Chesapeake Receipts by Joe Evans
T
he immediacy of parenthood certainly changes one’s sense of space, time and purpose. Until that day in 1998 when my daughter was born, we lived for the moment—chasing adventure, the nearest party, and gaining whatever we could to fund the escapades. The pensive ride home from the hospital began the process of fathoming how this new situation would fit into a productive future. Suddenly, we were thinking in terms of legacy, with concerns and blind confidence that we would carry this commitment through to maturity, and we realized that she would inherit the effects and the mess we would leave behind. This returned to mind with the passing of former Maryland Governor Harry Hughes, who stepped up in 1983 to forge the first Chesapeake Bay Agreement, the Chesapeake Bay Program and Maryland’s Critical Area Act, essential steps that led to the earliest, large-scale Chesapeake Bay protection and restoration measures. In 1985, he backed the scientific proof of an impending collapse of the striped bass population, and he pushed through a complete moratorium on the harvest, an act that inspired death threats from some who didn’t agree with the emergency measure. It’s a reminder that, for better or worse, what we do, what we say, and what we may fail to do sticks around. As soon she fit into a child-sized life jacket, we went fishing. It’s been our father-daughter getaway for nearly two decades. It’s where we could talk about things and how we fit into the system— earth, wind, water and sky. Very quickly it seems, she was packing out to overnight environmental education trips to Tangier Island, Assateague, Wye Island, the John Smith
Trail and other cool Chesapeake places, and she returned to share ideas about what we could do to protect the Bay. Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Commerce declared the Chesapeake Bay blue crab fishery to be in a “State of Disaster,” (2008) and sent $20 million to help mitigate the impact on commercial crabbers and to develop better management, enforcement, processing tools and associated income opportunities for watermen. In 2009, Maryland responded to the oyster population collapse with an ambitious plan to expand and restore oyster sanctuaries while fostering oyster aquaculture opportunities and more effective law enforcement to stem chronic poaching. We talked about these things and what we could do to be a part of the solutions instead of part of the problems. It dawned on us that restoration work is so much more difficult and expensive than minding what you have. She asked, “What if we had just taken better care to begin with?” We learned to do the little things at home—rain barrels, native plants, reusables, cleaning-up, conserving, and becoming active in support of achieving reasonable political goals. She’s fully grown and away at school along the James River now. She’s better informed and enabled than I was at that age thanks to her teachers, classmates, and whatever we have done together to be better neighbors. As we brace ourselves for the day when she casts off, I hope that she’s headed toward better conditions than what was left for us. It’s the very least we could do. joe@chesapeakebaymagazine.com

oes a resort getaway still count as a getaway if it is less than two hours’ drive from home? Is it still a getaway if you bring your two-year-old child and five-month-old baby along? The answer to both questions is yes—if you’re getting away to the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay Golf, Resort, Spa and Marina in Cambridge. The waterfront resort is upscale and kid-friendly, stimulating and peaceful. My husband and I spent a long weekend at the Hyatt to celebrate our fifth anniversary, with our two little guys in tow. The weather was just as beautiful as the September weekend we got married—clear, blue skies, and just cool enough for comfort. ChesapeakeBayMagazine.com

Pulling up to the resort, we unloaded an embarrassing amount of luggage for a two-night stay, but the valet greeted us warmly and found us a bellhop. We stepped into the breezy lobby upon arrival and were greeted by a two-story wall of windows overlooking the Choptank River, its bridge stretching into the distance. The lobby lounge, Michener’s Library, is flanked by stone fireplaces and cozy nooks, and its doors lead to a serene outdoor lawn with rocking chairs, fountains, and a fireplace for roasting marshmallows. (If you didn’t bring your own, the resort’s “general store” offers s’more kits, with all the fixings and even a skewer). Hyatt recently spent $7 million on renovating parts of the resort, and the updates were evident inside our top-floor water-view guest suite. The décor is nautical—but subtle. Dark marine blues and brass knobs evoke maritime tradition, and if you look closely at the ceiling fan, you

will see that its blades resemble wooden oars. We’d requested a mini-crib for our baby, and it was waiting in our room upon check-in, with a neatly folded baby blanket and a hotel-sized baby shampoo and lotion set. Those small touches meant more to this exhausted mother than turn-down service with chocolates and rose petals. Staying onsite for dinner, we found the best of both worlds: grownup food and drink, with kid-friendly extras. The resort describes the Water’s Edge Grill as a “casually relaxed” American grill for families. It is a rare restaurant, indeed, where I can order an artfully arranged charcuterie plate and a glass of rosé while my toddler scribbles on a coloring-page place mat and drinks happily from a dinosaur-themed plastic straw cup. Reservations are recommended. That evening, we were surprised by a knock at our suite door—My father had arranged the delivery of flowers from a local florist and a bottle of champagne in honor of our anniversary. It was a classy move, and

we fully enjoyed our bubbly on the balcony as our little ones slept inside. Looking out over the nighttime Choptank, I watched cars’ headlights glide across the Route 50 bridge, marveling that I could see the entire bridge, but could hear no traffic noise at all. In fact, the only sound I heard was the sputter of the fountains on the lawn below us. The next day, I would overhear a staff member mention that the resort had hosted a 400-person wedding that night. I didn’t hear a peep.
We spent the next day exploring the Hyatt’s many outdoor spots. We picked up coffee and breakfast sandwiches at Bay Country Market, the resort’s lobby-level general store. From there, we walked along the crushed-shell waterfront path to the 150-slip River Marsh Marina. On the walk we encountered a buzzard, several butterflies, and a cartoonish, grumpy green heron, who hopped around trying to intimidate us on the path. The small-boat launch offers fun ways to get on the water, like jetskis and kayaks. A small beach just down the hill from the Hyatt’s two outdoor pools (where you’ll find a pool bar and water slide) was just the right size for our toddler to play in the sand and splash around. The outdoor activities don’t stop there. Beach volleyball and tennis courts sit next to the mini-golf course; it’s all free for hotel and marina guests. The indoor pool, complete with giant swan-shaped floats, was just as popular as the outdoor pools were during our stay. There’s a locker room just inside the pool facility, an up-to-date fitness center, and the Captain’s Parlor game room outfitted with foosball,

shuffleboard, and arcade games for older kids and teens. On the west end of the resort, Camp Hyatt offers children’s programs that allow parents to get away for a few hours. Our kids were still too young to attend, but they did enjoy the playground. With everybody happily occupied, I saw my chance to steal away for some me-time and inquired at the front desk about the resort’s jogging path. The concierge was able to give me a helpful route map detailing the path, which circles around the resort and past the River Marsh golf course, out to the entrance and back. After a couple of loops and a charming encounter with a doe and her fawn, I ended my run back at the playground. Our family of four meandered around the riverfront onto the lush lawn. My two-year-old pulled off his shoes and socks, leaping around on the grass. The baby had just nodded off in his stroller. n July 14th, 1813, three British ships sailed into the Yeocomico River, their sights set on the thriving port of Kinsale. They were met by the three-gun schooner Asp, captained by Boston-born midshipman James Butler Sigourney. The Asp held them off at first, but the invaders kept coming. Outnumbered and outgunned, with most of his crew dead or wounded, the young captain fought on, lashing himself to the mast before the Asp was boarded. Sigourney’s body, shot and stabbed, was cast away, and heavy smoke filled the air as his ship was burned to the water. If you think history is boring, you haven’t been to Kinsale. A major shipping center from its birth in 1706 to the end of the steamboat era, this now sleepy Virginia town is home to deep water, tranquil anchorages, and some of the nicest people you will ever meet. It is also home to stories— three hundred years’ worth—and you can hear them at the Kinsale Museum. ChesapeakeBayMagazine.com

