I always vote but I haven’t always been happy with the choices. For numerous reasons, there have been times when I have had to hold my nose, say a prayer and even shake my head as I cast that oh so important vote. And for years I have written about elections; my first was the presidential election that pitted President Jimmy Carter and Republican nominee Ronald Reagan. her last race and then retiring, only to step down less than an hour before the filing deadline and then her son filed for the seat. She said it wasn’t planned. But the possible opponent all stood aside to let her have that last hurrah! Boy they felt hoodwinked! A seat she held for almost 30 years fell into the lap of her son! Corrupt politicians became the topic of discussion for months! Then you hear some people who run for office proclaim that they are “not politicians.” Well, once you get involved in politics, guess what? You are by definition a politician and actually everything becomes political; so you have to get with the program. That doesn’t mean that you have to become corrupt, that you no longer have a

conscience, or you can’t do the right thing. I think I am more concerned about the corrupt citizens who don’t do what they are supposed to in order to make the system work. You have to vote. And these parties, well we’re going to have to take a deep dive into the party system that exploits, distorts, disenfranchises, manipulates…let me stop. I think I am going to take Alayna out for dinner. Not because she voted (don’t want to be accused of bribery or anything else trumped up). Instead, I will take her out to dinner because she told me that she voted! I just hope millions of others in her generation will make voting a priority. I didn’t ask her who she voted for, but she did say she voted for the ticket that she would be proud admitting to supporting when talking with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Clearly she wants to be on the right side of history! We stand united!

By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson One veteran lost to suicide is too many. This year, on any given day, it is estimated that over 20 veterans take their lives. Families lose loved ones, communities lose neighbors, and our nation loses heroes.

I have dedicated my career to supporting our veterans – first as the Chief Psychiatric Nurse at the Dallas VA Medical Center and now as a Member of Congress fighting on behalf of those served. As the granddaughter, daughter, niece, wife, and sister of veterans, I recognize the importance of supporting our servicemen and women both on and off the battlefield. It is more important now than

ever before that we commit the necessary resources and care to overcome this national crisis. That is why I worked with my colleagues in Congress to pass legislation designating the three-digit 9-8-8 as the new, simpler number for the National Suicide Hotline. When enacted, this bill will make it easier for veterans to access help and treatment during a time of need. We owe our veterans a limitless debt of gratitude for the many sacrifices they made on behalf of our country. Although the month of September has been dedicated as Suicide Prevention Awareness

Month - the need to address Veterans’ issues are on-going. Let us continue to show our support for the men and women who have worn the uniform. Monsters are scary, so are brilliant Black women THE LAST WORD

By Dr.Julianne Malveaux I was frightened of monsters when I was a child. Not so sure why, but my brother, who loved to plague me, used to tell me they were lurking under my bed. I shook, and I shivered, and I cried for fear that one of those dreaded monsters would rise from under the bed to strangle me. I don’t know what got me over my fear of monsters. Perhaps I realized that my brother got perverse pleasure by mocking me. In any case, one day, he told me that there was a monster under my bed, and I laughed in his face. And the monster myth lost its hold on me. I got over my fear of monsters, but Donald John Trump is holding on to his fear of his. His demons are brilliant Black women, like Congresswomen Maxine Waters and Fredericka Wilson. He ridicules anyone who opposes him, but he saves his tartest barbs for Black women. We are his monsters, the folks lurking under his bed, inside his consciousness, willing to call him out. According to one dictionary definition, monsters are “a type of grotesque creature, whose appearance frightens and whose powers of destruction threaten the human world’s social or moral order. A monster can also be like a human, but in folklore, they are commonly portrayed as the lowest class, as mutants, deformed, supernatural, and otherworldly.”

Monsters, threatening the white male social order. Monsters like Democratic Vice Presidential nominee, Senator Kamala Harris. I wrap myself in the epithet of monster. Like Harris, I am an otherworldly woman who isn’t supposed to be a Black woman economist. I live to destroy the white male social order; I reject the notion that I am the “lowest social class” or “deformed.” And I embrace the idea of being supernatural and otherworldly. With the roll of my neck, the cut of my eyes, the arch of my brows, I can turn an ignorant white man into New Orleans blanc mélange, just like Senator Harris did a bland Mike Pence when they “debated.”

