GEORGIA MAN AHMAUD ARBERY, SHOT AND KILLED — JOGGING WHILE BLACK By Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire Senior Correspondent

The Legacy of love continues Recently I was waiting with anticipation to hear results from elections at Florida A&M University. There were two young ladies seeking leadership positions at my alma mater and I was so proud of them because they were both worthy candidates and exemplary representatives. Their parents were so proud and with good reason. These two young ladies would make it their business to find me if I was visiting campus, and they were always very respectful and a joy to spend time with, When the news came of their victories, it was the type of news that will be in FAMU’s history books; and that is so exciting! Erika Johnson is the daughter of two of my classmates. Frederick and I entered FAMU together and shortly after Vivian walked on campus. We’ve been friends for more than four decades. Erika ran for Miss FAMU, and won by an overwhelming

Add jogging while Black to the ever-growing list of reasons African Americans continue to be shot down senselessly by armed White men, supposedly under the color of law. Georgia resident Ahmaud Arbery, 25, was shot and killed while jogging after a former police officer and his son chased him down because they “thought he looked like the suspect in a recent string of breakins.” The incident took place two months ago but has come to light after Civil Rights Attorney Lee Merritt and Arbery’s mother, Wanda Cooper, appeared on CNN recently to call for justice. Cooper said police originally told her that her son was involved in a burglary. They claimed there was a confrontation between Arbery and the homeowner and a struggle over a gun. The incident took place in Brunswick, a southeast coastal town in Glynn County, that’s less than five hours from Atlanta. Two district attorneys have recused themselves over possible conflicts of interest, one of whom wrote that Travis McMi-

Norma Adams-Wade Mention the name Dr. M. K. Curry Jr. and the current generation likely will give you a blank stare. Add the name to Bishop College and the blank stare may continue. It’s really not the young one’s fault or the newcomer who has recently settled here. Time moves on, memories fade, new crises replace old ones. But recently conversations with two persons full of memories and artifacts filled my own head with recall, wonder and regrets.

The wonder comes from the mystery of how circumstances can turn a life from distinction to debris. The regret comes from imagining how different this one life would have been if the road has turned right instead of left. Dr. M. K. Curry Jr. was president of Bishop College in Marshall, Texas and when the college moved to Dallas in 1961. Paul Quinn College now occupies the old Bishop College campus. By many accounts Dr. Curry was a brilliant scholar, a decent and polite man, and an insightful, stubborn and determined leader for all the right reasons. Dr. Curry ascended to heights at the helm of the 287-acre

Little Richard, dies at 87 By Lauren Victoria Burke NNPA Newswire Contributor Richard Wayne Penniman, better known as Little Richard, was one of the most influential singer songwriters in popular music. He was one of the founders of Rock n’ Roll in the 1950s and one of the most memorable performers in rock history. Little Richard was born in 1932 in Macon, Georgia. “Tutti Frutti” (1955), one of his signature songs, became a hit reaching the No. 2 on the Billboard chart. Another hit, “Long Tall Sally” (1956), hit No. 1 on Billboard. Two of his songs,”Tutti Frutti” and “Good Golly, Miss Molly” were listed on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. Legend has it that James Brown came up with the Famous Flames debut hit, “Please, Please, Please,” after Richard had written the words down on a napkin. Redding started his professional career with Little Richard’s band, The Upsetters. Bob Dylan performed covers of Little Richard’s songs on piano during a high school talent show with his rock and roll group, the Golden Chords. In 1959, Dylan wrote in his yearbook under “Ambition,” “to join Little Richard.” He was inducted into the

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of its first group of legendary inductees in 1986. He was also inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Little Richard is the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation. Little Richard was ranked eighth on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time and Rolling Stone listed three of Little Richard’s recordings, “The

chael acted out of self-defense, and their actions fell within Georgia’s citizen arrest laws. “The decision to rely on the citizen’s arrest statute is really a recent invention, prior to that they just simply said it was self-defense,” Merritt told CNN, adding that the men are trying to use the law to say they were trying to stop a crime. “According to that law, you actually have to be observing the crime or be in the immediate knowledge of the crime,” Merritt said. “The only thing they have ever said is... that (Arbery) stopped by a house that was under construction and he looked through the window. We don’t know if that happened or not, but even if that did happen, that is not a felony that would invoke the citizen’s arrest statute that would make this allowable.” After the shooting, Gregory McMichael told police he saw the same man “the other night” and that he stuck his hand down his pants on that occasion, leading McMichael to believe he was armed, according to the police report. After seeing Arbery jogging, McMichael then alerted his 34year-old son, Travis, according to a Glynn County Police report. “Travis, the guy is running

AMANDA EDWARDS ENDORSES ROYCE WEST

Endorsement Caps Off Three-Week Period That Includes Endorsement From Major Unions Congressional Blac Caucus PAC

