Minimum wage hike, pets in public housing among new changes

SPRINGFIELD – Minimum wage workers in Illinois will see a boost in their hourly pay to $12 per hour starting Jan. 1, while tenants in affordable housing units will be allowed to keep pets.

Those are just some of the more than 300 new laws that take effect in the new year.

WITH THE TOOLS NEEDED TO BUILD WEALTH AND ACHIEVE FINANCIAL STABILITY

The minimum wage increase is actually the result of a 2019 law that phases in a state minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2025. This year, it will increase by one dollar to $12 an hour.

tenants to keep pets is the result of Senate Bill 154, by Sen. Linda Holmes, D-Aurora, and Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego. It provides that tenants of multifamily housing units that are acquired, built or renovated with money from the Illinois Affordable Housing Trust Fund may keep up to two cats or one dog weighing less than 50 pounds. It applies to residents of housing units that are designated as affordable housing for low- and very-lowincome families. The bill passed both chambers in its final form on May 30 and Gov. JB Pritzker signed it into law Aug. 6.

The Illinois Legislative Black Caucus Foundation (ILBCF) is announcing an all-new financial literacy series geared towards building wealth and financial stability.

The ILBCF’S mission in this endeavor is to ensure that African American households and minorities at large are equipped with the financial literacy skills required to make informed financial decisions. But moreover, to avoid predatory financial products and services that can distract from adequately saving for retirement.

Joint ILBCF Chairwoman State Representative Carol Ammons adds “We have revised the mandate of the Caucus to further emphasize that financial literacy is a tool not only for economic stability, but also for wealth-building and lasting financial prosperity for generations to come.”

Other new laws include:

Vehicle taxes: SB58 raises the private vehicle tax, which is a sales tax paid on the purchase of vehicles, by $75 for each model year where the purchase price is less than $15,000 and by $100 for vehicles priced above that amount. However, the registration fee for trailers weighing less than 3,000 pounds will drop to $36 instead of $118.

Edward Jones Financial Services has graciously embraced the ILBCF in rolling out this program. Whether it is creating a budget, expanding savings, investing, or preparing for retirement, the Edward Jones Financial Literacy program has enhanced the efforts of

individuals to take control of their personal finances and avoid debt, fraud, or other financial concerns.

“We look forward to working with the Edward Jones Financial Fitness firm that will educate our constituents to ensure that at every stage of their lives, they can better manage their finances and build a stronger future for their families.” says ILBCF Executive Director Tiffany Hightower.

Representative Ammons states further, The ILBCF is proud to partner with the Edward Jones Financial Services Firm in establishing this much needed program for our combined legislative districts. This will be of great assistance in achieving our mission of promoting the importance of financial literacy as well as finding ways to promote better monetary management across communities. We will continue to work hard to help expand opportunities to people in hopes of achieving their dreams.”

The ILBCF has a mandate to improve the financial literacy and capability of all its constituents. In addition, the ILBCF reviews, discusses, and recommends financial literacy policies, legislation, programs, and related matters for the upward mobility of the African American community. In addition, the ILBCF will continue to collaborate with the private sector, nonprofits, community-based organizations, and faith-based groups as it relates to financial literacy.

Drug prices: SB1682 requires pharmacies to post a notice informing consumers that they may request current pharmacy retail prices at the point of sale.

During an “All-In” event Tuesday, it was announced that the Southland College Prep class of 2024 at the predominantly African American school was offered $50 million and counting in merit and need-based scholarships.

FOID card changes: HB562 enacts several changes to the Firearm Owner Identification card law. Among other things, it provides for a streamlined renewal process for FOID cards and Concealed Carry Licenses for people who voluntarily submit fingerprint records. It also allows the Illinois State Police to issue a combined FOID card and Concealed Carry License to qualified applicants, and it establishes a new Violent Crime Intelligence Task Force to take enforcement action against people with revoked FOID cards.

Southland seniors were admitted to some of the top colleges and universities in the country, including class valedictorian Knyiema Martin, 18, of Matteson who was accepted to 28 schools and has been offered more than $5 million in merit and need-based scholarship offers. Martin, who earned a 4.89 GPA on a 4.0 scale, was named a Gates Millennium Scholar, the third student to be awarded the prestigious scholarship in the school’s history. Martin is currently deciding between Columbia University, the University of California-Berkeley, Pomona College and Dartmouth College. She plans to major in psychology and become a clinical psychologist.

