It's showtime!
I
t’s that time of year again – the biggest one-day agricultural show in the country is back!
FINISHING TOUCHES: Adrian, left, and George Lawrence, with trophy and plan for the 2008 event.
And after a one-year forced break, when everything except the famous cheese show was literally a washout because of the weather, organisers are expecting bumper crowds. “We’re expecting crowds of about 30,000 this year,” said joint secretary Adrian Lawrence, who has been organising the event with his father, George, for the past 22 years. “There seems to be even more interest than usual this year after we had to cancel last year’s event.” The one-day extravaganza,

which appeals to young and old alike, is costing £500,000 to stage. It’s been a year in the planning. The minute one show ends, preparation for the next begins. “We start straight away, it never finishes,” said Adrian,
adding that his father and himself are “full time, all the time!” Such is the show’s popularity that the stands have been sold out for months. “We’re turning people away every single day of the week,” said Adrian. The International Cheese Show, the world’s largest cheese show, is expecting a massive 2,500 entries – a substantial increase on last year’s record breaking number of 2,260. And the town benefits from the Nantwich Show too. “There’s a huge knock-on effect for Nantwich and the traders,” said Adrian. “From the pubs and hotels to the shops. The town is always very busy.”
Programme of events Tuesday, July 29 7.30pm: Open air ecumenical church service. Wednesday, July 30 8.45am: Shire horse judging. 9am: Cattle judging (cattle ring). 9.30am: Cathedral City Cheese Lover’s judging by celebrity (cheese pavilion). 10am: Sheep judging (sheep ring).

ubbly former Emmerdale soap star Malandra Burrows will be swapping the Yorkshire Dales for South Cheshire fields to judge in the Nantwich International Cheese Show marquee.
The 42-year-old, who played Kathy Glover in the ITV soap for 17 years, will be taking a break from her current work in theatre drama to step on stage at the show on Wednesday, July 30, picking the winner of the Cheese Lovers’ Trophy. The actress will be polishing up on her cheese knowledge ahead of judging the finest cheese at the show at Dorfold Hall Park. Malandra will be nibbling on a wide variety of more than 50 cheeses, whittled down from about 2,000, throughout Wednesday morning before giving the number one cheese the celebrity seal of approval. And every shape, type, colour and combination of cheese is eligible to enter the Nantwich International Cheese Show, which culminates in the Cheese Lovers’ Trophy. Competition is intense to win the Cheese Lovers’ Trophy, which is one of the show’s most prestigious awards. The top-trophy goes to the cheese that wins a combination of the vote of the people and the celebrity choice. And Malandra will be added to the long list of soap stars and television personalities who

Television personalties including Keith Chegwin and Cheryl Baker as well as Zoe Ball and Emmerdale’s Christopher Chittell aka Eric Pollard, are just a few of the many stars who have taken time out to take up the post as one of the judges at the popular show. “Celebrities have been coming to this show for a number of years,” said joint show secretary, Adrian Lawrence.

antwich Show is serving up a host of attractions to keep the family entertained this year – and there’s something for everyone.
More than 12 hours of entertainment is promised, ranging from show jumping, falconry, gun dogs and heavy horses to jazz music and marching bands. There will also be daring displays by an escapologist and the FMX freestyle motorcycle team. Once again, it will be home to the International Cheese Show with cheese varieties displayed by more than 2,000 exhibitors from 24 countries around the globe, all hoping to return with the Supreme Champion 2008 trophy. A record-breaking 58,000 sq ft marquee, with new suspended cassette flooring and air conditioning, will house the cheese competition which goes ahead whatever the weather, as it did last year. It is paradise for cheese-lovers, with plenty of samples to nibble on and bargain, direct-from-themaker, slabs of cheese to buy. Other huge marquees will display a range of home, food, garden, leisure, home produce, horticulture and handicraft displays. Examples of every hobby will be on display from baking and beekeeping to floral art and photography. Stunning examples of design will be found in everything from wide-brim hats to knitwear. icing techniques and bread plaits that would go down well with all that cheese and homemade wine. The farming community will be well-represented in the various horse, cattle, sheep, dogs and poultry classes underlining the show’s roots in agriculture. Donning his famous black bowler for the 20th year will be show chairman, John Broomhall, hot on the heels of receiving the Capesthorne Millennium Cup for a “lifetime of exceptional endeavours in promoting the interests of agriculture and countryside-related activities”. Father and son team, George and Adrian Lawrence, remain the administrative hub of the whole show, running proceedings from their office base at Aston, near Nantwich. The pair have been inundated with enquiries for tickets and entries into every category. Adrian said: “This show is probably more eagerly anticipated than any other, especially after last year when we had to cancel the event, due to the dreadful weather conditions. “People seem to be looking forward to it more than ever and we have lined up some spectacular ring entertainment which will not disappoint them. “We are billing it as a day not to be missed and have every confidence in it living up to that.”