HOUSTON, Texas - The Royce West for U.S. Senate campaign recently announced that former at-large Houston City Councilwoman Amanda Edwards, who placed fifth in the March 3 runoff earning more 189,000 votes and more than ten percent of all votes cast, has endorsed Senator West in anticipation of the July 14 runoff. Edwards issued the following statement announcing her endorsement: The race for United States Senate this year is an important one that will shape the future of our state, and the Senate itself, for years to come. Today, I am proud to announce that I support Royce West for U.S. Senate in the July 14 runoff election. I support Senator West because of his strong Democratic values, and his focus on addressing the issues I care about that impact the lives of Texans and people nationwide. Throughout the course of my campaign, I said this race was about people, and what matters most to us, not politics. I said this race was about healthcare, about providing our communities real leadership, and about finding reforms to ensure previously marginalized voices find their way to the forefront. I am endorsing Royce

Acquaintances said the Magnolia, Arkansas native, Morehouse College Phi Beta Kappa mathematics graduate, and former twotime president of the United Negro College Fund, died at age 77 -the same day the college properties were sold. They said Dr. Curry’s health had deteriorated by then and he was rarely seen in public. “It was very rainy on the day of his funeral, but it was well attended at Mt. Tabor Baptist Church near the campus,” recalled Dr. Harry Robinson Jr., who was the librarian at Bishop College before he led the movement that created the African American Museum at Fair Park. “Dr. Curry’s wife, Mrs. Marjorie Stewart Curry, asked me to read a poem and I did the best I could,” Dr. Robinson said. “One of the highlights of my memory is how Dr. Curry stood up for

West because I believe he will bring about the change we need when it comes to healthcare, climate change, education, criminal justice reform, and many issues I championed as a candidate in this race. When it comes to the issues that I and so many others care about, Royce West has the determination to get things done in Washington, which is why I’m proud to endorse Royce West. Senator West said he was honored to receive Edwards’ endorsement. “Amanda and young leaders like her who

are willing to take a stand for what they believe are the future of the Democratic Party in Texas, and I am honored to have her endorsement and support as we head toward the July runoff,” West said. West’s campaign team noted Edwards’ endorsement brings the total of former contenders in the March 3 primary endorsing the Dallas state senator to 6: Jolt founder and former Worker’s Defense Project Executive Director Cristina Tzintzún Ramirez, former Houston City Councilman and Congressman Chris Bell, Co-Chair of the Texas Poor his students. He was courageous, head-strong, and you could not control him.” I was just thinking... how does a giant of a man or woman adjust to such a fall from grace? With a man like Dr. Curry, whose intentions seemed noble – despite some of his clashes with Bishop students who demonstrated during the 1960s civil rights

Dr. M. K. Curry Jr. era – what is the path to peace of mind? We have examples of falls that are not pleasant to mention: newsman Matt Lauer, entrepreneur and cook Martha Stewart, and entertainers R. Kelley, Bill Cosby, Billie Holiday, and Full House star direction, the police report said. They chased Arbery to a nearby intersection where they caught up to him. The men claimed they told Arbery to stop because they wanted to talk to him. Travis McMichael then exited the truck with the shotgun, and his father claimed at that point Arbery “violently attacked” his son, and they struggled over the gun. Travis McMichael fired two shots, according to the police report, killing Arbery.

People’s Campaign Sema Hernandez, and Beaumont NAACP leader and pastor Michael Cooper. The candidates currently endorsing West represent 826,398 votes from the March 3 primary, said West Communications Director Vince Leibowitz. “The support that has coalesced around Senator West represents more than one million total votes from the March 3 primary, when considered with the Senator’s vote total,” Leibowitz said. “A wide variety of distinguished Democrats from that field, as well as many others, have stepped up to endorse the Senator in recent weeks,” Leibowitz continued. Those groups include the Communication Workers of America, representing more than 64,000 people in Texas, the American Federation of Teachers, The Black Women’s PAC of Texas, and Democracy for America. Additionally, Ambassador Carol Moseley Braun, the first African American female elected to the United States Senate, Louisiana Congressman Cedric Richmond, and Fort Worth City Councilwoman Kelly Allen Gray have all endorsed the Senator in recent weeks, Leibowitz noted. He also said another major announcement was forthcoming, noting the West Campaign was also notified this week that a formal endorsement announcement would be coming soon from the Congressional Black Caucus PAC. A date has not yet been set for the formal release of the announcement.

Lori Loughlin. The mighty fall, but many are not forgotten. Martha Stewart, for example, has returned from serving a felony conviction for stock fraud and gradually resumed her top spot as a business mogul. Rev. Larry J. Sanders Sr. believes a deep spiritual quality sustained Dr. Curry through losing his lofty status. Rev. Sanders was president of the last class of Bishop graduates when it closed in 1988. He was Dr. Curry’s former driver and personal assistant until Curry died, and he has been pastor of Keller Springs Baptist Church in Carrollton for 20 years. “After he left Bishop, people would ask how he was faring, Rev. Sanders said. “I remember him responding often by saying, ‘the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die.” There is so much more to the story of this forgotten giant – stubborn, unrelenting. I hope to revisit his and his family’s life on another occasion. Merritt added that McMichael and his son only had the authority to follow Arbery and send law enforcement to the location. They had no authority to engage him. The 911 calls show a dispatcher questioning McMichael as to what, if anything, Arbery was doing to break the law. NOTE: The McMichaels were arrested, two months later, and both charged with murder.

