MY TRUTH by Cheryl Smith, Publisher
It’s that time of the year
Another year is rapidly coming to a close and I can’t help but to recap the past year and look forward with anticipation. 2019 was a very exciting year for me because there were so many exciting memories and milestones. I said hello to my newest grandchild, D-Square (actually his name is Davion); my girl (aka Surrogate) Amanda Fitzpatrick and hubby Yusuf welcomed Naomi; and I said farewell to some very special people including 100 year-old legend Garth Reeves; classmates; Sorors Michelle Raglon and Olivia Frazier Kerr; longtime friends Carolyn Davis and fellow Rattler Juanita Benson; as well as the loved ones of many I love. There have been some disappointments and many causes for celebration over the past year. Everyone can’t handle the emotional DECEMBER 27, 2019
rollercoaster. Sometimes help is needed. Which brings me to my truth. December has always been challenging for me since 1969. I remember opening gifts that Christmas morning and hearing the phone ring. Next thing I knew the joy had gone out of the day because the news from the phone call was that my 93-year-old grandfather, Remer Smith, had died. Christmas Day was never the same. Then over the years, I’ve suffered other losses that have sent me into deep thought; like the death of my father on December 8, 2004 and my Godmother, Liz on December 22, 2008. Most who really know me, knew of my fondness for the Godfather of Soul, James Brown. You see, growing up Mr. Brown was there for me

in times when I really felt alone. He could put a smile on my face and a song in my heart. And that in itself is very telling. As a 10-year-old; I remember going to a concert with relatives in Florida. After the concert, we were escorted back stage and given the choice of meeting five nappy-headed, smelly boys, or the Godfather and the songbird, Lyn Collins. I chose the Godfather. After we met and said a few words, he kissed me on my cheek. I was overjoyed! In fact I said then I would never wash my cheek again, but I forgot which one it was. I also met Ms. Collins and I was told that I met the boys also, but if I did I don’t recall the boys. Can you guess who those boys were? Well anyway, decades later, I had a phone interview with Mr. Brown. It myimessenger.com
was wonderful. I told him about that meeting and we talked about family and life. When I told Mr. Brown that my father lived about an hour and a half away from his home in Augusta, GA, he invited me to visit the next time I was in town. Oh how I looked forward to that visit! As our interview came to a close, he asked me if I was coming to his concert in Grand Prairie. I told him “no” but he asked me again. Unfortunately I had already given my tickets to super writer Vincent Hall, but Mr. Brown said no worries, he had me covered. I went to the concert alone and had a great time. When I visited him in his dressing room, we had a great time talking. Before I departed Mr. Brown kissed me on both cheeks so I wouldn’t forget this time! I had such a good feeling and that feeling was with me a few year’s later when I received word of his passing. So many people called to see how I was doing. That a year prior my dad had passed, just added to the myimessenger.com

all the chemicals that enter our bodies and how many young people are coming here filled with mind-altering chemicals; well, the need for psychological intervention is important. For that and other reasons, mental health is a component of the Realizing the Dream Healthy Living Expo at the African American Museum on January 20, 2020. We need to address the issues effecting our families and communities. Mental illness is real. It’s nothing to be ashamed of. And sometimes you need someone to talk you through the challenging times in life. Sure every month can be challenging but even the Center for Disease control reports that December is not the month when most suicides occur. Still the holiday cheer does make one reflect on those not there to share the times, which could lead to depression. There is help. Let’s get it and give it! COACH JAMES Earnest R. James was the twelfth and final child born to Lola Mae and Aaron James on July 11, 1938, in Daingerfield, TX. As a child, he attended St. James United Methodist Church, built and organized by his late grandfather, Jesse James. Earnest moved to Dallas, TX, with his family at the age of nine. In 1956, at 16, he graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. He then went on to earn his Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Wiley College in 1960 and his Masters Degree in Education from North Texas State University (now University of North Texas) in 1963. He later met and married Jovern Kelley and together they had one daughter, Kelly Michelle. While an undergraduate at Wiley, Earnest began what would become his life’s work and legacy. He became the school’s football athletic trainer thus developing his love of coaching and mentoring. Immediately following his graduation in 1960, Earnest remained at Wiley to become the physical education instructor, assistant football coach, head track coach and assistant Dean of Men. In 1962, Coach James brought his talent to the Dallas Independent School District as the physical education teacher and athletic coach at his alma mater, Booker T. Washington High School. However, it is his career at Roosevelt High School for which Coach James is most noted. He is often quoted as saying, “find a job you love and you will never work a day in your life.” This is true of his career at Roosevelt High School as a social studies teacher, assistant football myimessenger.com