Just a short walk up the hill from the Kinsale Harbor Marina, the museum is the realization of a dream shared by a small group of residents who banded together in 1977 to form the Kinsale Foundation. Their goal was the preservation of Kinsale’s history and its sense of community. The Museum opened in 1993, its collection formed from the memories and donations of its residents and brought to life by director Lynn Norris. “We encourage people in the community to share their personal family history through the museum,” she explains, pointing to nineteenthcentury, brown, velvet dress, which is one in a collection of clothing hand-stitched by Nannie Louise Parks Evans and recently donated by Norris’ granddaughter. “Nannie was born in Kinsale in 1868 and, as a young woman, fell in love with Captain Evans, a Smith Island waterman who was having a boat built here. He met her and he never left.” This story, like many others in the museum, reflects the town’s deep connection to the water. One wall is covered with photographs and playbills from the James Adams Floating Theatre, a 700-seat steamboat that brought performances to the town’s harbor and other sites around the Bay. It was here that novelist Edna Ferber was inspired to write the 1926 novel Show Boat which became the

inspiration for the musical Showboat. Also on display are paintings of ships laden with Virginia farming and forestry products and also exhibits celebrating the role of watermen in the life of the town. One of the most notable is a replica of the skipjack Rita Elizabeth, built by local George Lucas Perry, a labor of love that took 2,000 hours to complete. While water brought prosperity, its riverfront also made the town a target in times of war. The tale of the Asp’s captain, which James Fenimore Cooper recounted in his History of the Navy of the United States of America, is just one example of the area’s bloody history. British forces frequently pillaged the area and once burned Kinsale to the ground. The town is a stop on the StarSpangled Banner Trail, a National Historic Trail tracing more than 560
miles of land and water routes commemorating the War of 1812 in the Chesapeake Bay region. Kinsale was also the target of constant Union raids during the Civil War. Norris tells these stories, and that of the Asp, in dramatic detail. She points out that the most famous vessel with a Kinsale connection is not a sailing ship or warship—It’s a fictitious spaceship. Kinsale native Matt Jefferies, an aviation and mechanical artist, designed the original Starship U.S.S. Enterprise in 1966. “We like to say you can go anywhere from Kinsale,” she laughs. While Kinsale Museum celebrates the town’s past, it also takes an active role in the present. The Museum and Foundation partner with the Cople District Volunteer Fire Department for community events. These include
Christmas in Kinsale, which raises thousands of dollars annually for local charities, Independence Day fireworks, and Kinsale Day, a September celebration marking the village’s 1706 birthdate. Norris sees these events and the museum as forming a bridge between the past and present, integrating new families into the centuries-old Kinsale community. “We try to focus on what I sometimes call ‘future history,’” Norris explains. “That means marching forward, hand-in-hand, to keep Kinsale’s special qualities alive.” h Ann Eichenmuller is a freelance writer and the author of two nautical mystery novels. Driving Around in Circles Brian Dutton’s big wheel keeps on turning story and photo by Jay Moore
C
aptain Brian Dutton holds the reins of 1,300 horses and bends them to his bidding with the touch of his fingers. Three decks above the huge diesel engines, the port and starboard control levers emit a deceptively discreet “beep” as they slip between gears and add power. Fifty-five gross tons of steel beneath his feet yield to the skipper’s commands. “I’m just haulin’ folks across the river,” he says, smiling. “Drivin’ around in circles.” Dutton started haulin’ folks across the river as soon as he was legally eligible to test for the required Coast Guard Master’s license. It was 2005, and he had just turned nineteen. He’s considered to be the youngest person to earn the captain’s four-striped epaulette and assume such responsibility in the Norfolk-Portsmouth harbor. “I took a huge pay cut to start as a deckhand at 16,” he says. He’d been working for his roofing-contractor father at $15 an hour. It was seasonal work. The ferry offered 12-month employment, but at minimum wage. The investment paid off. Three years later Dutton had logged enough sea-service days to test for the 100-ton license, passed on his first try, and literally moved up the ladder into the third-deck wheelhouse of the 75-foot Elizabeth River “paddlewheel” ferry. He stands at his post behind a large, wooden-spoked wheel. A radar array and a GPS chart-plotter get his attention when he’s not making 360-degree visual

sweeps around the boat. From his glass enclosure, he watches as many as 150 passengers board the double decker with the big paddle wheel on the stern. “The paddle wheel’s just for show,” Dutton says. “Twin diesels give us all the power we need. But she’s flat bottomed, so she crabs a lot when you’re turning into a dock.” (Without a keel, the boat slides sideways and forward somewhat when the rudders are turned.) “New captains have to make big adjustments to control these ferries,” he says. Docking and close quarters maneuvering are the most trying times for a ferry-boat helmsman. Dutton eases the unwieldy ferry to the landings more than 50 times during a shift. “When I’m training someone new, I have them imagine there’s an egg between the boat and the dock,” Dutton says. “They break a lot of eggs at first.” Dutton doesn’t break the eggs. The trip from Norfolk’s Waterside venue to Portsmouth’s downtown High Street landing is less than a nautical mile and takes about 12-minutes. It’s America’s oldest continuous ferry service route, and it remains a popular alternative to the tolls and tunnels connecting the two cities. The ferry was founded in 1636 by Adam Thoroughgood, who had his own deck-to-wheelhouse story. Brought to Jamestown as an indentured servant in 1622, he became a community leader and member of the House of Burgesses colonial legislature. These days, ferry passengers are as likely to see a cruise ship or US Navy warship as they are to see pleasure boats transiting the Intracoastal Waterway on an Elizabeth River crossing. What they’re not likely to appreciate is the history-making captain working on the top deck above their heads. Treasures Worn by Time and Travel Sea glass hunting on the Chesapeake Bay story and photos by Mary McCarthy
S
ea glass is wave-worn glass deposited on beaches, washing in from shipwrecks or distant shores. These pieces are treasured by collectors, and vary in rarity and value by age, color and type. My own sea glass journey, sparked by a perfectly worn orange cat-eye marble at a w aterfront park in Kent County, Maryland, has taken me to beaches around the world. But my favorite hunting grounds are close to home, on the Chesapeake Bay. “Beach treasures, and especially the jewel-like sea glass, are the siren’s call that draw many of us back into nature again, like we were as children, playing tag with the waves, with the sun in our eyes and the wind at our back, searching, searching for that elusive piece of sea glass,” says Deacon Ritterbush, better known as Dr. Beachcomb, author of The Beachcomber’s Odyssey. Finding sea glass on the Bay is difficult, and it’s a diminishing resource. “Along the Chesapeake, many areas have seen rising water levels over the past decade,” says Richard LaMotte, author of Pure Sea Glass, The Lure of Sea Glass, and proprietor of The Sea Glass Sanctuary retreat. “Meanwhile property owners along the Bay continue to secure their land with rip-rap and bulkheads which leads to disappearing beaches.” Sea glass cannot be produced by artificial methods. It takes years to accomplish the desirable smooth and frosted effect. Glass that has been in the water for years goes through a transformation as minerals react with the soda and lime in the glass to produce a distinctive sparkling, which distinguishes the piece as genuine. specific heat capacity, a measure of how much energy it takes to raise its temperature. The specific heat of a metal like aluminum or steel is much lower, which is why a frying pan heats up in less time than it takes a pot of water to boil. The high specific heat of water actually moderates our climate, though in the middle of a freeze like what we had in January, we may wish it didn’t, because the Bay and its rivers take a long time to warm up. But what do growing degree days and specific heat have to do with trees, shrubs, fish, and crabs? It turns out that around the Chesapeake, GDDs and specific heat grow in parallel. Thus, it’s possible to look at the progression of trees and shrubs and make educated guesses about what is going on in the water. People who live around the Chesapeake have long developed these natural signposts. The most obvious is our shadbush, a member of the large rose family, which also includes apple and cherry trees. Shadbush grows as a multi-trunked shrub or small tree in wet or damp soil along the Chesapeake’s upper tidal streams and rivers. Shadbush derives its name