Mama said there would be days like this QUIT PLAYIN’ Vincent Hall There seems to be no defined author or pen name attached to this ageless anecdote. Some lump it with familiar “old wives tales,” which is categorized as superstition or traditional belief that is regarded as unscientific or incorrect. Mothers have said it for generations and COVID-19 is making it more believable each day. When tragedy strikes a nation that values its dollar signs over your vital signs, this has to be the “days” mama was talking about. Big Mama, been telling you for years that you never miss your water ‘til your well runs dry. America’s rising economic well is now filled with woes. Nana said that all money ain’t good money. You took that with a grain of salt, and now you have to choose whether you want to return to your job at an infected meat plant or try to live long enough to see your children graduate. Grandmother Hall parroted what Grandmother Figures said. “Alright boy, you doing good, but always remember to put something back for a rainy day. Don’t break a dollar to spend a dime.” It’s raining every day now, and the forecast doesn’t seem to show it letting up for another 18 months. What you got saved? Aunt Ora warned, like B.B. King and Ray Charles did, that the same thing that’ll make you laugh will make you cry. Donald Trump knows that now. He laughed as he disassembled Obama’s Pandemic panel, now he’s crying the bitter tears of regret. Regretfully, millions of us are crying as we near 100,000 lost loved-ones within the next 30 days. Aunt Juanita and her husband always had a business of their own. “God Bless the child that’s got his own.” We have watched this shutdown shatter small businesses in our community. Now we must strategize on how to take control of our own. If we could take over the donut shops, hair-care stores, and the nail shops where Black folks live, we

could command billions of dollars each year. Quit Playin’, that’s the original recycling program! Black mothers have said that, “Black don’t crack and Brown don’t frown,” but you cannot tell during this pandemic. Minorities and immigrants are dying like flies; we are dying in bunches, and no one seems to care. The gravity of this nation’s indifference to poor and uninsured people has come down hard. America has always practiced social distancing. What we doing today with this virus is merely physical segregation. America is eight parts cosmopolitan, two parts slum and never the twain do meet. My mama always said, “every tub has to be on its bottom, and everybody gotta meet Jesus for themselves.” She was right. Nobody can protect you from this virus but you and if you don’t know God by now…well Hell!! Commissioner John Wiley Price, who may have been called a “mother” more than once called me and in the course of our discussion, he said, “Mama said that there would be days like this.” She was right, my mothers were right, your mothers are right! As a society of people in a male-dominated society, we have allowed the simple suggestions of our matrons to escape us. Because they lack statistics, higher education or for other reasons, we have discounted what they said. So much of the anecdotal narratives our mothers passed down to us have been rooted and refined in hard times. The survival stories of the Great Depression are dying by way of COVID-19 and many other health complications. Our mother’s prayers are that the youth of this generation will toughen mentally and spiritually because of this existential threat. We should all pray that they learn to save for bad times, relish the good ones, and love their neighbors and this earth in the way God commanded. Mama said there would be days like this. We hate hearing “I told you so,” but you were right all along! Vincent L. Hall is an author, activist, and award-winning columnist.

Fair Housing Not Fair Antoine M. Thompson The Fair Housing Act was signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson on April 11, 1968, one week after the Assassination of the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Initially heralded as a major victory in the movement for Civil Rights in the U.S., the Fair Housing Law prohibited much of the overt or in your face discrimination based largely on race. However, the law lacked teeth for enforcement due to loopholes and much more. Just over 50 years later, housing in the U.S. remains largely racially segregated and very unequal. Discrimination in Purchasing a Home Last year, Newsday, released a report, “Long Island Divided-Investigation,” a two-year investigation of housing discrimination of major southern suburbs of New York City. Prospective Black homebuyers were usually steered to mostly Black neighborhoods, and often required to provide a pre-approval letter from a lender before being shown a home by a real estate agent. The opposite was true for prospective White homebuyers. In fact, at least one Black buyer was told to provide a copy of their tax return prior to being shown a home. This pattern of housing discrimination is not unique only to New York State. Discrimination by Race and Income When the Fair Housing Act was passed it permitted an owner-occupied, two-family home or duplex to engage a limited form of discrimination. Also, religious organizations and private clubs can discriminately limit housing to its members. Further, we know that organizations like the National Fair Housing Alliance and many of their local affiliates often bust unscrupulous landlords for racial bias in renting apartments. Unfortunately, in some neigh-

borhoods in Maryland and across the country it is not uncommon for Black persons to be told that an apartment has been rented, only to be made available for a White person. Additionally, sometimes Black people may have to pay twice the amount of deposit compared to a White person. There remains constant bias in housing against persons on public assistance programs like Section 8 (which provides financial assistance to help pay the rent). Discrimination by Family Composition While the Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination on family status or composition, there continues to be ads on social media, newspapers and other public places where property owners and landlords blatantly break the law. In recent years, Craigslist and Facebook were busted for allowing advertising on their website and social media networks that had postings such as “No tenants with Children.” In recent years, the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development has sued and had various male landlords prosecuted for trying to exchange sex for rent payments with female tenants. More Must Be Done to Stop Housing Discrimination Although the signs may not say, “No Blacks” or “Whites Only,” the legacy of Jim Crow and racial discrimination persists in the housing system with one process for Black people and another for White people. Renting an apartment or buying a home “while Black” needs to become a thing of the past. Increased funding for fair housing monitoring, education and outreach must be expanded at the local, state, regional and national level. Antoine M. Thompson is the Chair of the Board of Housing Options Planning Enterprises (H.O.P.E.) a local community development corporation in Prince George’s County, Maryland. He is also the National Executive Director for the National Association of Real Estate Brokers.

