Study: Oil and Gas Industries’ Toxic Pollutants Are Poisoning African-American Communities

WASHINGTON, DC -- Clean Air Task Force (CATF) and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) have co-authored a landmark report that demonstrates, for the first time, the specific health risks from airborne pollutants caused by oil and natural gas development impacting African American communities. The study, Fumes Across the Fence-Line: The Health Impacts of Air Pollution from Oil and Gas Facilities on African American Communities, was launched at a briefing at the National Press Club by CATF and NAACP, and supported by the National Medical Association (NMA). Key findings of the study are: Oil and natural gas facilities are built near or currently exist within a half-mile of over one million African Americans, exposing them to an elevated risk of cancer due to air toxic emissions; The oil and natural gas industries violate the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) air quality standards for ozone smog due to natural gas emissions in many African American communities, causing over 138,000 asthma attacks among school children and over 100,000 missed school days each year; There are 91 counties across the U.S. that are building oil refineries or where refineries exist close to more than 6.7 million African Americans, or 14 percent of the national population, disproportionately exposing them to toxic and hazardous emissions such as benzene, sulfur dioxide and formaldehyde. Cook County Board Approves Three Tax Incentives Designed to Support Economic Growth

Cook County Commissioners today approved three proposals from President Toni Preckwinkle’s Bureau of Economic Development that will provide tax incentives to businesses in Cook County. The incentives, which will either create new or save existing jobs, were approved in the following communities: Calumet City, Elk Grove Village and Schaumburg. As a result of redevelopment activities, these incentives should support the creation of an estimated 12 new private sector fulltime jobs, retain an estimated 62 full-time jobs and support 37 construction jobs. “The companies receiving these incentives have demonstrated their commitment to our communities and residents,” Preckwinkle said. “I’m pleased that we are able to use our tax incentive tools to either keep or expand businesses in Cook County.”

Winterfest returns to the Village of Flossmoor this year with a few new twists for residents. The celebration runs from 2 to 5 p.m. Dec. 9 at different locations throughout the village’s downtown. All of the day’s festivities will lead up to the big event at 5:15 p.m., the lighting of the village’s menorah and Christmas tree at Flossmoor Park. “There is a beautiful 30-foot evergreen tree right in Floosmoor Park,” said Laura BrennanLevy, program and event coordinator for the Village of Flossmoor. “We worked with the park district and the fire department for electricity and decided it was a go, this way we don’t have to kill a tree.” In past years, the lighting ceremony was held in front of the Flossmoor Public Library. Santa Claus will be at the library at 2 p.m. and at 4:30 p.m., Santa will lead children in a parade through the village’s downtown, ending at Flossmoor Park just in time for the tree and menorah lighting. Santa is always played by a member of the fire department, according to Brennan-Levy. “We thought it would be a fun time to

showcase the quint downtown area and bring everyone over to the tree and highlight the amenities of the park district as well,” said Brennan-Levy Downtown businesses will participate in the Homewood-Flossmoor Park District ‘s story trail. Each participating business will have a page of the story in their window. “We are gonna start it at the library and have it in business windows leading all the way to the tree,” said Brennan-Levy. The book that was selected for this years story trail is The Mitten by Jan Brett. “It’s a Ukrainian folk tale about a boy who lost his white mitten and animals start climbing into it one by one from a little mouse to a giant bear.” “It’s such a great time to collaborate with the different agencies in Flossmoor, including the library, the businesses, the schools and the park district,” said Brennan-Levy. For more information visit www.flossmoor. org. Photo caption: The Village of Flossmoor is gearing up for its annual Winterfest event on Dec. 9. This years event will have several changes, including a new location for the tree and menorah lighting at Flossmoor Park.

GATEWAY FOR CANCER RESEARCH ANNOUNCES $3.5 MILLION RAISED AT ITS 26TH ANNUAL CURES GALA “GATEWAY TO OZ”

Gateway for Cancer Research (Gateway), a non-profit dedicated to funding transformational cancer research, recently raised $3.5 million at its 26th annual Cures Gala, “Gateway to OZ,” held on Saturday, November 18, 2017 in the Grand Ballroom at McCormick Place in Chicago. With more than 800 guests in attendance, teams of young dancers from Chicago’s Gus Giordano Dance School led the way down the Yellow Brick Road to an evening of star-studded entertainment worthy of the Emerald City, including performances by Matteo Bocelli, son of Andrea Bocelli, at his inaugural Chicago performance; Billy Gilman, the youngest singer to ever reach #1 on the Billboard Top Country Album charts; Pia Toscano, American Idolfinalist; and Laura Bretan, America’s Got Talent finalist and “Golden Buzzer” winner and opera singer. Guests danced the night away to a show-stopping performance by pop legends and event headliners, Earth, Wind & Fire. “Gateway to Oz” showcased a number of the 57 clinical trials currently underway, including Dr. Nilofer Azad of Johns Hopkins University and her patient Rukhsana Siddiqi. Dr. Azad is conducting a trial on pancreatic adenocarcinoma and evaluating the benefits of a molecular therapy with epigenetic modulating drugs in high risk patients. The goal is to see a reduced reoccurrence of pancreatic cancer and reduced side effects for an improved quality of life.

