PERCEPTIONS THEATRE

HIGHLIGHTS PLAYWRIGHTS OF COLOR IN FESTIVAL Myesha-Tiara was in college when she decided she wanted to start a theater company. She was in a theater class and saw all the actors of color and thought they should have a space to perform. In 2019, she founded Perceptions Theatre. From July 10th and 11th Perceptions Theatre hosted its second annual BIPOC Play Festival.

briefly CHICAGO PUBLIC SCHOOLS AND CITY COLLEGES OF CHICAGO LAUNCH STUDENT OUTREACH AND RE-ENGAGEMENT (SOAR) CENTER IN ENGLEWOOD

Chicago Public Schools (CPS) and City Colleges of Chicago (CCC) this week opened the Englewood SOAR Center at Kennedy-King College to strengthen educational opportunities and outcomes for students, ages 15-21. Through the SOAR centers, a cohort of about 20 chronically truant and out-of-school youth are provided with guidance and support over six weeks to determine the best pathways for re-engagement and high school graduation. Participants are also provided access to adult education, CCC credit, and certifications. The Englewood location is one of four SOAR Centers in the city, strategically located in neighborhoods with the highest concentration of youth vulnerable to truancy and dropping out of school. The centers, detailed in the below table, have served more than 13,000 students since the program’s inception in 2013. The program supports students with one-on-one mentoring, workshops, transcript evaluations, and graduation planning. Stipends of $150 were made available to students who registered to join the first cohort. To learn more about SOAR Centers, residents can email soar@cps.edu, call 773-553-5103.

MAYOR LIGHTFOOT AND CDOT CUT RIBBON ON MOTOR ROW STREETSCAPE

Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot joined Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) Commissioner Gia Biagi and 3rd Ward Alderman Pat Dowell to cut the ribbon on the recently completed streetscape project along Michigan Avenue between Cermak and 24th Place. The Motor Row streetscape implements a “road diet” that reduces the previous four travel lanes to three, reducing crossing distances for pedestrians. Other improvements include widened sidewalks, new crosswalks, new landscaping, and LED smart lighting. The enhancements encourage drivers to slow down and make it easier for pedestrians to cross safely. The improved streetscape at Motor Row features safety improvements that help address the recent increase in traffic fatalities citywide: Reduced Pedestrian Crossing Distance — Decreasing the number of travel lanes limits pedestrians’ time exposed in the roadway and increases their visibility to drivers when crossing the street. Improved Crosswalks — 20-foot continental crosswalk at 23rd Street helps drivers see pedestrians sooner and slow down earlier. Decreased Travel Lanes — Reducing the number of travel lanes from 4 to 3 forces drivers to slow down when approaching the crosswalk LED Smart Lighting — New lights and hanging baskets increase visibility for drivers and pedestrians alike. Widened Sidewalks — Increasing sidewalk width provides more room for pedestrians to maneuver. The streetscape at Motor Row also features aesthetic improvements that will have a long-term impact on the surrounding community: Full-width pavement resurfacing Parkway improvements and beautification New benches, litter receptacles, and bike racks New landscaping and trees Community gateway elements and light pole identifiers Located just west of McCormick Place, Motor Row is now known as an entertainment district; however, the area was originally named Motor Row due to the high concentration of car sales and repair businesses once located along the street. To reflect that history, the design of the custom, lighted identifiers was influenced by the Art Deco and automotive styling of that era. The nearly $11 million streetscape project, funded through two TIFs, was designed in close cooperation with a local task force and community stakeholders. Christopher B. Burke Engineering was the lead design consultant for the project, and Sumit Construction was the lead construction contractor. Duroweld fabricated the gateway community identifiers that welcome all to Motor Row. In addition to investments in infrastructure, Mayor Lightfoot and CDOT will roll out an awareness campaign encouraging drivers to slow down. The campaign, which will appear on digital billboards and social media platforms, highlights the importance of coming together to protect our neighbors and reminds drivers to “Slow Down Chicago.”

