GYRLS IN THE H.O.O.D FOUNDATION HOSTS INAUGURAL LET IT FLOW FESTIVAL TO COMBAT PERIOD POVERTY

Chicago, Ill. -– Gyrls In The H.O.O.D Foundation is thrilled to announce the inaugural “Let It Flow Festival”, an empowering event aimed at raising awareness about period poverty, normalizing conversations around menstruation, and providing essential menstrual products to girls in need. The festival will take place from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 31, at 605 E. 71st.

The “Let It Flow Festival” will feature interactive booths, hands-on workshops, live entertainment, and a special “Ask the Doctor” session where attendees can get expert advice on menstrual health. Attendees will also have the opportunity to receive free menstrual products and engage with community healthcare providers.

“We believe that no girl should have to miss out on school, work, or life events because of her period. The Let It Flow Festival is our way of fighting stigma and creating a supportive community where menstrual health is normalized and every girl has access to the products she needs heading back to school” said Chez Smith, Founder of Gyrls In The H.O.O.D Foundation.

Everyone is invited to come, experience and celebrate our West African roots and culture with entertainment by West Side musicians, dancers, artists, shops with unique crafts, and fine food from local vendors at the 4th annual Ghan-Again Festival, in the Austin neighborhood. The festival will take place on Saturday, September 14th from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Austin Town Hall Park, 5610 W. Lake St.

The festival is named “Ghan-Again,” in honor of CAYTA (Chicago Austin Youth Travel Adventures), the non-profit arm of Gone Again Travel & Tours. This is the only Black-owned brick and mortar travel agency in Chicago, located in the Austin neighborhood and founded by long time Austin resident Crystal Dyer. The event opens at 10 a.m. with craft vendors offering wares at Austin Town Hall.

This festival is a key part of our annual fundraising efforts to provide these transformative experiences for young people.

CAYTA, a nonprofit promoting local youth travel, takes young people to Ghana in early June yearly. Chicago Avenue travel agent Crystal Dyer, who traces part of her lineage to the West African country, organized the nonprofit to give youth some alternative visions after her grandson was killed in street violence in 2011.

CAYTA’s mission is to tackle the epidemic of violence in our community by using our expertise in world travel to expand and enrich the minds and self-esteem of our at-risk-youth.

Mobile Makers’ Impact Recognized by LISC Chicago

Mobile Makers was recently awarded the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Community Design Impact Award at the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) and the Chicago 30th Annual Chicago Neighborhood Development Awards (CNDA). The impact award is given to recognize impactful work and efforts to make the world a more equitable place.

Bird-Murphy knew she loved architecture, but wanted to practice it in a way that felt meaningful and safe. She went to graduate school and her thesis was what is now Mobile Makers. She incorporated Mobile Makers in 2017.

Mobile Makers started out as youth-centered art and design programs that took place in schools. Students would participate in design activities and projects during school hours in their classrooms. In 2020, Mobile Makers completed the conversion of a United States Postal Service van, which went around the South and West sides and provided programs. Recently, the Mobile Makers completed work on an almost 2,000 square foot permanent space that will have year round programming. It is located in Humboldt Park at 1757 N. Kimball, and will be fully open this Fall. The programs are for young people ages 8-18 years old.

“We’ll keep doing pop-ups and going to schools, but the permanent space is a really huge deal and it’s something that we’ve been trying to get done for years,” she said.

Bird-Murphy said it felt really great to have Mobile Makers honored with the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Community Design Impact Award. While over the years, Mobile Makers has received awards for its work, this award also has a monetary component, which makes a difference. Bird-Murphy said financing a nonprofit can sometimes be the most difficult part of having that kind of organization.

“Having both the recognition at this level, but also the funding attached to it, just makes my life easier. It makes it easier for us to keep our programs free,” she said.

Bird-Murphy also acknowledged that it feels special, because being recognized at the CNDA Awards is a huge honor. She also hopes with the recognition from the award, it will bring awareness to the public about

Bird-Murphy is really excited to see the young people come into the Mobile Makers space. She wants it to be a safe space for them. She can’t wait to see the students who started the program at the age of 8 and then to see them graduate at the age of 18.

