in charge, because he or she is the most skilled and has the most training and cockpit-time operating that aircraft. I imagine the same is true of doctors. “Dr. Williams is not a board-certified surgeon,
but she really is quite a talented physician—you’ll be just fine. My last visit to the dentist, a dental hygienist was assigned to perform the check-up on my gums. I was not happy to see her approaching my mouth with that sharp hook-like object instructing me to open wide. Where was the dentist? In the arts, we work toward mastering our craft. I like to think of myself as having mastered my craft-- the art of songwriting for example, or my style of jazz violin. I’ve put many years of work into both. I was striving for mastery. In music, a master is called a virtuoso or Maestro. In the martial arts, a sensei or sifu, after mastering some form or
system of karate or kung-fu, after many years of study and training, is then qualified to instruct-- he or she, is called a Master. “You’re so talented somehow, unintentionally, negates the work and sacrifice required for accomplishment. Perhaps also unintentionally, we teach our kids that talent is the X-factor. They’re so caught up with the talent thing that they’re convinced that absent an obvious gift for athletics or music, they are unlikely to enjoy the opportunities life has to offer. The fact is, opportunity is born of every hour of hard work you apply. Sadly, and ironically, the talent setup hurts
the talented ones the most, as they’re led to believe that talent alone is enough. Will Smith said: “I’ve always thought of myself to be just average talent and what I have is a ridiculous, insane obsessiveness for practice and preparation. Talent is a setup! Think about what we teach our sons about talent. If you have it, you’re special, if you don’t, you’re not. Then what about drive, determination, practice, preparation? What about character, perseverance, tenacity, persistence? What about courage? What about faith? See MILES, page 5

Rep. Conyers was Regal and Resolute!!
PERSPECTIVES FROM THE CAPITOL BY CONGRESSWOMAN EDDIE BERNICE JOHNSON (D-TX)
When the final history of the United States Congress is written, the name John Conyers, Jr. will stand regal and resolute, and the ‘Dean of the House of Representatives’ will be recognized as an influential giant of the American Democracy. Only five members of Congress served longer tenures in the House than the recently departed member from Detroit, Michigan who served as chairman of the powerful
5
House Judiciary Committee and the instrumental Committee on Oversight and Reform during his more than fifty-two years in the House of Representatives. As one of the founding members of the Congressional Black Caucus, Chairman Conyers helped to birth an exemplary organization that became the “Conscience of the Congress,” one with a highlyrespected national and global voice and vision.
When others were afraid or unable to speak, Chairman Conyers rose from his seat and spoke passionately against the evils of apartheid in South Africa, police brutality in American cities, and the declaration of war against Iraq. He was a gracious patriot who believed in rewarding those who served our country. He fought to expand monetary benefits for families of police officers and firefighters who were killed while serving our communities and its residents. It was chairman Conyers who waged a fifteen battle, often with few allies, to have the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. designated a national
holiday. Chairman Conyers saw the prescience and meaning in Dr. King’s life when some in Washington and throughout the nation branded Dr. King a traitor and a communist. Undaunted, he persisted until the only national holiday in the United States named for an ethnic minority was created. Many do not know it, but Mrs. Rosa Parks, the civil rights icon struggled to find suitable employment after her refusal to surrender her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama bus during a city-wide boycott. It was Chairman Conyers who offered her a job in his Detroit congressional office in 1965. Mrs. Parks was a trusted
aide to Congressman Conyers until her retirement in 1988. It was indeed a delightful and educational experience working with Congressman Conyers in the House of Representatives. He was a sincere and disciplined gentleman whose compassion was extended far beyond those he knew, and those he represented. Everyone was aware that when Congressman Conyers entered a room, his very presence was regal and resolute. His matchless brilliance and his lawyerly manner preceded him as legions will rightfully testify, and as our nation’s history shall rightly record.
FORMER REP. JOHN CONYERS, JR. Congresswoman Johnson represents the 30th congressional district of Texas in the United States House of Representatives. She also chairs the Committee on Science, Space and Technology in the House of Representatives.