Donald John Trump is hazardous to your health!

THE LAST WORD Dr. Julianne Malveaux The daily White House coronavirus briefings have made me cringe, scream, shake my head, and even laugh! The President of the United States offers medical advice, minimizes the coronavirus, injects partisanship into his remarks, and generally treated these critical briefings as his daily open mike. He uses his bully pulpit to praise and to scold, saving particular scorn for the media. Not only is this man vindictive, but also brusque and churlish. His ignorance hit a nadir, though, when he suggested, on April 23, that sunlight and heat might heal the coronavirus. Then he said that since bleach and other disinfectants could rid surfaces of the coronavirus, bleach and disinfectants might also work on people. His comment was so alarming that Lysol should not be used internally, “Under no circumstances

should our disinfectant products be administered into the human body through injection, ingestion, or any other route,” a Lysol spokesperson told NBC News. A day later, he attempted to explain his remarks, but he outright lied about what he said. Is 45 this ignorant, or is he merely deflecting from the many mistakes he has made, as our nation’s leader, in combatting the deadly and highly infectious virus.? From urging people to go to church on Easter Sunday (he took it back), to telling states they can open for business before testing results are back, he has taken the nation’s health into his hands and imperiled our collective health as a result. Not to mention his enthusiastic embrace of hydroxychloroquine, touting it in several press briefings as a “game-changer.” The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cautioned against the use of the drug except in a hospital setting or clinical trial. Did 45 ask for their advice? Or did he go to med school when none of us were looking? During the daily briefings,

I’ve been extremely impressed by Dr. Anthony Fauci, the blunt-talking director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. While he is not disagreeable, he is not afraid to openly disagree with 45. He’s been leading NAIAD since 1984 and was instrumental in working on ways to contain the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The President seems so tonedeaf to Dr. Fauci’s advice and the advice of Dr. Deborah Birx, the White House Coronavirus Response Coordinator. Previously, she served as the United States Global Coronavirus Response Coordinator. Watching her body language when 45 speaks suggests that she does not have to contradict him verbally to make her displeasure. When he ignores the advice of these medical experts, he endangers our health. According to the President, there has been sufficient testing. Most experts disagree. He says that anyone who wants a test can get one. That’s a bald-faced lie. Indeed Larry Hogan, the governor of Maryland, had to get 500,000 tests from South Korea because the federal government either

Dr. E. Faye Williams, Esq. If we didn’t know before, we now know that we have a failed federal government. The man in the White House is so bad that we don’t really need to look for failures down the line. There was a time Black people could look to the U.S. Supreme Court for justice. At times, we were able to go around our local and state officials and appeal to the feds. The Supreme Court and executive branch are out of the question now! We already know their decisions won’t be in our favor. When we hear the words “Make America Great Again,” we know Trump is not talking about making America great again for us. That would be acting like America was once great for Black people. We can’t look to the federal government for justice in a disaster like the coronavirus. Black people are bearing the brunt of the tragic virus more than anyone. Some want to blame our lifestyle without considering that we’ve never had a chance to heal from the wounds of our circumstances — such as our ancestors being forced out of their natural habitat, forced into inhumane conditions, enslaved once here, lived through Jim Crow, left without equal oppor-

tunities for jobs and education without America making a minimal effort to repair the damage of what our ancestors went through — and what many are still going through. Add to that, white America gave us Donald Trump, who has shown us time and again there’s not a dime’s worth of difference between him and David Duke. At least David Duke was honest. He once said, “Our clear goal must be the advancement of the white race and separation of the white and Black races.” We see the devastating impact of COVID-19 on Black people, so it’s no surprise that we aren’t seeing an increase in testing or any other measures to treat Black people. We have a president who’ll allow us to be the lowest in benefits, but highest in the death rate during this crisis. We see unadulterated greed ruling the day when it comes to our people in every aspect of life. Trump has chosen not to treat vulnerable communities fairly. First lady Melania Trump tried to be better than her husband. She introduced her “Be Best” program. We’ve heard nothing from it lately. She expressed her concern for ridding our nation of bullying. Through his own behavior, her husband has pushed back on these ideas to the point that she has practically disappeared. Despite all the lying and silly behavior from the one who calls himself our best-ever everything, there’s still good in America. The doctors, nurses, aides,

