ORGANIZATION WANTS TO

The organization was founded to address the number of Black residents from the community who were leaving, because jobs were not available, and it caused destabilization. briefly NEW LEAF ILLINOIS CELEBRATES EXPUNGEMENT MILESTONES, LOOKS FORWARD TO THE FUTURE With 2022 in full swing, New Leaf Illinois will continue its efforts to expunge cannabis records for Illinoisans across the state. Last year, New Leaf provided services to residents in more than 60% of Illinois counties – helping people of all demographics get a fresh start by removing barriers to employment, education, housing and more. New Leaf Illinois launched in November 2020, and last year was its first full year serving Illinois. “Our 2021 work shows a strong baseline for growth and expansion, but we know there are many more people eligible,” said Beth Johnson, an attorney and Project Manager for New Leaf Illinois with the Illinois Equal Justice Foundation. “We’re eager to continue our outreach efforts and increase our impact.” New Leaf Illinois will continue to offer free cannabis expungement services to the estimated 34,000 Illinoisans with records that were not automatically cleared after the state’s legalization of cannabis. With a network of 20 legal aid and advocacy organizations across the state, New Leaf is committed to overturning past cannabis convictions which disproportionately impacted Black and Latino communities. “In 2022, our goal is to help as many folks as we can to expunge their past cannabis records,” said Johnson. “For those who are confused about whether their record has been automatically cleared or not, or whether they are eligible, please reach out to New Leaf — we can help you navigate the process.” New Leaf helps people determine their eligibility for relief through an easy-to-use online registration portal www.newleafillinois.org or via phone at (855) 963-9532. Legal aid organizations within the New Leaf Illinois network provide free services in every region in Illinois. CITY TREASURER MELISSA CONYEARS-ERVIN INTRODUCED CITY ORDINANCE TO MANDATE FOSSIL FUEL DIVESTMENT Chicago City Treasurer Melissa Conyears-Ervin, in partnership with Alderpeople George Cardenas (Ward 12 & Chair, Environment Committee), Scott Waguespack (Ward 32 & Chair, Committee on Finance), Maria Hadden (Ward 49) and Daniel La Spata (Ward 1), introduced an ordinance in the Chicago City Council to mandate the divestment of city funds from fossil fuel companies, an important step toward ensuring a clean energy future for our city and our planet. Treasurer Conyears-Ervin is the chief sponsor of the ordinance, which already has the support of Mayor Lori Lightfoot. “As City Treasurer, it is my responsibility to ensure that our city’s funds are managed sensibly and in a way that creates a stable fiscal future for Chicago and its residents,” said Treasurer Melissa Conyears-Ervin. “It is also my responsibility to ensure that our investments are reflective of our values, and that’s why I’m proud to introduce an ordinance that will mandate city funds be divested from fossil fuel companies. When I first took office, I chose to divest from fossil fuels to protect the health of our residents, our city, and our planet. In passing this ordinance, we will be sending a message that Chicago is permanently leaving dirty energy in the past and welcoming a clean energy future for generations to come.” The ordinance will mandate this practice moving forward to ensure city money is not reinvested in fossil fuels. If passed, the ordinance will require the City Treasurer to update this exclusion list and report to the City Council Committee on Finance whether any changes have been made at least annually.