We need to hear from Mick Mulvaney, the acting White House chief of staff, who admitted to Mr. Trump’s bribery scheme on live television, and from the former national security adviser, John Bolton, who has been shopping stories about Mr. Trump to book publishers instead of speaking with Congress. Every senator should want to hear from anyone who can speak directly to the president’s misconduct related to the articles of impeachment. Even Richard Nixon allowed the key figures behind the Watergate scandal to speak to Congress, and he eventually turned over incriminating portions of his Oval Office recordings to investigators. But Mr. Trump has stonewalled Congress and inhibited our ability to seek justice by demanding that those closest to the center of the Ukraine scandal stay silent. Senators must be allowed to subpoena relevant witnesses and submit questions to them directly. The Senate should not vote on any article of impeachment or consider a motion to dismiss the trial until we have reviewed the additional testimony and evidence that Mr. Schumer has requested. No court would allow a trial to proceed this way, and neither should any member of the Senate. Ensuring the integrity of this trial is a solemn responsibility for every senator, with consequences that extend far beyond any one presidency. My colleagues and I have a duty to use our voice and our vote to insist on a fair trial, rooted in the pursuit of truth. We must demonstrate to the American people that in our system of justice all are equal under law, and that there are not two sets of rules, one for Donald Trump and another for everybody else. We must conduct the Senate impeachment trial in a way that is fair and that reflects impartial justice. History will judge the actions taken by the United States Senate at a time when our Constitution and the rule of law were at stake. “Let me tell you a story” I WAS JUST THINKING...
A. MACEO SMITH DR. HARRY ROBINSON, JR. TERRY ALLEN
By Norma Adams-Wade
Dallas public relations and marketing juggernaut Terry Allen said he remembers those words as a familiar line from his mentor -- Dr. Harry Robinson Jr., founding director, president and chief executive officer of the African American Museum in Fair Park. Allen shared this anecdote about his mentor while he himself was being honored for achievements in business at the 34th A. Maceo Smith Community Service Awards Brunch on December 14. The African American Museum sponsors the awards. Allen was one of seven local achievers DECEMBER 27, 2019
who received the award in different categories. A recurring theme in remarks from each recipient was the need to inspire and prepare someone to follow your footsteps or later fill your seat; to not climb to the top alone. “Go find someone and bring them along with you,” Allen said, making the point that he had mentors who helped him along the way. “I (personally) am grateful to Dr. Robinson...I can’t thank (him) enough. He helped me to feel like a superstar.” Robinson Jr.’s expertise mainly is in library science and research. But Allen said Robinson Jr., 78, was

