ummer’s here and it’s time to make sure you’re ready for the challenge – indoors and outdoors.
This year that’s more important than ever as many people opt for a “staycation” – saving money by staying at home over the holidays. So décor that evokes the vibrant colours of those getaway destinations and exotic sundrenched resorts will give you a “get-away-from it-all” feeling no matter what the weather. We’ve rounded up ideas and products that could turn your home into a summer sanctuary for relaxing and entertaining. ■ Sunshine can come and go, but you’ll always feel warmed by its brightness if you paint a wall in a sunny yellow. ■ Dulux has a gorgeous Lemon Chiffon 3, from its Tailor Made Colour collection, which would team well with a chocolatey Rum
Caramel 3. Matt emulsion is £19.49 for 2.5 litres. ■ For a luxurious, decadent look, it’s hard to beat the golden hue of Chinese Rose wallpaper from Brian Yates’s PIP collection at Tangletrees. ■ Its warm glow will brighten the dullest of spaces and the butterfly and rose detail is simply stunning and ideal for a feature wall. The paper is £55 per roll (53cm x 10m) from the website www.mydeco.com ■ Cheap chic: Graham & Brown’s bold yellow sunflower wall art canvas, £25. ■ Turn up the heat: Think bright and add zingy colour to rooms as well as outdoor spaces with accessories that will make you feel the heat is on. ■ Give a kitchen a seasonal face-lift with prettily-coloured red and white or blue and white spotted Summer kitchenware from Next. Three canisters in red, white and blue, £15, and
Summer dinner set, £28. ■ Alternatively, hang gaily-coloured plates on the wall, or jazz up cupboard interiors by painting them a bright colour. ■ If that sofa and chairs have taken a bashing over the winter, breathe new life into them by accessorising with printed cushions. House of Fraser’s cushions work well indoors or out. Summer Stripe, Spot On and Paradise Leaf are £20 each. ■ Extra places to perch are always welcome when you’re entertaining, and hand-embroidered Moroccan pouffes, £115 each from Graham & Green, are suitably colourful. in a choice of cyclamen, turquoise, orange and white. ■ Why not transform a boring detail like coat hooks into a talking point with an unmissable and fun red or white Birdie on a branch coat hook, £50, from Ecocentric?

But designers also play a key role, not just by influencing the way we furnish our interiors, but by producing their homeware ranges to make top quality style available on the high street. Karen Stylianides, deputy editor of House Beautiful, which features 20 top designers in its June issue, says: “Even in these hard economic times it’s possible to celebrate great design in our rooms thanks to the work of people like Sir Terence Conran, Kelly Hoppen, Cath Kidston and a host of others.” Those top interior experts give their tips on creating a stylish home on a budget. Designer Gillis Lundgren helped Ikea to change the way we shop for furniture by inventing the flat-pack, and also designed the best-selling Billy bookcase which celebrates its 30th birthday this year. Today, there are 18 Ikea stores in the UK as well as an online shop, all crammed with well-designed and affordable pieces. Ikea’s interior design expert Mikeal Berryman suggests: “Start on a low-cost makeover by rolling up your sleeves and clearing out your clutter, then work out where you could most use new storage.” Karen Stylianides, deputy editor of House Beautiful, says: "Even in these hard economic times it’s possible to celebrate great design in our rooms, thanks to the work of people like Sir Terence Conran, Kelly Hoppen, Cath Kidston and a host of others." She added: “Create a stunning display with a neat row of inexpensive vases. Unite the display by choosing the same colour or material, for example, a row of glass vases.” Her love of nostalgic design led Cath Kidston to

tip from the experts open her first shop selling vintage fabrics, wallpapers and junk furniture in 1993. Inspired by its success, she went on to create her own wallpaper, bed linen and tableware, making it easy for homeowners to add vintage charm to a room. Kidston’s tip: “Update a wall by painting it with gloss paint or by covering wallpaper with a gloss varnish. This gives a practical finish that’s easy to keep clean. “A patterned oilcloth, an easy way to add colour to a room, is a practical tablecloth choice for everyday dining.” Karen suggests: “Team a new roller or Roman blind, in a fabric chosen to complement your scheme, with existing curtains to give windows an instant new look. Antique Rose Bouquet wallpaper was one of Kidston’s first designs and is £22 a roll. Karen says: “You can also give an old lamp base a quick transformation with a new shade – pleated silk is a key trend this summer – or cover an old shade in a new fabric.”

