Legislation Banning Junk Fees Passes out of the House

BILL NOW HEADS TO THE SENATE TO END DECEPTIVE JUNK FEES IN ILLINOIS

Springfield, IL – In a continued effort to push for stronger consumer protections and increased transparency around pricing, State Representative Bob Morgan (D-Deerfield) successfully passed HB 4629, out of the House. This bill was designed to eliminate so-called “junk fees” or hidden charges often found at the end of receipts or last point of sale. The bill marks a major step towards promoting transparent pricing and fair competition in the state.

State Representative Bob Morgan (D-Deerfield) emphasized the benefits for Illinois consumers: “This legislation will help every single consumer in Illinois. When this bill passes the Senate and becomes law, we will be ensuring consumers that the price they see is the price they pay, with no hidden fees, and no surprise charges at checkout. This is a win for consumers and a win for fair business competition.”

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau reports that junk fees cost nearly $3,200 annually for an average family of four. This substantial impact on household budgets highlights the urgency of protecting consumers. HB 4629 will empower the Illinois Attorney General to crack down on junk fees using enforcement powers found in the Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Practices Act. The new law would help level the playing field for honest businesses that have been transparent with their customers.

Junk Fee Ban initiatives have gained nationwide support, with more people becoming acutely aware that an extra dollar here and a dollar there are adding up. According to a survey by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, over 85% of Americans support measures to ban junk fees to ensure transparent pricing across all industries. This strong public backing reflects the widespread frustration with deceptive fees that can obscure the true cost of goods and services.

As the focus now shifts to the Illinois Senate, the bill’s passage would signal a significant advancement in consumer protections and positions Illinois as a national leader in setting standards for pricing transparency and fair business practices.

‘Mamma Mia!’ Actress revels in 25th Anniversary of Musical

She decided to major in musical theatre in college. Her first professional gig was performing in “Ain’t Misbehavin’” at the Great Caruso Theatre in Houston, while she was still in college.

Ever since then, it has been a growing love and passion of Steele’s that she has been fortunate enough to do again and again. Steele is playing Tanya in “Mamma Mia!” Steele describes her character as the “tell-it-likeit-is” friend.

“Mamma Mia!” tells the story of Sophie and her mother Donna who live on a Greek Island. Sophie is set to marry Sky and decides to invite three men who could be her father to her wedding. Tanya is Donna’s friend and former Dynamo bandmate.

premiered in the West End in London in 1999. It features the music of Swedish pop group ABBA. It went to Broadway in 2001.

Steele said her favorite song from the musical is “Knowing Me, Knowing You, which is performed by Sam, one of the potential fathers. She said it is a good vibe, and a slight earworm so it gets caught in her head. In the Broadway Chicago production, Sam is played by Victor Wallace. Steele hopes the audience enjoys the performance.

Tanya is Donna’s friend and former Dynamo bandmate.

“She’s been married three times, so she’s been around the block a time or two, but she’s also a very classy individual as well,” Steele said about her character.

To prepare for the role, Steele got in the mood of friendship, because that is Tanya’s ultimate goal, to show her steadfast friendship and love for Donna. Tanya is there for Donna during her time of need as they go through this adventure.

Steele played the role before in 2017 at Beef and Board Dinner Theatre in Indianapolis. When they held auditions for the National Tour, Steele decided to audition. This is the 25th Anniversary of Mamma Mia!. It

“I hope they take-away what the story has been about, it’s a story of female empowerment, it’s a story of love, it’s a story of friendship, it’s multigenerational,” she said. Steele added that mothers and daughters come to the show together and each person finds a character on the stage who they relate to and reflects how they fit into their life.

Steele said that while people know the music of ABBA to be very poppy and upbeat, Act 2 has a lot of emotional music, and it is meant to pull at the heartstrings. She said there is a good mix of laughter and sadness, and she hopes the audience takes away all of those elements.

“It’s a wonderful diverse cast, it’s a beautiful story told and it’s a Mamma Mia like you’ve never seen before,” Steele said.

