HARPER TO CONTINUE ADVOCATING FOR HAIR DIVERSITY

CHICAGO - State Rep. Sonya Harper, D-Chicago, is working to improve access to culturally appropriate and respectful haircare with new legislation that will train hairdressers to better tend to the needs of people of diverse cultures and backgrounds.

“When someone goes to the barbershop or beauty salon, they want to leave feeling confident,” Harper said. “An essential part of that is hairdressers being aware of different hair textures response to products, cutting routines, treatments, and color mixtures.”

Harper recently introduced House Bill 5879, requiring that a person seeking licensure as a cosmetologist complete training on diverse hair types and textures, including curl, coil, or wave patterns, hair strand thicknesses, and volumes of hair.

“When we ensure that individual differences are recognized in salons and barbershops, we foster an inclusive environment where everyone feels comfortable,” Harper said. “That’s why I’m working to raise the bar on professional standards in hairdressing across Illinois.”

PARK HOSPITAL EARNS AN “A“ HOSPITAL SAFETY GRADE FROM LEAPFROG GROUP

Chicago, Ill. – Jackson Park Hospital & Medical Center earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit watchdog focused on patient safety. Leapfrog assigns an “A”, “B”, “C”, “D”, or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on over 30 performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent them.

“Jackson Park Hospital & Medical Center is dedicated to providing compassionate and high-quality healthcare for the patients on the South Side of Chicago. We take pride in being acknowledged as one of the few hospitals in Illinois to have received and “A” for safety during Leapfrog’s Fall 2024 grading period. This was a team effort on the part of the entire Jackson Park Hospital Family,” states, Dr. William Dorsey, chairman and CEO of the hospital.

Serving the inner-city of the South Shore community since 1921, Jackson Park Hospital provides all major services that are available at most acute general hospitals, including an outpatient center and emergency services.

“Achieving an “A” Hospital Safety Grade is a significant accomplishment for Jackson Park,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “It reflects enormous dedication to patients and their families and the whole community should be proud. I extend congratulations to Jackson Park Hospital and Medical Center, its leadership, clinicians and staff for their tireless efforts to put patients first.”

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade stands as the only hospital ratings program focused solely on preventable medical errors, infections and injuries that kill more than 500 patients a day in the United States. This program is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.

Power Up Academy Receives City Colleges of Chicago Accreditation

Continued from page 1

In mid-November, nine Power Up Academy participants received their certification. They are now qualified to work full-time at ComEd or a sponsoring engineering firm, and they can use their college credits to apply towards a related degree program at the City Colleges of Chicago.

Laticia Holbert, Senior Manager of Workforce Development at ComEd, said Power Up Academy took a little more than two years to develop because ComEd wanted to be thoughtful because they knew it would address a need within the company and some of the engineering partners, as the industry is looking into the clean energy transition.

“We took a look at some entry level roles that had requirements that needed some updates. We found a perfect intersection, within ComEd and also throughout those engineering companies, where we were able to tackle having entry level talent without having so many of those requirements that weren’t truly needed,” Holbert said.

“ComEd is truly leading the way in creating that diverse pipeline to local talent,” she said.

Revolution Workshop does the training, recruitment and worked with City Colleges on the accreditation piece. Holbert said that City Colleges of Chicago has been a partner with ComEd in various ways. With Power Up Academy and the partnership, it is s a great way for participants to marry the skills they are learning in the program with the curriculum at Kennedy-King College and Dawson Tech. The program creates a pathway to allow participants to be ready and available to access jobs as part of the Clean Energy transition, where it is estimated that it could bring as many as 150,000 jobs to the state by 2050.

In 2023, the Power Up Academy had its first cohort graduate. The program gave the participants the technical skills they needed including design tech, work coordinators, and permit analysts. Holbert said the program is unique because it takes barriers out of the way and enables people to receive the training, they need to get the jobs that are available. She added the program has a high job placement rate at 80%. Those who graduate go into full-time roles with ComEd and their partnering local engineering companies.