ll of the players in the Chesapeake spring, fish and plant like, are related in the dramatic progression from winter dormancy to full-race life. They are cold-blooded (or maybe, for the trees, cold-sapped). Each species’ activity level is dependent on the accumulated heat of its surroundings. Puzzling out this phenomenon is akin to understanding the essential difference between weather and climate. Seasonal change is not a one-day phenomenon. A random sixty-degree day in early February does not mean that the groundhog Punxsutawney Phil got his prediction wrong. For plants, shrubs, and trees, horticulturists and foresters look at accumulation of growing degree days (GDD), which measure the average of high and low temperature above a certain level (around the Chesapeake, 50 degrees.). Thus, a day with a high of 55 and a low of 45 would produce zero GDD, while one with a high of 65 and a low of 50 would produce 7.5 GDDs. Plants have specific GDD needs to begin budding, leafing out, and flowering. Water behaves differently. It has a very high

from its habit of putting out showy white blooms from late March through April into early May, a time period that coincides with the spawning runs of hickory and American shad in those streams and rivers. True to the rose family, those blossoms turn into tasty berries, though birds usually get to them earlier than the few humans who know about them. Their 60- to 70-GDD requirement coincides with the solar energy necessary to raise stream temperatures to the mid-50s. For many of us, (with apologies to the Maritime Republic of Eastport), the true coming of spring is not the burning of socks but fishing for these supremely athletic members of the herring family while enjoying the white blossoms along the banks. A little later in the spring comes our lovely, flowering dogwood, Virginia’s state tree and flower. Its flowers are small and drab, surrounded by the creamy white bracts (modified leaves) that we recognize as its blooms. With a larger trunk, broader spread, and taller height, this tree requires more accumulated

heat, and so, more GDDs, around 100. More warmth brings out the flowers and bracts along our upper rivers in mid-April, about the time the water approaches 60 degrees to trigger the spawning runs of our beloved white perch. Larger downstream water volumes warm more slowly. Concurrent with the white perch but at slightly lower temperatures, our equally beloved rockfish begin to spawn, giving us more excuses to enjoy spring around the water. Arguably the most dramatic event comes in mid-May when the water reaches 65. By this time, the GDD count is up around 140. Visit the shoreline almost anywhere around the Chesapeake and you’ll notice two things: the tall black locust trees are showering their white blossoms, and there are empty crab shells in the shallows. The peeler-run has begun. Pick up one of those shells and you’ll find it hinged at the front, with the interior empty except for the remains of the crab’s old gills. Somewhere nearby, the former occupant, now 25- to 30-percent larger, is recuperating from its backward escape, hiding around an old piling or in a bed of new underwater grass until its shell hardens and its muscles start working well again. It’s a strenuous process requiring metabolic energy that the crabs didn’t have until the water raised their temperatures to this level, just as the accumulated GDDs gave the locust trees the energy to flower. This is the season for soft crab sandwiches, and, in lower-Chesapeake haunts like Mobjack Bay, for anglers to float soft crabs for speckled trout at the edge of dark. Watermen like Tangier Mayor James “Ooker” Eskridge are setting peeler pots, fishing them, and losing sleep to care for the livestock peelers in shallow tanks in their shanties, waiting to “dip-up” when the crabs slough (molt), grade them as mediums, hotels, primes, slabs, and whales, and prepare them for shipping. 1. Combine the vinegar, oregano, crushed red pepper, salt, garlic, parsley and lime juice in a food processor. 2. Slowly add in the olive oil while blending. 3. Cover the blue catfish with the desired amount of chimichurri marinade and refrigerate while preparing the Slaw and Grilled Corn Salsa.
1. Whisk together the mayonnaise, sugar, vinegar, chipotle and lime juice in a bowl until combined. 2. Slowly add the slaw mix to the cabbage until desired consistency is reached. 3. If you would like more heat, add more chipotle puree.
1. Place the grilled tortillas on a plate and top with the cooked catfish, Grilled Corn Salsa, Slaw and fried sweet potato sticks. 2. Garnish with lime slices.

Avenger brands. The Bulls Bay line includes five relatively simple, value-priced center console models. Their 230 and 200 come with deep cockpits, sharp deadrise angles, and T-tops, while the 2200, 2000, and 1700 are bay-type boats with low-sides, shallower deadrises, and no T-tops. Bay boats often get skeptical looks around the Chesapeake because people think their low freeboard makes them too wet in rough water. That judgement is not necessarily correct. Seaworthiness has more to do with hull shape than how high a boat’s sides are. The Bulls Bay 2200 is a good example. On the open Bay just outside the mouth of the Patapsco River, the bow’s sharp forefoot cleaved the short, two-foot seas well, while the 21-foot, eight-inch length and 15-degree running bottom allowed the hull to rise onto plane easily in the teens, giving us a wide range of speeds to adjust to the chop. That well-shaped bow damped the seas completely, keeping us dry. There wasn’t a drop of spray anywhere in the cockpit when we returned to the landing. beam, the 2200’s hull is very stable. We drifted comfortably with the engine idling in neutral. To return to the river, we trimmed the engine up slightly and ran with the seas. The hull tracked well, with no tendency to wander. Though it performs well as is, I would add the optional trim tabs to fine-tune the 2200’s running angle and adjust side-to-side angle for quartering into seas. Power for our test boat was a Suzuki 150, a strong engine that can push the 2200 into the upper 40s, but those speeds are rarely useful in the Chesapeake’s open waters. A better choice for most owners is Suzuki’s lighter, well-proven 140, which would still provide top speeds in the upper 30s, with plenty of power for carrying a family on a picnic, and excellent fuel economy. Cruising speeds would be anywhere in the 20s. That’s more than enough for running-and-gunning on breaking fish or a long day exploring the flats and grass beds of Tangier Sound or Mobjack Bay. Add the valuable ability to slow
down efficiently into the teens, to cover water while looking for birds and fish, and to be comfortable when the going gets rough. The 2200’s layout is simple. The broad, unobstructed bow deck holds a flush, pull-up cleat, an anchor locker for a Danforth-type hook, chain, and rode; a large central storage area for bulky items; a long, lockable storage compartment to port, and another to starboard with horizontal racks for four rods up to seven feet long. The console’s front seat holds a small livewell that could double as a cooler for lunch and beverages. Inside the console, there are spaces for up to three batteries—one for starting and two for a bow-mount trolling motor, plus a bit of additional storage. The dash has a panel for engine gauges, with space left over for an electronic display up to nine inches (diagonal measure) and a linked VHF radio. Each side of the console offers three vertical rod holders and a cup holder. The standard helm seat is a leaning post with four rod holders behind,

