Chiara Giaccari _ Architect “I was born in Lecce, Italy, on a warm summer day of 1988 and I’ve grown up near the sea, so that I strongly believe it is part of my life and my way of being. As a child, I had five obsessions: LEGO bricks, Barbie dolls, dog books, the movie “Evita” and a small cassette player and recorder with a michrophone to sing in. In my adolescence I soon discovered Giacomo Leopardi, Oscar Wilde, the Beat Generation, Fabrizio De Andrè, Caravaggio, Claude Monet, Vincent Van Gogh and Coco Chanel. From this moment on, I tried to live searching for beauty, freedom of expression and independence of thought. In Milan I came across Tadao Ando, Tim Burton, rock and roll and contem art, so that I learned the importance of being open to contaminations between different disciplines and between material world and your personal spiritual dimension. I got my Architecture degree in July 2014 at Politecnico di Milano, after following a course focused on interior design. My final university work is called “Il risveglio dei guardiani” and concerns the riqualification of the seven lighthouses of Salento, my inspiring native land. Currently I’m making some work experiences and I’m still searching for new inspirations in cinema and art.”

The project starts from an existing building, a structure for public bathrooms built in 1928, transformed in a professional school for mechanics in the ‘70s and abandoned since 1999. The main idea is to create a sort of inner agorà, a place where the artists can find their own space to create, meet, discuss and exhibit their works. The project provides: guest houses for artists (green), with private studios/ateliers (violet) and a common kitchen/living room (ciano); an ehxibition gallery (white); a flexible space for videos, music and conferences (white); a bookshop (orange); a literary cafè (red); an exhibition garden. The space was long and narrow, so it was necessary to enlarge it ideally: the two elements that work to “expand” the room are the bowed false ceiling and the glass wall towards the garden. The cafè is divided in three areas: a more dynamic one, in front of the bar counter, a “confidential” one, in the small separate space on the left and the open-air part.

SPLIT TO CONNECT _ Area Ex-Pozzi (Corsico, MI) coauthor: Diletta Gigante year: 2012
This masterplan has the aim to transform an abandoned industrial site along the Naviglio Grande into a vital area of residential expansion and social interactions. The guiding principle is the idea of “urbanity”, intended as that fusion of shape and aesthetics able to define the rules for a respectful and conscious cohabitation in the city, as for the citizens and for the architectural elements. The main idea is to split the aggregation core into two cultural poles, in order to generate a larger number of fluxes and social interactions and more dynamism. One pole is a public library, realized in the old buildings of the factory, and the other is a theatre, built ex novo and crossed by a bridge. The latter connects the two banks of Naviglio Grande, passes through Ex-Pozzi and goes straight towards the other residential district. Each cultural pole has its own square: for the library it’s a space for reading and meditation, with water pools and benches; for the theatre it’s a free space for meeting. Between the two poles there is a long pedestrian road, separating the apartment blocks (with shops at their ground floor) from a public green area along the canal.

For what concernes the buildings, the main attempt has been to mantain certain traditional characteristics of the region, such as adobe bricks as cladding material. The shapes are simple, pure and solid and the only exception to this uniformity is a variation in shape, corresponding to the access to the residential block: it’s a “recess” for towers and bigger buildings and a “protrusion” for smaller ones. Sliding shutters are typical in Lombardia and Northern Italy and are a way to give continuity to the facade. The front is divided in three parts: a ground level, covered in white plaster, that represent the commercial floor, a central portion, cladded with bricks, that hosts the residential levels, and a crowning element, again in white plaster, from which is raised the “inverted” pitched roof.