“City Colleges of Chicago is committed to supporting students across the Chicagoland area with educational opportunities that prepare them for a variety of high growth, good paying careers, including those in the utility and construction sectors,” Dr. Webb Walker, President of Kennedy-King College, said in a press release. “Through our partnership with ComEd, we are providing Power Up Academy participants with an opportunity to earn college credit hours during their technical services training, ensuring that more women and diverse students who have been underrepresented in the STEM fields are able to enter and advance in this industry.”

Holbert said the Power Up Academy program is lifechanging because the salary from the job changes the trajectory of the graduate, their family, their community and can be a representation that can give hope to others.

Community Investment Corporation Announces $15 Million Gift from Philanthropist MacKenzie Scott

CHICAGO – Community Investment Corporation (CIC), a Chicago non-profit lender that finances the acquisition, rehabilitation, and preservation of affordable rental housing, today announced a $15 million unrestricted gift from renowned philanthropist MacKenzie Scott. This transformational gift marks the largest individual gift ever received in CIC’s 50-year history, helping advance its mission to support community development efforts in underinvested neighborhoods across Chicagoland, with a focus on affordable housing and economic equity.

“We are deeply honored and profoundly grateful for this second generous gift from MacKenzie Scott,” said Stacie Young, President and CEO of Community Investment Corporation. “This funding allows us to expand our efforts in providing crucial support for affordable housing and community development that not only strengthens neighborhoods but also fosters generational wealth for the small developers leading this work. Thanks to Ms. Scott’s transformational gift, we’re able to offer funding to address housing challenges faced by communities lacking access to capital throughout Chicago.”

In 2020, Scott awarded her first gift to CIC of $8 million, which was the largest individual gift in the organization’s history until now. Half of this initial gift enabled CIC to launch the Community Equity Partner (CEP) pilot program, aimed at bridging the equity gap for small to mid-sized developers who often lack access to equity capital. Large real estate investors can readily access equity capital, which allows them to use less money out of pocket for transactions. Yet few funds exist for smaller developers focusing on small buildings. Additionally, the small, local diverse responsible owner-operators that CIC serves often do not have the wealthy networks that some other developers typically have. CIC’s innovative pilot uniquely ad-

dressed this access to equity capital challenge, and Ms. Scott’s 2020 gift allowed CIC to develop and launch this ordinarily high-risk product.

To date, CIC has committed funding for eight transactions through its CEP Fund, providing $3.8 million in equity financing to improve and preserve 136 units across buildings ranging from two to 42 units. The goal of this pilot is to demonstrate that more equity funds should serve small to mid-sized local developers who invest in smaller buildings.

“CIC has been a valuable key to my success as a local real estate investor, providing me with the capital to compete against larger, out-of-state investors who often overlook the needs of our community,” said Local Investor Dr. Leon Stenneth. “Thanks to this program I’ve been able to acquire the largest building in my portfolio to date at 42 units, empowering me to scale the portfolio, work with Institutional Equity Partners and learn more about Asset Management.”

CIC has a long history of partnering with developers, property owners, and community organizations to address the housing challenges faced by under-resourced neighborhoods. With this new $15 million gift, CIC is positioned to make an even greater impact by continuing to invest in housing preservation, expanding its reach, and fostering vibrant, sustainable communities.

“Housing is essential to a healthy, stable life, and maintaining and revitalizing Chicago area affordable housing buildings is a core mission of CIC. MacKenzie Scott’s decision to support CIC with another large gift reinforces the importance of CIC’s mission and the work we’ve been doing,” said David Dykstra, Community Investment Corporation Board Chair. “This gift will strengthen our ability to lend to local developers who provide the housing that communities rely on. By investing in affordable housing, we’re supporting the long-term vitality and resilience of neighborhoods across Chicagoland.”

ive Key Discoveries About Alzheimer’s in 2024

This year marked a significant leap forward in Alzheimer’s research and awareness, with progress in treatment options, diagnostic tools, and understanding risk factors. As 2024 draws to a close, here’s a look at five important breakthroughs that are shaping the future of Alzheimer’s care and prevention.

