NEWS briefly SLAUGHTER ENCOURAGES RESIDENTS TO FOLLOW IDPH COVID-19 MITIGATION GUIDANCE CHICAGO – To help prevent a surge in COVID-19 cases during the upcoming holiday season, state Rep. Justin Slaughter, D-Chicago, is reminding local residents to follow the Illinois Department of Public Health’s (IDPH) most recent guidelines on how to safely celebrate this holiday amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. “While we have made tremendous progress in getting people vaccinated and reducing the number of new cases, we cannot afford to lower our guard now,” said Slaughter. “I know that this has been a frustrating time for many, but we must continue to do what we can to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe. I’ll be following the recommendations of our health experts, and I encourage others to do the same.” IDPH recently released updated guidance for families and individuals to celebrate safely this holiday season during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Illinoisans are encouraged to keep gatherings small and ensure adequate ventilation indoors, while unvaccinated travelers are encouraged to get tested before and after traveling. Travelers are encouraged to use private vehicles, and masks are required when traveling on mass transit and public transit. For more information on IDPH’s COVID-19 safety guidance, please visit www. dph.illinois.gov. “Please be safe this holiday season, and consider receiving a booster shot if you qualify for it,” said Slaughter. “Vaccines are the best form of protection against this deadly virus, please make sure you’re taking advantage of what is available.” For assistance scheduling a vaccine shot, please visit www.vaccines.gov. GOV. PRITZKER SIGNS THE REIMAGINING ELECTRIC VEHICLES IN ILLINOIS ACT ROCKFORD— Building on Illinois’ role as a leading state in the burgeoning electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing industry, Governor JB Pritzker today signed the Reimagining Electric Vehicles in Illinois Act into law, incentivizing EV production across Illinois. The new incentives benefit the state’s entire EV ecosystem, by helping to build facilities, train Illinois graduates, and create thousands of jobs. This is a major step towards one of the administration’s bold benchmarks: putting one million electric vehicles on the road by 2030. Following the state’s historic Climate and Equitable Jobs Act, the Reimagining Electric Vehicles in Illinois Act (REV) sets out to make Illinois a hub for EV and auto battery production. More specifically, the legislation includes tax credits for income tax withholding, training costs, tax exemptions, and investment credits, as well as allowing local jurisdictions to abate property taxes for EV projects. EVs include vehicles exclusively powered by electricity and include electric cars and motorcycles. Crucially, the legislation prioritizes underserved communities and communities impacted by energy transitions. The credits range from 75 percent to 100 percent of income tax withheld for creating new jobs or 25 percent to 50 percent for retained employees, depending on various factors such as company location. Additional enhancements include a 20 percent price preference for EVs built in Illinois for state procurements and the creation of an EV Permitting Task Force to ensure permits for EV projects are streamlined. The legislation not only helps promote new business in Illinois but creates pathways to opportunity for historically underserved communities. REV incentivizes employers to locate new facilities in communities that have been historically left out of investment and prioritizes equity through vendor diversity reporting, diverse hiring plans, and workforce diversity reporting.

The 100 Club of Illinois New Board Appointee wants to make a difference Continued from page 1 BY TIA CAROL JONES

John Scott has been named to the board of the 100 Club of Illinois. He intends to use his appointment to be a bridge between the organization and the community. Scott spent more than a decade with the Chicago Public Schools, working in community engagement and governmental affairs, as well as the Chicago Board of Education. He worked directly with president of the Board and its members. Those years of experience with the Chicago Public Schools and the Chicago Board of Education led Scott into the position he serves in now with Chancelight Behavioral Health, Therapy and Education as the vice president of business development and government relations. Chancelight specializes in special education, working with school districts in special education, and alternative education, working with at-risk youth. Scott works with legislators and school board members, to engage with them to answer questions. Scott comes from a political background and worked on various campaigns throughout Chicago. Scott also worked with the 47th Ward

Democratic Organization with Paul Rosenfeld. Scott said Rosenfeld was the first person to notice his talents to work with community and elected officials. Scott worked on several gubernatorial campaigns. Scott was asked to be on the 100 Club of Illinois Board by the organization’s Treasurer. They had a relationship since they met at an event while Scott still worked for the Chicago Public Schools. He knew he could call on 100 Club of Chicago when there was a need. The 100 Club of Illinois provides resources to the families of fallen first responders. Scott was considered a good asset to the board because he could be a bridge to more communities in Chicago. The organization wanted to do more outreach. Scott saw a need for an African American voice on the board and wanted to be the one to provide it. “We’re always interacting with the police officers’ families. That’s what we’re there for. We’re there to financially help the family in that time of need and make sure their children are educated. We have had children from grammar school to those finishing up medical school, the 100 Club has paid their tuition,” he said.

