n 2007, at the beginning of the housing market crash, neighborhoods that were on the rise soon fell back into despair and declining property values due to the excessive number of foreclosures. People who were invested in the communities they resided in could no longer afford to stay in their homes. While developers took advantage of the opportunity, incomplete rehab projects soon became targets for local thieves or squatters. In other cases, developers who couldn’t sell their properties, often rented out their units to whoever had the cash which sometimes resulted in more criminal activity.

Not many things in life are certain, but odds are you will unfortunately face at least one health event that requires hospitalization and, following that, rehabilitation. While hospitals provide an array of helpful rehab services, most people prefer to get well in the comfort of their own homes. Although beneficial in the recovery process, home care can also have its own distinct obstacles. Couple that with a patient’s fears and struggles of what’s to come in the weeks and months ahead, and it can create a perfect storm for both patients and caregivers. To help, the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses (ARN), a nearly 6,000-member worldwide organization, has created ReSTART Recovery, an online resource that provides information for those who are (or will be) in rehab for everything from strokes to joint replacements to head injuries, and for those who will be caring for them. “My clients have been through acute rehab and are back in their communities,” Susan Wirt, a former president of ARN. “I figure out how they can be well and healthy despite their chronic conditions,” she said. The goal is to get patients who have a disability to a point that they are, once again, as self-sufficient as possible and able to live a full life. Locals Decry Lack of Taxi Service in Chicago in New TV Ad
Chicagoans are speaking out about their love of Uber in a new TV and digital campaign. The new TV ad, which recently went up on Chicago broadcast and cable stations, highlights new data from the City of Chicago that shows Uber and Lyft providing 10 times the number of rides to and from underserved neighborhoods as taxi over the last six months. “I remember the days… Even if a cab stopped for me…he’d say, get out of my cab. I’m not going to the South Side,” said one Chicago resident in the spot. According to Uber, more than 100,000 Chicagoans have signed a petition against Ald. Anthony Beale’s (9th) ordinance to greatly restrict ridesharing. Beale’s ordinance would make it nearly twice as expensive to get a ride, and put up new, unnecessary barriers for ridesharing drivers, Uber said in the release.
NHS East Chatham Revitalization Program Ending Soon Continued from page 1
Neighborhood Housing Services (NHS) has been working and helping to rejuvenate communities throughout the Chicago land area for more than 35 years. Deborah Moore, Director of Neighborhood Strategy and Planning says NHS has been working to rebuild communities like East Chatham for years, but soon the East Chatham area program will end. “NHS is a neighborhood revitalization organization that is committed to helping homeowners and strengthening neighborhood throughout Chicago.” In conjunction with the city’s Micro-Market Recovery Program, NHS is working to reinvest and rejuvenate the East Chatham community (east of Cottage Grove Ave.) When the Micro-Market Recovery program was first launched more than 4 years ago, the city identified target zones that would start to see interventions. These are communities that have higher rates of foreclosures, abandoned buildings and vacant lots. The
city wanted to partner with local groups and get vacant buildings into the hands of responsible nonprofit organizations that would develop them into new homes and apartments for residents. Neighborhood Housing Services is a nonprofit housing organization and one of the first nonprofit lending institutions, they along with the Community Investment Corporation, a leader in the multifamily rehab lending industry, are working to turn the community around. Since its’ start in 1975, NHS has served more than 219,000 families throughout Chicago. The organization has issued loans through its corporate lending arm, Neighborhood Lending Services. More than $597 million dollars has been loaned to borrowers to buy, fix, or keep their homes. NHS has saved more than 800 homes from foreclosure and offer foreclosure counseling and home buyer education classes. For buyers who are interested in purchasing
a property, but who may not know where to start, NHS can help every step of the way with the goal of increasing home ownership. NHS wants residents to return and live, rent and purchase homes in communities it serves. Although there is grant money to support programs in targeted areas, the deadline is quickly approaching for the East Chatham area program which ends this year. Buyers must be prepared to close on their homes by the deadline date in order to qualify for any of the incentives. One condition of the program is that any multifamily property that’s purchased must be owner-occupied. “When owners live in the community with other residents, they’re invested in the success of that community,” said Moore. For More information on the East Chatham revitalization initiative, call NHS at 773-329-4010 or visit www. NHSchicago.org .

