GIANNOULIAS MAKES 130+ LANGUAGES
AVAILABLE ON SECRETARY OF STATE WEBSITE
Language Translations Make Programs & Services
More Accessible
Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias is now offering over 130 languages on the office’s website to help ensure that Illinoisans whose primary language is not English can access critical information and resources in their preferred language.
“Language should never serve as a barrier to attaining equal access to essential government services,” Giannoulias said. “Since Day One, I’ve been focused on modernizing the office and by utilizing technology, we’ve made our website fully available to those who understand one of more than 130 of the world’s languages.”
Users can choose any available language to perform any task offered on the website, including renewing a driver’s license or obtaining a vehicle sticker.
Powered by Google Translate, the website enhancements are one part of Giannoulias’ multi-pronged approach to modernizing the office and will ensure accessibility to the increased number of services offered under Giannoulias’ Skip-the-Line and Do-it-Online programs.
Beginning in September of last year, the office’s Skip-the-Line program launched appointment scheduling to shorten lines and wait times at the state’s busiest DMVs and implemented “Senior-Only” walk-in facilities for older Illinoisans who may encounter difficulty while attempting to schedule an appointment. The Do-itOnline program built on the success of the Skip-the-Line program, making more services readily accessible online.

On The 9 Run Crew Builds Community Through Running

BY TIA CAROL JONESThey wanted to run on the South side in communities like Chatham, Avalon Park and South Shore.
“We are all South side runners, there’s nothing wrong with the South side, I feel safe here, let’s run on the South side,” Russell said.
The run season begins with the Shamrock Shuffle and ends with the Chicago Marathon. To keep their endurance, runners often go on runs as a collective, creating run crews. It builds camaraderie and helps the runners stay motivated. There are several run crews in Chicago, some are powered by Nike and others by Brooks. For people who like to run, sometimes they find it more rewarding to run with other people. Run crews can be as small as two people and can grow over time.
The founders came up with the name On The 9 for the run crew because people call 79th Street the 9. With On the 9 Run Crew, Russell and the other runners want to normalize people running on the South side. She said when people see the group running on 79th Street, people ask them questions and they are even giving the runners encouragement along the way.
“It feels really empowering, it makes me feel really good. It makes you feel really good that you woke up in the morning and ran,” she said.
Russell loves Chicago. She moved back to the city from the suburbs. She wants to bring awareness to the community and has been looking for different restaurants in the community the runners can support once they finish their runs.
“From this run community we’ve just built these long-lasting friendships and it feels really natural to be with each other,” she said.
On that first run from the Regal to the Mahalia Jackson Court there were 24 runners that joined with the group. Since then, they have been running every Saturday at 9 a.m. and they meet at the 63rd Street Beach. During that time, the runners discuss personal running goals they’ve reached and are able to share with the
group before they run.
The hobby also can help people train for races and can promote health and wellness. To prepare for the Shamrock Shuffle, On the 9 Run Crew had a shake out run where they ran two miles. The goal isn’t not to overexert themselves close to race day but to shake their legs out the day before. In April, a few of the runners will go to Milwaukee to participate in a Half Marathon. Russell and two other runners are ambassadors for Venture Endurance Runnings, which puts on the Hot Chocolate Run.
Russell is excited about the prospect of more trails on the South side, like the Englewood Trail and the Bronzeville Trail project. She believes it is a great opportunity to bring running to the South side, which can increase the health of the people in the community.

