COOK COUNTY TREASURER MARIA PAPPAS SENDING MORE THAN $47 MILLION IN AUTOMATIC REFUNDS TO

More than 53,000 property owners who overpaid their First Installment taxes last year will automatically get back more than $47 million in refunds starting this week.

“If you have a refund coming, we’ll find you and return your money,” Pappas said. “By putting refunds on automatic pilot, we’re eliminating a lot of unnecessary paperwork and applications.”

More than 58 percent of the refunds will be deposited directly into property owners’ accounts over the next three months. See if you’re due an automatic refund by visiting cookcountytreasurer. com. Select the purple box labeled “Your Property Tax Overview” and enter your address or 14-digit Property Index Number (PIN).

Here’s a breakdown of some refunds:

16,629 homeowners who paid their property taxes online will see a total of $14.8 million electronically deposited to their bank or credit card accounts

22,241 homeowners who paid their taxes through a bank/mortgage escrow account will be mailed refund checks totaling $14.8 million

14,137 homeowners who paid taxes totaling $17.4 million in cash or by check will receive an electronic refund or will be mailed a refund application to ensure the proper party receives the refund

Most of the refunds will go to homeowners receiving property tax exemptions, which are applied to the Second Installment tax bill and reduce the total taxes due. The exemptions include: Homeowner, Senior Citizen, Senior Freeze and Disabled Persons. Second Installment 2021 property tax bills were due on December 30, 2022.

Pappas launched the automatic refund program in July 2018. Since then, more than 174,000 property owners have received about $129 million in refunds without having to fill out an application.

TILLMAN: DOLTON 149 GETS $150,000 STATE GRANT; SEN. SIMS THANKED

Calumet City, Ill. – South suburban Dolton School District 149 will receive a $150,000 grant from the state of Illinois in a supplemental budget recently approved by Illinois lawmakers, and its top elected official is offering a public “thank you” to a key state legislator who secured the funding.

Board of Education President Wilbur Tillman expressed his “deepest gratitude” to State Senator Elgie Sims (D-Chicago), the chair of the Illinois Senate Appropriations Committee, who sponsored the grant for the district.

“On behalf of the entire Board of Education, I want express my deepest gratitude to Senator Sims for championing the $150,000 grant for Dolton 149,” said Tillman. “The district appreciates Senator Sims support for and invest in local schools.”

The grant, which was part of a supplemental budget, HB 969, approved by lawmakers on January 10, 2023 during the legislature’s lame duck session, seeks to help the district with “violence interruption” and “community development,” according to the legislation.

“The safety of our students is a top priority for the district,” said Tillman. “And a thriving community contributes to the safety and well-being of children, and this money will help our efforts to strengthen our schools in the community.”

Tillman pledges to continue advocacy on behalf of the district.

“As Board President and a member of the board of education, I will remain a fierce advocate for securing additional money from Springfield to help our schools,” Tillman said. “I will fight for every dollar to improve our children’s education.”

Rahmaan Statik has had a knack for creating art since he was in the second grade. In Elementary School, his work won art contests. He always wanted to be an artist. He has consistently been making art since then.

In High School, Rahmaan Statik started off as a graffiti artist and airbrushing clothing. It was alluring for him to create the work that would be seen on the street. Rahmaan graduated from the American Academy of Art in 2005 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Multimedia Web Design and a Minor in Oil Painting.

Rahmaan Statik connected with Chicago Public Art Group in 2003, while he was attending American Academy of Art. The group is best known for the mural on the Avalon Regal Theatre, located at 1645 E. 79th St. He wanted to learn how to make murals they way the people in the group made murals, while still keeping his connection to Hip Hop and the streets.

“This is a mission I’ve known I was supposed to be on since I was a kid, and I still haven’t stopped and I refuse to stop,” he said.

Rahmaan Statik’s inspiration to create his work has changed throughout the 30 years he has been creating art. When he was a kid, he wanted acceptance from his peers and to show his work was good. After art school, he strived to be better than Michelangelo and Rembrandt. Now, his motive is more spiritual and he wants to challenge the old masters.

“We have resources to our advantage that artists of previous generations did not have, that separates us. That makes what we do different,” he said, adding that he wants to inspire people to make

good art themselves.