No wonder the best the Orange Man could come up with was to describe our precious California Senator as a “monster.” No wonder that the best he could do was to describe her as frightening. In so describing her, he revealed his own fright, his fright of a woman so capable, so marvelous that he cowers in the wake of her brilliance. He cringes, and his Vice President appears more afraid, so much so that he is too intimidated to allow her to finish a sentence, interrupting her twice as often as she interrupted him. He earned her admonishment, “I am speaking,” and ignored the

rules he had agreed to. But the marginally elected President and his clone, who only differs from him because he went to both church and charm school, have no regard for rules or decency. I was angry that the Orange Man described Senator Harris as a “monster” until a friend reminded me that monsters are frightening. And Donald John Trump is not afraid, not scared, but skered! He is not only skered of losing face and losing the election, but he is also skered of the blue wave of Black women gunning for him, along with the White women who are sick of his dismissiveness. He is skered of suburban women, regardless of race, who have had it with the ignorance that has decimated their families. 211,000 dead at this writing, while he rallies, joyrides, and ignores medical advice. If he ain’t skered, then he ought to be. He is so skered (yes, I spelled it wrong, just so you could pronounce it wrong, with a little bit of flava) that he projected his greatest fear on Senator Kamala Harris by describing her as a “monster.” Yes, she is – otherworldly, supernatural, disruptive to the white male order of being. She is the future. He is the past, and his followers cling to his fading past where anybody but white men were invisible. The Secrets that We Keep FAITHFUL UTTERANCES

By Dr. Froswa Booker-Drew This last month has been an interesting and yet, painful month to witness. First, the Dallas Morning News article sharing the story of the women who attended IBOC Church accusing the pastor of inappropriate behavior when they were girls. After reading the article, I wrote the following on my Facebook page, “You can make your own decisions on this article but at the core of the matter, The Black Church as an institution has an issue with addressing misogyny and sexual abuse. It is so easy to condemn Priests for their behavior or Boy Scout leaders but until we also examine this Pathology in our community, more lives will be impacted. I wrote an article years ago about my own experience at the hands of a Pastor and praise God I got away, but the psychological damage was real. I didn’t stop believing in God or in the power of the church, but I will always speak truth. It is an abuse of power and position using authority as a tool for oppression. This must stop. The secrets must stop and protecting predators must stop.” So many women have these experiences. The Black Church has traditionally turned its head despite rumors and the cries for help. We often blame the women which continues to create an environment that excuses bad behavior. On top of that, the Breonna Taylor verdict was announced. The men who shot into her apartment were not held responsible for her death and the attorney general, a Black man, brought charges against only one of the officers and that didn’t even address the disregard for her life. Once again, I felt hurt and wounded for my sisters. In addition to the amount of time it took for the case to be acknowledged, we did not receive justice for her death. I was in a conversation earlier this week with two Black men I respect tremendously and the comment was made about the lack of support Black

women receive by Black men, even activist circles. Black women are not given the credit for the work they do and are carrying a lot of the load. This is not just applicable to the justice arena but to so many areas including the church. We show up, do the work and are often abused sometimes by our very own. There is a book that is not in the Protestant Bible but can be found in the Catholic Bible that speaks to this situation we face. In the book of Susanna (sometimes called the Judgment of Daniel) which is not canonized, tells the story of Susanna who was accosted by religious elders to have sex and threatened that if she told about it, they would accuse her of cheating on her husband. She denied the accusation and was sentenced to death. Daniel was led by God to question the accusers individually and found that they had lied. They were then put to death. Chapter 1, v. 62 states, “And according to the law of Moses they did unto them in such sort as they maliciously intended to do to their neighbour: and they put them to death. Thus the innocent blood was saved the same day. 63 Therefore Chelcias and his wife praised God for their daughter Susanna, with Joacim her husband, and all the kindred, because there was no dishonesty found in her.” My goal is not to focus on the specific situation or a particular accusation. It’s bigger than that. It is acknowledging this dark secret that plagues our community and has generational impact. Know that women have been violated for centuries—it has to stop. Many women have told the truth and have been called liars. We are all important and as members of the community (and neighbors, sisters, daughters, aunts, nieces, and friends) deserve respect, compassion, care and protection. We need our men and the institutions that we support to step up and stand with us. As in Susanna, innocent blood must be saved. By Vincent L. Hall It’s been a lousy week for Black male pride. Hopefully, the sisters will pull us through because the brothers are looking suspect. We are in the battle of a lifetime, and the brothers are acting strange. Where is our courage? Political commercials are blaring on every medium. Whether you are listening to the radio, watching local TV, or on the national broadcast rail, the number and rapidity of messages are just getting more and more confounding. I almost hopped out of my skin when I saw the large contingent of Black female Mayors of major U.S cities endorsing Biden and Harris. It was so refreshing to see the same women who have been degraded and demeaned by Donald Trump take an active role in delivering his demise! However, that encouragement was shortlived. The next ad was a much smaller group of their Black male counterparts. Mayor Eric Johnson of Dallas was not there. I was pissed that Johnson was omitted, then I remembered the September article in the Dallas Morning News. “But Johnson has explained his view that, “it’s important that we keep nonpartisan offices nonpartisan,” saying earlier this year that not participating in the election cycle, “in terms of an endorsement, I feel like that’s good for Dallas.” What the hell is nonpartisan in a war like this one? What kind of bullshit was that?