“After my 22 years in classrooms and leading Chicago Public Schools, I’ve seen Chicago students do all the right things to prepare for their futures, only to be thwarted by systemic barriers like the rising cost of college, which then changes the course of their lives,” said Dr. Janice K. Jackson, CEO of Hope Chicago. “With Hopecoming, we celebrate the collective efforts of Chicago’s business, philanthropic, and civic leaders, who are helping Hope Chicago turn these dreams into reality. Like us, our supporters understand that education beyond high school—whether it’s a degree, career training, or an apprenticeship—is the key to unlocking economic independence, and by extension, building stronger communities and a more resilient economy.”

of our hometown city and brightens its future, and McDonald’s is proud to join the growing coalition supporting debt-free access to higher education for Chicago students,” said Michael Gonda, Senior VP and Chief Impact Officer at McDonald’s USA. “This model is deeply connected to our purpose of feeding and fostering community, and we know that its impact will drive meaningful outcomes for multiple generations.”

“Investing in Hope Chicago directly expands access to higher education, career advancement, upskilling, and good jobs – for two generations of Chicagoans at a time,” said Stephen Harris, President of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois. “By empowering families in this way, we’re strengthening their futures and building healthier, more resilient communities. When people have the resources to thrive, everyone benefits.”

In the three years since its launch, Hope Chicago has become a transformative force in Illinois’ higher education landscape, dedicated to breaking down barriers faced by low-income families in underserved neighborhoods. With a mission to provide access to debt-free degrees and professional certifications for two generations within each family (students and parents/guardians), Hope Chicago has enrolled more than 1,800 Scholars in higher education institutions and workforce programs across Illinois. By focusing efforts in five high schools on the South and West Sides of Chicago, the organization is building a supportive ecosystem that empowers students and their families to pursue educational aspirations without the barrier of student loans.

Wednesday evening marked a new milestone for Hope Chicago with significant new and renewed investments by Chicago’s business community, including:

$1 Million donation from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois

$1 Million donation from BMO

$1 Million donation from McDonald’s USA

These early investors join a growing list of individuals, foundations, and businesses committing to Hope Chicago’s Promise Fund, a public-private partnership to address the growing need for postsecondary education and training, especially among low-income Black and Latino students. The initiative will help 4,000 students and 1,000 parents access and complete higher education debt-free over the next five years. Through strategic partnerships and evaluation by the University of Chicago, the program aims to reshape the accessibility and success of higher education for underrepresented communities.

“Hope Chicago strengthens the fabric

“Working to help eliminate generational, systemic barriers to education and workforce opportunities for Chicagoans is an investment that drives real financial progress for our Chicago community,” said Eric Smith, Vice Chair, BMO. “BMO was Hope Chicago’s first corporate partner in 2021 and we’re proud to continue our support, to help strengthen the community we serve, aligned to BMO’s Purpose, to Boldly Grow the Good in business and life.”

This month, Hope Chicago released its Year 3 Impact Report, highlighting significant progress in the implementation of its model:

Hope Scholar’s first cohort (Class of 2022) has produced a 66% increase in the number of students enrolled through two full academic years when comparing the Class of 2021.

The percentage of CPS students enrolling in postsecondary education pathways grew from 51% (prior to Hope Chicago) to 74% (after the first cohort). This figure rose to 78% in 2023 and 81% in 2024 with the subsequent cohorts.

Latino student enrollment in the program surged from 31% before Hope Chicago to 85% in 2024.

Black student enrollment increased from 55% to 70% in Hope’s first year, with 75% of Black CPS students at partner high schools now enrolled in postsecondary pathways.

In its inaugural year, the Parent Scholar program enrolled 135 parents, with 85% persisting in their program pathways and showing progress by the following year.

The economic implications of increasing postsecondary education access are profound. A recent Georgetown University study projects that by 2030, 72% of jobs in the U.S. will require postsecondary education or training. Yet, currently, only 54% of adults earn a credential after high school. In Chicago, the situation is even more alarming, with just 27% of graduates from neighborhood high schools expected to obtain a credential.

Blood tests for Alzheimer’s made significant strides in 2024, providing a more accessible and less invasive way to diagnose the disease. These advancements improve early detection and ensure that more people can access the treatments and resources they need.