Rahmaan Statik also wants people to be passionate about their art. He is looking to create an Urban Renaissance. He believes people who have ideas for art projects should follow through and bring them to fruition, it might be the thing that sets the next trend.

Rahmaan Statik hasn’t just created work in Chicago and the Chicagoland area, he also has created work in Indiana and Wisconsin. He is working on the development of a map of his murals.

“I try to make the newest project I’m working on my best project. Especially the older I got, with creating art and murals, it puts me in competition with myself,” he said.

The work he is most proud of is the work where he was allowed to have the most creativity. The projects that were most fun for him were the ones where the client let his creativity shine and didn’t interfere with his creative process.

Rahmaan Statik loves his job. And, he wants parents and teachers to promote children having hobbies at a young age. He believes it will give them a better idea of what they want to do for the rest of their lives. He also advises that people should pick a career that they love.

“I’m glad I didn’t just take the orders of my Elders and not have faith in myself,” he said, adding that people should have a blind faith in God and in their career. “There’s a reason why Muhammad Ali prayed before those boxing matches and became champion. Get involved in prayer, meditation, whatever it is you believe in, include that in your practice and understand what faith is.”

New Property Management Contract Awarded for Red Line Extension Project

Contract executed with a 60 percent Disadvantaged Business Enterprises (DBE) participation commitment; the first of more to come under historic rail project and as part the agency’s mission to provide equitable opportunities

The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) is taking another important step as part of the transformational Red Line Extension (RLE) project with the awarding of a new, four-year property maintenance contract not to exceed $23.5M.

The property management contract was awarded to East Lake Management Group, Inc. by the Chicago Transit Board following a competitive bid process. The initial DBE goal for the contract was 30 percent, however the vendor surpassed that and has committed to a 60 percent DBE participation goal, which translates into more than $14M of the overall contract value being made available to disadvantaged business enterprises.

“We have always talked about how the Red Line Extension is more than just a transit project, but truly an investment that will provide much needed economic opportunities for the community,” said CTA President Dorval R. Carter, Jr. “This is just the start and CTA will continue to seek out and promote additional contracting opportunities to disadvantaged local businesses throughout the life of this project—all as part of our vision and commitment to provide jobs and equitable opportunities under this historic investment.”

The RLE project has several parcels that will need to be acquired in anticipation of a design build contract being awarded at a future date. CTA will own the parcels before the design

builder takes control of them, during this time the contracted property manager will secure and maintain the properties. The outside services from the property manager is necessary due to the effort and timeline obligations that are needed to protect these properties.

In alignment with CTA’s goals, the RLE project is seen as a tool to help strengthen economic prospects for members of the surrounding communities – both through career and business/ contracting opportunities. This new contract speaks to that mission, especially since the vendor was able to provide more DBE participation than what was originally planned.

The planned $3.6 billion RLE project will extend the Red Line from the existing southern terminal at 95th Street to 130th Street. As part of this project, four new accessible rail stations will be added, plus a new a modern, efficient railcar storage yard and maintenance facility that will benefit users of the entire Red Line. The 5.6-mile rail line extension will provide long-awaited and much needed connection to jobs, education, commerce, and opportunity, while also serving as a catalyst for economic development that benefits the entire City of Chicago.

CTA will be hosting numerous outreach events leading up to the start of project work to encourage participation by DBE-certified firms and other minority owned firms that wish to participate in the project to meet the DBE goals that will be assessed.

For more information on this project, visit transitchicago. com/rle.

In addition, recent water emergencies in Jackson, Mississippi and Dixmoor, IL provides youth a recent example of how close to home a water crisis could occur at any time. The water crisis in Jackson, Mississippi was essentially the result of flooding that overwhelmed Jackson’s largest water treatment plan and Dixmoor’s water system suffered multiple breaks that prompted residents to also be without clean water.

Each contest winner received a Steele Swag Bag with informational literature about the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, an offer to tour one of seven MWRD Water Reclamation Plants, passes to visit other water related attractions such as Navy Pier and Museum of Science and Industry. The Steele Swag Bag also includes an opportunity to enrich the student’s cultural experience with passes to the DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center along with other cool gifts for them to enjoy throughout the year.

The Steele “Imagine a Day Without Water,” contest was a success. The participating students were creative, curious, and excited to explore ways to conserve water and protect the environment. Thank you to the school principals, teachers, and parents for their support. The student’s success in participating would not have been possible without their leadership and guidance.

