Areva Martin is a Harvardeducated lawyer who has appeared on CNN and Good Morning America. Growing up, Martin saw inequities and injustices and wanted to become a lawyer to address them. Recently, Martin secured a $5.9 million settlement with the City of Palm Springs for families who were forcibly removed from their homes on a section of land in the 1950s and 1960s.

RIBBON-CUTTING CEREMONY MARKED $4.2 MILLION 154TH STREET RECONSTRUCTION COMPLETION
HARVEY, IL. — After months of closure to motorists and pedestrians, 154th Street officially reopened, marking the completion of a $4.2 million reconstruction project that transformed the roadway from Wood Street to Broadway. A ribbon-cutting ceremony took place in late December at 154th and Broadway to celebrate this significant milestone.
The extensive project included the installation of new curbs, freshly laid gutters, and a fully reconstructed roadway, eliminating potholes and enhancing infrastructure. During construction, workers uncovered historic trolley tracks and original brick pavers, connecting the project to the area’s history.
The improvements were made possible through funding from Cook County, the Regional Transportation Authority, The Nature Conservancy, the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO), and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Additional support came from the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) Rebuild Illinois Funds, Invest in Cook Programs, and other infrastructure-focused initiatives.
Key goals of the project included:
Upgraded roadway conditions for safer travel.
Enhanced drainage and reduced street flooding.
Installed green infrastructure to improve water quality and manage runoff.
Incorporated enhanced safety measures for all users.

Martin said the Palm Springs case is even more significant given the incoming administration.
“Palm Springs, given that it was a local action taken at the municipality level can be a model for cities around the country to pattern themselves after and to continue to do this work, even in light of what is going to be, a hostile, presidency, Senate and Congress,” Martin said.
As Martin became lead counsel for the families in Palm Spring that were displaced, she brought elected officials from Palm Springs to a reparations conference in Evanston, Ill. So they could meet other elected officials who were doing work around reparations. She spoke at the 4th Annual First Repair Reparations Symposium in Evanston, Ill., in December. She was able to give an update on the Palm Springs case, as well as share the process and strategies with conference attendees. She commended Robin Rue Simmons and First Repair for their work around reparations.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Martin began an online talk show, The Special Report with Areva Martin, because she wanted to provide accurate information about Covid. She shared the inside information she received from local elected officials, as well as experts in the medical and scientific communities. She said her show became a source of trusted information in a time when there was conflicting information spreading just as rapidly as the virus itself.
The show also tackled social justice issues, including Black Maternal Health and the 2020 election. Her shows about Black Maternal Health received Telly and Anthem awards. During the 2024 Presidential Election, Martin took the show on the road to seven battleground states hosting live events to connect with predominantly Black voters to provide trusted information.
While she said that she is not hopeful that reparations on a National level will happen during this upcoming administration, the work does not stop.
“It’s in this moment that we continue to strategize, continue to be creative, continue to be focused on local initiatives, while we prepare,” she said. “Those of us, justice warriors, reparations movement warriors, we call ourselves, won’t stop doing the work, won’t stop agitating at the National level and continuing to press those representatives, those Democratic progressive representatives, to continue to be creative and to find ways, even in a hostile administration, to advance this work,” Martin said.
Martin is the founder of the Special Needs Network, which began in 2005. Martin’s son Marty was diagnosed with autism at two years old and she was looking for factual information around autism and how it impacted Black families. She decided to dig deeper to understand how it was going to impact her son and their family. She wrote the book, The Everyday Advocate, about her personal and professional experiences around autism. She started a practice area in her law firm, representing families who had children who were on the spectrum who had been discriminated against. It is now a statewide organization providing services, from direct intervention services to legislative advocacy, to families throughout the state of California who have children with autism and other developmental disabilities.

