SPRINGFIELD – Minimum wage workers in Illinois will see a boost in their hourly pay to $12 per hour starting Jan. 1, while tenants in affordable housing units will be allowed to keep pets.
Those are just some of the more than 300 new laws that take effect in the new year.
The minimum wage increase is actually the result of a 2019 law that phases in a state minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2025. This year, it will increase by one dollar to $12 an hour.
tenants to keep pets is the result of Senate Bill 154, by Sen. Linda Holmes, D-Aurora, and Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego. It provides that tenants of multifamily housing units that are acquired, built or renovated with money from the Illinois Affordable Housing Trust Fund may keep up to two cats or one dog weighing less than 50 pounds. It applies to residents of housing units that are designated as affordable housing for low- and very-lowincome families. The bill passed both chambers in its final form on May 30 and Gov. JB Pritzker signed it into law Aug. 6. Other new laws include:
Many are called but few are chosen. That is the line in which many described 18-year-old Harvard bound freshman Lorin Wright of Homewood, Illinois. The Homewood-Flossmoor High School Valedictorian has received a full four-year scholarship to the Rolls Royce of all Ivy League Institutions, Harvard University.
Lorin credits her mother, Monica Wright, for her undying support in Lorin’s quest to obtain a Mechanical Engineering degree from the prestigious Institution.
“My mother has never wavered in her full support of my sister and me. She has instilled all the necessary life skills and love to ensure that we have all the necessary requirements for success in life. “says Harvard bound Lorin Wright.
Rich Township Supervisor Calvin Jordan recognized the remarkable talents of Lorin and felt compelled to offer his assistance to ensure that students such as Lorin receive community support.
While a student at H-F , Lorin was an instrumental part of the International Student Exchange program where she had continuous dialogue with students from El Salvador. It was this unique engagement that propelled her to have a fondness for international affairs.
Lorin’s mission to obtain a mechanical engineering degree is the prelude for her true future ambitions of earning a master’s degree in Economics and Aerospace from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.). From there she desires to work in satellite technology, rockets, robotics, and astronomy.
Lorin credits Homewood Flossmoor High School and the amazing counselors at the school who gave her tremendous academic and career planning support during her four years at the immensely popular high school. She finished her high school career with an overall GPA of 4.02 and a weighted GPA of 6.02. She is fluid in Spanish and maintained a steady presence in the National Honor Society.

“ As community leaders it is imperative that we put a spotlight on students who achieve at the highest level. There are so many Ivy League worthy students in the southland. Lorin is joining an elite group of past graduates from the southland who have quietly excelled to some of the top universities in the world. However, Lorin will represent a new breed in which will advocate and push for future graduates to stride for excellence in their respective academics.” says Supervisor Jordan.
Vehicle taxes: SB58 raises the private vehicle tax, which is a sales tax paid on the purchase of vehicles, by $75 for each model year where the purchase price is less than $15,000 and by $100 for vehicles priced above that amount. However, the registration fee for trailers weighing less than 3,000 pounds will drop to $36 instead of $118.
Lorin further adds, “My mother is the most selfless and amazing person that I will ever know. Her strong work ethic was so contagious for my sister Tori and I. Tori has been spectacular in her support of me as a sister. She is a Junior at DePaul University and is performing extremely well. I am equally as proud of her as she is of me. But our mother’s blood strolls heavily within our veins and her spirit is secured in all our combined success.”

COOK COUNTY, Ill. -- Four policy resolutions introduced by 6th District Cook County Commissioner Donna Miller were adopted as full policy resolutions at the National Association of Counties (NACo) conference. The conference, held this year in Tampa, Florida, brings together nearly 2,000 elected and appointed county officials to focus on federal policy issues that impact counties and their residents. Commissioner Miller’s four resolutions focused on maternal health, environmental justice, social media safety and CPR/AED trainings.
“I’m honored to be able to raise awareness of some of the most pressing issues facing Cook County and ensure county officials across the country are working to address these crucial matters. I’m thrilled to see these four resolutions be adopted as full Policy Resolutions at NACo this year,” said Cook County Commissioner Donna Miller. “During my time in office, I’ve dedicated my work to advocating for increased awareness of cardiovascular health, accessible doula services, social media safety and environmental justice, and I’m glad to receive this recognition at the national level.”