During the quarter, the Speaker’s caucus reported raising over $14 million. The House Democratic Caucus raised over $12 million. Speaker Welch’s total for the year was over $45 million. The result– the House’s historic supermajority and a unanimous demand for a second term of leadership for Speaker Welch.

“We raised funds, we worked together, and we really dug into the fight for the people of Illinois,” said Speaker Welch. “I am extremely thankful to each of our supporters and every single member of our caucus. We are bringing the most Democrats to the legislature in modern history to fight for working families in all 118 districts from Chicago to Cairo, from Winnetka to Washington Park, and from Westchester to Savanna. I am thankful to our caucus for trusting me to continue to lead us forward. Now we have to get to Springfield and continue doing the work of the people.”

With 14 newly elected members of the Illinois House, Democrats are the most diverse in their representation of the people. In addition to re-electing the first African-American Speaker of the House, the general assembly welcomed the first Vietnamese American, two of the first Muslim Americans, and the first Korean American to serve and represent downstate. The diversity of heritage, race, gender, age, and ideology further solidifies the House Dems as the caucus that looks like Illinois.

HUNTER SUPPORTS THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE, ACCESS TO ABORTION

Following the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade, State Senator Mattie Hunter proudly voted to protect abortion rights in Illinois through a measure that passed out of the Senate Wednesday.

“Abortion is a health care issue, and a medical service that could potentially save someone’s life, especially in regards to combatting maternal mortality,” said Hunter (D-Chicago). “There are so many reasons abortions are needed, none of which is the government’s business. What is the government’s business, is protecting the right to have one.”

Researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder found that under a nationwide total abortion ban, there could be a 24% increase in expected maternal deaths nationwide, with Black women projected to see a 39% increase.

If signed, House Bill 4664 will enshrine legal access to abortion care in the state of Illinois and provide protections for health care professionals from restrictive laws from other states. Illinois could become a safe haven for those who need abortion within the state, and in surrounding states in the Midwest.

Hunter has championed various health care issues over her two decades in the senate, including measures to reduce maternal mortality.

“Everyone deserves the right to choose what they do with their own body,” said Hunter (D-Chicago). “I voted to ensure that here in Illinois, that right will remain for anyone who needs access to an abortion.”

House Bill 4664 awaits the governor’s signature.

After beginning her career at General Electric, Hill spent nearly two decades at Invenergy in roles within engineering, procurement and construction and has been involved in over 10,000 MW of renewables projects including wind, solar, and energy storage. Through her decades of project experience, she has been praised by colleagues and industry peers as a focused leader that maintains positive relationships while bringing diverse groups together to execute strategic goals.

“Utopia is the ultimate professional who pos -

sesses the desire and expertise needed to continued riving this industry forward,” said Jim Murphy, President and Corporate Business Leader at Invenergy. “We are thrilled to continue working with Utopia in this vital role. Her experience and leadership skills will help equitable clean energy development and innovative clean energy solutions.”

“Utopia accepts this role as CEO of Reactivate at a time when underserved communities face tremendous challenges given inflation, recession and rising energy costs, “said Damien Dwin, Founder and CEO of Lafayette Square. “She brings integrity and thoughtfulness to the mission of generating profits while delivering impact on the lives of underserved people.”

“I am humbled and honored to be chosen to lead our diverse, innovative and dynamic team,” said Hill. “As someone who grew up in a working-class community that experienced disinvestment and the associated climate and health impacts, I understand the importance of working toward a just and equitable energy future. I look forward to working with industry partners, businesses, and community leaders as we advance the goals of Reactivate.”

“Utopia has been very clear conveying her vision to build a clean energy infrastructure, where everyone benefits, not only from the technology, but also from the socioeconomic opportunities that are created as a result of the infrastructure buildout, “said Adewale OgunBadejo, Vice President of Workforce Development at GRID Alternatives. “She’s not scared to have tough conversations to ensure the work being done is equitable and inclusive, and that there is a real investment in local communities. I don’t think there is a better representation of leadership outside of what I’ve seen organizationally at GRID, than Utopia.”

Hill graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in Aerospace Engineering. She previously served as the Board Vice-President for the Boys & Girls Club of West Cook County. She also co-founded the employee resource group Black and Brown @ Invenergy. She shares her home with her husband and three teenage children.

