GYRLS IN THE H.O.O.D FOUNDATION HOSTS INAUGURAL LET IT FLOW FESTIVAL TO COMBAT PERIOD POVERTY

Chicago, Ill. -– Gyrls In The H.O.O.D Foundation is thrilled to announce the inaugural “Let It Flow Festival”, an empowering event aimed at raising awareness about period poverty, normalizing conversations around menstruation, and providing essential menstrual products to girls in need. The festival will take place from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 31, at 605 E. 71st.

The “Let It Flow Festival” will feature interactive booths, hands-on workshops, live entertainment, and a special “Ask the Doctor” session where attendees can get expert advice on menstrual health. Attendees will also have the opportunity to receive free menstrual products and engage with community healthcare providers.

“We believe that no girl should have to miss out on school, work, or life events because of her period. Everyone is invited to come, experience and celebrate our West African roots and culture with entertainment by West Side musicians, dancers, artists, shops with unique crafts, and fine food from local vendors at the 4th annual Ghan-Again Festival, in the Austin neighborhood. The festival will take place on Saturday, September 14th from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Austin Town Hall Park, 5610 W. Lake St.

The festival is named “Ghan-Again,” in honor of CAYTA (Chicago Austin Youth Travel Adventures), the non-profit arm of Gone Again Travel & Tours. This is the only Black-owned brick and mortar travel agency in Chicago, located in the Austin neighborhood and founded by long time Austin resident Crystal Dyer. The event opens at 10 a.m. with craft vendors offering wares at Austin Town Hall.

This festival is a key part of our annual fundraising efforts to provide these transformative experiences for young people.

CAYTA, a nonprofit promoting local youth travel, takes young people to Ghana in early June yearly. Chicago Avenue travel agent Crystal Dyer, who traces part of her lineage to the West African country, organized the nonprofit to give youth some alternative visions after her grandson was killed in street violence in 2011.

CAYTA’s mission is to tackle the epidemic of violence in our community by using our expertise in world travel to expand and enrich the minds and self-esteem of our at-risk-youth.

Local Students Receive Job Training Skills

Two local young people, David Allen and Dejiah Beatty, are participants in the program. Allen, a student at North Carolina Agricultural & Technology, is working as a Digital Ambassador at the River North branch. Beatty, a student at University of Michigan, is working as a Digital Ambassador at Bank of America’s Hyde Park branch.

Urban Alliance has been around since 1996 and has connected 6,000 young people to paid internships and trained 21,000 young people in workforce skills in Chicago, Baltimore, Detroit and the Washington, DC area.

Prior to their work at Bank of America, Allen and Beatty participated in a three-week training program. They took compliance training and simulations of lobby interactions with clients. The students also have a workplace mentor who gives them immediate support at Bank of America.

Allen is studying criminal justice at North Carolina A&T. Urban Alliance has been helping him with his college and career goals, including scholarship assistance. Allen’s experience at Bank of America has given him access to careers within financial institutions.

“Bank of America has opened my eyes to corporate security and the banking world, with careers in security, including security analysts … Bank of America has also opened my eyes to doing corporate side law to make sure the networks are safe,” he said.

Allen is grateful for the connections he has made through Urban Alliance and during his time at Bank of America with his paid internship.

Allen wanted to participate in the program because of the opportunity to gain skills that would help him in the future. He has been able to learn about the real world applications of the skills he is learning through the program. As a Digital Ambassador, he is assisting customers who come into the financial center with mobile banking before they go to a relationship banker.

“It’s been a great experience, I’ve really been enjoying my time here. The team that I work with is amazing,” Allen said. Allen added that the team has been able to answer every question he has. He likes being the first face customers see when they walk into the bank. The staff and the customers

Beatty wanted to participate in the program so that she could tap into her minor, which is business administration. Her work during her internship includes helping the clients check-in and helping them navigate the mobile apps for immediate support and solutions, while helping them decrease their wait time while they are in the bank lobby.

As an alumni of the Urban Alliance program, Beatty has access to summer internships and engagements that the program has to offer. Beatty is studying to be a cardiac surgeon, with hopes of opening her own clinic.

“One thing that I’ve learned as I began navigating my personal journey and my career journey, is that personal health and personal finance are two of the most crucial aspects in every person’s life and they’re not always the easiest to talk about. I’m happy to be gaining the fluency of both of those skills,” Beatty said.

Secretary of State’s Teen Summer DMV Program Ending August 24

Eligible Teens to Visit a Teen DMV Before Program Ends

Teen drivers have just four more Saturdays to take advantage of the Secretary of State’s Teen Summer DMV program, Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias announced today.

Giannoulias announced in June that for the first time ever, his office would dedicate DMV services exclusively for teen drivers every Saturday at select facilities throughout the state. More than 50,000 Illinois teens received their first driver’s license during the months of June and July.

Now, with just a couple Saturdays left to access exclusive teen hours, Giannoulias is encouraging any eligible teens to make an appointment before they go back to school.

Join us for the world’s largest fundraiser to fight Alzheimer’s and all other dementias.

“We have seen this summer the success of these teen-only DMVs that provide a convenient DMV option for working parents who can’t take time off work during the week or for teens who have summer sports and activities,” Giannoulias said. “As we near the end of our program this summer, I want to make sure that our eligible teens can get their license before school starts and their schedules and their parent’s schedules get even busier.”

The Teen Summer DMV initiative, which included opening 12 additional DMVs on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. ends Aug. 24.