3. Calls for Better Post-Diagnosis Support

Many individuals living with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers have voiced the need for more robust support systems following a dementia diagnosis. From emotional counseling to practical resources, this ongoing conversation highlights the importance of comprehensive care and guidance during a challenging time.

4. Wildfire Smoke Increases Dementia Risk

In a surprising discovery, researchers found that exposure to wildfire smoke poses a higher risk for dementia than other forms of air pollution. This finding emphasizes the need for environmental awareness and protective measures for at-risk populations.

5. A Shift in How Alzheimer’s is Defined

Scientists are redefining Alzheimer’s by focusing on the physical changes in the brain—such as the buildup of amyloid plaques and tau tangles—rather than relying solely on memory loss as a defining symptom. This shift in perspective may lead to earlier and more accurate diagnoses, allowing interventions to begin sooner.

The initiative will help 4,000 students and 1,000 parents access and complete higher education debt-free over the next five years. Through strategic partnerships and evaluation by the University of Chicago, the program aims to reshape the accessibility and success of higher education for underrepresented communities.

“Hope Chicago strengthens the fabric of our hometown city and brightens its future, and McDonald’s is proud to join the growing coalition supporting debt-free access to higher education for Chicago students,” said Michael Gonda, Senior VP and Chief Impact Officer at McDonald’s USA. “This model is deeply connected to our purpose of feeding and fostering community, and we know that its impact will drive meaningful outcomes for multiple generations.”

“Investing in Hope Chicago directly expands access to higher education, career advancement, upskilling, and good jobs – for two generations of Chicagoans at a time,” said Stephen Harris, President of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of

Illinois. “By empowering families in this way, we’re strengthening their futures and building healthier, more resilient communities. When people have the resources to thrive, everyone benefits.”

JAMAICAN REGGAE ARTIST JAH9

RETURNS WITH BOLD NEW SINGLE, “MATCH”

Reggae artist Jah9 returns today with her latest single, “Match,” via VP Records. Building on her previous release, “Open Heart,” this new song continues her playful, feminine, and mature re-entry into the music scene, delving into themes of submission, attraction, respect, love, and fantasy. Produced by J.L.L. (known for his work with Drake, Smino, and Masego), “Match” seamlessly blends reggae undertones with rich harmonic layers – with lyrics that reveal a more risqué and open side of Jah9.

“Match” serves as the second release in Jah9’s Open Heart Project, a four-part series that explores the stages of relationships—from inception to growth, disillusionment, and reconciliation. As the song “Open Heart” served as a prelude, chronicling her yearslong journey of self-discovery in Tanzania, “Match” adds another layer, offering a more nuanced perspective on love.

“‘Match’ is a song about courtship, new love, and the standards by which we make these choices,” Jah9 explains. “It’s an ode to the freedom a woman feels to fully express herself in the presence of the right kind of man.”

With its neo-reggae soul sound, “Match” creates an atmosphere that is both moody and sultry. The music video, intentionally conceptualized and scripted by Jah9 as the first in a series of storytelling visuals, invites viewers into her world through scenes marked by sensuality, vulnerability, and deep human connection.

Building on the success of her albums New Name (2013), 9 (2016), and Note to Self (2020), Jah9’s influence in reggae continues to grow, highlighted by her songwriting and co-production contributions to Kabaka Pyramid’s The Kalling, which won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 2023.

“Match” follows her recent “Jah9 in Japan” tour, where she introduced her distinctive live performances to nearly a dozen cities—including Tokyo, Osaka, and Hiroshima—for the first time this October and November.

The single is now available on all digital platforms.

Jah9’s journey embodies balance, seamlessly blending the spiritual with the physical through her artistry that fuses roots reggae, dub, jazz, and soul. Born Janine Cun -

ningham in Falmouth, Jamaica, she honed her voice amid the vibrant energy of Kingston, drawing inspiration from her social worker mother and preacher father. Embracing the teachings of Ethiopian emperor Haile Selassie I during her university years, she adopted the name Jah9 and emerged as a key figure in the “Roots Revival” movement. Her debut album, New Name, released in 2013, solidified her place as a powerful force for change in reggae.