Reactivate, a JV powered by Lafayette Square and Invenergy, is a renewable energy company that develops, owns, and operates renewable energy projects to improve the lives of people in low-to-moderate income and energy transition communities across the country. Reactivate’s primary focus areas are community solar, small-scale utility, and next generation projects. Reactivate seeks to create positive social and environmental impact in underserved communities by delivering renewable energy, environmental benefits, job opportunities, energy cost savings and opportunities for minority and women-owned businesses.

Dr. Monique Caradine-Kitchens is the Cover Story of Speakers Magazine January Issue Talking About Living in the Overflow

(Black PR Wire) The new year issue of Speakers Magazine is online and hard copies will be distributed to monthly subscribers and others in their network of outlets. The cover features Dr. Monique Caradine-Kitchens, who is the founder and president of OverFlow Enterprises, LLC, which is the premiere personal development company that helps women fix their relationship with money so they can build wealth.

“We Black women do it all. And it can be a struggle to earn what we’re worth and reach for that bigger life,” says Caradine-Kitchens.

“Many times, we weren’t shown the way. We need practical financial skills—but we weren’t taught them. Often times, we don’t have a financial cushion or generational wealth. We have the hunger—but we need the support,” she added.

That’s why she created the system, space, podcast (SisterNomics) and support network to normalize conversations about money, teach financial skills that generate cashflow so Black women can build a legacy and make an impact.

Her passion for this mission came as a result of working in a high-visibility career for two decades in the media but never earning what she was worth. Eventually, she realized that building wealth starts first with your mindset.

After doing the work to transform her own

money mindset, Caradine-Kitchens launched OverFlow Enterprises LLC. She is expanding her brand as an author, podcaster, trainer and Certified Money Breakthrough Coach for women leaders and entrepreneurs.

Prior to OverFlow Enterprises, Caradine-Kitchens held on-air positions at both WVON Radio in Chicago and My50 Chicago (a FOX affiliate). She hosted and produced community-focused programs and became known as one of the top talk-show hosts in the nation.

In the Speakers magazine January issue are also six other featured speakers:

Abbott, Blood Centers of America

Launch First-of-its-Kind Mixed Reality Experience for Use During Blood Donation

LAS VEGAS, PRNewswire -- Abbott (NYSE: ABT) and Blood Centers of America are unveiling an innovative new mixed reality experience for use during blood donation.

The mixed reality technology is an immersive digital experience designed to improve the blood donation process, attract new donors and motivate a younger generation to give blood. The effort intends to address the global challenge of sustaining a reliable blood supply.

“This innovative use of mixed reality is the most recent example of how Abbott is creating leading-edge technology to address a key health care need in the world – maintaining the blood supply,” said Alex Carterson, divisional vice president, medical, scientific and clinical affairs, Abbott. “Not only is it an immersive and unique use of mixed reality controlled completely through eye tracking, it’s a high-tech and creative way to improve the donation experience and make it more appealing for people to participate.”

The mixed reality experience allows blood donation professionals to safely conduct the donation and interact with donors at every step of the process. Donors’ eyes are always visible during donation to ensure constant monitoring and evaluation. Participants wear lightweight mixed reality headsets to enter a digital world but remain fully aware of their surroundings, ensuring a seamless, convenient and safe donation.

Abbott, a global leader in screening blood and plasma, is partnering with Blood Centers of America, the largest blood supplier network in the U.S., to introduce this new technology which was first showcased during CES (the Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas.

The mixed reality experience was designed based on research that natural settings are the most preferred environment as donors give blood. Participants visit a whimsical garden while listening to soothing music, planting seeds that grow into colorful trees and flowers.

The experience is currently being piloted on a limited basis at select Blood Centers of America locations nationwide.

One of the biggest challenges facing the sustainability of our nation’s blood supply over the last decade is the loss of a significant portion of donors under the age of 30. On average only 3% of the U.S. population donates blood each year, and a recent poll of U.S. adults showed that only 15% of 18-to34-year-olds donated blood in 2020.