Chicago – Attorney General Kwame Raoul announced legislation that would protect workers from retaliatory conduct by employers, strengthen current protections under state law and codify the authority of Raoul’s Workplace Rights Bureau to investigate and hold employers who retaliate or threaten to retaliate accountable.
“Currently, workers who want to assert their basic workplace rights risk losing their livelihood and ability to provide for themselves and their families. For some immigrant workers, asserting their rights means risking their ability to remain in the United States,” Raoul said. “We must encourage workers to step up and report dangerous or unlawful practices, and I look forward to continuing to work with members of the Illinois General Assembly to pass these
needed reforms.”
Raoul’s legislation – contained in House Bill (HB) 5561 – would fill existing voids in labor enforcement that leave workers unprotected from often-devastating employer retaliation when they seek to enforce their rights or blow the whistle on unlawful employer practices.
Specifically, the legislation would:
Broaden the scope of conduct protected under the Illinois Whistleblower Act to protect employees who report violations of the law or threats to public health and safety directly to their employer.
Expand the definition of retaliation to include blacklisting an employee from future opportunities and immigration-based retaliation.

“I introduced HB 5561 to ensure workers are protected from retaliatory action and empowered to stand up when illegal or unsafe practices occur in the workplace,” Leader Evans said. “I thank Attorney General Raoul for his leadership on this issue, and I look forward to working with my colleagues in the Illinois House to pass this important worker protection legislation.”

Attorney General Raoul’s Workplace Rights Bureau protects and advances the employment rights of all Illinois residents, particularly the state’s most vulnerable residents and immigrant populations. The bureau investigates and litigates cases involving serious or persistent wage law violations or other significant employment practices, and monitors and proposes legislation concerning labor and employment issues.

City Treasurer Melissa Conyears-Ervin
Announces $318.7 Million in Earnings for Chicago Taxpayers in Fiscal 2023
Chicago, Ill. -- Chicago City Treasurer Melisssa Conyears-Ervin announced that the Chicago Treasurer’s Office (CTO) generated $318.7 million in investment earnings for the City over the course of fiscal year 2023. The returns come from the CTO’s management of the City’s $11.1 billion portfolio of cash, grants, and other assets – a portfolio that has grown by nearly $2 billion since Conyears-Ervin took office. Earnings for 2023 were up 82% year-over-year from 2022 and are nearly triple the earnings of $116.3 million recorded in 2021.
“As City Treasurer, I am proud of how our team has produced these returns for Chicago’s taxpayers while managing the liquidity needs of the City of Chicago,” said Conyears-Ervin. “These earnings can help fund the services and programs needed to build strong, healthy communities and improve people’s lives.”
Conyears-Ervin, the City’s Chief Investment and Banking Officer also announced that of the $11.1 billion portfolio traded, 54.7% was executed with minority businesses, including $2.3 billion with Hispanic-owned firms, $1.7 billion with Black-owned firms, $1.75 billion with veteran-owned firms, and $1.4 billion with
women-owned firms. The CTO ended 2023 in a strong liquidity position, closing out the year with more than $1.8 billion in cash and cash equivalents, which will enable the city to borrow money on more favorable terms, saving taxpayer money.
The City Treasurer is tasked with the primary responsibility of managing the City’s Investment Portfolio and ensuring effective cash management. Meanwhile, the Mayor and City Council establish the annual budget and make spending decisions, while revenues are received throughout the year. The City Treasurer’s Office has adopted a strategic approach aimed at maximizing risk adjusted return while managing the City’s liquidity needs and ensuring the preservation of principal. Employing this strategy has allowed the CTO to earn nearly $1 billion in investment income since 2019.
“As we look to the future, I remain committed to allocating City assets judiciously and in alignment with the values of our constituents, ensuring maximum impact on the lives of all Chicagoans,” said Conyears-Ervin.

