MY LOCAL TOWN WEM
Hello again and Welcome to our fifth issue of My Local Town Wem Well can you believe it, here we are in June, half way through the year already. It is lovely driving round the countryside, seeing it all come to life, with all the young calves, foals, lambs and the beautifull blooms which have such vibrant colours and lovely aromas. The colourfull bunting at the church fetes and busy school fairs, with everyone helping out and working hard to make their events truly special, it really is a lovely time of year in the countryside. The towns and villages also seem more vibrant, with many people out and about supporting their local business and services, this is just what we need to keep the countryside alive and thriving.
With issue 5 of My Local Town , once again we have ideas and suggestions for great days out, whether shopping, dining or just having fun! and plenty of ideas for home and garden improvements, flick through My Local Town for lots of suggestions. Lets remember to support our local communities and lets keep it local with My Local Town.
Best Wishes - Jill jill.bougen@cheshirenews.co.uk 01948 - 663135

Kit out the kids for summer The head of each tool is made out of light, yet durable, rounded glass fibre and the shafts are made out of smooth wood with rounded tips so there are no sharp edges.
If your children have already planted some seeds and look set to become budding gardeners, it’s time to kit them out with some clothing and equipment to keep them going through the seasons. Look in any garden centre and you will find an increasing range of products designed for young gardeners, from brightly coloured aprons and wellies to tools and gloves suitable for little hands. Footwear is all important when your little ones are digging outdoors, but they need to be able to slip shoes on and off as they go in and out of the house. Crocs have a new range out for kids – check out the Spiderman Cyman Crocs for boys, which should keep your child’s feet cool and comfortable. The footbed conforms to the foot, creating a custom fit. They’re priced from £21.95.
And if they want some enjoyable and easyto-follow reading, Growing Vegetables Is Fun is the first in a new series of Bookazines from Dennis Publishing. This guide, which includes 10 packets of seeds, will teach children everything they need to know about growing their own organic vegetables, It’s packed with gardening activities and challenges, with illustrated tips from veg-growing cartoon children Danny and Lilly, and is divided into useful chapters on a range of gardening subjects such as growing from seed, composting, dealing with problems and pests and making friends with garden wildlife. Available in most supermarkets, W H Smith and Borders, Wyevale Garden Centres, it is priced at £9.99.
If we’re plagued with wet weather this summer, invest in a really good pair of wellies for your child, such as Young Hunter Wellies, which come with a cushioned footbed and reflective safety patches, £25.95. Young children may benefit from a lightweight PVC raincoat from Yeo Minis in a range of fun colours and three different sizes (£12.99, stockists 0121 504 2859). Wilkinson Sword has a range of tools for adults and children so you can work alongside each other when preparing an area of your garden.

LUKE’S MAGIC Luke Baudet is a 10 year old boy who suffers from autism. Sequal recently supplied Luke with a computer system to help with his cognitive skills thus aiding his education and general development. We were pleased to receive a letter from Luke’s mother enclosing a poem which Luke had written, with the aid of his computer. It is quite easy to see why his mum is so proud of his achievement in this area. “Dear Liz I would like to say many thanks for the laptop you provided for Luke. In such a short space of time it has made a huge difference to his abilities and confidence. He is doing lots of things he would not have been able to do before. I am enclosing two poems that Luke has done, I am so proud of him. He had studies the theme at school and then wrote his own version about his own life, using the computer. I hope you enjoy reading them.” Here is one of Luke’s poems THE MAGIC BOX I will put in the box The sound of the sea rustling against the rocks, The last sight of my cat, The last word I said to my nan. I will put in the box The lick of a new born dog, LUKE BAUDET The taste devouring melting chocolate, And a man with a donkey’s head. I will put it in the box The sound of the wind rustling against the summer leaves. I will put it in the box My baby sister getting in a mess with her food And the time I held my cat. My box is fashioned from fire and ice and moon stones, With asteroids on the lid and sparks in the corners It’s hinges are the mask of Tutankhamun I Shall create dreams in my box with God walking by my side Then I shall rest in peace and harmony until the time comes for me to help others By Luke Baudet

Budget your beauty moisturising, and soothing. Keep your eyes peeled for red-hot beauty offers. Superdrug and Boots are regularly rotating limited three-for-two or buy-one-get-one-free offers for bargain hunters so check the websites for the latest offers. It’s also worth buying in bulk to get better deals with your favourite brands. We all love splurging every now and again but if you’re cutting back your beauty budget, it’s worth trying out new, cheaper alternatives. And if you’re experimenting with new colours, it’s a great idea to try out daring new shades first with less pricey beauty buys before you invest. Who knows, that shocking pink lipgloss may look slightly shocking once it’s on your lips! It’s official. The Bank of England has declared the “nice decade is behind us”. So, if you aren’t already feeling the pinch of the credit crunch, your purse strings may be tightening in the future. The UK beauty industry is worth an estimated £3.7bn and luxury, pricey products are big business. Profits at premium beauty website Space NK surged by more than 60% last year as women treated themselves to products such as Eve Lom’s £78 cleanser and Chantecaille’s £145 eye concentrate. Luxury beauty can make us feel like a pampered princess, but beauty on a budget is not impossible. Forget lining up the bathroom shelves with piles of products. Sometimes one wonder product has multiple uses, meaning you save on space and money.
If cheap and cheerful make-up products just don’t appeal, put your beauty budget towards basic ingredients and build up your own line of cosmetics. Beauty journalist Carla Oates has unveiled a rewarding way to create beauty products using everyday ingredients, detailed in her book, Feeding Your Skin [Vermilion, £9.99]. “In our quest to look good and feel modern we have indiscriminately forsaken the knowledge handed down by generations of women – nutritious, home-made, cosmetic recipes from the days when women successfully looked after their own skin,” Carla explains. Chemicals and high costs, she argues, can compromise our wellbeing. She says: “Unfortunately most beauty products are not very beautiful at all, and neither are their price tags!”
Look out for ‘-in-1’ products which cleanse, moisturise and polish the body in one hit, or a 2in-1 face wash mask which acts as an everyday facial wash or weekly mask for deep-down cleansing. Must-have classics like Johnson’s Baby Oil, £2.35, Vaseline, 79p, Pond’s Cold Cream Cleanser, £3.99, and Nivea Creme, £1.49, also provide a multitude of daily beauty rescues including cleansing, 20

