Filmmaker’s Documentaries Showcase Black Athletes
BY TIA CAROL JONES
Wayfarer Theaters, located in Highland Park, Ill., has been curating special screenings of diverse films, with the goal of creating opportunities for conversations. It opened its doors in May 2024, after major renovations.
“Part of our mission is to show films that bring hope, positivity and light to the world. We really focus on messaging that is about uniting, uplifting and inspiring individuals,” said Clay Stamper, General Manager of Wayfarer Theaters.
Wayfarer Theaters carries out its mission in the way it curates the films it shows. Wayfarer Theaters Founder Steve Sarowitz started it with the idea of using the platform and using its capabilities to support local filmmakers. The goal is to give filmmakers a fair opportunity to have their projects exhibited in a way that shows their efforts.
Stamper said it has been great to share Daniels’ work with residents on the North Shore. He said it has been a nice exchange of ideas and goods, which has been good for the community.
“The overall goal is to really show that we are all one and start to expand on the whole idea of diversity and the very beautiful concept that it is, with different stories, different cultures, different people aligning to share commonality and common threads of experience,” Stamper said. He said that is how people grow individually and as a community.
Daniels was told by a friend that he should do a documentary about Johnny Fort. Fort was a point guard in the 1980s and his life took a turn. The documentary goes into his life from past to present. A writer saw the Johnny Fort documentary and reached out to Daniels for help on the Roy Curry documentary. Curry is a former football player who played for Jackson State University and the Pittsburgh Steelers. Both documentaries premiered at the DuSable
Black History Museum and Education Center. Fort said it is an honor to be remembered and have someone do a documentary about his life. He said he believes his story can be very helpful for other people who might be facing the same things he faced. Curry said coming from the cotton fields of Mississippi to playing professional football and coaching children in the city, it is a great story. Curry said the documentary does a great job of telling his story.
“It was like a surreal feeling to have people come out to support the film. Sometimes you don’t know that you really matter until you see it with your own eyes,” Fort said. He said it was overwhelming to see people take their time to see something that represented him.
Daniels said the lives of Fort and Curry have been a blessing to the community. He has been talking to people who want to see a part two, part three and part four of the documentaries. Being able to show African Americans in a positive light in a theater like Wayfarer in Highland Park, which isn’t known for its diversity, is very important to Daniels. He is currently working on a documentary about kindness and has some insights on the subject.
“I think the reason why we can’t be kind to each other is because we don’t understand each other. So, the more you’re exposed to my life and I’m exposed to your life, I can extend you some grace, you can extend me some grace and we can be in a lot better space,” he said.
Daniels said he hopes that people takeaway from the documentaries that Black people have many sides and have made great contributions to this country. He also wants people to take away insights about the human spirit.

Gov. Pritzker Signs Landmark Carbon Capture Bill
DECATUR — Governor JB Pritzker, joined by legislators, environmental advocates, and organized labor leaders, signed SB1289, the Safety and Aid for the Environment in Carbon Capture and Sequestration (SAFE CCS Act), into law. The bill creates nation-leading standards for safety and environmental protection for carbon capture, transport, and sequestration projects in Illinois. Thanks to carbon capture tax credits in the Inflation Reduction Act, this act will also drive investment in Illinois and create hundreds of jobs as companies are incentivized to move carbon capture to Illinois.
“Every reduction in planetary warming, no matter how marginal, represents billions in potential savings for our economy and likely thousands of lives-- and here in Illinois, that is a responsibility we take seriously,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “It is a testament to the ingenuity of this group that we conceived and passed this legislation while prioritizing the health and safety of our people, catalyzing job growth and investment in our economy, and protecting our air, water, and soil.”
The SAFE CCS Act sets regulations around carbon capture, including requiring new carbon sequestration facilities to obtain a state permit with requirements for monitoring during and after carbon sequestration, as well as rules around financial assurances, insurance, emergency management, and closure plans. The law places a two-year moratorium on new pipelines, a timeline which could be shortened if the Pipelines and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration finalizes crucial safety regulations. This makes Illinois just the second state to place a hold on CO2 pipeline development.
