LAW & POLITICS

Rush Introduces Resolution Designating the Week of February 12 through February 16, 2018 as ‘‘Black Women’s Heart Health Awareness Week’’ WASHINGTON — U.S. Representative Bobby L. Rush (D-Ill.) introduced, H. Res. 722, a resolution supporting the designation of the week of February 12 through February 16, 2018 as “Black Women’s Heart Health Awareness Week” to raise awareness and understanding that heart disease is the number one killer of women and that it disproportionately affects black women. As the country celebrates Black History Month and American Heart Month this February, it is critical to elevate both the cultural significance of the month and the awareness of the health crisis directly impacting black women. “This is an issue that hits close to home, as I lost my beloved wife and best friend, Carolyn, to heart disease last year,” said Rush. “I am personally committed to doing what I can to help educate black women about their health risk and how to prevent this disease from impacting their lives. Black women are leading the way in our country and we must do everything we can to not only promote their successes but protect their hearts.”

The ARK Cultivating Youth through Journalism, Mentoring Programs Continued from Page 1 By Christopher Shuttlesworth

For more than a decade, The ARK of St. Sabina has offered a variety of free after school programs for youth and young adults aged 6-28, serving between 70-120 participants in the Auburn-Gresham community. “The Ark” was named by Reverend Michael L. Pfleger, senior pastor of The Faith Community of Saint Sabina Roman Catholic Church and serves as a safe haven for at-risk youth. In recent years, the ARK redesigned its youth program to better cultivate the minds of community youth. “We service any youth, including 81 schools that can make it out,” Courtney Holmon, senior program director for The Ark said. “These students are our future and there aren’t too many opportunities for them. It’s about being a helping hand to our community. The whole point of these programs is to create leaders and make sure whatever profession they choose, they come back and do the same for kids after them.” The youth programs are run on Monday through Friday from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. In addition, The ARK of St. Sabina manages a high school journalism program as well as a violence prevention

group on Thursdays. Holmon said there is also a female and male mentoring program available for high school students staffed by mentors who students can openly talk to. She added if a teen hasn’t been mentored at home because mom was always working or dad may not have been around, then having a mentor is important because it provides a support system. Students need someone to teach them about dreams and goals so their perceptions can be changed to help them overcome their current challenges, she added. By mentoring the teens, workers give them, “something to look forward to.”Winter enrollment is currently open for the following programs; Music Studio, Youth Entrepreneurship Program, L.Y.R.I.C. Poetry Group (Let Your Rhyms Inspire Creativity), Employment, Step/Drill Team, Neighborhood Recovery Initiative, Safety Networks, Tutoring, Karate, Mentoring, Program Basketball, Hip Hop Dance, Film/ Video Production, Computer Lab, Jazz Alive, Arts & Crafts, WPT (World Performance Team, males only), G.E.M. Step Team (females only). For more information, visit https://www.thearkofstsabina. org/.

Nicholas Smith Sworn in as New State Representative By Christopher Shuttlesworth

Nicholas Smith was recently sworn in, by Judge Freddrenna Lyle, as Illinois State Representative of the 34th District at the Pullman National Monument Site Visitor Center. Previously, Smith served as the Ninth Ward Streets and Sanitation Superintendent and as the Former President of the Roseland Heights Community Association, according to www. sixthward.us. “I can’t think of a better person to take this position than Smith because he is a public servant and you want people who represent you to be servants with servant hearts,” Judge Lyle said. “Plus, Smith lives in the community so if you see him walking down the street, feel free to check him to keep him focused and well-grounded.” After being sworn in as the new State Rep., Smith acknowledged all of his colleagues and friends who have continued to support his efforts in the community. “This job is not just representing the people in my community of the 34th District but the decisions we make in Springfield, Illinois effect the entire state,” Smith said. “So, as I look around the room at co-workers, family and friends, I know this is why we do this.” He continued to share a story about when he served with Alderman Anthony Beale. A community resident called the office to ask if Mayor Rahm Emanuel was Beale’s boss. Smith replied “No, you are.” “The voters are the boss,” Smith said. “If you don’t like what’s going on then every two or four years you have the opportunity to change it. So, spread the word to your neighbors, family and friends about the importance of voting.” He said if more people would have voted in the previous election, the State of Illinois and Chicago would not be in the

www.thechicagocitizen.com

financial situation it’s in today. “The mess that’s going on in Springfield right now is because of people’s lack of voting,” Smith said. “If they voted correctly, we wouldn’t be in this mess. But I’m going to join this fight in Springfield to defend you, but we have a Mar. 20 Primary Electing coming and I want all of you to be at the polls because the only way we can make change is by voting.” As Smith was being sworn in, Judge Lyle told him that a great burden is being placed on his shoulders with much responsibility. “I want you to understand that you represent those aspirations of people that have gone on before,” Lyle told Smith. “Your ancestors could never have dreamed of this and with this burden comes great responsibility to do great things.”