This year’s report, reveals that dementia caregivers report difficulties in navigating dementia care within the U.S. health care system. Caregivers also report the stresses of caregiving. The new report estimates that nearly 7 million people age 65 and older in the U.S. are living with Alzheimer’s dementia, with the cost of care for these individuals this year projected to reach $360 billion — a $15 billion increase from a year ago. This does not include unpaid care provided by family caregivers and friends. Last year in Illinois there were 311,000 dementia family caregivers, providing 480,000,000 hours of unpaid care valued at $9,840,000,000.
Facts and Figures provides scientists, journalists and policy makers an in-depth look at the latest national and state-by-state statistics on Alzheimer’s disease prevalence, mortality, caregiving, dementia care workforce and costs of care. This report is one of the many reasons the Association is seen as the trusted leader in the fight to end Alzheimer’s and all other dementia. Facts and Figures provides evidence-based data to support our priorities on behalf of people living with dementia.
We surveyed dementia caregivers and health care workers to develop this year’s special report: Mapping a Better Future for Dementia Care Navigation. The report provides a look into dementia care navigation, which is defined as support to people living with dementia and their caregivers to overcome barriers that impact care and health outcomes.
The new report estimates that 6.9 million people age 65 and older in the U.S. are living with Alzheimer’s dementia, including 250,600 in Illinois.
• In 2023, 11.5 million family and other caregivers of people living with Alzheimer’s or other dementias provided an estimated 18.4 billion hours of unpaid help. That averages out to nearly 31 hours of care per caregiver per week.
• Caregivers are stressed. Coordinating care is stressful. Navigating health care is difficult, as is finding resources and support caregivers need.
• Dementia caregivers would find navigation services helpful. Caregivers identified services they need: a 24/7 helpline, help coordinating care and communication between different specialists and help in understanding their care recipient’s condition.
• The majority of health care workers surveyed (60%) believe that the U.S. health care system is not effectively helping patients and their families navigate dementia care.
This report affirms the importance of the work the Alzheimer’s Association is doing across the country to ensure people get access to dementia care support services — in addition to access to treatments.

Los Bulls Celebrate the Latiné Community
The Bulls celebrate Latiné fans from across Chicago and beyond and help tell their impactful stories. Through their commitment to celebrating and empowering Latiné fans and the intersection of art, culture and community, the Bulls have partnered with several local artists and community programs throughout the season to design art across Chicago that honors Latiné culture.
“This season, the Bulls partnered with four Latiné artists on creative projects including three murals and one basketball court. Murals and public art quickly become part of the fabric of a community, which is why we continue to lend our time and resources to facilitate creative expression, particularly for local youth, and to reflect the rich heritage of Chicago’s Latiné community,” said Adrienne Scherenzel, vice president of community engagement at the Chicago Bulls. “We look forward to continuing our celebration of the Latiné community with our Los Bulls theme night and Watch Party.”
Celebrating Culture and Community Through Art
Throughout the 2023-24 season, the Bulls have installed four pieces of large-scale public art in partnership with Latiné artists.

Mural with Yolllicalli Arts Program and Mario Mena in Pilsen: Designed and painted by students of the Yollocalli Arts Program, the Bulls celebrated the completion of a mural. Working with Yollocalli’s summer Street Art program of 15 students, the Bulls prompted the youth to design a mural that represents both Bulls and Latiné Culture. The students created a design that spans three sides of a house in Pilsen across from the National Museum of Mexican Art. The mural serves as the first stop in museum-led mural tours and depicts Bulls as powerful spirit guides, seamlessly merging the realms of the living and the
afterlife.

SEE RED Mural by Fez in Pilsen: The Chicago Bulls unveiled three new murals that showcase different elements of the Bulls brand in Pilsen, West Loop and West Town ahead of the 2023-24 season. Each mural was hand-painted and designed by a local muralist to showcase different elements of the Bulls brand. The Pilsen mural created by Fedz was inspired by the raw emotion and support of the Chicago Bulls fanbase. Fedz believes that his mural will connect with the people of Chicago because as he shared, “The Chicago Bulls have always been a staple in the community with an extraordinarily diverse fanbase, which I feel are represented within the piece. From children to men and women, we all carry that Bulls

