JACKSON, MISS.--About 83 percent of the residents of Jack son, Miss. are Black. As the overwhelming flooding is destroying the residents' prop erties and lives due to the torren tial rains overflowing the Pearl River, backing up the OB Curtis treatment plant, thousands are still without safe water. Whether it's the low water pressure or the boil-water order, the wretched, rusted water pipes underneath Jackson' soil and foundation can no longer be ig nored.Theproblem has been covered with weak band aids throughout the decades, as money allocated for water infrastructure in Jack son seems to disappear or get misappropriated.Manypeoplecontinue to in quire about how the water woes of Jackson, Miss.'s have gotten so deep; the continual flooding matters have a troubled history. Although the city council of Jackson, Miss. has had over 4 de cades of issues concerning their water treatment facility, lines, and infrastructure and quality water-report issues, the Mis sissippi Free Press and Jackson Free Press organizations both Last year when I attended the inaugural Arlington Showdown, where the Southern Jaguars and the Texas Southern Tigers took to the Gridiron, I talked about the importance of supporting HBCUS. I just love it when I see folks out supporting HBCUs because I love all HBCUs. I also told you to get ready to support the Classic games in 2023.
Southwestern Athletic Con ference (SWAC) powerhouse Jackson State University's Coach Deion Sanders kicked off his second season against SWAC neophyte, Florida A&M University (FAMU), for Denny's Orange Blossom Classic at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami this past Sunday, with an impressive and for some astonishing re cord-breaking win, 59-3. Of note is the impressive dis play by Sanders’ son, Shedeur, who broke his own personal record for completed passes, before a crowd of just under 40,000.Itwas a weekend that Florida HBCU fans most likely would not like to remember as Uni versity of Miami defeated an other SWAC newbie, Bethune Cookman University, 70-13 and

BCL of Texas Launches Dallas Small Business Diversity Fund with $1 Million Investment from Comerica Bank
What Lucille "Big Mama" Allen knew for sure, that we are created to serve God by loving and serv ing one another. “Big Mama” gave us all permanent lessons that were her authentic gifts asking us to rise up and do the work. She was a child of the Jim Crow, lynching and Separate but Equal eras that permeated her sense of self. She came after the recon struction that her Mother Mary told her about. In every front porch story, Big Mama spoke of the "time when we were liberat ed."She stated she knew of “the time when we had senators, our own 40 acres and cities of busi ness before they destroyed them and killed our purveyors.”
It is a fact that the humans that held enslaved Africans did not create or have an exit strate gy! The only group enslaved on U.S. soil was Africans. On top of the utter inhumani ty and indignity of slavery, there was enduring economic disad vantage in both obvious and sub tle ways. Wages were denied to slaves, of course. In addition, slaves were un able to save for investment. They could not accumulate capital be cause they were capital - bought, sold, traded and insured by those who enslaved them.