Pritzker, Stratton, and Rush Release Statements Regarding Leaked FBI Tape Chicago Tribune recently released a controversial FBI wiretap which showed Illinoisans a new side of J.B. Pritzker, democratic candidate for Illinois governor. On the tapes, you can hear Pritzker talking with then-Governor Rod Blagojevich about who should be nominated to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Barack Obama, according to an article published by the Chicago Tribune Feb. 6. The phone call was recorded in late 2008 by the FBI during an investigation of Gov. Blagojevich who was later convicted of attempting to sell the Senate seat, according to a Chicago Tribune article published on Aug. 23, 2016. Pritzker suggests Secretary of State Jesse White should take the seat and says he is “the one that’s least offensive.” Pritzker tells the Governor that nominating White “covers you on the African American thing.” Pritzker also stated that White would be a good option for the empty seat because moving him would open up the Secretary of State position which he calls a “key spot” and then goes on to tell the governor “you don’t have to put an African American in that spot.” The recording can be heard on the Chicago Tribune’s website. Pritzker immediately released a public apology. “I’ve been longtime friends with Jesse White for more than 35 years. He is one of our great statesmen and one of the most respected public servants in the history of Illinois. I think now as I did then that he would have made a great United States Senator,” Pritzker stated. “Today, I want to be clear about one thing. I wasn’t my best self on that call, and I apologize for that. I regret some of the things I said and some of the things I didn’t say, but that is not what is in my heart and those are not my values.” Pritzker’s running mate, Juliana Stratton also spoke on his behalf saying, “I joined this campaign because of JB’s values, his record of helping people, and his compassion. All along, JB and I have had countless frank conversations about race, the challenges we face as a state and a country, and the path forward. He is someone who really listens and seeks to understand,” Stratton stated. Congressman Bobby Rush, who previously endorsed Chris Kennedy for governor of Illinois, released a statement on the matter saying, “It was discouraging to hear the despicable conversation between J.B. Pritzker and former Governor Rod Blagojevich, as they discuss leaders in the African-American community in such a dismissive and disrespectful manner. It was particularly jarring to listen to this audio as the country celebrates Black History Month and reflects on the historical and cultural accomplishments of our community.” “To hear these men describe the ways in which they believe they are covered, ‘on the African-American thing’ is simply outrageous. Black people are not ‘things’ nor is the black community a collection of political pawns on a chessboard to be moved around and manipulated by privileged white men. In that regard, former Illinois Senate President Emil Jones Jr. refused to accept his apology and the AfricanAmerican community deserves a more committed and sincere expressive change of heart. This type of rhetoric and thinking has no place in public discourse and should be widely condemned,” Rush stated.

GAGDC Honors Local Senior Citizens with Breakfast By Christopher Shuttlesworth

The Greater Auburn Gresham Development Corporation (GAGDC) is planning to host a Breakfast and Blues event for seniors on Feb. 24 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at Namoi & Sylvester Smith Senior Living, 8031 S. Halsted. Linda Johnson, a representative of GAGDC, said the organization has conducted the senior event twice a year since 2004 at the original space, the Thurgood Marshall Library. A live Blues band will kick off the celebration with Joey Dee and the Starliters. “We get up to 200 seniors,” said Johnson adding, “This is our opportunity to honor our seniors, not just from Auburn-Gresham, but all across Chicago and the suburbs.” She continued to say that seniors are important to the world because they’ve paved the way for younger generations. Seniors in the Auburn-Gresham community laid the foundation for families, schools and businesses, she said. As an inter-generational event, volunteers will include Chicago Cares and students from Simeon Career Academy, Leo High School and more local schools. “We want to make sure our students learn the

www.thechicagocitizen.com

aspect of respect,” Johnson said. “I know we may not see a lot of this on the street, so as our students see us adults humble ourselves and serve, we’re hoping we can teach them strength.” She highlighted that the Auburn-Gresham community honors the community with African Adinkra symbols’ banners, which are visual symbols, originally created by the Akan of Ghana that represent concepts or aphorisms. “We integrate the Adinkra symbols’ meanings into things we do within the organization,” Johnson said. “In the African tradition, our seniors are our elders and through them we get enlightenment, knowledge and wisdom. So, we as adults want to teach that to our students and pass the baton.” GAGDC will close out the Breakfast and Blues event with a February funding raising campaign entitled, “GAGDC Give A Heart For Our Seniors,” to assist with programs and services offered for seniors. The campaign is designed to promote monthly giving and building on GAGDC’s love for community seniors. Chicagoans can support the campaign by donating at http://www.gagdc.org/donate.html. The Breakfast and Blues event is being sponsored by Red Across, AARP Foundation and Golden Gate Funeral Home.

