GOVERNOR PRITZKER ANNOUNCES NEW PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITIES AND THE CHAN ZUCKERBERG INITIATIVE

CHICAGO – Governor Pritzker today congratulated the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Northwestern University, and the University of Chicago for being selected by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) to launch the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Chicago (CZ Biohub Chicago) - a NEW biomedical research hub that will bring together leading scientific and technology institutions to study human tissue with the goal of creating new, groundbreaking therapeutics.

Selected through a highly-competitive yearlong application process, the Illinois team was chosen out of more than 60 applicants. The application was supported by Governor Pritzker, who committed $25 million in capital funds to provide support to the CZ Biohub Chicago. The Chicago site is the first expansion of the CZ Biohub Network, which launched in 2021 with CZ Biohub San Francisco. The site will include state-of-the-art laboratories, meeting spaces, a biofoundry and more. Northwestern professor Shana Kelley will serve as president of the new hub.

Through CZ Biohub Chicago, the state’s leading institutions will develop new groundbreaking technologies for studying human tissue to improve the understanding of inflammation, which could lead to new treatments for the inflammatory states that underlie many diseases.

The CZ Biohub Chicago’s collaborative model for scientific research will have profound implications for health and medicine, with the goal of creating new therapeutics, and catalyzing biotechnology in high impact areas such as regenerative medicine.

As home to some of the highest-ranked universities and hospitals in the world along with the renowned Argonne National Laboratory, the CZ BioHub Chicago will add to Illinois’ leadership in the bioscience, healthcare and research space. Thanks to the Pritzker Administration’s unprecedented investments in research and development, in recent years Illinois has bolstered its reputation as a worldclass hub for talent, research institutions, tech hubs, incubators and more.

President and CEO of Chicago Foundation for Women wants to transform people’s lives

Continued from page 1

Blakley is the President and CEO of Chicago Foundation for Women. The organization is a community foundation that raises money to provide resources and support to organizations that help women, girls, transgender and non-binary People.

“We believe that when you invest in women and girls, you really invest in transformative change in our communities and we try to make sure resources get to those in our communities who need them the most,” she said.

What informs the work Davis Blakley does now with Chicago Foundation for Women is growing up as a Black girl on the South side of Chicago, riding public transportation and going to public schools. She spent 10 years in the Chicago Police Department from 1991 to 2001, with eight of those years as a violent crimes detective, investigating sex-related offenses. She worked with women to try to get them justice and start the healing process.

During her time in City Hall, working with Mayor Rahm Emanuel, she had an opportunity to make a large impact in communities. With her time in higher education administration, she ensured people had educational opportunities and worked on creating equity in higher education.

Davis Blakley remembered her mother, who was a single mother, navigate systems and provide for the basic necessities for the family. She also remembered a lot of Black women in the community who wrapped their arms around her mother. She described it as the true spirit of community.

“My life is different because I can see the footprints of all those people. And, I feel a responsibility, then, to pay that forward and to make sure that … First Lady Michelle Obama said when you walk through the door of opportunity, do you close it behind you or do you reach your hand back and pull somebody else through the door … And, I see my life’s work as a continual pulling other people through the door and creating opportunities,” she said.

In 2017, Chicago Foundation for Women launched the Englewood Women’s Initiative, a place-based strategy that was created because the foundation listened to community voices. It was born out of Englewood’s Quality of Life Plan, which called for economic security and mobility for women and their families. The Chicago Foundation for Women worked with Teamwork Englewood and other organizations to create wraparound holistic approach with services to help women.

In 2021, Chicago Foundation for Women launched SHEcovery, which was born out of the pandemic and the inequities. The goal was to create equitable recovery for women during COVID-19. The four pillars included addressing the eviction crisis, getting women back to work, caring for caregivers and demanding an antiracist healthcare system.

The Chicago Foundation for Women also launched Willie’s Warriors, named after The Reverend Willie T. Barrow. It is a Black women’s leadership program with a focus on social justice, creating space and celebrating Black women. The women in the cohort create their own curriculum based on what they’re interested in learning. The women in the fifth cohort has just launched. There are 21 women in the cohort.

“It is so powerful when these sisters are in the room. Many times I leave the room inspired, and with some tears, because the stories are so powerful. Their leadership is already apparent,” she said, adding that for a lot of the women, in addition to the work they are doing, they do the unofficial work of diversity, equity and inclusion. “We create the space where they can separate those things, feel affirmed and supported and know they are on the right track and that they are excellent leaders, just as they are,” she said.

