briefly COLLINS PASSES BILL TO STRENGTHEN WORKER PROTECTIONS
CHICAGO — As part of her continued advocacy for workers’ rights, state Rep. Lakesia Collins, D-Chicago, passed legislation to steepen penalties for employers who violate the One Day Rest in Seven Act. “The One Day Rest in Seven Act is an essential tool in ensuring the safety and wellbeing of workers across the state,” said Collins. “Increasing the penalties for violating this regulation underscores the importance of treating workers with the respect and dignity they deserve.” Collins passed Senate Bill 3146, which installs a two-tier penalty system for employers who do not comply with the one-day rest period and meal period requirement. Under the bill, individuals who work longer than 7.5 hours are entitled to a 20-minute meal period every 4.5 hours, and employees are granted a rest day after any 7 consecutive days. The bill also requires every employer to post a “Know Your Rights” poster in the workplace and online for remote/traveling workers. Senate Bill 3146 passed both chambers of the Illinois General Assembly and now heads to the Governor for consideration.
RELATED MIDWEST ANNOUNCES LAND TRANSFER TO DISCOVERY PARTNERS INSTITUTE, CHICAGO’S NEWEST TECNOLOGY HUB, AT THE 78
CHICAGO — Related Midwest announced that it has completed a land transfer to the Discovery Partners Institute, which will anchor the innovation district in Chicago’s newest neighborhood, The 78, with a 300,000-square-foot research and innovation center. The interdisciplinary hub and magnet for technology investment, led by the University of Illinois System, is projected to break ground in 2023 and open in 2026. The Discovery Partners Institute will prepare young people, especially women and people of color, for careers in technology, fund research and development teams, and launch new ventures based on University of Illinois System research. The team has grown to about 45 people with eight positions open and has recently doubled its current headquarters at 200 S. Wacker Drive. Related’s one-acre land donation will enable DPI to attract and retain top talent in Chicago, with certain option rights to expand at The 78. The 78 will transform 62 acres of undeveloped riverfront land into a vibrant downtown mixed-use community drawing inspiration from Chicago’s existing 77 neighborhoods. The 78 will expand the heart of Chicago southward, connecting the South Loop with Chinatown, Bronzeville with Pilsen, and providing industry-leading companies with a rare downtown campus opportunity that looks to the future of innovation while embracing the city’s rich history. Approved for 13 million square feet of mixed use space, The 78 will include the capacity for more than 20,000 people to work onsite, drawing on Related’s proven track record of dynamic mixed-use projects. The 78’s forward-looking design incorporates multiple infrastructure improvements to support commuters and draw visitors, including a new pedestrian- and bike-friendly road, the new Wells-Wentworth Connector, that will link the Loop to Chinatown. It also extends Chicago’s famed Riverwalk, with a halfmile of entertainment-optimized riverfront space for visitors of all ages. DPI’s building is funded with a $235 million commitment from the State of Illinois, $23.5 million of which has been released thus far to support design and development. Further, the Pritzker Foundation has gifted $10 million to establish the Pritzker Tech Talent Labs at DPI. Other funders include the CME Group Foundation, Apple and Google. Community organizations receive portion of $2.7 million for development projects Continued from page 1 BY TIA CAROL JONES
Community Desk Chicago, also known as the Desk, was founded in 2019, with the goal to understand roadblocks that exist for communities when it comes to moving projects forward. It is housed at Chicago Community Trust. The Desk focuses on advocacy, from an ecosystem perspective and on a project level. It advocates to support projects that are very challenging to get funded in neighborhoods – wealth building opportunities and those that improve quality of life. On the ecosystem level, the Desk advocates for system change, tackling issues surrounding loans and loan values. It looks for solutions in regards to capital issues and funding going into neighborhoods. A big body of the work is to support community investment vehicles, trying to figure out how can The Desk assist communities in pooling their capital to acquire property. “We really want to position communities to control their own destinies and move beyond a community plan, actually implement that plan,” said Ja’Net Defell, director of T The Desk spends a lot of time being a conduit between community projects and funders. The Desk helps projects by prepping communities on how to use the language necessary to get funding for their projects. It also connects communities to resources and capital. The three organizations were chosen because of their reputation, their position in the community and their prominence in the community. The neighborhoods of these organizations also have been struggling with gentrification and are underserved in a technical assistance perspective. In South Shore, Defell said that the community is primed because of its proximity to the Obama Presidential Center, and Lake Michigan, to take action in terms of activating a lot of blighted and vacant buildings. Tonya Trice, executive of the South Shore Chamber of Commerce has been active with the Small Business
Advocacy Council to address the vacancy issues. The Desk wants to support Trice and her team in thinking about how to activate 71st Street and improve the quality of life for residents to create walkable, livable communities. The South Shore Community Development Corporation was founded as the community-focused arm of the South Shore Chamber of Commerce in 2019. Both entities provide supportive services to entrepreneurs and small businesses in the South Shore community. “We will help to create more community-led development and wealth building efforts. The two organizations kind of work hand-in-hand to make sure we are empowering South Shore with the right tools and capital necessary for economic development and growth,” Trice said. Small business owners and entrepreneurs in the community were in need of access to more capital and more broader initiatives that benefits the small business owners, as well as other residents, so they had a voice in what development initiatives into the community. With the funds from The Desk’s Neighborhood Initiative, the South Shore Chamber CDC will focus on real estate development projects, as well as broader economic development initiatives that will benefit the entire South Shore community. Trice believes that South Shore is well-positioned for the revitalization of its commercial corridors and the momentum is there. There are several local developer initiatives underway. The South Shore Chamber CDC is preparing to be a strong development collaborator and leader in the area. “We want to focus on the residents that are currently in the community, working to make sure they have the best quality of life available, and we are building our capacity to make sure we serve as the glue that binds the community together. We also want to make sure the voices of the residents in the community are listed and made a part of any projects that come into South Shore, and that we uplift and preserve the culture of the South Shore community in doing so,” Trice said.