grab bars, and secure space for a cooler/fishbox beneath. The stern deck provides a removable, central, padded seat over a large, oval livewell. On either side are finished storage compartments, while a hatch in front of the engine provides access to a well-arranged plumbing system for the livewell, optional raw-water washdown, scupper lines, and rigging tubes. My only gripe is that the storage compartments, while nicely gelcoated, prevent access to the insides of the transom and fittings like the forward ends of the scuppers. I’d rather they be simple lift-out trays that allow better access to the sides of the bilge. This bay boat's stability and broad foredeck are made for casting to fish. The stern deck also serves as a stable fishing platform. The shallow deadrise allows the 2200 to slip into shallow coves and creeks easily or pull up on a beach. Annapolis museum nets hearts & minds. BY NA NC Y TAY LOR ROBSON
I
t’s idyllic at Annapolis Maritime Museum’s Ellen O. Moyer Nature Park Campus, twelve woodsy acres along Back Creek’s eastern edge. There’s a small, creekside bandstand with seating under the trees. I c an imagine a June evening, a margarita, a rose-and-gold summer sunset and music. But not today. Today, it’s spitting snow, and a 3 0-knot wind whips the leafless limbs. Third-graders from Indian Creek Elementary have spilled out of buses and scuttled into the warmth of the surprisingly attractive Depression-era water plant now used by Annapolis Maritime Museum as classrooms, meeting and office space. Inside one classroom, the students are eagerly examining large photos of watermen in foul weather gear and white boots hunched over oyster tongs, the scene shrouded in sleet. “What do you see?” educator Candace Hillard asks the group. “They’re standing on the side of the boat and there’s ice,” observes one child. “They are grabbing blue oysters out of the sea,” says another. Hillard points to a set of eight-foot oyster tongs on the floor, “Who wants to try to lift them?” One boy throws his hand in the air. He scoops up the rakes and struggles manfully to keep both wobbling ends from touching the floor. “Heavy,” he gasps. “With oysters in them, they can weigh more than 60 pounds,” Hillard tells him, an amount probably equal to the boy’s total displacement. Murmurs of “wow” waft around the room. Between today’s weather, the tongs, and the evocative photos, these kids are beginning to understand the unremittingly physical nature of a w aterman’s work. (“It’s no’ fish ye’re buying; it’s men’s lives,” is how Robert Louis Stevenson put it).

indefatigable Museum classrooms and offices at the activist, the Ellen O. Moyer Nature museum was an Park campus. effort to save the abandoned building, slated to be replaced by a condo development, and with it something of the character of a once solidly working-class, water-dependent community. “Peg was trying to save Annapolis from itself,” says L.B. “Buck” Buchanan, one of the founders. “She sponsored the zoning ordinances that prevented the building of tall buildings and preserved the waterfront for public use. She was a charter member of the Eastport Historical Society, and that led to the acquisition of Barge House [now a meeting and event space] and ultimately, that led to leasing McNasby from the city of Annapolis, which owns it.” Wallace provided the impetus, but Buchanan was instrumental in bringing it to fruition. “Buck raised money and provided the vision,” says Dick Franyo, owner of The Boatyard Bar and Grill in Eastport and an early board member. To make the vision a reality, they had to put the place to use. “It opened as a combination museum and seafood co-op,” says museum president and CEO Alice Estrada. The co-op fizzled, but the building, a tangible reminder of the Bay-based economy, was a natural for the education program. “The students need to understand both ecology and economy,” notes Estrada. “It all works together.” To imprint on young minds, lessons are vividly personal as well as academic, which is where van Alstine comes in. Using his own experience, he draws students into the lives and livelihoods

In a second classroom, Education Director Sarah Krizek has given the kids a lesson in oyster anatomy (all of the museum educators have environmental and/or biology degrees) and now, teams at tables are dissecting oysters. Scribes in each team write down what they do, see and feel. “The teachers are extremely knowledgeable,” says Fowler as she watches her class, their faces practically in the water. “We come every year.” Hillard, who holds a natural resources policy degree from Cornell, also spent a year with the Chesapeake Conservation Corps where boots-in-themarsh programs gear educators toward physical connections with the material. It all feeds into the museum’s program, which offers the kind of visual, verbal, and experiential combo-meal that keeps even fidgety boys enthralled. “Three years ago, we were examining an eel that jumped out of the tank,” remembers Indian Creek third grade teacher Deborah Fowler. “Watching the kids try to catch it to put it back was wonderful, and they talked about it for days, but they’ll remember it for years.” John Van Alstine, a working waterman who has been an adjunct to the museum’s program for fifteen years, can testify to the “stickiness” of the learning. “I was at a shop one day and one young lady stopped me, who remembered what I’d told her class ten years before,” he says. The museum has come an impressively long way since its humble beginnings in 2000 in Eastport’s McNasby Seafood & Oyster Company and Barge House buildings, the last oyster packinghouse on the western shore. Spearheaded by the late Peg Wallace, a local realtor and

that have depended on the Bay for generations. “If they’re not aware of where their food comes from, and [that] it’s a public resource that they own, I try to bring them how it all combines,” says Van Alstine, who also spends an estimated 10 to 14 days a year on legislation.
He helps students understand the disparate skills watermen need, showing students his shellfish shipper’s license, logbooks and the forms he’s required to keep up to date for monthly health inspections. He charts the relationship between water quality— “If that water’s not clean, there’s not
enough harvest”—and the health of the local economy by drawing the students into an imaginary community. “You don’t like to eat seafood?” he asks them. “You’re a restaurant owner, a trucker. Still not affected? You work in the restaurant, or on the loading dock. Still not? You have the local movie theater. People need to earn a living to buy tickets to the shows. I show them dollars and cents.” In addition to the bottom line, he also shares the immeasurable pleasures of the job. “I tell them about the joy of the work itself,” he says. “I see the sun come up, watch a bald eagle fly—it’s all part of my paycheck.” The museum’s inspired repurposing of the McNasby building on the west campus and Moyer Park’s decommissioned water treatment plant to the east are not just opportune. They represent physical connections to water quality and the health of the creatures,

