REP. ROBIN KELLY RELEASES 2024 KELLY REPORT ON GUN VIOLENCE
The report highlights voices of key lawmakers, survivors, advocates, and researchers working to end the public health crisis of gun violence.
WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Robin Kelly (IL-02) released The Kelly Report: A Vision for a Safer America. Congresswoman Robin Kelly pioneered this report as a one-of-a-kind Congressional analysis of the nation’s gun violence epidemic and a blueprint for ending the crisis.
The Kelly Report: A Vision for a Safer America brings together Members of Congress, survivors, academics, and gun reform advocates to examine the root causes and impacts of gun violence in America and provides a comprehensive set of legislative and policy recommendations to stop it. Contributors to the report include Congresswoman Lucy McBath (GA-07), CBC Chair Congressman Steven Horsford (NV-04), Gun Violence Prevention Task Force Chair Congressman Mike Thompson (CA-04), Congressman Maxwell Frost (FL-10), President of Brady United Kris Brown, former Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, Chairwoman of the Newtown Action Alliance Po Murray, President of the Community Justice Action Foundation Amber Goodwin, and many more.
Ten years ago, Rep. Kelly released the first version of this report after winning her seat in Congress on a platform of gun violence prevention. Rep. Kelly made headlines during her first full term for refusing to stand during moments of silence, demanding action instead of empty gestures. In the aftermath of the Pulse Nightclub shooting in 2016, Rep. Kelly joined Congressman John Lewis to lead a 26 hour sit in on the House floor demanding action on gun violence. Rep. Kelly has introduced numerous pieces of legislation to combat the gun violence epidemic.
“I came to Washington because I couldn’t stand to watch Congress do nothing while children were ripped away from their families day after day. I published the first Kelly Report in 2014 to address gun violence as the public health crisis it truly is and offer solutions that matched the scale of the epidemic,” said Congresswoman Robin Kelly. “Unfortunately, 10 years later, tens of thousands of lives are still lost to gun violence every year. There is still so much work to be done, and the 2024 Kelly Report charts a path forward for meaningful change. I am proud to bring together survivors, advocates, policy makers and research to say in one voice – enough is enough.”
AMMONS ENCOURAGES LOCAL STUDENTS TO APPLY FOR ILLINOIS LEGISLATIVE BLACK CAUCUS FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – State Rep. Carol Ammons, D-Urbana, is encouraging African American high school seniors and undergraduate students to apply for one of this year’s Illinois Legislative Black Caucus Foundation (ILBCF) scholarships online by May 31.
“We’re approaching that time of year where students nationwide are finding out what college they’ve gained acceptance to for this upcoming fall semester,” said Ammons. “The Caucus is committed to supporting African American students in continuing their education by providing the financial relief necessary for many families to explore these opportunities. I highly recommend local students take the time to apply for this scholarship.”
The ILBCF anticipates over $100,000 in scholarships will be awarded this year to help African American high school seniors and undergraduate students continue their education at a two- or fouryear institution this fall. Since 2002, the ILBCF has given over $1.5 million in scholarships to students. Interested applicants can learn more information and access the online scholarship form from now until May 31 at https://ilbcf.org/scholarships/.
Local Skater Performs On National Stage With Usher
Continued from page 1
BY TIA CAROL JONES
Blaylock likes the community that comes with roller skating. She said going to the roller-skating rink is like going to a family reunion. It is a stress reliever for her and it is how she stays in shape. She also likes travelling for skating and performing.
Blaylock recently performed with Usher during the Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show. She said performing with Usher was a lot of hard work, but it was also fun. She said the choreography changed up until the morning of the show, so she had to stay alert to everything that was happening.
“It definitely taught me a lot about how to focus and how to take care of your body in a completely different way to be a better performer,” she said.
Blaylock said the performance went by really fast once she got on stage. She worked for five weeks on the choreography for the performance, and it felt like it was a few seconds. She said it didn’t feel like work, it felt like she was living a dream. She created a bond with the other performers, with the team, the dancers and with Usher. She described it as a mind-blowing experience. She was inspired and had fun.
