ccording to letsmove. gov, over the past three decades, childhood obesity rates in America have tripled, and today, nearly one in three children are overweight or obese. The numbers are even higher in African American and Hispanic communities, where nearly 40% of the children are overweight or obese. If these statistics aren’t motivation enough to get kids moving, then maybe an analysis of the end result might be a pause for cause. If nothing is done to solve the problem, letsmove.gov reports that one third of all children born in 2000 or later will suffer from diabetes at some point in their lives.

any others will face chronic obesityrelated health problems like heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, and asthma, all of which are life-threatening illnesses. Changes in lifestyle over the years have only compounded the problem, the website further reports. “Thirty years ago, most people led lives that kept them at a healthy weight. Kids walked to and from school every day, ran around at recess, participated in gym class, and played for hours after school and before dinner. Meals were home-cooked with reasonable portion sizes and there was always a vegetable on the plate. Eating fast food was rare and snacking between meals was an occasional treat. Today, children experience a very different lifestyle. Walks to and from school have been replaced by car and bus rides. Gym class and after-school sports have been cut; afternoons are now spent with TV, video games, and the internet. Parents are busier than ever and families eat fewer homecooked meals. Snacking between meals is now commonplace.” In addition to that, portion sizes have exploded and are now, “two to five times bigger than they were in years past,” while on the average, Americans are consuming, “fifteen more pounds of sugar a year than they did in 1970.” Launched by the First Lady, Let’s Move has had an impact on children nationwide. As one of her most important initiatives, it’s changing how people think, eat and live. Dedicated to solving the challenge of childhood obesity within a generation so that children born today will grow up healthier with the ability to pursue their dreams, Let’s Move combines comprehensive strategies by taking a common sense approach. Since its inception, it’s put a growing number of children on the path to a healthy future during their earliest months and years. The program also provides parents with helpful information and fosters environments that support healthy choices. Through the program, the First Lady has promoted healthier foods in schools, worked to ensure every family has access to healthy, affordable food and she’s been instrumental in helping children to become more physically active. The alarming statistics and the end results of obesity are no doubt, bad news. But the good news is Let’s Move gets everyone involved. From parents to schools to kids, to healthcare providers and others, each person plays a vital role in securing a healthier lifestyle for children. It’s taken years to get to where we are with childhood obesity and the problem didn’t crop up overnight and more likely than not, it won’t be solved overnight. But even a few simple lifestyle changes can have a significant impact. In the final analysis, it’s going to take a village to promote healthier lifestyles while working towards healthier communities and a brighter future for tomorrow. For details on how to get involved, go to www. letsmove.gov for more information.

w For parents, let’smove.gov suggests simple things like: • Keeping fruit within reach so that kids can easily grab a quick snack • Taking a walk with the family after dinner • Planning a menu for the week and getting kids involved in the planning process • Turning off the TV during meals and sharing some family time and; • Talking to the school principal about organizing a school health team.

w For schools: • Creating a school health advisory council • Joining the HealthierUS Schools Challenge • Setting a good example by making your school a healthy workplace • Incorporating nutrition education and physical education into the school day and; • Planting a garden.

w Neighborhood and faith-based organizations are well positioned to initiate and coordinate activities, according to the site. Organizations can: • Establish that wellness is a priority for your organization and provide leadership through consistent messaging • Identify a Wellness Ambassador and direct them to create and lead a Wellness Council or Ministry and; • Empower your community’s Wellness Ambassador to organize a Wellness Council.

w Mayors and local officials play a role as well. Although each town will require its own distinct approach to the issue, some suggestions offered on the website include: • Becoming a Let’s Move! City, Town or County • Enacting changes that give parents the tools they need to make healthy choices such as launching a city website with information for parents on healthy living • Working with local childcare providers and afterschool programs to implement evidence-based standards for nutrition, physical activity and screen time within childcare settings. • Improving food choices for children in public venues in cities and; • Working to improve restaurant meals for children city-wide.

