Find the perfect capsule wardrobe for all
Best way to do it YOU can avoid disasters when you unpack at your destination by packing like a professional. ● Roll your clothes instead of folding – it maximises space in your suitcase and prevents creases. ● Look fantastic in crease-free clothes by inserting a layer of tissue paper between clothes. ● Try rolling up a whole planned outfit together. Then you can pull out a roll of clothes each day and won’t have to search through the suitcase – rummaging can wrinkle clothes. ● Pack most of your socks inside shoes, and your shoes inside socks. ● To avoid excess baggage charges, if you’re going away with a group of friends, work out who can take what. You don’t need four hairdryers. If you’re the same sizes you could even agree to swap clothes and shoes to double what you have to wear. ● Protect against spills by putting cosmetics and toiletries in resealable plastic bags. You’ll know why if you’ve ever had an accident with an exploding shampoo bottle.

f you’re jetting away on happy holidays this summer, don’t ruin the relaxed mood by stressing about your packing.
Whatever your destination, from Skegness to the Seychelles, once you have your capsule holiday wardrobe sussed, it should see you through any occasion – whether it’s sandcastles on the beach or sangria under the stars. Avoid excess baggage charges with our top tips for a stylish getaway in the sunshine. We reveal what to take, and exactly how to pack it to fly away to your destination like a true fashionista. Packing for a fashion-forward vacation doesn’t mean stuffing every sun dress and pair of shoes you own into a case – unless you’re Victoria Beckham or Naomi Campbell. Amanda Slader, chief fashion adviser at John Lewis, has this advice on must-have holiday items to pack: “It gets chilly flying at high altitudes so

stylish suitcase remember to include a pashmina in your hand luggage, which can double-up as a beach top or evening shawl when you arrive. “Ditch your hot and heavy denim and opt for linen trousers, dresses or skirts instead to help keep you cool.” Items which can be worn in the day or glammed up at night are essential for a capsule holiday wardrobe. Look for versatile maxi skirts that can be worn as beach-
wear cover-ups or a dress in the evening. Amanda added: “Cork and cut-out wedges are versatile and lightweight. Perfect for both day and evening outfits.” Crinkle-effect clothing is a great solution to the age-old problem of creases. “Pack less and accessorise, accessorise, accessorise to vary your look with fewer clothes,” says Amanda. Finish off your holiday packing
with a super-stylish suitcase to really get you in the holiday mood. Think bright colours and prints for a fashionista touch at the departure lounge. Once you have your holiday wardrobe hit-list, you don’t want to undo all your hard work by haphazardly cramming everything into your suitcase. Who wants to walk around in crumpled, creased clothing or, worse still, walk around in your birthday suit because all your clothes are covered in suntan oil?

You are my sunshine
N
ever mind the temper- By Gabriel Fagan ature outside – the hottest debate of the summer is whether to sun- ageing is a result of our love of the bathe or not. sun, and we’re constantly warned
Over the summer months many of us will bare all in search of a golden glow, which we’re convinced will make us look younger and healthier. The trouble is, scientists now believe that up to 80% of skin
that the sun’s cancer-causing properties are contributing to the spiralling number of cases of skin cancer in the UK. There are 100,000 new skin cancer cases diagnosed each year, according to charity Cancer Research UK, and around 1,800 people a year die from malignant melanoma – the most aggressive skin cancer. But recently other experts have begun to warn that taking sun protection to extremes may deprive us of vital vitamin D, and damage our long term health. Vitamin D is es-
sential to help our bodies absorb enough calcium for healthy bone growth and a serious lack of it can lead to brittle bones, and even rickets in children. In addition, recent research has suggested that higher levels of vitamin D might help to protect the body from colon, breast, prostate and other cancers. Celebrities illustrate the growing divide on sun bathing. Some stars like Madonna rarely expose themselves to the sun, Nicole Kidman generally safeguards her porcelain complexion by covering up, but other top celebrities resolutely remain – or promote the look of being – sun worshippers. It’s all about achieving a healthy balance in our relationship with the sun, says Mike Brown, Boots Suncare Scientific Adviser. “I think it comes down to common sense. We are trying to get a message across to those who never protect their skin from the sun that they should definitely use sunscreen, but we don’t want to scare those who are generally sensible
BATHERS: Most of us enjoy will be hoping to bask in the sunshine at some yime during the summer. about sun protection into becoming obsessive.” He added: “I have never seen any evidence that people who use sunscreen are vitamin D deficient. Also, I think the dangers of too much sun are far greater in terms of the effects on the skin than the consequence of having too little and the effect on vitamin D levels. “Vitamin D can be absorbed through some foods, as well as being made in the body after exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun. I think the jury’s out on whether the vitamin D made in the skin is essential, or is just a back-up mechanism.” Although there’s no conclusive evidence pointing to how much sun is
needed to generate vitamin D, Brown says that research by Newcastle General Hospital estimated that the amount of sunlight required to generate an acceptable level of vitamin D for the average person is around five to 15 minutes exposure three to four times a week on the hands and face. “If you’re concerned about vitamin D you can take a supplement, or include in your diet more foods rich in vitamin D such as oily fish, cod liver oil, dairy products, eggs and fortified cereals.” And if you’re going to enjoy this summer’s sun, Brown advises you not to underestimate the power of those rays, even if you stay in Britain and don’t venture abroad.

