THE RAPID RESPONSE FUND AWARDS ORGANIZATIONS63 Candice Washington founded Brown Books and Paintbrushes in 2017 to educate young children about Black culture through art, literacy and cultural programming. Paintbrushes was able to purchase 1000 more books and implement mental wellness kits and coping toolboxes. Chicago Beyond was started six years ago by Liz Dozier to support hyperlocal community-based orga nizations. The goal is to make an impact on the systems level, which includes the Chicago Public Schools and Cook County Jail. Chicago Beyond started the Rapid Re sponse Fund in 2020. It realized there were organizations, whose work was directly aligned with the com munities they served, that were doing the work but were often times being overlooked. The Rapid Response Fund provides those hyperlocal communi ty-based organizations with couldthosefunds, discretionarywhichmeantorganizationsdecidewhere the funds would go. The plan was for Chicago Beyond to do the Rapid Response Fund one time. During that first year, Chica go Beyond saw the impact the funding made on those organizations, they were putting the resources to use in interesting ways, and it enables them to solicit funds from other funders. It continued through to 2021. This round there were 63 organizations that received a por tion of $1.7 million. “With the dollars, what we’re doing is acknowledg ing that, again, people within their own communities have solutions, they should be supported. We’re just firm believers that this type of thinking, this type of action, Rapid Response, are important and critical to a long-lasting impact,” said Liz Dozier, founder and CEO of Chicago Beyond. It is also important for Chicago Beyond to make sure it is getting the names of those organizations doing the impactful work within the community from people in the community. A People’s Assembly comprised of resi dents and community leaders that are also on the ground recommending organiza tions. One of the things the Rapid Response Fund has embedded in it, is the Healing Stipend. Leaders received $1,000 to help them care for themselves and their team. “For us, it was just about acknowledging that this work is challenging and it’s stressful. Of tentimes when we think about non-profit work, we’re thinking about clients or those children who are served. We forget the toll this work actually takes on people who are doing the service,” Dozi er said. When Brown Books first started, it focused on children ages 0-9 years old. With money from the Rapid Response Fund, it has been able to expand their reach. Washington knew the coping toolbox es and mental wellness kits were something the program’s participants needed because of feed back from families and research. “Those mental well ness toolkits, it was crazy just to look at families’ experience those. One of the tools was to help children with breath work. What we have realized from doing this work, surrounding mental wellness, is adults are asking for the toolboxes, too,” Washington said. “We’re just excited to do the work and have the funds to do it.”

Having unrestricted funds helped Brown Books and Paintbrushes because the organization just had to do the work, without having to jump through hoops. “The work Chicago Beyond is doing is just incredi ble. I want to be able to support and spread the news of what Chicago Beyond is doing within my community and in my sector,” Washington said.

It’s been over a year since the death of Illinois State University student Jelani Day, and his family and the community still have questions about his death. State Senator Elgie R. Sims, Jr. – who championed what is known as the “Jelani Day” bill – will celebrate Day’s life and legacy Saturday. “A year has passed since the tragic loss of Mr. Jelani Day, yet his family, the community – and I –continue to mourn,” said Sims (D-Chicago). “Mr. Day’s family – and the families of missing people across this state – deserve our continued help, support and assistance.”When Day went missing, it took two weeks to find his body and another three weeks to identify his remains. This led Sims to champion a law – Senate Bill 3932 – to allow county coroners and medical examiners to receive federal assistance in identifying missing persons. Day’s family played an instrumental role in the passage of the measure. The new law will require a coroner or medical examiner with custody of human remains that are not identified within 72 hours of discovery to immediately notify the Federal Bureau of Investigation for assistance in identification.Whileboth Day’s family and Sims himself are proud of the steps the legislature took to ensure no other Illinois, family has to experience the tragedy Day’s family felt, they believe more awareness still needs to be broughtThat’sforth.why Sims is standing with Day’s family as they launch the Jelani Day Foundation, an effort to fight for change and equity to ensure families of color have the help and momentum needed during the search for missing loved ones. The celebration of life and further announcements regarding the launch of the foundation was held at the Bone Student Center at Illinois State University on Saturday, Aug. 27th.