Mamma Mia! is at the JamesM. Nederlander Theatre, located at 24 W. Randolph, until May 19th. To purchase tickets, visit www.broadwayinchicago.com.

Assessor Hosts 2024 Market Investor Day

Cook County — The Cook County Assessor’s Office (CCAO) hosted its annual Market Investor Day on Wednesday, April 24. The event featured conversations between CCAO executive staff, industry leaders, and attendees about how property values are modeled and the state of commercial real estate in Chicago.

During his opening remarks, Cook County Assessor Fritz Kaegi discussed the popular “urban doom loop” theory. This theory holds that declines in office building values within large cities will lead to declining property tax revenues. But Cook County is positioned to avoid it.

“In Cook County, our taxing districts determine in advance how much is going to be collected. Assessments determine the share of this pie, but they don’t change the size of this pie,” he said. “Eight billion dollars is collected in Chicago in property taxes, and that will be collected this year regardless of where assessments go.”

Any decline in office values may not affect the overall tax base as much as widely believed. “Many downtown office buildings are in Tax Increment Financing (TIF) districts. The growth in value over the last couple of decades goes to the TIF districts, and not to Chicago’s tax base,” Assessor Kaegi said. “Those same TIFs will take the first hit after any downshift in value. In other words, TIFs are going to act like shock absorbers to the tax base.”

A panel of leaders from the CCAO Valuations Department discussed the different approaches

and practices used to value commercial properties and provided an overview of market conditions for office buildings, hotels, data centers, and other categories of commercial real estate.

They also highlighted measures by the CCAO to promote transparency, including the commercial methodology worksheets published for each township and the practice of anonymizing appeals.

Panelists included Chief Valuations Officer Michael Piper, Director of Special Properties Mildred Terzic, Director of Commercial Valuations T.J. Schemmel, Director of Residential Valuations Ray Gottner, Director of Special Projects Brian Sibila, and Director of Commercial Outreach Erik Harmon. Chief Data Officer Nicole Jardine and Director of Multifamily Development John McDonnell gave short presentations detailing the office’s public data sources and affordable housing programs.

The event finished with a panel of industry leaders in affordable housing, real estate, and business moderated by Collete English Dixon, Executive Director of the Roosevelt University School of Real Estate. The discussion touched on the prospects for commercial real estate in Cook County, as well as how to solve problems of development and affordability in Chicago.

“You look at so many parts of the city – particularly on the South and West sides – and they’re crying out for investment,” said Craig Huffman, co-founder and CEO of Metro Edge. “We have to

Gov. Pritzker Highlights Proposal to Eliminate $1 Billion in Medical Debt

Second Annual Event Brings Together Students and Staff Across the District

CHICAGO -- Governor JB Pritzker joined Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle, the Department of Healthcare and Family Services, and advocates to highlight the State’s proposed $10 million investment to eliminate up to $1 billion in medical debt for 340,000 low-income Illinoisans. In partnership with Cook County, which already implemented a similar program for county residents, the event aimed to garner support for legislation that will fund a debt relief program statewide.

“The Mental Health Summit highlights the District’s commitment to the mental, social, and emotional well-being of our students and staff,” said CPS CEO Pedro Martinez. “Mental health support and services are a critical part of the continuum of health resources the District provides to help eliminate barriers to learning.”

In October 2023, the District won a $415,000 grant from the State to improve post-pandemic student mental health care. The District is using part of that funding to col-

“In Cook County, our Medical Debt Relief Initiative (MDRI) has already assisted over 200,000 residents and eliminated nearly $350 million in debt. The stories of relief and gratitude we’ve received from participants underscore the impact the program is having on the lives of our residents,” said Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle. “We commend Governor JB Pritzker and the State of Illinois for launching their own program aimed at medical debt relief. Medical debt is a leading cause of bankruptcy and government has an obligation to tackle the financial barriers that affect our citizens’ health and well-being. Medical debt relief is a crucial step, and it is part of a broader, equitable strategy to enhance the financial stability and support the holistic well-being of Illinois residents.”

