NEWS briefly EDUCATION COVID-19 VACCINE TO BE TESTED IN UIC CLINICAL TRIAL The University of Illinois at Chicago will soon test a vaccine for COVID-19. Expected to launch July 9, the trial — a phase 3 clinical study— will test the efficacy of a vaccine developed by biotech company Moderna. “We want to see if the vaccine will prevent people from getting COVID-19 or if it will prevent people from experiencing severe illness if they do get the disease,” said Dr. Richard Novak, lead investigator of the clinical trial at UIC. UIC is expected to be the only site in Chicago selected to launch the Moderna phase 3 trial, which is being administered by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease. “UIC has a history of engaging diverse communities in our research programs and I believe our ability to reach the communities that have been hardest hit by the pandemic is one of the reasons that we were selected for this clinical trial,” Novak said. “We want to test this vaccine in people who are most at risk of experiencing complications and death due to the virus.” The UIC vaccine trial will be accessible through a number of clinical locations in the University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System, or UI Health, including sites in Pilsen, Little Village and Hyde Park. Anyone interested in volunteering to participate in the vaccine trial should contact UIC researchers at 312-413-5897 or email ProjectWishDOM@uic.edu.

U.S. POSTAL SERVICE RELEASES DOG ATTACK NATIONAL RANKINGS The number of U.S. Postal Service (USPS) employees attacked by dogs nationwide fell to 5,803 in 2019 — more than 200 fewer than in 2018 and more than 400 fewer since 2017. According to USPS Safety Awareness Program Manager Chris Johnson, technology supports carrier safety in two ways: Mobile Delivery Devices, handheld scanners used by carriers to confirm customer delivery, include a feature to indicate the presence of a dog at an individual address. And the Informed Delivery service alerts customers to mail and packages coming to their homes, allowing them to plan for the carrier’s arrival by securing dogs safely. A total of 5,803 USPS employees were attacked by dogs in 2019. The top 20 rankings comprise 30 cities, as some cities reported the same number of attacks. In 2019, Chicago, Illinois ranked third on the list with 54 attacks.