The Class of 2024 had to deal with a college admission process that was more stressful than usual because of problems with the rollout of a new FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form which delayed college financial aid offers, said Robert Lane, Southland’s director of college admissions.

to the appropriate school support personnel.

Dr. Davis, who is also the superintendent of Matteson School District 162, said that when she founded the school in 2010 naysayers told her that “students from our area would not be able to access the Ivy League or top schools in the country.”

Fourteen years later, not only are students being admitted to these schools, but Davis said that it is important that students are also being given the financial means to stay in school. Davis noted that the first graduating class of Southland, the Class of 2014, will be celebrating its 10th anniversary this year and that many of the alumni of that first class have gone on to graduate from college, graduate school and start careers in law, health, education and the military.

“This is what happens when what seemed impossible becomes a reality and a vision is realized,” Davis said. “This is what happens when a community’s dreams for their children are achieved.”

Collectively, the 11 graduating classes of Southland have earned more than $400 million in merit and need-based scholarships, according to Lane.

“These college admissions and the financial aid and scholarships these students have worked hard for and earned represent hope for the future of not just these students and their families, but for our communities in the south suburbs,” Lane said.

Usually, colleges are able to offer students financial aid awards by the end of March. But because of the problems with the rollout of the new form, which must be submitted if a student wants to qualify for certain loans, grants and scholarships, many students across the country do not know how much college will cost them next school year, making it difficult for high school seniors to decide where, or if, to enroll by the May 1 deadline of many schools.

Despite the FAFSA delays and challenges of navigating their high school years during a pandemic, members of the class of 2024, the school’s 11th graduating class since its founding in 2010, made remarkable achievements, according to school administrators.

United States. In June, President Joe Biden also signed a bill designating Juneteenth as a federal holiday.

Lane said that admissions to the top schools are important, but equally important is that every class member finds a school that is right for them. For example, Lane said, several seniors were accepted to all of the top 25 Historically Black Colleges and Universities including Howard, Spelman, Morehouse, Xavier University of Louisiana, and Hampton and a record number of Southland students were admitted to one of the top universities in the country, Northwestern.

ATLANTA, PRNewswire -- PROPEL, a first-of-its-kind innovation hub for two-year and four-year Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), announces the launch of a pioneering cybersecurity consortium. The PROPEL HBCU Cybersecurity Consortium (HCC), created in partnership with Southern Company, was founded on the principles of collaboration, leadership, innovation and foresight.

This Consortium not only unites academia, industry and government but more importantly serves as a nucleus for HBCUs to complement their curriculums to be more industry skill aligned and agile to the ever-evolving cybersecurity landscape.

“PROPEL’s consortium will set a benchmark for developing a future workforce that is well equipped to address and solve the cybersecurity needs of today and tomorrow,” said chairman, president and CEO of Southern Company Chris Womack. “Leveraging the insights, tools, resources and access to real-world opportunities that industry and government entities can bring to the table now will help further develop and enrich the transformative skills our future workforce must have. These skills are essential in how we continue to protect our critical infrastructure and be better prepared to face the cyber challenges ahead.”

The HCC is comprised of four pivotal elements: resource hub, professional development, accelerated learning and workforce pipeline. “The dynamic and ever-evolving cybersecurity landscape has generated a myriad of leading career opportunities that have become critical across virtually every business sector – with a mere nine percent of those individuals being Black professionals,” said PROPEL President Dr. Lisa Herring. “In partnership and collaboration with our co-founder, Southern Company, we’re cracking the code in a sector that is grossly underrepresented by diverse talent and an industry in need of a greatly expanded workforce.”

PROPEL is proud to launch HCC’s first two programs both aimed at elevating HBCU faculty and student expertise and skills in cybersecurity.

For Exquisite Finds, the NYC Spring Jewelry and Object Show Unearthed Hidden Gems from Around the World

New York, NY -- In a world where innovation and modernity often take center stage, there’s a timeless allure to the vintage and antique. Stepping into a show dedicated to these treasures is entering a realm where every piece has a story to tell, and every glance reveals a glimpse into history’s elegant past. Cue the NYC Spring Jewelry and Object Show (NYCJAOS). After a successful inaugural autumn edition, the new KIL Promotions spring show recently launched at the Metropolitan Pavilion.