854,000 Illinoisans to See Tax Hike

“I am extremely disappointed that my Republican colleagues, Congressmen Peter Roskam (IL-06), Mike Bost (IL-12), Rodney Davis (IL-13), Randy Hultgren (IL-14), John Shimkus (IL-15), Adam Kinzinger (IL-16) and Darin LaHood (IL-18), voted to hike taxes on the middle class, automatically cut $25 million from Medicare and add $1.5 trillion to the deficit,” said Congresswoman Robin Kelly, following passage of the GOP’s tax bill. Kelly said for years, she has been privileged to serve with her Republican colleagues from Illinois, in the General Assembly or in Congress. She said she has always tried to work with them to advance common sense legislation that supports Illinois families and businesses. “However, I believe that every Illinois family who sees their taxes go up deserves to know exactly who is responsible: their Republican representatives in Congress - Roskam, Bost, Davis, Hultgren, Shimkus, Kinzinger and LaHood,” Kelly said. “This so-called ‘tax reform’ bill will raise taxes on an estimated 854,000 middle and working class Illinoisans. Nationwide, 36 million middle class households will see a tax hike and one in four Americans will be paying an additional $2,000-plus in taxes.”

South Suburban Community College celebrated their 90-year anniversary by dedicating a new permanent display of the school’s history and legacy on Nov. 9.

South Suburban College Dedicates 90-Year Anniversary Display By: Katherine Newman

South Suburban College hosted a dedication ceremony for the new College History Wall and Display on Nov. 9 in the atrium of the College’s Main Campus. The display was dedicated in honor of the school’s 90-year anniversary. “It’s a collection of historical photos and memorabilia dating back to 1927 when the college was founded. There are a wealth of historical photos, a lot of artifacts, some news paper articles, and an overall history of the college from the founding to today,” said Alysia Robinette, publications specialist at South Suburban College. The display is a permanent feature of the college located at 15800 S. State St., South Holland, IL. At the dedication ceremony College President Don Manning talked about the impact South Suburban College has had on the community and the lives of past and current students. President Manning spoke about how students today share the same hope for the future as those who came before, according to a press release about the dedication ceremony from South Suburban

College. “The general legacy of the college has just been making education accessible to the community. When this college was started, college was only for the wealthy,”Robinette said. “As one of the first community colleges, we brought in the idea that you could have a full time job and go to college. The purpose of the college was to provide education for working people.” In 1927, a small group of high school graduates gathered at Thornton Township High School on 151st street in Harvey. They were the start of what is now a 90year legacy of educational opportunity for residents of the south suburban region, according to the press release from South Suburban College. “We went from 30 men and 17 women in 1927, that was our first class, and then in the early 80’s we had increased enrollment to approximately 10,000 students,” said Robinette. South Suburban College was once known as Thornton Community College and Thornton Jr. College. The public is invited to stop by Monday through Friday to view the display.

Michael Grant Resigns from National Bankers Association to Lead Regional Mortgage Banking Office and Launch National Speaking Tour By Hazel Trice Edney (TriceEdneyWire.com) - Michael A. Grant, who has gained a national reputation for his advocacy for Black economic empowerment for nearly a quarter of a century, has announced that he is resigning from the presidency of the National Bankers Association (NBA) effective Dec. 31. “After nine years, I feel like I have taken this organization as far as I can take it,” Grant said in an interview with the Trice Edney News Wire this week. “I used the NBA as a platform to promote Black economic empowerment because I feel honestly that that is where we are right now in our evolution in this country.” He continued, “But it’s more than just wealth. There are issues that are ancillary and tied into this wealth. If you look at us in terms of what’s happening to us with incarceration rates, look at how our system of justice treats African-Americans, look at how we are positioned in business and what networks are we in or not in. From every level of government to the private sector, we are still not first class citizens.” It is this level of insight that has not only sustained Grant at the NBA, but will now take him to the next level of his career, according to those who know and support him. Grant publicly announced his resignation at the close of the NBA’s 90th anniversary celebration October 6. In an interview, he said he has accepted the presidency of a Black-owned mortgage banking firm’s regional office in his hometown of Nashville, Tenn. He is withholding the name of the new firm until it is officially announced, but he describes it as a position that will give him greater freedom Michael A. Grant to exercise his passion - speaking on issues of economic empowerment across the nation. “Michael came to the NBA with a lot of energy. The excitement that he came with, that excitement has doubled. He’s been a great, great spokesperson for us and a leader for us to continue having our banks to provide services for the minority community across the country,” says