“THE ECONOMIST US PRESIDENTIAL FORECAST” FINDS THAT JOE BIDEN CURRENTLY HAS 83% CHANCE OF WINNING AMERICA’S PRESIDENCY The Economist recently launched its first-ever statistical forecast of a US presidential election, calculating that Joe Biden currently has 83% chance of winning the presidency. https://economist.com/ us2020model The model, called “The Economist US presidential forecast,” was created by The Economist’s data team with help from Andrew Gelman and Merlin Heidemanns, political scientists at Columbia University. It estimates Joe Biden’s and Donald Trump’s probabilities of winning each individual state and the election overall. To produce these figures, it combines fundamental factors, such as economic conditions, presidential popularity and the amount of time one party has been in power, with polling data at both the national and state level. The model’s projections will be updated daily until the election to reflect the latest available data. G. Elliott Morris, data journalist at The Economist, said: “Among other innovations, The Economist US presidential forecast is the first of its kind to correct for partisan bias inherent in many presidential election polls. We are confident that it will be one of the most accurate forecasts available and will provide the US electorate with a true picture of the race.” The methodology for The Economist’s US election model is open-source and available to anyone here: https://projects.economist.com/us-2020-forecast/ president/how-this-works
Academic Accommodations May Rise Following Pandemic, according to the Cognitive Assessment Group Continued from page 1 Educational accommodations, in which children with learning disabilities, ADHD, autism and other diagnosed psychological conditions receive individualized educational services to maximize their success, have long been a crucial lifeline for families. Now, as parents find themselves in the unprecedented position of having children stay at home and attend school remotely during the COVID-19 crisis, many are noticing learning obstacles they had not detected before, said Dr. Wilfred van Gorp, a neuropsychologist who directs the Cognitive Assessment Group in New York City and Chicago. When a child learns differently or is unable to adequately process and understand a curriculum the way most of his or her peers do, it is essential that alternate forms of teaching and measuring skills be implemented. This requires diagnostics and treatment, so that families and educators can follow the best course of action. Students, from kindergarten through high school, have had to adapt to online learning, with parents now getting a front-row seat to how their children approach and grapple with their schoolwork. “Parents rarely saw their children tackle academic classes, outside of homework assignments, but now they are sitting with their children every day in these virtual classrooms, gaining powerful insights about what obstacles they face and seeking answers to help them better achieve success,” said Dr. van Gorp, a past President of American Academy of Clinical Neuropsychology. “As a result, we have seen an increase in parents who suspect children may have autism, ADHD, and other conditions that require an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP), accommodations for standardized tests and other strategies to help them reach their potential.” Increasingly, that has meant parents making inquiries of educational and mental health professions about having their children assessed for a range of learning disabilities and psychological conditions, from ADHD to dyslexia to autism. Dr. van Gorp has spent more than 30 years in practice and administers hundreds of diagnostic tests each year to children and adults, both for academic accommodations and for career strategy. www.citizennewspapergroup.com
Students, from kindergarten through high school, have had to adapt to online learning, with parents now getting a front-row seat to how their children approach and grapple with their schoolwork.
In one instance, he conducted neuropsychological evaluations with three brothers, from 15 to 21 years old, all of whom required special accommodations, from high school and into young adulthood and into their early working life. Dr. van Gorp not only performed the evaluations, he remained a trusted advisor and mentor, the boys’ mother said. “The doctor just went above and beyond what I expected,” said the mother, who asked that her name not be used. “Even now, any issue we have, we just call him and he helps us.” She said one of her sons, who suffers from ADHD and dyslexia, had a hard time establishing trust with any therapist until he met Dr. van Gorp. “It’s not in his nature to really open up, but with Dr. van Gorp he opened up,” she said. “Dr. Van Gorp was able to get through to him, the way he listened, and now he has given us so much hope.” Because of their conditions, her sons were able to access resources to attend private schools that can provide them with the kinds of IEPs they were unable to have in public school. For one of her now adult sons, Dr. van Gorp continues to counsel and advise him on career decisions. Expect Resistance from School Districts According to a news release, systems are generally not incentivized to diagnose learning disabilities and similar conditions. Teachers, particularly in public schools in large urban centers, face large classrooms with a broad range of students, making individual accommodations difficult.
School districts face budget pressures and IEPs can be more costly, requiring staff and other resources to plan and manage them. Often, parents will not investigate alternatives for their children if they are not first flagged by teachers or school administrators, the news release stated. With home-schooling now often the only choice during the pandemic, however, parents are seeing the signs themselves and seeking out professional help. With many psychologists now offering remote and telehealth sessions, cognitive assessments are being conducted and this could result in an increase in accommodations, beginning with the 2020-21 school year. High school students had SAT and ACT tests canceled this spring, but will need to take those exams as soon as they are offered again so that they can be eligible for accommodations in college. Parents who are concerned their children may have learning disabilities will need to have their children assessed to determine if they are able to complete the tests in the time allotted or require accommodations, to level the playing field, and give them a chance to maximize their academic potential, the news releases continued. “The pandemic has introduced new realities into our society and education system, which may well result in a growth in applications for educational accommodations,” added Dr. van Gorp. UIC joins network dedicated to preparing future STEM faculty The University of Illinois at Chicago has been named one of six new members of the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning, or CIRTL, an academic network of top research universities devoted to developing and expanding proven STEM teaching practices to educate diverse populations of students. Members of the network, which includes 43 institutions in the U.S and Canada, are commissioned to develop learning cohorts for graduate students in science, technology, engineering, math and social sciences that are built around the center’s core ideas of teaching-as-research, learning communities and learning-through-diversity. One of the goals of CIRTL is to improve the STEM learning of all students at every college and university, and thereby to increase the diversity in STEM fields and the STEM literacy of the nation. UIC — which is among the top 20 ethnically diverse national universities according to U.S. News & World Report and is federally designated as a Minority-Serving Institution, American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution, and Hispanic-Serving Institution — serves as a fitting institution to advance the network’s teaching and learning objectives. “We are excited about developing our

Law And Order And White Supremacy BY OSCAR H. BLAYTON
As a young child, I was unfortunate enough to have a trace of reddish hair and relatively pale skin for a Black person – remnants of an interracial rape three generations distant in my family tree. While I measured my misfortune in personal terms – being taunted by my elementary schoolmates as “a little white boy” – the greater dilemma my physical appearance evidenced was the catastrophe of white supremacy that has plagued the entire world over the past four centuries. The rape of my African American great-grandmother by a white man was ignored by law enforcement authorities in the western North Carolina county where the crime was committed because it was not that unusual an occurrence. The rape of Black women by white men at that time and in that part of our nation occurred frequently. On the other hand, any suspicion of rape of a white woman by a Black man produced howls of rage and an execution, usually by lynching after torture. The lynching of Black folk was