“Seeing myself right next to Usher, I was like, ‘wow, that’s crazy,’” she said.
Blaylock lived in New York City, working in the fashion and beauty industry for 10 years before returning to Chicago. Her and a friend created an online boutique with clothes that people can wear to skate and on other occasions. It is called Syd Exota and they created it because people liked the outfits they wore when they were skating. The boutique is available online and it is in collaboration with Rags, which is located at 87th and Sangamon.
Blaylock said her creativity for outfits came from seeing what the adults wore when they were skating. She would see women in catsuits and skaters in matching outfits. The freedom that people had with their outfits and their sexuality was something that inspired her to enter the fashion industry.
Blaylock didn’t get to see the full run of the show until a week before the performance. When she had the opportunity to view the whole Halftime show performance, she screamed at the head slide with excitement, not realizing how much of an impact the technique of her split performance had until she watched other people’s reactions to it.
Blaylock teaches skating at Kenwood Academy High School on Friday evenings. There is a roller-skating club at the school. Kenwood High School Principal, Ms. Karen Calloway had the idea for Blaylock to come in and teach the students how to skate. The club has inspired other students and even staff to come and skate. She likes being able to give back to the high school she graduated from. Blaylock wants to encourage others to skate. She said that you’re never too old to skate and you can start at anytime.
“It’s very fun, you’re going to work out and you’re going to meet people. We’re really nice and welcoming. It’s definitely a great experience,” she said.

Gov. Pritzker to Visit California to Promote Economic Development, Illinois Film Industry
Chicago— Governor Pritzker, joined by Illinois film officials and stakeholders, departed Sunday, March 24 for an economic development mission to California to promote Illinois to business and film industry leaders. Building on the success of Illinois’ Illinois Film Production Services Tax Credit, the Governor, alongside representatives from the Illinois Film Office and Illinois Production Alliance, met with major studios and distributors to discuss increased opportunities for investment in Illinois.
“The strides Illinois has made in growing our film and television production sector in recent years is nothing short of remarkable, and it’s time to ensure that every production company and studio knows exactly what we can offer them here in the Land of Lincoln,” said
Governor JB Pritzker. “This trip will be a chance to shed a light on what the Illinois Film Production Services Tax Credit as well as our increased film infrastructure can offer companies who may be looking to expand beyond Southern California.”
“When production companies choose Illinois, they not only get the benefits of the state’s Film Production Services Tax Credit, gorgeous locations, and top-flight infrastructure across the state, they also get access to a dedicated, talented workforce,” said Christine Dudley, Executive Director of the Illinois Production Alliance.
“One thing that everyone agrees on – labor, business, and government alike – is that bringing more film and television production to Illinois benefits everyone.”

$82.5 Million Earned for Cities, School Districts through Illinois Funds
SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois State Treasurer’s Office made nearly $120.6 million in investment earnings from the state investment portfolio in February, Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs announced.
An additional $82.5 million in gross investment earnings was earned for cities, villages, school districts, counties and other units of government that take part in the highly rated Illinois Funds local government investment pool operated by the Illinois State Treasurer’s Office.
investment pool the State Treasurer’s Office runs for state and local government agencies. The program enables school districts, park boards, library boards, township governments and others to pool their money and invest in a safe, liquid investment vehicle that exceeds industry benchmarks. The Illinois Funds has received the highest rating of AAA from Fitch, a national credit ratings agency.
Race, Ethnicity and Dementia Caregiving
In the intricate tapestry of caregiving, where love intertwines with sacrifice, disparities carve their presence into the fabric of each caregiver’s journey. It’s only in recent times that the spotlight of population-based studies has shifted to illuminate the stark racial contrasts within the realm of dementia caregiving, shedding light on the burdens and obstacles faced by Black and Hispanic caregivers.