food preparers and deliverers, transportation officials, janitors, first responders and so many others risk their lives to comfort, treat, and assist others at great risk to themselves. Let us thank God for them and work for ways to reward them. Those of us who’ve had the luxury of benefiting from their services must treat them as the special people they are, and work for our nation to honor them in some way when this tragedy is over. That is our challenge. Let us show our gratitude by being better neighbors, better friends. Let’s share what we have with those who have little or nothing. Let’s take better care of our seniors. I’ve asked each of our chapters in NCBW to adopt a senior citizens home. I challenge all to rise above the man in the White House who blames everybody else for the bad but takes credit for the good done by others — while doing nothing to make America great for all of us. When we hear the words

didn’t have them or would not distribute them. Mr. Trump has missed no opportunity to praise himself for doing “a great job” in combatting the coronavirus. He has missed no opportunity to demean or condescend to the media. He has turned a severe world pandemic into a chance to bloviate, lie, and offer self-congratulations. I laugh to keep from screaming, even though since I’m sheltering in place, no one would hear me. While there is nothing funny about a virus that has, in just a couple of months, killed more than 50,000 people, some of the Trump remarks are amusing, amazing, and, ultimately, disgusting. The White House attitude toward the states also endangers our health. Disaster relief funds include money for hospitals. It also has money available for the states. But through a murky set of rules, the states cannot use the funds for state operations, only for COVID-19 related expenses. How do we tell the difference, especially when state operations (including health operations) are strained by the

virus? Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says the states can go bankrupt. These attitudes are hazardous to our health. The President is not concerned with our physical health, but with his political health. That is why he has sparred with governors, the press, and others. That’s why he has been opposed to mail ballots, even as he casts them himself. That’s why he has approached a dire situation with bluster and braggadocio. That’s why he has failed to wear a mask, failing to model the kind of behavior all of us, including his acolytes, should emulate. Scientists are looking for a vaccination against the coronavirus. Our nation needs protection against our President.

“Make America Great Again,” we know Trump is not talking about making America great again for us. That would be acting like America was once great for Black people. We can’t look to the federal government for justice in a disaster like the coronavirus. Black people are bearing the brunt of the tragic virus more than anyone. I ain’t no damned scientist, but this COVID Dude, is not Playin! THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES Thomas Muhammad Correct I called Coronavirus a Dude cause Brothers know Sistahs wouldn’t do this to the world! Yes I’m clear, sometimes Sisters do try our patience. In fact, growing up in da hood, brothers in anger with a Sister, would occasionally shout out “give me back my damn rib!” That’s where the Bible said she comes from right? Father Adam gave up a rib, so we calling in our damned loan! Back to this COVID Dude, where currently with the virus thing is even hitting the wealthy it seems; to have put them in feeling the homeless people’s pain! Fat cats standing out on street corners holding signs exclaiming “will work for food” is quickly becoming the norm as the nation’s food supply is drying up. In less than four months the virus has infected world wide 3.1 million people with half of those cases in the the US where nearly 74,000 had died. I mean this Dude, I call an anti-social disease, is proving

too tough to handle for President Donald Trump and his administration where American citizens get no help from even news sources like Fox News, as they keep harping on their blame game narrative, “it escaped from a lab in Wuhan, China!” Excuse me, but who the hell cares? Let’s just stop the damn thing, okay! I have complete faith in the professional doctors to get us through this. They’ve gone to medical schools, earned the degrees and can provide us with the best solutions if we just follow them and learn patience. But I definitely wouldn’t put any trust in a guy who is not a doctor or scientist and was convicted for illegal prescription drug use! He and I were born in the same month, same day and, yes same year 1/12/1951. I just hope it wasn’t the same hour! Who is “he” you ask? Okay don’t laugh! It’s Rush Limbaugh! Yeah Donald Trumps’ bosom buddy! Now remember you said you weren’t going to laugh! It’s been proven perfectly clear the Donald either is asleep at the switch or has no care for any life other than his, cause

this dude is kicking his and, by default, America’s butt! All happening with a man who will look you straight in the eye and lie like the truth is not in him! This COVID Dude has even shined a huge light on America’s prisons, particularly in rural areas! For decades these majority white communities have used census data

t o get billions from the federal government by counting prisoners as a part of their towns. Yeah righ!t I hear you, that is funny, but it can be extremely deadly for prison inmates and even prison guards who live in these communities!

These places have become areas where “social distancing” is completely impossible and the virus is spreading like wildfire behind prison walls and guards are likely taking it home to their families. And look at the folk Trump has put in charge like this guy Brian Harrison who used to run a small business called “Dallas Labradoodles!” Yeah he’s from my “homey,” but he has no education in public health, management, or even medicine. The only thing he’s known for is being the man who successfully breeded a labradoodle but he’s tapped to lead the US pandemic task force which will probably be the most powerful position of our life time! Wow! It’s bad enough this President spends his every waking hour watching and listening to the “Great Enabling Talking Heads” at Fox like Tucker Carson who claimed that this “virus didn’t turn out to nearly be deadly as we thought it was!” And I’m like, huh! The US has over a million infected people that we know of and have over 70 thousand dead that’s not deadly! Remember the latest prediction was 74,000 would die by August. We are early