On Wednesday, Aug. 24, the Obama Foundation released its first annual workforce report highlighting that the organization is on track to meet its ambi tious workforce business diversity goals for construction. With just 18 percent of the spend utilized to date, 52 percent of contracts have been awarded to diverse vendors. While workforce hiring has only just begun, 32 percent of the early workforce comes from the South and West Sides, a key priority for the Foundation to focus on specific communities rather than citywide residents.

The Foundation credits several measures with allowing them to meet their goals, including: A barrier reduction fund to pay for expenses like apprenticeship fees or tools that have presented challenges for workforce candidates in the past; Breaking up large construction bids into multiple smaller packages to ensure smaller and diverse vendors could compete for the bids; Working with trusted allies and partners who have proven successes in engaging constituencies like women in trades and returning citizens who have paid their dues to society and struggled to re-enter the workforce.

The Obama Presidential Center broke ground in September 2021 and is expected to open its doors in 2025. Interested applicants can visit https://www.obama.org/opc-jobs/ to start the workforce application process and learn more about upcoming orientation meetings.

The City of Chicago requires developers to award 32 percent of contracts to minority and women-owned businesses, while ensuring 50 percent of the workforce resides in the City of Chicago - though they do not distinguish between what neighborhoods the workforce will come from within the city limits.

“As a nationally recognized leader in career path ways, Instituto is proud to partner with ComEd and its Craft Academy Program as it connects our community to exciting careers within ComEd,” said Karina Ayala-Ber mejo, CEO, Instituto del Progreso Latino. “Together, we are strengthening the pipeline into successful careers within ComEd that in turn are strengthening our commu nities.”During the three-week program, participants were exposed to a range of topics to prepare them for en try-level craft work, which requires knowledge of the skilled trades or construction. Training included: inten sive CAST Exam preparation, a requirement for trade and construction jobs; the basics of pole climbing; field lessons taught by ComEd experts; and prepara tion on STAR method interview coaching. Upon com pletion, all participants will receive an $800 stipend, in addition to eligibility for scholarships.

-- ComEd announced the first-ever cohort of the ComEd Craft Academy program has graduated, with nine participants demonstrating the knowledge and physical competencies required to enter the craft workforce, comprised of roles in the skilled trades, including entry-level positions such as line workers and construction workers. The Craft Academy launched earlier this year to expand training opportunities for prospective skilled trades workers, a key focus of ComEd’s plan to grow its workforce to meet the demands of the clean energy transition underway in Illinois.

“The men and women who work above and below ground and across northern Illinois to maintain our grid are essential to the work we do to deliver power safely, reliably and affordably for nine million people in the area we serve,” said Diana Sharpe, Interim Vice President of Workforce Development for ComEd. “Never before has it been a more exciting time to join the energy field, and ComEd is investing in training programs that will help recruit more diverse talent to join our team and to learn new skillsets needed to power our clean energy future.”

“My training in the Craft Academy will provide me the tools and experience I need to further my aspi rations for a career in the energy industry,” said Antu an Wilburn, a Craft Academy graduate from Lombard. “My journey began when I connected with ComEd at a career fair back in June. I am so glad I learned about this training program that will allow me an opportuni ty to provide a better life for me and my family.”