After releasing two successful albums with VP Records—9 (2016) and Note to Self (2020)— Jah9 embarked on a transformative journey to Tanzania during the pandemic, deepening her spiritual practice. She returned with the lead single “Open Heart” from her upcoming project and, in October 2024, embarked on her first tour of Japan. This tour blended her Yoga on Dub sessions with live performances across cities like Tokyo, Kobe, and Osaka, culminating in a finale celebration on November 11. Featured in The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, The FADER, Billboard, and more, Jah9 uplifts audiences worldwide by intertwining music with wellness and spirituality, creating a holistic experience that transcends traditional concerts.

The State of Illinois continues to prioritize its tourism industry as millions of visitors spend billions of dollars annually across Illinois, boosting economic development and supporting jobs in the industry. Illinois welcomed 2.16 million international visitors in 2023, reflecting a substantial 39% increase from the previous year, according to data provided by Tourism Economics. This surge in international visitation showcases Illinois as an increasingly sought-after global destination. Additionally, international visitors injected nearly $2.7 billion into Illinois’ economy in 2023, representing a 47% increase in spending compared to the previous year.

“Visitors from near and far continue to venture to Illinois to enjoy the Middle of Everything,” said Speaker Pro Tempore Jehan Gordon-Booth (D – Peoria). “This grant funding will help showcase Illinois’ appeal to an international audience while growing our award-winning tourism industry.”

The top five markets for visitation to Illinois in 2023 include Canada, Mexico, India, the U.K. and Germany.

Canada emerged as the leading market for international visitation, with an impressive increase from 425,000 to 627,000 visitors, representing a substantial 48% growth.

Overseas visitors (defined as visitors

not from Canada and Mexico) also showed significant growth, surging from 963,000 visitors in 2022 to 1,347,000 in 2023, marking a 40% increase.

India demonstrated substantial growth in visitors to Illinois, with an increase of 55% from 2019 to 2023.

Mexico contributed to the upward trend, with visitation numbers climbing from 164,000 to 183,000, reflecting a notable 12% rise.

extremely difficult discussions that will expose, illustrate, and offer suggestions of resolve through legislation and grassroot organizing.

“Chicago is one of the true meccas of the Civil Rights movement and has benefitted from so many of the van guard organizations that were birthed in many of our neighborhoods. Therefore, it is fitting that lawmakers, civic leaders, and African American business leaders from around the nation come here to discuss not only political and health issues, but also address gun violence in our communities, creating generational wealth and enhancing our educational system.” says Illinois Legislative Black Caucus Foundation Executive Director Tiffany D. Hightower.

Joint ILBC Chairperson Representative Ammons adds, “This year’s summit will focus on sustaining, enhancing, and creating models of progress in wake of the recent elections. Collectively we must work tirelessly to improve the lives of all workers by supporting policies that strengthen workplace protections and expand economic opportunities. We not only have to prepare our collective agenda to address the anticipated challenges of the future but continue to address the historical inequalities that have plagued communities of color for generations. “

“The 2024 ILBCF summit comes at a critical time in the history of this nation where many uncertainties and unanswered questions must be addressed. With media reports of potential dismantling of federal agencies that were originally created as protections against discrimination and biases, it is imperative that we have a common agenda that is inclusive of pushing back against such dangerous actions.” Says Bishop Larry D. Trotter of the Sweet Holy Spirit Church of Chicago.

The two-day summit will offer numerous panel discussions that will bring attention to hardcore disparities in healthcare, economics, social programs, voter suppression, generational gaps, crime, gender equality and the criminal justice system.

The ILBCF hopes to build the capacity of community leaders to shape programs, policy, and care and to engage in evidence-based advocacy. But to also share community-driven practices and initiatives to tackle various disparities, including research engagement, innovative programming, policy/advocacy, and other unique topics.

Robinhood Launches

First HBCU Partnership with Howard University

(TriceEdneyWire.com) - Robinhood, the popular financial app, has partnered with Howard University as its first historically Black college and university (HBCU) participant for its Money Drills program, extending comprehensive financial education to student-athletes. The partnership, announced earlier this month at Howard’s campus, underscores the critical need to advance financial inclusion and build generational wealth within historically underserved communities.