“Mental health is a top priority of the District,” said Dr. Adawy Akintunde. “The Mental Health Summit brings together our students and school practitioners, such as psychologists, counselors, and social workers, to strategize methods to improve mental healthcare in our District.”

The Mental Health Summit, organized by the District’s Office of Student Health and Wellness, aims to provide healing-centered and trauma-informed ways of supporting students and breaking the stigma around mental health, especially as the District continues to support students as they emerge from the pandemic and other trauma.

“Medical debt can be a crippling burden for families, and this proposed investment will alleviate a major financial strain so that people can focus on what’s most important: keeping themselves and their families healthy,” HFS Director Elizabeth Whitehorn said. “The proposed medical debt buyback program strongly aligns with the Department’s mission, and will complement our ongoing work to eliminate barriers that prevent people from accessing high-quality health care.”

“While we need to take child abuse and mistreatment seriously, we must also remember that kids will be kids and accidents happen,” said Lightford (D-Maywood). “Cases of abuse and mistreatment must be thoroughly, accurately and transparently investigated before making a decision to remove a child from their home.”

Families across the state have faced wrongful allegations of child abuse or neglect due to medical conditions, birth injuries and normal childhood accidents that result in findings that are misinterpreted as signs of abuse.

Lightford’s measure would set forth a number of protections that must be provided to a parent or guardian at the center of an abuse or neglect investigation. Under the measure, the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services would be required to notify the parent or guardian of an investigation and give them the opportunity to submit a second medical opinion to be considered in the investigation.

Further, if a medical professional examines a child for the purpose of providing an opinion to DCFS regarding whether the child’s injury or condition is suspicious for child maltreatment, they must identify that intent to the parent or guardian and alert them that they may be required to communicate with law enforcement and provide court testimony.

CPS has invested in additional staff, including counselors and social workers, to support students’ mental health and well-being. The District has increased the percentage of social workers by more than 60 percent over the last six years and last year, the District won a $15 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education, which will in part be used to boost school social worker recruitment, hiring and retention.

“We’re thrilled to see state and county governments coming together to support the unburdening of residents with un-payable medical debts,” said Undue Medical Debt CEO and President Allison Sesso. “Governor Pritzker and President Preckwinkle exemplify passionate, practical leaders who understand the importance of both helping people here and now with medical debt relief while also continuing to explore upstream, policy solutions to the medical debt crisis.”

Of the 142,000 investigations of possible abuse or neglect investigated by DCFS, 98,000 were not substantiated.

“As a parent whose child is in the hospital for medical treatment, you have the right to know when the doctor’s role shifts from caring for your child and providing you with information to the dual capacity role of examining and diagnosing your child and sharing information with a government agency that could potentially take your child away,” said Lightford. “At the forefront, the measure is about transparency and humanity.” Senate Bill 378 passed the Senate Thursday and heads to the House for further consideration.

In his FY25 Budget Address, Governor Pritzker introduced a four-year plan to eliminate an estimated $4 billion in medical debt for over one million Illinoisans. The proposal includes a partnership with Undue Medical Debt (formerly known as RIP Medical Debt), a national nonprofit focused on abolishing financially burdensome medical debt and promoting systemic change for patients across the country. By working with Undue Medical Debt, the State will pay one penny (on average) to buy back and eliminate every one dollar of medical debt.

As of March 2024, CPS became one of the first districts in the nation to stock all 634 schools, including options, charters, and contract schools with Narcan, an opioid antagonist. As of April 1, the District has trained 66 percent of staff in overdose prevention and Narcan administration in collaboration with Rush University Medical Center through the Safe Schools platform.

In Illinois, 14% of the population has medical debt in collections. However, communities of color are disproportionately impacted, with nearly 20% of the Illinois population in communities of color having accumulated medical debt in collections. Those struggling with the weight of medical debt face unique challenges, including an increased risk of bankruptcy, difficulties affording basic needs, and even pressure to forgo needed medical care.

