COOK COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS PASSES COMMISSIONER MILLER’S RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING SEPTEMBER AS BLOOD CANCER AND SICKLE CELL AWARENESS MONTH
Sickle Cell is the most common inherited blood disorder in the US, disproportionately affecting people of color Cook County, Ill. -- The Cook County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved Cook County Commissioner Donna Miller’s resolution to recognize September as Blood Cancer and Sickle Cell Awareness Month in Cook County. The resolution is part of a national effort to raise awareness of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) and blood cancers, which are the third leading cause of cancer death in the U.S., and to reinforce continued research and education efforts, including the Cure Sickle Cell Initiative. Ahead of the vote on the resolution, the Board heard public testimony from Cook County residents impacted by the diseases. SCD is the most common inherited blood disorder in the United States. It causes red blood cells to become sickle-shaped and harden, and leads to complications including chronic severe and unpredictable pain, anemia, frequent infections, swelling in extremities, fatigue, delayed growth and more. Sickle cell disease is not contagious, and there is no universal cure. However, doctors have found a new genetic treatment that cured hallmark symptoms of SCD in 88% of people, and is starting to be used outside the clinical trial setting. Previously, the only options for people with sickle cell were treatments to manage symptoms or donor stem cell transplants that carry serious risks.
Throughout her time in office, Commissioner Miller has made it a priority to use her background in the healthcare industry to advocate for efforts to reduce health care disparities, with additional focuses on cardiovascular disease and maternal mortality rates. As Commissioner, she has sponsored resolutions to draw attention to American Heart Month, National Minority Health Month and Black Maternal Health Week, and convened important hearings to examine morbidity and mortality rates in Cook County. Additionally, each year Commissioner Miller sponsors blood drives to get more people to give blood, specifically conducting outreach to the County’s Black community. Sickle cell patients benefit most from blood transfusions from people of the same race or similar ethnicity, but only 5% of blood donors currently are of African ancestry.
MANLEY CELEBRATES JOLIET PUBLIC SCHOOLS’ HUFFORD GROUNDBREAKING ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Illinois State Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, celebrated Joliet Public Schools’ new Hufford Junior High School at a groundbreaking ceremony. The Hufford groundbreaking was accompanied by another ceremony celebrating the groundbreaking of Gompers Junior High School that same day.
“The public voted overwhelmingly in a referendum that the two schools, over 66 years old, should be replaced. The average citizen recognizes the value of having great educational institutions,” said Manley. “District 86 is making good on their decision by starting construction on two state-of-the-art educational facilities for Joliet’s growing community.”
According to Joliet Public Schools D86, “the new 171,000-square-foot Hufford Junior High School will be built off Ingalls Avenue west of Larkin Avenue. The new school will be approximately 33% larger than the current Hufford Junior High. Gompers Junior High School will be a 142,700-square-foot facility roughly the same size as the current school.”
“I would like to thank Superintendent Dr. Theresa Rouse, the referendum committee, and the school board for their initiative in seeing that the result of that referendum becomes a reality,” said Manley. “These schools will serve as valuable investments for generations to come.”
‘227’ Creator Talks About The Inspiration Behind The TV Show
Continued from page 1
BY TIA CAROL JONES
She decided to enroll at Kennedy-King College because she heard the college had a great reputation for its theatre program. Houston had dreams of becoming an actress and upon enrolling in Kennedy-King, she tried out for the first play of the season and landed the lead role.
“I said, Oh Lord have mercy, I picked the right thing, God has blessed me, I’m going to Hollywood. Little did I know that I was really going to go to Hollywood, but I wasn’t going to be on stage, and I wasn’t going to be acting,” Houston said.
Houston talked about her journey writing plays as a student at Kennedy-King College to writing television scripts in Hollywood during a meet and greet at Kennedy-King College on Wednesday, Sept. 25th. The event was part of programming that includes an exhibit, which features memorabilia from the shows Houston worked on. It was the second time Kennedy-King opened the exhibit, the first time was November 2023. Since then, more memorabilia was added.
successful in writing, to write what you know. Houston decided to write the play about her childhood and growing up with her best friend at 227 E. 48th Street. As she wrote the play, she included other characters who lived in the apartment building. She remembered her friend’s mother who was funny and who talked about everybody in the building and in the neighborhood. She started to write about her friend’s mother.