The act also requires CO2 projects to achieve a net reduction in greenhouse gases and conduct water, air, and soil monitoring to ensure no leaks occur, and take immediate corrective action if they do. New projects must go through a rigorous and transparent assessment process by the Illinois Commerce Commission and require plans to monitor carbon capture and transport sites and respond immediately if any issues arise. The law also sets high safety standards for any new pipelines in the state and mandates training and support for first responders in pipeline areas.
The Biden-Harris administration has allocated billions in grants and tax incentives for states and companies building out carbon capture and sequestration projects. These incentives alongside the SAFE CCS Act are expected to bring up to $9 billion
in investment to Illinois and create up to 3,700 jobs—many of them union positions.
Carbon capture is a major tool for reducing emissions and mitigating climate change. The carbon capture process involves extracting carbon dioxide, transporting through pipelines, and storing in safe deposits deep underground. This is especially essential to minimize the climate impact from industries that have struggled to decarbonize and move to clean energy. Governor Pritzker has been a leader in clean energy and environmental protection, signing the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act into law in 2021 and committing the state to 100% renewable energy by 2050.
“Illinois is setting the most rigorous standards for carbon capture in the nation,” said Leader Bill Cunningham (D-Chicago). “Taking advantage of this technology will help mitigate the damage to our environment and support industries in Illinois while ensuring the health of our communities and resources.”
“This bill establishes a significant regulatory framework for any carbon capture and sequestration projects located here and further solidifies Illinois as a national leader in clean energy policy,” said Rep. Ann Williams (D-Chicago). “As we continue working to reach our decarbonization goals and transition away from fossil fuels, we need to consider all options for mitigating climate damage while protecting our air, water and land and keeping communities safe.”
“This law smartly and safely advances carbon capture and storage in Illinois, which will help increase economic development, advance our clean energy goals and create new jobs. It will also allow us to unlock important new technology, such as sustainable aviation fuel, which is key to a greener transportation sector,” said Mark Denzler, President & CEO of the Illinois Manufacturers’ Association. “We thank Governor Pritzker for his leadership on this issue, and extend our appreciation to Deputy Governor for Public Safety, Infrastructure, Environment, and Energy Bria Scudder, Senate President Pro Tempore Bill Cunningham, House Assistant Majority Leader Jay Hoffman, and partners in agriculture and labor for their work in shaping this agreement. This is proof that by working together, we can decarbonize our environment without deindustrializing our economy.”
“We applaud Governor Pritzker for signing the Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) protections bill into law and

For parents, knowing when and how to talk to children about a loved one’s diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or dementia can be challenging. To help navigate these conversations, the Alzheimer’s Association offers tips and resources on how to talk to children about Alzheimer’s and dementia, including: 1. Be open and honest. When a friend or family member has Alzheimer’s, children may feel upset, confused, or scared. It’s crucial to be honest and clear with them about what’s happening. If possible, include the person diagnosed in these conversations. This inclusion can help demystify the disease and foster a sense of involvement and understanding.
2. Learn about the disease. Educating children and teens about Alzheimer’s and dementia can help them understand what to expect and how to connect with the person they care about. The Alzheimer’s Association offers a Parent’s Guide: Helping Children and Teens Understand Alzheimer’s Disease (https:// bit.ly/3YkDV4e), which includes commonly asked questions and sample answers. This resource can be an excellent starting point for parents and caregivers to address the concerns of young people thoughtfully and accurately.
3. Activities for connection: Spending time with a family member or friend with Alzheimer’s can be meaningful and enjoyable. Take your cue from the person with Alzheimer’s—What do they like to do? What are they able to do? What are they in the mood for today? The Alzheimer’s Association offers a list of activity ideas (https://bit.ly/3YkZ7Hg) that can help maintain a bond and create positive experiences. These activities can range from simple games to reminiscing about old photos, providing a way to stay connected and engaged.