almost always done in the name of “law and order.” Something of value to the white community had to be protected. It was this way during the days of slavery. It is this way today. And to clearly understand how this was able to take place all these years, we must understand what law is. Law is a process of authoritative control, where certain empowered community members establish and maintain a particular public order. In the 1880s in North Carolina, that particular public order allowed white men to rape Black women with impunity while dealing a death sentence to any Black man who was
believed to have assaulted a white woman. The laws were not written in the books that way, but neither are today’s laws that allow armed white murderers to be taken into custody alive, while unarmed Black men are summarily executed by police for selling cigarettes without a license. Law is more than the written statutes and the constitutions. It is also the implementation and execution of written and unwritten notions of public order. If a police officer or a judge deems it in the best interest of public order to treat Blacks one way and whites another, then that is the law unless and until a higher authority steps in. That is the law, but it is not justice. Americans usually are not taught the difference between “law” and “justice,” and by conflating the two, we are blinded to the injustice of many laws and the manner of their execution. When the Nazis were empowered to establish and maintain their public order, it was “legal” in Germany to do the horrific things they did to Jews and members of other minority groups. But after World War II, the Nazis were no www.citizennewspapergroup.com
longer empowered, and under a new law of that land, their acts were declared criminal and several were hanged. Many laws in America are unjust, and many more are executed in an unjust manner. Until we confront this and acknowledge it, we will live in a land plagued with injustice. Race-based laws reigned supreme in the American South until the federal government developed the will to strip Southern states of their powers to allow the rape, murder, robbery and dehumanization of African Americans. But this was lowhanging fruit. The segregationists and race haters were so disgustingly vile that America could not hold its head up in the global community if it allowed their crimes to continue unchecked. Unfortunately, it took tragedies like the murder of 14-year-old Emmett Till for America to stop and reflect on what was happening. But once the low-hanging fruit was plucked and the Ku Klux Klan and segregationists like Alabama Gov. George Wallace were driven back into the shadows, the cancer of white supremacy was left to fester and
metastasize throughout the body politic of this nation. Today, we have the murder of George Floyd, yet another unarmed Black man, by yet another white police officer and there is a new awakening of the American conscience. Floyd’s murder is a clear symptom of the out-of-control cancer of white supremacy in this country. The whole world sees it and their protests let us know that they do not like it. Americans who claim to be law-and-order advocates can now be asked: What law? What order? What justice? Why do those elected officials who claim to champion law and order go silent when a police officer breaks the law and murders a Black victim? I do not expect the “law-andorder politicians” to respond to these questions. However, fair-minded Americans should weigh those hypocrites on the scales of justice, and if they find them wanting, remove them from office. Oscar H. Blayton is a former Marine Corps combat pilot and human rights activist who practices law in Virginia.

As the number of those living with dementia grows, experts offer advice on how to be a compassionate caregiver StatePoint - Dementia can be devastating for the people who live with it and their family members, and it’s a diagnosis more Americans will face as the U.S. population ages. In the next 20 years, the total number of those living with Alzheimer’s disease or other types of dementia in the U.S. is expected to approximately double from 7.2 million to nearly 13 million, according to the Milken Institute. “As the life a person always knew becomes increasingly unfamiliar, caregivers can play an important role in helping ease anxiety,” says Jennifer Sheets, president and chief executive officer of Interim HealthCare Inc., an in-home healthcare and assistance provider that takes a positive approach to caring for those with dementia. “With the right knowledge, a caregiver can help their loved one cope with the changes they are experiencing.” Dementia is caused by physical changes in the brain and while there any many kinds of dementia, Alzheimer’s is the most common. In recognition of Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month, commemorated in June, Interim HealthCare recommends three

