Chicago, Ill. -- Chicago State University (CSU) is pleased to announce the appointment of Sonja Feist-Price, Ph.D., Rh.D., as Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs.
Provost Feist-Price will lead the university’s eight academic areas, which consist of the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business, College of Education, College of Health Sciences and Pharmacy, Honors College, School of Pharmacy, First Year Experience, and Nontraditional Programs, offering nearly 60 degree and certificate programs.

Dr. Feist-Price earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from McNeese State University, a Master of Science in Rehabilitation Counseling Psychology from Southern University, a Doctorate in Rehabilitation Research & Education from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, and a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Kentucky. “It really has blossomed into a citywide effort to reclaim our neighborhoods for working class families,” said Whittney Smith, Deputy Director and Counsel for the Lawndale Christian Development Corporation. She added that by partnering with committed practitioners, LCDC is ensuring that working class folks can stay in Chicago and remain in their neighborhoods.
The Lawndale Christian Development Corporation was founded in 1987, with a mission to revitalize North Lawndale through redevelopment initiatives, employment and education programs. It currently manages 220 units of affordable rental housing and 130 residential properties have been constructed.
The Lawndale Christian Development Corporation is also building and incubating cooperative businesses, which is another way they are anchoring residents. In addition to residents having beautiful homes, they can also have careers and ownership in businesses.
“If you come to North Lawndale and you look at Ogden. You think how did all this happen? And the saying that comes to my mind is that things take longer than you ever thought they would, so they happen faster than you ever thought they could. That’s the story of North Lawndale,” she said.
There is a North Lawndale Homeowners Association that has grown to 250 people. It is giving residents the opportunity to talk about their needs and concerns, then working to push those concerns and needs forward. With the association, LCDC was able to push for the city of Chicago and the Chicago Public Library to invest $2.2 million in the local library. It took it from a dilapidated building to a building that the community could be proud of.

“Generational wealth building is about more than just passing on legacy, it’s also about building, in real time, businesses that will serve, the population that is there now,” Smith said.
Collaborating with community residents and other community organizations has been one of The Lawndale Christian Development Corporations’ strengths. Richard Townsell, Executive Director of LCDC, has relationships with people across the city of Chicago. Smith said that collaborative piece has been what ensured that LCDC stayed on the forefront of what is wanted and desired in the community. Collaborating with residents has resulted in fresh ideas, the opportunity to scale, do it at a higher level and at pace.
Through uplifting community leaders and ideas on how to move the community forward, the Lawndale Christian Development Corporation has been able to bring people to its organization and when they move on, they go on to do great things.
Smith talked about the Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy Apartments, located at 1550 S. Hamlin, it is one of many economic development initiatives that the organization is most proud of. The state-of-the-art, 45unit affordable rental building which has green space is on the block where Dr. King lived when he came to Chicago in 1966. It is one of the first modern, new development buildings in the neighborhood. The building houses The Soul Food Lounge, along with other amenities and resources.
“You step inside of it, and you are just transported. You are in a space of peace … it feels like Black love, it feels like the South in a space, it’s just warm and inviting,” Smith said.

CHICAGO — Mayor Brandon Johnson and the Chicago Department of Housing (DOH) are proud to announce securing an additional $5 million for 2024 Flood Assistance Repair Program (FARP) designed to assist homeowners impacted by severe flooding experienced in July 2023. The initiative underscores the city’s commitment to providing essential support and resources to its residents, particularly the most vulnerable, and will be used in addition to the $172 million FEMA funding that has already been allocated.

Alzheimer’s is a disease that impacts the entire family, including children and teens. When a loved one is diagnosed, young people might have questions about what is happening. It’s essential to address these questions openly and honestly and share with them the changes the disease might bring, both now and in the future.
Funding and Support: The program will provide eligible homeowners with up to $25,000 each for the remediation and restoration of health and safety issues confined to their basements. This support will be provided to households that have a total income at or below the Area Median Income (AMI) of 100%.
Selection Process: There will be no application process, as DOH is working with community leaders and organizations to ensure that aid reaches those most in need without requiring a separate intake or registration process.