are grateful for his Office’s work this spring to achieve strong environmental protection in this bill,” said Christine Nannicelli on behalf of the Illinois Clean Jobs Coalition. “The safeguards secured in SB1289 are urgently needed – multi-
ple corporations are currently targeting Illinois for carbon waste disposal, and this law takes critical steps toward ensuring Illinois communities and our land and water are protected from the risks associated with CCS.”
4. Resources are available: The Alzheimer’s Association Kids and Teens (https://www.alz.org/ help-support/resources/kids-teens)section provides valuable information to help young people learn more about Alzheimer’s disease and how it affects the people they love. This section includes book selections, helpful resource links, and videos tailored to younger audiences. These resources can provide comfort and understanding, making the disease less intimidating.
Approximately one-quarter of the more than 11 million dementia caregivers are “sandwich generation” caregivers—those who care not only for an aging parent but also for children under age 18. This dual responsibility can be particularly taxing, making it even more critical to have open lines of communication within the family. By addressing the needs and questions of children and teens, caregivers can create a supportive environment that acknowledges everyone’s emotions and fosters resilience.
Alzheimer’s disease affects the entire family, and it’s essential to include children and teens in the conversation. By being open, honest, and informed, and by engaging in meaningful activities, families can navigate the challenges of Alzheimer’s together. The Alzheimer’s Association offers a wealth of resources to support families through this journey, ensuring that no one has to face it alone.

Surge Angels Program Awards $100,000 to Three Ventures Founded by Education Leaders of Color
CHICAGO, PRNewswire -- Surge Institute, a trailblazing organization that empowers leaders of color in education, recently awarded $100,000 in funding through its Surge Angels program to three early-stage ventures run by Black, Latinx, Asian and Pacific Islander education leaders. The awards were determined and announced on Friday, June 28, in Chicago during a special Pitch Night event, culminating in the intensive six-month Surge Angels entrepreneurial development program.
This year’s event celebrated the hard work, dedication and visions of 10 Surge Institute Alumni, culminating in a grand showcase where three founders were honored with substantial prize money. The event started with an introduction from Tiara Wheatley, Surge Institute’s Vice President of Alumni Impact. Chief External Affairs Officer Will Collins welcomed guests, founders and investors who were there in person and watching via livestream.
Overall Placement:
1st Place, with an award of $50,000: Marcus Wilson (DC22), Founder & CEO of The Village Network
2nd Place, with an award of $30,000: Cescily Phillips (KC20), Founder & Executive Director of Inspired Aesthetics
3rd Place, with an award of $20,000: Naomi Fierro Peña (OAK22), Founder & CEO of That Art Party
The Surge Angels program is designed to support the entrepreneurial aspirations of Surge Alumni, providing them with the resources, mentorship and capital necessary to bring their innovative ideas to life. Participants received intensive training in business fundamentals, strategic planning, financial management and marketing, preparing them to secure funding and incubate their innovative entrepreneurial ventures grounded in service to their communities. Additionally, each participant was paired with an executive coach experienced in entrepreneurship, ensuring tailored guidance and support.
The program culminates in Pitch Night, where each participant can present their venture plans to Angel investors in hopes of securing funding. On June 28, after considering pitches from the 10 founders in this year’s Surge Angels cohort, the panel of Angel investors funded the growth and development of the top three ventures.
The Village Network, based in Washington, D.C., is a collection of programming initiatives supporting youth and educational leaders’ diverse needs and interests. The organization believes in the inherent power of community and seeks to empower its communities through relationship, resource and capacity building. Wilson said he was overcome with emotion when he heard his name called and added that he must pour into Black and Brown youth the way people poured into him.
“I’ve been so fortunate throughout my life to be surrounded by genuine love, whether it’s family, friends, teachers, mentors or co-workers,” said Wilson, who went full-time with his venture in May. “The Surge Angels fellowship has allowed me to think about a business plan, a budget, marketing—all of these different things that will help not only the programming aspect but the administrative side of running an organization.”
Inspired Aesthetics envisions a community where young Black and Brown people who want to learn more about art, cooking or engineering have places within reach to do so—and can learn from people who look like them.
That Art Party combines Fierro Peña’s love of art and play with her professional skills to curate artistic experiences for BIPOC adults to nourish their inner child and play as a tool for liberation.