Scott wants to bring awareness of the resources that the 100 Club provides. He also wants those resources to be extended into the community. Caitlyn Brennan, CEO of the 100 Club of Illinois’ Board of Directors, said Scott was chosen because he has a lot of talent and experience in the access to education space, as well as community development. The 100 Club is at a point in its 55-year history where it has expanded to a statewide organization, building a lot more community partnerships. Half of the program finances from the organization deal with higher education, Scott’s background in education can help some of the students it serves. There are 35 members of the 100 Club of Illinois Board, who span from professional to personal ties to the club, as well as survivors. “I think he fits in very well. There are a couple other members of the Board who have an education focus and some community development focus. With that group, I think those talents mesh very well,” she said. “We’re excited to have him on Board and we’re excited to have a representative from a community that will bring more access to our 100 Club Scholars.”

Museum Of Contemporary Art Chicago Appoints New Curatorial Leadership The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (MCA) announces the appointment of two new leaders to their curatorial team, René Morales as the James W. Alsdorf Chief Curator, and Jamillah James as Manilow Senior Curator. Both Morales and James will assume their roles at the MCA in January 2022. “We are building a curatorial team for the MCA’s next chapter, one that is committed to telling an inclusive art history, engaging with our community, and expanding the breadth and diversity of experience on the team. Both René and Jamillah are passionate about investing in Chicago’s community of artists, cultural stakeholders, and audiences, and their collaborative practice and open and authentic approach will be transformative for the MCA,” states MCA Pritzker Director Madeleine Grynsztejn. Born in Cienfuegos, Cuba, and raised in Miami, René Morales is an award-winning curator and significant presence in Miami’s art scene. He brings over 25 years of curatorial experience, previously serving as Director of Curatorial Affairs and Chief Curator at the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM). At PAMM, his work has focused on exhibitions and projects that reflect Miami’s diverse community and pivotal geographic location at the crossroads of the Americas. His current project, Gary Simmons: Public Enemy, the first comprehensive career survey of the multidisciplinary artist known for works that apply strong aesthetic and conceptual strategies to questions of race, class and gender identity, is originating at PAMM and will travel to the MCA in 2023. In his role as Alsdorf Chief Curator, Morales will lead the MCA’s artistic division, reconsidering the MCA’s exhibition, performance, program, learning, and

collection plans through a transcultural, inclusive and integrative lens. His emphasis on collaboration and the development of curatorial talent will strengthen the impact of the museum’s curatorial team which hails from across the globe, including the new voices of Marilyn and Larry Fields Curator, Carla Acevedo Yates; Curator, Performance and Public Practice, Tara Aisha Willis; Pamela Alper Associate Curator, Bana Kattan; Assistant Curator, Jadine Collingwood; and Assistant Curator, Performance and Public Practice, Gibran Villalobos. “As a longtime fan of the MCA and Chicago’s radiant community of artists and art professionals, I am honored to join the museum at this pivotal time. I am looking forward to drawing from Chicago’s complexity and dynamism to craft a unique program hand in hand with MCA’s brilliant team,” says Morales. Morales is the 2019 recipient of the prestigious Center for Curatorial Leadership Fellowship and served as a juror for the Whitney Museum’s 2019 Bucksbaum Prize. He sits on the board of the City of Miami Art in Public Places and the Professional Advisory Committee of the Miami-Dade County Art in Public Places. As Manilow Senior Curator, Jamillah James will lead the museum’s visual arts department and be a driving force behind the MCA’s curatorial programming. She has built her reputation through deeply researched, beautifully presented exhibitions focused on supporting emerging and underrecognized artists, a concentration that will further the MCA’s own historic commitment to new art histories. “The MCA is an institution that I have long admired and where, as a student in Chicago, I had many formative experiences with contemporary art and artists.