New Poll from Higher Heights: Top Issues for Black Women Voters in 2024 are Inflation, Cost of Living and Affordable Housing
WASHINGTON, PRNewswire -- Higher Heights, the leading national organization exclusively dedicated to advancing Black women’s political power, released new polling data on the top issues of concern to Black women voters in 2024.
With eight months until the November 2024 elections, the poll shows that Black women have top concerns about a broad range of issues, but the top issues for Black women voters are inflation, the cost of living and affordable housing.
“These critical issues impact Black women’s everyday lives. Black women want economically thriving, education-rich, healthy, and safe communities. Our poll shows that cost, not the economy, drives Black women’s issue priorities. This is in our face every day when we go to the grocery store, put gas in our tanks, and pay our rent and mortgages,” said Glynda C. Carr, President & CEO of Higher Heights Leadership Fund. These issues should be the focus of Congress, our elected leaders, and candidates vying for our votes this November.”
Other key findings of the poll include:
Though Black women voters strongly believe in the power of their vote, there is a clear concern for the direction of
Abortion continues to be a galvanizing and mobilizing issue among Black women voters. Over 40% of Black women (say that they are more likely to vote for a candidate who is “pro-reproductive freedom” (more than 35% who say it would not make a difference.) This finding holds true across age, education, and political party.
the country and the upcoming elections. Over three-quarters of Black women voters describe their vote as powerful (76%), but 29% of Black women voters believe their voter power is decreasing as we get closer to the November 2024 election.
Heading into the 2024 elections, Black women voters are most worried about inflation, the cost of living and affordable housing. Despite public safety and gun violence rising to the top as a general concern for the country, Black women voters are most personally worried about how economic issues are impacting their families and communities. That said, racial profiling by police is a top non-economic concern.
Though Black women voters clearly feel the increase in Black elected representation, there is a persistent feeling of underrepresentation that can decrease morale. Despite the fact that 58% of Black women voters believe they are underrepresented in political power, most are still hopefully optimistic about the representational power they do have. Nearly 81% of Black women voters believe that Black women elected officials have the power to effect change in their communities.
Generational divide among Black women could impact their political participation. Voters age 18-49 are less trusting of institutions in general – they are less likely to feel they have political power, less likely to trust the Democratic Party will make a difference in their lives, and less likely to trust the media and news sources they see.
Higher Heights for America, a 501(c)(4), and its sister organization Higher Heights Leadership Fund, a national 501(c)(3) organization are building the political power and leadership of Black women from the voting booth to elected office and creating the environment for Black women to run, win and lead. NAREB PREPARES MEMBERS FOR MAJOR CHANGES TO HOME SALES AGENT COMMISSIONS AFTER LAWSUIT SETTLEMENT
WASHINGTON, DC — Representing the interests of more than 100,000 Black real estate professionals, the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB) announced that it is preparing member agents and brokers for a new environment created by a lawsuit settlement that will significantly alter the compensation of agents on home sales in the United States.
NAREB, whose members are called Realtists, is a trade association that mainly represents African American real estate professionals and advocates for Black homeownership.
Last week, the National Association of Realtors (N.A.R.) settled a Missouri lawsuit challenging the decades-old system requiring the agents of home sellers to split the commission on sales with the agents of home buyers. Most commissions range between five and six percent of home sale prices. Under the settlement, home sellers and their agents can no longer outline compensation for agents representing buyers within their MLS listings. They can, however, negotiate outside of the official listing.
NAREB President Dr. Courtney Johnson Rose acknowledged that many NAREB members may be affected by the commission changes because the majority are usually buyer’s agents.
“NAREB recognizes that this settlement, if approved by the judge, will bring dramatic changes to our industry,” Dr. Rose said. “Our members often represent Black families and individuals who struggle to raise money for the down payments needed to purchase homes due to decades of discrimination and a lack of generation wealth. Paying the commission for their agent will be an
added burden. NAREB will help our members navigate these changes and continue to create avenues for them to thrive and help Black consumers achieve the dream of home ownership.”
NAREB is taking several steps, including:
Ø Appointing a special task force that will study the projected impact of the settlement on its members, as well as the Black community. The task force will recommend how the organization can best assist its members and prevent the settlement from limiting the growth of Black homeownership. The task force will include J. Rene Walker, Texas Broker of Record for Compass Real Estate; Donnell Spivey, Exit Spivey Professional Realty Co.; Furtesha Woods, Broker, Owner - Woods Realty; Irving Cham, District Vice President, Coldwell Banker (Anywhere); Muriel Williams-Thompson, Broker/Owner, Town and Country Realty; and Julia Lashley Israel, Head of Inclusion and Belonging – Keller Williams Realty International.
Ø Developing a Realtist Toolkit for NAREB members that will include the most relevant information and access to resources that can assist them.
Ø Scaling up the NAREB Black Developer Academy, which was launched this year. The academy will provide technical assistance, training, and education to members who want to become real estate developers. This can provide additional revenue avenues while helping increase the housing inventory in communities of color.
Ø Leveraging the 100-city NAREB Building Black Wealth Tour and the NAREB National Building Black Wealth Day on April 13 to strengthen the connection between our members and the communities that they
serve. While we educate Black consumers on purchasing homes and building wealth, our members will also explain the services and value they can bring to our communities.
“With NAREB at their side, our agents and brokers will flourish and impact communities like we have for the past 77 years. Our organization was founded at the peak of housing discrimination; our members have always had to be resilient as we fought for and continue to fight for democracy in housing,” Dr. Rose said, noting the training and educational courses the organization provides at various conferences throughout the year.
“NAREB is prepared to lead in this changing environment and ensure that our members, Realtists, are strong and remain valuable assets in communities,” she said. “NAREB is committed to the advancement of Black real estate professionals, increasing Black home ownership and our enduring pursuit for Democracy in Housing.”
NAREB was formed in 1947 to secure equal housing opportunities regardless of race, creed, or color. NAREB has advocated for legislation and supported or instigated legal challenges that ensure fair housing, sustainable homeownership, and access to credit for Black Americans. Simultaneously, NAREB advocates for and promotes access to business opportunities for Black real estate professionals in each real estate discipline. From the past to the present, NAREB remains an association that is proud of its history, dedicated to its chosen struggle, and unrelenting in its pursuit of the REALTIST®’s mission/vision embedded goal, “Democracy in Housing.”