Other ventures in this cohort included youth wellness
solutions, a residential fellowship for Black high school students experiencing homelessness, a youth STEM education program and a program that increases the visibility of Black girls excelling in math.
“This year’s cohort of founders represents the brilliance that is our growing and dynamic Surge Alumni Community,” said Wheatley, also a 2020 Surge Chicago alumna herself. “These leaders are transforming lives, communities and schools for students nationwide. We are extremely proud of all of our founders and the work they’ve done to chase and accomplish their Freedom Dreams.”
The Surge Angels funding prizes will give the winning founders the capital needed to move their ventures toward more impactful implementation or growth. Surge Institute believes that by investing in these leaders, is not only supporting individual entrepreneurial journeys but also contributing to a broader movement of educational equity and excellence.
“Surge was always designed to support and elevate brilliant and bold leaders with big dreams to transform education,” said Surge Institute Founder and CEO Carmita Semaan. “The Surge Angels program is our opportunity and honor to continue that work with our alumni and invest directly into their visions. I am so inspired by what all 10 of these founders presented, and I am confident they will all take their work to the next level.”
Surge Institute is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that was established with a simple but important mission: To develop and elevate leaders of color who create transformative change for children, families and communities. Founded by Carmita Semaan in 2014, the organization was designed to empower emerging diverse leaders to change the landscape of education by providing them with a unique, authentic leadership development experience.

Created in 2020, the Jordan Black Community Commitment — a joint and equal 10-year, $100 million initiative of Michael Jordan and Jordan Brand — is focused on leading sustainable change to impact the fight against systemic racism and create more equitable futures for Black Americans.
Aligned across the BCC’s four key pillars (education, economic justice, narrative change and social justice), the most recent grants were distributed to 14 nonprofit institutional grantees and 23 grassroots organizations across the country leading solutions in their cities through the open-call Community Grants Program, which is inspired by the power of local decisions to create systemic change.
“The Jordan Brand has a unique and distinct role to play in continuing to elevate Black culture and Black communities,” says Sarah Mensah, Jordan Brand President. “It’s why we are so committed to partnering closely with organizations who are boldly and intentionally leading the change to create a more equitable future for Black Americans. We are privileged to support these organizations in their inspiring work.”
In order to be eligible for a one-year grant through the Community Grants Program, grassroots 501(c)(3) organizations must have an operating budget of less than $3 million and share a tie to one of the BCC’s four key pillars. Jordan Community Grants were first awarded in 2021, and the latest group of organizations make up the fourth cohort of the program.

BET MUSIC NAMES RISING COUNTRY SENSATION TANNER ADELL AS THE ‘BET AMPLIFIED’ PRESENTED BY NISSAN ARTIST FOR JULY
(Black PR Wire) New York, NY – BET Music and Nissan are teaming up to shine a spotlight on rising Black stars in the music world, and they’re kicking things off with none other than the dynamic Cali-bred Country sensation, Tanner Adell. Fresh off of an electrifying debut performance on Nissan’s BET Amplified stage during Culture’s Biggest Night, BET Awards 2024, Tanner Adell also takes the BET Amplified Artist of the Month crown this July, bringing her fresh, unapologetic take on Country music to the forefront.
Tanner Adell burst onto the scene last year with her debut mixtape Buckle Bunny, earning major props from The New York Times, NPR, Billboard, MusicRow, and more. With hits like “I Hate Texas,” where she spills the tea on a messy breakup, to viral favorites like “Buckle Bunny,” Tanner’s got a knack for mixing raw honesty with infectious beats. Her unique sound is set to take her straight to stardom, and BET and Nissan are here for it.
Tanner’s roots are as diverse as her sound. From summers in Wyoming learning to drive four-wheelers and cars at a young age, to belting out Phantom of the Opera, her childhood was a blend of wild freedom and deep musical passion. And, Tanner’s humble beginnings have cultivated an artist whose musical prowess has taken her from the country all the way to Cowboy Carter, receiving the ultimate cosign singing on Beyonce’s blockbuster album of 2024.
