Dream Vaults Provide Essential Fresh Produce to Communities
Continued from page 1
BY TIA CAROL JONES
Dawson founded Dion’s Chicago Dream with the goal to decrease food insecurity and improve health outcomes in communities across the city by delivering fresh produce to people.
Dion’s Chicago Dream delivers fresh fruits and vegetables to more than 20,000 residents per week in more than 159 zip codes.
With the Dream Vaults, Dawson and his team are able to reach more people. The dream vault works similarly to a delivery locker. People who are enrolled in the program, receive a text telling them they can pick-up their items from the vault on a specific date. Those people put in a code and receive their items.
Dawson said the dream vaults enables residents in need to receive their products in a dignified way. In addition to the newly placed dream vault in Chatham, there is also a vault in Englewood, Morgan Park and West Lawn.
Dawson said he wanted to put the dream vault in Chatham because Discover supported the idea of having a dream vault there from the beginning. Dawson said that for Discover, with them creating so many jobs in Chatham at the Shine Bright Center, they wanted to be participants in the community, and not extractors of the community.
“They agreed that in order to be a good business in the community, they had to make sure the community was being taken care of, and that’s what we’re able to do with the vault,” Dawson said.
With the other three vaults, Dawson said Dion’s
Chicago Dream spoke with the companies where those vaults are located, and they agreed to let the organization place them there because they want to be good community partners. He said that because his program provides a great product, organizations and companies want to partner with them because they see it as a way to stabilize those communities, by providing access to essential items.
“To their credit, those partners agreed it was a great idea. They’d seen the impact and they wanted to be involved,” Dawson said. He added that access to fresh produce is a right, not a privilege.
The dream vaults take all the technology that is used outside of philanthropy and the community, and brings it into the community in a way where it is guaranteed that access to fresh produce is consistent. He said at Dion’s Chicago Dream, they are advancing and innovating with the quality they are providing, as well as making connections and relationships with the people who are picking up the produce.
Dawson said it is vitally important for what he does with Dion’s Chicago Dream to have partners, large and small, support his endeavors to bring fresh produce to those who need it the most.
“They see the hard work and they see the consis
tency, rain, sleet, shine or snow. They see that and they want to be part of it,” he said.
Dawson said that while there is no way, in the foreseeable future, to cure food insecurity, it can be managed. He said there are plans to place more dream vaults in communities, with two slated for the end of the first quarter of 2025.

A Century in the Making: Shedd Aquarium’s Historic Rotunda Reimagined as
the
Wonder of Water Exhibit
Chicago – Shedd Aquarium’s historic rotunda space returns with a new exhibit, Wonder of Water, featuring two bustling habitats brimming with activity – one freshwater and one saltwater ecosystem. Wonder of Water sets the tone for an awe-inspiring journey into the aquatic animal world, where guests can stand at the heart of the aquarium between two distinctly rich environments to immerse themselves in the biodiversity of life beneath the water’s surface. The dynamic, diverse exhibits feature live corals, freshwater plants and a colorful array of fishes, designed to be ever-changing and in a state of growth.
“The message of this exhibit is a simple one: water is what makes the dazzling biodiversity on Earth possible. Water is a precious and finite resource,” said Sarah Hezel, vice president of
design and exhibits at Shedd Aquarium. “This space transports our guests out of their lives for a moment to connect with life underwater, to spark our visitors’ curiosity and sense of wonder.”
The planted freshwater exhibit for Wonder of Water at Shedd is one of the largest in the world, featuring more than 5,000 fish swimming in dazzling schools amongst a variety of 50 lush plant species, some over 7 feet tall and growing. On the marine side, vibrant and colorful corals live, grow and thrive in colonies that come in stunning shapes and sizes with 1,500 bold and beautiful reef fishes. Side by side, guests will see the distinct differences and surprising similarities between fresh and saltwater environments.
tion from a terrestrial to an underwater experience, this soundscape elevates the guests’ journey ahead into the world of water.