practical tips for compassionate caregiving: 1. Use the hand-under-hand technique: Hand-under-Hand is a technique that caregivers can use to reduce anxiety and calm a person with dementia. The base or heal of the hand is a highly sensitive area. Put slight pressure on that area by clasping your loved one’s dominant hand. This technique works best
if you put your hand underneath theirs. That gives them a feeling of control as well as calms them. 2. Acknowledge evolving tastes: A person living with dementia experiences a range of sensory and cognitive changes that can
Tripadvisor Releases Findings of a Staged Recovery Tripadvisor® recently released the findings of a multi-month study that analyzed consumer travel sentiment and first party behavioral data related to the ongoing pandemic. The report outlines a five-stage recovery for the travel and hospitality industry, inclusive of the period of decline created by the pandemic through the anticipated market recovery and the return of international travel. The research paper, entitled “Beyond COVID-19: The Road to Recovery for the Travel Industry,” can be read in full, for free, here: https:// www.tripadvisor.com/Covid19WhitepaperMay2020. affect their appetite and food preferences. Indeed, your loved one’s favorite foods may now have a negative smell or taste to them. While maintaining good nutrition is essential, don’t force these foods or argue over them. Instead, offer a variety of balanced foods: vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low-fat dairy products and lean proteins, in small servings at first until you understand new preferences. Realize these preferences may change again. 3. Carve out time for art and music: Once a person is diagnosed with dementia, their ability to act independently greatly diminishes. However, artwork and music allow for freedom of expression, which over time, can be quite impactful in relieving anxiety. Remember, it’s about the creative process, not your loved one’s abilities. So, set aside 3045 minutes weekly for art or music and consider participating alongside them. Committed to helping caregivers find the strength and stamina
needed to provide compassionate support, Interim HealthCare has based its care approach on the methodology of Teepa Snow, an international leader in the Positive Approach to Care (PAC) philosophy. To that end, many caregivers and clinicians in the Interim HealthCare network participate in PAC training rooted in learning care techniques that can ease anxiety, as well as in understanding what a person living with dementia can still do -- even as the journey continues to become more difficult for them over time. Los Angeles-based entrepreneur Elizabeth Faraut, who created a new category within the eyewear industry 20 years ago with the iconic LA LOOP, has created a new product, LA MASK, a hand-designed solution to today’s omnipresent need for one to wear a mask in public places and the difficulty of keeping track of them. The concept for LA MASK came when Faraut was faced with trips outside her home on weekly runs to the market and it was too easy to leave a mask behind. As the LA LOOP is the simple way to hang one’s eyewear around the neck, LA MASK performs the same function for masks. “As shelter-at-home became the new normal, it didn’t take me long to figure out that going grocery shopping early on Sunday morning was the way to go. And while I may have realized the best times to shop, there were snags along the way - when I would arrive at the market and realized I had forgotten my mask, creating LA MASK was a necessity,” says Faraut. LA MASK can be purchased with or without a mask. When worn with a mask, LA MASK can hang from one’s neck with the mask hanging against the chest so that it is at one’s fingertips ready to be put on at a moment’s notice. When the mask is removed (by unclipping the clasps) LA MASK is a necklace or can be wrapped around the wrist and worn as a bracelet. LA MASK is handmade in Los Angeles. The Vintage masks collection by LA MASK uses vintage fabrics like Guatemalan Indigo, seersucker blue and white pin striped cotton and Italian linens. ENTERTAINMENT NFL Continues Strong Social Justice Initiative with $250 Million Commitment BY STACY M. BROWN NNPA Newswire Senior Correspondent @StacyBrownMedia
Voltaren teams up with music superstar Paula Abdul (pictured) to inspire people everywhere to rediscover the joy of movement.
GSK Consumer Healthcare teams up with Paula Abdul for the launch of Voltaren Arthritis Pain Gel GlaxoSmithKline (LSE/NYSE: GSK) has announced that Voltaren Arthritis Pain Gel (diclofenac sodium topical gel, 1% (NSAID) arthritis pain reliever) recently became available over-the-counter (OTC) online and in stores nationwide, providing the over 30 million osteoarthritis patients across the country broader access to a leading pain relief option. To launch the OTC offering, Voltaren is teaming up with music superstar Paula Abdul, who uses Voltaren for her arthritis pain. Staying active is important for arthritis patients everywhere, and together, Voltaren and Paula Abdul will inspire people to “rediscover the joy of movement.” “I’m excited to partner with Voltaren Arthritis Pain Gel to share my personal journey with arthritis and success using Voltaren,” Abdul said. “I’ve put my joints through a lot over the years. Dancing, jumping, flipping – it’s my heart and soul, but I’ve been pushing my joints to the limit for decades as a result. When I was diagnosed with arthritis, my doctor prescribed Voltaren, which made a huge difference in relieving my pain and helping me move with ease. I am so excited it’s now available OTC at stores nationwide.” Joint pain due to arthritis symptoms is a daily reality for millions of people in the United States, and with many people across the country staying at home more

often, finding arthritis pain relief is more important than ever. In a recent study of 1,000 U.S. adults aged 35+ suffering from joint pain conducted by Voltaren in partnership with Wakefield Research, 82 percent of respondents said their physical activity has decreased as a result of more time at home, and 92 percent of respondents report that their joint pain is the same or more severe during this time. “Stay-at-home orders led to a unique set of challenges for those with arthritis,” said Jissan Cherian, director, U.S. OTC Marketing at GSK Consumer Healthcare. “Now, more than ever, we need to offer solutions that help ease the challenge of joint pain and inspire arthritis patients to rediscover the joy of movement, even as we adapt to changing routines and a new way of life.” As an alternative to pills, Voltaren