May and we’ve already about to reach that milestone, you think? And since the Donald refuses to do nationwide testing as the science community has recommended, we won’t really know the true picture of just how bad a shape the country’s really in. So now the medical experts from around the world are resorting to test on sewers through wastewater places to try and get a trace on where the virus is spreading, because after all everybody uses the toilet, right? lol! Man, I too wish this COVID Dude was gone like tomorrow, but that’s not what we see happening and for now too many doctors have been right thus far! I definitely refuse to take any chances cause a nut sitting safely in the White House or his crackpots sitting safely behind mics at a tv studio tells me it’s safe to go out, and protest stay at home orders or mingling in large crowds! No way or as our sisters would say at a moment like this, “NOT!” The Struggle Continues... Thomas Muhammad is Chairman of the National Black United Front (NBUF)- Dallas Texas Chapter

When The Boat Feels Unstable FAITHFUL UTTERANCES Dr. Froswa Booker This has been a difficult week. The last few days have been a roller coaster of emotions. I struggle with severe allergies and was in the Emergency Room Monday night. This time, the symptoms were different than my previous analphalytic episodes. I had an idea when it started that this could result in something familiar but some of the occurrences were new. There was still the itching, bumps and some swelling but now I experienced tightness and redness. Immediately, I knew that I had to get out the big guns and take meds including my EPI pen. As we drove to the emergency room and I entered,it, it too,was familiar and yet, different. I couldn’t have family with me. My temperature was tested immediately. I was in my room alone with just the physicians observing my vitals while administering ster-

oids. My fears about COVID-19 began to swirl in my mind-what if I got sick here? What if I need to stay over night again and go to ICU? I became vigilant in being mindful of my surroundings. What I might have taken for granted before, I couldn’t this time. And just like each time before, I made it. I was released home in just a few hours, feeling better and with a game plan to address with my allergist. I think my situation this week is a reminder of what many of us are going through now. We’ve been down paths of uncertainty before. We know what it is like to wonder if God will bring us through it but each time, our emotions take over. We become frightened, angry, sad, and even scared. This isn’t the first time in our lives that we didn’t have all of the answers or details but we knew that we would get through it. We knew the outcome, no matter how difficult, would be in our favor. And yet, with this knowledge, we continue to go through our moments of despair when we see situations on the horizon

that look familiar to those past pains. We fail to remember how God is faithful and has always brought us through even when the answer may not have been what we wanted or expected. The story of Jesus calming the storm is so significant for us today. The disciples were in the boat with God and had been several times before. They had also seen storms, I’m sure, but on this particular day, no matter how familiar it seemed, they felt different. They felt afraid. 35 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. 40 He said to his disciples,

“Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”(Mark 4:35-41 New International Version (NIV)) Our boats will be rocked. There will be storms that rage sometimes uncontrollably without end it feels like at times. Even if we’ve been there before, those feelings of fear and trepidation still appear and we ask God is He there? Does he understand what I’m going through and what we must remember is that He is in the boat with us. He is close and He will never leave us even when it looks like we will be overtaken in an experience that maybe fa-

miliar and yet, seems different than before. At times, it seems as if Jesus is asleep as if He doesn’t know what is going on. He’s aware and cares for each of us. God is consistent. Hold on to that when your boat is rocked and know that He is with you... always. I love my mama, but not like you think A HEALTHY MIND Dr. Stacia Alexander I remember the first time I resented my mama. It was not because she told me I could not have candy or I could not go to a friend’s house. No, it was not anything like that at all. The first time I resented her was for what I perceived as weakness. She and my father were arguing and he told her to leave. I immediately grabbed my things to go with her and we walked out of the house. She did not have her keys. “So what,” shouted my little seven-year-old mouth. “We can walk.” She looked so defeated and I was energized. I do not recall feeling sorry for her at that point. And neither do I recall feeling protective of her. I was angry. I was angry at my daddy but I was more angry at her. By second grade, I’d had at least three fights and I felt I could handle anything. I figured if I could handle people my age, surely she could come up with a way to win this fight. We did not leave that night and my daddy made us come inside. He sat us in front of the fire and said we would never be

forced to leave the house again. He promised hewould leave before he allowed us to leave the family home. He made good on his promise and was gone within six months. From that point on, the love between my mama and I changed. Looking back on it, I can now see how absolutely angry I was at her for her response to the trauma of losingher marriage. And although I am certain she made some choices that worsened her situation, I did not make it any better. I was what is now labeled as a “strong-willed child.” You could tell me “no” and I could give you 15 reasons why you really wanted to tell me “yes.” By the time I was in middle school, I actually had to cuss at my mama for her to stop me in my tracks with whatever was in her possession. Sometimes, it was a shoe. One time, it was a Stephen King book. I actually yelled at her, “You could have killed me with that!” when it flew past my head. Otherwise, she let me do what I wanted to avoid an argument or the slightest hint of conflict. In my early 20’s, we had one of many huge arguments about her life. She looked at me and said she felt like I was the only reason God had allowed her time on this earth.

