Thompson remembers the exact date—June 10, 2010—when she bought the building on Bruce Street South, Thornbury’s main street, and started a new chapter in her life. The Cheese Gallery became a quick success. Customers, locals and tourists all fell in love with the shop’s unique offerings. From showstopping artisanal cheeses and delectable cookies, cakes, tarts and pastries, to teas and coffee and locally-made cider, The Cheese Gallery has something to please every palate. By popular demand, the cafÊ now offers light lunch fare, and yes, all of the selections make good use of the cheeses Thompson sells.

Thompson remembers the exact moment the idea that became The Cheese Gallery sprung to mind. “I was hiking with my girlfriends when it came to me: great cheese, good wine and delectable chocolates are perfectly paired with one another,â€? she explains. “So I asked myself, ‘why not open a place that marries the three’? I’d open a gourmet cheese shop and cafĂŠ.â€? She was confident The Cheese Gallery would find a perfect home in Thornbury, a creative community populated by galleries, artisan shops, restaurants, coffee roasters, bakeries, and craft cider makers. It’s a place where the imaginative spirit flourishes and customers and merchants value getting to know each other

I
am excited to introduce the spring issue of Invest In Style to our readers. Amidst the outbreak of COVID-19, we discussed whether or not to even print this magazine, but decided in the end that we would be optimistic about the summer and hope that our readers will still enjoy the images and stories we have to share. This issue is no doubt the most informative and thoughtprovoking issue we have ever produced. Spring is, by definition, the season of rebirth and that alone makes it exciting and emotionally stimulating. It also reminds us of what lies ahead – summer. This issue is overflowing with stories and captivating images of summer. These articles will warm you, excite you, and hopefully open your eyes to the amazing success and possibilities of the various communities that Chestnut Park is proud to be a part of. The spring issue brings you evocative images from events in Muskoka, including Summer Water Sports, affectionately known as SWS, and amazing fly board photographs, as well as the beauty, charm and atmospheric feel of the photos that were submitted by readers and selected for our First Annual Summer Memories Photography Contest. I am certain that anyone looking at our winning picture will imagine themselves in that field of sunflowers where we can feel the warmth of the sun and the texture of the sunflowers as we brush by. This issue is also full of fun, and the many events and experiences that are available to us in Southern Ontario: from

wine tasting in lovely Prince Edward County (more commonly referred to as PEC), to the endearing sights and sounds of Port Carling, Muskoka’s oldest community, to the mysterious (oh what stories it could tell) Nottawasaga Island Lighthouse in Collingwood, to sailing in Lake Joseph (affectionately known as Lake Joe) and, finally, to the exciting Haliburton Craft Brew Fest, where many of Ontario’s microbreweries present their featured brews in a festival atmosphere. This spring issue is brimming with articles including an interview with Mike Holmes’ daughter, Sherry Holmes, interior design, art, and the craftsmanship of bespoke eyewear maker, Maison Bonnet. As this spring issue of Invest In Style heads to press, the world is coping with the outbreak of the novel coronavirus. The virus has taken lives, restricted travel, and has had a negative impact on the world’s economy. Please remember everyone’s health is most important right now; we can only enjoy what we have if we are well. I hope that this issue reminds you of the wondrous world in which we are fortunate enough to live, and that the perpetual rebirth that we associate with spring will also bring well-being to our troubled world. We hope our readers will enjoy the images and articles in this issue, with a mind to where they could go and what they might do in the (hopefully near) future.

The New Canadian Housing Identity Spenders, Stayers and Speculators
Low interest rates, shocking levels of consumer debt, luxury builder bankruptcies and surging house prices. These stories play a starring role in Canada’s real estate market. But look closer and these stars tell a different story altogether. One that has nothing to do with predicting home prices and everything to do with the more intangible question – who are we?
Spenders Canadians are saving less than their neighbours to the south, which is surprising given the belief that Canadians are more fiscally conservative than hard charging “bigger is better” Americans. Have years of consuming American media finally changed our spending habits? Not necessarily. Food, housing, and car expenses are simply greater in major Canadian cities than in most American cities. What’s more, the cost of post-secondary education is getting perilously close to the unsustainable numbers we see at high ranking American colleges. In fact, education, and not avocado toast, is why the biggest cohort of bankruptcy filers are millennials. Critics claim that it’s consumerism that really is at the heart of the failure to save. Not necessarily so, says Nigel R. D’Souza, Investment Analyst for Veritas Investment Research. He asserts that the staples of life - food, housing and school debt - are more expensive, adjusting for inflation, than in the previous 20 years. Salaries, however, haven’t kept pace and the growth in the gig economy reflects the fact that many are underemployed 8
The idea of Canadians as savers who are gainfully employed and have access to free education has changed. We are now holders of both “good” (if there is any?) and bad debt.

instead of kicking their children out of the nest, parents are building homes so that their adult children and respective partners (and, as the boomers hope, grandchildren) will all be living under one roof with them. Canadians of all generations are no longer fleeing the coop which contributes to the chicken-and-egg issue plaguing Canadians who may want to downsize or move out – they can’t sell because there’s nowhere to go. And there’s nowhere to go because they can’t sell.

Stayers Real Estate Cassandras and behavioural economists have long warned of a looming oversupply of McMansions owned by a large aging population. The warning went as follows: fashionable McMansions will go out of style and crash in pricing. The aging population will find McMansions too expensive and too physically difficult to maintain. They’ll all want to cash out at the same time, but there won’t be an equally large demographic able to afford a McMansion, thereby pushing down housing prices.
Instead of kicking them out of the nest, parents are now offering their homes so their children, and any partners or grandchildren, can live under one roof.

Summer Water Sports, Canada’s largest water sports company, offers everything water-related, from general waterfront marina services, to boat rentals and tours, personal watercraft and water ski instruction, and four weekly lakeside ski shows.
F
or many, Muskoka is synonymous with tradition. It could be the burger shop you always hit on the highway north, the fishing lures your grandfather used, or staring at that map of the lake that’s been hung on the wall for decades. For many, these traditions are what make the area special. Summer Water Sports (affectionately known as SWS by locals and cottagers) embodies that love of tradition. For six decades, SWS has provided summer entertainment on the lakes, whether through their water ski schools or the ski shows that have thrilled guests for generations. Now SWS has grown to include three marinas, several pop-up businesses at their Minett location and even a location on Grand Cayman Island. They still perform their annual ski shows at Clevelands House Resort in Minett, Windsor Park in Bala, and at the Muskoka Wharf in Gravenhurst, as well as operating their schools out of Clevelands House, the Lake Joseph Club and Deerhurst Resort in Huntsville.