Additionally, 43 tactile models provide hands-on learning about the various species within rivers and reefs. Informative chats and programming enhance the experience in the rotunda welcoming guests of all ages to engage their senses while exploring the aquatic world. One opportunity will be a water tasting offered daily to experience various salinity levels. Bilingual signage is available throughout the exhibit as well, ensuring accessible aquatic awareness to more audiences.
Holiday Travel Tips for Families Facing Alzheimer’s
Holiday travel can be hectic for just about everyone who does it, but it can be especially challenging for the 266,500 Illinois residents living with Alzheimer’s. Even short trips to visit family and friends during the holidays can be stressful for people with Alzheimer’s and other dementia. While not all living with Alzheimer’s are able to travel, people living with early- and mid-stage Alzheimer’s often do want to attend family gatherings and holiday celebrations. Careful and thoughtful planning can help ensure safety, comfort and holiday enjoyment for everyone involved.
Both habitats are living, growing and thriving ecosystems that will evolve and expand in grand and slight ways each day, meaning every visit will be unique. Each habitat is an impressive 28,110 gallons, totaling 56,220 gallons. Further, the viewing windows are more expansive in height and length than the previous exhibit in the space, making it easier than ever to come eye-to-eye with animals. Guests can walk in between the dual habitats and observe from varying vantage points around the perimeter of each to explore hidden nooks and surprising sights.
Over the near-century history of the aquarium, this rotunda space has served as the first exhibit guests see. First, in 1930, it opened as a 40-foot-diameter rock garden and sunken tropical pool filled with native fishes, turtles and frogs, and then in 1971, it was reimagined and transformed into a 90,000-gallon reef with tropical fish, stingrays and sharks. Now, in its latest evolution, guests uncover both freshwater and saltwater biodiversity in one space and discover the unique colors, shapes, forms and biological adaptations of aquatic life that rely on the most vital resource on our blue planet – water.

Pick a practical destination: Consider everyone’s needs and desires as you plan your trip and discuss the plan with the person living with dementia. Elaborate sightseeing trips or complicated tours may cause anxiety and confusion. And it is always important to consider destinations that have easy access to emergency health services and pharmacies. Simplify your travel itinerary: Try not to overload the person with many directions or too much information.
○ Carry with you an itinerary that includes details about each destination. Give copies to family members or friends you will be visiting or to emergency contacts at home.
○ Travel during the time of day that is best for the person. For example, if he or she becomes tired or more agitated in the late afternoon, avoid traveling at this time.
○ Allow plenty of time for rest and don’t over-schedule.
Keep travel necessities close: If traveling by air, keep necessary medications, up-todate medical information, a list of emergency contacts and photocopies of important documents in your carry-on baggage. For longer car trips, make sure water and snacks are available.
Brief your host: If you are staying with family or friends, make sure everyone knows what to expect. If you will be staying in a hotel, consider informing the staff ahead of time of your specific needs so they can be prepared to assist you.
· Be prepared: Environmental changes or new locations can cause anxiety and agitation in people with Alzheimer’s. These events can also trigger wandering. Monitor your loved one closely for signs of stress or confusion. Keep them close to you in crowded, unfamiliar places.
“The holidays should be a fun and relaxing time for friends and family, including people living with dementia,” said Delia Jervier, Executive Director Alzheimer’s Association Illinois Chapter. “By keeping your loved one’s needs top of mind for all travel decisions can allow for less stress and confusion and provide a joyous time for all.”

From Ancient Egypt to Native America, the Global Story of Turquoise
Y JOSEPH DENABURG, LEVY’S FINE JEWELRY
December babies are lucky to have several birthstone options, and turquoise is one of the most cherished. This stone is celebrated for its uniqueness; each piece of turquoise has a distinct pattern or “matrix,” making no two stones identical. These natural veiny patterns are remnants of the host rock on which the turquoise forms.