Courtney and Cierra began their latest podcast with a “quote of the week.” These quotes help inspire our-selves and others to finish out the week strong and resilient. “Some things just need time to work out. You don’t need to overthink how and when. Just trust and believe that it will” was the quote from Courtney, as she discussed how she’s working to stop overthinking situations that’s out of her control. “Stop being afraid of what might go wrong and think of what could go right,” said Cierra as she talked about changing her thought pattern, setting the tone with positive thoughts, ultimately bringing positive outcomes. On the seventh episode of the Flo of Ci and Co, we discussed a variety of topics from: Finding ‘The One’ in a party scene, holiday

approaching, the infamous Popeye’s Chicken Sandwich, and most importantly the Rodney Reed case. Mr. Reed is scheduled to be executed in less than three weeks for the murder of a Texas woman. The evidence of this case questions if he is truly guilty or not. Cierra: “The case happened back in 1996. Stacey Stites was 19 years old at the time of her death and she was actually engaged to be married to the person who they believe actually committed the crime, and his name is Jimmy Fennel.” Courtney: “That’s so heavy on my heart, because this man
is about to get killed in a couple weeks, for something that has no evidence pointing at him. The only evidence the police has is Rodney’s DNA in Stacey, but they were romantically evolved.” Cierra: “I believe because of the history of Jimmy Fennell, that he definitely should’ve been one of the suspects looked at besides Rodney Reed.” Courtney: “Do you think they didn’t look at her fiancé as the murderer because he was a cop? That’s so scary that were supposed to call the cops when they were in danger but now in days, they’re the ones committing the crimes so who do we call when we need help because we obviously can’t call them.” It’s always a pleasure hearing these ladies opinions on variety of topics and advice they always have to share for their listeners.

QUIT PLAYIN’: Trump – An American Crisis! more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives every thing its value.” Paine posited this speech to persuade his readers to support the experiment by enlisting American soldiers for the revolution. He pelted his solemn argument with a tone of authority, concise diction, and elegant similes. “Hell” as he portrays it is a useful hyperbole for the last four years of Donald Trump. Trump’s resurrection of a precivil rights brand of tribalism and White supremacy has fanned the flames of hubris and hatred. The state of “Our”
Constitution could get even more hellacious. Parenthetically, if it’s strange that any Black man in America can say “Our Constitution,” you have company. The two words were never formed sequentially in my mouth until Representative Barbara Jordan’s famous 1974 speech to impeach Richard Milhous Nixon qualified it. “Earlier today, we heard the beginning of the Preamble to the Constitution of the United States: ‘We, the people.’ It’s a very eloquent beginning. But when that document was completed on the seventeenth of September in 1787, I was not included in that “We, the people.” I felt somehow
I Was Just Thinking,
for many years that George Washington and Alexander Hamilton just left me out by mistake. But through the process of amendment, interpretation, and court decision, I have finally been included in “We, the people.” Most will agree that African Americans have been legislated into “We the People.” Meanwhile, we understand that legislation without brotherly love or public policy can still get you killed by the Police. Anyway… The “summer soldiers and sunshine patriots” that make up the Republican Party, and especially those seated in the U.S. House and Senate, should heed Paine’s call. All of the
excuses they offer so far have been useless utterances. They argue to let “the people” decide 13 months from now. Meanwhile, poor criminals are jailed until they can prove their innocence. The question that begs for an answer is whether the Presidency of these United States bears an inherent and exclusive right to subvert the laws of our sovereignty without protest, penalty, or punishment. The framers of the Constitution commissioned the power to indict and punish a President to the House and Senate. The President has no similar oversight. They never intended to create a monarchy or establish a kingship.
If you have not read her life story, I beg you to do so. The woman born into slavery, escaped, became an abolitionist, and helped the Union Army as a scout and spy. Called the Moses of her people, she returned to the South numerous times and led countless enslaved African descendants from slavery to freedom in the north via the seemingly divinely-protected Undergrown Railroad. I say countless enslaved Harriet Tubman descendants because conflicting Photo Credit: Library of Congress researchers put the number as to take everything we read with a grain of low as 70 to as high as 1,000. Researchers also disagree over whether salt. In recent years we are being told that Harriet actually said the following quote, the Statue of Liberty originally was a gift as good a quote as it is: “I freed a thousand from France to America celebrating, not slaves. I could have freed a thousand more immigrants, but Abraham Lincoln and the if only they knew they were slaves.” Today, end of slavery. Look at the nicely concealed broken “woke” listeners would correct whoever said these words, changing “slaves” to shackles on Lady Liberty’s feet and read two books – one by professor Ed Berenson, “enslaved.” There’s a difference. Still, I was just thinking...., History has the other by engineer Yasmin Sabina run such a number on our people. We have Khan – explaining the shackles, Lincoln
Even if you lack a law degree from now-defunct Trump University, the Constitution is clear. If you accept the premise that “All men are created equal,” Trump has to be treated like everybody else. Al Capone, Bill Cosby, and Jeffrey Epstein were Americans too! If Donald Trump can continue to disobey laws, obstruct the investigations of those breaches of the law and engross his personal enterprises without penalty; then let all the captives go free! If ignorance of the law is no excuse for the poor, then millionaires ought to tow the same line. Thomas Paine would confront the crisis we see today.