The roots of SWS can be traced back to 1960, when a group of volunteers started Summer Ski. The event consisted of a group of talented young water skiers putting on a show for onlookers at Clevelands House, including guests of the resort and curious nearby cottagers. The watershow continued, more or less unchanged, until the mid-90s, when it was greatly expanded by Phil Harding (the current Mayor of Muskoka Lakes Township), and renamed Summer Water Sports. Val, a fifth generation Muskokan who grew up on Lake Rosseau, has watched the SWS shows since childhood. Geordie and Val met while he was skiing with SWS and she was a server at the former Pinecrest restaurant in Port Carling. In 2005, the Newlands family purchased Summer Water Sports; with three children who learned to ski with SWS and then went on to work for the company, it was a perfect match. At the time, Geordie (the oldest of the three siblings), was just finishing his degree at the University of Guelph, so he became the operator of SWS. From there it’s been a slow but steady process of expansion. Charlie Elliot, fly board instructor and performer.
The first move was to acquire Wallace Marina in Minett. “It was definitely a learning process for us but we gradually figured it out,” says Val. The business has expanded accordingly. From storing 45 boats in their first year to a current capacity of several hundred. In 2018, they added the Boatworks marinas on both the Lake Muskoka and Lake Rosseau sides of Port Carling. Established in 1925, Boatworks (now renamed SWS Boatworks) offers everything from gas and boat servicing to a surf shop where you can buy swimsuits and wakeboards. In total, SWS employs about 80 people during peak summer capacity. Val says the biggest growth areas of the business are their cottage clinics. The clinics bring the ski school right to your dock, with everything you need to get started, including a boat, equipment and an instructor. The biggest trend in watersports these days is wakesurfing, which requires a special type of boat to throw the ideal wake. Val says that’s been a major draw during recent summers, as few people have access to the right type of boat. SWS also plays host to a number of pop-up shops out of the Minett location beside Clevelands House, including a yoga studio and a bakery. This year they plan to add an LCBO outlet to their location there. As the business has grown, so has the Newlands family, and they now have two boys of their own. With summer rapidly approaching, a new generation of the Newlands family, and Muskokans, will have the chance to experience what’s made SWS a mainstay of cottage country for more than half a century.

Uncork Canada
Now in its 13th year, Uncork Canada offers the public an opportunity to sample the very best of wines from all of Canada’s wine-producing regions.”
P
icton is the heart of one of Canada’s emergent wine regions. Drive through Prince Edward County and you’ll find a bountiful landscape of vineyards. It makes sense that Picton is home to the All Canadian Wine Championships (ACWC), one of the world’s largest and oldest competitions of its kind. After the official judging period is complete, the public is invited to judge the wines for themselves at Uncork Canada. “The All Canadian Wine Championships were created to promote Canadian wineries and the wine industry,” explains organizer Bev Carnahan. “Each year the ACWC receives over 1,400 wines from several hundred of the top vineyards across the nation. While the majority come from British Columbia, we have lots of entries from Ontario as well as less traditional wine-making regions like Quebec and the Maritimes.” Now in its 13th year, Uncork Canada offers the public an opportunity to sample the very best of these entrants – 700 wines from all of Canada’s wine-producing regions. “It’s a really unique tasting event because all of the wines are award-winners and most are currently unavailable in the LCBO,” says Carnahan. “There’s only a single bottle here of each wine, which means only 15 people can sample any given one.
That makes it special, and the event becomes a treasure hunt, with people searching out wines they want to try.” “And it’s not just wines. Port Carling PHOTOGRAPHY BY TAYLOR NULLMEYER
One of the most coveted addresses in the heart of Muskoka’s cottage country, Port Carling is home to hundreds of families, year-round, and thousands more during summer months. Incorporated as a village in 1896 (population 100), Port Carling, Muskoka’s oldest community, is the largest urban centre in the Muskoka Lakes Township.

T
wo-and-a-half hours north of Toronto, Port Carling hugs the shores of Mirror and Silver lakes. In the heart of its downtown, boat locks that welcomed the first steamships in the early 1900s, join the larger lakes Muskoka and Rosseau
– hence Port Carling’s nickname, Hub of the Lakes. Known locally as The Wall, a giant photo mosaic of the RMS Sagamo entering the Port Carling locks in the early 1900s, covers the side of the Muskoka Emporium. The 111’ by 45’ mosaic, made up of more than 9,000 images, tells the story of the daily lives of residents of the village’s first century, from 1860-1960. 22
Family homes, from modest waterfront cottages to new build luxury retreats on private islands, provide residents and guests with peaceful settings (think morning yoga on the dock) and a laid-back, community atmosphere. Well-kept boathouses – many with guest quarters – dot hundreds of kilometres of pristine shoreline. Downtown, Port Carling’s wide sidewalks and dock-side cafés invite leisurely afternoon strolls. Upscale restaurants, art galleries and boutiques, as well as brand-name retailers and ice cream shops, welcome residents and visitors. There’s something here for everyone including summer camps for kids, art and music

festivals, and theatre and musical events in the new community hall. From July to September, the Port Carling Farmer’s Market sets up every Thursday in Hannah Park. Muskoka Lakes Museum, on James Bartleman Island Park, downtown Port Carling, opens from Victoria Day through to Thanksgiving. This year, you’re invited to attend opening celebrations on May 16, 2020. Local water sports include paddle boarding, kayaking, and rowing (lessons as well as rentals). Nearby, hiking trails meander through the ruggedly beautiful Canadian Shield. Huckleberry Rock Lookout Trail, in Milford Bay, lets you stand on some of the oldest rocks in the world and watch the sun set on the little islands that dot the lakes. While Port Carling is best known as a summer playground, the natural wonder of the area also makes it ideal for winter activities. When frozen, the lakes invite skating, snowmobiling, and shoreline walks impossible in the summer.

Mercedes-Benz A250 4Matic Hatch
A sporty new city-friendly Mercedes, the A250 4-Matic Hatch sets a new standard in compact luxury. Packed with an amazing array of new technology and features, it has a stunningly attractive ultra-modern cabin that’s absolutely three-point star worthy. Hatch is only sold north of 49, on our side of the Atlantic, and there’s a sedan version, which is sold in the US, called the A220. Hey Mercedes” will introduce you to MBUX, a new voice-activated multimedia system with intelligent learning software that’s designed to provide a more natural and personalized connective experience. Follow up with “I’m cold,”for example, and it will trigger an increase in cabin temperature. The feeling of spaciousness within the cabin and its solidity on the road are remarkable and defy the A250’s exterior dimensions. A large panoramic sliding sunroof, which is a standard feature, also adds to that roomy cabin feel.