WOWING THE CROWDS: Aaron Stannage, Mark's son, who is also involved with the stunts.
DEATH defying stunts by one of Britain’s top escape artists will be displayed in the main ring on the showground at the Nantwich and South Cheshire Show. Stuntman Mark Stannage, who started at the tender age of 14, has appeared on several television shows and films in his 20-year career. His Spectacular High Fall Show is sure to wow the crowds when he climbs up a specially constructed tower, leaps off and comes plummeting, head first, to the ground with a big bang. His Death Defying Amazing Flaming High Dive claims to be the only act of its kind in Europe today. Mark climbs up a specially constructed tower, dowses himself in petrol, sets fire to himself and dives off the tower, head first, into an air bag 60ft below. In The Aerial Exploding Box Escape, Mark is handcuffed, chained and padlocked into a regulation mail sack. He is then secured inside a large wooden box. The box is armed with high explosives and then hoisted high up into the air. Mark only has two minutes to escape from the top of the box before it explodes. He performs in the main arena at 2.30pm and 5.30pm.

Success is vital says chairman By Jamie Oliver
N
antwich Agricultural Society chairman, John Broomhall, believes it is more vital than ever that the Nantwich and South Cheshire Show continues to be a success.
All proceeds from the event go straight back into the society’s funds before being distributed to various parts of the farming industry. Mr Broomhall says: “It is important we continue being profitable for the benefit of agriculture. The organisers of the show do it for nothing other than to support the industry. “Some of it may go to the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (RABI) or Reaseheath and some might go towards a scholarship for a young farmer. “With the number of people going out of farming it is more vital than before for us to do well. The industry certainly isn’t the same as it was 15 or 20 years ago.” Mr Broomhall was honoured by the cream of the farming crop earlier this year. He received the Capesthorne Millennium Cup from Cheshire Agricul-

The retired auctioneer received the cup from the Lord Lieutenant of Cheshire, William Bromley Davenport, who is patron of the society. Since the early 1970s Mr Broomhall has been a key figure behind staging the Nantwich and South Cheshire Show at Dorfold Park – which has attracted a record 33,0000 people on one day – and for the past 20 years he has been its chairman.
Riding high! THE amazing UK FMX Freestyle MX display team will be thrilling spectators with their incredible, high-riding, antics in the Nantwich and South Cheshire Show’s main ring. Motocross is heralded as a radical sport which features a high profile form of off-road riding. A team spokesman explains: ‘The riders are pure athletes, who have taken the sport of motocross to the next level of entertainment. “They perform acrobatic stunts over ramps between 50 and 80 ft long and the motocross bikes are designed to cope with hard landings. “It has become a leading spectator attraction and is now one of the world’s top crowdpullers.” Look out for the UK FMX Freestyle MX display team in the main ring at 1pm and at 4pm.

