Because it’s not just the ladies’ latest fashions which are on parade in the new film, Sex And The City 2, but their interiors style as, with the exception of Samantha, they shake off their singleton status’ and put more time into home-making. “I’ve been cheating on fashion with furniture,” quips clothes-aholic Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) in one of the opening scenes of the movie. Certainly, the New York apartment she and her new husband ‘Big’ (Chris Noth) share on ubertrendy Fifth Avenue, Manhattan plays a key role in the action, and the secrets of its style and décor are revealed in a new book, Sex And The City 2. “I think we spent more time on this space than on anything else in the film,” admits the film’s director, Michael Patrick King. Carrie, who used to live in a

girly flat, has managed to incorporate her trademark quirky touches – lights, antiques sourced from flea markets, rugs and collections of books and treasures – into a space which also has many masculine elements, such as retro furnishings and dark woods. “My thought was that Carrie decorated this with a decorator who had a very keen eye as to what would make Big comfortable,” explains King. “The fun for me and the design team was to figure out how Carrie would interpret her and Big as a couple. It’s not Carrie Bradshaw – her redecorated apartment at the end of the last movie was all colour and feminine, like a little girl’s bedroom. And it’s not Big’s bachelor apartment, either which was sort of modern and shark-like.” Some things haven’t

changed. The girl who sparked a trend for walk-in wardrobes and famously said in the TV series: “I like my money where I can see it, hanging in my closet,” has a king-sized space for designer dresses in the new home. But it’s not simply urban-chic that’s on show when East meets West and Samantha (Kim Cattrall), Charlotte (Kristin Davis), Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) and Carrie, go on a luxurious vacation to Abu Dhabi – which was actually filmed in Morocco.

Pots of style...

M

anufacturers have made great strides over the years to make stylish pots which will withstand the worst of the weather and still look good.

In recent years, garden centres have been flooded with metal containers in both shiny and matt or weathered finishes, along with synthetic pots made from moulded resins which look like granite, stone or terracotta and won’t cost you an

arm and a leg. There are pros and cons for all pots. If you go for unglazed clay, the pots will be porous and therefore plant-friendly, carrying air to the plant roots. However, unglazed terracotta absorbs water from the planting compost and can crack. Metal pots – zinc and titanium are now popular – look great in contemporary settings, but whatever you’re needs, check out your local garden centre or store for a great choice.

What’s your poison? E

No, as the weather warms up and children play in the garden, it may be worth checking the potency of certain, quite common plants which can cause tummy upsets, rashes or other allergic reactions. The Duchess of Northumberland is well versed in identifying poisonous plants, having created the famous Poison Garden, which is among the attractions at Alnwick Castle and Garden, a popular tourist destination in the north of England. “If you are a gardener you will almost certainly have half a dozen of the plants which are in the Poison Garden,” she says. “Aconitum, common monkshood, is an unbelievable killer and the only time you’d ever take it internally is if you were trying to kill off another poison. If it doesn’t find another poison to kill in the body, it will

By Hannah Stephenson kill you.” Bearing tall spikes of helmeted flowers in blues and purples in the summer, it’s poisonous and a skin irritant, causing burning of the lips and mouth, intense vomiting, diarrhoea and spasms. Many of us have laurel in our gardens – it belongs to the family that includes apple, cherry, plum and almond. “When people chop down their laurel hedges, the sap gives off an unbelievably soporific effect and they find themselves falling asleep,” the Duchess explains. “You only have to smell the sap to be affected by it.” Hemlock, foxglove, aquilegia, autumn crocus (colchicum autumnale), laburnum and hellebores are all common plants you might find in your garden or in a hedgerow, and all have different levels of toxicity – you can find them all in the Poison Garden. The amount you would have to ingest to do real damage varies

DANGEROUS: The Foxglove. from plant to plant, says the Duchess, whose knowledge of poisonous plants has inspired a new teenage novel, The Poison Diaries, by Maryrose Wood, in which some of the plants are featured. “There was a case a few months ago where a woman poisoned her former lover and his fiancée in an act of jealous revenge by putting aconitum in a curry. The man died and his fiancée ended up in a coma but survived because she’d eaten less of the curry. People have forgotten these plants’ capabilities.” The Poison Garden, which is licensed to grow cannabis and strychnine to help educate children to the dangers of drugs, also houses common plants you’d find in any garden centre.