That they too can be the next CEO or President of the United States. CHICAGO – On Thursday, April 7, President Obama spoke with 450 students in the auditorium of Hyde Park Academy High School as part of the Obama Foundation Futures Series, conversations designed to expose high school students to different professions within various industries. The series seeks to deepen the students’ understanding of career pathways through intimate conversations with accomplished leaders about their experiences and valuable learning lessons. During the hour-long conversation, Hyde Park Academy students had the opportunity to directly ask the President questions about his early career decisions, his time in office, and the unexpected turns he encountered along the way. “I didn’t have a clear cut path to becoming the President of the United States, I took many roads to get to where I am today and it took me a while to get there,” said President Obama. “There is so much pressure around what you’re going to do when you grow up and the truth is you have room and time to explore a bunch of ideas. You all are so young and you shouldn’t feel bad that you haven’t figured it out yet.” The Futures Series began in February 2022. The Foundation collaborated with the school’s student advisory committee to help outline session format, curate speakers, and identify career paths students are eager to learn more about, from arts and entertainment to business and entrepreneurship and from science and technology to public service. Sessions typically welcome 35-50 students across grade levels, who are selected by Hyde Park Academy teachers, counselors, and the principal, to participate in conversations based on their career aspirations. Speakers to-date include: Ariel Investments Founder John Rogers and his mentee Myles Gage, Founder of Rapunzl,
“AGELESS DIVA, ENJOYING LIFE ON NATURE’S TIMELINE,” is BEATRICE WATSON Poetic Storyteller’s favorite reference, when it comes to age. For those that feel bound to follow Man-Made chart of Time and Age, do your own math. She came of age in Detroit Michigan, during the Mid Fifties and lives her adult life in Chicago. “For as long as allowed, I will approach each day as, No Better Time to fulfill my God Given Purpose.” Proclaims this vibrant, resilient woman, rich in age, Blessed in experience and wisdom. This New Age take on life, has led Beatrice, with the support of her daughter Mia, to embark upon a campaign called “Ageless Divas, Women of Purpose,” a project that hopes to motivate women of all ages to take charge of their own destiny, by discarding the stigma and psychological pressure that society places on women based on physical attributes and predetermined years of useful viability. Beatrice purposely uses the term,” Diva,” which Webster describes as a difficult or temperamental woman, it was a term that prominent Black women was negatively labeled with, because of their determination, defiance and self-confidence. Those positive, qualities were not the picture that society wanted the world to identify with women of color. A Black woman’s personality and attitude, whether people like it or not, was shaped from our journey of survival, where strength, not sweet smiles or feminine tears was the acceptable boarding pass, for us and our families. “I proudly wear the title, “Diva” because it is a badge of Honor, that shows the hurdles, struggles and obstacles that women of color had to overcome, and they are still doing so.” Over Three Decades Beatrice, under her community theater group, JA-WA Production, now recently an LLC, has conducted
Workshops and produced annual productions that addresses the struggles, survival and triumphs in the inner city and is now setting her sights on the film industry. Her creative platform serves her as a Community Activist, bringing participants of all ages, gender and class together, in order to bridge a common ground of respect and self-worth. As well as being an innovative entrepreneur, that has seen firsthand the changing times and the effects it has had on the African American Experience, over the years, Ms. Watson uses her personal challenge as a ten-year Cancer Survivor to encourage women, not only to be the guardian of their own health, but to take advantage of each day, living it to its fullest, as they continue to strive toward their highest potential. A published Author of “Simply Madear,” a family value Memoir, of overcoming the loss of a mother, a Social Issue book of Poetry, “The Fragments of Life, “and its companion, a spoken word CD/DVD, “Look, Here Comes the Sun!” as well as a Workshop facilitator, Beatrice assists writers in documenting their legacy, through the writing of their Memoir. She is presently working on her autobiography, “The Making of an Ageless Diva, not a Fairytale,” Set on an historical backdrop, from the 50’s through the present, it gives an insight on how women in general and Black women, in particular, have had their lives manipulated, from infancy into adulthood, by way of the fallacies of fairytales, per her point of view. Its due out in the late Fall of this year. For more information on Beatrice and her work, you can go to www.beinspiredand-ageless.com.