ComEd supports a range of other training pro grams to prepare residents for jobs in the trades, including the CONSTRUCT Infrastructure Academy, the Chicago BUILDS program at Dunbar High School, and the Overhead Electrical Line Worker (OELW) program at Dawson Technical Institute, which has graduated over 435 residents with 61 percent of them hired to ComEd. These programs focus on building a diverse and inclusive workforce, with opportunities available across the region, and for a range of ages, from high school to adults opting for a career change. These programs also provide participants the training needed to compete for growing jobs in the utilities industry, an area expected to grow rapidly in the years ahead to support the clean energy transfor mation underway in Illinois. The Center for Energy Workforce Development (CEWD) estimates that 2,000 new utility jobs will be created in the Midwest in the next three years alone. Careers in utilities also offer job seekers competitive benefits and pay, with entry level craft roles earning nearly $29 an hour plus com petitive benefits. NEW YORK, PRNewswire -- The Vilcek Foundation has published a new manga biography celebrating the creative roots of Ghanaian-born artist Samuel “Blitz” Bazawule. A musician, visual artist, filmmaker, and novelist, Bazawule received the Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise in Music in 2013. The Vilcek Foundation Prizes recognize outstanding immigrants and honor immigrants’ contributions to the arts, culture, and society in the United States. The manga comes at a time when Bazawule’s work is reaching more audiences than ever before. His debut novel, The Scent of Burnt Flowers, was published to critical acclaim in June 2022. Baza wule also recently wrapped filming on The Color Purple, a new full-length musical drama based on Alice Walker’s 1982 novel. “With each new medium Blitz explores, his creative vocabulary and reach expands, adding new layers to the stories he shares with audiences and readers,” says Vilcek Foundation President Rick Kinsel. “It has always been the foundation’s intention that our Creative Promise Prizes could catalyze growth and new developments for the young artists who receive them. Blitz’s trajectory since his receipt of the prize demonstrates the influence that a meaning ful investment in artists can have on their career.” Following his receipt of the Creative Promise Prize, Ba zawule tried his hand at filmmaking, with short films and his debut feature, The Burial of Kojo in 2018. In 2020, Bazawule was named a Guggenheim Fellow; later that year, millions would see his directorial work on Beyoncé’s Black Is King, for which he received a Grammy.

As part of this announcement, Dapper Labs is also donating a percentage of their revenue from the sales of Moments featuring Sue and Syl – up to $50,000 per player for a total of $100,000 – to the National Wom en’s Law Center in support of gender justice across issues central to the lives of women and girls.

“We’ve seen, people who love burgers, they also love the Beyond Burger and the Garden Veggie Ranch, just because they want variety,” Grossman said.

Grossman believes that food should be fun. He wants people to come in and celebrate with Epic Burger and have fun. He wants to create a great guest experience and make the guests who come to the restaurant smile.

EPIC BURGER

Grossman’s favorite meal is the Farmhouse, with an order of fries and a vanilla milkshake. For him, there is something about the combination of the fries and the milk shake. The Farmhouse has an egg on it and Grossman loves a burger with an egg on it. For more information about Epic Burger, visit www. epicburger.com.

There are currently five locations of Epic Burger in Chicago and two locations in the sub urbs. There are plans to expand and have more locations in the suburbs and in the city. Ultimately, Epic Burger would expand to other markets.

David Grossman knew Epic Burger, the product, the quality and the people. He was at the opening of the first Epic Burger on State Street 14 years ago. When he was approached to take over the company two years ago, he saw a golden opportunity to take an amazing brand and an amazing product and bring it back to the way it was in 2008. For last year’s celebration, on one day in Septem ber, Epic had $1 burgers all day. Grossman described it as complete madness, in a good way. There were lines at all seven locations. So, this year Epic wanted to spread things out and get peoplethe opportunity to try the entire menu. “Hey, we’re way more than just burgers. We were known for our burgers, our burgers are awesome. It’s 100% quality beef, Black Angus, Halal beef,” Gross man said. Epic Burger also offers turkey burgers, veggie burgers, chicken and Beyond burgers. On Thursday, Sept. 8th, the deal is $5 for the Honey Hot Chicken Sandwich, Cajun fried chicken breast, honey hot sauce, pepper jack, pickle, and Epic sauce, served on a brioche bun; on Sept. 15th, the deal is $5 for Garden Veggie Ranch Burger, veggie burger patty, lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion, and spicy garlic ranch sauce, served on a brioche bun; On Sept. 22md, the deal is the Turkado, lean ground turkey, avocado, cheddar, lettuce, tomato, pickle, grilled onion, and Epic sauce, served on a wheat bun; and on Sept. 29th, the deal is for the Epic Classic Burger, lean ground turkey, avocado, cheddar, lettuce, tomato, pickle, grilled onion, and Epic sauce, served on a wheat bun. “Epic has something for everybody, which is what I love. You could come in every day and try some thing different. You can get a burger one day, get a grilled chicken sandwich, and it takes completely different. You’re never going to get bored,” Gross man Grossmansaid. is hoping to introduce Epic Burger to people who have never tried it, while reminding people who haven’t visited in a long time, that it is still good.