On March 29th, Chicago Foundation for Women will celebrate its Impact Awards. Eight women, who are nominated by the community, will be honored for the work they do. The Board Boot Camp will take place on April 8th and April 15th. The cost is $200.

Chicago Public Schools Partners with NASCAR and the Chicago Street Race to Engage Students Through STEM/STEAM

Inaugural ‘STEAM FEST’ to Feature K-12 Students in NASCAR-themed Design Competition at Field Museum on May 2

CHICAGO, Ill. – As excitement builds for 2023 Chicago Street Race Weekend, NASCAR and Chicago Public Schools (CPS) announced a collaborative initiative that will engage and inspire more than 22,000 students with racing-themed STEM and STEAM learning experiences and curriculum. The partnership was announced by CPS and Chicago Street Race officials today at the Field Museum in downtown Chicago with the help of 2023 DAYTONA 500 champion Ricky Stenhouse Jr., fresh off the driver’s victory at Daytona International Speedway on Sunday.

Beginning in March, CPS students

from all 43 STEM and STEAM schools will compete in an in-classroom design challenge culminating with the first-ever “STEAM Fest” in downtown Chicago on May 2. Nearly 500 student finalists will interact with NASCAR drivers, engineers and other industry STEM professionals at the Field Museum in the event’s championship round for a chance to attendthe Chicago Street Race Weekend.

In addition, CPS and NASCAR will work together to develop new STEM curriculum for eighth-grade students exploring fundamental science and engineering concepts within the sport. The NASCAR-themed curriculum, designed to address Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)Performance Expectations, will be finalized and introduced in middle schools during the 2023-2024 school year.

“Chicago was the birthplace of American auto racing in 1895 and we couldn’t be more excited to give our students an opportunity to be a part of that history through our District’s partnership with NASCAR,” said CPS CEO Pedro Martinez. ”Hands-on projects like STEAM Fest will empower students to make real-world connections with their studies that take them from the start-finish line all the way to the checkered flag and exciting career opportunities in STEM.”

The collaboration reflects NASCAR’s overarching commitment to the Chicago community and specifically programs that have a positive and lasting impact on local youth and teens.

to STEAM Fest at the Field Museum. At the event, schools will be assigned a new NASCAR challenge and compete against each other with the support of NASCAR Cup Series drivers and STEM professionals employed across the sport. The champion groups for each grade will receive complimentary tickets to the Chicago Street Race Weekend.

The curriculum integration, which will impact eighth-grade students at all CPS middle schools, will focus on the research and design process. Together with NASCAR engineers, CPS STEM faculty will identify specific engineering needs that exist in NASCAR and students will be tasked with building design proposals that address the real-word challenge with potential solutions.

A group of eighth-grade students will visit the site of the Chicago Street Race to learn first-hand how the curriculum material comes to life at a NASCAR event and the sport’s first street race in its 75-year history. The students will capture data and content leading up to the event, which will be included in the curriculum planned for launch.

For the seventh time in less than two years, Illinois has seen another improved bond rating. S&P Global Ratings – one of the nation’s major rating agencies – announced upgrades Thursday thanks to the fiscally responsible decisions made by Illinois Democrats.

State Senator Elgie R. Sims Jr. – the chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee and Majority Caucus Appropriations Leader – released the following statement:

“Today’s news is yet another sign the years of fiscal responsibility from the General Assembly is paying off. In recent years, we have been able put money back in the pockets of the state’s hardworking families and provide funding for the people who need the most help – all while paying down our bill backlog. Illinois is a standout state when it comes to putting the needs of our residents first, and we do so in a responsible and equitable way.

“S&P Global Ratings’ upgrade of Illinois bonds shows our fiscally responsible budgeting approach is working and is independent proof that our state is headed in the right direction. Our future looks bright and I look forward to continued collaborative efforts during this year’s budget negotiation process to keep the state on this upward economic trajectory.”

JENISE TERRELL Named CEO Of Public Allies

MILWAUKEE, PRNewswire -- The Board of Directors of Public Allies, a nonprofit dedicated to social justice and racial equity, is honored to announce the appointment of Jenise Terrell to the position of CEO. Jenise brings over 25 years of experience in nonprofit leadership, community development, and leadership development to this role. Most of her career has been focused on leveraging national service as a vehicle to create pathways to leadership for marginalized and disenfranchised voices across the United States.