Both the CPR/AED and the Justice40 resolutions first passed at the 2023 NACo conference, and were adopted again for the upcoming year.
Commissioner Miller also introduced two interim resolutions that were first addressed at the 2024 NACo February Legislative Conference in Washington DC, including the Proposed Resolution in Support of Federal Funding for Social Media Safety Education and Training, which calls for the federal government to assist counties in educating youth on safe social media usage and its potential dangers, as well as parental outreach and support. The other, Proposed Resolution in Support of Federal Funding for Doula and Social Support Services Training, advocates for federal funds to go towards the implementation of doula services with the goal of addressing maternal mortality rates, which have historically been higher than the national average and disproportionately affect mothers of color. In recent years, Commissioner Miller has led efforts to improve maternal healthcare in Cook County by supporting doulas and raising awareness on the disparities in care.

With more than $140 million raised since its founding in 2017, the Action Fund is the largest resource dedicated to the preservation of African American historic places.
“The National Grant Program represents the Action Fund’s enduring commitment to telling the full American story - one that makes room for Black resilience, creativity, and achievement,” said Brent Leggs, Executive Director of the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund. “History is crucial to our nation’s understanding of where we’ve come from, who we are today, and how we envision our future. In addition to the Mellon Foundation, the Action Fund is grateful for the generous contributions of the Ford Foundation and the Robert D. L. Gardiner Foundation to the National Grant Program.
This year’s awardees include the second round of Conserving Black Modernism grants, a program designed to protect and promote the work of African American architects. These sites will receive $1.2 million in preservation funding through the Action Fund with support from the Getty Foundation.

