Naperville Students Win National Science Bowl® Regional Competition, Secure Spot in National Finals in Washington, D.C. WASHINGTON, D.C. — A team of high school students from Naperville, Illinois won their regional competition for the 2018 National Science Bowl® (NSB) recently and will advance to compete in the NSB National Finals this spring in Washington, D.C., the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), who sponsors the NSB, announced. The NSB brings together thousands of middle and high school students from across the country to compete in a fast-paced question-and-answer format where they solve technical problems and answer questions on a range of science disciplines.

Rush Introduces Resolution Designating the Week of February 12 through February 16, 2018 as ‘‘Black Women’s Heart Health Awareness Week’’ WASHINGTON — U.S. Representative Bobby L. Rush (D-Ill.) introduced, H. Res. 722, a resolution supporting the designation of the week of February 12 through February 16, 2018 as “Black Women’s Heart Health Awareness Week” to raise awareness and understanding that heart disease is the number one killer of women and that it disproportionately affects black women. As the country celebrates Black History Month and American Heart Month this February, it is critical to elevate both the cultural significance of the month and the awareness of the health crisis directly impacting black women. “This is an issue that hits close to home, as I lost my beloved wife and best friend, Carolyn, to heart disease last year,” said Rush. “I am personally committed to doing what I can to help educate black women about their health risk and how to prevent this disease from impacting their lives. Black women are leading the way in our country and we must do everything we can to not only promote their successes but protect their hearts.”

For more than a decade, The ARK of St. Sabina has offered a variety of free after school programs for youth and young adults aged 6-28, serving between 70-120 participants in the Auburn-Gresham community. “The Ark” was named by Reverend Michael L. Pfleger, senior pastor of The Faith Community of Saint Sabina Roman Catholic Church and serves as a safe haven for at-risk youth. In recent years, the ARK redesigned its youth program to better cultivate the minds of community youth. “We service any youth, including 81 schools that can make it out,” Courtney Holmon, senior program director for The Ark said. “These students are our future and there aren’t too many opportunities for them. It’s about being a helping hand to our community. The whole point of these programs is to create leaders and make sure whatever profession they choose, they come back and do the same for kids after them.” The youth programs are run on Monday through Friday from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. In addition, The ARK of St. Sabina manages a high school journalism program as well as a violence prevention

group on Thursdays. Holmon said there is also a female and male mentoring program available for high school students staffed by mentors who students can openly talk to. She added if a teen hasn’t been mentored at home because mom was always working or dad may not have been around, then having a mentor is important because it provides a support system. Students need someone to teach them about dreams and goals so their perceptions can be changed to help them overcome their current challenges, she added. By mentoring the teens, workers give them, “something to look forward to.”Winter enrollment is currently open for the following programs; Music Studio, Youth Entrepreneurship Program, L.Y.R.I.C. Nicholas Smith Sworn in as New State Representative By Christopher Shuttlesworth

Nicholas Smith was recently sworn in, by Judge Freddrenna Lyle, as Illinois State Representative of the 34th District at the Pullman National Monument Site Visitor Center. Previously, Smith served as the Ninth Ward Streets and Sanitation Superintendent and as the Former President of the Roseland Heights Community Association, according to www. sixthward.us. “I can’t think of a better person to take this position than Smith because he is a public servant and you want people who represent you to be servants with servant hearts,” Judge Lyle said. “Plus, Smith lives in the community so if you see him walking down the street, feel free to check him to keep him focused and well-grounded.” After being sworn in as the new State Rep., Smith acknowledged all of his colleagues and friends who have continued to support his efforts in the community. “This job is not just representing the people in my community of the 34th District but the decisions we make in Springfield, Illinois effect the entire state,” Smith said. “So, as I look around the room at co-workers, family and friends, I know this is why we do this.” He continued to share a story about when he served with Alderman Anthony Beale. A community resident called the office to ask if Mayor Rahm Emanuel was Beale’s boss. Smith replied “No, you are.” “The voters are the boss,” Smith said. “If you don’t like what’s going on then every two or four years you have the opportunity to change it. So, spread the word to your neighbors, family and friends about the importance of voting.” He said if more people would have voted in the previous election, the State of Illinois and Chicago would not be in the

financial situation it’s in today. “The mess that’s going on in Springfield right now is because of people’s lack of voting,” Smith said. “If they voted correctly, we wouldn’t be in this mess. But I’m going to join this fight in Springfield to defend you, but we have a Mar. 20 Primary Electing coming and I want all of you to be at the polls because the only way we can make change is by voting.” As Smith was being sworn in, Judge Lyle told him that a great burden is being placed on his shoulders with much responsibility. “I want you to understand that you represent those aspirations of people that have gone on before,” Lyle told Smith. “Your ancestors could never have dreamed of this and with this burden comes great responsibility to do great things.”