The "market value" of slaves in 1840 was double that of the en tire railroad system, which was considered the country's most valuable asset. The Second Re construction is marked by the civil rights movement, African Americans fought for basic civil rights and civil liberties protect ed by the Constitution for the “Okie Doke” folks. The changes included equal access to public facilities, housing, education and as Big Mama said, “good govern ment jobs.” Yet the third reconstruction is about taking direct action for change and will include our voic es, job origination and building economic wealth but for this to happen we will need to rise up in action.BigMama told us, time and time again to be ready because when the time arises that we get another reconstruction, we have to be ready to bless every soul forward. She created a sense of urgency and action in me that I have not been able to shake! Real hospitality is not about what we do – it is about who we are. But the “peculiar institu tion” spread its suppressing web throughout the American South, gaining momentum with the rise of the cotton economy and only being abruptly stalled with the Civil War and the 13th Amend ment to the Constitution one to two lifetimes ago to “reconstruct” ourButlives.the Reconstruction had a lasting impact on the American tapestry. It was turbulent! It was a strategy to reintegrate rebellious states back into union without the free labor component that the “peculiar institution” thrived on. Just recently I received my ju ror notice, I love serving, but this juror screening opened the door to prove we needed a third re construction. So after 1) a dead ly pandemic wreaking havoc on my own family and 2) after the economic collapse kindred to the Great Depression and 3) a racial awakening showcasing existing racial injustices, I received a “re quested order’ to be a juror. I was excited, but not for long. I arrived in a room of hundreds and hundreds of citizens un masked, no social distancing and no ‘flatten the curve directives at all. Yet nothing illegal because the governor’s policy allowed all this to happen. I stood near the bathroom yet some BIPOC gatekeeper told me if I don’t take a seat she would have the Marshall escort me out of here. I asked her about how we ensure those who tested positive? She smirked and sarcastical ly said, “use common sense and leave.” She took no consideration given that my leaving could result in a warrant for my arrest as a noshow.Ipolitely told her as I matched her eye-to-eye sneer with a re quest to bring two marshals back -- one to make me sit down and another to pull me off anyone who touched me to force me to sit down without the ability to social distance.Icanhear Big Mama saying, “don’t come for me, unless I send for you." (See that column on our website)Webantered back and forth on many issues, yet she remind ed me of the first reconstruction gatekeeper, those of us who look like us designed to “oversee” our systemic failures. Big Mama was right, we had to sit and wait to arise up to bless forward.Check back next week when you see what happened when we arrived in the courtroom to be directly selected as jurors! In the meantime, do as Big Mama say, “Bless forward with urgency and action!”Have you been called to jury duty? Email me at the paper ter ryallenpr@gmail.com

The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) has announced its honorees for the 2022 Hall of Fame Induction and Special Honors Awards. The awards were made during the #NABJNAHJ22 Convention & Career Fair in Las Vegas. Among the names was one that you and I both surely know by now. They said Cheryl Smith, but I wasn't sure. In the video, two young hosts introduced a sweet little old lady from East Or ange, New Jersey, named Cheryl Smith.Inhonesty, Cheryl Smith is a giant in the national Black press. Not just in NABJ but among NNPA publishers and Black newspapers around the country. They gave her many accolades relative to her journalistic prow ess but let me tell you about the Cheryl Smith I know. The Cheryl Smith I know raised four of her sisters’ chil dren with all the love any child could stand while she danced backwards in heels in her pro fessional life. She epitomized the Black mother who knows how to brace her knee against the altar while she keeps her foot on your neck. Ain’t nothing better than a Black mother who can pray for you and discipline you simulta neously.Andre, the oldest and only male child, is in his 18th year of military ser vice because character and accountability were something he learned at home. The duo who intro duced Cheryl knew her NABJ stories but didn't know half of her whole story. She is a stalwart and advocate for “Buy ing Black.” Her closing statement hinted at it. “The last time I checked, all ice is 32 de grees Fahrenheit.” Let me translate that. What Cheryl was saying is don't be lieve the hype. The white man's ice is no colder than any other. But, sadly, too many of us won't do business with people who look like us. Texas Metro News can publish it, but some of us won't believe it until the Dal las Morning News confirms it in print.Incidentally, “Don’t Believe the Hype'' is the name of her 25-year-old Bowl-a-Thon that has raised more than a quarter million dollars. Scholarships that encourage and benefit journal ism as a career. The Cheryl Smith I know is a mentor at the highest level. Dallas Black journalism’s Grand Poohbah is Norma Adams Wade. However, Cheryl has adopted, trained, hazed, touched, or oth erwise grown hundreds of bud ding print and video journalists. She stated her beliefs in the acceptance speech. "The mark of a true leader is the ability to recognize, cultivate, uplift, and encourage others." Cheryl Lynn Smith bears that mark! She did it at Paul Quinn, and Dallas Col lege. She teaches in class or in the moment. The Cheryl I know is a Warrior and shouted this out during her ac ceptance speech. Led by Commissioner John Wi ley Price, Cheryl was an original Warrior who was as good at fist-fighting as she was at making picket signs. The Cheryl Smith I know stalked and printed the witness sketch of a se rial rapist for seven years until he was captured, jailed, and convicted. The Cheryl Smith I revere is never satisfied. She was pleased that my two oldest daughters matriculated at her beloved Flor ida A&M University. But I got a call questioning why daughter number three didn't choose Tallahassee. Cheryl Smith was HBCU when HBCU wasn’t as cool as it is now! Cheryl Smith paid homage to the literary heroes she read av idly during her remarks. Maya Angelou, Nikki Giovanni, and Iceberg Slim. She honored her friends who are now with her ancestors, like Dick Gregory, publisher George Curry, and a local favorite, Lawrence Young. Finally, she mentioned the man in her corner, Stewart Curet. She is sweet about him! Cheryl Smith is an award-win ning writer, publisher, radio host, professor, mother, and more. She knows, as Jesse Jackson once said, "how to be pro-Black with out being anti-white." That's how she has been able to parlay her work and newspapers with the Dallas Morning News to create an informative collaborative. The real Cheryl Smith came out when I tried to retire a few months ago. She only knows two curse words, and when I answered the phone, she used them both. “Negro, have you lost your mind? You betta get yo……” That's the Cheryl Smith I know and love. She entered my Hall of Fame years ago! I love her and Black journalists love her too.