REALTOR® Magazine Seeks Nominations for 2018 Good Neighbor Awards WASHINGTON - Realtors®, members of the National Association of Realtors®, not only help people find the right place to live, they are also committed volunteers who give back to their communities. Seventy-one percent of Realtors® volunteered in their community last year, according to NAR’s 2017 Member Profile. NAR is currently accepting applications for REALTOR® Magazine’s Good Neighbor Awards from Realtors® who have made an impact on the world through community service. Entries must be received by Friday, May 4, 2018. Five winners will be announced in the November/December issue of REALTOR® Magazine and will receive a $10,000 grant for their nonprofit organizations. The winners will be recognized at the 2018 REALTORS® Conference & Expo in Boston, receive travel expenses to the conference, and gain national and local media exposure for their cause. In addition to the winners, five honorable mentions will each receive a $2,500 grant. “Every year Realtors® across the country are raising the bar and working harder than ever to make a difference in their communities through volunteer work,” says NAR President Elizabeth Mendenhall, CEO of RE/MAX Boone Realty in Columbia, Missouri. “For almost two decades, more than 180 Good Neighbors have shown outstanding dedication to their causes, which has had a tremendous impact on their neighbors and community.”

Since 2000, the Good Neighbor Awards program has donated more than $1.1 million to Realtor®-led nonprofits around the country. The success of the program has been possible through the support of primary sponsor realtor.com® and Wells Fargo Home Mortgage. “We are honored to renew our commitment to support the amazing volunteer work of the

Good Neighbors,” said Luke Glass, executive vice president of realtor.com®. “Now more than ever, it’s important to celebrate these individuals who invest their time and their personal touch to make a substantial and lasting impact in their community and in the lives of those they benefit.” Realtor.com® also sponsors the Web Choice Favorite component, an award that will confer additional grant money to the three finalists who get the most votes from the public. Last year’s Good Neighbor Awards winners contributed thousands of hours and raised millions of dollars for their causes. More than 5,000 Realtors® and guests were on hand to show their appreciation to the winners during the 2017 annual

conference in Chicago. The 2017 winners were Bryson Garbett, Garbett Homes, Salt Lake City, Utah, founder of Foundation Escalera; Howard “Hoddy” Hanna, Howard Hanna Real Estate, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, founding chairman of the Howard Hanna Children’s Free Care Fund; Kay Wilson-Bolton, Century 21 Troop Real Estate, Santa Paula, California, founder of the SPIRIT of Santa Paula; Louise McLean, RE/MAX Solutions, Merritt Island, Florida, founder of Space Coast Association of Realtors® Foundation; and Sal Dimiceli, Lake Geneva Realty, Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, founder of The Time Is Now to Help. To be eligible, nominees must be NAR members in good standing. Good Neighbor Award entries must be received by Friday, May 4, 2018. More Students are Going to Grad School: How are They Paying for It? (StatePoint) Career aspirations are driving more students to graduate school these days, and nearly two thirds believe an advanced degree is the new minimum standard level of education for any professional occupation. According to “How America Pays for Graduate School,” the new national study from Sallie Mae and Ipsos, an independent global market research company, nearly all grad students (95 percent) said an advanced degree is necessary to enter, advance, accelerate or remain competitive in their chosen career. Cost is less of a factor in the enrollment decision than it is at the undergraduate level, as more than eight in 10 surveyed based their enrollment decision on a school’s academic offerings, prestige, location, campus culture, or other personal consideration. However, eight in 10 grad students said they took more responsibility for paying-for-school decisions than they had for their undergraduate studies. “It is human nature to plan for what you value, and that includes graduate school. Today’s students see graduate school as their ticket to a successful and prosperous career, and most have a plan to pay for their advanced degree before they enroll,” says