LIGHTFORD: BUDGET PROVIDES SOLID ECONOMIC RECOVERY FOR HARDWORKING ILLINOISANS
Illinois Senate Majority Leader Kimberly A. Lightford (D-Maywood) released the following statement after the Senate passed its Fiscal Year 2023 budget Saturday: “Building on our recent economic decisions, this budget has the largest surplus we’ve seen in years. We are using these additional funds to provide stability to more than 95% of taxpayers. “We are succeeding in paying our debts by meeting our pension obligations, saving taxpayers over a billion dollars, and fully funding College Illinois. In addition, to address violence in our communities, we are allocating funding to the Reimagine Public Safety Act. “I also worked diligently to allocate more funding for the Department of Human Services programs such as early intervention, parents too soon, and healthy families. Also, to better serve our students’ success, I increased our early childhood education by more than ten percent and expanded our evidence-based funding model for K-12 students. “We even increased mental health treatment services to address health crisis and enhanced our senior citizens’ care. This budget keeps on track with meeting our financial obligations and helps us on the road back to normalcy and economic recovery.”
SENATOR COLLINS VIOLENCE REDUCTION MUST THRIVE IN TANDEM WITH HOUSING STABILITY INITIATIVES
In response to the confirmation of the state’s budget for fiscal year 2023, State Senator Jacqueline Collins (D-Chicago) issued the following statement: “This year’s budget effectively demonstrates a commitment to reducing the violence in our neighborhoods and making meaningful reform to our systems for the purpose of correcting general disparities and discrimination. With significant allocations to the Reimagine Public Safety Act and funding for law enforcement training, license plate readers and body cameras, we will grow closer to a more equitable and stability-inducing state.” “Though I am pleased with these investments, I would like to see greater commitments to promoting housing stability in the Black community. This should take the shape of stronger funding initiatives that address incarceration rates, underrepresentation and the lack of economic mobility. We must now take a more active stance against inequity wherever it persists.”
HUNTER ON FISCAL YEAR 2023 BUDGET PLAN: THIS IS A WIN FOR ILLINOIS FAMILIES
Building upon the General Assembly’s commitment to budget in a responsible, equitable way that benefits communities in all corners of the state, the Illinois Senate Democratic Caucus passed a budget and tax relief plan that puts money back to Illinois families and organizations – two proposals State Senator Mattie Hunter (D-Chicago) was proud to support. She released the following statement: “Thanks to this package, I am excited the state is moving toward long-term economic growth and stability. This budget and tax relief plan will provide significant relief to Illinois residents through refund initiatives, public safety investments and health care improvement. “We have done a lot of work to promote equity in the health care sector, and I am ready to see the execution of those initiatives. “I am glad that working families will get a much needed break. The freeze of the 1% grocery sales tax and suspension of the scheduled increase of the gas tax, in addition to the increase of the property tax rebate, will do wonders for the state economy.”

Fun Easter Basket Alternatives to Candy
Display Advertising call us at (773) 783-1251
(StatePoint) Looking to fill your child’s Easter basket with something a bit different this year? Unlike candy, these fun and engaging gift ideas will last well beyond the holiday: • Expand their library: Grow your child’s library with books that expand their horizons. For example, “100 Words About Places I Go,” is an interactive learning book featuring words in English and Spanish. Ten touch-sensitive locations on each page teach about words, colors and counting in the context of 12 unique places, like the beach, the farm, the amusement park and more. Another title to consider is the “100 Animals Book,” which introduces children to animals from the desert, savanna, rainforest and more through illustrations, photographs and fun facts that promote early science awareness. Finally, the “Learning Friends 100 Words Book” introducers little learners to words about food, nature, opposites and more. • Make crafting happen: Kids’ crafting kits can boost creativity and spur your child’s artistic side. And there are many options that are perfect for celebrating the spring season, from gardening kits to bird feeder painting kits to terrariums. • Create learning fun: With no web connection, downloads or account setup required, kids can get right to the fun with LeapLand Adventures, a unique plug-and-play TV video game adventure for early learners from LeapFrog. With 15 replayable levels introducing curriculum-based content and important foundational skills, preschoolers will enjoy going on a quest across LeapLand to learn about letters, numbers, shapes and colors. • “Adopt” an animal: You can introduce children to an important cause in a way they can understand through a “symbolic adoption” from the World Wildlife Fund. Adoption kits, which support efforts to protect animals in the wild, come with a plush toy, a photograph, an adoption certificate, and a species card containing fascinating facts about the animal and its habitat. This year, think beyond the typical Easter basket selections and opt for memorable gifts that enrich the mind and connect kids to the world around them. ________________________________________