Ms. Terrell began her journey in servant leadership as a Public Allies AmeriCorps member herself in 1997. Throughout her more than 20 year history with Public Allies, Ms. Terrell has held several roles, including Ally mentor and supervisor, field operations leader, fundraising strategist, government relations lead, Executive Vice President of Program Strategy, and most recently, Interim CEO. By accepting this new role, Jenise Terrell becomes the first alumni and first Black woman to hold the CEO title at this organization that has included such powerful women leaders as Vanessa Kirsch, Public Allies co-founder and first CEO, and former First Lady Michelle Obama, founding Executive Director of Public Allies Chicago.

Ms Terrell has been serving as Interim CEO for the past six months, deftly navigating Public Allies through transition following an organizational restructure. Following the organization being called into account for operating in alignment with its values, Ms. Terrell has driven the effort to work with the board, staff, alumni, and key organizational partners to reimagine a vision for the future.

“In a time of increasing inequity and division across the country, Public Allies’ values-based leadership practice, our signature Ally Program, and our talented, mobilized alumni network are needed now more than ever. We have the leadership, network, passion, and programming in place to support that vision.” says Ms. Terrell. “Everyday, I have the privilege of working with an amazing group of driven leaders. My appointment to CEO is a reflection of their brilliance, and a reflection of the values that we hold so dear. It is the greatest honor of my life to serve at the helm of the organization that not only helped shape my own leadership, but

has been responsible for launching the careers of thousands of noteworthy changemakers across our nation. I am enthusiastically committed to furthering the reach of our premise that leadership is an action to be taken, not just a position to be held.”

Over the course of its 30-year history, Public Allies has continued to transform lives and impact communities by choosing to see promise and potential in spaces where others see deficit. Centering the values of equity and proximate leadership, Public Allies has launched nearly 10,000 equity-centered and social justice-oriented leaders across sectors and across the country. With the rise in rhetoric that points to an increasingly divided nation, America needs the kinds of diverse, democratic leaders that Public Allies fosters. Public Allies’ mission is more relevant and critical now than ever before.

“Jenise Terrell so powerfully embodies the mission and values of Public Allies,” says Kanwar Singh, Chair of the Board of Public Allies. “Her appointment to this position represents a shift towards the alignment of our values with our practice. We can not help but recognize her as exactly the kind of leader our social justice movement needs today. We commit to walking the path alongside her and in support of her, and we extend our deepest gratitude to her for leading us into this next, exciting phase for Public Allies.”

Public Allies is a 501c3 national nonprofit committed to advancing social justice and racial equity by engaging and activating the leadership of all people. Our mission is to create a just and equitable society and the diverse leadership to sustain it. Since 1992, we have been a pioneer in recruiting and developing equity-focused change-makers. We have built a powerful network of more than 9000 proximate leaders who bridge races, ethnicities, socioeconomic levels, and cultures. Holding roles ranging from elected officials to heads of foundations and organizations, they reflect system re-designers, policy shapers, builders of inclusive cultures, and transformers of cultures – ones that accept, value, and view differences that we all bring to the table as strengths.

The PepsiCo Foundation and Doritos® SOLID BLACK® Invest in 16 Nonprofit Leaders for Black Changemakers Program

PURCHASE, N.Y., PRNewswire -- The PepsiCo Foundation and Doritos SOLID BLACK announced 16 Black nonprofit leaders selected for the 2023 Black Changemakers program, a program developed to uplift Black community leaders and amplify their bold voices to showcase the positive impact they are making. The nonprofit leaders selected for this year’s program represent organizations focused on education, youth development & mentorship, food insecurity, job training, financial literacy, and more.

Selected Black Changemakers will each receive a $50,000 grant, leadership development training with Indiana University’s Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, which provides nonprofit professionals and volunteers with research-based education and training, and regular one-on-one fundraising coaching, software, and technical assistance from Network for Good, a Certified B Corporation software company that offers software and coaching for charities and nonprofit organizations.

Black nonprofit leaders are historically underrepresented. Black-led organizations generate 24 percent less in revenue than white-led organizations. The PepsiCo Foundation and Doritos SOLID BLACK are committed to elevating Black leaders who are driving change within their communities.

“Many Black community and non-profit leaders face roadblocks in gaining access to capital to start, sustain and/or scale up their work. In partnership with Doritos SOLID BLACK, the Black Nonprofit Changemakers program, seeks to narrow that gap and provide participants with the assets they need to not only survive but to adapt and thrive,” said C.D. Glin, President of the PepsiCo Foundation and Global Head of Philanthropy for PepsiCo. “We believe lasting impact is led by those with lived experiences in local communities. These Black nonprofit leaders are proximate to the issues their organizations are striving to address and closest to the Black communities we’re working to support more broadly.”