Time to make over your smile

SMILE WHITE: Keep your smile healthy by looking after your teeth and gums.

W

hile most of us have considered ways to ensure our faces stay glowing and hair looks lustrous, we often forget our smiles, and these can make the biggest first impression, writes Lisa Haynes. If you’re more likely to be seen sporting a frown than a grin, you may be one of the 45% of

adults unhappy with the appearance of their teeth, according to a recent survey by the British Orthodontic Society. “People are now more conscious of their smiles,” explains Dr Uchenna Okoye, official dentist of 10 Years Younger and director of London Smiling (www.londonsmiling.com). “Make-over shows and magazines have revealed the ‘secrets’ of celebrities that people can follow themselves if they desire. Household names such as Cheryl Cole that have had smile make-overs make others want to do the same.” Now is the perfect time to brush up on teeth tactics in preparation for holiday snap posing. You don’t have to go down the Simon Cowell route and shell out thousands to achieve a kilowatt smile. Get an X Factor grin with clever cosmetic tricks to enhance your pearly whites. If you religiously brush and floss your teeth but they’re still lacklustre, whitening treatments can transform a smile. While a jet wash clean with a dental hygienist will remove surface stains, ‘power’ whitening will lift the colour of your teeth. “Cosmetic dentistry is a choice but professional whitening is the only way to truly change the colour of teeth,” says Dr Uchenna, who uses the Zoom system. Whether you prefer the dentist’s chair or athome whitening using custom-made mouth guards, it’s always advisable to consult your dentist on your treatment options and discuss the ‘right’ white for you.

Check out best of British gardens C

heshire loves its gardens, and they say that every garden is a reflection of its gardener.

Some are showy and ostentatious, others are more whimsical and romantic. Some are earnestly intellectual, others are humble and utilitarian. Some are experimental and creative, others are shy and secretive, making the pleasure of discovery all the more sublime. Cheshire’s range of gardens owe much to its history. Large areas of the county were owned by wealthy families, who created lavish landscapes around their homes. Many are now IMPRESSIVE: The laburnum arch at Norton in the care of the National Trust, Priory. others are still cherished by indiToday, the mild climate and fertile soil of viduals and families who open them to the public. They provide spectacular settings Cheshire nurtures one of the country’s for shows, concerts, equine events, outdoor finest botanical gardens, aromatic fields of lavender, magnificent arboreta and two of theatre, contemporary art and sculpture.

the largest garden centres in the world. But you will find the more unusual gardens to visit in the most surprising places – at Jodrell Bank Science Centre in the shadow of the huge Lovell Telescope, beyond the walls of 12th century Norton Priory, behind Quarry Bank Mill’s Apprentice House where hundreds of poor child millworkers were housed. And often, the most impressive garden of all is the natural one. The Cheshire countryside offers a dazzling year-round show of pure white winter snowdrop walks, thick woodland carpets of spring bluebells, the bright yellow and purple summer patchwork of heather and gorse across the Cheshire Peak District moors and a matchless autumn blaze of beech leaves in the National Trust woodlands of Styal and Alderley Edge.

SCIENCE ENTERTAINER: Johnny Ball.

T

V presenter Johnny Ball is to launch the 2010 Wrexham Science Festival.

Ball, a science entertainer for more than 30 years, will appear at Glyndwr University in Wrexham, on Thursday July 1. His talk – Past Imperfect, Future Fantastic – will focus on the progress being made yearon-year on protecting and caring for the environment. The event is one of more than 50 science talks and demonstrations being held across the 10-day festival (July 1-10).

The programme also includes a talk on wolf behaviour from Shaun Ellis, star of Channel Five documentary The Wolfman, on Thursday July 8, and a presentation based on the groundbreaking book Why Does E=MC². Professor Jeff Forshaw, co-author of the book with Professor Brian Cox, will consider the real meaning behind the iconic sequences which make up Einstein’s famous equation. Events at this year’s festival fall into one of four new themes: Earth and the Universe; Animal World; Human Mind and Body; and Bright Sparks. Other highlights include a preview of a new solar car being constructed at Glyndwr University; and an insight into the university’s involvement in a project to build optical mirrors for the world’s largest telescope which, when completed, will be the size of Wembley Stadium. Drug use is the focus of several talks, covering the prison drug market, a look at how more and more educated people are becoming addicted to over-the-counter medications from their local pharmacy and the impact of drug use on Britain’s young people. The hands-on science spectacular Scientriffic will take place on Saturday July 3, from 10am

until 4pm. This is a perfect family day out for discovering all about science and how things work, with lots of entertaining science shows and demonstrations. Follow the festival online on its Facebook Group or twitter at @wrexhamscifest. ■ For a full list of events or to book online visit the website www.wrexhamsf.com; email wsf@glyndwr.ac.uk; or call 01978 293466 for a copy of the printed programme.