Gifted Boy Helps Boost Accessibility of African-American Children’s Literature
M
ost African-American parents understand how challenging it can be to find books for black children and statistics from Cooperative Children’s Book Center (CCBC) attests to this. CCBC receives most of the trade books published annually in the United States. In 1985, only 18 of the 2,500 trade books that were published were written by African Americans. Although this number has improved over the decades, statistics still indicate that there is still a diversity gap when it comes to children’s book. CCBC’s 2015 statistics revealed that of all the children’s books received by the Center, only 7.59% featured people of color. Little Buzz Book Club is on a mission to promote books about people of color including African and Caribbean culture. The Little Buzz character was inspired by the Founder’s six-year-old son, Qadar. At the age of two, Qadar taught himself how to read. He has a rare condition known as hyperlexia - a natural ability to decode and understand words without the ability to speak in conversation. Qadar had a hard time communicating with others but eventually began to mimic conversations he read in the books. As a result, he has developed a love for reading and enjoys putting himself inside of books. When asked about the motivation to start the subscription box, Sharif-Harris said: “I was disappointed that I had such a difficult time finding books for my son. Then I realized there were millions of other moms who wanted to inspire their children with stories about characters that looked like them as well.” Little Buzz Book Club is the first subscription box that focuses on literature featuring children of color. For this reason it has been generating a buzz among the African-American and Caribbean communities. The club has more than

ComEd: 52,000 Customer Interruptions Caused by Foil Balloons Warm weather brings outdoor parties for graduations, birthdays and weddings. However, ComEd is warning that events like these can lead to power outages when foil balloons, also known as Mylar balloons, from those festivities come into contact with power lines. When a foil balloon contacts a power line or a part of substation equipment, its metallic properties can cause a surge of electricity that can, in turn, cause the equipment to short-circuit. And the spark could lead
to a power outage or fire. Foil balloons were the cause of more than 7,000 customer interruptions in April and more than 52,000 customer interruptions in 2015. To help reduce foil balloon-related power outages ComEd is advising customers to: Keep balloons tethered at all times and attached to weights. Properly dispose of foil balloons by puncturing the balloon to release helium that otherwise could cause
the balloon to float away. NEVER touch a power line. Do not attempt to retrieve a balloon or toy that is entangled in an overhead power line. For assistance, call ComEd at 1-800-EDISON-1 (800-334-7661). Always assume power lines are live and keep yourself, your belongings and anything you are carrying at least 10 feet away from power lines. ComEd customers can learn about more safety tips for the season by visiting ComEd.com.

Tips for Planning Your Wedding Photos Like a Pro
With everything that goes into your wedding day, those once-in-a-lifetime moments will go by in a blur, which is why hiring a professional wedding photographer is a must. After all, the last thing you should be worrying about is whether your photographer will be able to capture your big day. The key? Prepare yourself so that you can accurately evaluate the “right” photographer for you. “The best photographer will take the time to build a rapport with you and use his or her experience and creativity to capture the mood, personality, ambiance and even the geography of your wedding,” says PPA (Professional Photographers of America) photographer Berit Bizjak. “The finest wedding photography is more than a series of still pictures. It’s physical poetry -- it tells the story of the day and portrays the essence of both people and place.” To this end, PPA, the largest international nonprofit association created by professional photographers, has taken the guesswork out of the process by offering six tips to help you plan your wedding photos like a pro:
1 2
Book far in advance. The best photographers get booked quickly -sometimes as much as a year in advance -- so don’t wait until the last minute to book your photographer.
Show them the money. Now is not the time to skimp on your photo budget. Call around and get a price range for services, and remember: after the cake is long gone, and the dress is stored away, your wedding photos will be the only things left to share and enjoy for years to come, so don’t cut too many corners on your photography budget -- you’ll end up regretting it.
3
Make sure your photographer is a real pro. Only hire someone who has liability insurance, experience taking the style of photos you want, backup equipment and a plan for when things go south. Ideally, he or she is a PPA photographer. PPA photographers do more than just snap pictures. They have the technical expertise and artistry to make you look your best and bring your vision to life. They also abide by a strict code of ethics that makes a real difference.
4
Request to see a full gallery of real weddings. Look at full wedding coverage (not just a small selection of each wedding’s best moments) to see a photographer’s true style and get a sense of how he or she might tell your “story.” Do you prefer more artistic or traditional poses? Would you rather have a photojournalist approach or a mix of all styles?
5
Work with your photographer to create a detailed shot list. PPA wedding photographers can also help you create that shot list, as they know what key moments tell a wedding story and can prepare for those. But talk about your must-haves, and walk through the entire program with your photographer ahead of time. Share your expectations ahead of time to ensure that he or she captures the key shots, while remaining attentive and available to catch the best candid moments.
6
Plan your post-wedding photo strategy• ahead of time! Almost as soon as the festivities are over, you’ll be eager to look at the photos so you can relive your big day over and over again. Ask your photographer for teasers or a “sneak peek” and a timeline for when the rest of the pictures will be available. Will they give you an online gallery for family and friends to choose the images they want? Again, knowing these things ahead of time will make things easy on the back end, sparing you any heartache. James McHugh Construction Co. has been quietly building the Chicago skyline for more than 100 years.Naturally, then, when Navy Pier began searching for a general contractor to oversee its centennial reimagination and redevelopment, it chose McHugh, whose resume includes Chicago icons such as Marina City, the Blackstone Hotel and Aqua Tower. Tasked with bringing to life various aspects of Navy Pier’s Centennial Vision, including the Centennial Wheel, Polk Bros Fountain and Plaza, construction of new boat ramps, redevelopment of the park space, and reconfiguration of the entry roadways, McHugh began planning long before the September 28, 2015 demolition. Logistical planning by McHugh and its subcontractors began during the fall of 2014, earlier than usual due to the challenges inherent in building the Centennial Wheel – a structure twice as heavy as its predecessor – on the 100-yearold Pier, which sits on a 20-year-old parking garage atop Lake Michigan. Typically, a 500-ton crane would be brought in to erect the wheel’s spokes, legs, and gondolas, but in this case, McHugh had to consider the load capacity of the Pier and the supported slab in the parking garage below. This required a specific construction sequence utilizing two 250ton cranes and one 100-ton crane working in unison to ensure the integrity of the build and the protection of the structures
Tickets for Navy Pier’s new Centennial Wheel are now on sale. The new Centennial Wheel opened to the public on Friday, May 27 and served as the kick-off to the Pier’s 100th year celebration and marked the completion of the first phase of the Pier’s redevelopment. Photo Courtesy of navypier.com.
below. “It was a perfectly orchestrated ballet,” explained Conroy. “We had structural engineers analyze how each piece of material would be installed, in what order and by what size crane. We even had to strategically position the material and the cranes on the Pier in a manner not to overload the roof structure at any given time. This was all worked out before we even broke ground.”
Once construction was underway, the team faced unique but somewhat expected challenges such as high winds, extreme cold and an uncharacteristically wet spring. During the only two days Navy Pier was closed for construction, temperatures hovered around 9 degrees meaning crews had to do some of their largest wheel installations in single digit temperatures. Conroy also explained how winds of 5 MPH in downtown could equate to more
than 30 MPH on the Pier, so the ability to react quickly and adjust priorities was paramount. According to Conroy, the most exciting part of the Navy Pier project was the creativity the team was able to exercise. “When you’re maintaining a fully functional visitor destination, you have to get creative,” added Conroy. “For example, there was a day we needed to pour concrete and install landscaping soil. We brought in a concrete pump that would deliver the concrete over the roadway so the landscaping delivery trucks could still access the Pier. We find ways to make it work.” For McHugh, making it work means making it work safely. Conroy explains that safety is a part of the company’s culture. “We took measures every single day to ensure guest and worker safety was not compromised by the construction,” said Conroy. “We had a full-time safety manager continually monitoring the work site, and we scheduled all construction in guest traffic areas outside of normal business hours. Minimizing disruptions and ensuring a safe work environment was the top priority.” “Our team of engineers, operators and subcontractors is proud of the work they’ve put into the Wheel. For them, this opportunity brought the project full circle,” said Conroy. Centennial Wheel opened to the public on Friday, May 27.