“I found out that in order to be a good writer, you have to be a good storyteller. So, I started writing telling the story about me and my girlfriend growing up at 227 E. 48th Street and how funny her mother was,” Houston said.
Alisa McLaughlin, Executive Director, Center of Equity for Creative Arts at Kennedy-King College, called Houston an excellent person within the creative arts.
“Her impact is global. So, this intimate setting is really special for us at Kennedy-King College to honor you as an alumna and also just to have you here,” McLaughlin said.
Houston said you never know what’s in store for you until you take one step forward and go out there and see. She said God gave her a talent for writing that she didn’t know she had, until she was asked to write a play while at Kennedy-King. She agreed to write the play, but didn’t think it would win the contest it was being entered into, because she had never written a play before.
It was a professor that told Houston in order to be
Houston let the school enter the play into a playwrighting contest and it won. Then, they entered the play into a national contest. She was surprised that the head of the department at Kennedy-King College could relate to the story about all Black characters. It was entered into the Norman Lear Playwrighting Award and won. The prize was to write a segment for one of the six shows Lear had on television. She chose the Jeffersons and the segment was televised. Because Houston wrote for television, she became a member of the Writers Guild. It enabled her to write for television. Houston would go on to also write for “Punky Brewster.” She said she is working on the sequel to “227,” which details her family’s move from Bronzeville to the Park Manor neighborhood.
Houston also taught writing and media arts at Chicago State University. One piece of advice she gave the audience was to keep the creative control of whatever they write. The script for the play was changed once it became a television show, changing the location from Chicago to Washington, DC, the time period from the 1950s to the 1980s and the name “Two Twenty Seven” was changed to “227.”
The “227” exhibit is on display at the Kennedy-King College library, located at 6401 W. Halsted until Dec. 7th. For more information about Kennedy-King College, visit www.ccc.edu/kennedy/home.

MAYOR BRANDON JOHNSON ANNOUNCES REQUEST
CHICAGO — Today, Mayor Brandon Johnson announced that a Request for Information (RFI) has been issued to gather recommendations on reliable and efficient forms of first responder technology to ensure immediate attention from first responders in emergency situations. The City of Chicago, as previously announced in February 2024, decommissioned the use of acoustic gunshot detection technology from SoundThinking, Inc. on Sunday, Sept. 22.
RFI submissions are encouraged from qualified vendors with extensive experience in first responder response technology.
“The ultimate goal is to deploy resources on the most effective strategies and tactics proven to accelerate
the current downward trend in violent crime. We have to explore better options that save more lives,” said Mayor Brandon Johnson. “Through this RFI process, the City of Chicago will be able to aggressively look at equitable alternatives to help first responders acquire the absolute best community safety resources to aid them in reaching and responding to emergency scenes.”
the only big city to move away from this form of technology. We have been in communications with Seattle, Houston, San Antonio, and Portland – cities that have explored other options for technology – to discuss the strategies they are employing as alternatives.”
The working group is exploring options such as:
Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI)
Mild cognitive impairment causes cognitive changes that are serious enough to be noticed by the person affected and by family members and friends but do not affect the individual’s ability to carry out everyday activities.
MCI can develop for multiple reasons, and individuals living with MCI may go on to develop dementia; others will not. For neurodegenerative diseases, MCI can be an early stage of the disease continuum including for Alzheimer’s if the hallmark changes in the brain are present.
In preparation for today’s decommission of the SoundThinking, Inc. contract, the Mayor’s Office of Community Safety launched a working group that has led monthslong efforts in addressing concerns and developing alternative options to continue increasing safety for Chicago residents and communities. Participants in the initial meetings of the working group include a diverse group of City and non-City employees who have worked directly with the current technology, are deeply involved in communities impacted by violence and have extensive experience in law enforcement, violence interruption and prevention.