The theatre is divided in three parallelepiped “bodies” with different proportions: one slanting, containing all the services spaces, like laboratories and offices, a lower one, for the hall and the audience, and a taller and narrow one, for the stage and the backstage. These parts are easily distinguishable for the various heights and claddings: the slanting solid is covered with adobe bricks and has numerous windows, narrow and long, that articulate regularly full and empty surfacecs; the central segment is totally transparent, closed in a glass wall, to offer the maximum transparency and contact with the square around it; the scenic tower is made of white concrete and its entirely devoid of windows, except for a large one on the back, opened to create a view toward the park and the Naviglio. The idea for a “container”, completely detached from its contents, comes from Kahn’s metaphor of the “violin” inside its “case”, infact the performance area appears as the true core, around whom occurs the circulation, and that is closed inside a “box” everyone can see through. DISCLOSURE _ Via Conchetta - Via Troilo (Milano) coauthor: Diletta Gigante year: 2012
The building is located in the historical neighborhood of Porta Ticinese, near Corso S. Gottardo, and occupies a triangular lot, representing its completion on the South side, between Via Troilo and Via Conchetta. The area is one of the most important cultural districts in Milan, is rich in architectural values and is very close to Navigli. The theme of the project is a Modern and Conteporary Art Gallery for temporary exhibitions, owned by a private foundation. The goal is to build a dynamic and flexible museum with plenty of services for the public: a cafè, a bookshop, a conference hall, a small library and some offices. The access to the gallery is in the basement floor, under the street level: people can meet in the Underground “Piazza” (square), that can become a small open-air arena; otherwise, visitors can stop and sit along the stairs in Via Troilo. The exhibition goes outside the museum, in strict contact with the city, using The Wall for street art located in via Troilo, or the exhibition portals along the stairs.

The main element is the idea of epiphany (i.e. disclosure), realized all along the exhibition itinerary. It brings the visitor in a continue discovery of the artworks, but also of the different ways in which the prismatic volume changes around its empty core.

H2O LAB _ Experimental project for a laundry coauthor: Diletta Gigante year: 2013
The starting point of the project was a cube with each of the dimensions of 70 cm: this had to be the maximum volume of the project model, in a self-chosen scale. The volume could be modified as needed and the space could be located at the top, on the ground or in the middle of the cube. From this premises, was developed a project based on the idea of interiority, intended as an excavated space (as a primordial cavern), but also as a space of free expression of the self. The result is a changing landscape, that is modified in its shape and colors by the variation in the objects’ positions and by the presence of different clothes: is a space where things happen and all is up to the users. From this fact comes the idea of SensAbility, i.e. the possibility, for human beings, to change their biography constantly, starting from daily life. The only rules approved are that of nature: the laundry is provided with a fitodepuration system, that allows to purify the water coming from the machines and to reuse it. The space is a microcosm able to regenerate its mechanical processes autonomously.

This small apartment block fills a void among others and is placed in a lot behind the curtain of buildings raised along Via Kramer, near Porta Venezia. The main source of inspiration for this project is japanese architecture, for its moderation and simplicity and also for the preciseness of the lines and the pureness of volumes and shapes. So, this small building emerges in the congested and chaotic landscape by contrasting it.

The pedestrian access is provided by a “zen” path, an open-air corridor flanked by high concrete walls; all along its right side is put a rectangular pool of freshwater. A sort of cathartic path brings from the chaos of the city, to the calm of private domestic life. The access to the garage is separated from the pedestrian way by one of the two concrete walls, that becomes a partition and that guides people towards the foyer of entrance. IL RISVEGLIO DEI GUARDIANI (i.e. The awakening of the Guardians) _ Master’s degree thesis coauthors: Diletta Gigante & Alberto Vanin year: 2014
The goal was to reconnect the lighthouses of San Cataldo di Lecce, Torre Sant’Andrea, Otranto (fanale), Punta Palascia, Santa Maria di Leuca, Torre San Giovanni e Gallipoli (Isola di Sant’Andrea), creating a system based on a coherent cultural project, and making them the knots of a theoretic and tangible net. thr left: each lighthouse is a
knot of the new cultural knot, but also a stop along a real route, so each lighthouse has its own toll booth; the booths have the same shape and skin, but different functions, positions and openings.