Pastor Profile
Bishop Derrick M. Fitzpatrick By Monique Smith
B
ishop Derrick M. Fitzpatrick, pastor of Stone Temple Missionary Baptist Church is what you would call a bivocational pastor. He has a Master’s and Doctorate degree in Theology and Biblical studies, but also has an undergraduate degree in Engineering Physics. Bishop Fitzpatrick has worked as an Engineering Manager and now the Manager of Sales and Marketing for United Chemi-Con, Inc., a company he’s been with for more than 29 years. He is married to Reshorna Fitzpatrick who pastors Proceeding Word Church. The historic Stone Temple Church which sits in the heart of North Lawndale started out in the 1920’s as a Jewish synagogue, but as the African American population in the community grew, it became a church in 1954. The church once provided a pulpit for the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to preach and a forum for King’s vision for equitable housing in Chicago during the civil rights movement. The City of Chicago has recently made the recommendation to the Landmark’s Commission to honor Stone Temple with Landmark designation. The church was

Trinity Evangelical Divinity School Celebrates with 2016 Spring and Summer Graduates Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (TEDS) recently announced its spring graduates. is absolute in his belief that he was called to preach. “I truly know and believe that is has been my assignment to be a pastor and to be in the church I am in and to serve the people I serve. I do question where the resources are at times, but it is the joy of my life. There is no question in my mind,” he says. The city of Chicago is plagued by gun violence, people are filled with depression and despair, but Bishop Fitzpatrick stands firm on his belief and message that all is not lost. He says, “It’s a challenge to convince people that they actually have a future and with God all things are possible, they don’t believe. They don’t have faith it will get better especially when they don’t see or have the resources to make it better.” Bishop Fitzpatrick works to convey a message of hope, faith and purpose. “The Bible tells us that God has a purpose and destiny for your life, you need to know what that is. When you discover your purpose, you move into better prosperity for your life. Your gift will make room for you.” For decades the church has played a significant role in the black community. “Historically we have been on the forefront on the advancement of civil rights; we should be a strong voice. But we have to be careful not to stray away from our main focus which is to bring people to Christ. We are to be a helping hand and a support,” says Bishop Fitzpatrick.
THEME: GRATITUDE Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to [his] purpose.