f ever there was a time to make the most of your outdoor space, it’s this year.
Tight budgets and the threat of viruses, as well as a growing reluctance to stamp a carbon footprint all over the globe, will almost certainly result in more of us enjoying time in our own gardens this summer. Fortunately, the choice of garden furniture and accessories has never been better, and there’s no longer any need to settle for uncomfortable,

What a gem of a find, a real pub, real ales, real food and real people.
I started with a pint of the local Brimstage Brewery Trappers Hat, a very pleasant (and popular) light coloured real ale. The “Fox” as it is called by the regulars, serves two other guest ales alongside Websters Bitter, Theakston Old Peculiar and Best, also selling a range of five lagers, 60 whiskies and 12 wines by the glass. We then decided to choose from the Traditional Lunchtime Menu, featuring six starters followed by the very traditional Mains, such as steak pie, fish and chips with their own beer batter, homemade lasagne, Curry of the Day, local sausages with mash, Chicken, Pork and Vegetarian dishes with other specials. A range of freshly made salads, open sandwiches, ciabbatas and baked potatoes all looked very inviting. as did the range of “to die for” desserts. We had a very enjoyable and reasonably priced lunchtime meal with excellent service from the friendly staff. The bad news is that food is only served at lunchtimes, seven days a week, from 12-2 pm and 2.30 on Sundays. I bet if you go once you’ll go back again. But be sure to book to avoid waiting for a table. The “Fox” is on the A 551 Barnston Road.

The hottest new scents for summer Y
ou’ve picked out a stylish new pair of shades, invested in self-tan and brightened up the contents of your make-up bag. So what should be your next beauty step into high summer?
Get your nose around this season’s hottest new scents. Push your signature fragrance to the back of your dressing table and lighten up with a perfume for the sunshine months ahead. Here’s a guide to wearing scents when temperatures soar. You wouldn’t wear 120 denier opaques in the blistering heat, so why layer up your skin with a super-heavy perfume? Just like our wardrobes, it’s a natural progression to switch perfumes to match the seasons. “The best way to choose a summer fragrance is to avoid those that contain heavy notes like musk, sandalwood, vetiver, vanilla and lavender in the heat,” advises Roni Raithatha from The Fragrance Shop. “Instead opt for peony, rose, lily of the valley, orchid, jasmine and bergamot. Look for apple, peach and orange blossom if you like
SCENT OF SUCCESS: Try Miss Dior Cherie L’Eau, £39 for 50ml. something a little stronger, without being too powerful.” You may also be able to find your usual fragrance in a lighter ‘eau’ edition for summer. Choosing a brand new fragrance can be a daunting experience. About 400 alluring perfumes hit the beauty counters each year, so finding a new signature scent is no mean feat. Important things to remember: ■ Carry out the lunch hour test. Spray your potential scent on to your skin – not paper sample cards – then go for lunch and see if it’s still just as captivating after one hour. ■ Pick your fragrance according
to your personality. One spritz and go? Not in the summer, when rising temperatures can affect the longevity of your scent. Roni has these tips to work your fragrance to its full potential so you can smell sweet in the heat. ■ Don’t spritz the centre of your neck in summer as skin there can be very dry due to sun exposure. If you must, dab either side of your throat, about three inches below your ear, to get a sting-free reaction. ■ Dab perfume on crucial pulse points like the crook of your elbows, your wrists and the backs of your knees.