Giannoulias Announces New Laws
Initiatives call for safe driving, auto theft prevention and honoring service member sacrifice
Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias announced several new laws initiated by his office that went into effect at the start of the new year. The initiatives were passed earlier this year by the Illinois General Assembly and signed into law. They include:
Preventing Catalytic Converter Theft
New legislation makes it more difficult for thieves to sell stolen catalytic converters by requiring recyclable metal dealers keep a record of the vehicle identification number (VIN) and the catalytic converter itself.
In addition, the seller of a catalytic converter must provide a copy of the certificate of title or registration indicating ownership of the vehicle from which the catalytic converter was removed, making it easier for law enforcement to investigate potential crimes.
“For far too long it has been far too easy for thieves to steal and resell catalytic converters from the vehicles of law-abiding Illinoisans,” Giannoulias said. “This legislation will deter theft and expedite law enforcement investigations by requiring scrap metal dealers to keep detailed records of the parts they purchase. “
Catalytic converter theft is a crime that frequently results in hundreds to thousands of dollars in unexpected vehicle repairs. In recent years, the skyrocketing value of the precious metals found in catalytic converters has resulted in a larger incentive for theft. Catalytic converter theft spiked 288% from 2020 to 2022, latest figures show.
House Bill 4589 was sponsored by State Representative Jay Hoffman (113th District – Belleville) and State Senator Michael Hastings (19th District – Frankfort).
Assisting Victims of Crime
Victims of vehicle theft can now apply for free replacement license plates and registration stickers if they provide
a police report or affidavit showing the original plates were stolen.
“Extraordinary obstacles are presented to victims whenever a vehicle theft occurs. Through no fault of their own, they are faced with the daunting task of repairing what has been damaged and attempting to recover what has been lost,” Giannoulias said. “Waiving these replacement fees is a small but important step in helping victims return to a sense of normalcy after suffering such a significant loss.”
In 2022, the most recent vehicle theft data, there were 38,649 thefts statewide, an increase of more than 10,000 cases compared to the year prior. More than 22,000 of the thefts occurred in Chicago that year, where thefts doubled compared to 2021.
Senate Bill 3471 was sponsored by State Senator Elgie R. Sims Jr. (17th District –Chicago) and State Representative Jehan Gordon-Booth (92nd District – Peoria).
Enhancing Scott’s Law
Scott’s Law, also called the “Move Over” law, requires motorists approaching a stopped emergency vehicle to proceed with caution and yield the right of way by moving out of the lane adjacent to the emergency vehicle. If that’s not possible – such as if the road only is two lanes – drivers are expected to reduce speed as they pass the scene.
This new legislation will ensure that individuals operating a vehicle yield the right-of-way by making a lane change AND reducing their speed when approaching the scene of an accident, emergency or construction zone. This will result in safer road conditions for emergency responders, construction workers and all motorists.
“Passed in 2001, Scott’s Law has proven an effective measure to improve road safety, but we can always do more to protect those that protect us,” Giannoulias said. “Requiring both a lane change and a reduction in speed when approach-

Gov. Pritzker Announces $200M in Capital Improvement Grants to Transform Healthcare Delivery and Improve Health Outcomes
CHICAGO -- Governor JB Pritzker, the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (HFS), and the Illinois Capital Development Board (CDB) announced the selection of 13 organizations to receive funding through the unprecedented Healthcare Transformation Capital Investment Grant Program. The grants, which total $200 million, will fund capital projects addressing health-related social needs and reduce disparities in healthcare in historically underserved communities.
“As my administration continues on our mission to expand healthcare access throughout Illinois, we’re focused on investing in historically underserved areas,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “This Capital Improvement Grant Program will improve hospitals and care centers with much needed improvements, making it easier for healthcare professionals to serve their communities.”
Healthcare Transformation Capital Improvement grants will build on HFS’ equity-driven Healthcare Transformation Collaboratives (HTC) program, which was established in 2021. The goals of the HTC program are to expand access to care and improve health equity, especially in underserved communities, by leveraging shared resources among collaborative partners to create locally-driven solutions.
These awards also support the State’s safety net hospitals, which are critical to providing essential medical care to our most underserved communities.
Safety nets are hospitals and medical centers that provide healthcare to patients regardless of insurance status or their ability to pay. Of the awardees, 6 of the 13 are safety net health entities, representing 48% of the total funding.