SPRINGFIELD — To protect buyers, lenders and homeowners, State Senator Robert Marwick has advanced legislation that would lay out regulations for online foreclosure sales.

“Losing a home through foreclosure proceedings is one of the most difficult experiences a person can face,” said Martwick (D-Chicago). “This legislation both permits and sets regulations for online foreclosure sales, which can ensure the best possible outcomes for people facing this difficult financial stress.”

The measure would allow online foreclosure sales to be conducted online, in-person or both, and would require the method be included in the notice of sale. Further, the measure includes requirements for a proper online sale including allowable fees, registration and identification requirements, and the bidding procedure.

Historically, judicial foreclosure sales take place at the local courthouse, but over the past few years, there has been a rise in online sales and unregulated third-party entities offering this service. This lack of regulation can result in bad actors manipulating the auction process and can endanger user’s data security.

Community Investment Corporation, Gordon Segal, co-founder and former Chairman and CEO of Crate & Barrel, and Mike Glasser, President of the Neighborhood Building Owners Alliance.

In July 2022, the Cook County board approved President Toni Preckwinkle’s proposal to begin partnering with Undue Medical Debt and provide relief to residents. By utilizing a portion of the county’s American Rescue Plan Act Funds, Cook County has abolished nearly $350 million in medical debt to date, benefitting more than 200,000 people. Undue Medical Debt collaborates with providers like hospitals and physicians’ groups to acquire qualifying medical debts for abolishment.

Online sales can offer a number of benefits over in-person courthouse sales. These sales provide flexibility and transparency, allowing interested buyers to bid on their own schedule and in a more accessible way for those unable to travel to the courthouse. It also provides information to potential bidders beyond what can be provided in a newspaper advertisement, allowing bidders to conduct due diligence on the property.

“Online foreclosure sales will increase the number of bidders, which will provide a higher sale price for the property and reduce the possibility of debt remaining for the homeowner,” Martwick said.

Senate Bill 2919 passed the Senate Wednesday. It now goes to the House for further consideration.

UrbanGeekz Inks Groundbreaking Content Syndication Deal with Black-Owned Ridesharing App Moovn

ATLANTA, PRNewswire -- Award-winning digital news brand UrbanGeekz has teamed up with Black-owned ride-hailing app Moovn to share its content with passengers on the move.

The wide-reaching syndication deal gives riders across the globe direct access to UrbanGeekz content right in the comfort of Moovn ridesharing cars. Embedded in the interface design, the Moovn mobile app empowers passengers to read, watch, and engage with UrbanGeekz during trips.

“I’ve always been someone who thinks outside the box,” said UrbanGeekz founder and CEO Kunbi Tinuoye. “For years, I’ve had this huge vision to showcase our content to a captive audience of passengers sitting in the back seat of rideshares. We just needed to find alignment with the right partner, and that’s why we are so excited to collaborate with Moovn.”

The Partnership Is History in The Making

The first-of-its-kind deal is way ahead of the curve. This is the first time a Black-owned news platform has inked a content partnership pact on a ridesharing mobile application. Moovn now offers a unique opportunity for its passengers that the big players haven’t adequately explored.

“I’m very excited by this fantastic partnership between Moovn and UrbanGeekz,” said Moovn founder and CEO Godwin Gabriel, who holds an MBA from the Foster School of Business. “We believe this deal will add enormous value for our riders and Moovn users who can now gain direct access to UrbanGeekz content on-ride, or even not on-ride through our subscription and email marketing campaigns.”