“Every dollar we make through smart, safe investing is a dollar that does not need to be raised in taxes,” Treasurer Frerichs said. “The Treasurer’s Office can’t solve all of our state’s fiscal challenges by ourselves, but that doesn’t stop us from being part of the solution.”
Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs is the state’s Chief Investment and Banking Officer. He is responsible for the state investment portfolio and an investment pool for units of local government called Illinois Funds.
The state investment portfolio is one of the primary duties of the Illinois State Treasurer’s Office. State legislators budget public money that is collected, but that money is not spent all at once. State agencies, boards and commissions require assistance managing their cash and investing all remaining funds. That’s where the Office of the Illinois Treasurer steps in.
The Illinois Public Treasurers’ Investment Pool, called The Illinois Funds, is a local government
Key monthly metrics and more are available in The Vault, the transparency website that allows Illinois residents to see how the Illinois State Treasurer’s Office is working for them. The site is at iltreasurervault.com.
Here’s a detailed look at the investment earnings the Illinois State Treasurer’s Office made for February 2024:
*State portfolio. The Illinois State Treasurer’s Office earned nearly $120.6 million in earnings for the state investment portfolio in February. So far in 2024, the Office has earned $250.4 million for the state portfolio.
The interest rate earned for the state investment portfolio was 4.73% for February.
*The Illinois Funds. The Illinois State Treasurer’s Office made $82.5 million in gross investment earnings for participants in the Illinois Funds investment pool in February. So far in 2024, the Illinois State Treasurer’s Office has earned $170.5 million for the Illinois Funds.
The interest rate earned for the Illinois Funds was 5.48% for February.
Gov. Pritzker...Continued from page 2
“Through the competitive tax credit incentive enacted by Governor Pritzker, Illinois’ film industry is breaking records and proving its reputation as an industry leader,” said DCEO Director Kristin Richards. “The Illinois Film Office welcomes the opportunity to tout our successes while showing Hollywood studios and companies why they should consider doing business in Illinois.”
Governor Pritzker began his trip in the San Francisco Bay area, meeting with business executives to promote Illinois’s investments in quantum computing and manufacturing. Following these meetings, the Governor departed to Los Angeles for several days of meetings with film studio executives and major production companies to discuss Illinois’s tax credit for film production and other attractive incentives for the film industry. Gover-
nor Pritzker was joined by representatives from the Illinois Film Office and the Illinois Production Alliance.
In 2022, Governor Pritzker extended the landmark film industry tax credit through 2032. The incentive program, which offers tax credits for local labor and production expenditures, has been a key factor in Illinois landing major productions. Recently Illinois broke previous records for the film industry investment with 2022 seeing $700 million in production expenditures– far exceeding pre-pandemic levels. The State’s tax credit has resulted in a $6.81 return on investment for every dollar spent on the incentive, resulting in $3.6 billion in economic activity between FY17 and FY22. 94 percent of Illinois’s current film industry economic impact is attributed to the impact of the tax credit enacted by Governor Pritzker.
Amidst these revelations lies a sobering truth: nearly half of Black and Hispanic individuals grappling with dementia seek refuge in the care of their adult children, a striking comparison to the one-quarter of White individuals who do the same.
Yet, the burdens endured are far from alleviated. Black caregivers, steadfast in their commitment, often find themselves bearing heavier loads. They dedicate upwards of 40 hours per week to caregiving, a testament to their resilience in the face of adversity. Their role extends beyond mere companionship; they become essential pillars, providing aid with the Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), assuming roles of nurturer, confidant, and protector.
However, alongside the emotional and physical strains of caregiving, a different burden persists - the weight of financial hardship. Particularly, Black male dementia caregivers find themselves disproportionately impacted, standing 3.3 times more likely to grapple with economic challenges than their counterparts.
Despite the undeniable necessity for respite, Black caregivers are noticeably less inclined to seek such reprieve, underscoring the enduring gap in accessibility to support services. The journey of caregiving, laden with emotional and physical tolls, exacts its toll on mental well-being, with discrimination looming as a dark cloud over the welfare of African American caregivers.