Cognitive impairment and caregiving responsibilities can significantly impact workplace efficiency, leading to decreased productivity, delays, and errors. Employees managing caregiving duties or experiencing cognitive symptoms often require more sick days or personal time off, resulting in increased absenteeism. • 6 in 10 caregivers were employed in the past year, working an average of 35 hours per week while caregiving.
• 57% of employed caregivers had to adjust their work schedules, such as arriving late or leaving early.
• 18% of caregivers reduced their working hours, and 9% left the workforce entirely.
Given these realities, flexible work options and caregiver support programs are essential to help employees balance their professional and caregiving responsibilities.
Future Directions for Corporate America
Employers can play a pivotal role in promoting dementia-friendly workplaces and communities. Hosting workplace events that build camaraderie and combat social isolation, offering work-from-home options, and fostering trusted relationships with employees are all strategies to support a diverse and inclusive workforce.
On a broader scale, legislative changes are needed to protect employees who are terminated for performance reasons but later found to have dementia. Simplifying processes for executing and utilizing power of attorney documents can also reduce the burden on families.
Dementia and mild cognitive impairment are no longer issues confined to the home; they are increasingly visible in the workplace. By fostering awareness, compassion, and practical solutions, employers can create an environment where employees feel safe acknowledging health challenges. In doing so, companies not only support their workforce but also ensure long-term organizational success, resilience, and inclusivity.

The Auditorium, Chicago’s landmark stage at 50 E. Ida B. Wells Drive, and the Chicago Philharmonic present the latest installment in its Auditorium Philms Concert Series, a multi-media experience presenting iconic films brought to life with scores performed in concert, with the landmark superhero movie Marvel Studio’s Black Panther. The blockbuster film will play while a full orchestra performs the thrilling score composed by Ludwig Göransson -one of the most lauded and prolific composers working in film today- with in-sync dialogue and sound effects from the original film. Senegalese tama or talking drum player Massamba Diop will join the orchestra for the performance. Diop assisted Göransson with composing the score for the film and is featured heavily in the original recording. Starring the late Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa, the 2018 Marvel Studios’ Black Panther quickly became a global sensation and cultural phenomenon, showing a new dimension of what superhero films could be. Steeped in the aesthetics of afro-futurism, Black Panther follows T’Challa, the prince of a technologically advanced but self-isolating African nation called Wakanda. In addition to the high-octane action scenes familiar to superhero movies, Black Panther was revolutionary in its social commentary typically absent from other action movies.
Composer Ludwig Göransson (who is known for his work as producer to Childish Gambino in addition to composing for tv and film including Oppenheimer, Tenet, and The Mandalorian) crafted the score to Black Panther in collaboration with Senegalese musicians Baba Maal and Massamba Diop. The Academy Award and Grammy Award winning movie score combines traditional Senegalese music, Western symphonic scoring, and 21st Century digital production techniques to parallel the film’s Afro-futurist themes and create a sound that feels both futuristic and ancient. In a particularly inspired collaboration between Göransson and Diop, the film hero T’Challa is represented by three notes on the talking drum that sound rhythmically similar to the name “T’Challa.” This theme is repeated throughout the film, first by the talking drum and then the entire orchestra and is transformed depending on the scene.

MAYOR BRANDON JOHNSON SIGNS EXECUTIVE ORDER TO ESTABLISH TRANSFEMICIDE WORKING GROUP
CHICAGO – Mayor Brandon Johnson signed Executive Order 2024-2, establishing a Transfemicide Working Group to develop comprehensive strategies addressing violence against transgender women in our city. This Working Group represents a vital step in the Johnson administration’s commitment to implementing community safety approaches that address root causes of violence and ensure Chicago is safe for all residents.
“As transgender women continue to experience violence in our city at disproportionate rates, my administration is committed to uplifting our trans community and ensuring their safety,” said Mayor Brandon Johnson. “With establishment of the Transfemicide Working Group, the City of Chicago commits to protect our trans community through direct partnership with the communities most impacted. The solutions we develop will come from collaboration with community advocates and leaders who deeply understand the need to grow a city where every resident can live authentically and safely.”
In our work to ensure collaborative governance, this Working Group is critical to establishing evidence-based solutions that address the crisis facing our trans neighbors. Chicago has become the deadliest city in the nation for Black trans women, a somber reality that demands immediate action. This Working Group will strengthen support for organizations that have long championed this work while developing comprehensive solutions to end this pattern of violence.
Executive Order 2024-2 tasks the Commissioner of the Chicago Commission on Human Relations in collaboration with the Chicago Police Department with convening a Working Group by February 28, 2025. This Working Group shall include interdepartmental representatives across the City to review and recommend city policies, procedures, training and directives to change outcomes within the BIPOC transgender and gender-diverse community.