The agreement will extend the reach of UrbanGeekz’s breaking news, feature stories, expert columns, analytical articles, product reviews, and original video content to riders around the world. “It will expand UrbanGeekz’s global footprint to our international audience and subscriber base,” added Gabriel.” It’s something that’s never been done before, and it just shows the respective growth of our brands. We (Moovn) have plans for even more growth as we continue to attract more investment dollars.”

in Western and emerging markets. Founded by Seattle-based, Tanzanian-born Godwin Gabriel, the ridesharing app operates in NYC, New York; Seattle, Washington; Los Angeles, California; and Vancouver, Canada. In Africa, Moovn operates in Nairobi, Kenya; Arusha, Tanzania; Lusha; Zambia; and four cities in Tanzania: Arusha, Dodoma, Mwanza, and Gabriel’s home city, Dar-es-salaam.

Moovn has a full-time team in its Seattle headquarters, with employees working out of its Nairobi regional office to support Sub-Saharan operations.

“Our Africa strategy has paid off very well, and we have increased our market exposure on the continent. We are now positioning ourselves to become the third ridesharing option in the United States. Part of our expansion strategy includes entering at least nine U.S. cities by the end of the year. We are currently piloting our services in Washington, D.C.; Atlanta, Georgia; Boston, Massachusetts; and San Francisco, California.”

Collaboration Aligns With UrbanGeekz’s Longterm Mission

As UrbanGeekz solidifies its standing as a trusted source of information and inspiration for diverse audiences, this pioneering deal aligns with its vision to broaden its audience across major cities in the States and Africa.

“UrbanGeekz’s passion has always been to create premium business, technology, and innovation content from a diverse and multicultural perspective,” said Cambridge University alum Tinuoye. “Our goal is to educate, inspire, and entertain our users. So, for our content to now reach an even wider audience that’s not just in the West but across major hubs in Africa is something that makes me extremely proud.”

Moovn’s Driver-Centric Model Focuses On Fair Treatment Of Drivers

Ridesharing technology has boomed into a multi-billion-dollar industry over the past decade, with the dominant players being Uber and Lyft. However, Moovn offers several unique features that differentiate its offerings. Gabriel describes his company as a driver-centric business that offers one of the most attractive revenue-sharing splits for drivers in the industry. With this model, he adds, drivers can make more money, and the profit distribution is fairer. By prioritizing the well-being of drivers, Moovn offers a business model centered on a more equitable profit distribution.

“Moovn was founded on the principle of fairness and transforming lives within the communities we operate in,” said Gabriel. “We are driver-centric, and this is something ingrained in our mission, to put the driver first because we believe if they are treated fairly and compensated well, they will go the extra mile for our customers. The team cares deeply about passengers as well. Moovn has no ‘surge pricing,’ and riders can schedule trips well in advance, even up to a month.”

The app allows users to book rides instantly or ahead of time, selecting the type of vehicle they want. In addition to cars, Moovn offers options for tuk-tuks, three-wheeled taxis, and motorcycles in Africa. Another arm of the business is Moovn Rush, which allows users to request drivers to transport packages.

This pioneering partnership between UrbanGeekz and Moovn will support both brands as they continue disrupting their respective industries.

For Exquisite Finds, the NYC Spring Jewelry and Object Show Unearthed Hidden Gems from Around the World

New York, NY -- In a world where innovation and modernity often take center stage, there’s a timeless allure to the vintage and antique. Stepping into a show dedicated to these treasures is entering a realm where every piece has a story to tell, and every glance reveals a glimpse into history’s elegant past. Cue the NYC Spring Jewelry and Object Show (NYCJAOS). After a successful inaugural autumn edition, the new KIL Promotions spring show recently launched at the Metropolitan Pavilion.

Konstantinos I. Leoussis, show founder, renowned antique and vintage dealer, and bench jeweler, says, “I founded the show with a vision to reignite the passion for vintage and antique jewelry while fostering a welcoming environment for both budding collectors and seasoned enthusiasts.” Leoussis continues, “In today’s jewelry market, smaller businesses often face challenges, and many are adopting direct-to-consumer models. However, I wanted to create a space where individuals could experience the magic of vintage pieces firsthand, without intimidation. Our show is designed to be inclusive and inviting, encouraging attendees to explore, learn, and indulge in the rich history and exquisite craftsmanship of timeless treasures.”

were bridal related—to find an unusual wedding band, a pair of earrings to go with the wedding gown—which I found particularly interesting to encounter at a show. To me, it means the end consumer is more educated and has a strong desire to see all that they can before deciding on their purchases, which might be a little overwhelming, but ultimately why a show like this is so important.”