Mercedes engineers are masters of the comfortable ride and the A250 comes with a sophisticated fourlink rear suspension. Its rear axle is also mounted in a subframe that’s isolated from the body with rubber bushings, to further dampen driveline and road vibrations. A large dual-screen replaces both the conventional instrument cluster and multi-media display. It seems to float atop a sweeping dashboard that wraps into the doors and has a series of dramatically large circular turbine-like air vents. Features on the twin 10.25inch (26.04 cm) digital displays in my test A250 were selected with steering wheel controls or via a centre console touch pad. In addition, it came with an (LED) ambient lighting system throughout the cabin with up to ten “colour world” selections that were super cool. In fact, all lighting in my A250 was the LED type, including the headlights. On the utility side, the A250 offers a very respectable 370 litres of cargo space that can be expanded to 1,210 litres when the rear seats are folded. The expanded cargo area has a level floor with a sturdy cover over the spare wheel. Occupants of the front seats have a surprisingly generous amount of headroom despite the panoramic roof. Life is more constrained in the rear seats, yet they still provide useable space for two adults.

A pair of shift paddles strategically positioned behind the upper steering-wheel spokes allows you to manually upshift and downshift the 7-speed DCT transmission with just a flick of your fingers.

ECO Start/Stop system automatically shuts off the engine at stoplights and other idle situations, to save fuel and reduce emissions.
The A250 may not be the hottest hatch on the market, but it can dart to 100km/h in about six seconds, so it’s certainly no slouch. Power comes from a turbocharged 2.0 litre engine that can produce 221 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque and it’s mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. A super-hot (300+ hp) version of “Hatch,” from the AMG division and called the A35, should arrive here in early 2020, if there’s a greater need for speed. The 4Matic all-wheel system is another standard feature on A250, in Canada. It’s a fully variable torque distribution system that provides sportier drive characteristics when
a driver selects the “dynamic” drive mode, and includes power take-off to the rear axle. On the safety front, A250 also has the very latest driving assistance system from Mercedes called Active Brake Assist. It’s designed to prevent or mitigate the consequences of a rear-end collision with another vehicle or an impact with crossing pedestrians or cyclists, by providing advance warning and automatic braking. As they say, really good stuff can come in small packages. And that certainly holds true for the Mercedes-Benz A250 4Matic Hatch.

In Conversation with Winnie Truong
Winnie Truong’s large-scale drawings are highly conceptual, imbued with both sensual and strange elements, and charged with emotion. Channelling a surreal world, Truong’s work is playful yet powerful – meticulous, layered and laboured over until she deems the energy just so. What began as a series of entangled, furry, distinctly female figures has evolved into paper-cut sculptures suspended in ripe, botanical gardens, and now in movement through stop-motion film loops. The Toronto-based artist’s most recent show, Supernatural, at Ottawa’s artist-run contemporary art gallery, SAW, featured a survey of different bodies of work – from line drawing to animation and installation – all of them showcasing Truong’s ability to push the possibilities of scale.

What spoke to you about this medium? Drawing isn’t really a stream that’s explicitly focused on in any sort of art education, so I’m fascinated with the medium and its potential to come from a place that is outside of that western art canon – I can create these things that are unburdened by that history, in a way.
How has becoming a mother changed your creative process? Some of the work has transitioned into cut paper figures; it’s about these women who are birthing their own environments, and bursting with botanical elements. So I think in a way it’s been a metaphor for my experience.
What led you toward sculptural work? I want to create more immersive spaces; my work is about pushing the boundaries of paper and drawing as a medium and seeing its possibilities beyond the static image. What was intended as more standing sculptures actually became these collages that really play with light and shadow. This work could exist in so many different formations as I’m laying down the paper cut pieces and weaving them in and out of different compositions, and that’s why the work has also transitioned into animation as of recently. A lot of these movements were just asking to be captured in these short little looping animations. > Many Hands Keep it Together and Pull it Apart, chalk pastel and coloured pencil.
What is it about hair that attracted you to that subject matter? We all deal with it in some capacity, which is a great basis to have all these conversations about gender construction and society’s code of use about femininity. The hair is less accoutrement; it’s this beautiful, refined thing when coifed but it also has this abject quality. Especially when it comes out in the “wrong places” on the female form. A lot of the work is about reversing the gaze with these women – creatures – in various poses but turned away from the viewer. We’re re-confronting the body through this more empowered stance.
What is the process like for you? It became the crux of my practice to create something that is monumental and also fragile on this really thin, paper substrate, especially with the tools of coloured pencil speaking to nostalgia. The process starts with a chalk pastel base that’s like an under painting and then it’s just built up line work and this obsessive mark making. It’s a lot of compounded lines with different colour vibrations. Every strand that I’m creating on the page is a direct movement of the pencil. And just like you would coif or “do” hair, there’s a lot of jugging and minor preening involved as well.

How do you cope with creative blocks? For me, it’s been about switching up the routine. I think that’s why artist residencies have been so fruitful for me. When that energy runs out of a particular idea, working in different studios, environments, or amongst other artists, has been a very moving experience. Those are the experiences that really come back into the studio the most and re-invigorate my thoughts and ideas. My residency at the Doris McCarthy Fool’s Paradise in 2016 was a real catalyst for the new work.
What is the intention behind your work?
Moth and Mother 2018, coloured pencils and cut paper collage 19.5” x 19.5”
There are these narratives culled from female experience within my work, taken through the surreal or abstract view. But there is the impetus to create works that generate conversations about our own heavily coded ideas of women in the world.

From the beginning, Michael took his diagnosis in stride and began a 198-day treatment plan at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto. Initially, treatment went well for Michael and he even managed to continue his grade 12 studies. Then, half way through his seven-month course of chemo, things changed. Michael’s resolve began to wane as he experienced physical symptoms that affected his mental health. “I had an amazing team of nurses, oncologists, and physicians, and the physical effects of my cancer journey were successful,” he says; but he felt he could have used more support for “my emotional and mental health.”

That experience would be shared by 17-year-old Carley Elle Allison and her family when Carley was diagnosed in 2013 with clear-cell sarcoma of the trachea, an extremely rare cancer. Like Michael, she began her battle with incredible grace and strength. But then, explains Riley Allison, Carley’s older sister, “it becomes about chemo, radiation and surgery, and unfortunately daily methods of self-care go out the window. We wanted Carley’s journey to be different.” Carley and her family explored nutrition, exercise, and mindfulness practices to help maintain Carley’s mental health and overall wellness. Despite a valiant battle, that journey would come to an end when Carley passed away on March 31, 2015. “My sister was an incredible person whose story inspires so many people. Her motto was to always smile, and to never lose hope. Carley was open about her cancer experience and shared her story with others. When she passed away, we knew we wanted her story to continue.” So, Carley’s Angels was formed, with Riley as Executive Director. Since 2015, the organization has worked to raise funds to fulfill their mission to unite traditional methods and holistic treatments, in hospitals, and to support a whole-person approach to cancer care.