a reliable fount of general wisdom whenever he (Allen) needed a jumpstart during some business snag or a lift when he felt downcast during some task. I was just thinking how Robinson’s Jr.’s impact with the museum in Dallas is strong enough that earlier this year some supporters tried to launch an effort to name the museum in his honor while he is alive. They cited the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit, renamed in 1998 for its founder, physician Dr. Charles H. Wright who was alive when the museum was renamed. He died four years later at age 83. myimessenger.com
Allen urged the audience at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel to be more dedicated to preparing a new generation of leaders and community advocates – particularly among young African-Americans. Failing to prepare will mean that other races will fill the seats that African Americans fought to gain as a way to advance our culture, Allen said. “I need you to do one thing,” Allen said. “Help me to identify my replacement (and yours) when our fire is quenched.” Museum trustee board chair Rev. Vonciel Jones Hill reiterated Allen’s admonition to prepare young successors for our seats and complimented Dr. Robinson Jr.’s example. “Terry is correct,” Rev. Hill said. “We have to bring along the next generation. ...I am so glad that Dr. Robinson and ... (his supporters) had the good sense to bring along the next generation.” Rev. Hill also paid tribute to her predecessor myimessenger.com
as board chair, the late Dr. Wright Lassiter Jr. who died July 2 at age 85. She and entrepreneur Matt Houston, who moderated the program, urged guests and the public to support the museum in Lassiter’s fashion by giving of their time, finances and “kind words.” They also said the award’s namesake, A. Maceo Smith, was the guiding light for business and community service in Dallas’ African American community. Smith organized the Dallas Black Chamber of Commerce (previously the Dallas Negro Chamber of Commerce) in 1933. He came to Dallas as a high school teacher and began a crusade of founding African American organizations and movements to advance voting, education, business and community development, and cultural pride. He became a U. S, Department of Urban Development executive
and achieved heights such that a downtown Dallas federal building is named in his honor. In his benediction, Rev. Mark Proctor summed up the program’s recurring theme: “We are not truly a success, until we have a successor,” Rev. Proctor said. Other award recipients and their categories were: Joyce Foreman, Dallas school board trustee (education); Lyria Howland, public relations and diversity strategist (youth involvement and mentorship); Paulette Johnson, Trucker’s Café owner and chef (civic engagement & human services); Alyson Rae Lawson, 7-11 franchise owner/business & finance executive (under age 40 achiever); Vicki Meek, independent art curator and arts administrator (art & culture); Earl Thompson, school coach and North Texas youth Football League president (youth involvement shared with Lyria Howland). STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER By Hollywood Hernandez STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER is the ninth installment in the STAR WARS movie series and somewhere at about the sixth movie the series got really way off course after George Lucas left the series and most of that blame went to J.J. Abrams. In this final STAR WARS movie Abrams should get the credit for wrapping up the movie series on a positive note. While some of the previous movies were a bit confusing and figuring out the new characters without a program was a real task for the average moviegoer THE RISE OF SKYWALKER is a straight-ahead story myimessenger.com
of good against evil in a story that is easy for the most casual of STAR WARS fans to understand. The movie also has some surprises and the alien creatures are back as the best of the best from any previous movie. With the exception of the original, the final STAR WARS saga may be the most enjoyable of them all. It’s an interesting, yet simple plot. The Resistance faces The First Order, the good guys vs the bad guys, for one last time with some great plot twist 17
and special effects. Rey, played by Daisy Ridley, leads the Jedi rebels against The Sith, who are led into battle by Kylo Ren, played by Adam Driver. The evil Galactic Emperor, Palpatine, played by Scottish actor Ian McDiarmid, is just as creepy and sinister as he was in the previous STAR WARS movies beginning with the 1980s THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. Chewey, Lando (Billy Dee Williams), Finn, played by John Boyega, and all of the good characters from
the previous movies like C-3PO, and R2-D2 are all back for this one last goround for the movie. Carie Fisher appears through archival footage and Mark Hamill is in the finale as Luke Skywalker. In what promises to be one of the eagerly anticipated movies of the holiday season moviegoers will be delighted with this final STAR WARS movie. The movie is rated PG-13 and runs 2 hours and 21 minutes. On my “Hollywood Popcorn Scale Rating” STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER gets my highest possible rating A JUMBO (with extra butter)!

THAT CELEBRITY INTERVIEW
VH 1 Black Ink Crew
By VALDER BEEBE
Interviewing millennial reality show stars is always revealing. In conjunction with talking about their upcoming season 6, Black Ink Crew’s Charmaine’s responded to an audience member’s questions about gun violence in Chicago. Ryan Henry’s success and hustle with his tattoo business has broken down barriers and established 9MAG into one of the most sought-after tattoo shops in Chicago. This season, the stakes are high for Ryan as he enters therapy after realizing he’s been using his shop to avoid dealing with the death of his sister. With the help of his brothers Don and Phor, Ryan is determined to keep his circle tight, and continue to develop his relationship with his son while co-parenting with Rachel. With the help of a renowned British tattoo artist, they plan to employ true Chicago natives, who have struggled through the system and know how to work a tattoo gun. This massive shakeup in the Windy City tattoo industry threatens to take 9MAG’s spot at the top.-Text provided by Black Ink Crew publicists in conjunction with the Valder Beebe Show. VBS: Ryan & Charmaine you are here to represent VH1 Black Ink Crew. Charmaine you are representing
women entrepreneurs in a non-traditional female business. CW: It’s really an honor being in the position that I am in, yet being male or female being an entrepreneur is challenging. I’m the owner of the first owned and operated female Tattoo shop in Chicago. The audience will see a female owner who is not a tattoo artists owing and manage a Tattoo shop which has been a male dominated business field. RH: This is going into our sixth season. You see me become an adult and being a man. VBS: Becoming an adult, let’s expound on that. You have made the decision to seek

therapy which is a nontraditional choice for African Americans, especially males. Tell my audience a little about that choice. RH: ABSOLUTELY! Being accountable for my actions. Moving forth and growing in what I am doing. Looking back on five-10 years ago I felt I could solve my problems. Now being mature looking forward and getting a different view is what going to therapy provided me in solving business and personal challenges. VEB: This is for you from our Facebook audience. A recent weekend 15 people were caught in gun violence in Chicago. Your shop is in Chicago, how does that impact your business? CH: The violence impacts the entire city of Chicago no matter where you are located. We‘re somewhat sheltered because…… Black Ink Crew full i n t e r v i e w - Yo u Tu b e. com/valderbeebeshow