treats joint pain by delivering medicine at the source, and is absorbed through the skin and not through the stomach and is applied directly to the site of pain. “As the world leader in pain relief, we have seen how Voltaren has helped people with osteoarthritis treat their pain and improve their quality of life” Cherian said. “The OTC availability of Voltaren Arthritis Pain helps to provide greater access to an effective topical treatment option for joint pain patients, so more people with osteoarthritis pain can find relief.” Voltaren Arthritis Pain Gel is now available online and at most major retailers nationwide.

The National Football League’s social justice initiative has continued to inspire change in underserved communities, including a $250 million commitment to bring awareness, dialogue, and a renewed direction to the conversation of racial and social inequality. On Thursday, June 11, officials revealed exclusively to Black Press USA, that the commitment includes dedicated financial resources from the league, clubs, and players to nonprofits. The commitment is also a league-wide amplification of inspiring stories of players making differences in their communities and society and deploying public policy and government affairs resources at the local, state, and national levels. In the 2019 season, NFL teams participated in or hosted more than 500 social justice events. Since 2017, teams have contributed $44 million from sources including social justice grants approved by the league’s players and owner’s workgroup; the NFL Foundation matching grants; an ongoing financial commitment to the Player’s Coalition; and as part of 32 teams’ social justice matching funds. “What inspired [the NFL] is the players lending their voices, their work, to issues of social injustice and racial injustice,” stated Anna Isaacson, the NFL’s senior vice president of social responsibility and community relations. “This work didn’t start yesterday. Around 2016 and 2017, Colin Kaepernick and other players raised their voices and protested and started a movement which then inspired the NFL and our ownership to launch our Social Justice Initiatives.” As a result of those efforts, continued discussions and dialogue, Isaacson said the NFL prioritized four key areas: education, economic
advancement, criminal justice reform, and community and police relations. Kaepernick, the former San Francisco 49ers star quarterback famously took a knee during the playing of the national anthem to protest social and racial injustice. However, the Super Bowl quarterback’s protest was widely misconstrued and condemned by many, and teams have failed to sign the former star. In the wake of continued police violence against African Americans and the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, the NFL recently issued an apology for failing to understand the scope of the injustice African Americans have faced. “Over the last couple of weeks, we’ve been watching what’s going on, and there have been tons of discussions about what else we can do, how can we make it clear that this is an authentic and long-term commitment from the NFL,” Isaacson told Black Press USA. “That commitment is a standard $250 million over 10 years,” she stated. Isaacson noted that the league’s 100-year history hasn’t just been about football. “We’d be nowhere without our fans, and nowhere without our players and the communities that invest in us,” she pronounced. “We’ve always been about investing in our communities, and a lot of that investment has been in underserved communities, Black communities, and communities of color. Whether it be on cancerrelated work, health and wellness, physical activities, or domestic violence. What the NFL players have brought to the forefront over the past couple of years have been the importance of bringing community and law enforcement together. We’ve put our resources, money, and time into education and awareness. The NFL has stood for communities and giving back to communities, and particularly underresourced and underfunded communities.”

SUBSCRIBE. DONATE. ADVERTISE. During times of crisis, crucial information about your community comes from local reporters. Access to high quality information is essential. Especially local information. And especially now. What’s happening in our communities? What’s the impact? How are our local leaders responding? For answers to these questions, we rely on the hard work of our local reporters. As a result, readership of local news outlets has reached record highs.

But due to COVID-19, most local news publications are losing money, fast. Advertising has plummeted during the crisis and readers aren’t subscribing fast enough to fill the void. This has led to thousands of local reporters being laid off. Just as our society faces numerous, urgent challenges. Millions of people are in danger of losing access to the authoritative local
information they need to stay informed. That’s why the Local Media Association and the Local Media Consortium are working with local news providers to build a strong future for local journalism. And that’s why our long-time partner Google is purchasing ads like this in local publications across the country, as well as providing a Relief Fund to help struggling local news outlets. But those actions alone aren’t enough.
Please consider supporting the local news organizations you rely on. Subscribe to them. Donate to them. And if you have a business that’s able to, advertise with them. Your support is critical to sustaining the dedicated journalists serving your communities. Our local news outlets help keep us safer. Let’s help keep them open.