Turquoise’s Unique Colors and Origins
Turquoise varies in color from greenish-gray to sky blue, with sky blue being the most desirable and valuable shade. The most prized turquoise comes from Iran, the Sinai Peninsula, and the southwestern United States (Arizona, California, Colorado, and New Mexico). However, it is also mined in countries including Afghanistan, Australia, Chile, China, Mexico, Peru, Tibet, and Turkestan.
Turquoise in Ancient Egypt
Dating back over 7,500 years, turquoise has deep historical roots. Associated with Hathor, the Egyptian goddess of love, motherhood, joy, and music, this sacred stone was used by healers and worn by royalty. Turquoise adorned the tomb of the famous pharaoh Tutankhamun, and one of the oldest turquoise artifacts is a bracelet on the mummified arm of Queen Zar, dating back to Egypt’s first dynasty around 5,500 BC.
The Persian Legacy of Turquoise
For centuries, the vibrant robin’s egg blue turquoise from Persia was considered the most beautiful. Mining in present-day northeastern Iran dates to 4,000 BC. Persian artisans used turquoise in elaborate mosaics, a trend that spread across the world. Its rich blue color symbolized the heavens and decorated the domes of palaces and sacred spaces.
The name “turquoise” comes from the French word “Turquie,” meaning “Turkish stone,” due to its route through Turkey on its way to Europe. While Native Americans valued turquoise with natural patterns, Persian turquoise was prized for its purity and lack of inclusions. Today, the term “Persian turquoise” is often used as a quality descriptor rather than an origin, indicating turquoise with a cleaner appearance and without black or brown matrix patterns.
Turquoise in South American History
The ancient civilizations of the Aztecs, Toltecs, and Olmecs cherished turquoise, using it to adorn “death masks” reserved for nobility. In Mayan culture, turquoise was even more sacred, reserved solely for the gods and their images.
Turquoise in North America
Native American tribes in North America shared a deep admiration for turquoise. The mines of New Mexico and Arizona have produced high-quality turquoise since 200 BC, making it a key item for trade among native tribes. The Apache held turquoise in high esteem, believing it enhanced the accuracy of arrows and spears. Medicine men often wore turquoise to reflect their respected status.
While Native Americans initially used turquoise in carvings and mosaics, they began crafting unique turquoise and silver jewelry in the late 1800s when introduced to new metalworking techniques by Europeans. This iconic style soon became highly sought after.
Mystical Qualities of Turquoise
Throughout history, turquoise has been a popular choice for amulets. Believed to dispel hatred, ease headaches, and sense danger through color changes, turquoise was thought to protect its wearer. In the Middle Ages, it was even believed to absorb evil directed toward the wearer, but only if the gemstone was given as a gift, not purchased.

Get Your House In Order
Now Is the Time
When I began writing this column I imagined it to serve as a gentle reminder to my aging co-hearts to TCB (Take Care of Business) today, because tomorrow may be too late. I never imagined that the information that I share each week would attract younger readers, but it has. I guess if I had given it more thought I would have seen that the lack of planning of elders falls on the shoulders of their younger relatives. So, although my intent was to serve as a reminder to elders, to get their house in order, the message has resonated with much younger folks.
Attorney Rose Joshua, one of the attorneys that I team with to develop estate plans, says that many of her clients, in their 40’s-60’s, are not aware that Medicare does not pay for the long-term care that their parents or grandparents are receiving. They only seek legal counsel when they learn that a monthly long-term care bill of $10-20,000 a month has been received by their loved one and that a lien has been filed against their loved one’s assets for payment. At this point, Attorney Joshua says that she can only offer suggestions to mitigate the family’s problem, not eliminate it.
Attorney Joshua, after implementing some of the tactics that she uses to mitigate the adverse effects of the lien; she calls on me to further assist the family.
Bye for now, Bren.

Rebuilding Illinois: I-270 Mississippi River bridge reaches milestone in Madison County
“Rebuild Illinois has increased safety, efficiency, and opportunities for Illinoisans all over the state – and the work on the I-270 bridges will extend those benefits to even more communities,” said Gov. Pritzker.