WALKGOOD LA CONCLUDES INSPIRING 2ND ANNUAL FILMGOOD & WELLNESS FESTIVAL
LOS ANGELES, Calif. — WalkGood LA successfully concluded its 2nd Annual Film and Wellness Festival, an inspiring five-day event that brought together industry leaders, creators, and community members for a celebration of film and wellness. Drawing over 375 filmmakers, storytellers, and attendees, the festival featured more than 25 dynamic panelists, including Sheryl Lee Ralph, Jharrel Jerome, and Lena Waithe. It has quickly established itself as a cornerstone of Los Angeles’ cultural calendar.
“Our goal was to redefine what it means to connect through art and wellness,” said Etienne Maurice, Founder of WalkGood LA. “We are creating spaces where stories are not only told but experienced, where every frame can inspire change and every moment can spark healing.”
This year’s festival showcased a diverse range of programming, including screenings of Amazon MGM’s Unstoppable and OWN’s Mistletoe & Matrimony. Six impactful short films by underrepresented filmmakers were selected from over 125 submissions, with special recognition given to two standout creators. Jamaican filmmaker JP Williams won the audience prize for his short film BLV, while South Asian director Radha Mehta took home the grand jury prize for her powerful short film Dosh. Post-screening Q&A sessions deepened the dialogue, and industry mixers facilitated connections with major studios like Sony Pictures Entertainment, Warner Bros. Television, and Amazon MGM Studios.

From Canvas to Screen: “Legends of the Highway” Wraps Filming, Spotlights Florida’s Pioneering Highwaymen Art Collective

USPTO reaches historic milestone of 100 Patent and Trademark Resource Centers in libraries across the country, U.S. territories
WASHINGTON D.C. – The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) recently announced the addition of Tuskegee University and the University of the Virgin Islands to the Patent and Trademark Resource Centers (PTRC) network, officially marking the historic milestone of 100 PTRCs in libraries across the country and U.S. territories. The addition of Tuskegee University and the University of the Virgin Islands are the sixth and seventh Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to be designated as PTRCs.
PTRCs play an instrumental role in advancing the innovation ecosystem by offering free assistance to current and aspiring inventors, innovators, and entrepreneurs in communities across America. PTRCs connect these creators with specialized librarians in person on issues related to patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets. Each year, PTRCs assist thousands of aspiring inventors, creators, and small business owners on their innovation journeys, providing online resources, research consultations, and workshops to share information on the importance of intellectual property (IP) while also tailoring their services to meet the needs of the community. Last year alone, PTRCs helped nearly 6,000 individuals through their programs.
Partnering with PTRC-designated libraries is one of the many ways the USPTO equitably facilitates intellectual property (IP) protection for all innovators and entrepreneurs, contributing to the success of their ventures and their communities. According to a 2020 research study, a startup’s first patent leads to a cumulative 16 additional employees and $10.6 million in additional sales over five years.
As part of its National Strategy for Inclusive Innovation and a 2023 letter-writing campaign to more than 600 libraries spearheaded by USPTO Director Kathi Vidal, libraries across the country were invited to consider becoming PTRCs to assist their local innovators, creators, and inventors in communities where invention and entrepreneurship can help drive local economies. Since Director Vidal’s letter-writing campaign launched, more than 15 libraries signed up to be designated as a PTRC, including six HBCUs. HBCUs have played a critical role in advancing intergenerational economic mobility for Black families and communities throughout generations. Additionally, HBCUs have been instrumental in fostering innovation and intellectual property development.