“My biggest thing is I want young people to know that they can come to this space. It’s supposed to be a resource and a fun, safe, place to be, if you’re in between school and home or it’s the weekend … it’s a place that young people can just hang out, even if they’re not in a program,” she said.

For Bird-Murphy, it’s about the young people in the program building life skills that they can take with them and feel more confident and successful.

Gov. Pritzker Signs Bill Eliminating State Grocery Tax

CHICAGO — Governor JB Pritzker signed into law HB3144, the local government tax omnibus bill that eliminates the state tax on grocery items. The 1% state tax is repealed across all of Illinois, although local governments have the option of imposing the tax on a local basis by ordinance.

“Even with inflation cooling off every dollar counts, so I’m proud we’re doing what we can to make trips to the grocery store a little easier,” said Governor Pritzker. “It’s one more important part of lifting the burden on Illinois families. Establishing a child tax credit, eliminating medical debt, lowering the cost of healthcare, making college more affordable, bringing quality childcare closer to home so moms and dads can go to work — these are not esoteric policy proposals but actually do lift burdens

everyday Illinoisans face.”

Governor Pritzker has made tax relief for working families a major priority for his administration. In 2022, the highest inflationary year since the 1980’s, the Governor worked with the General Assembly to suspend the state grocery tax for the fiscal year. The Governor also supported property tax rebates and direct payments for Illinois filers.

The local business omnibus bill also legislates several other municipal tax code rules and regulations, including prepaid wireless surcharges and a Hotel Operators’ Occupation Tax. The 1% tax applies to grocery items intended to be consumed off-premises. Illinois was previously one of only 11 other states to tax groceries. The tax cut will take effect January 1st, 2026.

GREEN LINE STATION AT DAMEN AND LAKE

CHICAGO – Mayor Brandon Johnson joined 27th Ward Alderman Walter Burnett, Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) President Dorval R. Carter, Jr., Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) Commissioner Tom Carney and Near West Side stakeholders to announce the re-opening of the new CTA Damen Green Line station at Lake Street and Damen Avenue. The state-of-the-art station addresses a longstanding need for improved transit options on the Near West Side that benefits residents, supports local growth and job creation in the Kinzie Industrial Corridor, and accommodates large crowds attending events at the nearby United Center.

“This new station is a transformational achievement for our City,” said Mayor Brandon Johnson. “The

long-awaited Damen Green Line on the Near West Side of Chicago will have a multiplying effect on this neighborhood, attracting future investments for a vibrant hub of multiuse developments.”

The new Damen Green Line station fills a 1.5-mile service gap between Ashland and California stops, restoring rail service to the neighborhood for the first time since the original station was closed at this location in 1948.

The station serves the Kinzie Industrial Corridor, the United Center, Malcolm X College, and the surrounding residential area on the growing Near West Side. This includes the Chicago Housing Authority’s Westhaven Park IID, a $50 million, equitable transit-oriented development (eTOD) project adding 96 mixed-income apartments in the community.

The $80 million TIF-funded project was administered by CDOT in close collaboration with the CTA. The construction contractor was F.H. Paschen. The station was designed by Perkins&Will, a Chicago-based global architecture and design firm known for innovative transit station projects from British Columbia to Chongqing City, China.

Station materials and design elements were chosen and arranged to create an intuitive user experience and to allow for a long-lasting transit facility with low-maintenance requirements. A grand stair and escalator, visible through the transparent glass façade, guide passengers to the platform level. A glass bridge connects the inbound and outbound train platforms, offering spectacular views of the Chicago skyline and orienting visitors to neighborhood destinations and attractions. The bridge’s visible structure references Chicago’s iconic steel bridges.

The new station also features a large mural by the noted artist, Folayemi Wilson, that highlights the rich history of various ethnic groups on the Near West Side. The mural depicts a scene on the prairie with images of young people taken from local photographic archives peering towards the horizon and imagining their future. Wilson was commissioned for the work by the City’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE). The CTA includes artwork in its new stations to not only further enhance the space, but also create a connection with the surrounding community and inspire those who travel through the facility.

On Walk day, we’ll start with the poignant Promise Garden ceremony—a mission-focused experience that signifies our solidarity in the fight against Alzheimer’s. During the ceremony, walkers will carry flowers of various colors, each representing their personal connection to the disease. Afterward, participants will enjoy a beautiful walk along the lake, passing through the Soldier Field Concourse, and returning to the Southeast Lawn for a festival filled with live music by the School of Rock house band, family activities, food trucks, and more!