COLLINSVILLE – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that work to replace two Interstate 270 bridges over the Mississippi River in Madison County, a cornerstone project in Gov. JB Pritzker’s Rebuild Illinois capital program, has reached the midway point with the completion of the south span. The joint project with the Missouri Department of Transportation is on track to wrap up in 2026.
“Rebuild Illinois has increased safety, efficiency, and opportunities for Illinoisans all over the state – and the work on the I-270 bridges will extend those benefits to even more communities,” said Gov. Pritzker.
“Reaching the halfway point of this vital project is a significant milestone, made possible by the collaboration and dedication of our teams on both sides of the river. Together, we’re revitalizing infrastructure that will improve travel and mobility for residents and travelers for years to come.”
The first of the twin bridge openings is expected to occur over four weeks in the following stages:
Stage 1: Tentatively scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 8, eastbound I-270 traffic will be shifted to the new south span on two eastbound lanes, weather permitting.
Stage 2: In January, weather permitting, westbound I-270 traffic will be shifted to the new span using a temporary crossover just
west of the Canal Bridge. Westbound traffic also will have two lanes across the new bridge. Eastbound and westbound traffic will use the new bridge while the adjacent structure is built over the next two years.
Between stages 1 and 2, construction will take place for the westbound pavement connecting to the new bridge. The section of pavement cannot be constructed until the existing eastbound lanes are removed.
The overall $496.2 million joint project with MoDOT will replace the existing bridges with two structures that have wider shoulders to accommodate the eventual expansion of I-270 to three lanes in each direction. A companion $35.4 million MoDOT project will reconstruct the Riverview Drive interchange just west of the bridge.
“Reaching the halfway point of this critical project for the region is a testament to the partnership and hard-working teams in both Illinois and Missouri,” said Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman. “We appreciate your continued patience traveling through this active work zone. We look forward to delivering the second bridge so the public can enjoy another Rebuild Illinois investment that improves safety, mobility and quality of life.”
Construction started in late 2022 and is anticipated to be complete in 2026. The public can expect delays and should allow extra
time for trips through this area. Drivers in any work zone are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment. Visit the project website, 270mrb. org, for more information, including project maps, fact sheets and construction timeline.
“This project is only the latest improvement to come from a historically beneficial partnership between MoDOT and IDOT,” said MoDOT Director Ed Hassinger. “This bridge is a critical connection into the northern part of the St. Louis metropolitan region and a key link in the national freight network. We’re thrilled to work together to meet this milestone and keep this project on track to deliver another benefit to the region.”
Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve more than 3,200 miles of highway and nearly 9 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Five of Rebuild Illinois include approximately $16 billion of improvements statewide on 6,541 miles of highway, 686 bridges and 986 additional safety improvements.

The exhibition will feature a collection of 53 works of art and 13 artifacts that has never been seen in the U.S. More than a museum show, this arts center experience will immerse guests in Japanese Edo culture through several interactive exhibits, from a serene outdoor Japanese garden to an anime exhibit. The exhibition is organized by the Cleve Carney Museum of Art in collaboration with the Edoardo Chiossone Museum of Oriental Art of Genoa, Italy and with the support of MondoMostre.
The exhibition showcases 53 artworks by the masters of Ukiyo-e art of Japan’s flourishing Edo Period (1603-1868). Works by acclaimed artists such as Hokusai and Hiroshige offer a window into life during a time when the city of Edo (present-day Tokyo) thrived as the center of Japan’s economy and culture. “Ukiyo-e,” often translated as “Images of the floating world,” refers to ephemeral Japanese paintings and woodblock prints that depicted life in Edo, when pleasurable attributes of life were encouraged, distant from the control of the military shogunate power. “Ukiyo-e” artwork showcased the city’s fashions and lively streets, and its famous places and entertainment districts, including the theater, cultural and arts quarters.