1 ICC Holds Third Annual Supplier Diversity Policy Session CHICAGO – The Illinois Commerce Commission hosted its third annual supplier diversity policy session recently with a focus on encouraging Illinois utilities to work with more diverse businesses, including those owned by minorities, women, and veterans. All five ICC Commissioners were in attendance, and Commissioners Miguel del Valle, Sherina Maye Edwards and John Rosales led the session. Participants included State Representative William Davis (D-30), Ralph G. Moore, president of RGMA; John Rogers, Jr., chairman and chief executive officer, Ariel Investments; Gloria Castillo, president and chief executive officer of Chicago United, Anne Pramaggiore, president and chief executive officer of Commonwealth Edison; Charles Matthews, president of Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas; Bruce Hauk, president of Illinois American Water; and Melvin Williams, president of Nicor “I want to see Gas. more ambitious The goals and efforts Commission supports to increase the goal of Public Act opportunities for 97-1041 to increase diverse suppliers in the participation of all (of the utilities) women, minority projects. “ and veteran business enterprises in procurement contracts with regulated entities. At the session, the Commission reviewed Illinois utilities’ compliance with Section 5-117 of the Public Utilities Act, which requires regulated gas, electric and water utilities with 100,000 customers or more to annually report procurement goals and actual spend for minorityowned, women-owned, veteran-owned and small businesses. Each utility presented an overview of its actual spend in 2015 with women-owned, minority-owned and veteran-owned businesses, as well as goals for future procurement opportunities. The participants also highlighted current outreach programs designed to identify, promote and increase engagement with diverse businesses. The utilities’ reports can be found here on the ICC’s website. “Illinois’ utility infrastructure and industries in electricity, gas, and water are going through a transformation, and this means there is more opportunity for the utilities and diverse suppliers,” Commissioner del Valle said. “I want to see more ambitious goals and efforts to increase opportunities for diverse suppliers in all (of the utilities) projects. This requires the utilities to be more aggressive and willing to go beyond their comfort zone in terms of their efforts to identify and grow the pool of diverse vendors in all product and service categories,” del Valle added.

1 Reports Show Internet Empowers Cancer Patients New reports reveal treating cancer could be just a click away. It all comes down to two web-based cancer initiatives that show the internet has the potential to give patients more power over the research and treatment of their diseases. Researchers believe it empowers patients and helps them track their symptoms in a more calculated ways. In fact, French researchers say in one study, advanced lung- cancer patients who submitted weekly reports of their symptoms to doctors via a smartphone app lived substantially longer than those who had their disease checked in the normal way with a CT scan every 12 weeks or 24 weeks. After one year, 75% of patients using the app were alive compared with 49% of those who had standard doctor visits. “It is not a surprise that patients that communicate with their doctors more frequently fair better. This helps in getting therapies and other medications better integrated, making the treatments more effective and less toxic. From the research standpoint this is a tremendous tool to help understand on a real time basis how the body is reacting,” Houston Surgeon Dr. Rafael Lugo said. Reports on both studies were presented Monday at the meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology in Chicago. The news comes amid surging interest in patientdriven research facilitated by social-media technology and such data-gathering tools as Fitbit step-trackers and wearable sensors. Apple Inc.’s ResearchKit, released last year, for instance, has spawned smartphone-enabled clinical trials in a variety of diseases, reflecting the belief that real-time data reported by or gathered from the patient hold important but often missed clues about what drives health or disease and how the body responds to or resists treatment. In the French study, 133 patients from five cancer centers in France were randomized to either reporting symptoms weekly with the app or the standard CT scan every three months. The app participants recorded their status on 12 symptoms including fatigue, pain, cough frequency and weight loss. An algorithm in the app analyzes the responses and sends an alert to the doctor if it senses a likely relapse. That prompts a call to the patient to come in for a checkup and possible changes in care. Dr. Lugo says, “For a doctor, either in research or in clinical practice, information and data about a patient’s well being and symptoms, or psychological responses, is invaluable. In order to personalize and improve the efficiency of treatments, we need to get as much feedback as possible from the individual. Instead of the shot gun approach, it will be much more personalized to the individual needs and their genetic make up. This is all very exciting and promising.”