KIL Promotions’ inaugural autumn show hosted 31 exhibitors, while the recent spring edition had a bustling showcase featuring 71 exhibitors, more than doubling in size. The exponential growth in vendor participation underscores the interest in the show and its growing appeal among vintage, antique, and contemporary watch, and jewelry enthusiasts. “KIL Promotions put on an amazing show and went out of their way to bring in dealers from the West Coast and abroad, so I think it was an extraordinary opportunity for New York show goers to experience a really diverse curation of jewelry and objects,” says Alison Barry, Owner of Duvenay. “The attendees seemed less interested in trends, and more into special antiques, historical pieces, and treasure hunting one-of-a-kind finds.”

David Alvarez, General Partner of Jacob’s Diamond and Estate Jewelry, reported his team was impressed by the large crowds of mainly younger women in their 20s-30s— sophisticated shoppers, genuinely interested in antique jewels. With a focus on cultivating the next generation of collectors, KIL Promotions welcomed a diverse crowd, encouraging a range of pricing, appealing to first-time show goers and jewelry connoisseurs alike.

Renowned jewelry author, journalist collector and dealer, Beth Bernstein says, “Some visitors who were purchasing for themselves came with very specific pieces in mind, and many

Over the weekend, high energy and spirits filled the room, buzzing with over 4,800 visitors who viewed and shopped exquisite pieces, amongst fellow jewelry lovers and collectors. Contemporary designers included: KIL N.Y.C., Heavenly Vices, Erica Molinari, Circa 1700, Alex Streeter, Lily Streeter, GiGi Ferranti, Anne Baker, and K8 Jewelry. The world-leading antique, vintage, watch, and estate dealers at the show included Jewels by Grace, Duvenay, Alpha & Omega, Keyamour, Thea Grant, Spare Room Antiques, Jogani, Ishy Antiques, Lowther Antiques, Steve Fishman, Woodcliff on the Hudson, Jacob’s Diamond & Estate Jewelry, Jack Weirs & Sons, Courtville Antiques, Be Jeweled and more.

Before the show opened to the public, a VIP Early Viewing Party was held, where KIL Promotions successfully raised $3,200 in scholarship funds, to support local jewelry designers in their studies. Uplifting emerging talent, the company is dedicated to supporting talent entering the industry.

This summer, the new Tokyo Jewelry and Object Show will debut in Japan, also hosted by KIL Promotions. With customer service as a focal point of their shows, the company is committed to delivering an outstanding experience for both vendors and visitors. Ismael Khan of Ishy Antiques says, “We had an amazing time at the NYC spring show. We were so happy to see so many of our favorite dealers exhibiting alongside us and the amount of footfall was incredible. The way we are looked after is second to none, and we can’t wait for the next show!”

Choosing Love Over Fear: Embracing Foster Care as a Cool and Compassionate Choice

As we enter National Foster Care Awareness Month, it’s essential to shed light on the transformative power of fostering and adoption. While many of us are familiar with the concept of foster care, there’s often a lingering stigma or misconception surrounding it. Some may view foster care as a last resort or a daunting responsibility, overshadowed by fear and uncertainty. However, I’m here to challenge that narrative and urge us all to choose love over fear when it comes to fostering a child.

Fostering a child is not just an act of kindness; it’s a profound opportunity to make a lasting impact on a young life. It’s about providing stability, support, and unconditional love to children who need it most. And contrary to popular belief, foster care isn’t just for a select few with special qualifications or resources—it’s for anyone willing to open their hearts and homes.