Raymond J. Quinlan, chairman and CEO, Sallie Mae. “That planning pays off: the overwhelming majority are confident in the financial decisions they’ve made about how to pay for their graduate education.” How much did they pay? Students spent an average of $24,812 on grad school in academic

www.thechicagocitizen.com

year 2016-17, and more than three-fourths of them (77 percent) paid for it, at least in part, by borrowing. Funds borrowed by students covered more than half of the cost (53 percent), while money students earned, including income and savings, paid for 24 percent. Grants, fellowships, scholarships, and tuition waivers accounted for 15 percent, while eight percent of grad school costs came from funds borrowed or contributed by parents or others. The study also reveals that scholarships and grants are less available for grad students than for undergrads, accounting for just 15 percent of grad school costs. In response, Sallie Mae announced a new Bridging the Dream Scholarship for Graduate Students that will award four $20,000 scholarships in 2018. Students may apply by Feb. 14 by visiting SallieMae.com/BridgingtheDreamGrad. To view the complete report, visit SallieMae. com/HowAmericaPaysGrad and join the conversation using #HowGradsPay. As a graduate degree continues to become the educational norm, students will continue to plan and find creative ways to meet the cost.

L’Oréal Paris Debuts Second Phase Of Elvive Hair Care “Comeback” Campaign NEW YORK, L’Oréal Paris launched Elvive Hair Care to help revive all forms of hair damage – whether from heat styling, dryness or color processing. The brand knows everyone loves a comeback and believes hair deserves one too. The newest phase of the brand’s “Comeback” campaign, which celebrates the power of a comeback, is rooted in the fact that dry hair can make one too. To bring this to life, L’Oréal Paris spokeswoman and singer-songwriter Camila Cabello shares her personal and hair comeback stories. “I think a comeback is defined as struggling through something and having the strength and resolution to push past it,” says Camila Cabello. “For me, it was about taking chances, aiming high and believing that I was worth it. I can now finally hear everything my heart was telling me.” “We are very proud to partner with Camila for the launch of Elvive,” says Tim Coolican, President, L’Oréal Paris USA. “Elvive was designed to address the 80% of women in the U.S. who experience some form of hair damage daily. The line builds on L’Oreal Paris’ commitment to creating innovative products, services and experiences that help people look and feel their best every day.” Elvive is a treatment-led hair care line that has active patents until 2026 and contains powerful ingredients that are proven to revive damaged hair. The treatments are supported by tailored shampoos and conditioners to complete the regimen.

The Extraordinary Oil collection, which Camila’s campaign focuses on, targets dry and undernourished hair. Daily actions such as brushing or styling can actually cause hair to become dry and brittle. In Camila’s case, her hair often goes through multiple hairstyle changes – including brushing, curling, straightening, teasing and more – in just one performance. A leave-in or hydrating treatment can help mitigate this type of hair stress and keep hair silky and luminous. The hero treatment within the Extraordinary Oil line is the Extraordinary Oil Treatment which is a multi-use, leave-in product infused with camellia and golden sunflower oils. In just one use, hair is left ten times more moisturized with no greasiness or weigh-down. It has been tested on all hair types and can be uniquely integrated into hair routines in a multitude of ways including: as a post-shampoo detangler to mitigate friction when brushing, used preblow dry to reduce flyaways and as a finisher for added shine. The Elvive products are available nationwide. All Elvive shampoos and conditioners have a suggested retail price of $4.99 and all treatments have a suggested retail price of $6.99. Directed by Roman Coppola, Camila’s “Comeback” campaign premiered recently and will live on social, digital and in print media in the following months.

New commercial celebrates L’Oréal Paris spokeswoman Camila Cabello’s personal comeback story.

How to inspire your teen to expand their horizons and find their passion (BPT) - With mounting pressures and expectations, the high school years can feel overwhelming - for students and parents alike. Teens grapple with questions like: Which colleges should I apply to? What should I choose as a major? What do I really want to do with my life? What if I don’t have a clue? As a parent you naturally want to give advice and steer them in the right direction, but you also know it’s a tricky balance. It’s their life, after all, as they’ll often remind you. So how can you help? Encourage them to explore different interests, with no strings attached. Look for activities beyond the usual choices. Research extracurricular programs at your school, in your community, even overseas so they can see the breadth of what’s out there. Expose them to a range of possibilities and see what they pick. Does your teen already have a clear focus? Look for innovative programs that allow them to dig even deeper in real-world settings. Or maybe your son or daughter is shy or stuck in a rut and needs a gentle nudge to try something new? It’s amazing how a change of scenery can inspire students and tap hidden talents. Over time they’ll gravitate toward one thing or another, and the journey will be rich with selfdiscovery. From local to global, there are many valuable paths that help spark new interests while building self-knowledge, confidence and 21st century skills along the way. Global clubs and activities spark interest in the world at largeMost high schools offer a range of extracurricular opportunities to get involved in a topic of interest or try out something new, from sports and theater to robotics and debate. Many offer programs with an international theme as well. After-school language clubs provide a chance to practice conversational skills in a relaxed environment while joining in cooking and other cultural activities. And bonding with other language enthusiasts inspires many to want to travel to experience different cultures first-hand! Larger high schools offer more languages, from French, Spanish and German to Mandarin, Arabic and Japanese, while teens with more limited offerings can often find regional programs a bus ride away.