Perceptions Theatre Highlights Playwrights of Color in Festival Continued from page 1 BY TIA CAROL JONES

The mission of Perceptions Theatre is to make theater accessible to the African American community. It serves as a training ground for Black, Indigenous, People of Color artists. The theatre hosts its plays out of Studio 2226, located at 2226 E. 71st St. Myesha met Jerlaune Jenkins, BIPOC Festival director, at a theater festival in 2018. They bonded over the lack of representation and started Perceptions to provide the resources they wanted when they were part of that festival. Myesha and Jerlaune wanted their theater company to be located on the South side because of the amazing artists that live in the communities, who might not get the exposure they deserve. With Perceptions’ shows, it is pay what you can, and the goal is to ensure people who want to experience theater do not have finances as a barrier. “We want everybody to be able to see theater, no matter what their economic situation. We know a lot of times when people want extracurriculars, theater tickets can be expensive and we wanted to eliminate that barrier for Black and Brown people in South Shore,” Myesha said. When COVID-19 hit in 2020, Perceptions had to re-evaluate how they present content. They were already holding auditions virtually, so they began to do their content virtually. One of the first performances was the monologues of seven people expressing their feelings about the riots in the wake of the killing of George Floyd. The first BIPOC Play Festival was virtual. This year, it was in-person, with an option to view it virtually after the event.

Perceptions has been helping artists get agents and book jobs. Myesha and Jerlaune want to ensure the knowledge they have gained is shared with people who might not have the kind of access they did. When it comes to representation of Black people and people of color, Myesha acknowledges there is a comfort to being around other Black artists and artists of color. Myesha wants people of color to feel more welcomed and feel that people care about them. “When you’re talking to a Black playwright about their work and their experiences, it just flows so much easier and it’s so natural because you can identify with that. I’m honestly so proud to see there are so many Black playwrights out here,” Myesha said. There are four plays in the BIPOC Play Festival, “Mess” by Carlos Zenner, “The Voice Inside My Head” by Louis Johnson, “Was It Me” by Andrea J. Fulton and “Kingdom” by Nic Bell. The plays were chosen based on whether they were a good fit with Perceptions’ mission and what they believed was needed. Jerlaune said all four plays have very strong messaging. Also, the plays were from artists of color. Jerlaune has experienced as a Black actor, roles that were not written by people who looked like her. It was interesting to her to see people write about the Black experience without having lived it. “For us at Perceptions, we like to have people, especially the actors and directors, to be of color, because they know what they’re directing and what they’re talking about. It speaks a lot to the piece. Black and Brown people should be allowed to write their own stories. It is something that is really missing in our scene today,” Jerlaune said. “It’s time for Black and Brown people to choose how we’re portrayed in these pieces.” From July 11th to Aug. 14th, people are able to view the BIPOC Play Festival Virtually. BASF & Permionics join hands to launch high performance face masks VADODARA, India, PRNewswire -- BASF has joined hands with Vadodara-based membrane manufacturer, Permionics Membranes, to extend, for the first time, the application of BASF’s Ultrason E polyethersulphone (PESU) polymer into coated fabrics that serve as particulate and bacterial filter for face masks. The face masks using the fabric as a middle layer are highly breathable, washable and re-usable unlike conventional face masks. They are designed for usage in the Indian healthcare market. Permionics selected Ultrason E for its coated fabric, Perma Bioshield. The fabric is made by adhering an antimicrobial coating made of Ultrason E to the matrix of a non-woven fabric as a bonded support. Ultrason E is a high purity material with low gel and oligomer content that ensures a stable membrane manufacturing process. PESU can be used in a wide pH range (0-13) without deterioration. It is especially suitable for the production of durable hollow-fibre membranes and filters for use in the food, beverage, electronics and pharmaceutical industries. “In the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for developing and manufacturing high-efficiency particulate and

bacterial filters for face masks has become a priority across the world. Ultrason E turns out to be an ideal choice for the coating of Perma Bioshield as the material allows for a better narrow pore size control and a good adhesion to non-woven fabrics. These are two features which are key to the removal of bacteria, dust and pollution,” said Mr. Satyajai Mayor, Managing Director, Permionics. Currently, the Perma Bioshield is used in several types of face masks in India, manufactured by a leading healthcare company. Apart from use in face masks, Perma Bioshield is also an ideal filter for breathable medical gowns and clothing used in hospitality and airline industries, high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter replacements, as well as antimicrobial and dust-proof blinds or screens. Permionics has the unique distinction of being the FIRST company in India till date to ingenuously manufacture Reverse Osmosis (RO), Ultra-Filtration(Ultra-filtration), Nano-Filtration Membranes for various process-specific applications and Waste Water Recycling, Zero Liquid Discharge, Purified Water, Desalination of Sea Water and USP purified water system.