But be not mistaken, the Democratic Party, while it has worked long and hard to restore and protect the kind of gains we have seen under President Biden, still have not done as much as it could for the people who put him in office. Without the Black vote, there would be no President Joe Biden. Yet he did not move to sign Executive Orders to fight Voter Suppres sion as he did with great speed to help overcome or provide protections available to him af ter the Supreme Court’s decision in Roe vs.Wade.
er parties that many of you have heard of, such as Libertarian. We have focused on the Re publican Party as a threat to Democracy because of their national efforts to impose voter suppression in states where they have intentionally made it more difficult to vote. The Republican Party has systematically redrawn election districts so as to weaken or neutralize the Black vote with the intention of limiting Black folks and other people of color from gaining political office. Those who are in office make policy, as we have seen with the removal of ballot boxes, the elimination of Voting Precincts so as to make lines longer and to create more difficulty for voters, the passing of laws pro hibiting giving people in voting lines food or water while they wait to vote, and in some places the elimination of Sunday vot ing. The Republicans, under the leadership of Senator Mitch Mc Connell, has voted against every bill passed by the House of Rep resentatives to bring relief to the American people in such areas as reducing the cost of prescrip tion draws, restoring the Voting Rights Act provisions struck down by the Supreme Court in 2013, and the restoration of the protections lost under the recent Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court Decision on Abortion Rights.
Former President Trump and those who rally around him have become the party of those who would reduce or eliminate rights that so many have fought and died for.

It appears that our recent dis cussions about the importance of each of us becoming Regis tered Voters and using our right to vote has been taken by some as an endorsement of a political party preference, as a necessity to voting. For the record, there is no constitutional requirement of a political party affiliation as a condition of voting. One only has to declare a party affiliation in states requiring such affili ation for voting Democratic or Republican in primary races.