of PTRCs at HBCUs – is proof of the desire for more communities to experience the tremendous economic and societal impacts innovation and entrepreneurship can have, and the incredible benefit of PTRCs’ free assistance to current and aspiring creators,” said Kathi Vidal, Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property

Take the Life-Saving Step of Testing for Radon
(StatePoint) Radon—an odorless, tasteless and colorless gas found in homes and buildings at high levels throughout the United States—is the second leading cause of lung cancer, responsible for about 21,000 deaths each year, and the leading cause of lung cancer among people who don’t smoke.
The American Lung Association is partnering with Protect Environmental to educate and empower communities nationwide to take action to prevent lung cancer this January, which is National Radon Action Month, and throughout the year. As part of the campaign, they are answering some frequently asked questions about radon:
What is radon? Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas emitted from the ground. Uranium in soil and rocks breaks down to form radium. As radium decays, radioactive particles (radon gas) are released into the air.
Why is radon found in buildings? Radon gas enters buildings through cracks in walls, basements, floors, foundations, and potentially, through water used in showers and faucets, trapping it inside.
Why is radon harmful? Radon gas particles can be inhaled in your lungs, attacking cells with dangerous, cancer-causing radiation. Radon exposure has no immediate symptoms; however, the long-term threat of health problems, including lung cancer, is serious.
How is radon detected? The only way to know the radon level in your home and workplace is to conduct a radon test. Dangerous radon levels have been found in every state, so every building should be regularly tested. Testing is the first step in reducing risk of radon-induced lung cancer and is recommended every two to five years, even if you have a mitigation system. The Lung Association and Protect Environmental are offering free radon test kits to homeowners in select communities across the United States. What should I do if I detect high radon levels? Radon gas is measured in picocuries per liter (pCi/L) of air. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends taking action to reduce radon if levels are 4.0 pCi/L or greater, and to consider similar actions when the radon level is between 2.0 and 4.0 pCi/L. If you discover high radon levels in your home, a radon mitigation system should be installed to reduce the amount of radon to a safer level. Just be sure you work with a professional who is certified in radon mitigation. Using unqualified professionals may lead to faulty installation, which can cause property damage and even increase indoor radon levels.
The American Lung Association’s campaign to raise awareness on the importance of radon testing is supported by Protect Environmental. Why do lenders use digital mortgage tools? Lenders have traditionally relied on printed documentation that requires them to manually review your application before deciding if you qualify for a loan, including for how much and on what terms. This can be a time-consuming process for both the homebuyer and the lender. Digital mortgage underwriting tools allow lenders to expedite the process by using electronic documents and automation to more efficiently evaluate your loan application. Freddie Mac research has found that these tools can decrease the loan origination timeline and may also save you money in closing costs.
In addition, the digital tools mortgage lenders use may help you qualify for a loan if you have a limited credit profile by looking at factors such as your history of on-time rent payments or the amount of money coming into and out of your bank account each month. This helps demonstrate your ability to pay your mortgage each month.
What information will my lender ask for? Not only will the way you provide documentation change, but in some instances the information your lender evaluates will change as well. For instance, you may be asked to provide access to digital accounts, such as your bank account, instead of providing printed bank statements. By using digital tools, lenders can get a more detailed view of your finances, which helps them lend to you if you are a harder-to-underwrite buyer. Specific requirements may vary by lender — some may prefer a fullydigital process while others may use a combination of printed and electronic documents. Talk to your lender to get a better understanding of their loan application process.
What if I’m not comfortable providing my information? Though your lender will have a more detailed look at your finances through a fully-digital process, keep in mind that digital documents often provide a higher level of security than printed documents. If you still prefer not to share digital access to your personal information, your lender should understand your concerns and be willing to work with you on an alternative solution. If not, you can find a different lender who is willing to accommodate a loan application process that is not digital. In either scenario, you should always take steps to ensure your personal information is protected and remain vigilant against potential fraud. You can help mitigate your risk of fraud and identity theft by researching lenders and working only with reputable companies that take steps to protect their customers’ information.