Try either one of two books about Tubman by Sarah H. Bradford written in the 1800s and a third that Tubman scholar Kate Clifford Larson published in 2003. I’ll leave you to research them. And the recent film Harriet, although acclaimed, is getting its own share of heat from various haters. Some who wanted an African American rather than Cynthia Erivo, a Black Brit of Nigerian descent, to play the lead role. Others were unhappy about deals they wanted to make with the filmmakers, or unhappy about some behind-the-scenes political stances. Someone is always unhappy. But I was just thinking... I must say Goodbye. I need to go see a movie.

Furthermore, if Trump were a Negro from the ghetto, a Mexican from the barrios, or a poor White boy from a trailer park; he would already be playing checkers with Paul Manafort and Michael Cohen. Thomas Paine ended The Crisis as emphatically as he began it. “This is our situation, and who will may know it. By perseverance and fortitude, we have the prospect of a glorious issue; by cowardice and submission, the sad choice of a variety of evils.” We have a crisis!

Dale Carnegie, author of “How to Win Friends and Influence People” said: “We all have possibilities we don’t know about. We can do things we don’t even dream we can do.” Napoleon Hill, author of “Think and Grow Rich” said: “Patience, persistence and perspiration make an unbeatable combination for success.” He also said: “What the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve.” The Apostle Paul, author of 1 Corinthians 12:7-11 said: “But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy,
to another discerning of spirits, to another speaking in tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.” How many of us even teach our sons what the Word has to say about talent? Every son has the ability, the potential, the talent, to be a great son, a great father, husband, co-worker, neighbor-- a great man. Every son has the gifts needed to make his mom and dad proud, but he is just the seed, and like any seed, he requires cool water, warm sun, and the love of fertile soil to blossom and grow to his full potential. That’s what’s on my mind! Miles Jaye is an award-winning R&B/Jazz singer, musician and producer. He is also an author, painter and trained chef.

Hollywood’s Movie Review:
Harriet
BY HOLLYWOOD
HERNANDEZ
Any kid who took high school history is aware of the iconic character in Black History known as Harriet Tubman, but the movie Harriet takes us into the life of the abolitionist and teaches us about the woman, Harriet Tubman. She had almost superhero-type powers. First, she freed herself with a 100-mile journey to Philadelphia, then she made the trip 10 more times over a 13-year period, freeing family members, friends and other enslaved American Blacks who wanted to be free as well.
In total, she personally led over 70 slaves to freedom. She had a strong faith and an even stronger desire to be free. With her Christian background, she believed that no man should be able to own another human being. It was that strong faith that gave her her relentless spirit to free fellow slaves and leads them to freedom. The movie shows
her tragedies and her ability to triumph over the impossible obstacles that she faced. There’s a scene in the movie where she jumps into a river from off a bridge where she tells her master that she would rather be dead than to not be free. She had an amazing spirit. She had a lifetime of historic firsts, such as being the first army commander to lead a
group of American soldiers in battle. Tubman also started out as a person who used safe houses to help slaves travel to freedom in the north to become the conductor of the Underground Railroad. Harriet isn’t a “Black story.” It’s a story about a woman who was a true hero. It’s an inspiring and uplifting story about a woman who never gave up, no matter what the odds. This is a story for all Americans. In her later years, Tubman worked with Susan B. Anthony on issues involving women. She also established a nursing home where former slaves could get free medical care. She was an amazing woman who lived to be 91 years old. The movie is rated PG13 for violence and has a run time of 2 hours and 5 minutes. On my “Hollywood Popcorn Scale” I rate Harriet a JUMBO

MTV Teen Mom Young + Pregnant’s Ashley Jones

I adore my job! Talking to millennials (born 1981-1996), Gen X (born 1965-1980) and my favorite Baby Boomers (born 1944-1964) and the Silent Generation (born 19281942). Everyone’s favorite MTV “Teen Mom: Young + Pregnant” girls - Ashley, Brianna and Kayla - are back for season 2 as they navigate the new challenges of motherhood. This season, they are joined by two new momsto-be Kiaya and Rachel who are just starting out on their journey. Invited into the Valder Beebe Show studios Ashley Jones, (22). Ashley’s tumultuous relationship with Bar, her daughter Holly’s father, has had a lot of highs and lows,