Model UN is another valuable program that teaches students about the world around them, and builds confidence as well as leadership and communication skills. A new activity picked up on a whim may turn into a lifetime source of joy or even a career. If options are limited at school, branch out. Urge your teen to get involved in the local community, meet new people, and bond with others who share similar interests. They’ll see what’s out there in the bigger world while demonstrating to colleges and employers that they’re engaged beyond the standard classroom requirements. Service programs help teens gain valuable perspectiveWhen teens offer their time and talent to nonprofits and worthy causes, they gain more than just real-world experience for their college resumes. They gain maturity, perspective, practical skills and a greater appreciation for what they’ve got. Volunteering can be customized to one’s own interests, whether it means walking dogs at an animal shelter or building a website for an environmental T:9.5” group. Adventurous students can take it one step further by S:9.5”

participating in service programs abroad. Whether working to raise social awareness, lending a hand with environmental and conservation project, or mentoring underprivileged youth, teens grow exponentially during a summer far away from their usual routine. Study abroad transforms the way a teen looks at fields of study - and lifeStudying abroad is not just for college. More and more high school students are making the leap overseas for summer programs or for a semester or gap year. As many students, parents and guidance counselors have discovered, this is an opportune time to develop valuable lifelong skills, learn a new language and discover career interests in a way that is not possible in an everyday classroom environment. Perhaps the ultimate opportunity for personal growth, studying abroad also expands communication skills and helps students understand different cultures and ways of living. Not sure study abroad has crossed your teen’s mind? Surf the web together for resources and get on mailing lists for brochures. CIEE (Council on International Educational Exchange), a nonprofit that operates high school study abroad programs in more than 30 global destinations, is a good place to start. New book promotes spiritual growth and righteous living TAMPA, Fla. — While compiling lessons he taught his five children over the years, Walter Gormley decided that the lessons are things everyone should know and experience. His new spirituality book, “Return: The Way of Perfect Love” (published by Balboa Press), lists all the lessons he taught his children over the years. A guide to spiritual growth and righteous living, Gormley’s book is intended to be a path for everyone to “return to their birthright: the perfect love of the Almighty God and each other.” Promoting inclusivity, “Return” puts the focus on the idea that the life one leads is proof of the beliefs they hold and imparts teachings from a variety of religions. “Our conflicts over religion, politics, race, culture, and morality persist and there seems to be no solution,” Gormley says. “The problems continue despite growing evidence that we can all trace our ancestry back to a common source. When we begin to perceive each other by those things that we have in common: not merely biologically, but in our very essence---our souls--- we open the doors to respectful interaction.”

For nearly half a century, Gormley devoted his life to seeking, learning, and living truth. His research and participation has taken him through several religious denominations. While none had everything, each had something. Through studying, practicing, and reaching beyond the “miresome” comfort of most religions, he has been able to draw out the most important themes and share them with his five children. He continues to do so near Tampa, Florida.

ADVERSARIAL AWARENESS

The prophet writer of Isaiah shared that just as the rain and snow fulfill the purpose for which each is sent, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the thing for which I sent it. Likewise, our words do not return to us void and these same words are filled with the power to accomplish what we speak. So whether we realize it or not, we never really outperform our conversation. If we want to change our lives, we have to change the way we think of ourselves and if we want to change the way we think of ourselves, we need to change the words we say to ourselves. Life is already full of issues and challenges. Why add to them by discouraging yourself every day with negative selftalk? Beneath the surface, each of us has an inner voice on a loud speaker trying to convince us of something about ourselves. What does your self-talk sound like and what is it saying to you? Is it a blessing to you? Do you encourage you? Alternatively, do you curse and criticize yourself ? Become your own encourager, your own cheerleader. Every time you do a good job, do not just let it pass; give yourself a compliment. Every time you choose discipline over indulgence, encourage yourself; recognize how much you are helping you. When you make a mistake, learn from it and improve but do not beat yourself up and relive the mistake without getting the lesson. The help, boost, and acceptance you have been looking for might be found in the things you say to yourself! Speak life, especially to yourself! DID PROSECUTORS DESTROY EVIDENCE IN THE COSBY SEXUAL ASSAULT CASE? By Stacy M. Brown (NNPA Newswire Contributor)