Organization wants to bolster the community Continued from page 1 The goal is to create makers spaces along 79th Street where there are vacant storefronts. There are already artists in the space, two fine artists, a graphic designer and a photographer. It will be a makers space as well as a gallery space for artists to host exhibitions. People also will be able to rent the space and host events. The Greater Chatham Initiative was able to make Artists on the 9 happen because of Landmarks Illinois and the City of Chicago’s Department of Planning and Development, along with Pangea Cares. Sims Fears believes positive street traffic is necessary for community vitality. The Greater Auburn Gresham Development Corporation, a partner of the Greater Chatham Initiative, won the Chicago Prize in 2020. That is also a sign of vitality for that community and the surrounding areas because of the development and jobs it will bring. Chicago Public Schools Celebrates Black History Month with Chicago Chef Chloe Gould Chicago - Chicago Public Schools (CPS) hosted a Black History Month Cooking demonstration with Chef Chloe Gould, a Dunbar High School graduate and caterer on Wednesday, Feb. 16. Chef Gould served jambalaya to students at Pershing Magnet School and presented her recipe for chicken curry jambalaya which she later cooked with Dunbar Vocational Career Academy culinary arts students in the school’s teaching kitchen. The dish was featured on the District’s lunch menu today as the District-wide Black History Month meal. “It’s not every day that you get the chance to create dishes for hundreds of thousands of children across the city,” said Chef Gould. “It’s especially meaningful to celebrate with students during Black History Month. I’m excited to share some of my signature southern cooking with CPS students.” The event with Chef Gould was among the myriad ways District schools have celebrated the month with many hosting guests, leading readings, essays contests, poetry symposiums, musical and theatrical performances and more, including professional development for faculty and staff. CPS’
food vendor, Aramark, joined today’s efforts by donating all of the ingredients needed for Chef Gould’s presentations and cooking lessons. CPS Board of Education Member Elizabeth Todd-Breeland also attended Wednesday’s cooking session at Dunbar. Chef Gould, the owner of DixiePura, a catering company that specializes in culinary classes and personal chef services, is described as a “food translator” for her ability to introduce culturally diverse flavors into American dishes. After culinary school she traveled abroad and returned to Chicago to train students in the culinary arts at CPS as a chef instructor. “Bringing the flavors inspired by Southern cuisine into our schools gives students the opportunity to celebrate Black culture while learning about the importance of nutrition and the culinary arts,” said District Nutrition Support Services (NSS) Executive Director Jason Mojica. “This year, as we celebrate Black History Month, it is an honor to be joined by a CPS graduate and former CPS culinary instructor to celebrate the cultural contributions of generations of African Americans everywhere.”

National Public Housing Museum Exhibit Explores Englewood’s Land Sale Contracts and Segregation CHICAGO PRNewswire -- A groundbreaking exhibition sponsored by the National Public Housing Museum, the nation’s first cultural institution dedicated to interpreting the American public housing experience, sheds new light on an unsavory Chicago real estate practice in the ‘50s and ‘60s: Selling homes to Black families using Land Sale Contracts, which imposed excessive monthly payments on buyers — many of whom lost their properties. Hunter’s CROWN Act passes Senate
A measure led by State Senator Mattie Hunter (D-Chicago) to end hair discrimination in the workplace passed the Senate recently. “No one should have to miss out on a job opportunity or miss a school graduation because of the hair that grows naturally out of their head,” Hunter said. “It’s 2022. As a nation, we should be past this petty discrimination.” Senate Bill 3616 – also known as the Create a Respectful and Open Workplace for Natural Hair (CROWN) Act – amends the Illinois Human Rights Act to provide that the term “race” includes traits historically associated with race, including, but not limited to, hair texture and protective hairstyles such as braids, locks and twists. A recent study from Dove uncovered that 80% of African American women felt they needed to switch their hairstyle to align with more conservative workplace standards in order to fit in. Hair discrimination occurs not only in the workplace, but in schools across the country. Last year, the Illinois General Assembly passed the Jett Hawkins Actin response to a four-year old boy in Chicago who was told his braids violated his private school’s dress code. “Black people should have the right to be expressive and creative with their hair and not worry about being ‘unprofessional’ or violating a conduct policy because of it,” Hunter said. “If it is wrong to judge by the color of one’s skin, isn’t it also wrong to judge by the way one styles their hair?” The Dove study also noted a bias against Black women with natural hairstyles in job recruitment. Black women with natural hairstyles were perceived to be less professional, less competent and less likely to be recommended for a job interview than Black women with straightened hairstyles and white women with either curly or straight hairstyles. Black women with natural hairstyles also received more negative evaluations when they applied for a job in an industry with strong dress norms. The CROWN Act passed out of the Senate recently and awaits further consideration from the House.
Joyce offering residents resources for tax assistance
State Senator Patrick Joyce (D-Essex) is encouraging families in need of assistance filing their 2021 income taxes to take advantage of new assistance programs offered by the Internal Revenue Service and AARP. “Filing taxes can be stressful, but there are resources available to help,” said Joyce. “Please share this information with friends and loved ones who need assistance filing their tax return.” The IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and the Tax Counseling for the Elderly programs offers assistance to individuals who earn $58,000 a year or less, people aged 60 or older, people living with a disability and taxpayers with limited English-speaking skills. The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Program provides free tax assistance, with an emphasis on taxpayers over the age of 50 or who have low-to-moderate income. AARP membership is not required to receive assistance. “With the tax filing deadline date of April 18 just around the corner, it is important for Illinois taxpayers to know that filing assistance is available,” said Illinois Department of Revenue Director David Harris. “Volunteers at these locations are certified by the IRS and ready to assist qualified individuals in filing their state and federal tax returns accurately and on time.” Individuals with questions should contact IDOR’s Taxpayer Assistance Division at 800-732-8866.
Stadelman-sponsored measure to promote public trust in local government passes committee
To restore public trust in local government officials, State Senator Steve Stadelman (D-Rockford) is sponsoring a measure alongside Senator Dave Syverson (R-Rockford), to create a process to place local officials on administrative leave for those accused of violating their oath. “We are ensuring that while criminal charges are pending, residents can have trust in their government to act appropriately,” Stadelman said. “This allows townships and counties the ability to remove bad faith actors within the system.” Senate Bill 3460 creates a process in which countywide elected officials or township officers can be placed on administrative leave in the wake of a criminal charge for a crime or any offense in violation of their official oath. Specifically, this measure allows county or township boards to vote to determine if the official should be placed on administrative leave with a three-fifths vote. The vote would then be sent to the state’s attorney for review of the crimes, and if it is determined the crimes were relevant to their duties, the state’s attorney would file a motion to place the elected official on administrative leave. “An elected official should not remain in office after violating an oath they took that breaks the trust of their community,” Stadelman said. “This process already exists for many other offices in Illinois – it only makes sense to apply this standard across the board.” This legislation was born out of corruption charges levied in 2020 against Winnebago County Coroner Bill Hintz. While his trial is ongoing, the coroner continued to serve in his elected position and is accused by the Attorney General of continuing to engage in additional misconduct. Senate Bill 3460 passed the Senate Executive Committee on Wednesday, February 16, 2022 and moves forward for further consideration.