Money MATTERS Social Security Benefits Lose 23% of Buying Power Since 2000 Social Security beneficiaries have lost 23 percent of their buying power since 2000, according to the 2016 Survey of Senior Costs released recently by The Senior Citizens League (TSCL). The findings indicate that except for higher medical and prescription drug costs, overall prices have changed relatively little over the past year. Inflation remains very low, almost nil, mainly due to the dramatic drop in oil prices. “TSCL is concerned,” says TSCL Chairman Ed Cates. “There appears to be a high risk of either an extremely low annual cost - of - living adjustment (COLA) next year, or worse — none at all,” he says. Older Americans and disabled Social Security beneficiaries received no cost-ofliving adjustment (COLA) in 2016 due to low inflation last year, but TSCL’s new survey found that lower inflation didn’t translate into lower household expenses in 2015. In fact, nearly 1,200 survey respondents recently said that monthly household expenses made steep increases in 2015. The majority, 72%, indicated their monthly expenses went up by more than $79. “With

today’s Social Security benefit averaging $1,230 per month, that’s an unsustainable level when there’s no benefit increase to match,” Cates says. In most years, Social Security beneficiaries receive a small increase in their Social Security checks, intended to help them keep up with rising costs. But since 2000, the COLAs rose a total of just 36.3 percentage points while typical senior expenses have jumped 75.3 percent. “Going without any COLA in 2016 has longterm consequences for retirees when real costs continue to climb,” Cates says. “People must spend down retirement savings more quickly than expected, and those without savings are either going into debt, or going without,” he says. A person with average Social Security benefits in 2000 received $816 per month, a figure that rose to $1,166.30 by 2016. However, according to the survey, that individual would require a Social Security benefit of $1,430.50 per month in 2016 just to maintain his or her 2000 buying power, the study found. The study examined the increase in costs of 38 key items between 2000 and January 2016.

The items were chosen because they are typical of the costs that most Social Security recipients must bear. Of the 38 costs analyzed, 29 exceeded the amount of increase in the COLA over the same period. The selected items represent eight categories, weighted by approximate expenditure. “This study illustrates why Congress should enact legislation to provide an emergency COLA this year,” says Cates. “To put it in perspective, for every $100 worth of expenses seniors could afford in 2000, they can afford just $77.00 today,” Cates adds. A majority of the 57 million senior and disabled Americans who receive Social Security depend on it for at least 50 percent of their total income, and one in four beneficiaries relies on it for 90 percent or more of his or her total income. To help protect buying power of benefits, TSCL supports legislation that would base COLAs on the Consumer Price Index for the Elderly. TSCL and its members are lobbying Congress for an emergency COLA for 2016. To learn more, visit http://www.SeniorsLeague.org.

EVENT OF THE WEEK

MSI exhibit showcases technological breakthroughs The United States’ Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is the focus of a first-of-its-kind exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago (MSI). DARPA: Redefining Possible highlights some of the remarkable innovations that have kept the United States at the forefront of technology. From robotics to GPS devices, the Internet to voice recognition software, this exhibit showcases the agency’s history, rare artifacts and hands-on activities. The exhibit runs through September 5, 2016, and is included in Museum Entry. “This is the first time that DARPA is displaying their work to the public, and many people may not realize that they use DARPA-created innovations every single day,” Director of Collections Kathleen McCarthy said. “MSI consistently displays and demonstrates the greatest advancements in technology, and we’re excited to host this exhibit that puts DARPA’s world-altering work on display.” DARPA was founded in 1958 in response to the Soviet Union’s launch of Sputnik, the world’s first artificial satellite. The agency was created to position America as a leader in discovering new areas of science and engineering relevant to national security. In this self-guided exhibit, guests can learn more about the history of the agency alongside one-of-a-kind tech artifacts on display. Museum guests will explore real artifacts as part of DARPA’s past and continuing work including: Atlas, the 6-foot-2, 350-pound, highmobility humanoid robot designed to navigate rough outdoor terrain and provide assistance after natural disasters. Spot, an agile autonomous quadruped that