Alden McDonald, CEO of Liberty Bank in New Orleans. “He’s stayed on task and he’s communicated our message extremely well to the people in government to the people in corporate America and to the banking community as a whole. He was always able to communicate what AfricanAmerican banks and minority banks have done for this country.” McDonald also praised Grant for his ability to coalesce. Grant is among the three founders of Black Wealth 2020, a movement that aims to increase Black business ownership, Black home ownership and business with Black banks by the year 2020. “He understands the importance of servant leadership and will be truly missed in the capacity as president and CEO of the National Bankers Association,” says Ron Busby, President/CEO of the U. S. Black Chambers Inc., a co-founder of Black Wealth 2020. “Under his leadership, the bank Black movement was created and well received. And he understands that affordable and accessible credit is one of Black businesses’ primary concerns. We look forward to his continued success and advocacy for AfricanAmericans in his future endeavors.” Serving as NBA president since 2008, Grant credits the co-branding of the organization with his working in sync with a proactive and visionary board. But, his individual leadership has long been recognized in the Black business community. In 2014 the Minority Business Development Agency of the U. S. Department of Commerce honored him with its Legacy Award for Lifetime Achievement, in recognition for a person who has “played an integral role in the creative, technical or professional progress of minority business development over the course of his/her life.” Grant’s roots are deep in Nashville, where he grew up as one of 17 children. In 1990, he organized a statewide meeting in Tennessee that brought together church leaders and entrepreneurs in an all-day seminar titled, “Black Economic Development Through the Church.” The event was covered by JET magazine.

He has served as president of the Nashville Branch of the NAACP; a fundraiser of the NAACP’s Tennessee State Conference of Branches, and cofounder of the Greater Nashville African-American Chamber of Commerce. He says he will commute often to DC to continue his role among the leadership of Black Wealth 2020. “Michael has been in the forefront of addressing the issues that prevent Black banks, and all Black businesses, from gaining their fair share of opportunities for success. His departure is a major loss for the NBA, but I am glad to know that Michael will stay active with Black Wealth 2020, and will continue to bring his energy and commitment to our coalition,” says Jim Winston, president of the National Association of Black-owned Broadcasters, also a co-founder of Black Wealth 2020. Grant is launching out with a vision that was strongly articulated by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who had begun leading an economic justice campaign after the passage of the civil rights and voting rights acts. “It seems to me that the only way that we can finally close the gap and make the pledge that we say when we’re saluting the flag - ‘one nation, under God with liberty and justice for all’ - the only way that we can make that a reality is for Black Americans to take financial control of our destiny so that we’re not walking around with a feeling of entitlement or the belief that somebody else is going to provide health, education and welfare for our people,” says Grant. “Nobody is going to do that for us but us... The thought leaders in our race whether in Africa or the Caribbean or in America, they’re pretty much getting on the same page. Economic empowerment is where we’ve got to be.” Meanwhile, the NBA board will begin the task of seeking new leadership. “Michael Grant has been an outstanding advocate for the NBA and its member Banks,” says Evelyn F. Smalls, NBA board member and President/CEO, United Bank of Philadelphia. “He was relentless in connecting both public and private leaders with NBA CEOs to ensure that collaborative business relationships could evolve and that the member banks would have a presence and voice as public policies are discussed.” The groundwork he has laid will continue to work even after he has gone from NBA, she said, pointing to his leadership in bridging the gap between NBA banks and the Small Business Administration as a major example of his string of accomplishments. “With the ongoing presence of the SBA leadership advocating for NBA banks to utilize the various SBA loan programs to support the growth and sustainability of small businesses, we found a winning business strategy for the bank and its clients,” Smalls said. “These SBA loans support small business growth while creating and retaining jobs yielding real economic impact in the bank’s region.”