Konstantinos I. Leoussis, show founder, renowned antique and vintage dealer, and bench jeweler, says, “I founded the show with a vision to reignite the passion for vintage and antique jewelry while fostering a welcoming environment for both budding collectors and seasoned enthusiasts.” Leoussis continues, “In today’s jewelry market, smaller businesses often face challenges, and many are adopting direct-to-consumer models. However, I wanted to create a space where individuals could experience the magic of vintage pieces firsthand, without intimidation. Our show is designed to be inclusive and inviting, encouraging attendees to explore, learn, and indulge in the rich history and exquisite craftsmanship of timeless treasures.”

were bridal related—to find an unusual wedding band, a pair of earrings to go with the wedding gown—which I found particularly interesting to encounter at a show. To me, it means the end consumer is more educated and has a strong desire to see all that they can before deciding on their purchases, which might be a little overwhelming, but ultimately why a show like this is so important.”

KIL Promotions’ inaugural autumn show hosted 31 exhibitors, while the recent spring edition had a bustling showcase featuring 71 exhibitors, more than doubling in size. The exponential growth in vendor participation underscores the interest in the show and its growing appeal among vintage, antique, and contemporary watch, and jewelry enthusiasts. “KIL Promotions put on an amazing show and went out of their way to bring in dealers from the West Coast and abroad, so I think it was an extraordinary opportunity for New York show goers to experience a really diverse curation of jewelry and objects,” says Alison Barry, Owner of Duvenay. “The attendees seemed less interested in trends, and more into special antiques, historical pieces, and treasure hunting one-of-a-kind finds.”

David Alvarez, General Partner of Jacob’s Diamond and Estate Jewelry, reported his team was impressed by the large crowds of mainly younger women in their 20s-30s— sophisticated shoppers, genuinely interested in antique jewels. With a focus on cultivating the next generation of collectors, KIL Promotions welcomed a diverse crowd, encouraging a range of pricing, appealing to first-time show goers and jewelry connoisseurs alike.

Renowned jewelry author, journalist collector and dealer, Beth Bernstein says, “Some visitors who were purchasing for themselves came with very specific pieces in mind, and many

Over the weekend, high energy and spirits filled the room, buzzing with over 4,800 visitors who viewed and shopped exquisite pieces, amongst fellow jewelry lovers and collectors. Contemporary designers included: KIL N.Y.C., Heavenly Vices, Erica Molinari, Circa 1700, Alex Streeter, Lily Streeter, GiGi Ferranti, Anne Baker, and K8 Jewelry. The world-leading antique, vintage, watch, and estate dealers at the show included Jewels by Grace, Duvenay, Alpha & Omega, Keyamour, Thea Grant, Spare Room Antiques, Jogani, Ishy Antiques, Lowther Antiques, Steve Fishman, Woodcliff on the Hudson, Jacob’s Diamond & Estate Jewelry, Jack Weirs & Sons, Courtville Antiques, Be Jeweled and more.

Before the show opened to the public, a VIP Early Viewing Party was held, where KIL Promotions successfully raised $3,200 in scholarship funds, to support local jewelry designers in their studies. Uplifting emerging talent, the company is dedicated to supporting talent entering the industry.

This summer, the new Tokyo Jewelry and Object Show will debut in Japan, also hosted by KIL Promotions. With customer service as a focal point of their shows, the company is committed to delivering an outstanding experience for both vendors and visitors. Ismael Khan of Ishy Antiques says, “We had an amazing time at the NYC spring show. We were so happy to see so many of our favorite dealers exhibiting alongside us and the amount of footfall was incredible. The way we are looked after is second to none, and we can’t wait for the next show!”

With offices in Brooklyn and Manhattan, KIL Promotions was established in 2023 as an antidote to the lack of diverse direct-to-consumer, jewelry-related events in New York City. The company is dedicated to creating accessible opportunities for vendors of all kinds, from all over the world, and curating a range of events spanning antique and vintage jewelry and watches, art objects, and contemporary jewelry design.

Choosing Love Over Fear: Embracing Foster Care as a Cool and Compassionate Choice

As we enter National Foster Care Awareness Month, it’s essential to shed light on the transformative power of fostering and adoption. While many of us are familiar with the concept of foster care, there’s often a lingering stigma or misconception surrounding it. Some may view foster care as a last resort or a daunting responsibility, overshadowed by fear and uncertainty. However, I’m here to challenge that narrative and urge us all to choose love over fear when it comes to fostering a child.