The Obama Foundation recently announced the creation of the Local Lunchbox Chicago pilot project that aims to provide more than 100,000 meals this summer. The healthy food program connects nonprofits, schools, and other community organizations that serve young people across Chicago with local chefs to serve delicious, healthy, and culturally relevant meals to kids and teens 18 and under. The pilot project, created in partnership with the Shah Family Foundation, will be entirely funded by the United States Department of Agriculture. “I am delighted that we are launching this partnership to help feed children across the city in collaboration with a network of outstanding community partners, local minority-owned businesses, and talented local chefs,” said Obama Foundation CEO, Valerie Jarrett. “At the Obama Foundation, our mission is to make sure young people have the tools and resources they need to go out and change the world for the better. And for more young people to thrive and reach for their dreams, they’ve got to have access to the fundamentals which include healthy, familiar, and delicious food—and that’s exactly what the Local Lunchbox program is all about.” Local Lunchbox was founded in Chelsea, Massachusetts, in June 2020 by the Shah Family Foundation, an organization that supports transformative work in education, health care, and the community. Over the past two years, Local Luchbox has expanded to dozens of locations across

Massachusetts and distributed over five million meals, operated by a network of food businesses, community organizations, and schools. Local Lunchbox can operate under any United States Department of Agriculture Child Nutrition Program in any community. The Obama Foundation and its community partners will be the first organizations to bring the program to the city of Chicago. “Local Lunchbox is a win-win for any community, providing fresh, delicious and culturally-relevant meals free for kids while also providing a boost to local restaurants and businesses,” said Jill Shah, President of the Shah Family Foundation. “We’re thrilled to partner with the Obama Foundation in expanding this proven model to millions of young people across Chicago.” The Lunchbox program connects to the themes of health and wellness planned for the Obama Presidential Center and youth programming. The Obama Presidential Center will have its very own Fruit & Vegetable Garden which will be a place where young people and community members can get their hands dirty and learn about growing healthy produce—inspired by Mrs. Obama’s White House Kitchen Garden. Meals will be distributed at various sites across the city, including After School Matters, Gary Comer Youth Center, and YMCA. POLITICAL AFFAIRS

LIGHTFOOT FOR CHICAGO RAISES $1.25 MILLION FOR SECOND QUARTER Lightfoot for Chicago Has More than $2.5 Million Cash on Hand Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot’s reelection campaign announced today that it raised more than $1.25 million for the second quarter of 2022, ending the quarter with $2.5 million cash on hand. “I’m so grateful to the supporters who are Ridin’ with Lori and have joined our reelection campaign,” said Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot. “When I announced my reelection bid last month, I promised to never back down from the tough fights that lie ahead. I will continue to tackle our biggest problems head on, like continuing to bring down violent crime, standing up for women’s bodily autonomy and access to high quality reproductive care, helping bridge the financial burdens that too many Chicagoans face and continuing investments in neighborhoods that have been neglected for decades. Change doesn’t happen overnight, but we are seeing what happens when we join together and focus on making a difference in people’s lives. I am honored by the support of so many Chicagoans and I will keep fighting everyday for you. Since assuming office following her historic election in 2019, Mayor Lightfoot has undertaken an ambitious agenda of expanding opportunity and inclusive economic growth across Chicago’s neighborhoods and communities. She has led the city through the unprecedented challenges of a global pandemic with tough, fair leadership – all while keeping her campaign promises. Mayor Lightfoot has: Increased Chicago’s minimum wage to $15.40 an hour for hundreds of thousands of workers. Expanded funding for community-based violence prevention and implemented measures to combat gang violence. Championed the creation of a new civilian police oversight body, advancing Chicago on a path toward police reform. Forged an equitable and inclusive vaccine distribution program and made unprecedented investments in public health, with a particular focus on the communities most devastated by the virus. Passed transformative, unprecedented budgets, including historic investments in affordable housing, youth programs, mental health and environmental justice.