BET Socials, and BET’s Official YouTube Page. Previous BET Amplified artists include 41, Ambré, Armani White, Asake, Big Boss Vette, BossMan Dlow, Coco Jones, Connie Diiamond, Fridayy, HDBeenDope, Kaliii, Lady London, Lakeyah, Larry June, Lola Brooke, Maiya The Don, October London, Skilla Baby, That Mexican OT and more!
Tanner Adell can now add BET Amplified Artists to her list of accolades. And, what better way to celebrate than performing on the BET Amplified stage on Culture’s biggest night, BET Awards 2024? Recently signed to Atlanta-based label LVRN, Tanner Adell is poised to continue taking her country roots outside the walls of Nashville and onto the world stage.
As a BET Amplified artist, Tanner Adell will receive BET Music’s support across multiple BET campaigns and platforms, including BET, BET Her, BET Jams, BET Soul, BET.com,
Tanner Adell is here to unapologetically pave her own lane in Country music. Brought up between the coast of Manhattan Beach, California and the rustic charm of Star Valley, Wyoming, the songstress lived a free-spirited childhood in the country, complete with cowboy boots and rodeos. Weaving the tales of her upbringing through her musical storytelling, Tanner’s lyricism keeps its roots in Country while infusing an addictive blend of pop vocals and hip-hop beats. Tanner spills out energetic tunes and honest ballads that draw upon her personal narrative as a biracial woman embracing the truest version of herself. Hear Tanner reclaim the power back for the girls with her July 2023 debut mixtape, Buckle Bunny, a first-ofits-kind in the Country genre, which earned praise from The New York Times, NPR, Billboard, MusicRow and more. As fans continue to discover and rave over Tanner’s unique style through her Buckle Bunny mixtape, she continues to have a huge 2024 of new music and touring while she graces the stage at some of the biggest domestic and international festivals including Faster Horses and Golden Sky, already checking off C2C, Stagecoach and Hangout Festival. Tanner continues to keep fans on the edge of their seat, pushing the genre boundaries yet again in the forthcoming pop-infused get-over-you anthem, “Whiskey Blues,” Twisters soundtrack feature “Too Easy,” and summer bop “Cowboy Break My Heart,” out now. She made her TV performance debut on the Jennifer Hudson Show earlier this year and most recently performed on the 2024 BET Awards. The rising star promises to keep reimagining music with unbridled innovation while making her mark on Music City and beyond.

MONEY
6 Scams Every Older American Should Know About
(StatePoint) Amid technology advances enabling scammers to commit fraud, elders and their loved ones need to stay informed. Typically, elder scams involve the transfer of money to a stranger or imposter for a promised benefit or good. In 2023, banks reported more than $27 billion in suspicious activity related to elder scams, according to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, and reports filed by the public to the Federal Bureau of Investigation indicated an average loss of more than $33,000 per case. And these numbers may be conservative, as elder fraud cases may be underreported. One technology behind these staggering figures is artificial intelligence (AI). Advanced methods of masking one’s identity using AI make it difficult to detect fakes. Voice print – or voice clone – scamming is becoming more of an issue when it comes to impersonation fraud. Using voice clips from social media or by calling and having a brief conversation with someone, criminals can generate an imitation to be used as part of their ruse. “Older adults are often easier prey for these types of fakes, because a recognized voice when applied to certain scam strategies is often enough to elicit action,” says Mark Kwapiszeski, head of Enterprise Fraud at PNC.
Two Scam Strategies to Watch For
Most scams targeting elders generally follow one or two main strategies: 1) elicit strong feelings and apply a sense of urgency to get someone to act quickly before thinking, and/or 2) entice someone with an offer that seems too good to be true, yet too alluring to pass up. Here are some of the more common types of elder scams:
Scams That Apply a Sense of Urgency:
• Tech Support. Someone will claim they need to remotely access the victim’s computer to fix a software problem, then use that access to steal personal or financial information.
• Government Imposter. The fraudster may tell the victim they owe a debt that must be paid immediately or face arrest, asset seizure or termination of benefits.