“We’re always looking for ways to cultivate the next generation of blood donors and find younger people interested in giving,” said Harpreet K. Sandhu, CEO, Stanford Blood Center (Palo Alto, Calif.) and chairperson of Blood Centers of America. “Some people are hesitant to donate for a variety of reasons or just don’t think about giving blood. Since the need for blood is constant, we’re contin -

Silent Night Therapy Announces Its “New Year, New Sleep” Initiative

WEST BABYLON, N.Y., PRNewswire -- The sleep specialists at Silent Night Therapy are proud to announce their “New Year, New Sleep” initiative aimed at helping those in our community start 2023 off right by improving their sleep quality and overall health.

Getting good sleep is important for various reasons. Adequate sleep helps to improve physical health by reducing the risk of conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure and obesity. Sleep also helps to improve mental health by reducing stress, sharpening focus, improving creativity and problem solving, while increasing feelings of well-being. Making better sleep a priority in the new year can improve your overall health and make you more productive throughout the day.

Sleep apnea is a serious issue affecting adults and harming the health of many by depriving the body of oxygen. It can lead to high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular problems. It can also cause depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues.

For a long time, Continuous Positive Airway Pressure machines, or CPAPs, were the gold standard in sleep appliances. However, 20 years of data suggest that only 34% of patients are adhering to proper use of the CPAP device. Studies show that many techniques for improving compliance have had no effect, suggesting CPAP can no longer be considered the gold standard of sleep apnea treatment.

ually looking for smart new ways that will appeal to people who have never donated before or may be apprehensive. The mixed reality experience is a terrific way to get those people interested in participating. It adds a fun, interactive element to donation and it’s easy and convenient for blood centers to use.”

Mixed reality is similar to virtual reality but allows users to see the real world around them as they immerse themselves in a digital world, whereas in virtual reality, users only experience the digital world. The mixed reality journey uses Microsoft HoloLens 2, the world’s first self-contained holographic computer, enabling hands-free interaction with three-dimensional digital objects and a library of applications. Donors are offered a quick tutorial on the headsets and the mixed reality world prior to use. The headsets can be adjusted for each donor’s comfort and are easily integrated into the donation process.

“At Microsoft, we’ve seen the impact digital technologies can have in healthcare – from empowering health team collaboration and increasing clinician productivity to enhancing the patient experience,” said David C. Rhew, M.D., global chief medical officer and vice president of healthcare, Microsoft. “We’re pleased to see Abbott embrace mixed reality to create a positive experience for blood donors and to encourage the public to donate.”

As part of the effort to launch this new technology, BCA and Abbott are asking people to pledge to donate blood now and sign up to be notified when the mixed reality experience becomes available in their local area. To learn more about becoming a regular donor and pledge to donate, visit bethe1donor.com/CES.

There are several examples of improper use of a CPAP machine that can make the treatment less effective or even cause harm. Some of these include:

Not using the machine consistently: CPAP therapy is most effective when used every night, but some people may stop using it because they find it uncomfortable or have difficulty adjusting to it.

Not adjusting the machine correctly: The pressure setting on the CPAP machine may need to be adjusted to match the person’s needs, and if it is not set correctly, it can make the treatment less effective or even cause discomfort.

Not cleaning the machine regularly: CPAP machines and accessories need to be cleaned regularly to prevent infection and ensure the machine is working properly.

Not using the mask correctly: Using the mask incorrectly can cause leaks and make the treatment less effective.

Not getting the right size mask: A mask that is too large or too small can cause discomfort and leaks, making the treatment less effective.

Not using humidification: Dry air can cause nasal and throat irritation.

An oral appliance device is an alternative treatment option for those who are CPAP intolerant. The device works by gently repositioning the jaw and tongue to keep the airway open. Some benefits of an oral sleep appliance include:

They are custom fitted and more comfortable to wear than a CPAP machine.

They make no noise compared to loud CPAP machines.

They are portable and easy to travel with.

They do not require electricity to operate.

They are easy to clean and maintain.

It is important to consult a sleep specialist to get the proper diagnosis and treatment plan. At Silent Night Therapy, we help patients each step of the way on their journey to better sleep and a healthier life - while staying true to our philosophy of treating patients like family and creating an experience that will exceed expectations. So, if you want to start the new year off right, contact Silent Night Therapy to discuss if an oral sleep appliance is right for you!

The sleep apnea experts at Silent Night Therapy have seen firsthand how lack of sleep can impact your physical and mental health.