DEMOCRAT CANDIDATE FOR U.S. CONGRESS OF THE 7TH DISTRICT KINA COLLINS THANK SUPPORTERS FOR THEIR SUPPORT OF HER DURING ILLINOIS RECENT PRIMARY ELECTION Dear Friends, It has been just over a week since our election on June 28th, and now that we have had a few days to recharge and reflect, I wanted to reach out, and express my deepest gratitude to all of you. This election was about giving our city a better vision for the future. A future free of gun violence where we take on the corporate class with Green New Deal union jobs, universal healthcare, and a fully funded public education. A future where we strengthen our labor movement, protect our reproductive rights, and finally end poverty. The campaign that we built together showed everyone that a young Black woman from the West Side of Chicago can take on the Chicago machine without a dime of corporate money. My opponent had to call in every political favor, from the President of the United States & Speaker of the House, to the Mayor of Chicago and the Governor of Illinois, only to barely win. I am proud to say that after 40,000 doors knocked, 300,000 phones called, and over $840,000 raised, they can never ignore our movement again. I am so grateful to all of you for every donation, every knock on a door, every house party, every phone call, every parade, and every meeting that you made possible over the course of this campaign. Together, we transformed our political landscape. This isn’t the end, it’s just the beginning.

MyOwnDoctor Announces Heart & Health App CHICAGO -- MyOwnDoctor, an Illinois-based telehealth company, today announced the launch of the free Heart & Health app, which will provide users with a multitude of culturally specific mental health resources and services beginning in September 2022. The MyOwnDoctor Heart & Health app is designed to address the mental healthcare epidemic in America rooted in racebased traumatic stress. The app’s services will include weekly free webinars featuring MyOwnDoctor’s mental health experts and will cover a wide range of timely topics— from managing stress and anxiety, to tips for building healthy relationships, to coping with daily stress of racism, discrimination, sexism and violence. Multiple crises in America—including a spike in racially motivated violence and gun violence and too few mental health providers, especially in Black communities—have increased the need for culturally specific health care services such as those that MyOwnDoctor provides. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) reported that 2020 marked the highest spike in reported hate crimes since 2012. Incidents targeting people because of their race increased more than any other category, with the Black community seeing the largest increase. At the same time, the U.S. suffers from a shortage of mental health providers, particularly in Black and Latinx communities. Only 3 percent of U.S. psychologists

citizennewspapergroup.com

are Black and only 7 percent are Latinx, according to the American Psychological Association. “Everyone has the right to good health—including mental health—but not everyone has access to mental health resources or providers who understand and relate to their lived experiences,” says Cheryle Jackson, Chief Executive Officer at MyOwnDoctor. “The Heart & Health app offers free access to culturally specific mental health providers, which research has shown can improve health outcomes for patients.” According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, African Americans are 20 percent more likely to experience a serious mental illness and 25 percent more likely to experience symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder. Despite these realities, fewer than one in three receive treatment. “A recent study showed that 63 percent of Black participants believed that having a mental health issue represented a personal weakness,” says Dr. Jay Weems, Chief Mental Health Officer at MyOwnDoctor and doctorate in Clinical Psychology. “It’s difficult to improve treatment outcomes when there are so many barriers to that treatment—including barriers like shame and stigma that we construct ourselves. Free, culturally specific care makes it possible to overcome those barriers.”

Americans still have financial goals, just not sure how they will reach them “Consumers often think they aren’t in a position to take advantage of sound wealthbuilding strategies that will benefit them over time, when there are technology tools out there like Digit that can help them find ways to save and invest .”

(BPT) - If you have a vision for where you’d like to be financially in the coming years but no clear idea of how to get there - you’re far from alone. In fact, a recent survey by Wakefield Research and financial services company Digit (now a part of Oportun) found that 78% of American adults with financial goals have no strategy in place for reaching those goals. Unfortunately, with challenges like student loan debt and rising inflation, financial planning is more difficult than it has ever been. These challenges may mean people are missing out on opportunities to build financial security and prosperity as they move through their lives, at any monthly income. “Although most of us recognize the importance of smart financial planning, money management is challenging, complex and time-consuming,” notes Snigdha Kumar, head of product operations for Digit. “Consumers often think they aren’t in a position to take advantage of sound wealth-building strategies that will benefit them over time, when there are technology tools out there like Digit that can help them find ways to save and invest .” That concerning trend is reflected in