“This working group has been and will continue to gather feedback from a wide variety of stakeholders and community leaders to assess tools and programs that effectively increase both safety and trust,” said Deputy Mayor of Community Safety Garien Gatewood. “Chicago is not the first or
Investing in victim prevention and victim assistance programs in schools and hospitals
Improving the monitoring capabilities and response times of first responders
Investing in first responder personnel to work with communities to help resolve crimes
Increasing funding for street-level outreach programs and hiring violence interrupters
“This Request for Information will allow the city to receive the most innovative ideas that will help us continuing moving in the right direction with community safety and provide more options for violence prevention resources,” said Chief Procurement Officer Sharla Roberts.
The City of Chicago is committed to building a safer city for all through this RFI process. Please visit the City’s iSupplier portal to view and respond to the solicitation. Please note that vendor registration is required to engage the iSupplier eProcurement system.
In some individuals, MCI reverts to normal cognition or remains stable. In other cases, such as when a medication causes cognitive impairment, MCI is mistakenly diagnosed. It is important that people experiencing cognitive changes seek help as soon as possible for diagnosis and possible treatment.
Symptoms
Experts classify mild cognitive impairment based on the thinking skills affected:
• Amnestic MCI: MCI that primarily affects memory. A person may start to forget important information that he or she would previously have recalled easily, such as appointments, conversations or recent events.
• Nonamnestic MCI: MCI that affects thinking skills other than memory, including the ability to make sound decisions, judge the time or sequence of steps needed to complete a complex task, or visual perception.
Diagnosis
Mild cognitive impairment is a clinical diagnosis representing a doctor’s best professional judgment about the reason for a person’s symptoms. Individuals living with MCI who have an abnormal brain positron emission tomography (PET) scan or spinal fluid test for amyloid beta protein, which is the protein in amyloid plaques (one of the two hallmarks of Alzheimer’s), are considered to have a diagnosis of MCI due to Alzheimer’s disease.
The Alzheimer’s Association partnered with the National Institute on Aging (NIA) to convene expert workgroups to update the diagnostic guidelines for MCI due to Alzheimer’s disease, suggesting that, in some cases, MCI is an early stage of Alzheimer’s or another dementia.
The guidelines recommend finding a biomarker (a measurable biological factor, such as levels of a protein, that indicates the presence or absence of a disease) for people with MCI to learn whether they have brain changes that put them at high risk of developing Alzheimer’s and other dementias.
If it can be shown that changes in the brain, cerebrospinal fluid and/or blood are caused by physiologic processes associated with Alzheimer’s, the revised guidelines recommend a diagnosis of MCI due to Alzheimer’s disease.
A medical workup for MCI includes the following core elements:
• Thorough medical history, where the physician documents current symptoms, previous illnesses and medical conditions, and any family history of significant memory problems or dementia.

Amenities include on-site laundry, 21 parking spaces and 50% of the units will be accessible to individuals with physical disabilities. Located in the Madison-Austin Corridor TIF district, the total development costs are expected to be $31.6 million, with $9.6 million in HED funds.
The second development, named Prairie District and located in Near South Side, features the complete rehabilitation of a six-story SRO building. The property, sitting at 1801 S Wabash, will contain 100 affordable rental units. Of the units, 97 will rent to individuals at 3060% of the Average Median Income (AMI). The rehabbed units will be 416 sq. ft, with improved kitchens, full bathrooms and AC. Anticipated total development costs reside at $54.9 million, with $10.9 million coming from the HED bond.
“We are so very proud of this development. Ensuring that Chicagoans have equitable access to transit exists in tandem with our mission of providing safe, healthy housing,” said Department of Housing Commissioner Lissette Castañeda. That we could provide $7.1 million in financial support for this project in addition to increasing housing options for victims of gender-based violence while ensuring affordability, just means that the diligent work of our team at DOH is paying off.”
• Assessment of independent function and daily activities, which focuses on any changes from a person’s usual level of function.
• Input from a family member or trusted friend to provide additional perspective on how function may have changed.
• Assessment of mental status using brief tests designed to evaluate memory, planning, judgment, ability to understand visual information and other key thinking skills.
• In-office neurological examination to assess the function of nerves and reflexes, movement, coordination, balance and senses.
• Evaluation of mood to detect depression; symptoms may include problems with memory or feeling “foggy.” Depression is widespread and may be especially common in older adults.