Marty knows that most women are allowing fear to hold them back from accomplishing the goals they desperately want to achieve so now she is on a mission to connect with women who want more, women who have big goals, big dreams and are chasing them every single day. Education Department Announces $35 Million Competition to Improve Teacher Quality Program Aims to Recruit, Prepare, Retain and Support Teachers with a Focus on Equity, Diversity, and Increasing the Educator Pipeline The U.S. Department of Education is posting a Notice Inviting Applications for the Teacher Quality Partnership (TQP) program, which will award $35 million to bolster teacher preparation programs at the undergraduate or “fifth-year” level (Pre-Baccalaureate Models), as well as teaching residency programs for individuals new to teaching that integrate relevant academic content and meaningful clinical experience (Residency Models). “Across the country, we must continue the necessary work of developing a strong, diverse educator workforce for today and tomorrow,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. “High-quality educator preparation programs and teacher residencies are integral to this effort. Effective programs have positive effects on teacher candidates—including boosting the likelihood that they will remain in the profession—and they increase the impact that great teachers have on student learning.” In keeping with Secretary Cardona’s priorities, this competition also includes four competitive priorities focused on educator diversity; student social, emotional, and academic needs; and student equitable access to opportunities and resources. Research shows that high-quality residency models like those in the TQP program can expand the pool of well-prepared applicants entering the teaching profession, promote diversity of the workforce, and bring a wide range of experiences into the classroom to support students. In addition, the close partnership between school districts and colleges required by the TQP program ensures that preparation programs are closely aligned with practice. The Biden-Harris Administration believes that support for high-quality residency programs is a critical part of ensuring that all students have access to well-prepared and qualified educators, as these programs produce teachers who are more effective and likely to stay in the profession than less comprehensive pathways. Applicants are also encouraged to apply for partnership grants for the establishment of Grow Your Own (GYO) Programs. The Biden-Harris Administration has called for more investment in high-quality teacher
preparation, including GYO programs, to strengthen teacher pipelines and address shortages, and increase and support the growth of teachers. As with teaching residency programs, GYO programs can help address teacher shortages by increasing retention rates while also enhancing educator diversity. Additionally, the Leadership Program priority in the TQP program provides an opportunity for applicants to carry out an effective school leadership program that will prepare individuals for careers as superintendents, principals, early childhood education program directors, or other school leaders. The Department recognizes the value of supporting educators and is committed to the providing resources and opportunities that lift up the educator workforce. The Notice Inviting Applications is available here.
How Small Businesses Can Attract and Retain Employees (Family Features) Small business administrators are typically among the most competent multi-taskers, but even the most talented jugglers occasionally end up with too many balls in the air. Attracting and retaining employees doesn’t have to be part of your juggling act; in fact, having the right team can make the rest of your business run smoother. As a small business administrator, you may wear many hats, such as running the front desk, ordering supplies, managing accounting, onboarding and more. When you have extra hands to allocate the work, your business is likely to be more efficient and productive. Make employee retention a priority for your business with these practices: Create a positive work culture When employees enjoy coming to work each day, it shows. Your customers recognize it, and your internal team can feel it, too. A positive work culture encourages excellence, forgives mistakes, and leaves plenty of room for having fun. You can create a positive culture by making sure expectations are clearly defined and giving feedback that is consistent and fair. Provide an appealing salary and benefits package A competitive salary that aligns
with expertise is an obvious edge in hiring top talent. You can become a more attractive employer by offering a benefits package that includes paid time off, insurance and other extras. Voluntary benefits, such as those provided by Unum and Colonial Life, offer customizable solutions for businesses and their employees. These benefits can provide flexibility to employees by catering to certain stages of life and lifestyles and to employers by offering various funding options like 100% employee-paid or employer-employee shared funding. With low premiums, many small business owners can achieve significant returns and invest in benefits to attract talent and retain loyal employees. Allow for flexible schedules In large part due to the pandemic, employees have learned to juggle their work and home lives like never before. The businesses who recognize this need have an edge, particularly for employees who need flexibility to care for family members. The degree of flexibility you can offer may vary depending on the business model. Communicating with your employees and working to make reasonable accommodations can go a long way toward attracting strong candidates and retaining current employees.

Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis Jr. release video for “Silly Love Songs” LOS ANGELES PRNewswire – “Silly Love Songs,” the Paul & Linda McCartney classic, has been released by 7-time Grammy Award Winners, Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis Jr. in a new music video tribute from the couple’s bestselling EE1 BMG album, “blackbird: Lennon-McCartney Icons,” a “Civil Rights are Human Rights” recording project, honoring Black History Month. “We lift our voices in honor of those whose voices have been silenced. When people become iconic in death, we fail to appreciate the great loss of happy, loving moments. Their joy and laughter is forgotten,” said Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis Jr., who are named by Clive Davis as the ‘First Couple of Pop & Soul,’ in a joint statement. “Our project’s theme is that Civil Rights are Human Rights … in this month of history, we share it with all of our brothers and sisters. This music is for the Silly Love Songs our ‘blackbirds’ of every color will never be able to sing.” It’s a time of Renaissance for Marilyn & Billy, who are featured in the Oscar and Grammy-nominated film, “Summer of Soul … Or, When The Revolution Could Not Be Televised,” directed by Ahmir ‘Questlove’ Thompson. President of Ghana Joins T.D. Jakes’ International Leadership Summit CHARLOTTE, N.C., PRNewswire -- The president of one of Africa’s wealthiest and most stable countries is bringing his international leadership and expertise to the International Leadership Summit. The annual conference, founded by T.D. Jakes, brings together aspiring and tenured entrepreneurs, leaders and influential change agents to revolutionize the future of leadership. At this year’s event, set to take place in Charlotte from March 31 to April 2, Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo will participate in a “master class” conversation with Jakes, during which the two will discuss creating economic opportunities, technology and the future of both nations. Widely regarded as a model of democracy, Ghana is one of the wealthiest and most progressive of Africa’s 54 countries. The West African nation is the continent’s largest producer of gold and the world’s second largest producer of cocoa. Akufo-Addo was first elected in January 2017 and reelected in 2020 for a second and final term. Since becoming president, Akufo-Addo has worked to build strong economic and cultural ties between his country and Africans in the diaspora, particularly African Americans. Last year, Twitter announced it would be moving its African corporate headquarters to Ghana. Akufo-Addo is a lawyer and a champion of human rights, justice and democracy. He has worked on constitutional cases to help protect the independence of the judiciary, the rights of citizens to demonstrate without police permits, and for equal access to state-owned media for all political parties. Jakes has spent the last 45 years serving and inspiring people on a global scale. In addition to his role as Bishop of The Potter’s House,
Jakes is a philanthropist, an educator, a real estate developer and a respected leader in the international business community. The annual International Leadership Summit will provide visionaries and leaders with the tools they need to become “master builders” who can construct a solid foundation and revolutionize the way they lead in an ever-changing world. Other speakers at this year’s summit will include business tycoon Janice Bryant Howroyd, author and political commentator Van Jones, pastor Joel Osteen and other key figures in business, entertainment, nonprofit and faith arenas. Registration for the conference is open at
ThisIsILS.org. “We are ecstatic President Akufo-Addo will be an integral part of our leadership summit,” said Jakes. “Ghana has nurtured a special relationship with African Americans dating back to its independence from Great Britain in 1957. President Akufo-Addo’s leadership has only strengthened that bond. As President, he has transformed Ghana into a tourist and relocation destination for Black Americans by creating easier paths to citizenship for them. I know our master class with him will enlighten, illuminate and transform many.” Located in Dallas, The Potter’s House is a 30,000-member nondenominational, multicultural church and humanitarian organization led by Bishop T. D. Jakes, twice featured on the cover of Time magazine as America’s Best Preacher and as one of the nation’s 25 Most Influential Evangelicals. The Potter’s House has four locations: The Potter’s House of Dallas, The Potter’s House of Fort Worth, The Potter’s House of North Dallas and The Potter’s House OneLA.