these other survey findings: * Young people are especially concerned about having no financial plans in place; those who say they’re worried include 95% of Gen Z-ers, 92% of millennials, 84% of Gen X-ers and 60% of baby boomers. * Nearly three in five respondents (58%) consider managing their money more mentally demanding than solving crossword puzzles. * Respondents spend an average four hours per month managing their money, and in spite of AI technology tools that could help them, 37% rely on pen-andpaper methods to do so - including 30% of Gen Z-ers and 28% of millennials. * A significant 44% reported being at least somewhat likely to dip into their savings during the first three months of 2022, and 27% said they were very likely to do so. * A full 13% of all respondents (and 19% of women respondents) say they have no savings at all from which to draw. The good news is that Digit by Oportun can help you manage your money with confidence and less stress by intelligently (and automatically) budgeting, saving and investing according to your short-term

needs and long-term goals. Digit uses advanced technology to analyze your full financial picture and make smart money decisions for you - with no need for additional tools or mental math. Available for download on Apple or Android devices, Digit members are setting aside more than $3,000 per year on average (based on daily average saves of all paying Digit members in 2021). As Kumar points out, having a solid financial plan in place can mean more than just financial freedom. In fact, 92% of survey respondents report feeling less daily anxiety when their finances are under control. And 70% of those who directly manage their own finances (including those who use apps for that purpose) report having a positive relationship with money. “There’s really no substitute for financial peace of mind,” Kumar advises. “And there’s no longer any need to spend hours each month trying to determine the best courses of action for managing your hardearned money. AI technology can streamline that process on your behalf so you can spend that time and energy elsewhere, but still know you’re on a sound financial path.”

It’s an accessible collection that embraces joy with vibrant and tropical designs fitting for the summer season.” “We’re delighted to have had the opportunity to collaborate with Studio 189 on this beautiful collection,” says Denise Magid, Executive Vice President and General Merchandise Manager for Ready-to-Wear, Center Core, Concessions and Bloomingdale’s Outlets. “As a brand that works with artisanal communities that specialize in various traditional craftsmanship techniques, Studio Looks from Bloomingdale’s exclu- 189 brings bold, inspired new looks sive AQUA x Studio 189 collection. to our beloved and best-selling AQUA PRNewsFoto portfolio this summer.” COLLECTION INSPIRATION & COLLABORATIVE PROCESS

The AQUA x Studio 189 collection entitled “AKUA” was born on a Wednesday during New York Fashion Week after Bloomingdale’s Creative Director of AQUA Erica Ruff Hatfield contacted designer Abrima Erwiah to collaborate following Studio 189’s SS2022 Runway Show. “In Ghana, we are named after the days of the week. For example, Abrima is Nzema for Tuesday born. I felt very moved by this idea of birthing a new project “AKUA” when I was contacted by Bloomingdale’s and AQUA,” says Erwiah. Akua is an Akan female name for a girl child born on Wednesday and is derived from deities. Akua is said to be a champion for the cause of others. Erwiah continued, “This was fitting because the goal of this collaboration was to allow Studio 189 to create more work for the communities we serve in Africa. We were able to produce more than 20,000 yards of hand-made fabric and activate rural communities that really need the work especially considering the effects of the pandemic and rising prices. This was also our first time producing in Asia which is where AQUA produces. We learned new ways of working via skills transfer from AQUA’s family-run factory that is based in LA, Korea and China. This was a true collaboration in every way. The team we worked with has been spectacular and have helped us to achieve our mission in providing jobs, to empowering women in disenfranchised communities, and to support education and skills training.” AQUA X STUDIO 189: ACCESSIBLE & ARTISAN-MADE

The AQUA x Studio 189 collection features vibrant prints produced by Studio 189 artisans using the art of hand-batiking. This art form starts with patterns carved into wood or sponge that are dipped into hot wax and stamped onto cloth. This cloth is dipped into hand-mixed dyes and then the wax is removed to unveil the finished design. RELATED MIDWEST ANNOUNCES CHICAGO BASED, VETERAN-RUN VETERAN ROASTERS SELECTED AS COMPANY-WIDE COFFEE PROVIDER The Local Coffee Roaster Staffed By U.S. Military Veterans Will Host a Variety of Pop-Ups, Beginning June 30, Across All Related Midwest Construction Sites