Fostering a child is not just an act of kindness; it’s a profound opportunity to make a lasting impact on a young life. It’s about providing stability, support, and unconditional love to children who need it most. And contrary to popular belief, foster care isn’t just for a select few with special qualifications or resources—it’s for anyone willing to open their hearts and homes.

One of the most significant barriers to fostering a child is fear—fear of the unknown, fear of attachment, fear of not being enough. But what if we reframed that fear into an opportunity for growth and connection? What if we viewed fostering as an act of courage rather than a burden? By choosing love over fear, we can break down these barriers and create a more compassionate world for children in need.

Moreover, let’s make foster care cool. Let’s celebrate the rappers, actors, athletes, and celebrities

who have spent time in foster care and gone on to achieve greatness. From Tiffany Haddish to Ice T, Pepa to Greg Louganis, Seal to Cher, Colin Kaepernick to Steve Jobs, Eddie Murphy, and many more, these individuals have defied the odds and thrived despite their challenging beginnings.

Their stories remind us that foster care isn’t a sentence—it’s a chapter in a much larger story. It’s a testament to resilience, strength, and the power of love to overcome adversity. And if they can turn their experiences into sources of inspiration and motivation, so can we.

So, let’s challenge ourselves to step out of our comfort zones and embrace foster care as a cool and compassionate choice. Let’s educate ourselves, dispel myths, and support families who choose to foster. Together, we can create a world where every child has a loving and stable home—a world where love triumphs over fear.

This National Foster Care Awareness Month, let’s choose love. Let’s choose compassion. Let’s choose foster care.

Thank you for your commitment to creating a brighter future for children in foster care.

Acclinate Empowers Black Maternal Health with AI-Powered Cultural Understanding

BIRMINGHAM, Ala., PRNewswire -- Acclinate, a pioneer in health equity through technology and community engagement, has partnered with Quilt.AI, a company at the forefront of employing artificial intelligence (AI) to understand and interpret internet data at scale to intensify its Black maternal health initiatives. With Black women in the United States facing a maternal mortality rate three times higher than that of white women, Acclinate’s efforts are more crucial than ever.

Over the past year, Acclinate’s NOWINCLUDED community platform has engaged directly with Black mothers, gathering invaluable insights through the Mommy Listening Tour, a campaign focused on better understanding the health perspectives of Black moms. The tour, which utilized digital and in-person efforts, revealed that 75% of Black mothers trust OBGYNs for reliable health information, and over 51% are willing to travel up to 10 miles for quality maternal care. These findings stress the need for accessible and culturally responsive healthcare solutions.

The NOWINCLUDED team also recently had the opportunity to hear directly from Black mothers at the Black Maternal Health Expo at Babypalooza, further enriching the company’s understanding of their experiences and needs. This face-to-face engagement has been instrumental in shaping our ongoing initiatives.

To amplify these efforts, Acclinate is leveraging additional findings from Quilt.AI’s advanced AI platform, which has been dissecting online conversations about Black maternal health, producing a comprehensive report. The report confirms that a significant 75% of online discussions highlight a pressing need for better support systems for Black mothers, while another 63% underscore a demand for more culturally competent healthcare providers. Additional insights indicate a substantial conversation around the need for mental health support, with many Black mothers expressing a lack of accessible resources to manage postpartum depression.

Tiffany Whitlow, Co-Founder and Chief Development Officer at Acclinate, remarks, “Leveraging these insights allows us to tailor our initiatives more effectively, ensuring we address the nuanced challenges Black mothers face in healthcare. Our Mommy Listening Tour and most recent listening experiences at the Black Maternal Health Expo have been invaluable, offering direct feedback from our community so we can work together to advocate for better maternal health outcomes. “

Anurag Banerjee, co-founder and chief executive officer of Quilt.AI adds, “We’re extremely excited to partner with Acclinate and contribute our AI tools to uncover meaningful health insight to support Acclinate’s mission and help drive positive impact and better serve Black women in the community.”

As Acclinate continues its efforts, the organization is poised to introduce innovative solutions and solidify its commitment to improving maternal health outcomes for Black women, ensuring that their voices are heard and their health is prioritized.

Basic Steps for Sizzling Steak

Prepare Your Cut

Taste preferences (and prices) may differ among sirloins, ribeyes, T-bones and more, but the way you prepare steaks likely won’t change much from cut to cut. You’ll want to trim the thickness down to 1/2-1 inch for proper cooking, and setting the meat out ahead of time allows it to warm to room temperature before hitting the grill. Placing a refrigerator-cool slab on hot grates works against you in two ways: first, the cold meat instantly chills your previously warm grill, and second, the inner portion of the steak will take longer to grill.