FAMILY LIVING 5 Ways to Rev Up Learning Fun With Toy Vehicles (StatePoint) Vroom, vroom! There’s no doubt about it. Toy vehicles are fun to play with. They’re colorful, interactive and let kids imagine exciting worlds beyond the playroom. They can also be a great way for little ones to learn new things. Here are five ways to rev up the learning fun at home with toy vehicles:
Darrell Garth President /Publisher Janice Garth Sales Manager General Manager Tia Carol Jones Managing Editior
1. Fire up the “STEAM” engine: Using ramps and other homemade racecourse props, kids can learn some elementary principles of engineering and physics. Observe how steeper inclines allow toy cars to accelerate faster and how smoother surfaces prevent friction from slowing them down. There’s a lot to discover while having fun.

2. “Drive” foundational skills: Some toys have built-in learning features, such as the Drop & Go Dump Truck from VTech. This interactive toy truck not only counts each colorful rock it drops into the bucket, helping kids master their 1-2-3s, it also engages budding motor skills, plays melodies and phrases, and teaches tools and colors.

3. Sharing is caring: As with many open-ended toys and games, toy vehicles provide fun opportunities for kids to practice sharing, taking turns and cooperating.

4. Eco-friendly fun: Kids are never too young to learn the importance of taking care of the environment. And when they play with the Sort & Recycle Ride-On Truck, they’re already doing their part. This recycling truck is made from plastic that’s 90% reclaimed, which means less waste goes into landfills. Beginner recyclers can hop on this lean, green recycling machine and drive around while learning about the “Three Rs” –reducing, reusing and recycling. The red heart, yellow hexagon and blue circle play pieces represent plastic, metal and paper, which kids can sort into the correct bin.

New words, new ideas: Playing with cars, trucks and other toy vehicles can introduce kids to a huge list of vocabulary words and new ideas, from car parts and types of construction equipment to words like “beep,” “honk” and “go.” Help bring these concepts to life by playing along with your kids. Learning about the wide world of vehicles might even get the gears turning for some children. Today’s playtime could be tomorrow’s hobby or career.