ABOUT YOUR HAIR BY DR. LINDA AMERSON
The 411: Top 5 Beauty Dislikes of Women
www.hairandscalpessentials.com
You have read what a few men shared in The 411. Now you will hear from women what they like in men regarding beauty and grooming. Men sometimes need suggestions/assistance from a friend, girlfriend or wife to help him stay totally together. On the other hand, there are some men who have the grooming and beauty department down pat! Women will notice when a ‘together brother’ walks into the room looking and smelling good! There’s something about that confident (not arrogant) walk! Read the top 5 beauty dislikes women shared to enlighten men. LaNette Kincaide, Just Pearlz Jewelry 1) No teeth!!! 2) Men with large unkempt beards 3) Hair bumps on back, neck or face 4) Hair growing on or out of ears. 5) Men with dirty unkempt nails or feet Anonymous, Business Owner 1) Missing teeth! Any man over 30 is responsible for replacing and repairing their teeth--and please no gold teeth replacements. 2) Body odor combined with bad breath will run me away quickly! 3) Rough hands, and dirty fingernails. Some men have DECEMBER 27, 2019
told me that rough hands is a sign of a working man, and they do not want any soft hands. I do not like rough hands touching me. 4) A man who never offers to massage my tired feet. This can be a turn on! 5) Unkempt beards and mustache. 6) Excessive tattoos--visible on neck and face. 7) Smoking! Cigarettes and cigars. 8) Chewing snuff. Doris Thomas, Catering 1) Dirty fingernails. 2) Body odor 3) Smoking 4) Talking with every other word a curse word. 5) Unemployed, at home with momma, and no car! 6) Toothless! Please get them fixed or get dentures! 7) Uneducated Cheryl Smith, Reporter, Radio Host 1) Poor body hygiene 2) Tats on face, neck or legs 3) Rough feet 4) Poor dental hygiene 5) Flab Anonymous, Professional Exec. Sec. 1) Dirt under fingernails 2) Out of shape for his age 3) Scraggly/unkempt beard or mustache 4) Poor oral hygiene 5) Spends too much time grooming Ivy N. McQuain, Written by

INC, Author 1) Ungroomed hair. I know that some men like to look rough and touch, but it bothers me to see any man with their hair not freshly shaven. 2) I love a taper cut on a man--but cannot stand for a man to keep his hair all wild and crazy looking. This goes double for men with dreadlocks. Tip fellas, keep your twists and locks up. 3) Unhealthy looking teeth. Ugh! Your smile is one of the most important things you wear, next to clothes, so when you smile and your teeth are missing, stained or look like a war broke out in your mouth, it is a complete turnoff. Go to the dentist! Not just to have a pretty smile but because poor dental care can and will lead to other health issues. 4) Too much style! Yes I love for a man to be fashionable and trendy but when it looks like he is trying to be the next regular Usher or Lil Wayne then it’s too much. The keys to fashion is making it your own and moderation. Do not walk around in sagging skinny jeans. Matter of fact, just don’t sag or wear skinny jeans. 5) Busted and crusty feet. I know men think going to the nail salon is for women, but it’s not. Men need to take careof their feet with simple tricks like lotion and clipping your toes nails. It doesn’t hurt for you to get the dead skin off of your heels and to
invest in eliminating corns and bunions. That doesn’t make you a manly man to go around tearing up bed sheets. 6) Dirty fingernails. I can’t stand a man with dirty fingernails. Talk about drive me crazy. No you don’t have to run to the nail salon to keep up a fresh manicure, but at the least clean and trim your nails, and not with your teeth. Anonymous, Engineer 1) Yellow teeth 2) Unkempt appearance (i.e. torn clothing, dirty clothing, clothes with stains) 3) Too focused on himself 4) Not interested in what interests me 5) Selfish Well men you have heard from these women’s viewpoint. We hope these two articles have enlightened you and sparked some discussions. All questions should be forwarded to worldrenowned Trichologist, Dr. Linda Amerson 817 265 8854.
