Chevy Chase Club 2022 Club Championship
On the 19th hole, Gerlein holed a long bunker shot for birdie to tie the match. The remainder of the front nine of the second round was a back and forth affair. Ultimately, Ruffin’s win on hole 27 extended his lead to 2-up, heading into the final nine holes. Ruffin extended his lead to 4-up with a birdie on hole 29 and another victory at hole 31 but Gerlein battled back with wins on holes 32 and 33. With a 2-up lead on hole 34, Ruffin closed the match with a very delicate up and down from above the hole on the 16th green. This Horstmann Cup final was a very entertaining match and this victory is the first for Ruffin.
After posting a one-under par 69, which was good for a runner-up finish in the Fitzgerald Cup, Dr. Gerlein defeated Chris Connolly in the first round and was victorious in a close match on Saturday morning vs. Carter Steuart. His semifinal match versus Pete Lamade was a tremendous battle that ended on the 25th green Saturday afternoon.
Our championship match in the Horstmann Cup on Sunday afternoon featured Dr. Eduardo Gerlein and Sterling Ruffin. Both played terrific golf in the Fitzgerald Cup Qualifier and advanced through the match play bracket against tough opponents over the past few days.
Horstmann Cup
The first 18 holes of the championship match began on Sunday morning at 7:30 AM. Both competitors played steady golf on the front nine. Ruffin made the turn at even par and Dr. Gerlein at two-over par. Ruffin carried a 2-up lead into the back nine of round one and extended his lead on the 10th hole to 3-Up. Dr. Gerlein battled back with wins on holes 13 and 17 to keep the match close heading into the second round.

Sterling Ruffin fired a two- over par score of 72 in the Fitzgerald Cup which was good for 4th Place and solidified his position in the Championship bracket as the 5th seed. Ruffin defeated Aubrey Rothrock in the first round and Josh Hartman in the second round on Saturday morning. On Saturday afternoons’ semi-final match, Ruffin defeated a redhot Chris Renninger who was playing great golf and had some convincing wins in his first two matches.

2022 Club Championship
On a gorgeous September afternoon, the playing of the 93rd Sheridan Cup took place between Mina Coggeshall and Robin Dean. Robin Dean was looking to capture her first club championship. Robin took an early lead, paring the first three holes. Mina hit a great shot on hole number four to make birdie and keep the match at 2-up. On the sixth hole is where the momentum shifted after Robin Dean hit the green from 200 yards on a side hill lie and proceeded to two putt for par. The first tied hole of the match was on hole eight, the most challenging hole on the front nine with pars.

For the second flight our contenders Yoshimi Matsukata and Shirley Sagawa played a hard-fought match. Yoshimi held strong making the turn with a 4-up lead. As they made their way through the back nine Shirley continued to win back holes on the back nine to tie the match on the 18th. A back and fourth battle ultimately ended on the 23rd hole with Yoshimi Matsukata persevering to win the match.

Mina kept the lead close with an incredible up and down early on the back nine from 40 yards short of the green to extend the match. Robin followed up Mina’s up and down to regain her lead in the match on the following hole. With a conceded birdie on the thirteenth hole both players walked to the fourteenth hole with a few holes left to play. Despite some difficulties both players tied the hole and Robin Dean was declared our 93rd Sheridan Cup Champion. This is Robin Dean’s first win as our Ladies Club Champion after seven straight years of victory by Clare Connolly.