There was a shadow of sadness in my heart for her feeling so useless that she did not value her blessing of life any more than it stretched beyond me. Many years later, I began to accept my mother for the wonderful person she is. Not because she became more assertive or because she changed her approach to life. I began to love her unconditionally when I realized her response was not about me. Her spirit is quiet and all she was searching for was peace. I knew I had healed when I asked her nearly 20 years ago to move in with my family. It took her a while to give up the vices which I would not allow in our home. When she moved in, she was like a child who had been abused her entire life. She stayed to herself and only came out when we left the home. I knew she was moving about but I allowed her time to acclimate to all of the assertive and strong spirits running around her – my family. Then one day, she came to me and said, “Thank you.” I kept cooking until a gentle nudging told me to stop and listen to her. When I turned, she had tears in her eyes as I do now. She so quietly explained that she was thankful for peace. She said she had never known

peace like the peace we have in our home. That resonated with me because through all the chaos of my childhood, I held on to the promise of peace by God. I stayed in somebody’s church on Sunday, bible study, vacation bible school, church camp, or something. Along the way, a teacher shared that even when things go wrong, one can have peace. This stayed with me because I often prayed for peace. I knew when I did not have peace, it was because I was out of God’s will. When my mama moved in with us, she saw us running a

margin. What is really historic about her election is that the Johnson family is not unfamiliar to campaigning and winning elections. In 1981, Vivian was elected Miss FAMU. In 2011, their son, Frederick Jr. was elected Mr. FAMU. In 2017, Michelle Marva, the Johnson’s oldest daughter was elected Miss FAMU! And now: in 2020 Erika will wear the crown. The Johnsons love FAMU, and not just because of the “royalty” element. Both Frederick and Vivian are devoted supporters and have served in leadership positions with the D-FW FAMU Alumni Association. They have generations of FAMU Love! Which brings me to my truth! Support of and love for historically Black colleges and universities is paramount. I absolutely love it when I see generational love for our HBCUs. One year I was at a reception at Paul Quinn College when a professor from Africa approached me. Him: Professor Smith, What is a Delta? Me: Excuse me? Him: What’s a Delta? Me: It’s my sorority, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc! Him: Oh. I asked your daughters (Annya 9 and Ayanna 6) where they were going to college and they said, “FAMU.”

household in God’s will. I love her so completely and I love God even more so. Because of Him, I can forgive her for all the times I did not love her. I know she has forgiven me for all of the times I did not love her. We are in such a beautiful and peaceful place and I am eternally thankful for God putting us each on this earth to be an instrument for one another.

Me: Yes, of course! Him: And then I asked them what they were going to be and they said, ‘a Delta.’ All I could do was smile! I probably had the same smile on my face that Vivian had when she received the news about Erika’s victory. Truth be told, I was actually relieved to hear Erika’s news because I know the pressure was on. People talk and her freshman year they were already asking if she was going to follow in her mom and sister’s footsteps. Then there is Carrington Whigham, the daughter of Andrew III and Deardra HayesWhigham. Andrew was president of the FAMU Student Government Association in 1986-1987 (Centennial SGA President), where he managed a $500,000 budget. Dr. Deardra did not attend FAMU, but she’s an HBCU alum and we love her too! Carrington, like Erika, landed on campus taking full advantage of the FAMU experience, serving as a leader and making everyone proud.

ERIKA JOHNSON

She was elected Student Government Association Vice President in a high-powered election where she and her running mate, Xavier McClinton showcased their leadership skills and ability to connect with the student body. A graduate of Dallas’ historic `Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, like Erika, Carrington is talented, smart and an absolute joy. A participant in Sen. Royce West’s Dr. Emmett J. Conrad Leadership Program, Carrington is a broadcast journalism major with a minor in theater. She will undoubtedly be a candidate for other positions in the future. Keep your eyes on her! These young ladies’ parents

were fine examples for them and then too, there’s something about FAMUly. Andrew the IV, attends the University of Miami and he did follow in his dad’s footsteps, like Frederick Jr. followed Sr., and pledged Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. Vivian, Deardra, Michelle and Carrington are all members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Legacy is important. FAMU was good enough for us and it is good enough for our children. We have to do better, all HBCU alums. Give money. Encourage others to attend these important institutions. Carrington and Erika are the products of self love!

Part 1: Wig’d Out ABOUT THE HAIR Dr. Linda Amerson Most women love the versatility wigs provide. Wigs can bring out your alter ego. Seriously! Wigs are designed to look very natural. From short and sassy, long lengths to the floor, bright colors, blonde, brunette, high-lights, red heads, partials, lace frontal, and more. Women, teenagers, and some children wear wigs for various reasons — lazy hair day or to hide hair loss/hair thinning issues are the top two reasons. Social embarrassment is a true factor for wig wearers. A LIL’ Wig History History reveals that in 16th century Europe practically everyone wore a wig. Wigs were equally popular with the Greeks

and Romans. Did you know that in Rome there were statues with marble wigs, which were removable? This was possible so wigs could be changed with shifts in fashion. The laurel wreath crowning of great victors, king’s crowning on male wigs, and the queen’s tiara, were all symbolic of status on wigs. In addition, it represented the fertile powers of human hair and of the sun. Elaborate wigs made of silver and gold have been found in Egyptian tombs. In the 17th and 18th centuries, men wore wigs as often as women. In fact, the most powerful men in society wore large powdered wigs. Today’s wigs are made from a variety of fibers: human and synthetic hair, mixtures of synthetic and human hair, yarn, fabric, as well as animal hair imported from many countries is the most popular. Because there is no regulation