I get the cringes every time I hear a John Cornyn ad. But the latest one on Black radio featured Senator Royce West’s damning words against MJ Hegar. How does someone who has been a team player for the Democratic Party for 35 years suddenly decide to go rogue? Just Dumb shit! Later still, I’m on CNN, watching Ice Cube, for whom I have an immense amount of admiration. Cube walked-back the idea that he was supporting Trump. But he should’ve never said it in the first place. We have heard of “opportunity zones and platinum plans,” under different names. Nothing new. It just means that rich

Bill and the prison industrial complex. We listen to Trump’s simplistic salvos, blaming the Democratic Party as the culprit. Many of our family members who went to prison never got a fair share because most of us refuse to sit on a jury. We have subrogated our rights as citizens on the local level for more than 60 years. We haven’t been to school board meetings en masse since Brown v. Board. We failed them in the courtroom and the boardroom. The Democrats didn’t pick your Black candidates; you did! We keep choosing on congeniality rather than

White folks will take every opportunity they can in newly gentrified areas and go platinum financially. The weeks-old news that one of every four Black male college students was voting for Trump still weighed me down. Our inability to teach Black history to three generations of our children is coming back to haunt us. Kanye has mother issues; I can’t tell you what this Black student/Trump fan phenomenon is. We want to wallpaper the world with the 1994 Crime

conscious. We abandoned “movement and grassroots leaders” for sexy speakers. And all we’ve got is talk. Man, it’s been a horrible week for Black male pride. Or at least for this Black male. What happened to our communal courage? Sisters, you got to turn this thing around. We only got a week, and too many of our brothers have abandoned ship. Vincent L. Former athlete helps others focus on building a successful life By Allana J. Barefield Growing up in Louisiana, Reggie Calhoun, Jr., like many young boys, had aspirations of playing professional sports. He played football at Louisiana College, where he was a four-year letterman, and graduated in 2012 with a degree in Health Wellness and Fitness. Unfortunately, a pro-career was not in his future, but he was still prepared for success as he joined the U.S. Army, where he served for a decade in the Army National Guard and Army Reserve. Calhoun said he came to the D/FW Metroplex on a mission and today at 32, he is using his platform to help others understand that playing sports ends one day so their academic goals should also be a priority. In 2017, the New Orleans native and graduate of Slidell High School started RPA College Prep, an accredited school where sports are competitive on a junior college level as students prepare to transfer to four-year colleges. “I wanted to deliver something that every high school graduate needs,” Calhoun said. “I wanted to prepare them for the next 40 years.” In order to do this, he created a program that provided one-