Wonderful Wales way on horseback. Pony trekking is popular throughout Wales. Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty in North Wales are the Clwydian Range and Isle of Anglesey. Traditionally viewed as a land of bucket and spades, donkey rides along the beach and childhood memories of sickly sweet candy floss is Llandudno. This coastal resort and its surrounding countryside remains one of the most underrated tourist spots in Britain and boasts one of the most charming and best preserved Victorian seafronts.

HISTORIC: Conwy Castle.

Enclosed by the headlands of Great Orme and Little Orme, weather permitting, visitors can take in the view from the cable railway or cabin lift. For those wanting a glimpse of Welsh life in the Middle Ages, in the nearby medieval town of Conwy, you will find Conwy Castle, which dates back to the 13th century. Further afield is the town of Betws-yCoed, favoured by hill walkers and mountaineers, and Llangollen, where the International Eisteddfod is held. ■ For further information, visit the website www.visitwales.com.

hinking about taking a break and getting away from it all?

Then why not escape to an area of Britain where beauty comes naturally? With a quarter of the country covered by three National Parks and five Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Wales has much to offer. Each of the National Parks is very different, but all are irresistible to those who love walking and the open countryside. Snowdonia’s rugged landscape, with jagged peaks and wooded gorges, is dominated by the highest summit in England and Wales and is a lure for climbers and hikers. The Brecon Beacons in the south, by contrast, are smooth and curvaceous. You can head for the heights the easy

AFONWEN

Once spring has sprung, florals rear their head as the go-to trend that will flourish right through to autumn and beyond. Designer Christopher Kane even made multicoloured blooms a key theme for his upcoming autumn/winter 2010 collection. But for this season, it was Chanel and Dolce & Gabbana that really put the focus on flower power. While Chanel opted for country twee with ditsy florals and bags and shoes embellished with colourful buds, Dolce & Gabbana showcased sexy glamour with clashing bold rose prints on body-hugging fabrics. You don’t need to have green fingers or a degree in flower arranging to cultivate the catwalk’s blooming summer looks. Use your favourite flower for inspiration and let your print or embellishment echo your personality. Transform your wardrobe in-

power to one big garden party with some fashion floristry. If the word wallflower is just not in your vocabulary, turn to oversized floral prints in multicoloured brights to make an impact. Channel Dolce & Gabbana styling and experiment with clashing floral prints to give your look a catwalk edge, or try layering on look-at-me bold jewellery to boost your flower power potential. Try: F&F at Tesco floral print prom dress, £20; GIVe Fleur floral print skirt, £59, George floral corsage ring, £3. For understated summer style, think flower beds rather than individual blooms. All-over ditsy prints are one of the most flattering of all the florals. If you usually wear a lot of black, pick a multicol-

oured spriggy print that will pop, or go uber-pretty in an ivory piece with just one colour accent such as a pretty pink blossom. Try: Next floral trench coat, £45; Boohoo floral lace bandeau dress, £20; Evans ditsy floral scarf, £10.

BARGAIN BUY: F&F at Tesco floral dress, £20, vest, £5, belt (pack of 2), £2 and bangles, £3 each.

Tomboys take note: Florals don't have to be pretty. Transport your prints to the tropics with vivid Hawaiian style blooms set against palm trees or birds of paradise. Maxi dresses will take on a magical hippy-ish quality in an exotic floral, perfect for packing in your suitcase for sun getaways. Just make sure you don’t skip on the overdose of colour. Try: Phase Eight Martina floral maxi dress, £99; Motel Hibiscus Palm Zoe

oversized hair bows, ladylike day gloves and court shoes. Or keep it modern with unexpected fabrics like washed-out roses on denim. Try: Jane Norman vintage floral skirt, £32; Primark rose print blouse, £10; Fever rose leather belt, £43 at Oli.

FLOWER POWER: Fever, vintage look belt in orange with flower detail, £43 from Oli.