currently in place for imported hair, there is an enormous demand for (any) hair for image boosting. Many consumers are unaware of the fact, they may be purchasing flowing or curly hair, made from sheep, horse hair, or camels, just to name a few. Unfortunately, labels are not required to inform consumers about animal or synthetic hair blends. The price of synthetic hair may range from $20-$300. Human hair wigs may range from $500-$2000, or more. Some of the top celebrity wig makers include: Kim Kimble, Stacy Butterworth, Shon Hyungsun Ju, Isaac Davidson, Terrence Davidson, Larry Sims, Troy Mitchell, Nabil Harlow, Tokyo Stylez, and Akki Shirakawa. You dirty low down… ASK ALMA Alma Gill Dear Alma, I was recently informed by my unofficial supervisor that a co-worker wants to confront me. The co-worker said I didn’t speak and may have been influenced against her by someone else. My initial reaction was disbelief. This co-worker is in her 40s and losing sleep over this! When I first took the job, a mutual friend said I should reach out to her because we come from the same area and know some of the same people. So I was a little thrown when, at our initial meeting, she came with attitude. Since then, I’ve worked with her on several projects, only to be burned with little to no explanation. My co-workers and I have noticed that she uses her gender and race to blame others for her shortcomings. She even accused me of being friends with

“them.” I try to interact with this woman as little as possible since she is like a Teflon pan when it comes to responsibility. How do you remain the bigger person when she’s making preemptive strikes against you to people in authority? Should I tell crazy to kick rocks with a witness present or should I begin my own plan of attack, knowing this could go horribly wrong? Anonymous Dear Anonymous, Kick rocks, toss rocks, bury rocks in the sand? Hmmmm… let me ponder. First, never make a move because of something you “heard” from somebody else. This applies to situations inside or outside the workplace. Usually, what you hear from others has been added to like a cake baked from scratch. Deal with people based on what they say to you directly, face to face, and what they do in your presence. Now, on to your co-worker. It’s clear that you don’t like the woman and you’ve made up

your mind that you don’t want much to do with her – for good reason – and that’s ok. Still, you should maintain a respectful work relationship with her. You aren’t obligated to do anything more than that. If she decides to “confront” you, be prepared. If she asks why you didn’t speak to her, say it was probably because you didn’t see her and nothing more than that. Don’t include yourself in her madness. And above all, stop participating in office smokescreens. When others start to roll & smoke that blunt of gossip, you should walk away. Don’t puff, don’t pass, don’t play. Remember, when you aren’t around, they may very well talk about you, too. I’m thinking nope, there’s no need to tell crazy to kick rocks or begin a plan of attack. Be you, and be the most sophisticated, super-fly, bad to the bone you, you can be. If all hell breaks loose, let her know you ain’t no ride or die chick. Some of us have questions, like, where we going and why I gotta die? LOLOLOL.

All Day and a Night HOLLYWOOD’S REVIEW Hollywood Hernandez In the movie All Day and a Night, Jahkor Abraham Lincoln is played by Ashton Sanders, from the movie Moonlight. He struggles to keep his dream of being a rapper alive; however, instead, he follows in the footsteps of his abusive father in the middle of a gang war in Oakland. He ends up in prison alongside his father. His life as a drug dealer and real-world responsibilities with a young pregnant girlfriend drive him further and further across the line of right and wrong with tragic consequences. Landing in prison beside his father, J.D. (Jeffrey Wright, Westworld) whom he never wanted to be like, Jahkor embarks on an unlikely journey of self-discovery, exploring the events that unite them, in hopes of helping his newborn son break a cycle that feels unavoidable. The young want to be rapper has a baby and the boy seems doomed to follow the family’s legacy of a life behind bars and a life of crime. All Day and a Night is a powerful film and gripping tale written and directed by Black Panther co-writer Joe Robert Cole. In Cole’s directorial debut he crafts a story about the cycle

that affects many men young of color who have limited options to provide for their family and break the cycle of poverty. Ashton Sanders does an excellent job playing a character who has a lot of love for his family; however, he is also a brutal killer who lands in jail. The drama co-stars Isaiah John (Snowfall), Kelly Jenrette (The Handmaid’s Tale), Shakira Ja’nai Paye (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse), Regina Taylor (The Unit), Christopher Meyer (The Affair), and Yahya Abdul-Mateen from Watchmen. All Day and a Night is a tragic story of a son following his father’s life of crime. It’s a story told with a very dark undertone that will affect you. The movie is rated R for violence and has a run time of 2 hours. On my “Hollywood Popcorn Scale,” I rate this movie a LARGE.

HE IS A SERIAL RAPIST

He targeted members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. but this is more than about a sorority. We’re talking about a community. Come on PEOPLE! Don’t you CARE? Will it matter when it is your sister, mother, aunt or grandmother or maybe YOU?

I refuse to allow this sadness to destroy my heart. Love is not banished by death. Bruised, yes. Tattered, yes. Displaced, oh, yes. But, never destroyed. No matter how dark your sorrow, love will grow forth.