The 2024 FARP aims to support up to 200 homeowners, primarily seniors, residing in single-family or one-to-two-unit properties on the West Side of Chicago, where homes suffered significant damage from torrential rains in July 2023, resulting in eight inches of rainfall within 12 hours, causing widespread flooding and substantial damage to basements.

Created in 2020, the Jordan Black Community Commitment — a joint and equal 10-year, $100 million initiative of Michael Jordan and Jordan Brand — is focused on leading sustainable change to impact the fight against systemic racism and create more equitable futures for Black Americans.
Aligned across the BCC’s four key pillars (education, economic justice, narrative change and social justice), the most recent grants were distributed to 14 nonprofit institutional grantees and 23 grassroots organizations across the country leading solutions in their cities through the open-call Community Grants Program, which is inspired by the power of local decisions to create systemic change.

The decision of President Biden to step down and pass the torch to Vice President Harris and the outpouring of support in over 2 million dollars in donations in fortyeight hours, along with more than 2500 pledged delegates, commitments from members of the Congress as well as Governors of several states and the support of grassroots people from all walks of life, gives new meaning to the statement: There is nothing like an idea whose time has come. Clearly America has an opportunity for a truly historic period. Now that Vice President Harris is making good on her promise “to earn the nomination”, it's up to the rest of us to carry out the agenda that will go with that Presidency.
The agenda includes not only getting Vice President Harris elected, not because she is a woman or because she is Black, but because she is qualified and equipped to do the job. Our “Project 2025” is to give her a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate so that she will have in place lawmakers that can pass the needed legislation to overcome the agendas of the MAGA Republicans committed to blocking her efforts. We can make the difference by voting into office Democrats in each and every state that has a Congressional race. We must be in control of the House of Representatives when the Electoral College votes are counted in January. A failure to regain the
House of Representatives will allow the Republican control under Mike Johnson to block or delay the certification necessary for the transition of power to Harris as President. Every opportunity to elect a Democrat in all 50 states is crucial. Only “we the people” getting out the vote, can overcome the planned destruction of democracy as we know it.
We must monitor the selection of Electoral College Delegates. We must monitor state efforts to reduce voting opportunities by changing polling sites and removing or reducing ballot boxes. We must ensure we have Voter Registration Officials to carry out the elections. If for some reason we can’t vote, then we must work to register those who can. We must encourage the use of absentee ballots, contact friends and relatives in other states and ensure that they both register and vote. We must make it unacceptable for those around us to tell us they are not going to vote or that their vote won’t count when we know people died to ensure that we have the right to vote.
In Conclusion, our agenda is to not only support the election of Kamala Harris as President of the United States, but to prepare the way for her to have a successful Presidency, and to remove those in office who have already demonstrated a commitment to trampling on the oath of Office they took “to Defend the Constitution of the United States, so Help Them God.”
The rest of the agenda is up to us both now, and all campaign challenges that stand to block our President To Be.
Project 2025: The Blueprint for America’s Democratic Demise