Michael Jordan and Jordan Brand Invest Over $8 Million in Black Community Commitment Grants
(Black PR Wire) Michael Jordan and the Jordan Brand are announcing over $8 million in grants to 37 organizations through their Black Community Commitment (BCC). Created in 2020, the Jordan Black Community Commitment — a joint and equal 10-year, $100 million initiative of Michael Jordan and Jordan Brand — is focused on leading sustainable change to impact the fight against systemic racism and create more equitable futures for Black Americans.
Aligned across the BCC’s four key pillars (education, economic justice, narrative change and social justice), the most recent grants were distributed to 14 nonprofit institutional grantees and 23 grassroots organizations across the country leading solutions in their cities through the open-call Community Grants Program, which is inspired by the power of local decisions to create systemic change.
“The Jordan Brand has a unique and distinct role to play in continuing to elevate Black culture and Black communities,” says Sarah Mensah, Jordan Brand President. “It’s why we are so committed to partnering closely with organizations who are boldly and intentionally leading the change to create a more equitable future for Black Americans. We are privileged to support these organizations in their inspiring work.”
In order to be eligible for a one-year grant through the Community Grants Program, grassroots 501(c)(3) organizations must have an operating budget of less than $3 million and share a tie to one of the BCC’s four key pillars. BET MUSIC NAMES RISING COUNTRY SENSATION TANNER ADELL AS THE ‘BET AMPLIFIED’ PRESENTED BY NISSAN ARTIST FOR JULY
(Black PR Wire) New York, NY – BET Music and Nissan are teaming up to shine a spotlight on rising Black stars in the music world, and they’re kicking things off with none other than the dynamic Cali-bred Country sensation, Tanner Adell. Fresh off of an electrifying debut performance on Nissan’s BET Amplified stage during Culture’s Biggest Night, BET Awards 2024, Tanner Adell also takes the BET Amplified Artist of the Month crown this July, bringing her fresh, unapologetic take on Country music to the forefront.
Tanner Adell burst onto the scene last year with her debut mixtape Buckle Bunny, earning major props from The New York Times, NPR, Billboard, MusicRow, and more. With hits like “I Hate Texas,” where she spills the tea on a messy breakup, to viral favorites like “Buckle Bunny,” Tanner’s got a knack for mixing raw honesty with infectious beats. Her unique sound is set to take her straight to stardom, and BET and Nissan are here for it.
Tanner’s roots are as diverse as her sound. From summers in Wyoming learning to drive four-wheelers and cars at a young age, to belting out Phantom of the Opera, her childhood was a blend of wild freedom and deep musical passion. And, Tanner’s humble beginnings have cultivated an artist whose musical prowess has taken her from the country all the way to Cowboy Carter, receiving the ultimate cosign singing on Beyonce’s blockbuster album of 2024.
BET Socials, and BET’s Official YouTube Page. Previous BET Amplified artists include 41, Ambré, Armani White, Asake, Big Boss Vette, BossMan Dlow, Coco Jones, Connie Diiamond, Fridayy, HDBeenDope, Kaliii, Lady London, Lakeyah, Larry June, Lola Brooke, Maiya The Don, October London, Skilla Baby, That Mexican OT and more!
Tanner Adell can now add BET Amplified Artists to her list of accolades. And, what better way to celebrate than performing on the BET Amplified stage on Culture’s biggest night, BET Awards 2024? Recently signed to Atlanta-based label LVRN, Tanner Adell is poised to continue taking her country roots outside the walls of Nashville and onto the world stage.
As a BET Amplified artist, Tanner Adell will receive BET Music’s support across multiple BET campaigns and platforms, including BET, BET Her, BET Jams, BET Soul, BET.com,
Tanner Adell is here to unapologetically pave her own lane in Country music. Brought up between the coast of Manhattan Beach, California and the rustic charm of Star Valley, Wyoming, the songstress lived a free-spirited childhood in the country, complete with cowboy boots and rodeos. Weaving the tales of her upbringing through her musical storytelling, Tanner’s lyricism keeps its roots in Country while infusing an addictive blend of pop vocals and hip-hop beats. Tanner spills out energetic tunes and honest ballads that draw upon her personal narrative as a biracial woman embracing the truest version of herself. Hear Tanner reclaim the power back for the girls with her July 2023 debut mixtape, Buckle Bunny, a first-ofits-kind in the Country genre, which earned praise from The New York Times, NPR, Billboard, MusicRow and more. As fans continue to discover and rave over Tanner’s unique style through her Buckle Bunny mixtape, she continues to have a huge 2024 of new music and touring while she graces the stage at some of the biggest domestic and international festivals including Faster Horses and Golden Sky, already checking off C2C, Stagecoach and Hangout Festival. Tanner continues to keep fans on the edge of their seat, pushing the genre boundaries yet again in the forthcoming pop-infused get-over-you anthem, “Whiskey Blues,” Twisters soundtrack feature “Too Easy,” and summer bop “Cowboy Break My Heart,” out now. She made her TV performance debut on the Jennifer Hudson Show earlier this year and most recently performed on the 2024 BET Awards. The rising star promises to keep reimagining music with unbridled innovation while making her mark on Music City and beyond.

Olickal-Backed Reform Offers Pathway to Opportunity for Rehabilitated Probation Participants
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Kevin Olickal, D-Skokie, is working to make the justice system smarter and fairer with a new law that will help rehabilitate individuals after first-time and low-level offenses by allowing those who successfully complete probation to avoid the mark of a serious criminal record.
“This piece of legislation is crucial to allow Illinoisians participating in special probation programs to obtain and keep a steady job, afford housing for themselves and their family members, and have access to other opportunities that make our state safer and more equitable,” said Olickal. “The current law is contradictory and unclear, which leads to many of these folks being denied employment and affordable housing. We’re fixing this issue by making it crystal clear that those who participate in these second-chance programs are not misinterpreted as convicted felons.”
Olickal introduced House Bill 5285 during the spring session to ensure that system-involved individuals who successfully complete the terms of court-ordered probation programs for certain non-violent drug and gun possession cases are not branded as convicted criminals. This change will expand access to employment and housing opportunities that may have otherwise been denied to them, while also encouraging people with eligible cases to participate in diversion and treatment programs.
Governor JB Pritzker signed Olickal’s House Bill 5285 into law on Friday, July 19.
“People who participate in these second-chance programs are showing their desire to build better lives, but their background checks misinterpret them as convicted felons and isolate them from equal opportunities,” said Olickal. “I’m pleased to see the governor sign this bill into law so we can turn this on its head, right our wrongs, so that more people can benefit from special probation programs.”