Pritzker, Stratton, and Rush Release Statements Regarding Leaked FBI Tape Chicago Tribune recently released a controversial FBI wiretap which showed Illinoisans a new side of J.B. Pritzker, democratic candidate for Illinois governor. On the tapes, you can hear Pritzker talking with then-Governor Rod Blagojevich about who should be nominated to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Barack Obama, according to an article published by the Chicago Tribune Feb. 6. The phone call was recorded in late 2008 by the FBI during an investigation of Gov. Blagojevich who was later convicted of attempting to sell the Senate seat, according to a Chicago Tribune article published on Aug. 23, 2016. Pritzker suggests Secretary of State Jesse White should take the seat and says he is “the one that’s least offensive.” Pritzker tells the Governor that nominating White “covers you on the African American thing.” Pritzker also stated that White would be a good option for the empty seat because moving him would open up the Secretary of State position which he calls a “key spot” and then goes on to tell the governor “you don’t have to put an African American in that spot.” The recording can be heard on the Chicago Tribune’s website. Pritzker immediately released a public apology. “I’ve been longtime friends with Jesse White for more than 35 years. He is one of our great statesmen and one of the most respected public servants in the history of Illinois. I think now as I did then that he would have made a great United States Senator,” Pritzker stated. “Today, I want to be clear about one thing. I wasn’t my best self on that call, and I apologize for that. I regret some of the things I said and some of the things I didn’t say, but that is not what is in my heart and those are not my values.” Pritzker’s running mate, Juliana Stratton also spoke on his behalf saying, “I joined this campaign because of JB’s values, his record of helping people, and his compassion. All along, JB and I have had countless frank conversations about race, the challenges we face as a state and a country, and the path forward. He is someone who really listens and seeks to understand,” Stratton stated. Congressman Bobby Rush, who previously endorsed Chris Kennedy for governor of Illinois, released a statement on the matter saying, “It was discouraging to hear the despicable conversation between J.B. Pritzker and former Governor Rod Blagojevich, as they discuss leaders in the African-American community in such a dismissive and disrespectful manner. It was particularly jarring to listen to this audio as the country celebrates Black History Month and reflects on the historical and cultural accomplishments of our community.” “To hear these men describe the ways in which they believe they are covered, ‘on the African-American thing’ is simply outrageous. Black people are not ‘things’ nor is the black community a collection of political pawns on a chessboard to be moved around and manipulated by privileged white men. In that regard, former Illinois Senate President Emil Jones Jr. refused to accept his apology and the AfricanAmerican community deserves a more committed and sincere expressive change of heart. This type of rhetoric and thinking has no place in public discourse and should be widely condemned,” Rush stated.

GAGDC Honors Local Senior Citizens with Breakfast By Christopher Shuttlesworth

The Greater Auburn Gresham Development Corporation (GAGDC) is planning to host a Breakfast and Blues event for seniors on Feb. 24 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at Namoi & Sylvester Smith Senior Living, 8031 S. Halsted. Linda Johnson, a representative of GAGDC, said the organization has conducted the senior event twice a year since 2004 at the original space, the Thurgood Marshall Library. A live Blues band will kick off the celebration with Joey Dee and the Starliters. “We get up to 200 seniors,” said Johnson adding, “This is our opportunity to honor our seniors, not just from Auburn-Gresham, but all across Chicago and the suburbs.” She continued to say that seniors are important to the world because they’ve paved the way for younger generations. Seniors in the Auburn-Gresham community laid the foundation for families, schools and businesses, she said. As an inter-generational event, volunteers will include Chicago Cares and students from Simeon Career Academy, Leo High School and more local schools. “We want to make sure our students learn the