Sherry Holmes living by the motto to always “Make It Right.”
You are such a great role model for women in the skilled trades industry. What do you want people to know about a career in the trades? I want the next generation to stay open-minded and just go for it! It’s a fun, lucrative and rewarding career. We need more skilled trades workers, so there will always be work for you. You never know what you’ll be amazing at until you give it a try!
Congratulations on having a daughter! What is one thing about motherhood you’ve learned that you didn’t know before? Thank you! The entire experience has been so surreal. I never really considered having a family before. The time just seems to fly by! Honestly, I’ve learned SO much! I didn’t realize all the work it takes to be the best parent I can possibly be. As hard as it is, I now know that I can still be a great mom, and balance both my career and a little time for myself. I think it’s so important to make sure to focus on myself at least a little bit. That way, I can be in a better state of mind to be there for my daughter, Cali, and provide her with whatever she needs.
You have such a hectic schedule between shooting TV shows like CTV Life Channel’s Holmes 911, CTV’s upcoming Holmes Family Rescue, appearing at speaking engagements around North America, and raising a baby. How do you manage to juggle everything and what would your advice be to others trying to strike a balance between work and home life? It’s been tough trying to find the right balance that works for my family and me. Sometimes I make mistakes, and that’s okay. If I forget to respond to an email or I forget to pack Cali’s favourite toy, I forgive myself because nobody’s perfect! It takes time to sort it all out. I am tired and some days I can be a little more irritable than others, but it’s all worth it at the end of the day. The biggest thing I can say to other working/busy moms out there is have patience with yourself, and you CAN do it! It might seem daunting now, but it gets easier as time goes on.
There were young female apprentices brought out to help on Holmes 911. Did you feel you were a mentor to them? We brought two amazing women to help out while I was pregnant and therefore away from the tools for safety reasons. It was so great to have women with us and I encourage more women to join the work site! I don’t know if I would say that I felt like a “mentor,” but I certainly felt like a support to them on site. I remember when I was a young woman starting out, I was terrified to be the only female on site. But once I saw another woman around, I immediately felt more confident, so it definitely helps to have that kind of kinship.

I do feel like more and more women are starting to get involved in the trades, which makes me so happy. It’s becoming more and more acceptable and ladies are just going for it! I love to see that happening and hope it keeps up.
What do you hope to teach your daughter regarding career choices and gender stereotypes? I want to teach her never to succumb to stereotypes and that she can do whatever she wants regardless of her gender. I want to encourage her to try everything and stay open-minded when it comes to her career. I’m going to reinforce to her that she’ll be great at anything she puts her mind to and that I’ll be there to support her no matter what.
What do you hope to accomplish in the coming years, both careerwise and personally? Good question! In my career, I want to continue pushing myself. There are some things I find harder than others and I want to focus on those and work past my own insecurities.
As long as I’m trying my best, it doesn’t matter if I make mistakes or have to ask for help.
What excites you most about your work? What excites me most about my work is that I get to learn something new every day. I find my work challenging and fun and I look forward to trying different and new things. That, and we get to work with some truly amazing and deserving families. There is nothing quite like the feeling of helping someone out who really deserves it.
You work alongside your father Mike and brother Mike Jr. every day. Does working with family present any challenges you didn’t expect? And what do you love most about it? Of course! Working with those two can sometimes be difficult. The main challenge I find is trying not to bring work home with me. When family spends time together, it’s to connect and have fun, not to run through your next work day. But, we do have a great time together on site. Some days we can argue and disagree, like anyone, but we learn from one another and it’s just a really fun atmosphere!
How do you feel about working in a male-dominated field? Do you feel that female representation in the skilled trades has increased since you began your career? At the beginning, I was afraid; I didn’t want to be embarrassed at all. It took time for me to understand that I will never know everything, and as long as I’m trying my best, it doesn’t matter if I make mistakes or have to ask for help.

Two Fold Interiors
Creates a luxurious refuge for this palatial master retreat BY ANNA CIPOLLONE PHOTOGRAPHY BY GIZELLE GRIARTE
Taking a classic approach to modern design, Two Fold Interiors provides turnkey solutions uniquely tailored to the client’s project. With their creative concepts for small to large scale projects, Carrie and Veronica bring vast design knowledge with an unparalleled attention to detail, and a timeless but modern vision.
TWO FOLD INTERIORS VERONICA MARTIN AND CARRIE STINSON
T
he partners of Two Fold Interiors, Carrie Stinson and Veronica Martin, describe their aesthetic as a classic approach to modern design. Their firm focuses on custom newbuilds and large-scale renovations. The pair spent the first decade of their careers working on hospitality interiors, creating exquisite spaces for the likes of the Four Seasons and Rosewood Hotels, before moving toward residential and commercial design projects and launching Two Fold Interiors. Together, their sophisticated method of solving design conundrums is inspired by their shared ethos to create functional and visually pleasing homes that are personalized for their clients. This renovation in Toronto’s Cedarvale neighbourhood transformed a bedroom and ensuite bath into a soothing space in which the owners could unwind. “Our clients wanted to reflect a five-star hotel feel in their new master bedroom, closets, and ensuite,” says partner Veronica Martin. The clients – two busy professionals working shift schedules – needed a calming refuge to return to at the end of the day. With their opposing schedules, it was essential for them not to disturb one another when getting ready in the early morning or arriving home late at night.

Before images of the understated master retreat.
Some initial hurdles hinged on the re-design of the entire floor plan; the original layout had been an ensuite conversion whereas the new master suite was in need of an updated, thoughtful layout to make it feel spacious and elegant. And with clients who were steadfast in their decision-making, the construction process ran smoothly. “Our clients really trusted our vision and gave us space to develop and execute the design,” says Martin, noting that it’s always been important for the partners to have an in-depth understanding of the homeowner’s desires in order to craft an end product that will satisfy their needs. “We have worked on a number of Toronto’s older Victorian homes – they usually provide us with structural or electrical surprises during the demo phase of construction,” says Martin. This home was built in the 1960s, so it was fortunate that nothing popped up that would interfere with the intended design. A lavishly upholstered bed is layered with textures while the custom built-in provides open and closed storage. Opting for the neutrality of greyscale, the minimal use of colour makes the impact of the bright yellow accents all the greater, mimicking the delicate bronze consistent throughout the bathroom fixtures.

The ensuite’s vanity is the indisputable showstopper with its warm wood base, oversized double mirrors, and the largescale light fixtures above. “In our studio, we speak a lot about picking our visual moments to showcase design,” says Martin, “and this vanity is a good example of it.” The rest of the bathroom was kept quiet by repeating the same stone on the walls as the floor, she says, to create a warm white box for the vanity to become the focal point of the space. Echoing its truly modern motif, the eye is drawn upward by geometric domes and globe fixtures prominently displayed against the open hallway of white shiplap and wellsituated skylights. Creating tailored spaces that truly reflect the homeowners is at the core of this partnership. “Interior design is such a personal service,” says Martin, “the relationship we build with our clients is often our favourite part of any project.”