One of the most significant barriers to fostering a child is fear—fear of the unknown, fear of attachment, fear of not being enough. But what if we reframed that fear into an opportunity for growth and connection? What if we viewed fostering as an act of courage rather than a burden? By choosing love over fear, we can break down these barriers and create a more compassionate world for children in need.

Moreover, let’s make foster care cool. Let’s celebrate the rappers, actors, athletes, and celebrities

who have spent time in foster care and gone on to achieve greatness. From Tiffany Haddish to Ice T, Pepa to Greg Louganis, Seal to Cher, Colin Kaepernick to Steve Jobs, Eddie Murphy, and many more, these individuals have defied the odds and thrived despite their challenging beginnings.

Their stories remind us that foster care isn’t a sentence—it’s a chapter in a much larger story. It’s a testament to resilience, strength, and the power of love to overcome adversity. And if they can turn their experiences into sources of inspiration and motivation, so can we.

So, let’s challenge ourselves to step out of our comfort zones and embrace foster care as a cool and compassionate choice. Let’s educate ourselves, dispel myths, and support families who choose to foster. Together, we can create a world where every child has a loving and stable home—a world where love triumphs over fear.

This National Foster Care Awareness Month, let’s choose love. Let’s choose compassion. Let’s choose foster care.

Thank you for your commitment to creating a brighter future for children in foster care.

PROPEL and Southern Company Announce Launch of Inaugural HBCU-Focused Cybersecurity Consortium

ATLANTA, PRNewswire -- PROPEL, a first-of-its-kind innovation hub for two-year and four-year Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), announces the launch of a pioneering cybersecurity consortium. The PROPEL HBCU Cybersecurity Consortium (HCC), created in partnership with Southern Company, was founded on the principles of collaboration, leadership, innovation and foresight.

This Consortium not only unites academia, industry and government but more importantly serves as a nucleus for HBCUs to complement their curriculums to be more industry skill aligned and agile to the ever-evolving cybersecurity landscape.

“PROPEL’s consortium will set a benchmark for developing a future workforce that is well equipped to address and solve the cybersecurity needs of today and tomorrow,” said chairman, president and CEO of Southern Company Chris Womack. “Leveraging the insights, tools, resources and access to real-world opportunities that industry and government entities can bring to the table now will help further develop and enrich the transformative skills our future workforce must have. These skills are essential in how we continue to protect our critical infrastructure and be better prepared to face the cyber challenges ahead.”

The HCC is comprised of four pivotal elements: resource hub, professional development, accelerated learning and workforce pipeline. It is designed to facilitate connection between industry, students and faculty with the latest trends, emerging technologies, training and a collaborative space that fosters the development of new courses and opportunities. PROPEL is proud to launch HCC’s first two programs both aimed at elevating HBCU faculty and student expertise and skills in cybersecurity.

Currently, 32 HBCUs with cybersecurity curriculum and degree offerings comprise the first consortium institutions. In-Demand Careers Every New College Grad Should Know About

(StatePoint) So you’ve recently graduated college. The summer ahead is the perfect time to consider a career as a financial planner. At a time when new research reveals that more than half of four-year college graduates are underemployed a year after they graduate, the financial planning industry is booming.

To give yourself a competitive edge when you’re just starting out, consider earning your CFP® certification. CFP® certification is the standard in financial planning and paves the way for an exceptional career.

Here’s what you need to know about a career as a financial advisor with CFP® certification, also known as a CFP® professional:

• You can gain financial stability: When you’re young, it’s important to pay down any student debt and begin saving for the future as early as possible. That’s difficult to do in industries with low starting wages. While financial planning salaries vary, you can expect to earn $50-70K as a starting point. And there’s a lot of room for growth — experienced financial advisors earn $192,000 on average.

• You’ll enjoy job security: Many industries are experiencing widespread layoffs and instability, but financial planning is a career path offering job security and growth. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the demand for financial advisors will grow quickly, at a rate of 13% through 2032.