Visiting the MCA helped me realize the possibilities of curating and of museums. The city of Chicago is home to an incredible community of artists, and I am humbled by the opportunity to be an advocate for them as part of the MCA’s team. A leader in the field, the MCA is a true 21st century institution that is engaged with the most important discussions of the day, willing to reflect on its position and on what museums can do, and work towards what they should be—and I’m excited to be a part of its history,” says James. James was previously Senior Curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (ICA LA). She is also co-curator of Soft Water Hard Stone, the 2021 edition of the New Museum Triennial, the highly influential international exhibition in New York devoted to emerging artists from around the world, providing an important platform for a new generation of artists who are shaping the current discourse of contemporary art and the future of culture. Her work on the ICA LA’s Barbara T. Smith survey opening in 2023 was recently awarded the Foundation for Contemporary Arts annual Ellsworth Kelly Award. James has contributed texts to Artforum, The International Review of African American Art, and various institutional exhibition catalogues. She is a recipient of the inaugural Noah Davis Prize from the Underground Museum, Los Angeles and Chanel Culture Fund (2021), a curatorial research fellowship from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts (2021), and a curatorial fellowship from the VIA Art Foundation (2018). James regularly lectures on contemporary art, curating, and professional development for emerging artists and is a visiting critic in the graduate department at the Art Center College of Design, Pasadena.

Jesse White Recognizes National Donor Sabbath Virtually Unveils PSA featuring Joliet father who received five organs through donation Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White, in recognition of National Donor Sabbath, unveiled a new radio Public Service Announcement (PSA), featuring a Joliet father who received five organs through donation. The virtual event commemorating National Donor Sabbath may be viewed at www. LifeGoesOn.com. National Donor Sabbath, held from Nov. 12-14 is an interfaith campaign, aimed at educating religious communities about the importance of organ/tissue donation. “Many people buy into the myth that their religion does not support organ donation. However, most religions honor and respect organ donation as an act of generosity,” said White. According to the United Network for Organ Sharing, the major-

ity of major religions support organ and tissue donation, including Catholicism, Protestantism, Christianity, Islam and Judaism. This year’s PSA features Phillip Hanks, a Joliet father of six, who says he is alive because of his faith in God and an organ/tissue donor who generously gave him five different internal organs. “My kids are happy to have their father back and I am going to be a grandfather,” Hanks says in the PSA. “I have strong faith. I felt protected by God even after doctors told me that the transplant had a 50/50 chance of being successful.” The PSA was distributed to approximately 100 radio stations statewide to further heighten awareness about the program. To listen to the PSA, visit www.LifeGoesOn.com. Currently, almost 107,000 people are waiting for organs nationally. In Illinois, despite a registry of more than 7.2 million, approximately 4,000 people are on the waiting list. To learn more about organ/tissue donation or to register to become a donor, visit www.LifeGoesOn.com or call the Secretary of State’s Organ/Tissue Donor Program at 800-210-2106. www.citizennewspapergroup.com

StatusPRO Aims To Set Sports Standard In XR Black Co-Founders Leading a Culturally Diverse Technology Company MIAMI PRNewswire -- StatusPRO, a sports technology and gaming company that combines player data and XR (augmented reality and virtual reality) to create a suite of training and fan engagement products for enterprise and consumers, today released the list of strategic investors and industry leaders that have joined KB Partners, TitletownTech, Greycroft, Verizon Ventures, Haslam Sports Group, 49ers Enterprises, and SC Holdings in investing in StatusPRO. LeBron James, Naomi Osaka, Drake, Maverick Carter, Jimmy Iovine, Paul Wachter, and a host of professional athletes round out those named. These strategic investors reflect the range of industries and sports that StatusPRO’s technology is positioned to impact. Co-founders Andrew Hawkins (Hawk) and Troy Jones, who are a part of the less than one percent of black entrepreneurs that receive funding from traditional venture capital firms, sought investors with a track record of building sustainable businesses in sport, entertainment, and technology. “Besides the immense credibility our new investors bring to the business, they have proven the value of creating companies and brands that prioritize empowerment, diversity of thought, experience, and culture. These are some of the guiding principles of our business,” said Troy, Chief Executive Officer of StatusPRO. “It’s incredibly humbling that pioneers of their level believe in us as founders and in our vision for this industry. We always say StatusPRO is only as strong as our team, and our team just got a whole lot stronger,” said Hawk, Chief Business Officer of StatusPRO. Hawk and Troy, who are both former football players, saw a unique opportunity to blend the experiential expertise of athletes with the technological expertise of XR veterans to