Showcase for crafts D
ressmaker Heather Woodward and her daughters will be adding a feminine touch to the Nantwich Show, after stitching up a new deal to exhibit handicrafts in a massively enlarged pavilion.
The Sandbach mum has been at the helm of the Home Produce, Arts and Crafts section for nearly 20 years and in all that time it has run like a well oiled machine, thanks to months of planning. Men, women and children flood the ever-growing section which acts as a showcase for their baking, art, photography and wine-making skills. With more than 100 entries already received, Heather is expecting a record show – and this year she can give the exhibits a better display area having moved to the Mornflake Pavilion which has grown 25% in MOUTHWATERING: Heather Woodward and Karen size to cover a massive Stockton look on as Trixie Bonell samples some jam 38,000sq ft. in the home produce section at the 2006. wanted all the competitive classes to be under one roof and this year I have got just that. “The Mornflake will have all the home, food, garden and leisure displays as well as floral art, home produce, arts and crafts. “Previously we were in the Town and Country marquee but that is going to be purely for shopping and trade this year and newly positioned by the main ring.” As a former entrant herself, Heather was asked to become secretary of the section when her daughters Karan and Clare were teenagers and they were soon roped in with the organising. Karan, of Wistaston and Clare, from Sandbach, both now work at Funsters in Crewe and have families of their own but find time to give mum a helping hand. They showed their handicraft skills baking her a 65th birth-
day cake. Heather added: “I’ve been dressmaking all my life and first made a christening gown to show. “What is different about the Nantwich Show is you don’t have to be a member of an organisation to enter. RICHARD Paul says he is proud to be the Nantwich International Cheese Show’s new chairman in what is to be its biggest year yet. The 38-year-old, who has been on the show’s committee for a number of years, admits it was a brave decision to go ahead with last year’s cheese show after bad weather forced the rest of the event to be cancelled. But he believes its triumph over adversity has helped stand it in great stead this year. Continuing to break records, cheese entries are up 15% to 2,638 for 2008. The director of major cheese distributor Bradbury & Son, who took over from outgoing chairman Mark Beavon, said: “Mark leaving came as a bit of a shock as he has done such a good job over the years. It was disappointing to have to appoint somebody else but I was thrilled to get the position. “The show is one of the industry’s key events of the year. But we now need to project that image beyond the North West because, although it is the biggest cheese show in the world, not everybody knows it. “The industry notices the winners of the show and we get the seal of approval from it. I’m looking forward to this year’s event as cheese entries are up 15% to 2,638, even after a turbulent year for farmers.” In his three-year vision for the show, Richard aims to enhance

But the art of cheese-making has come a long way since then and with one of the leading cheese producers and Nantwich Show exhibitors right here on our doorstep – it’s time to get cheesy. Tucked away in Hatherton, near Nantwich, is Laurels Farm the home of Joseph Heler which is one of the country’s largest producers of cheese, making no less than 16,000 tonnes a year. Now in its 51st year and still going strong, I went along to see why its cheese has been winning awards at shows the length and breadth of the country and on home turf at the Nantwich Show for half a century. “It all starts with daily deliveries of milk from some of the 130 local farms in a 35-mile radius of the site,” says production manager, Simon Elkins, as we enter one of the three cheese rooms – the temperature there soars to a sticky 28 degrees Celsius. “We get up to 34 deliveries a day bringing in a total of 460,000 litres of milk on site. But before being pasteurised the milk is subject to rigorous quality testing and pumped into the cheese vats in one of the three cheese rooms.” And it is in these cheese rooms, from about 1.30am every morning, that the cheesemakers combine the latest plant equipment with their extensive skills to perfect the technical craft of cheese-making and transform the milk into one of 40-plus varieties of cheese including Red Leicester and Double Gloucester. But I was happy to see one of the oldest recorded cheeses in British history on the menu today – Cheshire. Three 18,000 litre vats were at work, churning the milk with special cultures called ‘starters’ added to the milk to turn it sour. Then rennet, which contains enzymes, was added to cause the milk to separate the solids from the liquids – otherwise known as curds and whey. The curds were then stirred and turned on special cheese tables making it easier to drain away the whey. “We process the whey, which contains protein, lactose and water and then we sell these by-products to specific customers who use them for things like energy drinks, confectionery etc,” says Simon. Then Paul Hulme, who has been a cheese-
maker for 21 years, steps in and shows how the curds are salted, milled into small pieces and put into 20 kilo moulds ready to go into the press room for 24 hours. Here the cheese is squeezed to remove any excess moisture and is allowed to recombine. “Cheese-making is an art form and also has a lot of science behind it,” says Paul. “I really enjoy it, it is a bonus that I love cheese.” After pressing the cheese, it is then moved from the moulds, vacuum packed in special bags labelled with its weight, type and when it was made and taken to the cool room to mature. But it doesn’t end there. With the help of Andrew Toward, new product development manager, the company is constantly looking at ways to develop its cheese and come up with pioneering new cheeses to tantalise the taste buds of tomorrow’s market with more and more varieties than ever on offer on supermarket shelves. But before the cheese reaches the aisles of the likes of Tesco or on the cheeseboard menus at top restaurants in the country, it has to be graded before final packaging and then despatched to the customer. One of the graders, Terry Foden, examines the cheese on the outside, before delving in with the cheese iron. “It could have blemishes on the outside and look awful but on the inside tastes great and vice versa,” he says. “We grade it on things including texture, colour, smell, flavour and will send it back to the cool room to mature for a bit longer if necessary. Even if it’s not particularly good tasting cheese , it doesn’t get wasted and is melted down and sold to be used in processed cheese for example.” Terry adds: “At the end of the day there is no point being clever. There’s no point saying the cheese is ready to dispatched if it’s not up to scratch because the customer will reject it. I can grade it highly but it’s ultimately up to the consumer whether they like it or not.” All in all, it’s obvious from my visit that the key to cheese-making is patience. It takes up to five hours to make and could be up to four months before it is ready for consumption. After all that, it’s clear to say you have to go a long ‘whey’ to become leading producers in the world of cheese making. However, it is clear why Joseph Heler is flying the flag for Cheshire and its cheese.