• Grandparent. An elaborate story is given by phone and sometimes involves a voice print of an actual grandchild, claiming a loved one is in trouble and needs money to be protected.
Scams That Offer Something Too Good to Be True:
• Investment. The scammer makes claims of a high-return investment to trick the victim into giving them money, often asking to be paid in an unconventional way, like cryptocurrency, where there’s little to no chance of recovering the funds.
• Romance. The scammer develops a fake identity and creates the illusion of a romantic relationship to manipulate or steal from the victim.
• Lottery/Sweepstakes. Scammers make contact by phone or mail to tell the victim they’ve won the lottery or a sweepstakes but claim the elder has to remit a processing fee before they can get their prize.
Take Protective Measures and Stay Alert The most effective way of preventing fraud is to pause when being rushed and take time to verify the legitimacy of both the person making contact and their claims. To reduce the odds of your voice being cloned, experts suggest exercising caution when speaking on the phone with strangers. If someone unfamiliar contacts you, disconnect from the original communication channel, verify their identity, then attempt to make contact through a different channel. For instance, hang up the phone, get a number for the company, government agency or family member from a trusted source (such as a company’s official website) and use that to call back and verify. When it comes to scammers that establish a relationship over time, verify legitimacy using third-party resources before investing. Be leery of anyone asking for nontraditional payment forms, and when logic may be clouded by romantic feelings, confide in someone you trust for an objective opinion. If you believe you or someone you love has been a victim of fraud, contact the Department of Justice Office for Victims of Crime’s National Elder Fraud Hotline website or call 1-833FRAUD11.
(StatePoint) College-related costs are at an all-time high, and while many parents harbor concerns about the expense, they value the education their child is receiving.
That’s according to the April 2024 College Ave survey. The survey found that while 89% of parents of four-year college students believe a college degree is important for their child’s future, 78% agree that paying for college is stressful.
“Families today are relying on a mix of sources to fund college, including scholarships, federal aid and grants, income and savings, and in some
cases, private student loans,” says Angela Colatriano, chief marketing officer, College Ave.
According to Colatriano, it’s critical to understand the ins and outs of borrowing for college before taking out a loan. If you believe your family will take this path, here’s everything you need to know:
1. Exhaust other options. Many experts agree that private loans only make sense once other financial aid options are exhausted. After filing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), you’ll receive a financial aid package from each school,
which may include scholarships, grants and federal student loans. If your selected school is one of the 400 institutions that requires the CSS profile, submit that application, too to qualify for institutional aid. And of course, don’t forget to apply to private scholarships to access funds that don’t need to be repaid.
2. Do the math. Federal student loans in the student’s name offer unique benefits, so if you do need to borrow, start there. If you decide that a private student loan or private parent loan is also right for your family, borrow only the minimum amount needed to save over the life of the loan. This is a good time to explore additional avenues for reducing your financing needs, such as renting textbooks, and buying groceries versus paying into the school meal plan.
3. Understand loan costs. Unlike federal loans, which have fixed interest rates for all borrowers, private student loans offer a choice of fixed or variable interest rates. Shop around for a lender that doesn’t charge origination fees, and learn the difference between fixed and variable interest rates. Use CollegeAve.com’s student loan calculator to get a sense of the overall cost of a given loan and its monthly loan payments.
4. Compare lender repayment options. Another factor to consider when shopping for a lender is repayment terms. Some lenders, like College Ave, let borrowers choose how long they want to repay their loan, and whether to start making payments immediately or defer until after graduation. The important thing is to select a loan with budget-friendly terms and a monthly payment you can live with.
5. Apply with a cosigner. Private student loan lenders look at income and credit history to determine a student’s ability to repay the loan. If approved, their credit history also impacts the interest rate they’re offered. Many college students don’t have an established credit history or sufficient income and may not get approved for a private loan on their own. Your student can improve their chances of getting approved and securing a lower interest rate by adding a cosigner to their loan application. The cosigner should understand that they share equal responsibility for repayment if the student falls behind on payments.
Bottom line? Researching financial aid options, applying for scholarships and being a strategic borrower can help your family get on with what matters most: preparing for a bright future.