• Laboratory tests including blood tests and imaging of the brain’s structure.
If the workup doesn’t create a clear clinical picture, the doctor may recommend neuropsychological testing, which involves a series of written or computerized tests to evaluate specific thinking skills. Causes and risks
The causes of MCI are not yet completely understood. Experts believe that many cases — but not all — result from brain changes occurring in the very early stages of Alzheimer’s or other neurodegenerative diseases that cause dementia.
The risk factors most strongly linked to MCI when the underlying cause is neurodegenerative disease and not another cause are advancing age, family history of Alzheimer’s or another dementia, and conditions that raise risk for cardiovascular disease.

ATLANTA, GA – With an unwavering commitment to increasing Black homeownership and building Black wealth, the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB) will hold its 2024 Black Wealth Summit at Clark Atlanta University on November 15 and a Building Black Wealth community event the next day, November 16.

In addition, the 2024 State of Housing in Black America (SHIBA) study will provide an extensive analysis of Black homeownership and the historical barriers Blacks have faced when seeking to purchase a home. Its 11th edition, this pivotal resource will be instrumental in influ-
encing public policies and practices that will shape the homebuying environment for African Americans.
Working with the African American Mayors Association, the National Bar Association, The Church Of God In Christ, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, NAREB will host a Building Black Wealth Tour event at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church on November 16 with Senior Pastor Dr. Jamal Bryant.
Over the past year, the NAREB Building Black Wealth Tour has organized more than 100 events that provide local communities with classes, workshops, and one-on-one counseling to advise families on homebuying, investing, and careers in real estate. There is also a course on heir’s property, educating families on how to keep real estate in their families and protect their communities from gentrification.
NAREB has organized the tour to counter the inequities in American society. NAREB’s 2023 State of Housing in Black America study found that the Black-White wealth gap is so expansive that the 400 wealthiest Americans control the same amount of wealth as all 48 million Blacks living in the United States.
Dr. Rose said data shows two million mortgage-ready Black Americans don’t own homes. “These families and individuals have the credit and income to qualify for a home mortgage,” she said. “The NAREB Building Black Wealth Tour goes into communities nationwide to find these consumers, educate them, and inspire them to build wealth.”

Get Your House In Order
Don’t Second Guess Entitlement
It has been said that we should never assume, because it will make an *** of u & me. Even knowing that, nearly 70% of the people that we know have failed to plan for the one certainty of life – death. This means that at death the certainty of what will happen to your assets (bank accounts, investment accounts, real estate, motor vehicles, and personal belongings) without a plan, is very uncertain.
If you are married and believe that you are entitled to inherit 100% of the assets and benefits of your deceased spouse, you may be in for a surprise.
If your spouse had recognized children outside of your marriage or was previously married, these relationships outside of your marriage may affect the monthly benefits that you and/or your children may be entitled to receive, especially government benefits.
The earlier relationships that either you or your spouse have had can also change the percentage of your entitlement to the property that you occupy and/or currently own jointly. These are the areas of discussion that spouses or common law partners should address now with their legal counsel. As we have often heard, an ounce of prevention is worth a ton of cure. I urge you to get professional advice today to get your “HOUSE” in order, tomorrow may be too late.

MAYOR JOHNSON AWARDS MORE THAN $4M IN DCASE GRANTS TO CHICAGO NONPROFIT ARTS ORGANIZATIONS
CHICAGO—Mayor Brandon Johnson and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) today announced grants newly awarded to 185 Chicago nonprofit arts organizations as part of the City of Chicago’s 2024 CityArts Program.
Dedicated to investing in Chicago’s arts and culture sector, the longstanding CityArts Program provides general operating support to local arts organizations of all sizes and across all artistic disciplines. Grantees include arts service organizations, arts education groups, museums and heritage centers, and entities that directly present or produce performing, visual, or media arts. Grant amounts per organization range from $10,000 –$50,000, based on the organization’s average annual revenue.
“Chicago’s diverse arts and culture community is one of the reasons that we’re the greatest freakin’ city in the world,” shared Mayor Brandon Johnson. “Investing in our creative economy is essential to our city’s growth and success.”