Nottawasaga Island Lighthouse Casting light onto a Collingwood heritage landmark PHOTOS COURTESY OF NOTTAWASAGA LIGHTHOUSE PRESERVATION SOCIETY
Nottawasaga Island Lighthouse is iconic to Collingwood, an offshore sentinel that announced to all Collingwood’s status as a major port and shipbuilder. Long decommissioned, the lighthouse is now weathered and crumbling. What was once a vital beacon for shipping is now little more than a seasonal beacon for the gulls and cormorants that colonize the island each spring. >
Constructed between 1855 -1858, the Nottawasaga Lighthouse was one of six Imperial Towers constructed by Scottish stonemason, John Brown. WWW.CHESTNUTPARK.COM // CH E S T N U T PA R K R E A L E S TAT E L I M I T ED, BR O K ER AGE // WWW.INVESTINSTYLE.CA

P
lans are afoot to restore the crumbling Nottawasaga Island Lighthouse.
Nottawasaga Lighthouse is a historically significant structure, one of six Imperial Towers erected in the 1850s to protect the growing fleet of commercial and passenger vessels travelling on Lake Huron,” explains Robert Square, vice-chair of the Nottawasaga Lighthouse Preservation Society (NLPS), a charity founded to restore the structure. “It was important to the way of life here and deserves preservation. Collingwood would never have developed into a major port if not for the lighthouse.” Offshore lies a string of rocks and shoals known today as the Mary Ward Ledge after the luckless steamer that ran aground on them in 1882 with the loss of eight men. It was the threat presented by these rocks that provided the impetus for construction of a lighthouse on Nottawasaga Island.
Since the Department of Fisheries and Oceans banding project was completed in 2006, the lighthouse has remained firmly anchored on the shore of Nottawasaga Island.
The lighthouse is an impressive structure. Made from locally quarried stone, it measures 85 feet in height and has a wall thickness of nine feet at the base, tapering to two feet at the top. The interior column is a constant 10 feet in diameter despite the outside tapering. The ornate lantern room was imported from France. The light was staffed from 1858 until automation in 1959. Keepers lived on the island year-round and raised their families in the cottage adjacent to the tower.
The exterior of the structure is wrapped in a weather-resistant material that sheds rain, snow and other moisture thereby preventing further water penetration to the interior.
In 2003, the Nottawasaga Lighthouse was deemed redundant and decommissioned by the Canadian Coast Guard. “In the years after, the structure began to deteriorate rapidly, including the collapse of a portion of the exterior stonework after a lightning strike,” explains Square. “We’ve wrapped the tower to keep the elements out and ensure there is no further damage.” The NLPS is currently in the process of acquiring ownership of the lighthouse so that the estimated $2 million in repairs can begin, with an eventual eye to opening this landmark to the public. Until then, Nottawasaga Island Lighthouse will remain an atmospheric roost for seabirds.
In 2006 the Canadian Coast Guard installed metal bands around the outside, a procedure seen as a 5 or 6 year band-aid solution until the future of the tower was determined. 50
Location: 4-115 First St #553, Collingwood, Ontario

Billy Bishop
Home and Museum BY ANDREW HIND PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF BILLY BISHOP MUSEUM
Billy Bishop, WW1 Canadian flying ace, was born and raised in this Victorian red-brick home, now a museum and national historic site in Owen Sound.
The Billy Bishop Home & Museum, built in 1884, is a beautiful Victorian house in the heart of Owen Sound. It is the boyhood home of Air Marshal William Avery “Billy” Bishop VC, CB, DSO & Bar, MC, DFC, ED.
B
illy Bishop, the most famous of hundreds of thousands of young Canadian men who served during the First World War, was a Victoria Cross recipient and Canada’s top flying ace of that war.
William Avery (Billy) Bishop Jr. was born in Owen Sound in 1894 and grew up in a comfortable home at 948 3rd Avenue West, built by his father in 1884. Bishop was fascinated with flying from his earliest years. As a boy, he made a flying machine from a crate and bed sheets, which he launched from the roof of the family home only to land in his mother’s rose bushes. This home is now a museum and national historic site in Owen Sound. Climb the steps of this beautiful, Victorian, red-brick home and step back in time to explore the lives of the Bishop family members and rediscover the man behind the legend. As well as their focus on Billy Bishop, the museum also serves to honour the wartime contributions of the many service men and women from Owen Sound and region.

Billy Bishop, Canada’s top flying ace of WW1.
Antique furniture collected by Billy and his wife Margaret, during their years living in Britain; this is Billy Bishop’s personal desk used in his home office.
Inside the museum you’ll see the antique desk Bishop worked at as Air Marshal during World War Two, and the uniform he wore at the time. There’s a bookcase with school books used by a young Billy and his sister, Louisa, a Royal Military College Yearbook with Billy’s picture and biography, and a share in the Bishop-Barker Aeroplane Company, the first (though short-lived) civil airline in Canada which Bishop founded with fellow Canadian ace, Billy Barker. The Billy Bishop Home and Museum engages the community through a variety of seasonal programs and events. Highlights of the year include Billy’s Birthday celebrations on February 8th; Victorian teas where you can experience the elegance and refinement of social gatherings of the day; and a Victorian Christmas with all the nostalgic charm of a 19th century yuletide celebration. The Billy Bishop Home and Museum is one of Owen Sound’s most popular attractions. The museum will be temporarily closed for upgrades during March, 2020. Major renovations to the front entryway, gift shop and dining room will make these spaces brighter. Check their website for re-opening dates.

Huntsville, the largest town in the Muskoka region, is a gateway to Canada’s treasure, Algonquin
Provincial Park. Home to 20,000, Huntsville is about 2 hours north of Toronto. Its abundance of clear lakes and thousands of kilometres of untouched wilderness make it a popular playground for those who appreciate nature and wide-open spaces, away from the bustle of city life. Art is a very important cultural feature of the town. Huntsville’s astonishing scenery has become a magnet for, and home to, many acclaimed visual artists. Famed artists like Tom Thomson and The Group of Seven painted in Huntsville. Throughout the town there are tributes to their renowned work. The Huntsville Art Society hosts many annual shows, exhibits and skills-sharing workshops. Whether you prefer to hike, bike, swim, spend the afternoon in a canoe, or fishing, there’s much to explore and experience in Huntsville’s great outdoors. The natural beauty of the area, and the seemingly unlimited recreational opportunities, make Huntsville a popular cottage destination. There are even a number of acclaimed summer camps for children. The Chain of Four interconnected lakes (Mary Lake, Lake Vernon, Peninsula Lake and Fairy Lake) offer more than 60 kilometres of boating and waterfront activities. Permanent residents and summer cottagers can boat right into downtown Huntsville.
INCREDIBLE VIEWS, PERFECT WATERFRONT, RENOVATED 2,500 SQUARE FOOT YEAR ROUND HOME/ COTTAGE
$999,000
Huntsville, Ontario
The first impression walking into this 4 season cottage is the spectacular view over Ril Lake. Situated on 8 acres with 655 feet of water frontage you really do feel like you are getting away from it all. Outside, a set of staircases lead to the water’s edge. The climb or descent is not overly difficult, but would not be recommended for those with mobility concerns. The waterfront itself is a wonderful haven for relaxation and enjoyment of the lake. A rock-surrounded lakeside patio provides a shelter from the wind as well as a waterside ambience to set the mood. Swimming off the dock is good, and there is a small, shallow sandy entry. Renovated from top to bottom this cottage is bright and inviting. 2,500 square feet with 5 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. Cathedral ceilings provide a wonderful sense of space with the open floor plan. A granite breakfast bar separates the kitchen and family room. Hemlock floors throughout the main living area, a wood burning fireplace, large dining area with sliding doors out to the deck, and brand new stainless steel appliances are just a few of the features. Bedrooms are all well- sized and the master with ensuite offers a gorgeous view over Ril. The lower level recroom is a walkout providing easy access from the cottage when making your way down or coming up from the water.