This program supports leaders with philanthropic capital, personal and professional leadership development, fundraising capabilities, impact measurement, and network building. Additionally, the program offers an opportunity to amplify the nonprofits’ mission to inspire and catalyze others to support their cause.

“We’re proud to continue our partnership with the PepsiCo Foundation to grow the SOLID BLACK initiative and take our support of Black Changemakers to another level,” said Stacy Taffet, senior vice president of marketing, Frito-Lay North America. “Doritos has long been a brand that champions bold self-expression and we’re honored to continue providing a platform and resources to the bold individuals who are inspiring change and having an impact on their communities.”

The program’s capacity-building support aims to fuel participants’ dedication to making bold, positive impacts in their communities and arm them with the resources they need to drive transformative, lasting change. Chicago Treasurer’s Office and R. Seelaus & Co. Invest to Increase Homeownership and Renew Neglected Neighborhoods

Chicago, Ill. – More low-to-moderate income homebuyers in Chicago will now be able to realize their dreams of homeownership. Thanks to an innovative public and private partnership between the Chicago City Treasuer’s Office and R. Seelaus & Co., Inc., a certified women-owned, full-service investment and asset management firm, new capital has been invested in Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae that will make mortgages for single-family homes more accessible on the city’s south and west side neighborhoods.

The City Treasurer’s Office has initially invested $7 million with a commitment to invest a total of $25 million within the first quarter of 2023, in partnership with R. Seelaus & Co. About the investment, where the homeownership rates for Blacks is 35% and 43% for Hispanics, compared with 54% for Whites, Chicago Treasuer Melissa-Conyears whose office is the custodian and manager of all cash and investments for the City, said: “Access to homeownership is both a cornerstone to lift marginalized neighborhoods and a critical tool for building long-term wealth, and a more equitable future. We’re proud to be part of this initiative because it will get desperately needed mortgage capital into the hands of hard-working Chicagoans who historically and systematically have been blocked out of the American Dream of homeownership.”

The initiative began in late January 2023, with the Treasurer Office’s initial investment from cash holdings to lower-middle income loan programs under-written by Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae and exclusive to Chicago residents. These investments will allow low-to-moderate income Chicago residents to purchase their single-family dream home and instill confidence in the market that helps catalyze additional economic devel-

opment opportunities and contribute to a community’s well-being and vibrancy.

“Having investors target specific geographies and underrepresented groups with their capital will have a profound and lasting impact on the families and neighborhoods of Chicago that need it most,” said Annie Seelaus, CEO, Seelaus.

Seelaus was founded in 1984 by Richard Seelaus, originally as a municipal bond broker-dealer. The firm has since become a certified women’s business enterprise (“WBE”) and has grown into a full-service financial firm that is mission driven in its commitment to creating more opportunities for women in the financial services. Seelaus and its subsidiaries offer investment advisory, asset management, capital markets, brokerage, fixed income and equity trading, institutional sales, leveraged finance and insurance services. The R. Seelaus & Co., LLC subsidiary is a broker dealer registered with the SEC and member of FINRA, and the subsidiary Seelaus Asset Management, LLC, is an SEC Registered Investment Advisor (“RIA”). With various fixed income trading desks and more than sixty professionals, both entities serve individuals, families, public and private companies, non-profit organizations,

and institutional investors. The firm has offices in New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, North Carolina, and Massachusetts. For more information about R. Seelaus & Co., and its subsidiaries visit ww w.rseelaus.com.

Since her election in 2019, City Treasurer Melissa Conyears-Ervin has brought the public and private sectors together to provide comprehensive financial education and awareness programs that sharpen money management skills and

impar t the financial knowledge that puts people on the path to a more stable and prosperous future. The Treasurer is one of three city-wide elected officials in the City of Chicago, with the Mayor and the Clerk being the others. HUNTER JONES JOINS TEAM LAIRD AS AN ATHLETIC AMBASSADOR

MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif., PRNewswire -- LAIRD Apparel, the high-performance activewear and lifestyle brand founded by legendary big wave surfer Laird Hamilton, is excited to announce that professional surfer and filmmaker, Hunter Jones, has joined its team as a Brand Spokesperson and Athletic Ambassador.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Hunter honed his craft at El Porto in Manhattan Beach. Growing up skateboarding, Hunter caught his first wave at age 10 and knew he had found his calling. Since then, Hunter has been a local fixture at El Porto – where, as any local knows, the waves are less reliable than other breaks, so, they require a certain level of persistence and determination. A prepared and confident surfer, Hunter can take an average to below average El Porto wave and look like he’s riding Rincon, Lowers or another classic Southern California break. So, when he does make a guest appearance on a high-octane wave at Lowers, he knows what to do with it and he proves that perseverance pays off. The tenacity to get in the water every day, regardless of conditions, has prepared Hunter to excel on any type of wave.