Madonna and Victoria Beckham may have had no problem bagging the tribal Spicys but those left disappointed by the sell-outs – or the hefty £1,000-plus price tags – can still find catwalk-hot shoes on the high street. “The summer shoe season is awash with statement styles, vibrant colour palettes and gorgeous embellishments with something to match every fashion
trend,” says Patricia Becquereau, chief buyer at Moda In Pelle. Nothing kick-starts a wardrobe like new sandals. The perfect pair will instantly update trousers and give tired dresses and shorts an effortless lift. Get the pedicurist on speed dial. It’s time to give your feet a starring role in this summer’s must-have shoes. Whatever heels you’re hankering
after, no shoe rack is complete without a pair of walk-friendly flat sandals. But if you can’t face flats, get an unfair height advantage by walking tall in towering wedge heels. “Wedges are once again a summer wardrobe staple,” says Patricia. “Look for feminine print styles to wear with floaty fabrics or go for glossy patent brights with leggings for a statement look.”

Afternoon siestas are a way of Mediterranean life. But could a quick 40 winks actually be bad for your health?

here are some things the Continent does better than us, be it fashion, food or simple joie de vivre.

Napping is no exception. The Spanish finish off lunches of Rioja and five-courses with languid, two-hour-long siestas; the French have considered adding ‘nap time’ to their 35hour week; and even Greek offices shut down at lunch. But our long work hours and dogged professional ethics mean that people in the UK have sacrificed a daytime snooze to work the most and sleep the least in all of Europe. One in five Brits sleeps for less than seven hours a night, according to research from the Future Foundation. And all that work and no rest has resulted in a nation of stressed, unhappy, and tired zombies. While you may call them lazy, our kipping neighbours might have had it right from the beginning. The science of napping is such that a quick 40 winks

By Kate Hodal could increase your alertness, productivity, libido and energy – enough to really make a difference to your everyday activities. Winston Churchill was such a fan of naps that he once claimed “you get two days in one” by sleeping an hour at lunch. Whether it’s a power nap at work or a post-lunch snooze, following our Continental counterparts’ napping habits could recharge us enough to convert the UK into a nation of siesta-takers. Anyone who’s ever woken after a short but deep sleep knows the energising boost it can give to the brain and body. That’s because, just as computers and batteries need recharging, so do we, says Sammy Margo, author of the Good Sleep Guide. “Having a little shutdown time in the middle of the day, where you can switch off for 20 minutes, slow your brain down and come back to your tasks more efficiently, is essential,” she explains.
A quick nap has been linked to reduced stress levels, increased libido, improved memory and better overall health. NASA found that when their pilots had a 26-minute nap it boosted work performance by 34%and alertness by 54%. Research by Harvard found that early-afternoon siestas reduced the risk of heart disease by a third. But Margo admits that the jury is still out on whether everybody should be taking a kip after lunch. “While naps are great at re-energising the mind and body, they’re not for everyone,” she says. In fact, older people and those who sleep a lot could find that napping might actually be detrimental to their health. Professor Kevin Morgan, of Loughborough University’s Sleep Research Centre, says that people who nap are probably not getting all the Zzzs they need during the wee small hours and, as a result, are finding their health deteriorates. “The ‘power nap’ – where you sleep for 20 minutes in the afternoon – is an urban myth with flaky scientific foundations,” he says.

Stay safe in the summer sun
LOVE ADULT SHOPPING
By Gabrielle Fagan
ENJOY THE SUN: Be safe by being protected with a high factor suncream. Inset Use citronella candles to help keep insects at bay.
SUMMER’S on its way, and while it brings many delights it can also bring health perils. New research by Boots reveals that nearly half the children in the UK have been sunburnt, and 72% of us believe, wrongly, that it’s unnecessary to wear suncream unless we’re going abroad. Mike Brown, scientific adviser for Boots on sun protection, says: “Children spend lots of time playing outside during the summer months, so they’re particularly at risk of sun damage. “Much of our sun exposure happens before the age of 21, and just one instance of sunburn can double the risk of skin cancer in later life, so it’s essential to protect children.” To prevent burning, cover up with loose clothing and a hat, and avoid going in the sun between 11am and 3pm. Apply sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 for adults, and around 40 for children, half an hour before going out in the sun.