on-one training, life skills, understanding the recruiting process, top-rated competition and specialized skills-showcases. He also focused on stretching “the intellectual growth in a curricular and co-curricular environment,” while helping his charges to understand the sometimes harsh realities of the industry and the world. Acknowleging that he didn’t get the call to join a professional team, he said, “It is not just my passion but it is my duty to make sure I educate and expose them to the realities, and unfiltered truths of the situation.” And that’s just what he did with 19-year-old Tardale Williams. Like Calhoun, Williams aspires to one day play professional football. It’s a dream he has had for quite some time and with the help of his mentor, he believes the dream is not an impossible one. path they choose. He’s giving them hope and Williams found out about RPA on social media and began attending in 2019. He later caught the attention of several college football programs and decided to sign with Texas College where he began classes this Fall semester, studying kinesiology and business management. “I’m a small dude, only 5-foot4, and never thought I was that good to be playing football,” Williams said, adding that he and Calhoun worked closely over the past year and created a strong bond where Williams can pick up the phone at any time to ask for advice. “I was down for the ride, he showed me the way.” Calhoun, who served in the Army National Guard and Army Reserve, advised Williams through his college selection process, stressing the need to find a school that caters to his needs and not just athletics. According to Williams, Calhoun continued to remind him that if sports are no longer in the picture, then he needs to be in love with his major. He also encouraged him to keep working and believing in his dreams, because “nothing is too big.” And some might say, with the COVID-19 pandemic, and many college programs opting out of the 2020 season, here’s a clear indication where pivoting is necessary. Some might say that the messages and affirmations that Calhoun shares with young men and women, are similar to the ones that helped him to become successful in life. He also may have seen himself in young Wil-

liams — a young man who deserved a chance. Calhoun said, just like Williams, he had the same goal to play in the NFL; but it wasn’t in the cards and so his focus changed and the dream became bigger for him. One of Calhoun’s first RPA students was Eryon Jefferson, now the school’s media director. When Jefferson first met Calhoun he said he noticed that the motivational speaker wasn’t a typical coach who only cared about how well he played. “He really takes his time and wants the youth to do better and get them back on the path,” Jefferson said, adding that he is proud to see how much RPA has grown through the three years since it’s been in existence and where it’s heading. The program was created from scratch and didn’t have a lot of students enrolled or other employees. “He had the drive to keep pushing in the beginning,” Jefferson said. “It was just him; just him. He was the coach, he was the athletic director, the manager and recruiter. RPA is needed in society because there’s so many kids out there who need a second chance. RPA will be able to fill a gap.” And that gap is felt in the lives of young girls, too. Through Calhoun’s experiences, he said he noticed that women in sports don’t always get opportunities so he made it part of RPA’s mission to include women athletes. “I feel like women, especially young women need that direction, that guidance, the same way as a young man needs,” Calhoun said. “They should get the same credit, the same recognition that guys do.” Calhoun also makes an effort to not only have diversity among his athletes but also his staff. Dr. Alison Ezell, was a gymnast at Southeast Missouri State University in Missouri and now is a chiropractor. Ezell works at RPA and has seen the amount of support that Calhoun gives, especially to women. “It shows the kind of person that he is, it’s not about being a man,” she said. “He literally wants to impact everybodywoman, child, mother, father;

no matter the race.” In addition to motivating students in the classroom and on the field, Calhoun is also spreading his message to a wider audience. In April he wrote and self-published a book, “Build Your Sportsprenuership Empire the RPA Way,” where he discusses sports and entrepreneurship. By sharing his testimony, Calhoun has been an encouragement to others like Joe Dempsey, who is the athletic director and vice president of RPA. After reading Calhoun’s book, he said he was inspired by Calhoun to write his own book, “Living Your Best Life, Eight Steps To Success.” “Seeing the words in his book is a life that I lived,” Dempsey said. “It was inspirational for me to be able to see his story being told and knowing it will help someone else.” Dempsey’s biggest takeaway after reading Calhoun’s book is that sports and life intersect. “Everyone wants to win, it’s all a game, if you understand how to play and the rules,” he said. The entrepreneurship skills shared in Calhoun’s book also resonated with his cousin Brandon Diggins, who lives in New Orleans. Diggins started two businesses, Christ Creation Process and Christ Creation Kitchen; both involving personal training and meal prepping for his clients. “Before I read his book, I was making probably $200 a month… and now I’m making between $7,000 to $8,000 a month through his help and mentorship,” Diggins said. “He’s opening a lot of doors for a lot of people, and he’s setting the standard.” Calhoun, who is also the CEO of The Rezolution Conglomerate, LLC, continues to lead the way and show young athletes that there is so much more to life than sports. He says he was once that kid waiting to hear his name to be drafted but he decided that his dream could evolve into so much more for so many who look like him. “As a kid I always wanted to be a hero, not like Batman or Superman; just someone who can show up and save the day,” the motivational speaker recalled.