Through the looking glass FEW of us can claim to have enough space in our homes and we’re always searching for ways to stretch rooms to meet our growing demands. But there’s one element you might have overlooked that could magically enhance the space and add more light – mirrors. If well-positioned, these can trick the eye into thinking that a room is double the size, whether it’s a tiny bathroom, a cramped lounge or a narrow bedroom. Interiors stylist and author Lesley Dilcock is just one of the many homes specialists who believe in mirror magic. She says: “A room without a mirror is somehow a room without a soul. Bring several of them into a room and you will immediately introduce a kaleidoscope of light and colour into space. “Mirrors are magical. They reflect images and refract light with the most bewitching and beguiling effects. Interior designers often use mirrors to alter perceptions of light and space – how often have you almost walked into a mirrored wall only to realize it’s a cunning illusion?”
a welcome distraction on a dull wall, while positioning a mirror opposite a window can reflect and enhance a stunning view. There’s no need to confine mirrors to the house. A large mirror placed at the end of a small garden, framed by greenery, is another designer trick to extend the space. You could use plate mirror glass over a whole wall, which would have the effect of doubling the dimensions of a room, but this is not a do-ityourself option. Seek advice from professional glass suppliers and fitters. Mirrors are an asset in any room. Choose from wall mirrors to free-standing mirrors and don’t overlook mirrored furniture or little touches of looking glass on items such as frames or candlesticks. So instead of simply relying on a mirror to check out your appearance, attract admiration and compliments for your home by using mirror magic.
Author Julie Savill, former editor of Good Homes magazine, agrees: “There’s so much more to using mirrors than simply hanging them in the conventional way over a fireplace or a bathroom basin.” In the BBC Good Homes book, 101 Ways To Make More Space, she shows the sparkling effect mirrors can have. Julie says: “Take a tip from the professional stylists who often simply prop a large mirror casually against a wall. It can mimic the effect of an open door, giving you the impression that you are gaining a glimpse into an adjoining room.” Crucially, mirrors also bounce light around a room and create new vistas. Adding mirrored tiles to a splashback can throw light into a kitchen and be

Get set for summer dining Summer’s on its way and that means the joy of eating outdoors and enjoying leisurely alfresco meals.
While blue skies and sun can’t be guaranteed there are a few essentials for relaxed outdoor dining.
But that doesn’t mean you should let down your stylish standards. Meals served in the open should be presented as well as those indoors, especially as you and your family and friends are more inclined to linger longer at the table.
Caroline says: “Always make sure the seating – whether it’s cushions and blankets on the grass, upholstered chairs or seats piled with cushions – is comfortable.
So don’t resort to flimsy, disposable paper tablecloths and a faded selection of wobbly plastic cups which would be more suited to a toddler’s tea party. Instead, that outdoor table setting should be a sophisticated feast for the eye. Its appearance should transform even a simple meal into an occasion and, most importantly, enhance the food.
“There’s nothing worse than perching on a hard, wobbly chair and trying to enjoy a meal. In fact, it’s impossible!” Shade a table with an awning or parasol – so that as well as preventing uncomfortable glare there’s also handy shelter from a shower. Light from candles or hurricane lamps is essential for an evening’s dining under the stars so guests can see what’s on their plates.
But making it special doesn’t require oodles of cash that will bust a summer budget, nor does it require cupboards bulging with expensive china and glass. There’s a brilliant new selection of well-designed picnic and patio tableware on the high street made in materials like melamine – so it’s both durable (highly child proof!) and cheap.
Caroline says: “When you eat outdoors the table should look less formal than an indoor setting, but just as pretty and attractive. The thing is not to be over-elaborate and to serve relatively simple but delicious food.”
So use your imagination and combine some fun new pieces with your existing china, the older the better. Formality and delicate bone china are not needed for these meals. Interiors writer Caroline Clifton-Mogg asked top designers throughout the world for the secret ingredients they use to create stunning settings. She reveals them in her book, Set With Style, and says: “What I found out is that everyone is capable of setting a great table – provided they use just a little imagination. Most of us usually set a table daily and make relaxed choices about what to display. “To make one really special it’s just a question of getting together the right ingredients – that can be china and glassware you already have – and seeing dressing the table as another form of interior design.” So be inspired by her ideas for outdoor dining. 26