The hours cater exclusively to helping teens get their driver’s licenses or permits quickly and conveniently. The effort is part of Giannoulias’ modernization plan to create efficiencies and reduce wait times.

The DMV facilities were chosen based on data revealing the highest percentage of teen drivers and the state’s busiest facilities. In addition to the Teen Summer DMVs, 15 other DMVs operate on Saturdays, including two of the largest facilities in the state located on the North and South sides of Chicago. Teens are welcome to make appointments at those facilities on Saturdays as well.

Teen drivers interested in obtaining their first license will be scheduled for 10-minute appointments if they have already completed the required behind-the-wheel driving tests through their high school or commercial driving facility. If they need to complete a driving test at a DMV, they will be scheduled for a 30-minute appointment. Teens who need driving permits can also schedule an appointment to take a written test.

Any unfilled appointments during teen service hours will become available to the general public at 7 a.m.

“This is a pivotal moment in the fight against Alzheimer’s. There are now treatments that change the course of the disease,” said, Mary DeMars, Alzheimer’s Association Walk Director “We hope that everyone in our community can join us by starting a team to help the Alzheimer’s Association raise awareness and funds for families facing the disease today, take more steps toward treatments and finally ending this disease.”

During teen service hours, the office has a selfie station for newly licensed drivers and provides important information on data protection, such as making sure the driver’s license number and address are covered when posting to social media.

State law requires teen drivers and a parent or guardian to visit a DMV in person to complete testing and identity verification prior to receiving their first driver’s license. Illinois DMVs experience an influx of customers during the summer months, especially among teen drivers who make the switch from an instruction permit to a driver’s license.

Parents and teens can call (800) 252-8980 to schedule an appointment at any of the 12 DMV locations.

During teen service hours, information will be provided geared toward new drivers, including details about the restrictions related to a graduated driver’s license (the license for those under 18 years of age), the dangers of distracted driving and how to become an organ donor.

Along with a big smile for their driver’s license photos, new drivers will need to bring the following to the DMV:

• Their logbook for their instructional permit.

• Their blue and white road test waiver form from their high school if they have one. • Their birth certificate.

• Their physical Social Security Card.

• Two proofs of address forms, such as school transcripts or their parent’s driver’s license or ID card.

While teen drivers are not required to hold a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license, they are encouraged to apply for one during these designated teen hours. A list of REAL ID requirements is available at realid. ilsos.gov.

6 Scams Every Older American Should Know About

(StatePoint) Amid technology advances enabling scammers to commit fraud, elders and their loved ones need to stay informed. Typically, elder scams involve the transfer of money to a stranger or imposter for a promised benefit or good. In 2023, banks reported more than $27 billion in suspicious activity related to elder scams, according to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, and reports filed by the public to the Federal Bureau of Investigation indi-

cated an average loss of more than $33,000 per case. And these numbers may be conservative, as elder fraud cases may be underreported.

One technology behind these staggering figures is artificial intelligence (AI). Advanced methods of masking one’s identity using AI make it difficult to detect fakes. Voice print – or voice clone – scamming is becoming more of an issue when it comes to impersonation fraud. Using voice clips from social media or by calling and having a brief conversation with someone, criminals can generate an imitation to be used as part of their ruse. “Older adults are often easier prey for these types of fakes, because a recognized voice when applied to certain scam strategies is often enough to elicit action,” says Mark Kwapiszeski, head of Enterprise Fraud at PNC.

Two Scam Strategies to Watch For

Most scams targeting elders generally follow one or two main strategies: 1) elicit strong feelings and apply a sense of urgency to get someone to act quickly before thinking, and/or 2) entice someone with an offer that seems too good to be true, yet too alluring to pass up. Here are some of the more common types of elder scams:

Scams That Apply a Sense of Urgency:

• Tech Support. Someone will claim they need to remotely access the victim’s computer to fix a software problem, then use that access to steal personal or financial information.

• Government Imposter. The fraudster may tell the victim they owe a debt that must be paid immediately or face arrest, asset seizure or termination of benefits.

• Grandparent. An elaborate story is given by phone and sometimes involves a voice print of an actual grandchild, claiming a loved one is in trouble and needs money to be protected.

Scams That Offer Something Too Good to Be True:

• Investment. The scammer makes claims of a high-return investment to trick the victim into giving them money, often asking to be paid in an unconventional way, like cryptocurrency, where there’s little to no chance of recovering the funds.

• Romance. The scammer develops a fake identity and creates the illusion of a romantic relationship to manipulate or steal from the victim.

• Lottery/Sweepstakes. Scammers make contact by phone or mail to tell the victim they’ve won the lottery or a sweepstakes but claim the elder has to remit a processing fee before they can get their prize.

Take Protective Measures and Stay Alert

The most effective way of preventing fraud is to pause when being rushed and take time to verify the legitimacy of both the person making contact and their claims. To reduce the odds of your voice being cloned, experts suggest exercising caution when speaking on the phone with strangers. If someone unfamiliar contacts you, disconnect from the original communication channel, verify their identity, then attempt to make contact through a different channel. For instance, hang up the phone, get a number for the company, government agency or family member from a trusted source (such as a company’s official website) and use that to call back and verify.

When it comes to scammers that establish a relationship over time, verify legitimacy using third-party resources before investing. Be leery of anyone asking for nontraditional payment forms, and when logic may be clouded by romantic feelings, confide in someone you trust for an objective opinion.