The collection includes original painted works, intricate color woodblock prints and instruments and other beautifully lacquered objects and more, making each work truly one-of-a-kind. In addition to the collection, the exhibition will immerse guests in Edo culture through several interactive areas, including: a multi-media historical display, peaceful Japanese garden, anime exhibit, children’s area and interactive
Edo experience that features period garments such as Shogun and Kabuki fashion replicas, and more. Special events will take place throughout the length of the exhibition, and a benefit gala will take place Feb. 23 at the MAC.
Widely considered as one of the most recognizable images in the world, the exhibition will feature Hokusai’s iconic masterpiece, The Great Wave off Kanagawa. In addition, visitors will have the rare opportunity to view nine original works by the legendary artist. There will also be 17 works by Hiroshige, particularly known for the “Fifty-Three Stations of the T kaid ” series. Works by 15 of their contemporaries will also be featured, along with several artifacts from daily life in Japan from this period, including popular games, instruments and beauty tools of the time.
Hokusai is widely recognized as one of Japan’s greatest artists, as he was instrumental in developing the genre of ukiyo-e and modernized traditional print styles. He transformed ukiyo-e art into a modern form of graphic art, covering several subjects from portraits of entertainers and kabuki actors, to unique views of the natural world. His eclectic artistry brought the highest development of the ukiyo-e genre, spreading a newfound awareness of current subjects and tastes through the mass production of books, manga and manuals.
Hokusai’s work not only shaped the artistic landscape of the Edo Period and paved the way for Japanese art, he also had a significant influence on impressionists Edgar Degas and Claude Monet, and later Vincent van Gogh, during the Japonisme art movement that spread across Europe in the late 19th century.
The exhibition is organized by the Cleve Carney Museum of Art, with works from The Edoardo Chiossone Museum of Oriental Art of Genoa, Italy that was originally collected by Edoardo Chiossone (1833-1898) and whose collection is known world-
wide for the quality of art and its remarkable state of conservation. The featured ukiyo-e collection on loan will be curated by professor and art historian Rossella Menegazzo of The University of Milan as part of the larger exhibition at the MAC and CCMA, curated by Justin Witte.
Support for “Hokusai and Ukiyo-e: The Floating World, Artworks from the Chiossone Collection” is provided in part by Wight & Company, Ball Horticultural, The Illinois Arts Council, Japanese Chamber of Commerce, the National Endowment for the Arts, DuPage Foundation and the College of DuPage Foundation.

Association of African American Museums Names Vedet ColemanRobinson President & CEO
(Black PR Wire) Washington, D.C. — Vedet Coleman-Robinson, Ph.D., has been named president and CEO of the Association of African American Museums (AAAM). Coleman-Robinson was appointed executive director in March 2019. AAAM’s board of directors recognizes Coleman-Robinson’s vast impact on the non-profit organization.
Under her leadership, AAAM has surpassed its fundraising goals, raising more than $6.5 million; introduced new programs; and seen a surge of more than 250% in membership, with the most popular categories being two-year individual and institutional memberships. She encourages members to carry AAAM’s commitment to servant leadership to their institutions, empowering people in their communities and providing them with more enriching narratives of African and African American history.
“Vedet Coleman-Robinson’s dynamic leadership and innovative approach have been instrumental in enhancing the Association of African American Museums’ reach and impact,” said Omar Ea ton-Martínez, AAAM’s board president. “Her ability to create strategic alliances and appeal to emerging professionals will continue to propel AAAM forward and bolster the organization’s ability to serve as the principal voice for the African American museum movement.”
As AAAM’s executive director, Coleman-Robinson has supported cultural organizations, historical societies and museums that collect, preserve and exhibit objects valuable to art, history and science involving African and African American communities. In 2020, Coleman-Robin son helped AAAM’s members simultaneously navigate the COVID-19 pandemic and heightened social injustice and unrest that followed the murder of George Floyd. Under her leadership, webinars, online workshops and a virtual conference allowed members to collaborate, share experiences and discover best practices for serving as advocates in their communities. In 2021, AAAM implored its members to contact their senators in support of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act to address the use of deadly force and racial profiling.
positioning of the Association of African American Museums since Vedet Coleman-Robinson took the helm. She has positioned AAAM as a resilient, forward-thinking organization and set the benchmark for leadership in the field writ large,” said Eaton-Martínez. “Her ability to cater to baby boomers, millennials and Generation Z ensures that professionals from their 20s to their 80s will benefit from all that AAAM has to offer, thus positively impacting the communities they serve.”