Yet, amidst the trials, glimmers of resilience and fortitude emerge. Black caregivers, more prone than their White counterparts, discover solace in the affirmative aspects of caregiving, fostering bonds that transcend the constraints of illness. Research even suggests they experience marginally higher levels of psychological wellbeing, a testament to the potency of love amidst adversity.
However, the path to caregiving is fraught with hazards. Hispanic, Black, and Asian American caregivers find themselves grappling with heightened care demands, diminished external support, and elevated rates of depression, underscoring the pressing need for culturally attuned support systems.
In the mosaic of caregiving, the ties that bind are often woven from the threads of familial and social support. For Black caregivers, the presence of robust support networks serves as a beacon of hope amid the darkest hours.
Yet, amidst the challenges, there exists a glimmer of hope. Through resilience, solidarity, and unwavering love, caregivers of every shade navigate the labyrinth of dementia, their narratives a testament to the indomitable spirit of humanity in confronting adversity.

Black Owned Fintech Novae, Joins Direct Selling Association
CONYERS, Ga., PRNewswire -- CEO Reco McCambry announced that Novae has been accepted into the Direct Selling Association after a unanimous vote by their Board of Directors. The acceptance is a major step for Novae, which has now appeared on the Inc 5000 list of America’s fastest-growing businesses for three years running.
The DSA was established over 100 years ago to support independent sales professionals, and includes giants in the finance, tech, wellness, energy, and lifestyle spaces. Members range from ubiquitous direct selling companies like ACN, Amway, Avon, Primerica, and Mary Kay to modern brands whose memberships may surprise readers like pawTree, Ambit Energy, Scentsy, and The Pampered Chef.
ucts, and Cobrand and White Label programs in which owners with existing businesses can add Novae products and services to their offerings while Novae and their partners do all the work behind the scenes.
This acceptance also comes on the heels of Novae’s rebranding as Novae: The Credit and Money Company, to reflect the range of services the company has expanded into in recent years.
Novae is unusual among fintech companies in its goal of reducing wealth inequality. Novae’s services are geared toward helping people obtain home and business ownership. This mission is also reflected in Novae’s direct sales business model, in which Novae sales professionals effectively own their own businesses.
Novae offers both an affiliate program in which new sales professionals and entrepreneurs sell Novae prod-
In direct sales models, sales professionals are responsible for making their own product sales through platforms created by the direct sales company, but they also keep most of the profit from those sales for themselves.
It is this business model that the Direct Selling Association was created to support back in 1910. The association offers education, networking opportunities, and professional development to its members; as well as industry research for the marketplace and lobbies for direct sales companies in Washington, D.C. It also has a code of consumer protection ethics to which member organizations are required to adhere.
Novae CEO Reco McCambry himself started working as a direct sales professional as a college student, and soon realized that this business model gave him the potential to develop more wealth and more freedom than the employer-employee model. He subsequently resolved to run his own company after having a tremendous amount of success as an independent direct salesperson in his 20s. His mission was to serve an unmet market need while encouraging his direct sales force to develop their entrepreneurial, business, and life skills.
McCambry believes that Novae’s ethos of focusing on traditionally underserved consumers and entrepreneurs is responsible for the company’s successful growth.
“Novae’s services are designed for people who have

historically been shut out of financial education, lending, and business support,” McCambry said in an interview.
“There is huge hunger in this market. Everybody knows that the people who are paid the least are often the hardest workers. And when major banks often have not provided financial services to these people, there’s huge potential for financial growth that isn’t being tapped by existing business models.”
Novae’s most recent product releases have included new offerings for both businesses and private individuals.
On the business side, Novae has expanded their debt help program to include debt restructuring for businesses, which promise to lower business’s monthly debt payments down to roughly 2% of their total debt, and rolled out a free service to assist individuals in setting up their LLCs. They’ve also added services to assist with applications for trademarks, EINs, business licenses, sales tax permits, and more.