They all carry a walkie talkie radio and calls are shared out, via the control tower next to the main ring. They share the radio channel with doctors and the St John Ambulance Service and they often end up attending incidents together. The day itself can see a variety of different call outs for the vets. Common complaints include mastitis, heat-related conditions and trauma injuries and sometimes they are called out to the odd runaway bullock! David added: “We like to spend the day around the cattle lines where at least one vet will always be found. By staying in close vicinity we ensure that we are always on hand to offer advice and support to the competitors and also answer any queries the general public may have whilst viewing the cattle.” Of course, Nantwich Show is very much a traditional country show and with that, comes an array of different animals for the vets to contend with. There is a good attendance of sheep and poultry and also an array of excellent equine events and even a dog show. David explained: “We can get called out to any four-legged or

feathered friend throughout the day. If the weather is hot, we invariably get called out to treat animals with heat stress. “At the last show in 2006, we were called out to a dog left in a car on the showground, on one of the hottest days of the year. The police were on hand to break into the vehicle but fortunately the owners were located just in time via the PA system, and the dog was released and cooled down. “It had a very lucky escape. It’s worth bearing in mind how stressful and dangerous it can be for pets to be left in these conditions.” As well as providing veterinary cover for the show, the practice continues to run its usual service, providing farm and equine callouts and also running its usual pet surgeries. It does tend to be fairly quiet on that front though, as many farmers and locals themselves are at the show. Call-outs for the vets tend to be busy early morning, then by lunch most people have arrived at the show. The practice then receives an influx of call-outs at afternoon milking, when many farmers return home again. Nantwich Show really is a great social occasion for the farming and rural community of South Cheshire and surrounding counties – there is something for everyone. The Veterinary Group is extremely proud of its firm links to Nantwich Show and indeed, enjoys the prestige that goes with it. Many of the 30-strong vet team from Nantwich Veterinary Group will be attending the show throughout the day. “It is such a fantastic social occasion and it is really great to meet our clients in more of an informal setting, although sometimes we do struggle to recognise one or two farmers as they scrub up so well out of their wellies and overalls,” said David. This year the practice will be holding its usual trade stand at the show. There will be interactive displays, a fun ‘match the pet to the vet’ quiz and pharmaceutical representatives to chat to.

Forty years after taking up the sport, the veteran bird man, who lives in Wrexham, will be demonstrating his expert flying skills and giving youngsters the chance to meet birds of prey up close. He said: “What keeps me going is sheer passion for the birds and for the way of life. “But I’m just as passionate about the education side of my displays. It saddens me that children are getting less involved with the countryside. “The Nantwich Show is a perfect example of a one-day event. People take their time to walk around and often stop to talk”.

Oatstanding treats at the Pavilion O
ne part of the Nantwich and South Cheshire Show not to be missed is the tasty Mornflake Pavilion and Food Hall, which will be packed with some of the most delicious food to be found anywhere in the country – and this year it is bigger than ever.
FLOWERPOT MEN: Derek Oldfield of the Brookhouse Urban Garden Scheme with Bill and Ben in the Mornflake Pavilion in 2006.
Mornflake has been milling oats in the South Cheshire countryside for local farmers since 1675. Today, 14 generations later, the company is still independently owned and managed by the direct descendents of those millers. Mornflake’s experience in oats is unrivalled and it has a delicious and wide ranging portfolio of products from

Deluxe Fruit Muesli and Organic Oats to Macadamia nut and Cranberry Oat Classics. This year it is supporting the show by again sponsoring the main food marquee and pavilion, which is also packed with trade stands, something the company has done for the past four years. It has also had a stand at the show for many years. Mornflake is keen to support the show as it acknowledges it is an important community event. At the show, Mornflake will have a stand in the food marquee and will be showcasing some of its new product launches. One exciting product is Tate & Lyle porridge oats. This sees two of the country’s oldest companies joining forces – Mornflake has been milling since 1675 and Lyle’s Golden Syrup production goes back to 1883.