Coleman-Robinson’s relationship with AAAM dates to 2005. She was introduced to the organization by trusted mentors who were passionate about African American history and joined while working toward her master’s degree in U.S. history. She credits her internship at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History & Culture as a pivotal experience that opened the door to AAAM and its dynamic network of museum professionals. In 2018, Coleman-Robinson became a life member. Before accepting the executive leadership role, she assisted in facilitating national stakeholder meetings with African American professional organizations for Lord Cultural Resources and the National Museum of African American History and Culture. She also served on AAAM’s membership committee.
“The Association of African American Museums is a testament to the power of a collective voice. It is an honor to collaborate with institutions across the country and abroad to ensure everyone has access to rich, accurate and inclusive narratives about African and African American history, art and culture,” said Coleman-Robinson. “Expanding membership reflects a growing interest in the Association of African American Museums and reinforces our mission’s importance. As AAAM’s president and CEO, I will continue to advocate for resources and opportunities that help cultural institutions celebrate African and African American heritage and culture while allowing Black people to see themselves in art and learn about their history.”
First Black WomanOwned Firearms Manufacturer Introduces Line Designed for Women of Color
(Black PR Wire) AnaLise “Bean” Matheson is changing the landscape of the firearms industry as the first Black woman to launch a firearms manufacturing company in the United States. Based in Utah and officially launched on Black Friday, the company is altering the conventional landscape of the firearms industry by creating made-to-order firearms for women of color (and the men in their lives), built by another woman of color.
While the company proudly serves all customers, it has a special focus on empowering women of color, the fastest-growing demographic of firearm owners in the country. Each firearm is crafted with care, prioritizing safety, precision, and personalization. “This is about more than firearms—it’s about creating a firearm for women of color to feel empowered and represented in an industry that has previously not had a specific space for us,” says Matheson.
Built with Community in Mind
The following year, AAAM announced a partnership with Howard University School of Business to train the next generation of Black museum leaders. Participants enjoy courses in conscientious leadership, strategic thinking and community relations, fundraising and more. Eighty-five percent of the program’s graduates have been appointed to leadership roles, advancing AAAM’s aim to ensure its members have requisite knowledge and experience to do their work. John Fleming, Ph.D., former AAAM board president, praised the program in an address during AAAM’s annual conference.
“When Vedet told me about the program at Howard, it gave me, really, goosebumps because for the first time we have a place that we can go for leadership training and it is a place where we will be welcomed. I think if you look back over the history of the Association, I think this is going to be the most outstanding accomplishment,” he said during the 2022 convening.
During Coleman-Robinson’s five years as executive director, AAAM has established a cooperative agreement with the National Park Service’s Park History Programs African American Civil Rights Network to bolster the network’s visibility and regrant more than $2 million to network members. Funding from the Mellon Foundation allows for AAAM working groups that help identify and address issues specific to Black museums based on findings from a 2017 needs assessment. A 2021 grant from Lilly Endowment, Inc. supported the expansion of AAAM’s national operations to support institutions across the field.
“The Board is pleased with the remarkable journey and
Coleman-Robinson has devoted her career to elevating voices that have been historically underrepresented in American history. She came to AAAM from the National Park Service (NPS), where she served as a grants management specialist within the State, Tribal, Local, Plans & Grants Division (STLPG). During her 11 years with NPS, Coleman-Robinson was the program lead for the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Grant (HBCU) and the Underrepresented Community Grant programs for STLPG. 2024 LUPUS RESEARCH ALLIANCE GALA Raises Millions to Improve Lives of People with Lupus
NEW YORK, PRNewswire -- The 2024 Lupus Research Alliance (LRA) Breaking Through Gala raised nearly $3 million for lupus research, bringing the hope for a world free of lupus closer with every dollar. Emceed by two-time Emmy Award-Winning host and bestselling author Tamron Hall, the evening included a commanding performance by GRAMMY® nominated genre-blending singer, songwriter, and activist Halsey.