(StatePoint) As you file your taxes, you may be wondering how a successful tax plan can help you reach your financial goals, whether you’re filing taxes for the first time as a young professional or approaching retirement.
During tax time, put this aspect of your financial plan on the front burner by working with a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional. Here are three ways a CFP® professional can help you make the most of tax deductions, tax credits and tax-advantaged accounts:
deferrals to defined contribution plans such as 401(k)s and 403(b)s have risen considerably. A CFP® professional can help you determine how much you can comfortably contribute each month to shelter more of your wealth from taxes. This move has an additional benefit if you’re close to the edge of a higher tax bracket — by trimming taxable income, you can fall into a lower bracket and save. And, of course, by boosting deferrals, you will be setting yourself up for a more comfortable retirement.
3. Become a strategic giver: As you file your taxes each year, you may have noticed that there’s a high bar for claiming deductions for charitable donations. In fact, for 2023, that standard deduction is $13,850 for single filers and $27,700 for married couples filing together. To make more of your charitable dollars, a CFP® professional can help you establish a donor-advised fund. This allows you to “bunch” your donations and qualify for deductions immediately. This tax-advantageous method of giving is good for you, and good for your end recipients, as it allows your contributions to potentially grow while you decide which charities to support.
CFP® professionals know the latest tax code changes that average investors often do not. To find a CFP® professional committed to acting in your best interest during tax time and beyond, visit
1. Avoid surprises: A tax refund may feel like a boon, but it means that you gave the government an interest-free loan. However, you don’t necessarily want to swing too far in the other direction and end up with an unmanageable tax bill. A CFP® professional can help you adjust your tax estimates or withholdings, so you are more likely to break even next year-end. And if you do end up with a refund, they can help you redirect the money in a way that’s beneficial to your overall financial plan.
2. Plan for the future: The maximum employee