Congressman Kweisi Mfume Introduces Legislation to Commemorate African American World War II Hero Doris Miller

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Kweisi Mfume (MD-07) announced the introduction of a pair of bills to commemorate the life and legacy of African American Mess Attendant Doris ‘Dorie’ Miller. During the attack on Pearl Harbor, Mess Attendant Miller manned an anti-aircraft gun and downed enemy planes, despite the fact that the racially segregated steward’s branch of the Navy was not trained to use anti-aircraft guns. Congressman Mfume’s bills seek to award the Medal of Honor and a Congressional Gold Medal to Mess Attendant Miller.

“Today is ‘Dorie Miller Day’ on Capitol Hill. Dorie Miller protected America, and we are all the beneficiaries of his bravery. His valiance is even more admirable because he courageously worked to save a democracy that he could not fully enjoy at that time, as the United States military did not become fully integrated until almost seven years after his heroism in World War II,” said Congressman Mfume. “I am honored to continue the work of my friend, former Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson, who had fought to give Mess Attendant Miller’s legacy the celebration of the Medal of Honor since 2001. And with my dual-tracked legislative effort to award both the Medal of Honor and a Congressional Gold Medal, Dorie Miller will finally be recognized with an American salute that is long overdue,” he concluded.

The Life of Doris ‘Dorie’ Miller Background

Born in Waco, Texas on October 12, 1919.

Son of Connery and Henrietta Miller.

Dropped out of school to support the family farm, worked parttime as a cook in a small restaurant in Waco.

Military Career

Enlisted in the United States Navy in September of 1939.

After bootcamp training, was assigned to the USS West Virginia as a messman.

Quickly moved up in the ranks from messman to ship’s cook, third class, and was stationed at Pearl Harbor.

Black sailors serving in the racially segregated steward’s branch of the Navy were not trained to use anti-aircraft guns.

On December 7, 1941, Doris Miller was doing laundry at around 8:00 a.m. when a Japanese torpedo hit his ship, anchored in Pearl Harbor.

He rushed to the main deck to help move his mortally wounded captain out of harm’s way and attend to other wounded sailors.

He then manned a 0.50-calibre anti-aircraft gun and fired at the attacking planes.

According to news stories and other sailors’ accounts, Doris Miller downed 2 to 5 enemy planes before he was forced to abandon ship.

National Awards and the Medal of Honor

Doris Miller was awarded a commendation from the Secretary of the Navy as well as the Navy Cross on May 27, 1942, in a ceremony at Pearl Harbor.

The Navy recently commissioned an aircraft carrier to be named after Doris Miller, and the town of Waco, Texas recently unveiled a riverside memorial.

Doris Miller has yet to receive the Navy’s highest award, the Medal of Honor.

Mr. Miller’s family and friends have fought for decades to convince the Navy to award Doris Miller with the Medal of Honor posthumously.

More than 15 cities have expressed support, and the U.S. Conference of Mayors adopted a resolution endorsing the effort in 2001.

Congress has introduced a resolution in support of the Navy awarding Doris Miller the Medal of Honor every year since 2015.

Decisions on military honors are typically reserved for the military, and the Navy has not yet decided to change course on Doris Miller’s status.

Medal of Honor Bill – Doris Miller

This bill authorizes the President to award the Medal of Honor, the highest military decoration in the United States Armed Forces, to Mess Attendant Doris ‘Dorie’ Miller.

Former Representative Eddie Bernice Johnson had fought to give Mess Attendant Miller’s legacy this recognition since 2001.

This legislation is endorsed by the National Association for Black Veterans (NABVETs) and the Dorie Miller Medal of Honor Committee.

Congressional Gold Medal Bill –Doris Miller

The second bill of this dual-tracked legislative effort to federally recognize Doris Miller awards him posthumously the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian award in the United States.

If approved by Congress, Doris Miller’s family would receive the medal and it would be displayed at the Smithsonian Museum.

“Today is ‘Dorie Miller Day’ on Capitol Hill.

Dorie Miller protected America, and we are all the beneficiaries of his bravery. His valiance is even more admirable because he courageously worked to save a democracy that he could not fully enjoy at that time, as the United States military did not become fully integrated until almost seven years after his heroism in World War II.”