The Lake Joe Yacht Club:
From sunken ships to smooth sailing BY MATT DRISCOLL PHOTOGRAPHY BY TAYLOR NULLMEYER
The story of one of Muskoka’s best-known boating clubs begins in 1966 with four young women aboard a sinking wooden boat on Lake Joseph.
T
hose four young women – Laurie and Jennifer Goad, and Heather and Mary Dickie – were on their way to the Muskoka Lakes Golf & Country Club to take part in sailing lessons when their boat capsized leaving them drenched and disappointed but non the worse for wear. Shortly after that, Larry Goad (Laurie and Jennifer’s father) called his friend and neighbour, Richard Boxer Sr., an avid sailor, and hatched a plan to start a satellite sailing club on Lake Joseph with the support of the Golf and Country Club and fellow cottagers on Lake Joe.

It’s amazing to have multi-generation sailing families with us,” says O’Connor. “Now we have the children and grandchildren of past sailors and instructors.
Young campers, rigging up their boats after their morning lessons on the water.
From those humble beginnings, the Lake Joseph Yacht Club has grown to include more than 100 family memberships. “Our main function is to provide a safe, fun, inclusive community environment on the lake, where anyone can have fun learning the lifelong skill of sailing while making new friends,” says Shelley O’Connor, who has run the sailing school for the past 10 years. “I personally became involved with the club 15 years ago when we started coming to Lake Joe. I was looking for somewhere that our girls could make friends on the lake, but not go away to overnight camp for the entire summer.” The club now offers full-day and half-day programs, private sailing lessons, and they have their own race team. It’s come a long way from the summer of 1967 when the founders negotiated with the Lake Joseph Church to use shoreline and the Lake Joseph Yacht Club was founded. The Club eventually outgrew the church location and moved to Laurie Island, which was also the Goad Family Island, and the club was incorporated in 1978. Paul Linden, Assistant Head of the LJYC, shows young sailor how to tie down the clew.

Enthusiastic sailors practicing their skills out on Lake Joe.
The club ceased operations for a period in 1987 but a group of cottagers gathered to breathe life back into the operation in 1991. An agreement was reached with the Canadian National Institute for the Blind to operate partially on their property and adjacent railway access land, starting a long-term relationship that exists to this day. The fleet now consists of a full line of Opti Prams, Picos, Lasers and Club 420s to allow for progression from age 5 to adult.
OPTI sailors set up their boats before they head out on the lake.

Sherwood Inn BY MATT DRISCOLL PHOTOGRAPHY BY TAYLOR NULLMEYER
Guests at this classic Muskoka resort enjoy old-world charm and modern amenities, set beside Lake Joseph, amidst the tall pines.
T
he golden age of Muskoka resorts can be traced back as far as the early 1800s and the arrival of steamships to the region. Of the classic resorts that would proliferate well into the twentieth century, only a handful still remain. Among those is Sherwood Inn which was founded in 1942 and continues to welcome guests to its idyllic setting on Lake Joseph. Smaller than some of its contemporaries, like Windermere House on Lake Rosseau or Deerhurst in Huntsville, Sherwood Inn has always prided itself on offering a more intimate setting. Its size and setting make it a favourite for weddings and romantic getaways. Sherwood Inn’s roots run back to a Toronto lawyer named Harry Draper, who fell in love with Muskoka during visits to his Port Severn cottage. Along with his wife, Marjorie, Harry decided to build a resort nestled among the pines on the southern shores of Lake Joseph. Rather than compete with the massive resorts that already dotted Muskoka’s Big Three lakes (Joseph, Rosseau and Muskoka), Draper opted for a smaller scale, more akin to a large cottage estate, with all the latest amenities. The timing of the build was somewhat peculiar, as most of North America was only starting to emerge from the Great Depression. The Depression played havoc in Muskoka, and few people had extra income to spend on resorts or cottages. Many resorts were shuttered during the 1930s and never reopened. Despite the timing, the unique setting began to draw guests immediately and Sherwood Inn saw steady business throughout the 1940s. By the 1950s, Sherwood Inn was operating at peak
66
capacity and new buildings had been constructed to house the Draper children, who had also moved to the property full time. In 1960, Marjorie passed away and two years later Harry sold Sherwood Inn to Bob and Mary Pritchard. Over the course of the next 10 years, the Pritchards added six new cottages to the grounds to increase Sherwood Inn’s capacity. Although ownership of the property changed hands several times in the following years, the resort and grounds stayed more or less the same until 1979, when Sherwood Inn was purchased by John and Eva Heineck. The new owners transformed the resort into a year-round destination, adding a 16-room expansion to the main building, air conditioning for all the rooms, and a new tennis court. In 1998, the hotel was sold to Clublink who continue to operate the resort. Their tenure as owners and operators nearly ended in disaster when the inn suffered a devastating fire in September of 2009. Although no one was injured in the blaze, the fire caused more than $300,000 in damage and Sherwood Inn’s future hung in the balance. A swift and comprehensive renovation ensured the inn was restored to its former glory and ready for the 2010 summer season. Sherwood Inn continues to welcome guests 12 months of the year and stands as a reminder of Muskoka’s golden age.