Despite their knowledge of the relationship, Cosby lawyers alleged that prosecutors stood silent while Constand testified under oath that she didn’t know Jackson, and they persuaded the court to bar the defense from exploring the topic with Constand through cross-examination. Judge Steven O’Neill also denied Cosby’s lawyers’ motion to call Jackson as a witness. “The cumulative effect of the wrongdoing in this case, and the politically and emotionally charged context of this case, elevates the misconduct to a level of a constitutional violation and prosecutorial overreach depriving Cosby of any meaningful right to a fair trial,” Cosby’s attorneys wrote. “Such misconduct warrants dismissal of the charges.” In another motion, Cosby’s attorneys argued that prosecutors also have failed to prove that they brought the case within the 12-year statute of limitation and there’s no way to prove it, because they admittedly are unsure

As Montgomery County prosecutors continue to pursue a verdict in the Bill Cosby sexual assault case involving former Temple University employee Andrea Constand, lawyers for the entertainer have filed several motions, including two arguing that the case against him should be dismissed. And, while such motions are considered procedural and are rarely granted, the “Uptown Saturday Night” star has presented a compelling case for dismissal. According to court documents filed by Cosby’s lawyers, the court should dismiss all charges against Cosby because, by Montgomery County, Pennsylvania prosecutors’ own admission, they have not only failed to disclose evidence, but have also destroyed exculpatory evidence. “Specifically, the prosecution recently disclosed for the first time that, prior to the first trial in this case, a prosecutor and two detectives interviewed a critical witness, Marguerite Jackson who told them Bill Cosby’s lawyers want the judge in his sexual abuse trial to dismiss the case. Screen Time Is Here To Stay! (NAPSI)—Halle Stanford, President of Television at The Jim Henson Company and mother to two boys, ages 19 and 6, shares her views on navigating the kids’ TV landscape. As a producer at The Jim Henson Company and a mom to two boys, I have a unique perspective on screen time. I’ve also explored this issue in one of my shows, Dot. This animated preschool series created by the fabulous Randi Zuckerberg addresses how technology can enhance a kid’s everyday adventures. We were lucky to be advised by Yalda Uhls (author of Media Moms and Digital Dads) on creating a show curriculum that encourages kids and their families to be excellent digital citizens, to come up with a family media agreement, and to talk openly about screen time. My personal philosophy on this issue is simple: Viva la screen time! I encourage my kids to enjoy movies, television, videos, apps, and more. Like my hero Jim Henson, I believe in the positive transformative power of media. As a producer, my goal has always been to create television and films that enrich, educate, and entertain. So I have always encouraged my boys to love the shows and games that they are drawn to, but also Jim Henson’s Family Hub is the home to some of to discover programming that informs them on issues television’s favorite preschool stars. © Henson and ideas they are curious about. True confession: I don’t have a set amount of time he always gets, but it’s usually no longer than an hour. And we do talk about how long he’ll be watching the shows before he settles in to viewing. And when that last show starts, he gets a reminder that his screen time is almost up. Yes, there have been times when he grabs the phone or remote when screen time is over and runs around the house laughing, but I’m as quick as a cheetah. My 19-year-old is an adult and at this point in his life, I trust him to regulate his own screen time. And still, the best I can do for both my boys is to model good screen time habits myself. When we are together, I do my best to use my phone only to snap those memorable photos or answer an urgent message. And I tell them why I am taking the time to focus on my screen and not on them. I also never answer the phone during meals or playtime. But, once they’re asleep or out and about, I love having my own time to turn on my latest favorite show (hello, Outlander!). We are in a new golden age of television and I would embolden parents to find shows that will delight and inspire their kids. It will take time (because there is so much content out there), but get involved with customizing your family’s viewing experiences together— it’s FUN! (And, if it happens to be Dot., Splash and Bubbles, Dinosaur Train, Doozers, Word Party, or Julie’s Greenroom…even better!). Discover your child’s next favorite show. Visit www.