Guest Bathroom

(Family Features)

Closet A cluttered closet may not be the first thing a guest notices, but it’s a space you visit daily. Improving the organizational features can streamline your morning routine and put you in a more positive frame of mind to start each day. There’s no right or wrong when it comes to closet design, but using cabinetry in place of open shelving and rods lends a more luxurious feel. Plan for adequate hanging and closed storage, and if space allows, be sure to plan for shoes and accessories since these items can easily contribute to a closet’s disarray.

Swapping out a tired vanity and countertop is a relatively affordable upgrade that can completely change the style of a secondary bathroom. Be sure to also update the fixtures for a more contemporary look and, if budget allows, replace the flooring. Finish the project with a fresh coat of paint in a light, airy shade and add new textiles and a few decorative touches to complete the job.

Drawer Dividers: While you can find many after-market options to organize the insides of your drawers and cabinets, choosing organizers designed to work seamlessly with your cabi netry creates a more polished look (and saves the headaches of measuring and guesstimating the fit). Tray dividers are useful for sorting cookie sheets and baking pans, while you can find dividers in a variety of heights to match drawers below the oven or where you store your cut lery. Another option that serves a similar purpose is pegs, which keep fragile items from shifting when drawers are opened or closed.

Mini Bar If you fear you don’t have room for a mini bar, you may be surprised. Reimagining a larder cabinet, like the ones Wellborn Cabinet, Inc. offers in 30-, 33-, 36- and 42-inch widths, can create an instant bar out of just about any wall space where you can fit a cabinet. Install it as a coffee bar or traditional bar, or add the optional Appliance Pullout shelf for more versatility.

Not all great things come in big packages, and home upgrades are an example of the truth in this wisdom. Unexpected, smaller spaces may not get the same attention as high-traffic areas like kitchens, bathrooms and living areas, but their impact can be just as powerful. Get inspired to make improvements to the lesser-used areas of your home with these tips from the home decorating experts at Wellborn Cabinet, Inc.: Entryway It’s the impression that welcomes guests into your home, so even if the space is small, your entryway warrants some TLC. Focus on making it open and inviting by removing any unnecessary furnishings. Some functional storage, like a bench with integrated coat hooks, can serve a practical purpose, and if you have the space, some built-in cabinetry with an eye-catching countertop can incorporate stylish storage.

Hideaway Storage Spaces

Laundry Room Getting motivated to do chores like laundry is easy when you have a beautiful setting for getting to work. Introducing pops of color in nontraditional places, like the cabinetry, adds a high-end elegance. Water-inspired and earthy hues like Midtown Matte Tidewater or Arcadia Chiffon Cypress are perfect for the laundry space. Both are options in Wellborn Cabinet, Inc.’s Aspire Series, which features concealed hinges with self-close functionality and matching interiors for a high-class look, even when the doors are open for business.

Here are some clever ideas for keeping necessary items tucked out of sight but within easy reach:

Find more ideas for updating unexpected spaces in your home at Wellborn.com.

Paper Towel Pullout: Keep paper towels hidden but close by hiding them in a pullout cab inet such as Wellborn Cabinet Inc.’s 12-inch-wide model, which features a built-in paper towel holder and bottom shelf ideal for organizing cleaning products. There’s also a space behind the paper towels that’s perfect for storing sponges and other kitchen supplies.

One feature that enhances virtually any space is more storage. Having convenient places to tuck away all your stuff makes rooms feel more open and inviting. Hidden storage solutions are often better because you can enjoy the functionality they add to the space without interrupting your design aesthetic.

UNEXPECTEDSPACESSurprisinghomeupgradeideas

Pantry Guests may not find themselves in your pantry very often, but you likely use this space every day. Transform your pantry for heightened utility in simple ways like using clear plastic bins for small boxed foods or stylish wicker baskets to hide away snacks. For a more permanent solution, take advantage of unused space on the back of the pantry door with thin shelves for items like seasoning packets and smaller canned goods.

Built-in Step Stool: If you love the look of tall cabinets but struggle to reach the top shelves, a practical addition is a hidden step ladder in a pullout caddy. Specially designed lad ders that fold down extra narrow and feature nonslip rubber treads make this a handy addition you’ll reach for again and again.