Before Cottage Country:
Haliburton’s history honoured at the Haliburton Highlands Museum PHOTOGRAPHY BY THE HALIBURTON HIGHLANDS MUSEUM BY ANDREW HIND
Haliburton is an increasingly popular “cottage country,” where cottages are popping up on crystalline lakes like trilliums in a springtime forest. But there was a Haliburton well before the summer vacationers arrived. The leisurely pursuits of today were made possible by the labours of those who founded the County. Their collective story is told at the Haliburton Highlands Museum.
The Museum was founded as the Haliburton Highlands Pioneer Museum in 1967, as a Canadian Centennial project to commemorate the early settlers of the area.
The Haliburton Highlands Museum was established in 1967 with a mandate to preserve and celebrate the history of Haliburton Village and Dysart Township,” explains museum director Kate Butler. “While the museum covers all of Haliburton’s history, we focus largely on the first one hundred years—its formative period.”
The legs on one side of their bodies are shorter than those on the opposite side, allowing them to walk and graze sideways on steep slopes. But this peculiar adaptation means that they can only walk in one direction around the hill; if forced to walk in the other direction, a gouger would topple over. Or so goes the tall tale, a product of local folklore.
Over the years, the museum has grown substantially from a single Victorian home to a complex of buildings. The museum’s main building houses exhibits related to native peoples, early settlers, the lumbering era, and the later rise of tourism. Throughout, hundreds of rare artifacts are on display. “One of our most popular artifacts greets people as they enter— our taxidermied Sidehill Gouger,” Butler says playfully. Never heard of a gouger? They’re very rare, so it’s not surprising. The gouger is a species of wild goat adapted to hillside living. 74
Don’t miss the opportunity to stroll down a quiet country lane behind the exhibit building and explore a collection of heritage structures moved from elsewhere in the township. Begin with a recreated settler homestead depicting the modest and often harsh existence faced by settlers in early Haliburton. The farmstead consists of an 1870s log cabin and log barn which contains the tools a farmer used to try to attempt to transform the imposing forests and rocky soil into fields of crops. There’s also a blacksmith shop where a craftsman would have pounded glowing metal into shape.

// HALIBURTON LIVING //
With farmstead captures that era before the railway arrived in 1878 and reflects the kind of life a family of modest means settling in Haliburton would have had.
And then there is the beautiful Victorian-era Reid House, the first home of the museum, which Butler refers to now as the museum’s largest artifact. Fifty-year old wheelwright John Russell Reid arrived in Haliburton in 1871, as part of the first wave of settlement. Accompanying him were his wife, Amy, and their 19-year old son, John Russell Jr. They built a modest cabin and a workshop in what was then little more than a hamlet. Life in Haliburton in those days was hardscrabble and it proved too much for the elder Reids, who moved back to England less than a decade later. John Russell Jr. remained and became a wagon-maker and woodworker. In 1882, he built a comfortable home to replace the log cabin. Today, the home looks much as it would have when the Reids lived there. Staff members lead tours through the building, pointing out period furnishings and artifacts—including a number belonging to the Reid family—that help bring Haliburton’s Victorian-era back to life. Museum programming includes summer activities for kids, historic walking tours, boat tours and the occasional play by local theatre troupe, Rural Rogues. Though it preserves the history of Dysart Township, the Haliburton Highlands Museum is very much a part of the community’s present – and its future.

Haliburton Craft Brewers Fest BY ANDREW HIND
Head Lake Park, in Haliburton Village (population 1,150), hosts this third annual family-friendly event.
T
here’s a craft brewery revolution sweeping Ontario. See – and sample – for yourself, the best of this revolution at the Haliburton Craft Brewers Fest.
“There are about 250 microbreweries in Ontario, and the beauty of our event is that people have the opportunity to taste the creations of a number of these breweries in one location on one exciting day,” explains Gary Matthews, one of the event’s founding organizers. About a dozen craft brewery representatives from across Ontario will gather in picturesque Head Lake Park, in Haliburton Village, for the family-friendly event. Included in the July 18th fest are two award-winning Haliburton beer producers, Boshkung Brewery and Haliburton Highlands Brewery. A $20 passport grants all-day access to the festival and will get you four, four-ounce complimentary sample drinks from the participating breweries of your choice (a ‘dry passport’ entrance, without the drinks, is $5). Additional drinks (beer, cider and various coolers) can be purchased. The passport lets you come and go as you please throughout the day, allowing you the opportunity to explore the area – there’s a 6 km trail
76
around Head Lake, a children’s playground in the village, and the Haliburton Sculpture Forest in nearby Glebe park – before returning to the fest when thirst demands. Every hour, the bar-stage features representatives of participating breweries to talk about their products, including what foods best accompany particular beers, and how to incorporate craft beer into cooking. While beer is the focus, there’s more to the Haliburton Craft Brewers Fest: more than two-dozen cottage country vendors, live music to stir up the festival vibe, food, and entertainment for children. Organized by the Lions Club, all proceeds of the Haliburton Craft Brewers Fest go to worthy local causes, like providing guide dogs for those who are vision impaired and summer camps for under-privileged children. Sandbanks Provincial Park BY ANDREW HIND
It’s not as if Prince Edward County is otherwise unremarkable – with its picturesque vineyards, charming villages and towns with historic architecture, and roadside farms selling fresh produce – but Sandbanks Provincial Park is a truly special place.
Aerial view looking north west over West Lake toward Wellington. Photo by: John A. Brebner
S
andbanks Provincial Park boasts what is almost certainly the finest beach anywhere on Lake Ontario, with kilometres of clear, shallow water and spectacular dunes that are unique in the province.
But the beauty we appreciate today was largely the result of tragic mismanagement of the land in the 19th century, according to John Brebner, a member of Friends of Sandbanks Provincial Park. “The early settlers cleared the area of white pine for ships’ masts, and cedar for construction and fencing. During the socalled Barley Days, when every piece of land was transformed into barley fields for American beer makers, farmers finished off the clearing of the dunes by allowing cows to graze there. The resulting removal of all the vegetation allowed the sand to start drifting, and drift it did, covering houses, lodges and farmers’ fields,” says Brebner. Starting in 1922, the government began earnest conservation efforts to stabilize the dunes and restore a healthy ecosystem,
mostly through large-scale tree planting. The effort was a success, paving the way for a provincial park that’s every bit as busy as Wasaga Beach on hot summer weekends. Sandbanks has three spectacular beaches of golden sand – Outlet Beach, Sandbanks Beach and Dunes Beach – each one more inviting than the last for lazing on a blanket, building sandcastles and playing in the water. Outlet and Sandbanks beaches are especially ideal for young ones as the water is shallow before it gently drops off. Kayaks and canoes are available to rent for those who want something a bit more adventurous. However you choose to enjoy it, the water is sparkling clean and refreshingly cool. Beyond the beaches, Sandbanks Provincial Park has much to commend it. Explore any of a number of hiking trails, including the new Lakeview Trail that traces a rocky point that juts out into Lake Ontario, and the interpretive Cedar Sands Nature Trail, a two-kilometre loop along the shores of the Outlet River with two lookouts providing scenic views of the marsh.