including the humans, who depend on it, and create a textured backdrop that enhances the programs much like sunrise and eagles enhance a waterman’s life. But the path to these successes has been anything but a walk in the park. In 2003, not long after they had taken possession of the building, hurricane Isabel severely damaged the McNasby campus. “Isabel was a great setback,” Buchanan remembers. “It took five years to raise the funds to restore it to its current state.” Even so, the board plowed ahead. The year after the hurricane, the museum partnered with the city and the Chesapeake Chapter of the U.S. Lighthouse Society to assume ownership of the Thomas Point Lighthouse and began taking people out for tours. In 2007, the environmental education programs began at the McNasby campus. In 2016, the museum acquired the Ellen
O. Moyer Nature Park, a city-owned waterfront property. “The city was so smart to give them that unused asset; they are so dedicated to making things work,” says Franyo. In its 2018 Annual Report, the museum celebrated a 10,0000-participant education program milestone and a merger with the Annapolis-based Box of Rain Program for underprivileged kids. The Moyer Park property has been restored with a $500,000 grant and gifts in kind such as the green roof whose plants and installation were donated. Another recent donation sits at the McNasby dock—the skipjack Wilma Lee, a visible piece of Bay heritage built by the legendary Bronza Parks. In addition, a small army of committed volunteers act as docents and tour guides. Other volunteers pitch in to restore wooden boats, do maintenance, set up and take down for events and lectures, assist in education projects, garden, and so on.
This day, the McNasby classroom, second graders from Rivera Beach Elementary sprawl on the cement floor intently filling out their Chesapeake Champion booklets. Their low voices bounce off of walls covered with huge Chesapeake photos by CBM contributor Jay Fleming. Educator Marco Rojas then plays an observation game with the students, asking them to note what he’s wearing, then to turn away. He shucks his foul-weather jacket. When the kids turn back, he asks what he’s removed. After more shuckings (watch, wrist bands), Rojas quizzes them on natural wildlife habitat in prep for a visit to the Back Creek living shoreline, which was restored by the museum staff and volunteers in 2015 under a Maryland Natural Resource grant. They troop outside to huddle by the thrashing reeds and peer into the shallows. “The water is noticeably cleaner than when they started in 2015,” notes

flounder, who’s nearly invisible on the aquarium’s sandy bottom. “I see the eyes!” one bright-spark crows. The others crowd around in time to see the startled fish wriggle out of its hiding-in-plain-sight-place and

On days when it isn’t blowing a gale and spitting snow, students suit up in the museum’s waders for a more immersive experience. “We [usually] have our kids walking in the water pulling a seine net between them, and examining the critters under microscopes,” she says. Assuming short attention spans, they keep the kids on the move, stopping long enough for them to take in a lesson, but not long enough to lose even one to distraction. In the exhibit room, another group bends over tubs. Educator Kirsten Barbera holds out a minnow-sized mummichog for them to gently touch while explaining the principle of countershading, the way dark backs and light undersides provide camouflage from predators whether the fish is viewed from above or below. Continuing the camouflage theme, she leads them across the room to find the
scoot to the opposite side of the tank. In between stations, the students run their hands over a replica oyster, complete with barnacles, and swarm over the sawn-in-half bateau, Miss Lonesome, imagining themselves

aboard. “It’s about touching,” says Estrada. It’s a far cry from many museums where touching is verboten. Educators here are in the process of creating new hands-on exhibits while the board of directors plans the next stage of growth. “The whole next chapter is a huge change and an increase in their capacity to educate kids and really make it much more appealing to visitors,” says Franyo. In good weather, the broaddecked porch that overhangs the creek is perfect for parties. (In my head, I’m back to warm June evenings and margaritas). And the beach is ideal for kayak launching, spring equinox sock-burning, concerts, the annual Boatyard Beach Bash, and even some evening solitude. “The next step is to finalize the plans for new exhibits in McNasbys and on the other side for developing the park,” says Buchanan. “There will be more structures for
public activities. It will take us a couple-three years to get the money…” But he’s clearly undaunted. The museum casts a wide net that encompasses rich programs buttressed by a variety of revenue streams, and, thanks to the efforts of savvy, committed people at its core, it all works. “Their board is the most dedicated hands-on board that really looks into things thoroughly,” says Franyo. “They mind the dollars better than any board I’ve seen.” Those dollars, an ongoing effort, enable them to pull it all off, but it’s the mission—bigger, broader and tougher to quantify—that is the real bottom line. Buttressed by a keen appreciation of the Bay and its environmental and economic mosaic, it’s ultimately about netting hearts and minds to preserve our shared Chesapeake experience and heritage.

arly one morning last summer, I arrived at Kent Island’s Kentmoor Marina to board the Southern Belle, Captain Mike Sadler’s 38-foot charter-fishing boat, to participate in the annual Casey Cares Rockfish Tournament. Almost nothing beats Chesapeake Bay striped bass fishing, but tournament fishing for a cause rates high on that short list. Don’t get your lines twisted, though. Bragging rights matter. It’s just that sometimes there are bigger stakes. ¶ My fishing partners included young Bailey Lightner, her parents, Ben and Betty, and their friends, Bernie Caplan and Jessica Cearfoss. The excursion was made possible by the Casey Cares Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded in 2000 with a commitment to provide unique programs, opportunities, and experiences for families of children confronting serious health challenges.

Much of the day’s action would take place up the road at the Bay Bridge Marina’s check-in station, where many of the participants gathered before and after fishing, but the Lightner family’s group and I were going out on Sadler’s custom built deadrise fishing boat out of Kentmoor, adjacent to some the Chesapeake’s most fertile fishing grounds. Sadler is a third-generation Eastern Shore waterman, and, having worked on the Bay for over 40 years, he knows the best sites and techniques to guide a successful day of fishing. Within five minutes of the first cast, Bailey was reeling in her first fish of the day. Bailey is a fifth-grader with two younger sisters—Becca and Brennan—and a passion for horses. She raises chickens, enjoys photography and loves watching movies. She’s a basketball fan. She

loves fishing so much, she chose the Casey Cares tournament over attending her fourth-grade field trip. And she was born with a rare medical disorder. “Basically, Bailey’s bone marrow is unable to produce red blood cells,” her mom Betty told me over a mid-morning break. “She was diagnosed with Diamond-Blackfan Anemia when she was six months old, and would most likely have died if we hadn’t taken her to the hospital when we did,” Betty said. “We spent three days at Johns Hopkins where she was being treated. It slowly sunk in how close we had been to losing her.” There are only 800 known cases world-wide, and the Lightners learned that not only does DBA endanger their daughter’s well-being, but treatments such as blood transfusions and steroid dosages also carry substantial

In addition to the annual rockfish tournament, Casey Cares organizes major fundraising events including a golf tournament, a 5K run, a Rock ‘N’ Roll Bash, and a formal gala. This year they will host their first sporting clays competition. In 2011, the foundation set a milestone of providing more than 1,000 family festivity activities in a year. The Lightners were referred to Casey Cares by a Johns Hopkins Child Life Specialist, and according to Betty, their support has been miraculous, including birthday packages and tickets to the movies, concerts, the National Aquarium, the Nutcracker Ballet, and Ravens games. “When you have to watch your child go through a lot medically, and persevere through tough things, the joyful experiences mean so much, and feel amplified sometimes,” Betty says. “With these opportunities and these times we’re able to share with our family through Casey Cares, we