In the O night garden
ur gardens may look vibrant in the daytime, but at night they take on a different air as the fading light changes the colours, tones and fragrance of our outdoor space and certain plants come into their own. Garden centres have seen a rise in night-blooming plants, according to new research, showing we are making the most of our evenings outdoors. Almost a third of us do gardening (not just watering)
after dark and 70% socialise in the garden after dark, according to a survey of more than 3,000 people, commissioned by Grant’s Whisky. With this in mind, award-winning gardener and TV presenter, Chris Beardshaw, has created three blueprints for the perfect garden after hours. Chris said: “The garden is often at its most vibrant and intense as the evening slips into night. The fragrance is enhanced in many cases and the quality of light, either from
the setting sun or the moon, adds an extra dynamic character. “Simply adding a few nightblooming plants, subtle lighting and the use of white or light coloured materials will reflect the moonlight and make a real difference to the pleasure you can get out of your garden after hours.” Good plant choices include the pure white Cosmos ‘Purity’, Digitalis purpurea ‘Alba’, the white foxglove, and Cerastium Tomentosum ‘Silver Carpet’ (snow-in-summer).
NIGHT LIGHT: Maximise your garden with nightblooming plants.

Design manager, Fionnuala Johnston, said: “Catwalk fashions have always inspired interior trends, but we’re finding that nearly 60% of women are drawn to interior style trends that resemble their taste in fashion. “The gorgeous floral prints that are around this summer lend themselves to this trend perfectly. S
uddenly it’s cool to care about the planet and to worry that wasting our natural resources could trash the environment.
But that concern shouldn’t be limited to the tropical rain forests and polar bears, because our homes should be eco-friendly too, according to the ‘greenies’. That’s fine, but you still want your home to look great. No one wants to sacrifice style and fill rooms with grungy, dull objects simply made from reprocessed cardboard or car tyres just so they can claim to have done their bit for the Earth.
It is possible to find great green design but discovering what’s hot and what’s not for eco homes – and not paying a fortune for it – can be difficult. So expert help is needed. Judith Wilson, stylist and interiors writer, isn’t just an expert on natural living, she’s also following a green agenda in renovating her own home. She understands that style gurus want eco chic but acknowledges: “For the design-conscious individual, there’s still the worry that going natural means compromising on style and choice. “Thankfully, it doesn’t. High street stores and specialist suppliers are falling over themselves to provide natural products, ran-