• You’ll use a wide range of skills: Financial planning isn’t just numbers and math. The job requires great communication skills and a high level of emotional intelligence to guide clients through the psychology behind their money management.

• You can forge your own path: Financial advising is not a one-size-fits-all career path. You can choose to specialize in a particular area of finance or take a holistic approach to your

(StatePoint) Taking the SAT or ACT exam is the culmination of months of test-specific preparation, and in truth, years of schooling. While knowing that can feel like a lot of pressure, there are steps you can take the night before the exam to calm your nerves and enter the testing site with confidence: 1. Pack your essentials: Going to bed knowing you’ve packed everything you need to succeed during the test will help you sleep soundly and make the morning less frenzied. Your packing list should include an official, currently valid photo identification, your admission ticket to the test, No. 2 pencils (be sure they have erasers), a snack and water bottle (staying fueled is essential), a sweater (testing sites are often chilly and being uncomfortable can throw you off your game), and of course, a calculator. The best exam day calculator is one that’s easy to use and has an intuitive icon menu, such as the fx-9750GIII graphing calculator. While you won’t need all of its 2,900 functions during your test, or its programming capabilities, this Casio calculator is a great companion for high school juniors and seniors as it can support high-level STEM learning in the classroom, as well as go into exam mode for use during the PSAT, SAT, ACT, and other major standardized exams, like AP and SAT subject tests. To familiarize yourself with the calculator and its interface, be sure to use the same calculator for test prep as well.

clients’ needs. Where you work is also up to you — you might work at a nationally known financial services firm, a small local firm or even a bank or credit union. Because of the commitment to professional excellence and high ethical standards it demonstrates, gaining your CFP® certification will unlock even more career opportunities. Many CFP® professionals even start their own business early in their careers.

• You’ll be helping others: CFP® professionals build trusted relationships with their clients, helping people achieve their life goals, whether that’s buying a home, paying for their children’s college educations or preparing for retirement.

• You can design your own schedule: After four years of scheduling classes to suit your needs, the idea of rigid working hours may not be appealing. Fortunately, financial advising can come with scheduling flexibility and a good worklife balance.

• You’ll find support along the way: As you work toward CFP® certification, you’ll have many opportunities for ongoing support. An online candidate forum offers opportunities to connect with others on their path to certification. Other resources include a progress tracker, exam preparation tools, financial aid and three mentorship cycles a year that align with the exams offered. Additionally, the CFP Board’s Career Center can help you find your footing after you get certified. For more information about becoming a financial planner, visit CFP.net.

As you spend the summer months looking back on and celebrating all your hard work over the last four years, don’t forget to make an investment in your future. Pursuing CFP® certification can lead to a rewarding, profitable career as a financial planner.

2. Eat right: Proper nutrition and cognition go hand-in-hand. The night before your exam, fuel yourself with brain foods containing a mix of antioxidants, protein and Omega-3s. Fresh fruits and vegetables, fish, nuts, beans, whole grains, tofu and lean meats are all great choices. Try to avoid food unfamiliar to you, as you don’t know how it will settle and it could cause a stomachache. You should also forgo overly sugary or processed treats, which can lead to an energy crash. Being thirsty during your test is not only distracting, dehydration can actually impair cognition and brain health. Be sure to drink plenty of water the night before your test to keep the mental juices flowing.

3. Sleep tight: It can be difficult to settle in for a night of sound sleep before an important event. Reduce the chances of tossing and turning by putting down your devices at least an hour before bed, as blue light can suppress melatonin secretion and impact sleep. Instead, read, journal or do another quiet, enjoyable activity. On that note, avoid a last-minute study session or practice exam. The night before the test is not the time to cram. It’s a time to relax so your mind is fresh when it counts. If you do have trouble falling asleep, don’t panic. Resting quietly with your eyes closed can be beneficial too, and may help you doze off eventually. By checking a few pre-test tasks off your to-do list the night before, you can be fueled, rested and geared up for your college entrance exams.