The initiative comes at a crucial time when college athletes are navigating new opportunities to profit from their name, image, and likeness (NIL) rights. Howard University becomes the ninth Division I institution to join the Money Drills program, which has already demonstrated success at other universities nationwide.

“Technology serves as a powerful democratizing force in the financial system,” said Mary Elizabeth Taylor, VP of Global Government and External Affairs at Robinhood Markets. “Money Drills is yet another way Robinhood is driving financial education in innovative ways, and we are thrilled to collaborate with our first HBCU.”

The announcement event featured Howard Athletics Director Kery Davis, Howard School of Business Dean Anthony Wilbon, former NFL player Brandon Copeland, and Washington Wizards alumnus Etan Thomas. Students participated in financial education workshops led by Planned To a T, featuring guest lectures from Cope-

Black Church

land.

The program’s launch at Howard addresses a critical need in professional sports, where financial difficulties after retirement are common. Studies show that 16 percent of NFL players file for bankruptcy within 12 years of retiring, while 60 percent of NBA players face financial hardship after their careers end.

“This is long overdue as many students lack ade-

quate education on financial and contract management,” said Dr. Mariko Carson, Howard University’s Director of the Office of Graduate Affairs. “The Money Drills collaboration empowers us to jointly promote an inclusive and sustainable approach to economic growth in our communities and beyond.”

Howard joins a distinguished list of institutions in the Money Drills program, including Florida State University, Duke University, and UC Berkeley. The program has proven effective, with 95 percent of participating students reporting improved financial management skills over its two-year history.

Kaiya Creek, a Howard University Women’s Basketball Player and Master’s of Finance student, emphasized the program’s importance: “As a student-athlete, I’ve come to realize that my name, image, and likeness are powerful assets. The partnership between Howard and Robinhood provides me the chance to showcase what I have learned from Money Drills and inspire others about the importance of financial literacy.”

While Howard marks Robinhood’s first HBCU partnership, company officials expressed their commitment to expanding the Money Drills program to additional HBCUs nationwide, furthering their mission of democratizing financial education across diverse academic communities.

How to Keep Kids’ Minds Active During the Holiday Break

(StatePoint) Even a short vacation from school can cause learning loss and leave kids feeling behind when they return to the classroom. Fortunately, there are many ways to keep minds active during the holiday break, some of which will rein-

force the concepts they are learning in school. Here are a few of them:

Vacation R eading: Whether you’re traveling for the holidays or sticking close to home, curling up with a book is a great way to spend some of the inevitable down time. At the start of the break, hit up the library so everyone in the family will have plenty to read on subjects of interest to them. You might also consider giving at least one title to each gift recipient on your list this year to emphasize the idea that books can be treasured objects.

Online Math Tools: Casio’s suite of engaging education resources can help ensure students keep up their skills during the holidays. Those with the fx-9750GIII graphing calculator or (other easy-to-use models with hundreds of functions) will find plenty to challenge them when they check out Casio’s expansive resource library of activities, Python programs and more, all of which are available for free online. From calculating slopes and finding derivatives to evaluating inferences and predications based on data, the resource includes exercises for every area of mathematical focus, including calculus, geometry and statistics.

Historical Day Trip: Take a day trip to a historic site to bring the past to life. Whether you visit a battlefield, the home of a notable figure, or a historically preserved city center, your trip will provoke discussion and keep minds engaged. If taking a scheduled tour is not possible due to limited holiday hours, do a bit of research on the site beforehand to give your family more context about what they will be seeing. This will make the trip more enjoyable and engaging.

Exercise: Staying active is not just good for physical health, it’s also good for the mind and soul. With no P.E. class on the schedule however, kids may be missing out on their daily dose of exercise. Be sure to go on a walk or bike ride each day or get out in the yard for some touch football or frisbee. If the weather is frightful, visit a yoga studio or even stay home and do an exercise class on YouTube.

This holiday season, balancing educational and healthy activities with fun and relaxation can help ensure your students return to school focused, engaged and ready to start a brand new semester.