aspect of respect,” Johnson said. “I know we may not see a lot of this on the street, so as our students see us adults humble ourselves and serve, we’re hoping we can teach them strength.” She highlighted that the Auburn-Gresham community honors the community with African Adinkra symbols’ banners, which are visual symbols, originally created by the Akan of Ghana that represent concepts or aphorisms. “We integrate the Adinkra symbols’ meanings into things we do within the organization,” Johnson said. “In the African tradition, our seniors are our elders and through them we get enlightenment, knowledge and wisdom. So, we as adults want to teach that to our students and pass the baton.” GAGDC will close out the Breakfast and Blues event with a February funding raising campaign entitled, “GAGDC Give A Heart For Our Seniors,” to assist with programs and services offered for seniors. The campaign is designed to promote monthly giving and building on GAGDC’s love for community seniors. Chicagoans can support the campaign by donating at http://www.gagdc.org/donate.html. More Students are Going to Grad School: How are They Paying for It? (StatePoint) Career aspirations are driving more students to graduate school these days, and nearly two thirds believe an advanced degree is the new minimum standard level of education for any professional occupation. According to “How America Pays for Graduate School,” the new national study from Sallie Mae and Ipsos, an independent global market research company, nearly all grad students (95 percent) said an advanced degree is necessary to enter, advance, accelerate or remain competitive in their chosen career. Cost is less of a factor in the enrollment decision than it is at the undergraduate level, as more than eight in 10 surveyed based their enrollment decision on a school’s academic offerings, prestige, location, campus culture, or other personal consideration. However, eight in 10 grad students said they took more responsibility for paying-for-school decisions than they had for their undergraduate studies. “It is human nature to plan for what you value, and that includes graduate school. Today’s students see graduate school as their ticket to a successful and prosperous career, and most have a plan to pay for their advanced degree before they enroll,” says

year 2016-17, and more than three-fourths of them (77 percent) paid for it, at least in part, by borrowing. Funds borrowed by students covered more than half of the cost (53 percent), while money students earned, including income and savings, paid for 24 percent. Grants, fellowships, scholarships, and tuition waivers accounted for 15 percent, while eight percent of grad school costs came from funds borrowed or contributed by parents or others. The study also reveals that scholarships and grants are less available for grad students than for undergrads, accounting for just 15 percent of grad school costs. In response, Sallie Mae announced a new Bridging the Dream Scholarship for Graduate Students that will award four $20,000 scholarships in 2018. How to inspire your teen to expand their horizons and find their passion (BPT) - With mounting pressures and expectations, the high school years can feel overwhelming - for students and parents alike. Teens grapple with questions like: Which colleges should I apply to? What should I choose as a major? What do I really want to do with my life? What if I don’t have a clue? As a parent you naturally want to give advice and steer them in the right direction, but you also know it’s a tricky balance. It’s their life, after all, as they’ll often remind you. So how can you help? Encourage them to explore different interests, with no strings attached. Look for activities beyond the usual choices. Research extracurricular programs at your school, in your community, even overseas so they can see the breadth of what’s out there. Expose them to a range of possibilities and see what they pick. Does your teen already have a clear focus? Look for innovative programs that allow them to dig even deeper in real-world settings. Likewise, our words do not return to us void and these same words are filled with the power to accomplish what we speak. So whether we realize it or not, we never really outperform our conversation. If we want to change our lives, we have to change the way we think of ourselves and if we want to change the way we think of ourselves, we need to change the words we say to ourselves. Life is already full of issues and challenges. Why add to them by discouraging yourself every day with negative selftalk? Beneath the surface, each of us has an inner voice on a loud speaker trying to convince us of something about ourselves. What does your self-talk sound like and what is it saying to you? Is it a blessing to you? Do you encourage you? Alternatively, do you curse and criticize yourself ? Become your own encourager, your own cheerleader. Every time you do a good job, do not just let it pass; give yourself a compliment. Every time you choose discipline over indulgence, encourage yourself; recognize how much you are helping you. As a producer at The Jim Henson Company and a mom to two boys, I have a unique perspective on screen time. I’ve also explored this issue in one of my shows, Dot. This animated preschool series created by the fabulous Randi Zuckerberg addresses how technology can enhance a kid’s everyday adventures. We were lucky to be advised by Yalda Uhls (author of Media Moms and Digital Dads) on creating a show curriculum that encourages kids and their families to be excellent digital citizens, to come up with a family media agreement, and to talk openly about screen time. My personal philosophy on this issue is simple: Viva la screen time! I encourage my kids to enjoy movies, television, videos, apps, and more. Like my hero Jim Henson, I believe in the positive transformative power of media. As a producer, my goal has always been to create television and films that enrich, educate, and entertain. Yes, there have been times when he grabs the phone or remote when screen time is over and runs around the house laughing, but I’m as quick as a cheetah. My 19-year-old is an adult and at this point in his life, I trust him to regulate his own screen time. And still, the best I can do for both my boys is to model good screen time habits myself. When we are together, I do my best to use my phone only to snap those memorable photos or answer an urgent message. And I tell them why I am taking the time to focus on my screen and not on them. I also never answer the phone during meals or playtime. But, once they’re asleep or out and about, I love having my own time to turn on my latest favorite show (hello, Outlander!). We are in a new golden age of television and I would embolden parents to find shows that will delight and inspire their kids. It will take time (because there is so much content out there), but get involved with customizing your family’s viewing experiences together— it’s FUN!