October Home Sales Posted Modest Gains As Metro Chicago Residential Market Continues Thriving Despite Dwindling Inventory, RE/MAX Reports ELGIN, Ill., Nov. 16, 2017 – The metro Chicago residential real estate market shook off the constraints posed by a dwindling inventory of homes for sale to post modest gains in October, RE/MAX reports. Compared to the same month last year, sales rose 2.7 percent to 8,931 units in the seven-county metro area, and the median sales price gained 2.3 percent to $224,000 despite a 9.2 percent decline in properties listed for sale. The average time a home sold in October spent on the market before finding a buyer fell to 74 days from 83 days one year earlier. It is the shortest average market time for October since RE/MAX began tracking that data in 2005. “The lack of inventory continues holding back sales, but demand for homes remains strong; that is especially true in the attached segment of the market,” explained Chris Calomino, spokesperson for RE/MAX Northern Illinois. “Last year, attached homes accounted for 35.5 percent of October sales. This year they were 37.1 percent of the total. But whether a home is attached or detached, we’re hearing from our brokers that properties in good condition and reasonably priced are selling quite quickly. We expect an active market right through the holiday season and into 2018.” The home sales data used for the RE/MAX analysis is collected by MRED, the regional multiple listing service. It covers detached and attached homes in the Illinois counties of Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry and Will. Detached homes are typically stand-alone single-family dwellings. Attached homes include condominium and cooperative apartments along with townhouses. Total home sales activity rose in all seven metro counties, with DuPage the clear leader. Sales there were up 6.9 percent, while the six other counties and the City of Chicago had gains of 3.7 percent or less. The median sales price rose in six counties, led by gains of 9.8 percent in Lake and 9.7 percent in Kendall. Elsewhere, the median price rose 2.5 percent

or less, except in Kane County, where it fell 1.6 percent. Average market time shortened in all seven counties and ranged from as long as 85 days in McHenry to just 51 days in Kendall. Attached Homes October sales of attached homes in the metro area totaled 3,311 units, up 7.2 percent from the same month in 2016. The median sales price rose 3.3 percent to $188,000, and average market time declined to 60 days from 69 days a year earlier. Sales activity and the median sales price were up in all seven counties and in Chicago. Sales in Cook accounted for 65.8 percent of all attached sales in the metro area and were up 5.3 percent from the year earlier level. The sharpest gains in sales activity were in Kendall, up 23.8 percent, and McHenry, up 19.5 percent. The median price rose just 1.9 percent in Cook, but gained 18.1 percent in McHenry and 17 percent in Lake. Other noteworthy increases were 8.9 percent in Will, 6.4 percent in Kendall and 5.7 percent in Chicago. Detached Homes The detached market posted uneven results in October. Total sales rose just 0.3 percent to 5,620 homes, and the median price was up 2.8 percent to $241,500. It is the highest October median price since 2007.

Average market time shortened to 82 days from 91 days a year earlier. Sales activity rose in four counties and fell in three but the changes were generally small in both directions. The same was the case with median prices, which rose in six counties and fell less than 0.5 percent in Kane. The largest increases in median price were 9 percent in Kendall, 8.1 percent in Lake and 4.7 percent in DuPage. Sales in Chicago were up 3.3 percent, and the median price gained 0.5 percent to $220,000. RE/MAX agents consistently rank among the most productive in the industry. In 2016, RE/MAX Northern Illinois agents averaged 18 transaction sides. RE/MAX has been the leader in the northern Illinois real estate market since 1989 and is continually growing. The RE/MAX Northern Illinois network, with headquarters in Elgin, Ill., consists of more than 2,250 sales associates and 105 independently owned and operated RE/MAX offices that provide a full range of residential and commercial brokerage services. Its mobile real estate app, available for download at www.illinoisproperty.com, provides comprehensive information about residential and commercial property for sale in the region. The northern Illinois network is part of RE/MAX, a global real estate organization with 115,000+ sales associates in 100+ nations.

Paving the way to college: 4 things parents need to know (BPT) - Senior year: It’s a time to finish college applications, solidify friendships and look forward to the freedom and the responsibility that come once that final bell rings. A lot of feelings surface during that final year, especially for parents. While your son or daughter might be overjoyed to finally fly the coop and live independently, you’ll probably be dealing with your own mix of emotions, and you’ll want to be sure they’re ready to begin college in the fall. For families with a child headed to college, senior year is best thought of as a transition year. Plan ahead to make sure your family stays on track. To help you and your child with a successful transition, here’s the essential list of landmarks on the road that will take your child from a senior in high school to a freshman in college.