“The annual CityArts Grant program is a core example of DCASE’s mission in action,” shared DCASE Commissioner Clinée Hedspeth. “Our arts organizations transform the landscape of Chicago through their artistry and invention, and receiving direct governmental support is a crucial part of their sustainability.”
DCASE’s annual CityArts Program continually strives toward an equitable distribution of funds across the city. This year, 48% of newly awarded CityArts
grantees are located on the South and West sides, compared to 35% in 2021. Grantees include community arts anchors such as Kehrein Center for the Arts in Austin; groups serving at the intersection of arts and justice, such as the Prison + Neighborhood Arts/Education Project; established organizations presenting cultural work such as International Latino Cultural Center of Chicago and the American Indian Center, and first-time CityArts recipients such as Hearing in Color, dedicated to sharing the music and stories of communities that have been historically excluded from musical spaces.
Ginger Leopoldo, founder of CIRCA-Pintig, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering immigrant communities through the arts, education, and service, shares, “The support of the DCASE CityArts grant is truly transformative for our organization. This generous contribution enables us to expand our reach and deepen our impact in ways we’ve only dreamed of before. The City’s recognition of our work resonates deeply, fueling our passion and commitment to our mission and keeping the rhythm of our organization strong and steady.”

The CityArts Program is partially supported through funds from the American Rescue Plan Coronavirus State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds. Through general operating support, grants are helping to stabilize and shore up organizations’ essential functions and services
provided to Chicago communities.
DCASE is committed to strengthening the capacity of Chicago’s arts and culture sector through connecting artists and arts organizations with City of Chicago grants and resources. Together, these programs provide a range of funding opportunities to bolster artists’ livelihoods as part of Chicago’s thriving arts economy and to bring enriching and impactful arts activities and services throughout Chicago’s communities.

Representation of Women and People of Color in Clinical Trials is
(StatePoint) Cardiovascular diseases and stroke remain leading causes of death worldwide. As researchers work to find new treatments that have the potential to benefit patients, they say that more diversity is needed among participants in clinical trials to advance understanding of these conditions.
“Clinical trials are a cornerstone of medical research and healthcare innovation. They are essential to advancing medical science and ensuring patient safety, and often lead to the development of effective new treatment options. However, it is crucial that they include participants from diverse backgrounds, encompassing a wide
range of lived experiences and living conditions, and representing diverse races, ethnicities, ages, genders, and sexual orientations, so that all communities can benefit from scientific advancements,” says Roxana Mehran, MD, FACC, FACP, FCCP, FESC, FAHA, MSCAI, Professor of Medicine in Cardiology and Population Health Science and Policy Professor in Cardiovascular Clinical Research and Outcomes Director of Interventional Cardiovascular Research and Clinical Trials Mount Sinai Health System.
According to research published in JAMA Network Open, women with atrial fibrillation, which is an
irregular heart rhythm, face a higher risk of complications, like stroke, compared to men. The American Heart Association reports that cardiovascular disease prevalence remains highest among non-Hispanic Black females and nonHispanic Black males. Experts believe such gaps in care are partially due to representation in clinical trials. Historically, women and people of color have been underrepresented in cardiovascular research, which has in recent decades, relied primarily on white male study participants.
One program in particular is helping to address gaps in heart disease treatment as the first clinical program to enroll nearly 50,000 patients across three trials. It’s actively recruiting women and members from diverse populations in an effort to ensure its results are inclusive, equitable and relevant for all patients.
The Librexia program is a phase 3 clinical trial investigating a potential new treatment for patients with blood clotting diseases, including acute coronary syndrome (i.e. heart attack), atrial fibrillation and prevention of repeated strokes. The program is designed to find treatment options that can potentially help improve outcomes in a wide range of patients, including underserved populations like women and people of color. To ensure that trial enrollment represents the individuals likely to take the medication, all who meet the criteria are encouraged to explore if the trials are a fit for them. A clinical trial helps advance research that may benefit family members, the community and future generations. “Diverse representation in clinical trials can help us better understand the benefits of a particular medication across all segments of the population,” says Dr. Mehran.