When Black businesses had dif ficulty qualifying for PPP loans because of the paperwork load, I didn't hear Republicans sug gesting that less-advantaged companies were subsidizing, through their taxes, better-ad vantaged businesses. Some multi-million dollar franchises seeking relief were shamed into turning their loan money back. The equity argu ment is nonsensical and decep tive, and for the record, most of the loan forgiveness goes to people who earn less than $75,000 a year. Thank you, President Biden, for this drop in the bucket. May you be inspired to do more, in cluding examining higher ed ucation financing. What would it take to make undergraduate education free for everyone?
President Joe Biden made a campaign promise to alleviate some student loan debt, and on August 24, he honored his com mitment. Some say it is too lit tle. Obstructionists say it is too much. Some economists say it may be inflationary, and loan defaulters like Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Green, who de faulted on a federal loan of her own, say it is "not fair" that some taxpayers should subsidize oth ers.Isay that student loan forgive ness is a step in the right direc tion. It is a drop in the bucket, to be sure, but it is a critical drop that makes way for a more in sightful analysis of the cost of attendance and how people pay for higher education. The headlines have focused that everyone with federal stu dent loan debt will get $10,000 of forgiveness for that debt. Those with Pell grants and stu dent loans will get $20,000 in debt forgiveness. Any amount of loan forgiveness is a good thing, but for those who carry six figures worth of debt, it's just a drop in the bucket. When I was President of Ben nett College, I'd often look at the debt that some of my grad uates were carrying, sometimes as much as $50,000 or $60,000. Why? They may have had some grants but had to take out loans to cover their cost of attendance. Most colleges use the interest on their endowment to provide scholarships. Many HBCUs with small endowments have less grant money to offer than richly endowed colleges. Before the pandemic, stu dent loan repayments began six months after graduation. After six months, interest begin accruing. Students who did not find jobs still had hundreds of dollars of loans to repay, regard less of their employment status. Because interest continued to accrue, some students owed more three years after gradu ation than they did when they graduated.Nearlyhalf of all Black col lege graduates owe 12.5 percent more than they did when they graduated, mainly because of accrued interest. In contrast, 83 percent of white students owe less. What's the differ ence? Family assistance. Black families have just a tenth of the wealth of white families. While the loan forgiveness amounts are being trumpet ed, I think the more significant part of President Biden's an nouncement is the change in repayment terms and structure. Currently, loan repayments are capped at 10 percent of gross in come, with forgiveness happen ing after ten years. The new terms cap repayments at 5 percent with forgiveness af ter ten years. These new terms provide income flexibility for millions of borrowers who post pone adult decisions because of the heavy burden of student loan debt. Some defer marriage and childbearing, new home and furniture purchases, and even aspects of career advancement because of their student loans. Consider a graduate with a passion for education. She is agile in mathematics and would be a great math teacher. She could also go into some aspect of the finance industry as a bank, broker, or portfolio man ager and earn twice what she'd make as a teacher. With student loans crushing her, she might pragmatically choose finance instead of teaching. With a little help, she might follow her first love and go to the classroom. She might be forced to choose a lucrative but unfulfilling career with student loan shackles. Too many have raised a "fair ness" and "equity" argument to oppose Biden's plan. It's a done deal, y'all, and President Biden needs to do more. Let's pause and applaud the Biden-Harris administration for this step in the right direction. And let's ask those attempting to incite class warfare about the roots of their objection.FewRepublicans opposed the 45th President's tax cuts. In stead, they applauded them. The rest of us paid for them. I didn't hear the MAGA right lamenting that most of us were paying for tax breaks for just a few of us.
There are many disparities that need our voice AND our vote. Matthew 22:20-22 states, “They say unto him, Caesar's. Then saith he unto them, Ren der therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's.”Intheory, this is what we should do but what happens when Caesar (the govern ment) is doing something that goes against what one believes is correct? There are times throughout history that indi viduals or groups have stood up for their rights that were being violated.Forexample, women at one time did not have the right to vote. Black people were en slaved against their will and freedom did not include equal ity or equity. Laws have been discriminatory or were created to protect the vulnerable. There are times that we can’t sit by silently when others are violated. According to the Tex as Tribune, “Texas has spent more than $12 million sending busloads of migrants to East Coast cities, according to the Texas Division of Emergency Management…. the Governor of Texas’ office announced that it had begun busing mi grants to Chicago. Documents from the emergency manage ment department show that the state has already paid a to tal of $12,707,720.92 to Wynne Transportation…from Texas border communities to Wash ington, D.C., and New York City…”Yet, residents of Texas suf fered the loss of electricity during a winter storm across the state due to the electric grid’s instability in February 2021. Funding that could be used to repair the grid, focus on in frastructure, and so many other issues is being wasted. It's interesting to watch how so many Christians will po liticize issues without using scriptures as a basis for why we do what we do. Another friend who is no longer a Christian told me some years ago that our problem is that we are buffet Christians. We pick and choose what works for us. We seek for giveness when we mess up but when it comes to others, we seek the highest punishment and condemn because it’s not ourScriptureissue. commands us to treat people with care: “The alien who resides with you shall be to you as the citizen among you; you shall love the alien as yourself, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.” (Leviticus 19:34) “Cursed is anyone who with holds justice from the foreign er, the fatherless or the widow.’ Then all the people shall say, ‘Amen!’” (Deuteronomy 27:19) This week has illuminated the issues that we have as a country with those in positions of pow er, acting on behalf of the gov ernment. Recently, a Black pas tor in Alabama was arrested for watering flowers for his neigh bors who were out of town.
UTTERANCESFAITHFULByDr.Froswa'Booker-Drew
Officers continued to say that he did not identify himself al though bodycam video shows that he shared his name. There are numerous examples of many unarmed Black men and women, not breaking the law, whose inter actions with the police resulted in bodily harm and even death.
Time Magazine said, “Some researchers and columnists point to “white flight” for Jack son’s failing infrastructure and a subsequent lack of taxes and state funding that instead poured into developing neigh boring predominantly white cit ies such as Flowood and Madi son. More than 82% of Jackson’s population is Black and almost a quarter of residents live below the poverty line, a stark contrast to 1980 when over half of the city’s population was white.” So many of the issues we face at the core involve dignity and how we see others. If we are not living out what we espouse as Christians, we are hypocrites: “If anyone says, "I love God," yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen. And he has given us this command: Whoever loves God must also love his brother.” (1 John 4:20)