In welcoming the 500 guests, Tamron Hall explained why she continues to support the Lupus Research Alliance. “Almost everyone in this room knows what it means to live with lupus only too well – you cope with it every day, or you see its effects on someone you love – and sometimes that’s even harder to bear,” Hall commented. “I too watch several people I am close to struggle with this disease. Like you, I am here tonight, helping increase disease awareness and raise funds for the most promising research because that is how we can best help the people we care so much about.”
This spring, Halsey bravely revealed her lupus diagnosis, raising broad public awareness among 30+ million Instagram followers and beyond, referring them to the Lupus Research Alliance to learn more. On the heels of releasing a powerful album about struggling with chronic illness, including lupus, Halsey shared her lupus journey with Gala guests before performing.
“Opening up about my own lupus di agnosis a few months ago has brought me a sense of comfort, knowing I’m now part of such a passionate and supportive com munity,” said Halsey. “I hope that through my music, I can help amplify the strength we all share and the brighter future we’re working toward.”
LRA President and CEO Albert T. Roy commented, “This year’s Gala celebrates the Heart of Innovation – inspiring words that eloquently convey why so many support the work of the LRA. Our organization was founded and continues to be fueled by people like this year’s co-honorees The Honorable Rob ert Wood Johnson and Verizon Chairman and CEO Hans Vest berg who believe in the power of science and technology as the best way to help those living with lupus. Our mission is driven by that kind of passion, getting to the very heart of what causes lupus and bringing forth innovative discoveries that are transforming lives.”
Why improved treatments are still so urgently needed was poignantly illustrated by speaker Jenny Zwick along with her hus band and Board member Spencer sharing how lupus has affected their lives.
Special Supporters Recognized for Contributions
Mr. Roy also thanked Lady Gaga and Selena Gomez for their support as Gala Honorary Co-Chairs along with the event Co-Chairs: Ira Akselrad, President of The Johnson Company and Lupus Research Alliance Board Chair; Bob Pittman, Chairman and CEO of iHeartMedia, Inc.; and Spencer J. Zwick; Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Solamere Capital.
Philanthropist and Honorary Gala Co-Chair Michael R. Bloomberg addressed the audience in a special videotaped message of enduring support for the lupus cause as well as a tribute to the organization’s late Board of Directors Co-Chair Richard K. DeScherer who passed away this past year.
Robert Wood Johnson Honored for Founding the LRA to Improve the Future for Daughter Jaime LRA Founding Chairman The Honorable Robert Wood Johnson started the Lupus Research Alliance (then the Alliance for Lupus Research) in 1999 to find answers when his daughter was first diagnosed with lupus as a young child.
Ambassador Johnson explained, “Back then, there was not even one treatment developed for lupus and few scientists were working in the field. Funding more research to improve treatment was clearly critical, not just for my daughter, but for millions more. I am proud that our work laid the foundation for two of the three current lupus-specific treatments, and for many more now in clinical development.”
Honoree Hans Vestberg Recognized for Verizon Support of Lupus Research
As Chairman and CEO of Verizon, Hans Vestberg was also honored for the company’s long-standing commitment to furthering lupus research. In addition to many years supporting the LRA Walk program directly, Verizon is a cornerstone sponsor of the New York Jets, contributing to the Jets Foundation which is committed to the LRA as one of its primary causes.
In addition to thanking the speakers on stage, Mr. Roy also applauded the entire lupus community who donate for LRA-funded research, advocate for federal research funding, raise disease awareness and participate in clinical research – all doing what they can to improve current treatment and ultimately free the world of lupus. He also pointed everyone’s attention to the lighting of the iconic Empire State Building which lit up NYC’s skyline in the colors of lupus research – purple and
Winter blues? Lifesum nutritionist unveils biohacks to boost mental health
LOS ANGELES, PRNewswire -- As the days shorten and temperatures drop, many in the US experience the winter blues, with symptoms like low energy and lack of motivation. Signe Svanfeldt, lead nutritionist at Lifesum, a leading global healthy eating app, offers expert tips for boosting mental health this winter through mindful food choices.