Whose wedding is it?
I was married to my wife for 11 years. During that time we had three children, one daughter and two sons. In my opinion, our relationship deteriorated so my wife and I divorced because I had an affair. I have since married that woman and we have two children together, two sons. We are very happy and she’s always had a close relationship with my older children. But understandably, not my wife. My oldest, a daughter is getting married this year. As her father, I am paying for her wedding and very excited to walk her down the aisle. That is until recently when I received an email from her saying she asked her mom to walk her down the aisle. I am very disappointed and am considering not attending. I would like your advice on the matter. Anonymous
ASK ALMA
By Alma Gill Dear Anonymous Hmmm, well, first and foremost, it’s her wedding and she has the final word on who should walk her down this aisle. With that being said, my wonder is, did her mother ask her or make her feel guilty into going in that direction? On one hand, you mentioned the affair, upon which I’m sure no one has forgotten, especially since you’re happily married to the other woman. On the other hand, walking her down the aisle – should not be used as a repercussion tool or a “remember you hurt my mama” moment. My advice is to have a conversation with your daughter. It would be ideal if your first wife (not the second) could be present, but if not, so be it. Tell your daughter
you want more than anything to walk her down the aisle. Remind her that being your only daughter is what makes it even more special to you. On that note, look to her mother for support. I wouldn’t take this issue directly to her mom, because it’s not her wedding. Both parents should be willing to walk in the words of the wise and recognize, this isn’t about the past, it’s about the future. Your daughter’s future and what will make her happy. It looks like you and your new family have moved on, but that’s not the case for all involved. The breakup of a marriage is difficult and divorce with children is traumatic. Evidently, parts of hearts in your first home, haven’t completely healed. Take this left hook on the
chin and deal with it. Don’t give up so easily. Once you’ve shared your feelings, all of your feelings, allow your daughter to make her choice. Yes you should attend the wedding, regardless if you’re in the wedding party. Whatever she decides is what you should abide by. You all will have to live with the decision, just as you did when you divorced. If things don’t go your way, between you and me, pick up your feelings and put them back in your pocket. Prepare to wear your most stylish tux and the biggest smile you can muster. Just as you were mature enough to make a lifelong, difficult decision, based on what was best for you at the time… she will, too.

Cedar Hill reigns at Florida A&M BY ARIANNA REAMEY SPECIAL FROM THE FAMUAN
Living up to peers’ expectations may be more complicated than it may seem for current Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) King of Orange and Green Sidney Fleeks. “Same titles, similar crowns, but different reigns,” Fleeks said. The 2019-2020 King of Orange and Green is serving up school spirit but in a new and fun fashion. Aside from his position on the FAMU Royal Court, Fleeks is a senior public relations major who is also the CEO of his own multi-media agency, Street Culture Media. “I use my public relations skills and efforts to help share our beloved FAMU experience with others. Through my reign I want to make Rattler spirit a national phenomenon,” he said. During his campaign, one of Fleeks’ main platform points was called “Advance Broadcast.” Through this initiative he plans to create a web series that highlights not only the HBCU experience, but the FAMU experience. In turn Rattlers will be given the chance to showcase their talents, as well as tackle real issues. “I want to utilize my platform to bridge the gap between student leaders and students. I want to be transparent with students to show them that I am a real person too. In addition, I never want the student body to ever feel like they can’t come to me and talk to me,” said Fleeks. “The only difference between the Sid from freshman year and now is a haircut and a title.” Differences between Fleeks’ and his predecessor leave some on campus with a little bit of getting used to. Students still have to get used to different forms of spirit.

Former Miss Junior Attendant, Kamiah Millner, said, “With being on the court with Mark, I have seen and appreciated what he did for the student body. This year, I love to see the new approach Sid has brought to his title. He has redefined what it means to make your reign yours.” “I would let Sid know that king or not, student comes first so take care of yourself and make sure you’re at a good place so that you can be the best king you can be for your classmates,” said Mark Nicolas, the 2018-2019 King of Orange and Green. Fleeks understands. “Comparison is the thief of joy. I’m my own king. My personal legacy started when I won my title as the first write-in candidate ever for King of Orange and Green,” he said.
Arianna Reamey is a senior public relations major from Detroit, MI. She has interned with Ignition Media Group and The Allen Lewis Agency. She has held several leadership positions in on-campus organizations and is currently interning at VISIT FLORIDA. Sidney Fleeks attended Cedar Hill (TX) High School. A Public Relations major with a creative vision for photography and art. event planning chair for various organizations throughout the campus. He is seeking a Bachelors of Science degree in Public Relations and wants to become a publicist and or event planner.