In a Texas Metro News interview, Dr. Patterson, herself the daughter of a policeman and school teacher, said the piece began to form in her head and heart after one of her two adult sons told her about a recent incident where he was called the N-word as a car drove past her own home in Dallas. Don’t intimidate voters - Big Mama said, “Honor your elders to make your days long” BLACK CARD

By Terry Allen I still pay tribute to my Grandmother, lovingly known as BIG Mama. I became an election judge and she quoted scripture, “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. Exodus 20:12. There is so much talk about voter intimidation and I am concerned that we do not allow others to intimidate voters, young and old, especially our elders who stand in harm’s way to vote. I told Big Mama I was going to be an election judge and I was concerned about protecting the voters. She told me to read Exodus 20:12 first. It empowered me.

Here is my God -protected election judge story. My proudest moment as election judge at the polls was when a 91-year-old White female, very tired, walked into the election poll exhausted and out of breath, to vote. She said she had voted for 65 years and she had to walk four blocks to the school. She said her son picks her up to vote but he had to vote somewhere else. “We had been voting together for many years,” she exclaimed. She decided she would walk! When she arrived, she said “those four blocks are longer at 91 years old than ever before.” I helped her walk to her voting booth, but she said she was very tired and could not see the ballot. I arranged for two workers to help her - One Republican election clerk and One Democrat election clerk. She asked to be shown her chosen candidates. She cast her votes.

She said, “I am tired now.” A tear fell down the side of my face and I asked her if she would sit down with me until I could find her a ride. She then told me about her children who attended this school, her 40 years of PTA here and her excitement about the graduations. Shortly thereafter some of the students (100% Hispanic) at the school walked in and began to ask us questions of voting. She enjoyed them! For twenty minutes, none of us saw any color! Here we were this 91-year-old White female talking to this Black election judge, laughing with the Hispanic kids. The moment was color brave, age respectful and issue free! I walked down the hall and asked the school if “we” could find her a ride. I silently thanked God for that moment and asked God to please get her a ride home. I kneeled down beside her and said, “Thanks for voting and waiting.

Your ride home will be here shortly.” I really did not know if I could get her a ride, but I had asked God. Three minutes later a very professionally dressed young Asian man walked in to vote and called her name. “What are you doing here? How are you?” He lived next door to her, and she recognized him. He said he would give her a ride. Those intimidation-free moments reflected the America we are! Big Mama then read this at the end of my report.” God your Lord you shall respect; Him you shall serve’ (Deuteronomy 10:20). He will deliver. The Trial of the Chicago 7 THE TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO 7 is a look back at a shameful episode in American history that is currently showing on NETFLIX. I don’t think it’s coincidental the NETFLIX and writer/ director Aaron Sorkin, who wrote the screenplays for MOLLY’S GAME, THE SOCIAL NETWORK and A FEW GOOD MEN, would release the movie at such a historic time in presidential politics. The film shows how little progress has been made and the corruption that still exists with corrupt politicians since the ‘68 Democratic convention until today. The movie shows the turbulent times of the 60s and the public’s opposition to the Vietnam war. The Chicago 7 consists of leaders of several different militant groups including Tom Hayden, who was later elected to the California Senate played by Eddie Redmayne, Abbie Hoffman, portrayed by Sacha Baron Cohen, and Black Panther leader Bobby Seale, played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Their prosecution was a plot of newly-elected President Richard Nixon to show protesters what would happen to people who would oppose the war. The trail itself was an absolute scam of criminal justice with a judge, played by Frank Langella who was teetering between being corrupt and being senile. Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays the federal prosecutor who follows his marching orders from the U.S. Attorney General but it’s obvious that he sees the unfair trial going down in front of his eyes. The different members of The Chicago 7 all have different philosophies of how to protest the war but they all have to come together to defend themselves against the unjust charges. The movie is a real teeth gnasher as we see the unfairness of the judge affecting everything the Chicago 7 try to do to defend themselves. THE TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO 7 is a good reminder of how a corrupt government can affect the lives of its citizens. I highly recommend you find the time to watch it. The movie is rated R with a run time of 2 hours and 9 minutes. On my “Hollywood Popcorn Scale” I rate THE TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO 7 a JUMBO.