On the personal finance side, Novae has expanded its financial education and legal assistance services to include trust and will estate planning services which use cutting-edge technology to reduce labor costs and pass the savings along to customers. This represents Novae’s latest effort to not only help others build a financial legacy, but to help them protect it and pass it on.
With Novae continuing to expand into new territory in terms of both services offered and market share, CEO McCambry is confident that the company’s membership in the Direct Selling Association will lead to great things.
“This is an organization that has been there for sales professionals and providing industry credibility and integrity since its founding in 1910,” McCambry said. “Novae is proud to now be part of that legacy.”

The series, titled THE GATES, follows the lives of a wealthy Black family in a posh, gated community. Michele Val Jean, who has written more than 2,000 episodes of daytime dramas and won multiple Daytime Emmy and WGA Awards for her work on THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL and “General Hospital,” will serve as writer and showrunner. Val Jean will also be an executive producer alongside Sheila Ducksworth, Leon Russell, Derrick Johnson and Kimberly Doebereiner. THE GATES will be produced by the CBS Studios/NAACP production venture in partnership with P&G Studios, a division of Procter & Gamble.

I also want to thank CBS’ George Cheeks, NAACP’s Derrick Johnson and P&G’s Marc Pritchard for their

New National Data Shows Strong STEM Aptitude Among Black Students, But Reveals Limited Exposure to In-Demand Careers
AMERICAN FORK, Utah, PRNewswire -- YouScience®, the leading technology provider dedicated to solving the skills gap crisis for students and employers, and Black Girls Do STEM, a 501c3 nonprofit organization empowering Black girls to achieve equitable Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) representation, today announced the release of the 2024 Black Students and STEM Report. This new report reveals that Black students across the nation possess the aptitudes for in-demand STEM careers, but lack interest in pursuing them. This indicates that a significant career exposure gap exists, likely due to underrepresentation in STEM careers.
The career exposure gap is measured by the difference between a student’s aptitudes and interests, and identifies which careers a student hasn’t been exposed to and which ones might be a good fit. Most notably, the 2024 Black Students and STEM Report found:
A 75% exposure gap in Advanced Manufacturing
A 57% exposure gap in Health Science
A 56% exposure gap in Finance
A 53% exposure gap in Architecture & Construction
A 51% exposure gap in Computers & Technology
The 2024 Black Students and STEM Report combines data from YouScience and Black Girls Do STEM to highlight Black student career exposure gaps for in-demand STEM careers and the importance of programs that address the gaps. The report analyzed anonymized data from 328,000 Black U.S. middle and high school students who took YouScience’s Aptitude and Career Discovery tool from 2019 to 2023. This is the only scientifically-backed tool to apply computerized performance measures of aptitudes, interests, and AI-powered algorithms to activities that help identify best-fit career matches of all students, regardless of race or gender.
Historically, there has been limited Black representation in STEM-related fields. As of 2021, 9% of the STEM workforce was Black, which was an increase from 7% in 2011. While this growth is positive, new solutions are needed to help Black students explore STEM-related education and careers earlier.
“As a Black woman in STEM, I have seen first-hand the lack of representation for women, especially Black women, in these in-demand career fields. However, I have long felt that the solution to this lies within redefining education for Black students through access to identity affirming informal learning environments; so they understand the full scope of their aptitudes, and also the full scope of what careers are possible.” said Cynthia Chapple, Founder and CEO of Black Girls Do STEM. “Working with YouScience has confirmed that notion by truly showcasing the possibilities for our students based on their unique, individual aptitudes.”
While both Black male and female students have aptitude for STEM careers, the report found that significant exposure gaps exist for female students in particular:
88% more Black female students have an aptitude for careers in Advanced Manufacturing than interest
73% more Black female students have more aptitude for careers in Computers & Technology than interest
72% more Black female students have an aptitude for careers in Architecture & Construction than interest
“For decades, Black students have encountered inequities that have impacted their pathways in education and then career. It’s imperative to recognize that Black students possess the aptitude for all STEM careers, but the glaring exposure gap remains a formidable challenge due to resource deficiencies and lack of representation.