revolutionize the way coaches, players, and fans experience their favorite sports. More than half of StatusPRO’s employees and contractors are former athletes and 51% of their funding to date came from minority-led or owned venture capital firms or venture capitalists. StatusPRO plans to leverage the funding and support from these industry leaders to expand on their proprietary XR technology and continue to venture into other sports beyond football. “I look for investment opportunities that can have a lasting impact on culture and society – and StatusPRO is poised to do that. It’s not only going to influence gaming and entertainment (two things I am passionate about), but also the way athletes can train and analyze their performance,” said strategic investor Naomi Osaka. “Troy and Hawk are true innovators and storytellers. I’ve seen that firsthand through the work Hawk has done for us at The SpringHill Company. What they are building with StatusPRO is another example of the incredible content that can be created when people feel empowered to share their own experiences. As former athletes themselves, they bring a unique and authentic perspective to this platform that will change the way people experience sports on every level,” said Maverick Carter, strategic investor and CEO of The SpringHill Company. With the XR industry projected to reach over $57 Billion by 2027 and more traction building in the gaming, entertainment, and even healthcare industries, StatusPRO aims to leverage its proprietary software to position itself as the industry standard when it comes to sports XR. The brand and its founders are looking to redefine the category and broaden the current user base of VR products by authentically tapping into sports and culture. teams, StatusPRO offers custom solutions for players and coaches to optimize performance, prioritize health and safety, provide training at the highest efficiencies possible, while also creating engaging entertainment for consumers. StatusPRO, Inc. is a sports technology company that combines data with augmented and virtual reality to provide a suite of training and gaming products that revolutionize the way coaches, players, and fans experience their favorite sport. Powered by the insights of current and former professional athletes, some of which are early investors, StatusPRO is dedicated to reshaping fan engagement while en route to becoming the de facto experiential training platform for professional, collegiate, and amateur athletes. Headquartered in Miami, FL, StatusPRO is minority-owned and led where almost half of its US-based employees are former athletes. Their proprietary training technology is currently used by multiple NCAA and National Football League

teams, including the Baltimore Ravens. The training platform uses real-time player data to power holographic experiences that give players the ability to simulate any practice or game scenario without the physical impact that comes with playing the game. StatusPRO extracts these scenarios to create an immersive experience that allows fans to be as close to the game as they have ever been while at the stadium or in the comfort of their own home. StatusPRO has active partnerships with Lamar Jackson, one of only two unanimous NFL MVP winners ever, and the National Football League Players Association. Partnering to help create opportunities Last year, Bank of America committed $1.25 billion over five years to advance racial equality and economic opportunity. To date, we’ve directly funded or invested one-third of this amount on top of long-standing efforts to make an impact in our communities and address society’s greatest challenges. Here are some of the ways we’re working to make a difference: • Investing $300 million in 100 minority-owned and minority-led equity funds, including Supply Change Capital. This will help diverse entrepreneurs and small business owners create more jobs, financial stability and growth. • Investing $36 million in 21 Minority Depository Institutions (MDIs) and Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) banks, such as First Women’s Bank, that support minority-owned businesses. This is in addition to approximately $100 million in deposits to MDIs and our existing CDFI portfolio of more than $2 billion, which helps build pathways to economic vitality in local markets. • Providing funding and support through innovative programs and partnerships with community colleges, universities and nonprofits, including Harold Washington College, City Colleges of Chicago, that offer training and credentialing programs connecting more people to high-wage, in-demand careers. We’re doing this work in collaboration with community partners, business leaders, experts and academics across the public and private sectors to ensure that our investments are directed where they’re needed most. Together, we can help drive sustainable progress in Chicago. What would you like the power to do? ®