CHICAGO—Related Midwest has announced that Veteran Roasters has been selected as the company’s in-office coffee provider, and will also feature the Chicago-based coffee roasters coffee on-site daily at construction projects. In celebration of this partnership, Related Midwest hosted an event at the 900 Randolph job site on June 30 to provide free coffee for hundreds of tradespeople and highlight the U.S. Veterans who make Veteran Roasters so special. Veteran Roasters, founded in 2017, is a veteran-owned and -staffed coffee brand that sources, roasts and distributes its own coffee beans, cold brew and other coffee products from its Chicago-area roastery and warehouse. Veteran Roasters trains its new employees through the production process, finding that many service members’ mechanical aptitude is welcome and needed on the production line. Many tradespeople are also veterans, finding their duty-tested skills well suited to construction and development work. Both Veteran Roasters and its sister company, Rags of Honor, provide veterans with continuing education and housing support as needed, while paying employees a living wage. Rags of Honor is a veteran-staffed Chicago-based screen printing company dedicated, like Veteran Roasters, to the mission of providing employment and services to returning vets. Rags of Honor is the exclusive supplier of safety vests, T-shirts, jackets, vests and other construction and branded gear for both Related Midwest and LR Contracting. “Veteran Roasters empowers veterans to transfer their valuable skills to the civilian workforce, providing

critical support through a challenging transition,” said Related Midwest Executive Vice President Don Biernacki. “We recognize the service of veterans and are proud to contribute to the success of this proud veteran-owned and veteran-staffed business.” “Veteran Roasters is proud to supply top-of-the-line products to Related Midwest and is happy to have Related’s partnership as we invest in our veterans’ long-term success,” said Mark Doyle founder of Veteran Roasters. “Fewer than two percent of Americans serve in the U.S. military, and when they come home very few people understand what they’ve been through. Collaborations like these help ensure that the transition for veterans is the healthy and economically stable experience they deserve.” Related Midwest will pour Veteran Roasters Coffee daily at each of its Chicago-area job sites. To kick off this partnership, Veteran Roasters will be onsite at the 900 Randolph construction site (164 N. Peoria) on June 30 to provide free fresh coffee and promote the company’s mission—to provide high-paying jobs and supportive services to returning veterans. “When I was a helicopter pilot in the Navy, I was focused only on what was in front of me. Life after deployment was too far away to contemplate,” said Branden Marty, CEO of Veteran Roasters. “With partners like Related Midwest, we can ensure that Veterans face fewer challenges and fewer unknowns upon their return.” To learn more about Veteran Roasters, visit veteranroasters.com. (BPT) - Food and gas prices continue to rise, on top of record-high housing costs in many cities across the U.S. If you’re an older adult who is already living on a tight budget, today’s inflation can be particularly difficult. Fortunately, there are programs available that can help you save money on health care, prescriptions, food, utilities and more. One of the easiest ways to find out if you’re eligible for benefits is to visit the National Council on Aging’s BenefitsCheckUp.org. The free and confidential tool connects older adults, people with disabilities and caregivers to benefit programs. The site is easy to use, even for people with minimal digital experience. “It only takes a few minutes to learn about all the programs available and how to apply,” said Ramsey Alwin, president and CEO of NCOA. “For example, there are Medicare programs that can boost your budget by helping with prescription drug costs, as well as premiums, deductibles and coinsurance.” There are thousands of programs on BenefitsCheckUp, including: * The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which can help you pay for healthy food* The Medicare Part D Low Income Subsidy and Medicare Savings Programs, which can help people with Medicare afford their out-of-pocket health care expenses * The Housing Choice Vouchers and Public Housing Programs, which can help with housing costs * Supplemental Security Income, which provides cash for basic needs * The Affordable Connectivity Program, which provides discounted internet services * The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, which can help you pay for home heating and cooling Millions of older adults are eligible for, but not enrolled in these programs. In fact, NCOA estimates that $30 billion in benefits go unused each year simply because older adults don’t know about these programs - or how to apply. BenefitsCheckUp.org will give you a personalized list of benefits you may be eligible for and the steps you need to apply, including links to the correct government agencies and applications. Just a few minutes could save you money every month.