get to take a step away from the worry and thoughts about medical problems, enjoy things we might not otherwise get to do, and make invaluable memories together. We don’t have to think about scheduling doctor appointments, blood draws, needles and lab work, treatment options, possible cures, research, or life expectancies. We can just be normal. “When we participate in these events, what strikes me is not just seeing the kids’ happiness but seeing the smiles on the parents’ faces. It is obvious that they needed the respite just as much as their child does. Getting to take a break from the hard stuff, to enjoy the fun stuff…That’s one of the many blessings Casey Cares has given us.” On this day, the fun stuff was provided by a donation of the tournament’s $1,000-per-boat entry fee. It never really got sunny, but there was a radiance and warmth surrounding us the whole time we were out on the Bay. Created by longtime Casey Cares board member John Sovero, the annual rockfishing tournament is now approaching its fourth year. The competition encourages tournament teams to help boost the foundation’s resources and public awareness throughout the year by hosting separate fundraisers, such as parties and game nights. The captain who raises the most money in this opening challenge fishes for free in the next year’s tournament. Recently, I had an opportunity to catch up with Bailey and her mom. Betty said, “Bailey’s smaller than most kids her age. She doesn’t gravitate toward sports, but when she’s fishing she’s in her element. We say she’s like an ant, she’s so tiny, but she can carry twice her weight. Reeling in those fish, she was in her sweet spot.”
The Lightner party landed ten fish that morning, not counting the ray Betty snagged. The biggest striper was 27 inches, caught by Bailey. When they returned home with their rewards, they cooked and ate the fish, trying different spices and recipes; creating more memories even after the fishing trip. They hope to take part in this year’s tournament, and in the
meantime, Bailey fishes in her community pond every chance she gets. She’s a fisherwoman to be reckoned with, and a fighter to admire. SECRET BEACHES OF THE CHESAPEAKE by Amy Pelsinsky y toes are wriggling in soft sand as the Chesapeake Bay laps at the shore a f ew feet away. The sky is a p erfect blue with a f ew puffs of cloud. A group of sailboats bob in the distance. Tangles of dried seagrass rustle in the breeze. I’m cocooned in a private hideaway not much bigger than a beach blanket, tucked in a sweet spot where the grassy turf meets the shore. Guarded by a tulip poplar tree that offers dappled shade as the tide ebbs and the sunlight shifts, no one knows I’m here.

Just steps away, two men are firing up the grill for a family reunion, as relatives arrive in matching blue t-shirts carrying more food than the grove of picnic tables can possibly hold. Down the shore a piece is a public beach filled with sunscreensmeared kids running back and forth from the sand to the sea testing out the water. There is a bathhouse and a concessions stand. A father and son are heading from the parking lot to a rocky jetty with fishing rods in hand. This is Rocky Point Park in Essex, less than a 30-minute drive from Baltimore City, and one of many access points to the Chesapeake Bay suitable for a day in the sun. No need to travel to busy beaches along the Atlantic coast when you can find your own spot of sand close to home. There are nearly 7,000 miles of shoreline along the Maryland portion of the Chesapeake Bay, 761 public access sites, and many secret spots waiting to be discovered. I’ve been searching for gems along the Chesapeake for years, trying to conjure up that undeveloped strip of sand in Calvert County where my parents and I used to picnic in tantalizing proximity to sea and sand. A small stand of scraggly pine trees offered a bit of shade for our feast of cold Shake ‘n Bake chicken and homemade brownies, washed down with a thermos of lemonade. We could’ve been the first settlers for all I knew. I don’t ever remember seeing another soul. I do recall the velvet-like ripples on the water. The cool, salty air. The peace of it all. It’s still possible to find a sliver of solitude, to imagine you are the only one with a waterfront view, despite 18.2 million people that live in the Chesapeake Bay region. Here are a few of my favorite spots and tips on how to find your own sandy refuge:

BIRD'S EYE VIEW OF CHESAPEAKE BAY Travel north towards the Pennsylvania line and down along one of the many finger-like peninsulas that poke in to the northernmost part of the Chesapeake Bay to Elk Neck State Park that offers a f ully-accessible public beach and swimming area with coarse orange sand and lots of sun. It’s only a short stroll down the shoreline to find a q uiet, natural spot of your own with water as far as the eye can see and stands of forest to your back. Hart-Miller Island State Park, located just off the mouth of Back River in the northern Chesapeake Bay, is a 1,100-acre island about two miles from shore and only accessible by boat. These eroding islands became a mo del dredging containment site for Baltimore harbor and are now an oasis for migrating birds and recreational boaters. The western shore of the island offers safe mooring, wading, and access to a h alf-mile sandy beach. There are day-use amenities, and boaters and beach-goers can also rent bicycles to ride around the eight miles of trails on the island. Millions of years ago, sharks, whales and crocodiles patrolled the waters where Flag Ponds Nature Park now sits. Along the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay in southern Maryland, you can comb the water’s edge for sharks teeth and fossils. It’s a beautiful hike to get there. A half-mile beach path winds through cool forest that opens up to a marshy tidal wetland, tall grasses waving in the breeze. You might even fool yourself into thinking you are the first one to find this beach, as you step out into the sunlight. (Especially if you can ignore the nearby Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant in the distance.) There is a s mall fishing pier and public beach area with great swimming (and floating) in shallow waters. However, there aren’t any services near the beach, so bring water and snacks. The parking lot fills up early, and entrance to the park is limited.

WILD SHORELINES NEAR BALTIMORE Not far from downtown Baltimore you’ll find North Point State Park, once host to a wildly popular amusement park in the early 20th century, when it was just a trolley ride away from the city. It’s still a p opular and busy spot, but if you’re feeling adventurous, hike the Black Marsh Trail to find your own slice of sand along the six miles of shoreline. The trail skirts the protected Black Marsh Wildlands, a somewhat eerie swamp filled punctuated by stoic herons, turtles, and buzzing dragonflies. (Wear your mosquito repellent or move quickly!) Take one of the short fishermen’s trails through the forest to find quiet stretches of natural beach littered with nothing but driftwood. I
’ve long been fascinated by what lurks in the depths. When fishing deep or murky waters, I’m prone to moments of inattention, briefly lost in a daydream about the scenes playing out underneath the waves. I envision big fish scouring their environs like the mighty apex predators they are. Usually these imaginative scenarios come and go in seconds, and I can refocus on the task at hand, catching a fish. Exceptions, however rare, do occur. Like the time I was fishing on the James River for trophy blue catfish. On this day, my lapse in concentration almost resulted in rod and reel being yanked from my hand and taking a dive into the turbid river.
I was snapped out of my mental haze by the muscular pull of a brutish blue cat, which fought me like I stole its wallet. The heavy boat rod, and my arms, strained under the fish’s effort to free itself. It took line off the reel, and I put it back on. This give-and-take continued for what seemed like an hour, but in reality, was just under 15 minutes. When my guide hoisted the whiskered creature by net into the boat, it was not happy to see us. We quickly weighed it—45 pounds and change—and the guide commented something to the effect, “just a baby.” My gears immediately began to turn, trying to imagine what a 70-plus pounder would feel like. From that day forward, I no longer considered blue catfish as a bottom-feeding nuisance, but a quality gamefish worthy of attention. I later learned how popular these fish are, not only among river anglers in Bay rivers like the James and Potomac, where monster fish over 70 pounds are hauled over gunwales, but throughout the country. Blue cats are native to the Mississippi, Missouri and Ohio river basins, and were introduced to the James River nearly 50 years ago. Their numbers have exploded and the population has spread to other Potomac and Chesapeake rivers. Virginia and Maryland natural resource scientists classify them as invasive, non-native species whose numbers need to be monitored closely and significantly reduced. Blue catfish are apex predators, and they eat everything. Biologists have worked for many years to gauge the impact the blue catfish has on native species such as shads and herrings. Simultaneously, the recreational blue catfish fishery has developed into a world-class opportunity for anglers, who bring positive economic benefits to the May 2019