Just one kilometre north of Dunes and Lakeshore Beaches, families set up to enjoy a relaxing summer day. Photo by John A. Brebner.
The most popular is Sandbanks Dunes Trail, a 2.5 km loop around a unique and fragile dune habitat and along the edge of several pannes, rare wetlands that supports wildlife and unusual flora. While exploring at West Point you might stumble upon foundations, weathered tennis and shuffleboard courts, and the remains of a dance floor. These historic relics remind us of one of the more fascinating, yet little-known aspects of Sandbanks Provincial Park: the rich history of Lakeshore Lodge. Built as a rustic hotel for summer tourists around 1870, by the 1890s Lakeshore Lodge had grown into an elegant three-storey structure with a recreational hall, dance pavilion, swimming pool, and tennis and shuffleboard courts. It was considered the height of vacationing in Ontario. Sadly, it later became derelict and burned to the ground in 1983. But you can relive the golden age of the resort during Lakeshore Lodge Days (July 22 and Aug 12, 2020, 12-4 pm), an interactive event hosted by Friends of Sandbanks Provincial Park.
The Lakeshore Lodge began life about 1870 as the Lakeshore House, erected by local farmer Lewis Mastin.
Sandbanks hosts other special events including noncompetitive sandcastle building at Sandfest (July 15, 2020) and Sandbanks Music Festival (Sept. 12, 2020, 1- 10pm) at the Park Amphitheatre. Throughout the summer, park staff offer a variety of fun, interactive educational programs including children’s activities, guided hikes led by Park Naturalists, evening campfires with slide shows, and more. An iconic stretch of Prince Edward County shoreline, the striking, golden dunes and sandy beaches at Sandbanks Provincial Park have been a symbol of summer recreation for more than a century. IIS 80

TECH SECTOR POWERING
Kitchener-Waterloo to new heights BY MATT DRISCOLL
It’s common knowledge that the tech sector in Southern Ontario has become something of a juggernaut over the past several years.
A
recent report released by real estate services firm CBRE notes that the tech talent pool in Toronto grew by some 54 percent between, 2013 and 2018. That same study also noted that a number of smaller cities in southern Ontario are also riding the tech wave. With an increase in the tech talent pool of 39.7 percent during the same five-year window, Kitchener-Waterloo is among those cities that have been able to put themselves in a position to capitalize on the bustling tech sector. The municipality increased its tech talent pool by roughly 20,400 people between 2013 and 2019, according to the same CBRE study. Last year, the Deloitte Technology Fast 50 list, drew all three of their top-ranked companies from the Kitchener-Waterloo area. At the top of the list was ApplyBoard, a recruitment platform designed to help international students study at the best institutions of higher education globally. Kitchener’s Intellijoint Surgical and Waterloo’s Auvik Networks were named number two and three, respectively. Perhaps the best-known tech company in the region is Blackberry Limited, the developer of the BlackBerry brand of smartphones and tablets. The company was founded as Research In Motion in 1984 by Douglas Fregin and Mike Lazaridis, an engineering student at the University of Waterloo.
82
The region is home to a number of other tech companies such as OpenText, Kik and Maplesoft. While the tech sector in Kitchener-Waterloo has exploded in the past five years, the conditions for success first began to take shape much earlier. The University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University are both located within the municipality and both have become hotbeds for high-tech growth and innovation. Another reason the region has been so successful in attracting tech companies is the cost of living. As housing prices have skyrocketed in major urban centers like Vancouver and Toronto, tech companies have increasingly sought out areas with a lower cost of living in an effort to entice talent. Physical distance is also becoming a thing of the past, as collaboration has become increasingly easy over vast geographical distances. The ubiquity of email and smartphones, combined with the creation and advancement of new online communication tools means the work can be done quickly on a global scale. As the tech sector continues to charge onwards across North America, Kitchener-Waterloo has positioned itself to be at the forefront of an economic evolution. IIS

In the Studio with Bespoke Eye Wear Makers Maison Bonnet
Heading the family firm that created Yves Saint Laurent’s signature eyewear, Franck Bonnet handcrafts spectacles and sunglasses that are visions of character and individuality. CONTENT PROVIDED BY CHRISTIE’S INTERNATIONAL REAL ESTATE
F
rom an early age, Franck Bonnet knew where his future lay. Hanging out with the craftsmen at his father’s eyewear business in Burgundy, France, he absorbed their knowledge and studied their art, ultimately becoming CEO of Maison Bonnet. “I’d spend
my Wednesdays with the craftsmen, trying to create little objects with the materials at my disposal,” remembers Bonnet. “Bespoke wasn’t viewed the same way in the 1980s, so my father was unsure, but I insisted. I was 18 and as the eldest of three, it was my responsibility to take over the family business.”

Bonnet, along with brothers John and Steven, is the fourth generation of the family atelier that began in the 1930s. “We’re guardians of an exceptional know-how, cultivated over generations and we need to pass on those skills, reflexes, and gestures, the mastery of materials, taste, and passion,” he says. “I still use pencils, files, and other tools as I did when I started. John has a passion for tortoiseshell grafting, which requires incredible skills and 10 years’ training, and Steven, the youngest, feels the same but uses software and a mouse,” he says. “Thanks to Steven’s knowledge we can embrace the future. When designing for a new client, Bonnet first seeks to understand their personality, “guessing what they are not ready to share.” Then he looks at frame shapes, drawing from a library of hundreds.
I’d spend my Wednesdays with the craftsmen, trying to create little objects with the materials at my disposal.
The materials come last. Frames are offered in acetate, low-allergy organic composite materials, buffalo horn, vintage tortoiseshell, and gold. “We work like artists,” Bonnet says. “Everything is important: the face’s ergonomy, length of eyelashes, bumps… We discuss everything, from the smallest issues and imperfections, to how they feel, how they live. Each piece is the fruit of a conversation.”

But why bespoke? “Glasses should never take center stage. Your eyes and gaze are what matter. If someone tells you that you have amazing glasses, the frame has caught attention, not your eyes. It’s about the perfect compromise between seeing and being seen. Weight, height, and hair color determine the frame’s shape, thickness, and material… and these must be secondary to bring out the eyes.” And sunglasses? “They’re the opposite and I become Picasso! We hide the eyebrows, the eyes, the gaze. We can be inventive. We are all about exactness and accuracy, but we love the idea of extravagance, it’s refreshing.” Bonnet splits his time between the original atelier in Palais-Royal, Paris, and the new boutique in London’s Mayfair, where he will surely add to the roll of famous faces framed by the house. Past clients include architect Le Corbusier and shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, who was “a great fan of tortoiseshell and bought pairs for his partners Maria Callas and Jackie O.” Another loyal customer was fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent, who wore what would become Maison Bonnet’s most iconic pair of all, designed in the 1970s. “My father was the gatekeeper of bespoke eyewear codes; a clear lens meant the eyes should be seen. But Saint Laurent was so shy he wanted big frames to hide everything, including his eyebrows,” Bonnet says. “This began a new future for the firm,” he adds. “While my brothers and I prefer a measured approach, we will break the codes and adapt with pleasure.” IIS