skin was designed, starting from the texture of the rocks and the stone of
Salento’s coast.
This weave of memories, ideas, paths, finds concrete representation in the skin of the “tollbooth” of each “station” along the route. It is a small parallelepiped, that takes on different functions, according to the role of its corresponding lighthouse in the system. The perforated skin, inspired by the local rocks and stones, allows a semi-permeability and, during the night, the transit of the light, so that the small pavilion becomes a double of the beacon or the headlight.
Punta Palascia, solitary tower on a rock, becomes a “marine shelter” for those who want to go back to the simple way of life of the lighthouse keepers. Common spaces (reception, living room, kitchen) are on the ground floor of the main building, the rooms are in the small, old lighthouse keeper’s house.
The ruinous “Museo della Biodiversità e dell’Ecosistema mediterraneo”, previous utilization of the building, is reorganized on the second floor only. The inspiration for the layout of the rooms comes from the Studio Azzurro’s “ambienti sensibili” (i.e. “sensitive environments”). The approach to knowledge is never professorial, but always direct and based on the five senses. Torre San Giovanni, located in a small town and close to an harbor, becomes a yatch club, providing new sport activities and recreational spaces. The tower, besides being a landmark on the ionic coast, becomes a hinge and a reference point for the town and its citizenship. Sant’Andrea lighthouse (Gallipoli), located on an island, becomes a “totem”, that can only be seen from the distance, walking on a floating boardwalk. The access to the island is not permitted, since it is a natural reserve for the seagull’s reproduction, infact it’s called “seagull’s island”.
The shape of the boardwalk comes from the plan of the ancient core of the city; on each of the eight directrixes extracted from it, have been placed eight square modules. At the end of the quay has been arranged an open “tollbooth”, intended as a “meditation room”, that has a window pointed towards the lighthouse. The eight square platforms tell the story of the island and of its tower, from the IX century a.C. to 2006: each of them represents a milestone in the story, which is narrated on the back of some metal “narrative benches”. Moreover, on the concrete floor, are engraved or printed some images or pictures of the island, of the building and of its inhabitants. Above:

The table has been designed to find place in the octagonal hall of the 16th century tower, under a dome. The hall is the heart of all the activities of the club and it has to be suitable for different purposes. The table is dismountable in twelve modules and each of them is joinable to another, in order to meet various needs. The modules derive from the composition and re-elaboration of the motif of two majolicas found nearby. The title “Tree Hug” was selected because the word “hug” contains the circular, closed meaning which we found really suitable for the family. Furthermore, in our idea, the tree plays a major role as the symbol of nature. The users and the form of the construction hugs it and they accepted it as a basic interactive element between them. The closed court is an architectural solution which is used in italian architecture since the ancient years. It provides good circulation of the air and it connects the people of the house in a central spot as a reference point thet gives also privacy and becomes an interactive indoor environment. The parts of the unity have the ability to move on a rail, so as to disconnect and provide better circumstances of ventilation, but also more privacy between the members of the family.

HOLD ME IN YOUR HEART! _ Strongbox shell coauthor: Arch. A. Stelvio Carpentieri year: 2015
This piece of furniture is designed with the aim to wrap and hide an existent strongbox in a private house. Since this box had to be placed in a bedroom, we developed two main ideas: love and preciousness. Moreover, we tried to invent an object with an autonomous identity, as a piece of art. It has a wooden structure and at first we tried to cover it with gold leaf, but then we made a more “passionate� version covered with red leather and burned brass.

MOSAIC AND GLASS DROPS _ Project for a bathroom

The two bathrooms are part of a larger project of refurbishment for an apartment in Lecce. I followed the works through all their progression and I took part in the design of some elements of the house. For these bathrooms, Stelvio Carpentieri and I, tried to develop the idea of gushing water and to recreate a sense of freshness and clarity.

This wardrobe is part of the previous project of refurbishment and has to be located in the nuptial bedroom. Is really simple and clean in its lines and colors and at the same time very elegant and up with the times. Above:
