Jaeda LaVonne knew theatre would be the thing she did for life when she went to see Romeo & Juliet at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis. She was dressed up, sitting in the velvet chairs and compelled by the actors she saw on the stage. She recalls saying that she wanted to do what the actors on the stage were doing and she knew she would do it and she would be really great at it

CITY OF CHICAGO LAUNCHES SMART STREETS PILOT PROGRAM TO MODERNIZE TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM USING CAMERA TECHNOLOGY
New pilot program uses camera technology to enforce illegal parking in bus and bike lanes downtown
CHICAGO— The City of Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) and the Department of Finance (DOF) announced the launch of the Smart Streets Pilot program, an initiative using camera technology to enhance enforcement of parking and standing violations in bus and bike lanes. This pilot program aims to modernize the current system to protect vulnerable road users who are walking, biking and using transit while improving transit operations.
Starting November 4, the City began a 30-day warning period, during which registered vehicle owners will receive mailed warnings for infractions like parking in bike and bus lanes. Beginning on December 5, drivers will receive a warning notice for the first offense, with subsequent violations resulting in fines. In the near future, the program will also enforce violations of metered parking, ticketing vehicles that have not paid the parking meter.
Low-income drivers will continue to be eligible for vehicle-related debt relief through the Clear Path Relief Program.
The pilot will operate within the area from Lake Michigan to Ashland Avenue, and from North Avenue to Roosevelt Road. It will run for two years from the date the first citation is issued. Before the pilot concludes, CDOT and DOF will provide a summary report to City Council, evaluating the effectiveness of automated enforcement, fee collection technologies and operational practices in improving parking compliance and enhancing traffic safety across all modes of transportation.
The pilot will initially include eight City vehicles equipped with cameras to enforce parking violations. In 2025, the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) will install equipment on up to six CTA buses on priority routes to further support the program’s goals of improving transit efficiency and safety. Currently, the CTA’s procurement process is underway.
The Smart Streets Pilot Program aims to protect our residents by addressing the danger of illegal parking and standing behavior for all road users, especially pedestrians and cyclists. Parking in bus-only lanes slows down buses, increases wait times for passengers, and disrupt traffic flow by forcing buses to merge in and out of traffic. By keeping bus lanes clear, we are enhancing the efficiency of Chicago’s growing bus priority network, reducing congestion and improving the experience for CTA riders, particularly those with disabilities who face challenges when buses cannot access the curb due to parked cars.

Jaeda LaVonne comes from an arts family, with her father majoring in theatre in college. She started doing plays in school and in church, from middle school and high school. While in college, she realized she couldn’t step away from the arts and ended up getting her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting and a Master of Fine Arts in Acting.
“Clearly, the love and passion, I just couldn’t get rid of it. I couldn’t leave the stage,” she said.
Jaeda LaVonne plays Cinderella in the Marriott Theatre’s production of “Rogers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella,” which runs through December 29th. She found out about the Marriott Theatre from other actors. She initially submitted a taped audition for the role of one of the stepsisters and received a call from the director who wanted her to read for Cinderella.
While the production tells the story of Cinderella, Jaeda LaVonne said there are some new magical elements added to it. She said Laura Rook, the director of Cinderella, has done a great job of grounding the story, while making the characters feel connected even with them being over the top. Cinderella is running in the theater at the same time as “Irving Berlin’s White Christmas” so there is Christmas décor on the stage, that magic has been added to the production.
“I feel like that just adds to the magic of Cinderella because Christmas can feel like a magical time, as well,
so I feel like that’s going to be a new offering that people might not have seen before,” Jaeda LaVonne said. For her performance as Cinderella, Jaeda LaVonne is going back to her childhood, with a childlike imagination of how she felt watching the story. She also is bringing a lot of herself and her quirkiness, with the way she likes to play. She said the great thing about Cinderella is the way she uses her imagination and dreaming and it’s how she’s able to create new reality despite her circumstances. Jaeda LaVonne gets to come to the character and think about how she uses the elements and bring that to the character.
Jaeda LaVonne hopes that the young people who come see the production are inspired. She said they are the next generation of theatergoers.
“I hope that if there’s someone in the audience like me when I was a little kid and it is their first experience in a theater, that it feels magical, that they feel transported into a new world and I hope they walk away dreaming of ways in which they can use their imagination more and newer ways of looking at the world, maybe on stage themselves one day,” she said.
Jaeda LaVonne is encouraging adults to also come to see the production, because it is a season and time where people can come together and dream a little bit more and add a little imagination and magic.

Chicago Department of Public Health Hosts

Annual Chicago Day of Prayer
CHICAGO -- The Chicago Department of Health (CDPH) assembled faith leaders across all denominations in Chicago’s 77 neighborhoods to pause in a shared moment of prayer for a safe and healthy holiday season. This moment also offered a reminder for residents to update their COVID and flu shots. CDPH Commissioner Dr. Olusimbo
“Simbo” Ige and CDPH Medical Director Dr. Geraldine Luna stressed the importance of vaccines, especially as we head into cooler temperatures and the holiday season.
“It warms my heart to see the city and the faith community coming together to help raise awareness about the importance of vaccination,” said Dr. Ige. “We may all be tired of hearing and talking about COVID-19 but unfortunately, COVID is still around. On top of that, we have the flu and RSV, which is impacting our senior population, pregnant women and babies.”
“Staying up to date with your annual vaccines remains the best way to protect yourself and those around you from serious illness from all respiratory viruses,” said Dr. Luna. “Also, vaccines help reduce the spread of viruses in the community overall, so more of us can stay healthy
and out ofthe hospital.”
Public health officials brace themselves during this time of year as they typically see a spike in respiratory viruses. Today’s prayers from various Chicagoland pastors show the care they have for the health of their congregations and surrounding communities.
“I am not a doctor, but I rely on doctors, like Dr. Ige and Dr. Luna to stay healthy,” said Frazlier Pope, III, executive pastor of Fellowship Chicago and host of the Chicago Day of Prayer kickoff event. “We are praying that all our members and Chicagoans across the city heed the CDPH’s advice to protect themselves by getting up to date on their vaccines.”
The prayer service kicked off at 10 a.m. at Fellowship Chicago at 4543 S. Princeton Avenue, and in addition to information from the CDPH included prayers from ministers of all denominations and a performance by the Fellowship Chicago Praise Team. Those in attendance could get vaccines on site from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. From 2 – 6 p.m., the prayers went citywide, as congregations prayed in neighborhoods and hosted prayer in their various places of worship.

CHICAGO – Greg Cameron, President and CEO of The Joffrey Ballet, and Anne Kaplan, Board Chair, are pleased to announce the appointment of Farissa Knox as the new President of the Joffrey Women’s Board. Named one of Crains Chicago Business 2024 Notable Black Leaders, Knox joined the Joffrey Women’s Board in the spring of 2019. In 2020, she became Co-Chair of Joffrey Women’s Board Crisis Stabilization and Membership Committees. Knox was elected to the Joffrey Board of Directors in 2021, and in 2023, she served as Co-Chair for the highest-grossing Women’s Board Luncheon in the event’s history.
“Farissa’s incredible energy, pioneering ideas, and sharp eye for philanthropic and strategic planning make her the ideal choice to helm the next chapter of the Joffrey Women’s Board,” said Cameron. “The Women’s
Board represents a dynamic cohort of women who prove time and time again that their dreams for the Joffrey, and the many communities we serve, can become realities.”
“It is an honor to welcome Farissa as the next Joffrey Women’s Board President,” adds Kaplan. “A connector and innovator, Farissa’s smart insights and strong leadership will be pivotal in increasing the impact of Women’s Board’s artistic, educational, and community-driven initiatives.”
Knox said, “My involvement with the Joffrey began in 2014 when my two-year-old daughter started taking Academy classes. The quality of care from her teachers and the joy I witnessed in my daughter inspired me to help make ballet inviting to everyone. My enthusiasm for the Joffrey’s mission and the people who make up this valuable organization has only grown as I have become more deeply involved.”
WRUW is currently in development for their first scripted series based on Knox’s first book. Her self-published memoir Love, Sex and Friendship: In No Particular Order captures Knox’s twenties working, living, and loving in New York City. Enjoying quality time with loved ones living with Alzheimer’s or Dementia
Connecting with a loved one in the middle or late stages of Alzheimer’s can still be meaningful, joyful, and even relaxing. Activities bring comfort and familiar routines, and simple shared moments can become treasured memories for family members of all ages. From little ones to grandparents, everyone can find ways to spend time together. The best activities meet your loved one where they are. Think about what they enjoy, what they can do, and what they feel up to today. Whether it’s a simple game, a nostalgic walk, or just sitting together, being flexible and mindful of their needs is key.
There’s no right or wrong way to do these activities—it’s all about the shared experience. Even chores like folding towels or sweeping the porch can bring comfort through familiar tasks. If something isn’t quite right, try another activity. Here are some ideas for both indoors and outdoors, plus some special holiday-inspired traditions.
Outdoor Activities
Getting outside can be uplifting for everyone. Here are some activities to try:

Founded in 2002, the Women’s Board advances the activities and prominence of The Joffrey Ballet as a leading cultural and educational institution. Members embrace the spirit of philanthropy, expressing their passion for the Joffrey through advocacy and support. The Joffrey Women’s Board is comprised of approximately 160+ of Chicago’s civic and business leaders. • Gardening together: Planting or watering flowers, feeding birds, or raking leaves offers sensory stimulation and a sense of accomplishment.
• Visit a dog park or beach: Watching animals or enjoying the waves and sand can be a peaceful experience.
• Simple yard games: Play catch, toss a ball, or try cornhole for a bit of fun and light exercise.
• Picnic on the porch or in the yard: Bring out coffee, lemonade, or snacks and enjoy the fresh air together.
Indoor Activities
When staying inside, there are plenty of ways to connect and enjoy each other’s company: Listen to favorite music: Whether it’s listening or singing along, music often evokes fond memories.
• Look through photo albums: Old family photos can be a source of comfort and nostalgia.
• Play simple games: Try checkers, Uno, or even a card game they enjoy.
• Craft projects: Make paper cranes, family trees, or collages with recent photos.

• Bake traditional treats: Recipes that have been in the family can bring comfort and joy.
• Watch a favorite holiday movie: Cozy up and enjoy a classic or family favorite.
• Decorate together: Whether it’s Christmas, Thanksgiving, or a birthday, simple decorations can help bring the holiday spirit home.

Stay Safe from Holiday Scams
SPONSORED BY JPMORGANCHASE
The holidays are a time to celebrate with loved ones, not falling victim to scams that can steal your cheer. Falling for a scam can lead to losing money and putting your account and personal information at risk, which can be both time consuming and costly.
Here are some common seasonal scams and tips to help protect yourself:
• Missed packages or problems with delivery: Expecting a package? Be cautious of phishing messages through email or text impersonating delivery services like UPS or FedEx with links to view “missed deliveries.” These links may lead to fake sign-in pages or malware-infected sites. Do not respond to messages requesting personal or financial information, including money or cryptocurrency. Be wary of unexpected packages and avoid scanning QR codes, as they may be attempts to steal your information.
• Online deals that are too good to be true: When shopping online or on social media, buy only from trusted websites and vendors. If purchasing on a platform or marketplace, stay on the platform to complete transactions and communicate with sellers, as protections often only apply when you use the platform. Use payment methods that offer buyer protection, and never send money to strangers or use Zelle for purchases, especially when you can’t confirm the goods exist.
• Phony charities preying on your generosity: The Holidays is also a season of giving. Before you donate money, double-check contact and payment
information for your charity of choice and watch for text, email or phone call solicitations. Like any other unsolicited message, don’t click on links or open attachments that may contain malware or attempt to steal your information.
“Scammers do not discriminate and can target anyone during this festive season. Don’t let your guard down. Always remember that if something seems off, it likely is. By staying alert and informed, we can protect ourselves and our loved ones from falling victim during this holiday season,” said Darius Kingsley, head of Consumer Banking Practices at Chase.
Tips to Avoid Scams:
• Don’t send money to unknown individuals or
for goods or services that you can’t confirm exist.
• Be cautious of friendly messages from strangers on social apps. Scammers might try to build trust before asking for money.
• If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. Watch out for deep discounts or low prices that may be scams.
• If you shop on social media marketplaces, never pay using Zelle—it is the same as cash and you may not get back if there is an issue.

Art Design Chicago’s partner exhibitions seek to showcase these contributions, offering diverse perspectives on Indigenous identity, tradition, and contemporary creative practices.
“Many artists want agency in the creation of their work, but we also want nuance in the interpretation of our works,” said artist Andrea Carlson (Ojibwe/ European descent), who is a co-founder of the Center for Native Futures and is exhibiting and contributing to several of these exhibitions. “If one listens to Native people talk about the content of our own work it becomes hard to paint us with the same brush, and that is a good thing. We are not monolithic, we are diverse, and complex.”
Each of these exhibitions was developed by and in close collaboration with Indigenous artists, historians, and community members, giving Indigenous artists decision-making authority for how their stories are told.

Much of the work in these exhibitions is reflective of the artists’ lived experiences and serves to imagine Indigenous futures free from colonial limitations.
“The Terra Foundation is committed to building relationships with Indigenous partners in Chicago and beyond,” said Sharon Corwin, President and CEO of the Terra Foundation for American Art. “In keeping with our mission to expand narratives of American art, we are proud to support programs by Native artists and the presentation of their work through these extraordinary exhibitions in Chicago that center the voices of Native artists, curators, and scholars of the region, and that make their stories accessible to the larger public.”

Your House In Order
CONTINUED: As you may recall, Mr. A, a widower, had secured a reverse mortgage on his home without the knowledge of his children. It was not until Mr. A had a massive stroke that required him to be placed in a skilled care facility, that costs $20,000 monthly, that the family was made aware of the consequences of Mr. A’s lack of succession planning.
If you have a reverse mortgage that you have NOT been making monthly interest payments on, let your family know what your current principal balance is now. If the principal amount is greater now than the current value of your home, it may already be too late to begin paying interest on your mortgage to freeze your principle balance. However, if your principal balance is less than the current value of your home you or your family may want to consider beginning making monthly interest payments now to freeze the principal balance. Therefore, in most instances, preventing the principal balance from exceeding the value of the property.
Perhaps the most important thing that can be done to secure your home as an asset for you and your family is to create a living trust. A living trust will allow you to control your property without ownership. However, the property must be placed in a trust or taken out of the name of an owner a minimum of five (5) years prior to an owner’s need for long-term care in a facility.
I am saddened to report that Mr. A has passed; may he rest in peace.
Because Mr. A had no plan, his family is now faced with both the loss of their loved one and his property. The mortgage lender is going forward with the foreclosure and the nursing home has placed a $40,000 lien against Mr. A’s estate.
Don’t let what happened to Mr. A’s family happen to yours. Make a plan now!!!
Bye for now, Bren.

New Survey Confirms Impact of Clean Slate Policies in Utah, Pennsylvania, and Michigan
ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Clean Slate Initiative (CSI) announced the results of a groundbreaking survey that provides the first comprehensive confirmation of the effectiveness of Clean Slate policies in Utah, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. Conducted by YouGov, the survey polled 800 individuals with arrest or conviction records to assess how Clean Slate laws are transforming lives by sealing eligible arrest and conviction records.
The survey gathered responses from people who have a past arrest or conviction — a group rarely asked about their experiences in research or surveys, and the results show that Clean Slate policies are delivering tangible benefits. Notably, the survey found that over 40% of respondents whose records were sealed automatically reported improvements in their employment, personal finances, and access to public assistance. Additionally, 35% of these respondents reported better family relationships, and 34% noted improved mental health and self-esteem.
“These findings are the first confirmation that Clean Slate laws are working as intended—empowering people to rebuild their
lives without being held back by past mistakes,” said Dr. Laura Chavez, Director of Research and Data at The Clean Slate Initiative.
“People who have earned a second chance should have a fair opportunity to fully participate in society. We will continue to evaluate the effectiveness of Clean Slate policies, and it’s promising that people reported noticeable benefits after state-initiated record sealing. With further study, we are confident that we’ll continue to see that removing barriers helps individuals, families, and communities thrive.”
Key Survey Findings: Employment and Financial Stability: 42% of respondents with automatically sealed records reported improvements in employment and personal finances.
Family and Mental Health: 35% of respondents experienced improved family relationships, and 34% reported positive mental health and self-esteem changes.
Awareness Gap: Despite the success of Clean Slate laws, over half of eligible individuals in Utah, Pennsylvania, and Michigan were unaware of their state’s Clean Slate law—highlighting the need for broader outreach and education.
Widespread Support: 78% of the sample, all of whom are directly impacted by the legal system, support Clean Slate policies, with support exceptionally high among Black respondents (88%).
Since the passage of Clean Slate laws in Pennsylvania (2018), Utah (2019), and Michigan (2020), millions of eligible records have been sealed without people having to navigate burdensome and costly petition-based processes. Instead, Clean Slate laws shift the burden from individuals to the state, providing relief to people who often face obstacles like expensive legal fees and complex processes.
“The survey underscores the transformative potential of these laws, but it also highlights a critical need for ongoing education and outreach to ensure more people benefit from record sealing,” added Sheena Meade, Chief Executive Officer of The Clean Slate Initiative. “As Clean Slate policies continue to build momentum in states across the country, we hope this research can help lawmakers understand the need for investing in public notification and awareness to maximize the
benefits for individuals, families, and communities.”
About the Survey:
The Clean Slate Initiative commissioned the survey, which YouGov conducted in collaboration with Dr. Nyron Crawford, Associate Professor of Political Science at Temple University, polled 800 individuals with arrest or conviction records in Utah, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. The respondents reflected diverse demographic backgrounds and were surveyed about their experiences with Clean Slate laws, employment, housing, mental health, and awareness of their eligibility for record sealing.
The full survey report is available on The Clean Slate Initiative’s website.
Why This Matters:
More than 70 million Americans live with past arrest or conviction records, which can create lifelong barriers to employment, housing, and education. Clean Slate laws aim to break down these barriers, offering a second chance to those who meet the requirements, which includes remaining crime-free for a period of time determined by state law. By automating the sealing of
eligible records, these laws ensure individuals have access to meaningful opportunities to more fully participate in their communities and the workforce.
The Clean Slate Initiative is a non-profit organization that engages bipartisan support to pass and implement laws that automatically seal eligible records for people who meet the requirements. The organization works to build a future where people will no longer be defined by their records and have a fair opportunity to work, get an education, and achieve their full potential.