is the world’s most technically advanced robotic dog. The DEKA Arm System, a sophisticated prosthetic arm that matches the size and weight of an average female arm, contains its own power supply and can be worn comfortably by its user. A large-scale model of the Sea Hunter, DARPA’s recently christened 132-foot submarine-tracking ship, designed to cruise for thousands of kilometers and months on end without a single crew member aboard, alongside video of the vessel’s first openwater speed trials. An intricate look at today’s microelectronic chips, which help advance robotics and artificial intelligence research. An “air legs” exoskeleton device that provides the lower limbs of soldiers or others with rhythmic bursts of power to increase endurance and decrease injuries during long hikes with heavy loads. A look at the small, sophisticated electrode arrays used to help people with traumatic brain injury and assist in neurological control of prosthetic arms. Hands-on activities allow guests to create their own robot in an interactive game. Create a virtual robot by mixing and matching parts to power and strengthen the ‘bot, while learning how various sensors and limbs allow robots to complete a certain task. Learn more about innovations you might use daily, like the GPS in your car or the iPad you use at home, initially created by the agency. Giving Back to the Industry He Loves (NewsUSA) - There’s something to be said for the media gurus who immerse themselves in the whole industry. Multi-media mogul Armstrong Williams began as a South Carolina high schooler with an aptitude for public speaking and wound up hosting a daily radio show and nationally syndicated TV program, “The Right Side With Armstrong Williams.” The 51-year-old entrepreneur has never shown signs of slowing down. His early PR work turned into a full-fledged devotion to broadcasting, and now he’s a regular conservative columnist for publications like Newsmax and the Washington Times. Williams is also frequently invited as a guest commentator on networks such as MSNBC, Washington Watch, C-SPAN, Sky news and Joy Behar’s “Say Anything.”

The Washington Post describes the radio host as “one of the most recognized conservative voices in America.” He’s also a provocative voice who doesn’t believe in partisan politics and isn’t afraid to challenge anyone, be they representatives or their constituents. “Although my fundamental values haven’t changed, my perspective has broadened. Above all, I do not delve into partisan politics,” says Williams, who’s always willing to take on legislators. Williams is all too familiar with the political landscape in Washington, noting that “public policy is inherently grey,” but his expertise exceeds the realm of politics. Now that Williams has hosted television and radio programs, including his daily 6-7pm EST Sirius 128 Live broadcast, and solidified himself

programming, but with the help of Sinclair Broadcast Group, his company Howard Stirk Holdings, LLC now owns two full-powered broadcast stations, NBC 25 WEYI, Flint, Mich. and

CW WWMB 25, Myrtle Beach, S.C. Williams’ venture emerged from a larger deal in which Sinclair acquired the assets of 18 other TV stations -- further cementing Sinclair as America’s largest independent owner of broadcast TV. Williams’ longstanding professional history with Sinclair shows he’s already versed in managing programming, advertising and producing prime-time specials. “[The] announcement fulfills a lifelong dream to own and operate broadcast facilities and give back to an industry that I love,” Williams says. “Many in the industry talk about diversity and expanding opportunity, but here the Sinclair Broadcast Group is putting words into action.” Learn more at www. rightsidenews.com.

(NewsUSA) - Sponsored News - Most parents know the best way to get kids to read later in life is to read to them early and often. But even parents’ best efforts to create bookworms sometimes fall flat -- especially in today’s world of lights and action best seen from a screen. Yet, studies continue to suggest that the benefits of reading from an early age not only teach kids the rules of syntax and expand their vocabulary, but, according to one study released last year, also activate the part of the brain that allows them to understand the meaning of language. Because of its interest in closing the reading gap among children in this country, RRKidz Inc., home of the beloved children’s brand Reading Rainbow, embarked on a Kickstarter campaign in the summer of 2014. Through generous donations by its legions of fans, the company raised more than $6.4 million in 35 days. As a result, Skybrary Family, the award-winning digital library of books and videos, was released. On the heels of this successful introduction, RRKidz Inc. is

proud to announce the launch of Skybrary School, an educatorspecific version with features designed to increase reading frequency and build literacy skills. This new digital library, especially for early elementary school students (K-3) and their educators, offers close to 1,000 fiction and non-fiction books, all in the hopes of creating life-long readers and learner“Teachers devote their lives to giving students the tools needed to succeed in reading, and we want to make sure we are doing the same for them,” said LeVar Burton. “With Reading Rainbow’s Skybrary Family and now Skybrary School, we are offering a comprehensive solution to assist both educators and parents in providing engaging and relevant content to develop children’s literacy and learning skills.” In addition, the service features more than 200 educational video field trips hosted by Burton, such as a trip to the White House, peeking inside the Mars Rover at NASA, behind the