Your place in the sun
GET THE LOOK: Blue, yellow, pink and green striped chairs and a parasol – the Silhouette range from John Lewis could turn a patio into a ‘far away’ sanctuary.
H
ave you ever yearned for a relaxation zone and a special place to entertain? Well, the answer could be right outside your back door.
Patios this year are a stylish hotspot which should be furnished with the same care as your home. Banish wobbly chairs and saggy parasols in favour of the latest outdoor furniture and accessories, much of which isn’t just ultra comfortable but also weatherproof – so you can avoid the tedious chore of covering it up or lugging it into the shed in the winter. With the wealth of fabulous ranges around this season it’s easy to truly transform a space into an ‘outdoor room’ that you’ll never want to leave – no matter what the weather. Armchairs, daybeds and even coffee tables and bars are the new, indulgent additions to the conventional patio dining sets and loungers. And as the housing market slumps, property expert, Alison Cork, a consultant for TK Maxx, points out: “A well designed and presented outside space can add up to 15% to the value of a property, and will undoubtedly be a selling factor in the summer months, not to mention a ‘quality of life’ investment. “People increasingly regard the

garden as another room in the house and are wisely furnishing it to the same high standards as their indoor rooms.” Fabien Perez, buyer for B&Q Leisure, agrees that the trend this season is for “people to recreate a cosy, indoor feel outside. They’re looking for pieces to make a statement – just as they would indoors – with oversized furniture
pieces, such as large garden beds which are perfect for creating a den or living room feel.” As our climate is generally warmer, the patio need no longer be saved for summer. Perez says: “Highly durable materials such as all weather rattan mean the majority of new pieces can be left outdoors, so people can easily take advantage of warm days at any time of year. “Also new developments in lighting, such as solar, allow people to enjoy an outdoor space long into the night.” And if the credit crunch is biting on your budget, making a garden a desirable destination instead of splurging on a holiday could be a wise move, according to Nick Fox of Housing Units, a Manchester furniture retailer. He says: “Our typical customer spends around £3,000 on an annual summer holiday and once that money is spent, it’s spent. But garden furniture – which costs a fraction of that amount – lasts many summers and could be a wise investment. It’s a choice we’re predicting many people will take this year.” So now summer’s on the way, do not deny your garden – turn it into a retreat where you can escape from the daily grind and snooze, chill and socialise to your heart’s content.

Solution to your vein problems
S
parkling eyes are attractive but according to Kevin Lewis, former president of the College of Optometrists, they can be the first thing to suffer as the weather gets warmer.
Advertiser's announcement VEIN Solutions is a Cheshire based, private service specialising in modern techniques for the treatment of varicose and thread veins. It is run by Sameh Dimitri, who is an experienced consultant vascular surgeon. He offers the latest techniques in treating veins without the need for general anaesthesia. Vein Solutions offers a walk in... walk out service, by using minimally invasive procedures such as endovenous laser therapy (EVLT), foam sclerotherapy and radio frequency ablation of veins (VNUS). Vein Solutions also offers treatment of thread veins with the use of microsclerotherapy and veinwave techniques. All treatments are undertaken under local anaesthetic in about one hour. A few patients will still require open surgery for the treatment of varicose veins under general anaesthesia. ● For more details, call Vein Solutions on 0800 0431997.
“Hayfever can make eyes tired and red. So if you’re suffering, go to the pharmacy and get over-the-counter drops to help you out. If you’re on any other medication, make sure you ask the advice of the pharmacist. “Many people also find that excess light makes their eyes water and itch. If you are ‘photo sensitive’ then make sure you get good protection from sunglasses.
SUMMER EYES: Make the most of your eyes and at the same time keep them healthy.
”Look out for spectacles that have a complete UV block. Often cheaper frames don’t have any block at all, which means your pupils will open up under the lens and let in ultraviolet rays, doing them more harm than good. ”Sunglasses are very important because the sun’s rays can do long term damage to the eyes, causing everything from burnt eyelids to small tumours. ”Dry eyes are another problem in hotter weather conditions. If you’re suffering, get artificial tears from the pharmacist to keep them from drying out.” ● For more information visit www.college-optometrists.org