Winter Blues and SAD in the US
Approximately 10-20% of Americans experience mild Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) or “winter blues” (source), about 5% of adults in the US suffer from major depression with seasonal pattern, a more severe form of SAD, and women are more likely to be diagnosed with SAD than men, with a ratio of about 4 to 1 (source).
Nutrition Tips for Better Mental Health
“Food plays an essential role in supporting mental health, and choosing the right nutrients can help you stay balanced and resilient during the winter months. It’s not just about avoiding foods that harm your mood; it’s about nourishing your body and mind with foods that support overall well-being,” says Signe.
Foods to Boost Mental Health:
Omega-3 Fatty Acids – Found in salmon, mackerel, chia seeds, and walnuts, omega-3s support brain health and reduce inflammation, improving mood and lowering anxiety.
Fiber – Whole grains, vegetables, and legumes promote gut health, stabilize blood sugar, and contribute to a more balanced mood.
Prebiotics – Foods like whole grains and vegetables nourish beneficial gut bacteria, reducing stress and anxiety.
Probiotics – Fermented foods such as yogurt and kimchi help balance the gut microbiome, boosting serotonin production and improving mood.
Protein – Essential for producing mood-regulating neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, protein helps stabilize blood sugar and reduce mental fatigue.
What to Avoid for Better Mental Health: Alcohol – While it may seem relaxing, alcohol disrupts sleep and depletes essential nutrients, contributing to anxiety and depression.
Ultra-Processed Foods – Full of trans fats and refined sugars, these foods increase inflammation, which can worsen mood and cognitive function.
Sugary Drinks – Soda and energy drinks cause rapid blood sugar spikes followed by crashes, leading to irritability and mood swings.
By focusing on omega-3s, fiber, prebiotics, probiotics, and protein, and avoiding alcohol, ultra-processed foods, and sugary drinks, you can help your body and mind thrive throughout the winter. A nutrient-rich diet not only boosts mood but also enhances energy and mental clarity, helping you approach the season with a healthier outlook.
(StatePoint) In today’s fast-paced, digital world, there are many gift-giving options for loved ones far and wide, from sending e-gift cards to their favorite shops and restaurants to creating custom video messages.
However, a new survey from Duck brand, a leading maker of mailing and shipping products, finds that the festive fun of sending physical presents isn’t lost.
“We learned that most people— 98%—send at least one package containing gifts and nearly half—46%—typically mail up to three gifts throughout the season,” says Natalie Guillaume, director of product marketing, packaging tapes, at Shurtape Technologies, LLC, the company that markets Duck brand. “To make the process holly and jolly, we recommend planning ahead and purchasing high-quality supplies to ensure presents arrive on time and in one piece.”
Good Tidings Delivered on Time
More than 60% of survey participants say they send their packages two to four weeks in advance of when they need to arrive. Still, 43% express their greatest concern when mailing goods throughout the yuletide season is the parcel arriving on time. Knowing they can’t rely on the magic of Santa’s sleigh to make a timely delivery, Guillaume suggests getting ahead of the holiday hustle by checking delivery deadlines for the busy season. Then, leaving a little leeway to account for delays due to winter weather or other logistical challenges.
Don’t Let Tape Get Your Tinsel in a Tangle
When it comes to shipping, the wrong tape can turn anyone into a Grinch. Nearly half of people (45%) say tape not sticking well to boxes is their biggest challenge. In this case, a heavy-duty tape will do the trick. Look for one with a wide temperature range performance, so you don’t have to worry about damaged deliveries due to a frosty forecast.
Additionally, 40% of people have experienced difficulty tearing packing tape. Duck Brand EZ Start Packing Tape, made with