Peanuts are a superfood with more than 30 essential nutrients. Rio Star grapefruit delivers a burst of nutrition with one-half of a mediumsized grapefruit delivering: • One fruit serving for adults, antioxidant vitamins C and A, fiber and lycopene — all with only 60 calories. • 100% of the daily requirement of vitamin C for adults. CANCER Cancer is the fourth astrological sign in the Zodiac, which spans the Zodiac between the 90th and 119th degree of celestial longitude. It is considered a water sign and one of four cardinal signs. Cancer is ruled by the Moon. In the Tropical zodiac, the Sun transits this area of the zodiac between June 21st to July 21st each year. In Sidereal astrology, the sun currently transits the constellation of Cancer from July 16 to August 15 (approximately). Individuals born during these dates, depending on which system of astrology they subscribe to, may be called “Cancerians”.

Mythology

According to an ancient Greek legend, the figure of a crab was placed in the nighttime sky by the goddess Hera to form the constellation Cancer. Hera swore to kill Heracles, the most famous Greek hero. Hera attempted to kill Heracles in many different ways, but each time his incredible physical strength allowed him to survive. Hera cast a spell of madness on Heracles, causing him to commit a great crime. In order to be forgiven, he had to perform twelve difficult tasks. One of these tasks was destroying the terrible nine-headed water-serpent, Hydra. During the battle between Heracles and Hydra, the goddess Hera sent a crab to aid the serpent. But Heracles, being so strong, killed the crab by smashing its shell with his foot. As a reward for its service, Hera placed the crab’s image in the night sky. However, there are many different stories regarding this; in one version, instead of Hera graciously placing it in the sky, Heracles kicked the crab to the stars, but this is not known for sure.

Compatibilities

In Synastry, the natives of Cancer are generally considered to be compatible with the natives of the other water signs Scorpio and Pisces, and the natives of the earth signs Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. Aries and Libra are signs of the other nature (masculine/extroverted), but are considered semi-compatible with Cancer due to them having the same cardinal quality.

Outdoor Kitchens Add Fun, Function

I

f your backyard beckons when temperatures climb, an outdoor kitchen may be the perfect answer for your next construction or remodeling project. Outdoor kitchens bring color, style and design to your backyard landscape while adding a fully functional living space to your home. Whether you tend to enjoy your backyard with close family or frequently host a larger group, creating a work zone close to the action lets you keep tabs on all the fun. By bringing the same luxuries and conveniences of interior kitchens outdoors, you can stay in the middle of it all while serving up meals that keep the party going well into the evening. The options are nearly endless when it comes to designing your ideal outdoor kitchen. Consider these key areas as you begin planning your project: Location comes first. A well-designed outdoor kitchen flows from the home and creates a natural transition to the rest of the landscape. As you contemplate the location and orientation, think about how the kitchen will be incorporated into your existing outdoor living space. Let the land guide your design. Seamless style. still plenty of decisions to make, such as the best placement of your grilling appliances. Don’t forget to factor in wind, which may force smoke into your house or dining areas, or create the need to incorporate a ventilation hood. Also keep your cooking style in mind, which may help you determine how to lay out other features, such as the work space and other cooking and cooling appliances, so they are in easy reach. Menu options. Think about the types of foods and beverages you’ll want to serve outdoors. For example, a backyard bar may warrant an extra sink, larger refrigerator, ice maker, wine cooler and/or beer dispenser. For interactive kitchen fun, you may opt for a pizza oven that is both attractive and deliciously entertaining. Know the code. Remember that the purpose of an outdoor kitchen is to provide function, which you can only achieve with proper plumbing, gas and electric. Do your research to determine any local building code requirements and be sure to check with your home owners association or any other group that may govern a remodeling project on your property. To get your project started on the right track, enlist the help of a design professional.