Add Some Salt

Feel free to add any spices that you prefer, but remember a good steak typically doesn’t

require fancy seasoning – a pinch of salt works just fine. Add your salt anywhere between 30 minutes to a few hours before grilling time to help retain moisture and improve flavor.

Aim for High Heat

Grilling a steak correctly actually isn’t just about maintaining a sweltering flame. A twozone fire is usually the way to go – one side of the grill should be hot (using direct heat) with the other side not quite as warm (indirect heat). This allows you to create a sear over direct heat before finishing cooking through –without burning – over indirect heat.

Sear and Slide

Speaking of searing: Cooking your steak over direct heat 1-2 minutes on each side is

normally about right for creating a proper sear. At this point, depending on the thickness of your steak, you’ll want to check for doneness. If it’s not quite to the temperature you’re looking to achieve, simply slide it over to the indirect heat for a finishing touch.

Keep in mind these general guidelines for doneness: 120-125 F is rare, 130-135 F is medium-rare, 140-145 F is medium, 150-155 F is medium-well and 160-175 F is well done.

Let Rest

Finally, as hungry as you may be at this point, resting steaks is an important last step before diving in. Giving your steaks 5-10 minutes (foil or no foil) allows flavors to redistribute and moisture to be retained in the meat. Find more cooking tips and recipes at Culinary.net. (Culinary.net) A sizzling steak is a surefire sound of summer, and the flavors achieved from one that’s perfectly grilled are hard to match. Before you fire up your grill, consider these five basics for cooking a chef-worthy steak:

In-Demand Careers Every New College Grad Should Know About

(StatePoint) So you’ve recently graduated college. The summer ahead is the perfect time to consider a career as a financial planner. At a time when new research

reveals that more than half of four-year college graduates are underemployed a year after they graduate, the financial planning industry is booming.

To give yourself a competitive edge when you’re just starting out, consider earning your CFP® certification. CFP® certification is the standard in

financial planning and paves the way for an exceptional career. Here’s what you need to know about a career as a financial advisor with CFP® certification, also known as a CFP® professional:

• You can gain financial stability: When you’re young, it’s important to pay down any student debt and begin saving for the future as early as possible. That’s difficult to do in industries with low starting wages. While financial planning salaries vary, you can expect to earn $50-70K as a starting point. And there’s a lot of room for growth — experienced financial advisors earn $192,000 on average.

• You’ll enjoy job security: Many industries are experiencing widespread layoffs and instability, but financial planning is a career path offering job security and growth. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the demand for financial advisors will grow quickly, at a rate of 13% through 2032.

• You’ll use a wide range of skills: Financial planning isn’t just numbers and math. The job requires great communication skills and a high level of emotional intelligence to guide clients through the psychology behind their money management.

• You can forge your own path: Financial advising is not a one-size-fits-all career path. You can choose to specialize in a particular area of finance or take a holistic approach to your clients’ needs. Where you work is also up to you — you might work at a nationally known financial services firm, a small

local firm or even a bank or credit union. Because of the commitment to professional excellence and high ethical standards it demonstrates, gaining your CFP® certification will unlock even more career opportunities. Many CFP® professionals even start their own business early in their careers.

• You’ll be helping others: CFP® professionals build trusted relationships with their clients, helping people achieve their life goals, whether that’s buying a home, paying for their children’s college educations or preparing for retirement.

• You can design your own schedule: After four years of scheduling classes to suit your needs, the idea of rigid working hours may not be appealing. Fortunately, financial advising can come with scheduling flexibility and a good work-life balance.

ship cycles a year that align with the exams offered. Additionally, the CFP Board’s Career Center can help you find your footing after you get certified. For more information about becoming a financial planner, visit CFP.net.

• You’ll find support along the way: As you work toward CFP® certification, you’ll have many opportunities for ongoing support. An online candidate forum offers opportunities to connect with others on their path to certification. Other resources include a progress tracker, exam preparation tools, financial aid and three mentor-

As you spend the summer months looking back on and celebrating all your hard work over the last four years, don’t forget to make an investment in your future. Pursuing CFP® certification can lead to a rewarding, profitable career as a financial planner.