1

Apply yourself in the fall The journey to college begins early, and by the fall of senior year in high school, your child should be in full transition mode. They should be finishing campus visits and finalizing the list of colleges where they want to apply. Make sure they’ve spoken with admission counselors, thoroughly researched schools they’re interested in and have everything they need to complete their college applications. Keep tabs on important deadlines and stay organized to avoid missing any critical due dates. For example, will they want to apply early decision or early action? If so, make sure you have weighed how this could impact your financial plan for college.

2

Focus on financial aid from the start For many parents,

been accepted. In reading these letters, pay close attention to how schools list the total costs. For instance, some schools will subtract the awarded loan amount from the total cost of attendance, while others will not. This could make the net cost of some schools appear less than others when in reality they are not, so take your time reading the documents.

one of the biggest anxieties around college is the cost. Don’t forget that the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) opens on Oct. 1, and some aid is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Make sure you submit the form as soon as it’s available. Because everyone has different needs, figuring out how to finance your child’s education requires some research. At College Ave Student Loans, you can find private loan options for parents and students. Even if you’re not ready to take a loan out yet, parents and students can try out the fast and easy pre-qualification tools to find out if their credit pre-qualifies for a loan, and what interest rates they could expect, all without impacting their credit scores. Calculators are also available to help you explore your options and see how you can customize the loan payments to fit your budget.

3

Spring time is decision time Early in the spring, your child will start to receive their first acceptance letters. Once they’ve heard from all of the schools where they applied, they’ll have a big decision to make. They need to do more than just decide which school to attend; they’ll also need to send in a deposit,

complete their housing form and accept financial aid packages. A crucial step in this process is comparing award letters from the colleges where your child has

4

Tie up everything in the summer Before they head to campus, you and your children should create a budget to keep tabs on college bills. This will help you to stay on track financially and set the right

expectations about how they need to manage their money. You can help your soonto-be freshman by working with them to outline a monthly budget that will take into account expected and unexpected expenses. Take a look at their financial aid packages and any income they might be earning and block out the monthly mandatory expenses. Then decide how much money they can spend on things like entertainment. If you find that scholarships, grants and federal aid don’t cover everything, private loans could be one solution for some college-bound students. For parents and students, senior year is an exciting period. Knowing what steps to take and staying ahead of financial matters with useful tools like the ones at College Ave Student Loans can help make the transition easier for everyone.

Conselle Institute Reports Real Cause Behind Failing Fashion Industry “Fashion retailers are fashion victims of their own making,” reports Executive Director of the Conselle Institute of Image Management, Judith Rasband. “What started in Silicon Valley, was plugged by Levi’s as Casual Friday, has eroded into casual everyday, for everyone, everywhere. Promoting America’s obsession with casual dress, retail giants pushed the dress down trend to the level of faded t-shirts, dirty, distressed, deconstructed denim, and flip-flops. As the result, too many consumers don’t buy or wear nice clothing anywhere, anymore.” “We’re going to see a bloodbath in retail,” reported The Sovereign Investor, June 23, 2017. “Of course discount and e-commerce is a big force,” adds Rasband, “but the retail endorsement of sloppy, slovenly dress is the driving force behind several negative trends.” Rasband says the following are a few of the negative trends we are seeing as a result of the dress-down trend: negative consumer attitude for dressing up, dwindling consumer need for clothing, sluggish store and shopping mall traffic. Scrambling to dig themselves out of a mess of their own making, newspapers nationwide have listed Macy’s, Aeropostale, the Gap, Abercrombie Fitch, Wet Seal, J. Crew, and Michael Kors as among those cutting jobs and closing stores across the nation.

High-end, low-end, stores selling nice-looking clothes are going to go out of business. Caught in the dress down disaster, Rasband reminds us “The first to go were Casual Corner, Petite Sophisticate, and August Max, followed by Cache, Jones New York, and the Limited. Courageous hold-outs not yet giving in to disheveled looks include Talbot’s, Ann Taylor, Dillard’s, Penny’s, Sears, Dress Barn, and Christopher Banks, but they’re paying a price they can’t afford. Saks, Nieman’s, and Lord and Taylor are biting the bullet aimed at them as well.” “I’ve been tracking the demise of department stores for decades,” said Rasband, who predicted the death of department stores in 1985. Her fashion forecast came out as a report in 1995, America’s Going Down The Tube In A T-shirt, delivered in Washington D.C. to the Association of Family and Consumer Sciences, with repeat sessions and standing ovations. The members got it—but scattered across the country they were powerless to affect opinion or practice within the fashion industry. “While it may be too late, it’s time to stop the pretense,” asserts Rasband. “Shabby Chic, Rebel Chic, Poverty Chic, and Utility Chic are marketing strategies America cannot afford. It’s time to get dressed up again!”
