reddie Figgers, an American inventor, selftaught computer programmer, and entrepreneur, who operates his own cell phone company, Figgers Communications Inc., one of the nation’s fastest growing African-American-owned telecommunications firms. (Tallahassee, Florida) - At the age of 9, Freddie Figgers’ father, Nathan, bought him an old nonworking IBM personal computer at a local Goodwill Store. Figgers, in his attempt to fix it, took that computer apart five times. On the sixth time, he got it working. He was thrilled and has since never looked back. Now, the 27-year-old is founder and owner of Figgers Communication, a privately held company that provides cellular, mobile broadband, home phone and international calling services. He is one of the youngest African-Americans to receive an FCC license to operate a mobile company. In addition to owning his own telecommunications company, Figgers owns four patents with an additional two others pending. Most recently, Figgers has developed a custom-designed cellular phone, the “Figgers F1”, that has gold trimming, highdefinition display, dual SIM capability, multi-user capability, automatic anti-texting functionality and super-fast charging. Figgers designed and manufactured the Figgers F1 in the USA for its 4G Voice over LTE Network, trying to capitalize off the $420 billion mobile phone industry. “I’m using all of my capital to learn and develop new ideas,” said Figgers who has self-funded his business from the start. “I’m reinvesting in this business.” Figgers’ entrepreneurial savvy began as a teenager. At age 13, he started working for the city of Quincy as a computer technician and network administrator in its NetQuincy department, setting up the city’s network and helping residents. At 16, Freddie started his first company, Figgers Computers, repairing computers and installing wireless area networks. By age 18, he created a cloud-based hosting network and his own computer operating system. Eager to launch his own mobile communications company, Freddie designed a VOIP - Voice Over Internet Protocol network - that transmits voice to and from the USA from more than 80 countries’ landline and mobile connections. He achieved another milestone in 2011, when the company received approval from the FCC to own a spectrum, leading to the construction of the company’s first cellular tower. “I’ve had a pretty good life,” said Freddie, who was raised by his adoptive parents in Quincy, Florida, located just outside of Tallahassee. “My parents really supported me . . . I am continuing to be innovative because I know that’s how I can try to stay ahead of the competition.”

Rob Calhoon, who has been a band director for more than 20 years and who has served as director at SSC for three years, said one of the greatest things about Jazz is that it’s a standard music that is constantly evolving because of the creativity of the players themselves. “Jazz taps into the musicians’ and the listeners’ creative side,” Calhoon said. “One thing that makes Jazz music distinct from other musical forms is its observation. The players get to stand up on stage and create on the spot and everybody in the band and the combos listen and react to what they’re doing…whether it be the rhythm section giving a little extra hit here and there based on what the trumpet players just played or the audience reacting verbally or with a smile or a nod.” “Jazz is not the result of choosing a tune, but an ideal that is created first in the mind, inspired by one’s passion, and willed next in playing music. Its unique expression draws from life experience and human emotion as the inspiration of the creative force, and through this discourse is chronicled the history of a people. Jazz and Blues are among
America’s greatest cultural achievements and exports to the world community giving powerful voice to the American experience. Born of a multihued society, it unites people across the divides of race, region and national boundaries and has always made powerful statements about freedom, creativity and American identity at home and abroad,” according to apassion4jazz.net. “Jazz, of course, is not an invention. It’s alive. It grows, it dies, it changes, and it stays the same.
Jazz is to American music what the Mississippi is to America, and just as many rivers feed into the Mississippi, music (and musicians) from many cultures came together in the creation of Jazz. More evidence of early Jazz was produced by Papa Jack Laine’s band in New Orleans circa 1885 when it was noted that he played with a “ragged time,” which meant the musicians were playing variations on the tempo to make it “swing.” Irishman Papa Jack Laine’s Reliance Brass Band was the training ground for many of the musicians, white, black and creole, who went on to pioneer Jazz in their own ensembles,” according to the neworleansonline.com. Joanne Tassin, who was SSC Jazz Combo and SSC Voices Concert Organizer, said while she doesn’t attend the concerts, the significant qualities about jazz music she has noticed is that it brings the community together, makes the neighborhood happy and people who play or listen to jazz really like it. hen taking up the critical work involved in modifying the direction in which our lives may be going, one of the most fundamental things we can do is change the way we think about ourselves. Unfortunately, we sometimes overlook this simple, if not so easy step. Whether we realize it or not, the way we think becomes the basis upon and from which we speak and act. Rare is the occasion when we outperform the things we declare about ourselves. In order to speak life, we must think life. When we change the way we think, we immediately empower ourselves to change the way we speak. Being responsible for the way we think, speak, and believe gives us the immediate ability to respond when life seems out-of-whack. There are more than enough challenges in the world already and sometimes life can be really difficult. Why add to the difficulties by discouraging yourself every day with negative self-talk? As it has been said, “Don’t fill your boat with water. The storm will do that all on its own.” Each of us needs a champion, a coach, and a cheerleader. Become your own encourager, your own cheerleader. Every time you do a good job, don’t just let it pass; give yourself a compliment. Every time you choose discipline over indulgence, don’t tell yourself that you should have anyway; recognize how much you are helping yourself. When you make a mistake, learn from it and improve, but don’t beat yourself up and relive the mistake without getting the lesson. Be patient with yourself. You may not be a finished work just yet. Every constructive thing you can say to yourself will help. Speak life!