region. Moreover, commercial fishermen have targeted them, and seafood marketers and restauranteurs have promoted them as exceptional table fare, which they are. This relatively new market has its
roots in part from a Maryland task force on invasive fish, which cautions that, left unchecked, would threaten river herring and shad restoration efforts, as well as possibly put a dent in the economically and culturally important blue crab. The recommendation: Engage commercial fishermen who are looking for new revenue streams and promote the fish’s tasty flesh among chefs and seafood mongers. Today, you’re likely to find blue cat fillets at your seafood market, as well as on the menu at the pub. Blue catfish tacos, poppers and fried bites are all tasty treats with a pint of beer. (Note: the Maryland Department of the Environment generally recommends limiting consumption of Potomac River blue catfish over 24 inches to one meal a month due to potential buildup of contaminants such as PCB. Smaller, younger fish are safer and better for
eating. Virginia recommends no more than two blue cats a month over 32 inches from the Potomac tributaries. Both states have interactive maps with fish consumption advice for various locations— virginiahealth.maps and mde.maryland.gov. Blue catfish filets at the fish markets and restaurants are from small fish, and they are considered safe to eat.) But are blue cats villains, deserving of focused eradication? Some sport anglers say they are not. You may recall the vilification of the snakehead after it was discovered in a Maryland pond. Predictions were dire— The “Frankenfish” would eat everything in its path, then crawl up Pennsylvania Avenue for dessert. True, the fish’s population spread throughout Maryland, but so has the interest among sport anglers. No reasonable sport angler would argue populations

OTHER CATS Channel catfish top the list of cats on the prowl in the Chesapeake in dependable spots such as the upper Bay lumps, the Bay Bridge pilings and stone piles, Tolley’s bar and inside the Patapsco, Severn, South, West, Chester, Choptank and Magothy rivers. And, they’re also pretty good to eat.
Flathead catfish are another trophy-sized creature worth fishing for, but they are not as prevalent as channel and blue catfish. They were introduced to the James River in the 1960s, and there they have more or less remained. However, a robust population has developed in the Susquehanna River downstream of the Conowingo Dam and in other pockets, probably due to illegal transporting and releasing by misguided anglers who want to promote local fishing opportunity. But, now that they are there, the state encourages anglers to catch them and remove them. Just know that it it illegal to transport live invasive species between waters, and it’s doubly illegal (state and federal law) to transport them alive across state lines without a special permit.
2018’s record rainfall cut into fishing time and contributed to a truncated bluefish run. The channel catfish, however, rode these swaths of freshwater further down the Bay and were routinely caught in spots not typically known to hold these whiskered sport fish. It will be interesting to find out if they have stayed around the Bay for another season.

of invasive fish like snakeheads and blue catfish don’t need monitoring and sometimes culling. But, like other non-native species such as the largemouth bass, the blue catfish has spawned a passionate following, particularly in the James and Potomac where tournaments are popular and trophy chasers from across the country converge for a chance to land a monster. Like most catfish, blues are opportunistic bottom-feeders with an anything-goes diet, deploying their sensitive chin barbels to locate food. Adult blue catfish often have the run of the place. Menhaden, shads, river herring, plants, insects, crustaceans (blue crabs), worms, and whatever-fits as are on the menu. At first glance, it’s easy to confuse a blue cat with a channel catfish (another invasive) especially those under 10 pounds. Both species are smooth-skinned, with whisker-like barbels around the mouth. A blue catfish, however, has a slate-blue body without scales, whereas a channel cat’s body coloration is bluish or greenish-gray. An average adult blue catfish usually grows to about two feet or less, though it can grow as long as five feet and weigh more than 100 pounds. Channel cats are much smaller, and they are more abundant in upper Bay tributaries. Female blue catfish spawn from late May through June, seeking out protected areas under rocks or in a submerged log that’s hollowed out to lay their eggs. Females can produce hundreds of thousands of eggs. A 50-pounder might release as many as 180,000 eggs. Both parents care for the eggs and young, and from there, the juveniles school-up until they grow large enough to fend for themselves. Blue catfish are a fairly long-lived fish reaching 20 years old or older. While catfish will hit a lure or jig (I’ve even heard of them taking a

Trophy blue cat fishing gear should be stout, heavy boat-rods in the 40- to 60-pound class matched with reels of similar capabilities. Conventional, level-wind reels provide better line control than spinning gear. Opinions differ as to whether braided or monofilament fishing line is better. Braided line has more strength relative to diameter than monofilament, so you can load more line on the reel. It also stretches less than mono. However, it is very slick and doesn’t hold knots as well as mono. Some prefer the knot-strength and stretchiness of classic monofilament. Others prefer the instant, low-stretch feel of braided material. In the tidal parts of Bay rivers, setting the anchor is usually a better option than drifting for catching catfish. Yet, there are times where drift-fishing is going to produce the most fish or the biggest fish, a guide told me. He considers drift fishing an excellent way to learn to “pattern” catfish—a process we could describe as gleaning information about locating and catching catfish while you’re catching fish. You can learn the nuances of the places where they hold, on what tide and time of day. Eventually, you should catch more of them. It doesn’t require the pinpoint precision and accuracy that fishing at anchor does; rather more of a shotgun approach. I’d wager that more anglers admire blue catfish as a sporting gamefish these days than think they are an unwelcome nuisance. agree with the old saw that boating is a combination of boredom, terror and pleasure, but I believe that our commitment to self-delusion, or what I call “visioning,” is just as important to the boating experience. In other words, in our head, the weather will always be temperate and the destination a delight. The anchor will always hold, and the sunset will always be perfect. The fish will always be biting, but the mosquitoes never will. You get the idea. It is this visioning that keeps us out there, chasing the ideal. But ironically, visioning can work against us too, causing us to lose valuable time on the water. Let’s use you as an example. You spend the winter dreaming about getting a new, bigger, better chartplotter for your boat. You see yourself standing before the new chartplotter, easily negotiating some treacherous channel or creek entrance. In the spring, it goes on sale and you act on your dream and buy it. Now your vision is going to come true. But of course, it’s not that easy. First of all, the new chartplotter is bigger than the old one and, though it looked as if it would fit it your old console, it won’t, which means that you’ll need a whole new console, which will necessitate moving the engine controls, and so on.