Trump is “America’s Hitler.”
Those aren’t my words. They’re the words of Donald Trump’s running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance. That’s what he and many others used to say about Trump before they succumbed to his influence. Now, they’re proclaiming their loyalty by bowing down and kissing the ring of an insurrection inciter, a racist, a sex predator, a twice-impeached, four-time indicted, now convicted felon, and former disgrace of a President.
Recently, the Republicans held their national convention. Despite the delusional and deranged policies Trump has been shoving down our throats, he was met with thunderous applause.
Let me paint a picture of a second Trump term, according to MAGA Republicans and Trump’s closest cronies.
Journalist and historian Anne Applebaum aptly noted, “Often, for autocrats, the second time in power is worst.” That’s a chillingly accurate description of what we’d face with Trump, especially with the tyrannical policies in Project 2025.
If you haven’t heard, Project 2025 is a 920-page blueprint for a second Trump term, straight out of a dystopian novel. It’s packed with the horrifying policies MAGA Republicans dream of imposing.
It’s the MAGA Republicans’ plan to take control of this country and our lives.
It demolishes checks and balances, tramples personal liberties, and outlines a Trump power grab ripped from a dictator’s playbook.
Trump wants to fire up to 1 million people in the federal government and replace them with a bunch of extreme MAGA Republicans who would do Trump’s bidding instead of the American people and the Constitution.
And let’s talk about your wallet because you can forget about that with Project 2025. MAGA Republicans want to increase taxes on the middle class, gut social security for young Americans, slash Medicare, let employers stop paying overtime, and
They also aim to obliterate the Department of Education and eliminate the Head Start program. As a former Head Start educator and school principal, I find this vile and inexcusable.
Project 2025 also wants students in public high schools to take a military entrance exam in an effort to draft them into the military. However, it leaves private school kids untouched.
The cherry on top? They’re hell-bent on banning abortion and restricting access to birth control and Plan B. As someone who knew life before Roe v. Wade and almost died from a stillbirth, we simply cannot go back.
Now, Trump knows this plan is insane and unpopular, and has recently tried to distance himself from Project 2025, claiming he knows nothing about it.
But Project 2025 is crawling with former Trump officials and cabinet members.
All MAGA Republicans are trying to do now is lie about Project 2025 so they can win the election and begin to implement this draconian plan—just like authoritarians in other countries did when trying to grab onto power. But we cannot ignore their true vile intentions.
So, what’s next?
Trump used his first term to destroy the guardrails of democracy, stack the courts with loyalists, and make the truth seem like “fake news.”
So, while our democracy survived a first Trump term, it won’t survive a second one.
Don’t take my word for it. Trump said he will become “a dictator on day one.” This isn’t just a scare tactic by Democrats; it’s simply what Trump has already told us will happen if he wins. So, believe him when he says he’ll be a dictator.
There is simply too much at stake to focus on anything other than the choice we have in this election: democracy or dictatorship. I’m choosing democracy every day.

(StatePoint) Amid technology advances enabling scammers to commit fraud, elders and their loved ones need to stay informed.
Typically, elder scams involve the transfer of money to a stranger or imposter for a promised benefit or good. In 2023, banks reported more than $27 billion in suspicious activity related to elder scams, according to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, and reports filed by the public to the Federal Bureau of Investigation indicated an average loss of more than $33,000 per case. And these numbers may be conservative, as elder fraud cases may be underreported.

• Tech Support. Someone will claim they need to remotely access the victim’s computer to fix a software problem, then use that access to steal personal or financial information.
• Government Imposter. The fraudster may tell the victim they owe a debt that must be paid immediately or face arrest, asset seizure or termination of benefits.
• Grandparent. An elaborate story is given by phone and sometimes involves a voice print of an actual grandchild, claiming a loved one is in trouble and needs money to be protected.
Scams That Offer Something Too Good to Be True:
• Investment. The scammer makes claims of a high-return investment to trick the victim into giving them money, often asking to be paid in an unconventional way, like cryptocurrency, where there’s little to no chance of recovering the funds.
• Romance. The scammer develops a fake identity and creates the illusion of a romantic relationship to manipulate or steal from the victim.
• Lottery/Sweepstakes. Scammers make contact by phone or mail to tell the victim they’ve won the lottery or a sweepstakes but claim the elder has to remit a processing fee before they can get their prize.
Take Protective Measures and Stay Alert
The most effective way of preventing fraud is to pause when being rushed and take time to verify the legitimacy of both the person making contact and their claims. To reduce the odds of your voice being cloned, experts suggest exercising caution when speaking on the phone with strangers.