SUPER SLIMMER: Laura is full of praise for SureSlim. Inset, before she lost weight.
It is based on scientific research into nutrition, metabolic processes, and hormone regulation. SureSlim corrects your glucose metabolism, so you can lose weight fast and for life. All SureSlim clients have a comprehensive blood test, which looks at you as an individual. The blood test is not a food intolerance test. This is a fasting blood test, testing your full blood count, liver and kidney function, lipids, glucose, and thyroid function. A copy of your blood test will be provided for your GP to ensure your notes are always up to date. The SureSlim doctor screens your blood test for abnormalities and the results of your test are used to design a weightloss programme for you. Using your blood test results and an analysis of your medical history and medication, SureSlim designs an eating plan to correct your glucose metabolism and balance your hormone levels so that you can lose weight and get healthy. Can’t colour...won’t colour By Gabrielle Fagan
I
EXTRA LARGE: Multiyork's Imogen sofa in ivory coloured fabric, £1745 and Alpine chair in a striped beige, £529.
’ve coped with lots of decisions in my life, from the big ones like which house to buy and which school to send my children to, through to small but vexing ones like, ‘Does my bum look big in this?’ But if one thing’s guaranteed to reduce me to a gibbering indecisive wreck, it’s a paint chart. Faced with lyrical but baffling names like Subtle Ivory, Jasmine Mist, or Both Barrels (the latter’s green in case you were wondering) I retreat defeated and stagger away with cans of boring magnolia yet again. It’s comforting to realise that the nation’s with me and drowning in complete ‘colour confusion’ too. We’re stubbornly defying the designers and interiors experts urging us that colour is back in fashion and a must-have for homes, and resolutely sticking to what we know – bland and neutral. New Dulux research reveals that one in four homes in the UK have a neutral or ‘noncolour’ scheme, and the use of
those shades has doubled over the last 10 years. Around 55% of householders are choosing to live in homes decorated in creams and whites even though nearly half of us actually regard them as ‘boring, non colours’. It’s partly because we’re so unused to living without sight of a bright shade or hue that we’re too nervous to change, according to Louise Smith, colour expert for Dulux. She says: “The longer you live in bland rooms the harder it is to visualise them any other way – it’s almost like colour phobia has set in for many people.” There’s another reason – we’re apparently letting our heads (and bank balances) rule our decor hearts. We’re worried that using colour – or worse making mistakes with it – will make our homes less of an investment, which is of particular concern in current, tricky economic times. Louise says: “The British have had a decade of TV programmes encouraging and telling them to keep their homes ‘neutral’ as the best way to get a quick and easy sale. “That’s helped to make
people increasingly frightened to express their own personalities through decoration, because subconsciously they’re viewing their homes as a commodity or potential sale.” But in reality, many of us would secretly love to splash colour around, and take a spin on a rainbow colour wheel. The paint company’s research also EMBRACING revealed that only 4% of COLOUR: The Way We people believe cream or Live With Colour by Stafford Cliff off-white reflects their and Gilles De Chabaneix, true personality, while published by Thames and 38% of us yearn to use Hudson, priced £19.95. blue, and 32% would love to blush pink or even of cream-decorated homes.” paint the town red. If it’s well- our home, and making a space used, colour actually makes a more enjoyable to live in.” So it’s high time to beat that home more attractive and memorable to a prospective phobia with the help of our buyer who’s probably viewing experts. CLASSIC STYLING: Art of Elegance bridal collection for Bhs by the designer Elizabeth Emanuel, £495.

Elizabeth Emanuel, who designed the dress with her then husband David, may be associated with exclusive couture gowns, but she has recently launched a bridal range for the high street. Emanuel’s Art of Elegance collection for Bhs is proof that you don’t have to go bankrupt to buy your dream dress – each of the four signature-style gowns is £495. “My couture gowns normally sell for many thousands of pounds which makes them out of reach of the general public,” she says. “It’s been a dream of mine to be able to create a range of wedding gowns that reflect my couture collection in both quality and design but at a more accessible price.” Designer gowns – without the hefty price tags – are also at your fingertips at Debenhams, which has an impressive range of big name bridalwear. Creations from catwalk favourites Julien Mac-
By Lisa Haynes donald, Ben de Lisi and Pearce Fionda are all available, starting from just £120 for a skirt, and £200 for a gown in store or online. So before you blow your entire wedding day budget on your dress, check out your favourite stores for designer wow factor on your big day. Choosing a fashionable silhouette and picking the right dress for your shape will leave you looking a million dollars – even if you haven’t spent it! Whether you dream of a traditional meringue-style gown with all the trimmings or crave something with clean and simple lines, there’s a bridal gown to suit all tastes. But if you want to walk down the aisle inspired by catwalk trends, Clare Totman, buyer for Evans Bridal, has this advice on capturing of-themoment bridal looks for summer 08. “This season marks a welcome return to femininity – the mood is romantic and soft. “Designers have played with a shorter, full-skirted shape as well as creating an elongated silhouette, using a sleek bodice and floor sweeping hemlines.” If your big day is a summer event,