There once was a tree in a beautiful park. The tree was known for its caring nature and I dubbed it the “giving tree.” The tree was a popular attraction and had many friends that would ask for its fruits. Overtime, the tree began to grow old. It stopped producing fruit and wilted. When the tree could give no more, its friends left. The tree became lonely, alone for the rest of its life.

One thing about me is that I have a lot of interests such as poetry to public speaking; however, what I love most in the world is helping others. The feeling I get when I know I caused someone to smile is priceless. When you help others, you give them a part of Iyourself.prioritize helping others more than anything else. It's important to seek a professional rather than self diagnosing. According to Highland Springs Speciality Clinics, self diagnosing is the process of identifying a medical condition in yourself. Self diagnosis can be dangerous as it can cause you to identify the incorrect illness. For example, a headache is a general symptom ranging from the possibilities of a brain tumor to dehydration. It’s important to seek help if you suffer from anxiety. Not only can it provide comfort, but if left untreated anxiety disorders can have severe consequences. There are many ways in which anxiety can be treated, whether it be therapy or medication.

I began to care, to truly love the person in the mirror. I used to hate myself and wish I was someone else. I tied my self worth to other people and what they thought of me.
I felt as if I was not useful then I was not wanted. I chose to start a friendship with myself. I made more time to be alone and to do what I love. I would start off the day with reminding myself of my own worth. I had conversations with myself whenever I faced a problem in order to do what would make me happiest.Igained a support system, a new outlook on life and an ability to make many more accomplishments. But, what I truly found was my best friend. Becoming your own friend is the best thing you can do for yourself.

From 2013 to 2015, a wild se ries of unfortunate events took place on the Jackson City Coun cil, from employee who would find a water meter calibrated to read gallons instead of cubic feet, which could make a water bill more than six times larger than it should be. After that discovery, a city offi cial halted all new meter instal lationsHowever, this halting of all operations in 2015 would not fix Jackson's dilemma with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) cited violations; on Nov. 21, 2012, EPA, the U.S. Department of Justice, and the Mississippi Department of En vironmental Quality (MDEQ) cited Jackson for violating the Clean Water Act. Between 2010 and 2012 alone, Jackson dumped 2.8 billion gal lons of barely treated sewage into the Pearl River, the EPA found. The EPA consent decree also charges Jackson for unau thorized bypasses of treatment at the Savanna Street Wastewater Treatment Plant, the city's larg est wastewater treatment facility. Under the terms of the Sie mens contract, $26 million was earmarked for consent-decree compliance, including upgrades to the wastewater plants-of course this never hap pened; the contracted company never complet ed the proposed work tasks.In2017, Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba became the 53rd mayor of Jackson; members of the city coun cil had already lost trust in Siemens Industry Inc., fulfilling the proposed contract they had already been paid millions of dol lars to complete. In total, the city of Jackson has lost rough ly $175M and it will still take another $75M to repair the disastrousLumumba, project.aformer lawyer, made sure the lawsuit was pur sued against Siemens Industry Inc., originally suing for $225M, doubling to $450M. The final outcome of the win ning lawsuit through a settlement would reward the city of Jackson almost $90M, although they lost so much more money from the start of the project in 2012. Meanwhile by 2022, more winter freezes and heavy down pours caused more pipes to burst and more flooding. Even with the recent win of the lawsuit, the city's water in frastructure is obviously still a disaster; at least there is a better understanding of why.