WEEKENDC

PCS consists of sequelae in one-third of COVID-19 patients and could potentially be per manent. The U.S. government estimated that between 7.7 to 23 million people are suffer ing from PCS in the United States. In Asia, PCS prevalence reaches 51%. Symptoms of PCS include breathlessness, persistent cough, fatigue, pain, brain fog, anxiety, depression, palpitations, dizziness, weakness, and sleep problems. These symptoms have negative impacts on personal communica tion, daily activities, and social functioning. Some PCS suffer ers even display severe disabilities. While a recent survey in the U.S. announced more than three-quarters of PCS patients did not feel sick enough to be hospitalized when infected with SARS-CoV-2, this impending health disaster is caused by a “silent killer” that seems determined to irreversibly destroy human health. StemCyte aims to treat PCS by infusing umbilical cord blood that is capable of anti-inflammation and tissue repair. How this “silent killer” wreaks havoc on the body is still under in vestigation, as it appears SARS-CoV-2 viral infection is the current prospective mechanism leading to multiple organ damage. More over, this pathogenesis triggers long-term in flammation and auto immunity. Therefore, although COVID-19 may be resolved in a patient, the remaining Long COVID symptoms become a chron ic and systemic illness that leads to persistent PCS complications. The prevention and treatment of COVID-19 is still challenged due to speedy mutations of SARSCoV-2. Nevertheless, medical science has gradual ly identified keys to develop medicines to control infection. Hope remains in Pandora’s box as the hope to cure PCS-mediated disability is yet under develop ment. There have been a few candidates for potential treatment or cure examined in clinical trials, but almost all may just temporarily ameliorate a specific PCS symptom. Treatment with systemic and per sistent efficacy will be the total solution to cure PCS. StemCyte’s Phase II clinical trial aims to effectively treat PCS by infusing umbilical cord blood that is capable of anti-inflammation and tissue repair for long-term effect.

BALDWIN PARK, Calif., PRNewswire -- Southern California cord blood regenerative therapeutics company StemCyte is pleased to announce it has received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for their Phase II clinical trial for Post-COVID Syndrome (or PCS) using umbilical cord blood stem cell therapy. PCS is also referred to as Long COVID and is characterized by lingering health effects or symptoms that are not explained by tests, which could last years.

SAN DIEGO, PRNewswire -- Cue Health Inc. (Nasdaq: HLTH), a healthcare technology company that puts diagnostic information at the center of care, announced the nationwide launch of Cue Care™, its same-day, at-home, test-to-treatment solution. Patients in any of the 50 states who test positive using Cue’s COVID-19 tests can now use the Cue Health App to: Consult virtually and on-demand with a healthcare professional about their test result; Obtain an e-prescription - if medically indicatedfor a medication to treat the virus; and Get the medication delivered - usually within hours* - conveniently and safely at home or the med ication will be made available for pickup at their local pharmacy.Within a few weeks, Cue Health anticipates expanding this new service to patients who test positive on any COVID-19 test, including at-home antigen tests. The Cue Care antiviral delivery service costs between $79 and $99 and includes a televisit with a healthcare professional and delivery of a medication, the cost of which is currently covered by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). According to HHS, early COVID-19 treatment can help improve patient outcomes, reduce hospital ization, and even save lives. “Early diagnosis and treatment have shown to lead to better health outcomes, which is why we’re proud to deliver timely testing and treatment all within the Cue Health App,” said Ayub Khattak, Chairman and CEO of Cue Health. “Cue Care meets the need today for convenient delivery of COVID-19 treatment, and this capability will support our expanding pipeline of future diagnostics tests.” Current and future testing capabilities While Cue Care is for COVID-19 patients today, it is expected to apply to a wide range of diagnostic tests in Cue’s pipeline, particularly those for which specific treatments are available. For example, if an individual tests positive for flu, they will be able to use Cue Care to connect with a healthcare professional and, if eligible, get an antiviral for flu delivered to them on the same day, all within the Cue Health App. Cue Care is expected to handle other respiratory infections, such as strep throat and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), as well as sexually transmitted infections, such as chlamydia and gonorrhea.