By bridging the exposure gaps and doing so earlier in education, society can help Black students understand all of the opportunities available to them and connect them with education and career pathways and programs that can foster even more skills and understanding,” said Edson Barton, Founder and CEO of YouScience. “One of the most notable programs helping to bridge the gap for students is Black Girls Do STEM. This organization and Cynthia Chapple are working diligently to provide female students with the opportunity to learn, create and build confidence in their abilities to pursue STEM careers.”

Students and STEM Report as well as recommendations from YouScience and Black Girls Do STEM on how to address the career exposure gaps in STEM, visit resources. yousciencce.com.
YouScience and Black Girls Do STEM are collaborating to solve the career exposure gap for Black students. The collaboration will begin with the donation of 160 YouScience Aptitude and Career Discovery tool licenses to Black Girls Do STEM to cover the 2024-25 academic year. This will enable Black Girls Do STEM to assist their students in personalized educational and career exploration based on each student’s aptitudes.
YouScience® is the leading technology provider dedicated to solving the skills gap crisis for students and employers. Its end-to-end platform, YouScience® Brightpath, connects education with career applications designed to help students unlock their potential for future pathways. Black Girls Do STEM envisions a “new normal” where there is equitable representation of Black women across all STEM fields. The goal is to create a cradle-career pathway to strengthen and diversify the pipeline of skilled workers entering today’s dynamic labor market. BGDSTEM specifically targets Black girls who have been traditionally underrepresented in STEM fields. BGDSTEM works to advance 21st century skills necessary to complete rigorous academic programs and obtain family-wage employment. By creating a culturally affirming learning space, BGDSTEM gives room for cognitive and mental resilience. BGDSTEM programs provide a seven-year continuous pathway for Black girls beginning in 6th-12th grade and through university and workforce entry.

5 Women Leaders Share Their Best Advice With The Next Generation
(StatePoint) Setting and reaching goals is never easy, and if you’re a woman, you will likely face additional challenges on the path to achieving your dreams.
To foster the success of future female leaders, five Wells Fargo honorees of American Banker’s “Most Powerful Women in Banking” are sharing their best advice with the next generation of female leaders:
1. Stick it out. Tracy Kerrins is Wells Fargo’s head of technology, a position equivalent to chief information officer. One of the only women at a large American bank with this role, Kerrins knows that roadblocks are a part of the journey that you should anticipate and plan for.
“Stick to your goals, even when obstacles emerge, and rely on those who are truly invested in your success,” she says.
This focus on preparedness keeps Kerrins on her toes in a rapidly evolving technological landscape. Recently, she and her team implemented a number of personalization technology solutions that are improving the banking experience, including beefing up fraud detection and delivering a virtual assistant to customers.
2. Stay curious. Transforming the banking industry is fundamental to Kristy Fercho’s role at Wells Fargo as head of diverse segments, representation, and inclusion. Her motto amounts to “The 3 B’s,” which include, “Be excellent at your job. Be curious. And most importantly: Be your authentic self.” This attitude is valued at a time when Wells Fargo continues to commit to its diversity, equity and inclusion programs both inside the company and in communities where they operate.
3. Uplift others. For Ellen Patterson, general counsel for Wells
(StatePoint) Perhaps even more nerve-wracking than waiting for your child’s college acceptance letters is learning whether they’ve been awarded financial aid. Recent changes to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) designed to simplify the process have led to unforeseen hiccups and technical glitches, causing academic institutions to delay sending out financial aid award letters. However, once you finally get the results, it can give your family a better idea of what to do next.