choose a prom style dress or shorter lengths. Rachele Hayman, Bhs wedding buying director, adds: “The taste for long dresses is changing; shorter styles are more prominent and a perfect choice for any summer wedding.” If you don’t want to flaunt your legs, turn to the back – this season’s hottest body part. Sexy low-cut backs are a show-stopping alternative for contemporary brides, and will give the congregation something to admire while you’re reading your vows. This year’s styles are sleeker and sit close to the body, skimming your curves, so look to dresses that are bias cut, mermaid, or soft A-line skirts. If you’re not a super slim bride, the high street can also deliver. Catering for sizes 14-32, Evans recently launched a new bridal collection featuring statement dresses and flattering two-pieces for plus sizes. But whatever your size, choosing styles to flatter your figure can give you a real confidence booster on the big day. Full skirts will draw attention to your bottom half, while full sleeves and fancy bodices will emphasise your top half. If you’re curvy, make the most of it and go for a classic hourglass shape and a simple neckline. cessories are key to pulling your desired look together for top-to-toe perfection. Once you’ve finally chosen your ideal dress, shopping for shoes, headwear, and accessories will give your gown an added touch of individuality. “The choice of accessories should depend entirely on the image you would like to create,” advises top designer Caroline Castigliano. “Accessories are vital to creating the overall look and should compliment the dress perfectly. Many brides want to create a more traditional look in the day and can do this using a shrug to cover shoulders, but when the evening comes they are increasingly looking for a much more glamorous look more of a red carpet statement,” she says. “By adding a sash softly tied at the waist, and a careful choice of jewellery and accessories she can completely change her look.” If you want to go traditional, veils are still a popular choice for big weddings but tiaras and fascinators are now equally as coveted by brides who want a modern twist. Before you start your accessories shopping spree, don’t forget the old custom of wearing ‘something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue’.

Countdown to a perfect day THERE’S no reason why you should do all the preparation for your wedding alone. Family, friends, bridesmaids and the best man should all be willing to give a hand.
So sit down, digest the list of jobs involved, and then... delegate. With 12 months to go to the Big Day set the date, start to compile a ‘wedding file’ and collect magazine articles and other ideas. Decidewhattypeofwedding you want. Will it be religious or a civil ceremony, formal or informal? Will you get married at home or abroad? For weddings abroad you will need to book now and sort out the essential documentation. Decide on bridesmaids, best man etc, and draw up a realistic budget; decide who will pay for what. Work out how many guests you can afford, who you want to invite, and draw up a preliminary list. Choose your gown, bridegroom’s outfit and outfits for attendants; book the caterers, the photographer and/or videographer and entertainment.
Make your appointment with a reputable hairdresser and start experimenting with styles. Order the cake; decide on a florist and order your bouquets; choose your flowers and balloons and discuss design; plan the honeymoon; discuss wedding service details with the minister or registrar; book the cars; have another hair consultation and this time take a picture of your gown and headdress. Three to six months before order your wedding stationery; compile and register your gift list; choose the rings; finalise the honeymoon plans, including visas and vaccinations; check that all relevant documentation has been received by your tour operator if you are marrying abroad; check banns or licence applications have been made or notice given; send out invitations. One month to go finalise the guest list and draw up a seating plan; confirm guest numbers with caterers and arrangements with all other suppliers; have a final fitting of outfits; a rehearsal of the wedding service; have your hen and stag parties.