IAMHP and State Legislators Rally Support for Behavioral Healthcare Services Recent incidents such as school shootings, the pandemic and inflation are all factors that could greatly impact mental health. Several measures, designed to improve efficiency and efficacy of behavioral health services, were approved for increased funding during the last legislative session. The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed gaps in healthcare services throughout the country. One such gap, which will be difficult to improve in the short term, is access to behavioral health services amid a significant provider shortage. To address this situation, IAMHP collaborated with legislators on many shared priorities during the last legislative session. “The legislature introduced and passed a number of bills that align with IAMHP’s goals of increasing equitable access to healthcare and supporting providers who treat patients with behavioral healthcare needs, said Samantha Olds Frey, CEO of the Illinois Association of Medicaid Health Plans. Funding for additional training, in the form of academic detailing, offers providers opportunities to enhance their level of expertise in caring for patients with behavioral health disorders. In addition, behavioral health providers will now find it easier to locate appropriate care settings for patients thanks to funding that expands a new system that tracks the availability of inpatient treatment beds. Added to these new measures are simplified billing and payment codes for behavioral health and substance use disorders. For patients in treatment for substance use disorders, additional funds approved cover new Peer Support Services (PSS). Peer Support Services are community based and known to improve treatment outcomes. IAMHP led the initiative to gain this coverage. The Illinois Association of Medicaid Health Plans (IAMHP) is an advocacy, member organization representing the Medicaid managed care health plans (MCOs) operating in the state of Illinois, which includes: Aetna Better Health of Illinois, BlueCross BlueShield of Illinois, CountyCare Health Plan, Humana, Meridian Health and Molina Healthcare. As a member organization for the Medicaid managed care health plans, IAMHP works with the Illinois state government, legislators, advocacy groups and Medicaid patients to invest in and provide high-quality health care focused on cost-effective, individualized care that helps the residents of Illinois live longer and healthier lives.

Bikes & Music Announces Summer “Fun-Raiser!” Group Ride and Cookout to Follow Online Fundraising Drive Bikes & Music, a Chicagoland 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, has a goal to raise $25,000 by August 20, 2022. The funds are needed for the repair of donated bicycles, and for the purchase of new bike helmets and locks. The bikes and equipment will be provided to children and adults in need. Since the start of 2022, Bikes & Music has collected over 100 bicycles throughout Chicagoland. “We received a terrific response to our spring bike drive,” says Bikes & Music co-founder Ryan Gable. “We have supported organizations that are doing amazing work, like Home of the Sparrow and RefugeeOne. We’ve supplied these refurbished bikes along with helmets and locks to children and some adults that need bikes for fun but also as a mode of transportation to work and school!” The challenge now and mission of the fundraiser is to cover the tune-ups and repairs for these bikes. When you add in the cost of helmets and locks, it takes about $100 to get each bike ready to go and into the hands of someone that desperately wants one. Gable explains that repairing used bicycles keeps them out of landfills. “We could almost buy new bikes for what repairs and parts cost sometimes. But we are dedicated to doing the right thing for the planet by recycling bikes that just need a little love. We’re fortunate to have support from two local bike shops (Crank Revolution in Hoffman Estates and Never Ending Cycles in Streamwood) for the safety checks, maintenance and repairs. They do everything they can to keep our costs to a minimum.” Attending the ride is not required. To make a donation to Bik, visit bikesandmusic.org.

COUNTRY LEGEND STONEY EDWARDS’ SIX ALBUMS MAKE STREAMING DEBUT LOS ANGELES, PRNewswire -Stoney Edwards’ personal story filled with the struggle, grit, courage and heart is what has long been the basis for songs that have shaped country music. Also from his debut, “A Few of the Reasons” is a romantic ode with “Your love was there when everything else was gone….” Hailed by critics from Nashville to London, The Nashville Scene praised him as “A wonderful country vocalist and a highly entertaining songwriter who tirelessly beat the bushes on Music Row in the early and mid-’70s. His style interspersed bits of Lefty Frizzell, Merle Haggard, and Hank Williams with his deep, coarse, yet ingratiating delivery.” The Guardian stated, “the former trucker’s recordings were regarded as crying-into-your-beer classics.…” In addition, country stalwart Billy Ray Cyrus, who narrated a new video about Stoney Edwards, said “I was captivated and mesmerized by this story. Put Sustainability on the Family Menu

Serve wild, sustainably produced seafood (Family Features) Cooking delicious family meals is surely the focus of many home chefs, from quick dishes on busy weeknights to homestyle favorites on the weekend. Equally important, however, is dishing up foods and ingredients you can feel good about serving to your loved ones. The next time seafood is on the menu, consider the source of your main course. Available fresh, frozen, smoked and canned year-round and nationwide, seafood from Alaska is sustainably harvested, and you can trust it comes from a responsibly managed fishery. Utilizing a science-based approach, the state sustains the long-term vitality of species and their natural habitats, as well as the fishing communities that rely on them.