“Our research shows that for a majority of parents, figuring out how to pay for college was the ‘road to college’ activity that caused them the most stress. By making a finan-

Fargo, her own success is a reflection of the diligence and hard work of the team of over 1,200 attorneys and legal professionals she leads. She views every experience as an opportunity to learn from others and to teach others, regardless of seniority, and she values coming together as a team to put forth the strongest work product. That’s why she advises: “Be great at what you’re doing, and actively look for ways to be helpful to those around you. That applies in the early days and later on as well.”
4. Solve problems. Given her educational background, it’s no surprise that Tanya Sanders, head of Wells Fargo’s auto division, has confidence that solutions to most problems are just waiting to be discovered. Not only is she a banker looking to simplify the process for consumers to obtain auto loans and vehicles, she’s also a mechanical engineer who believes, “There is incredible power in forging new and inclusive solutions.” She advises future leaders to “Find ways to collaborate with professional and community colleagues to develop solutions that expand economic and social benefits for everyone.”
5. Communicate effectively. Kara McShane, head of Wells Fargo’s commercial real estate division, believes strong communications are a critical component of business acumen. Her advice is to, “Learn how to communicate clearly, concisely and confidently in order to be effective. Be direct but diplomatic. How you say it is as important as what you say.”
Whether you’re in school, recently graduated or in the middle of your career, applying the tried-and-true lessons of successful women leaders can help you meet challenges head on and make a bigger impact.
What Families With College-Bound Students Need to Know This Spring
cial plan and prioritizing it, you can be well prepared to avoid the most common bumps in the road,” explains Angela Colatriano, chief marketing officer, College Ave. Colatriano recommends using the spring to teach your child these valuable financial skills: how to set up a budget, how to pay bills and how to manage credit. If your family will potentially be borrowing to finance college, students should also gain an understanding of how loans work, and how the different terms of the loan will affect their monthly payments and overall loan cost.
Speaking of budget, you should set
Ave survey found that in addition to helping pay for tuition and housing costs, parents also contribute to their child’s phone bill (65%), health insurance (61%), food and groceries (42%), cable and internet bill (35%) and transportation (32%). Be realistic about which expenses you can afford and where you want to ask your child to chip in.
Decode Award Letters
Financial aid award letters can look different for each school. Familiarize yourself with their components so that when they arrive, you’ll be ready to decipher them. Here’s what to look for:
1. Free money: The award letter will list whether your student is eligible for scholarships and grants (sometimes called Merit or Gift Aid). This is money you typically don’t need to pay back.
2. Federal Work-Study: Your child might be eligible for Federal Work-Study jobs. While jobs aren’t guaranteed, they can be a good opportunity to help cover educational expenses.
3. Student Loans: Schools will list any federal loans your child is eligible to receive. Helpful hint: They may be grouped with scholarships and grants. You should also note whether the loan is subsidized or unsubsidized. Because unsubsidized loans accrue interest while your student is enrolled and during deferment periods, this will affect the overall loan cost.
4. Other factors: Check if awards being offered are for all four years and understand what your child will need to do to continue being eligible for them, year-to-year.
To get an apples-to-apples look atthe offers, calculate the net direct cost of each
school by subtracting offered scholarships and grants from the cost of attendance (tuition, room, board, textbooks and fees). If applicable, you can subtract work-study aid too. You should also factor in expected increases in tuition, room, board and other fees.
Fill in the Gaps
If after doing the math, you find you have a financial gap to cover, look into private scholar
ships. One easy one to enter on a monthly basis is College Ave’s $1,000 Scholarship Monthly Sweepstakes.
You may also want to consider a private student loan or parent loan. Look for a lender with great rates, flexible repayment terms, and the opportunity to customize the loan to fit your budget. For example, College Ave offers student loan calculators, a pre-qualification tool that offers quick answers without affecting your credit score, and other helpful tools and resources. To learn more, visit CollegeAve.com.
“The important thing is not to panic. If you filled out the FAFSA, financial aid award letters are on the way. And once you receive them, you and your student can get to the fun part of the
planning for the future,” says Colatriano.
