The actor, who played Martin Platt for more than two decades in the ITV soap, has long been a foodlover and now has a passion for making artisan cheese. He is in business with his own Saddleworth Cheese Company where he has been preparing crumbly Lancashire cheese. The 45-year-old has been enjoying his new lease of life so much that he felt very much at home at his first ever Nantwich & South Cheshire Show last year, where he was made a representative of the Nantwich International SAY CHEESE!: Former Coronation Street Cheese Awards. Show joint-secretary Ad- actor Sean Wilson, who played the rian Lawrence said: “It is character Martin Platt, had one of his own fantastic to have Sean as a cheeses at last year’s show. representative for our Photo by Rob Stratford show and we are delighted that he is associated with us. planned to land some bigger roles but “It is strange to think how everybody felt the influx of reality TV shows knew him as a nurse on TV but now halted his efforts. he is a cheese-maker. t already has a well-established reputation as a record breaker but the Nantwich & South Cheshire Show has surpassed itself once again this year.
The show plays host to one of the biggest cheese shows on the planet and it has cemented its position as a worldbeater with a staggering 3,230 cheese entries. That’s a huge 17% increase on last year’s number, which was a record

And it will welcome up to 35,000 people on Wednesday, July 28 when they flood through the gates of Dorfold Park. “It is just amazing that we continue to break these records,” said show jointsecretary Adrian Lawrence. We’ve sold out of all trade stands and have a record number of cheese entries yet again. “It is incredible that more and more people come back for more, despite the bad weather we had last year. It must
say something important about how popular this show really is.” Nantwich & South Cheshire Show is recognised as one of the leading one-day agricultural shows in the world and is in its 114th year. There will be 12 hours continuous ring displays from show jumping, heavy horses, cattle, sheep, dogs, falconry and gun dog displays, jazz music and The Bolddog Lings – a freestyle motocross team that will wow crowds with their dare-devil stunts. Horse rings have been created in the new equestrian area and the showground roadway has been extended to

Bumper crowd expected NANTWICH & South Cheshire Show director Roger Mills hopes for a record crowd this time out. Regularly attracting between 30,000 and 35,000 people to Dorfold Park, Mr Mills believes this year’s biggest ever event could hold the key to a bumper turnout. The showground has virtually doubled in size during the last 20 years and has been extended this year to cater for a new equestrian area. Mr Mills said: “With an increase in size, we expect a big increase in the number of people coming along to our show. “When the weather is good, we get between 30,000 and 35,000, which is fantastic but we hope for more this time around. “The cheese section grows by around 15% each year and the marquee is the biggest in the country. We’re looking
ganisation, said: “The TV shows have the nation gripped and now Nantwich is to become home to an entertainment festival featuring the best-known acts. “The country took these performers to their hearts and voted for them in their millions. They may not have carried off the winner’s prize, but all can provide incredible performances in their own right and have thousands of adoring fans. “Bringing stars from the two shows together has never been done before. It’s going to be a
fabulous weekend of music, dance and comedy right on the doorstep of local people in Nantwich.” Giant marquees still in place after the Nantwich Show will be used for Nantwich Live, allowing it to go ahead whatever the weather. Tickets for Nantwich Live are on sale, starting at £25 (seated) and £35 (standing). Outlets include the Tourist Information Centres in Nantwich, Chester, Stoke and Wrexham. ● For more information visit www.nantwichlive.co.uk.
George and Adrian keep it in the family ADRIAN and George Lawrence have been getting their teeth into their 24th Nantwich &South Cheshire Show as joint secretaries.
The father-and-son team have been getting busier and busier every year but are still enjoying the responsibility of handling the finer details and organisation of one of the biggest one-day shows in England. Adrian said: “It has been so long that it took me a while to remember just how many years I have been involved with the show. “It gets harder every year, purely because of the success of it. The cheese entries are up 17%, which means there is 17% more work to do. “It gets bigger and bigger and bigger and the pressure this year is even greater than last year. Having said that, it always feels worthwhile once you walk out on to the showground on the day.” George was initially show secretary, and for most of the last 24 years Adrian has been at his side. At first it was very much as an assistant but the roles have been reversed for the last decade. Still known as joint secretaries, Adrian is the captain of the ship with George keeping him up to speed with his wealth of experience. Adrian added: “We have worked together for so long that we know exactly what each

RS040707Show-003 other is doing without really having to worry about it. “We can do something without even telling each other because we both know exactly what needs doing and we know the job will be done, and done well in the end.” Formed in 1897 as a cheese show in Nantwich, the show moved to the current base at Dorfold Park in 1945. It wasn’t until 1987 that George took over the reins from Graham Martin.

AWARD-WINNER: Bill Howarth from Southport won the Silver Challenge Cup and gained 27 wins in flowers and vegetables at last year’s Nantwich & South Cheshire Show.
A
n unprecedented level of entries has left committee members of the Horticulture section bursting with delight.
Normally, entry numbers from fruit, vegetable, flower and plant growers are slow in the run-up to Nantwich Show with a late flurry almost guaranteed. But this year the entries have already come thick and fast, thanks in part to the glorious summer weather, but committee secretary Tony Gentil puts it down to a growing trend towards ‘growing your own’. He said: “Normally entries don’t come in until the week before. People look at their gardens and
see how it’s coming along. We’ve already had entries coming in up to a month ago, so we’re really pleased. “This movement started two or three years ago. Most allotment holders were men who’d retired, but then you started getting young professional couples who live in a flat getting involved. “We’re seeing a change and a renewed enthusiasm. Now we find that the makeup is probably 50-50 of traditional expert growers and of new entrants. “I would think we’ll have a record figure by the time the show comes round.” Last year a schools class was introduced with a £50 voucher
prize from sponsor Taylor’s Choice for the winning school, and more schools have entered once again this year. Classes for shrubs and bushes have also been introduced to encourage more entrants. Tony said: “For example, we might ask for just a small clipping of Buddleia and it helps people realise that showing isn’t difficult and can be fun and exciting. The closing date for entries is 6pm tomorrow (Thursday). Anyone who wishes to enter can phone Tony on 01270 780828. Alternatively, download a schedule form from the Nantwich & South Cheshire Show website www.nantwichshow.co.uk.