America’s High School Students to Descend Upon Walt Disney World Resort f or HBCU Week Foundation College Fair in October

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., PRNewswire --

The HBCU Week Foundation is bringing its college fair to Walt Disney World Resort for the second time, continuing Walt Disney World’s support of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

The HBCU Week Foundation is a nonprofit organization that encourages high school age youth to enroll into HBCUs, provides scholarship dollars for matriculation and sustains a pipeline for employment from undergraduate school to corporate America. It’s a two-day event that takes place every other year and is happening Oct. 23-24 this year at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, which last hosted the event in 2022.

The event will feature a reception along with a college fair that’s expected to draw nearly 8,000 high school students from across the Southeast and beyond, making it one of the foundation’s largest-ever. On hand will be more than 40 representatives from the nation’s HBCUs, some of whom will be granting on-the-spot admissions and four-year scholarships worth millions of dollars.

And there will be lots of Disney magic sprinkled throughout the event, including appearances by beloved Disney characters, entertainment, music and some special surprise moments that can only happen at The Most Magical Place on Earth.

The 2022 event at Walt Disney World featured more than 8,000 attendees and over $11 million in scholarships, which were both event records at that time.

NEW ORLEANS – Delivering the keynote speech at the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB) Annual Convention, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Acting Secretary Adrianne Todman applauded NAREB for policies and practices advancing Black wealth. She also cited HUD’s many accomplishments during the Biden-Harris administration, such as “helping hundreds of thousands of families keep their home when times were tough during the pandemic.”

Acting Secretary Todman praised her predecessor, HUD Secretary Marcia Fudge, saying, “People kind of forget what it was like when we entered our jobs in 2021. But it wasn’t pretty, was it? No. So we stood up programs” that supported families.

Further, she cited improvements in the housing counseling services. “We did common sense changes in our hard homeownership process. Things like when interest rates went up, it was our Vice President (Kamala Harris) who announced cuts in HUD’s mortgage fees…cuts that today has netted over $800 million in savings for homeowners. Just in the past year, we changed the way that we looked at our underwriting. We got smart about how we looked at student loan debt and making if someone who is becoming a homeowner for the first time, the only thing they have to show is how they’ve paid their rent.”

Acting Secretary Todman congratulated NAREB for working to help families build generational wealth. “I applaud you, and given the partnership that you have with not just HUD but the Biden-Harris administration, I bring you greetings from our president, Joe Biden, and I bring you warm greetings from the fierce and fearless Vice President Kamala Harris.”

“The city of New Orleans is thankful to you for hosting your 76th conference in a city that matters,” said Mayor Cantrell. “I can’t think, think of anyone else that I would wat to be in the trenches with moving this country, moving our communities along, then being with you.”

Over four days, NAREB hosted a series of comprehensive panels, sessions, and workshops providing its members, known as Realtists, with data, counsel, and information that will better prepare them to assist consumers, particularly Black families, and individuals, with selling and buying homes, and building Black wealth, for instance.

NAREB is committed to increasing Black homeownership, the leading driver of Black wealth. The BlackWhite wealth gap is so expansive in the United States that the 400 wealthiest Americans control the same wealth as all 48 million Blacks living in the country. The wealth imbalances perpetuate the racial disparities in housing, education, employment, income, and health that create inequitable environments nationwide.

Last fall, NAREB launched a Building Black Wealth Tour that has hosted events in more than 100 cities around the country, where NAREB and its partners host classes, workshops, and one-on-one counseling on homebuying, investing, credit, and careers in real estate. There are two million African Americans who are mortgage-ready but are not homeowners.

“Our convention arms our Realtists with the knowledge and tools they need to work with Black consumers to increase Black homeownership,” said Dr. Rose. “Increasing homeownership and closing the racial wealth gap is essential for achieving true racial equality in America.”

NAREB was formed in 1947 to secure equal housing opportunities regardless of race, creed, or color. NAREB has advocated for legislation and supported or instigated legal challenges that ensure fair housing, sustainable homeownership, and access to credit for Black Americans.