Summer turns into fall, and about the time of the first snow, your new chartplotter is finally ready, and you can drop your refresher course in dead reckoning. Yes, you’ve lost a lot of boating time, thanks to your dream, but the following spring, when you finally get out with your new chartplotter, you negotiate the heck out of everything, and it is better, though probably not quite as gloriously better as it was in your head. But don’t worry, you’ll soon have a vision for that too. Well, I’ve been visioning too. For years, I have had an entirely practical, utilitarian, hard-bottom inflatable dinghy. Yet, for as many years, I have dreamed of a lovely, graceful, hard dinghy that would be a pleasure to row as well as a delight to behold. I chose to ignore the fact that it would also be tippier and not hold as much because that wasn’t part of my visioning process. And all that visioning was fine, until I decided to act on my dreams. Then the trouble began. Last summer, while trying to avoid meaningful work by searching for random things online, I found a beautiful, used, flag-blue Trinka dinghy with lovely lines, long graceful oars, an easy-to-carry 2-hp outboard and (bonus!), a sailing rig. I was in love. I bought it. Life was good. I’m kidding, of course, because it’s never that simple. But wait, you say, chartplotters are complicated, you are talking about a new dinghy. How hard could that be? Well, I’ll tell you. First of all, I had inadvertently bought a dinghy located four states away because it had been next to an ad for one in Annapolis. Dumb. My new dinghy was in Punta Gorda, which is in southwest Florida, convenient to nothing but sunshine and alligators. It didn’t have a trailer

and I didn’t want one, because then what would I do with it? “Well, I’ll figure it out,” I told myself and Larry, the former owner, who fortunately was (and is) a very nice and patient person. Meanwhile, I sold my old weather-worn and practical inflatable to Susanne, who keeps her boat across the dock from me at Port Annapolis. She immediately cleaned it up, repainted it and in a week had it looking like new. Susanne does things like that. I would still be googling how to clean a dinghy. That fall, I was still trying to figure out how to get the dinghy. Then it was time for me to start down the ICW. Finally, in December, when I had stopped in Marineland, Florida for a couple of months to enjoy having the Atlantic Ocean across the street, I did what I could have done in July. I rented a pick-up truck, loaded the

dinghy into the back and drove it up to Marineland. There were some complicated logistical bits and people with stronger backs involved, but that’s the gist. Once back at Marineland, I set my lovely, new, flag-blue Trinka in the water and tied it next to the boat for a few days so I could admire it and go rowing a couple of times. Then I got to work rummaging through my Bits-of-Line Collection and my Attaching-Things-To-Other-Things Collection to make a temporary lifting arrangement for my davits, since I’d thrown most of the old bits out when I sold my inflatable. With the new dinghy hanging on the davits, I could have declared the new-dinghy project complete, but it didn’t. You see, that was not my vision. I didn’t want another dinghy on davits that I would have to truss up like a cartoon criminal to keep it from
swinging frantically every time Moment of Zen took on a bit of chop or wake. Maybe your davits don’t do this, but mine do, and so, as a lazy person, I would rarely take the trouble to untruss my dinghy, including entire trips up and down the ICW. “This time will be different,” I had been telling myself during my long new-dinghy visioning process. This time I was going to install Weaver davits, which are a set of latches that attach the dinghy to the swim platform, making it easy to get in and out, and also possible to stow the dinghy by pivoting it up against the back of the boat. Sounded like a sweet idea. It was making it all come together that was, of course, complicated. In February, with the new davits in a box and the new dinghy trussed up tight on the old davits, I turned south for Stuart, then west across the

MENOKIN Menokin, if you don’t know it, is worth the trip no matter how you dream of getting there. The ruined home of F rancis Lightfoot Lee, signer of t he Declaration of I ndependence, is being preserved, not through the usual method of r econstruction, but with the missing parts remade of g lass. Sitting alone in a field on the edge of old-growth forest, the result is ghostly and moving, or it looks like it will be—at the moment it’s still under a kind of giant carport. It is not easy to get there by boat, but it can be done. Anchoring on t he Rappahannock off of Cats Point Creek needs to be done on a calm day. And the dinghy ride up Cats Point Creek must be done without motor, either internal combustion or electric. It’s the rule. A good alternative would be to take your kayak or other paddlecraft and drive to Menokin. There is a l aunch area onto the creek. Kayaks are also available on site to rent. You can read about Menokin and Francis Lightfoot Lee, the reconstruction plans, and other good things at www.menokin.org.

Here’s it is: On a perfect, still, and temperate day in June, I will turn Zen up the Rappahannock River and, after an idyllic night at anchor in Yopps Cove off Carter Creek, continue upriver beyond Tappahannock and the Thomas Downing/U.S. 360 Bridge before dropping the hook off
Cats Point Creek. There, I will drop my beautiful flag-blue dinghy into the water. Canine security chief Bindi and navigator trainee Sammy will hop aboard, centering themselves carefully in the bottom of the boat, where they will remain motionless and uncomplaining throughout the trip. Then I will come aboard with a delightful and delicious packed lunch and the oars. And as the sun rises temperately to its zenith, the beautiful dinghy, the perfectly behaved dogs and I will work our way silently, stroke by skillful stroke, up the winding tree-lined creek to Menokin, that elegant and ghostly remnant of Colonial America that stands in the midst of Virginia’s Northern Neck. When the perfect dogs and I arrive by way of Cat Point Creek, we will scramble ashore and walk through the woods up to the house. We will walk around and around it, taking it in from every angle. When we are done, we will return to the park, where I will enjoy my perfect lunch while Bindi and Sammy doze under an old and decorative oak. Finally, we will drift slowly downstream, back to the Rappahannock and Moment of Zen. There I will clip the davits together. We will all climb out. I will hook the bottom section of the block and tackle arrangement to the butterfly loop on the dinghy seat with the snap shackle and effortlessly pivot my perfect dinghy back into place. ven in May, nights out on the water can get chilly, so you need a good cruising companion to warm up the V berth. That’s when a 100-pound Labrador retriever can come in handy. Dogs do well on boats, but they definitely need regular shoreside connections, for exercise, play and other biological necessities. That’s why you need to choose to cruise where you’re surrounded by dogfriendly marinas, beaches, parks and ports of call. Fortunately, Kent County on Maryland’s upper Eastern Shore is packed with places to have fun with your furry friend. Best of all, the nearly fresh water in the rivers and creeks makes for clean, clear, nettle-free swimming all summer long. When you’re planning your cruise for the dog days of summer, consider a stop at the Georgetown
Yacht Basin. The staff welcomes long-term stays for you, your boat and your dog – they even have a dedicated doggy-wash. While you’re there, you can rent a stand up paddle board or pedal-powered boat to share so your four-legged friend can replicate the bow pose from the Titanic movie. Sailing Associates is known as a full-service marina, and that service extends to an endless supply of dog treats, a watering station, and a shady place to leash your dog while you enjoy the pool. They’ll even lend you a leash and a life preserver for a small dog. Duffy Creek Marina, in the sheltered harbor just around the point from Sailing Associates in Georgetown, has two dog-walking areas along with a designated section of beach for dogs to frolic in the water.
Worton Creek Marina sits a mile and a half inside the creek, well protected from the open Bay, and has 16 acres for Rover’s romping and best of all, with several pet waste dispenser stations, you don’t have any excuse for not picking up after him. Lankford Bay Marina has a dog walk with a watering station, and a beach where dogs can do what it has taken mankind 30,000 years to breed them to do: retrieve tennis balls. In nearby Rock Hall, Haven Harbor Marina has a dog walk area with several pet waste dispenser stations, and North Point Marina always keeps its water bowls filled

Great Ape Local landmark “Hugh Mongous� stood guard over a Virginia Beach water park from 1977 to 1989, when an act of arson damaged the giant ape beyond repair. He was replaced in 1996 by Hugh II, who watches over the Ocean Breeze waterpark. John Margolies, an architectural critic and author of Roadside America, snapped this shot of Hugh in 1982, part of his extensive archive of color slides held by the Library of Congress.
