REP. HIRSCHAUER TO FIGHT FOR SMART APPROACH TO PUBLIC SAFETY AS CHAIR OF NEW GUN VIOLENCE PREVENTION COMMITTEE

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Maura Hirschuaer, D-Batavia, will continue her fight for smart policies that keep every community safe as chair of the new House Gun Violence Prevention Committee.

Hirschauer has spent her time in Springfield fighting for positive change and demanding common sense gun safety laws. A founding member of the Kane and Kendall County chapter of Moms Demand Action, Hirschauer took her fight to Springfield where she has been instrumental in the passage of Illinois’ assault weapons ban, regulations stopping the flow of untraceable ‘ghost guns,’ and most recently the passage of Karina’s Bill, which strengthens protection orders to get guns out of the hands of domestic abusers.

Hirschauer will continue this work, and collaborate with colleagues and activists from across the state, as chair of the new Gun Violence Prevention Committee, which will be the House’s primary committee dealing with the issue of gun violence.

Growing Home Looks Toward the Future With New Projects

Continued from page 1

During years of disinvestment in the community, it became abandoned. The lots were tested for contamination, remediated, capped and had two feet of compost placed on top.

Growing Home was founded by Les Brown in 1993. It first began its social enterprise farming in Englewood in 2002. Growing Home’s Street Urban Farm, which is located at 5814 S. Wood, has been fully operational since 2009.

The farmland serves as an activation point. Each year, 35,000 pounds of fresh produce is grown there. Ezra Lee, Director of Urban Farms at Growing Home, said the most important part of that process is that new green space was added.

“A big thing is that we’re providing new green space in Englewood. We’re making sure that land is being used,” Lee said.

Growing Home also has its training program, which uses the farm as a tool to give people general employment skills, with the hope those skills can transition to all types of employment and careers. The paid training program lasts 12 weeks, with Lee and his team working with participants on the farm in the morning for four hours and in the afternoon, participants receive job training curriculum with the job training team.

deliver healthy produce to the community and have a place of engagement and enrichment.

Last Spring, the City of Chicago provided Growing Home with a $5 million grant. That funding contributed to Growing Home’s capital campaign. Throughout the last few years, the organization has developed plans for a two-wing building that will house a farm store, café, commercial kitchen, administration offices, a larger classroom an expanded processing center and indoor growing space. The hope is the expansion project will break ground this year.

Earlier this month, there was an announcement about the Rose Garden project. Growing Home was connected with Derrick Rose, who contributed towards a front garden. The garden will be a rose garden and a pollinator garden. Lee said the Rose Garden project fits in with the mission.

“Urban farming, I think, has a responsibility in a number of different ways, one to produce a lot of food, but two, to create green spaces, green islands in the city. With that, we try to find spaces on the farm to have pollinator habitats,” he said. Those pollinator habitats helps pollinate the food that is grown. Also, the Rose Garden will be located in front of the farm, and the hope is that Growing Home is a welcoming and inviting space for the community.

Lee said that urban farming is unique because it gives Growing Home the opportunity to introduce people to things that might be new for them, as well as to get people to be engaged with a food source for them,

While the main growing season takes place between May and November, in February, starts the first on-site cohort, with 25 new production assistants being introduced to urban farming.

Giannoulias to FDA: Action on Red Dye No. 3 and BVO Too Little, Too Late

Following the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) order banning the use of Red Dye No. 3 in food products, Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias renewed his call for an overhaul of the rules governing food additives to eliminate toxic chemicals from the food supply, including candy, snacks and soda.

Last year, Giannoulias pushed for the Illinois Food Safety Act to ensure a healthier food marketplace for Illinois families. The bill called for prohibiting the use of brominated vegetable oil, potassium bromate, propylparaben, Red Dye No. 3 and titanium dioxide – all of which have been linked to serious health problems, including hyperactivity, nervous system damage, reproductive issues, hormonal damage and increased risk of cancer.

Prior to its action on Red Dye No. 3, the FDA banned the use of Brominated Vegetable Oil (BVO) last July, citing links to thyroid issues. The FDA had authorized the use of Red Dye No. 3 and BVO since the 1960s, equating to decades of consumer exposure to the dangerous additives and their associated health risks. The banning of Red

Dye No. 3 in food came 35 years after it was barred from cosmetics because of cancer risks.

“Allowing the company that produces the food to decide if a chemical is safe – without having to inform the FDA – makes no sense and results in a dangerous game for American families to play,” Giannoulias said. “While the recent bans on Red Dye No. 3 and brominated vegetable oil are a step in the right direction, these actions are long overdue and a drop in the bucket considering all the additives linked to negative health outcomes that remain on shelves today. In the absence of decisive action on the part of federal authorities, Illinois must step in to keep dangerous additives out of the marketplace.”

For decades, the “generally recognized as safe” (GRAS) designation has allowed food manufacturers –not the FDA – to decide if chemical additives are safe for consumption. This legal loophole has allowed food dyes, preservatives and other chemicals to be placed on store shelves with little to no oversight from the FDA, the

Adult Daycare: A Vital Resource for Individuals with Alzheimer’s and Other Dementias

“Honoring the Brotherhood” began in August 2005 with honorees Tavis Smiley, Media Personality and Dr. Addie Wyatt, Labor Powerhouse. The event will take place Aug. 25, within the boundaries of the Pullman National Historical Park District where the museum is located. For the first time ever, the Pullman Museum is inviting its partners, The National Park Service (NPS) and the Historic Pullman Foundation (HPF) to join in a collaboration and celebration of these two significant milestones in African American labor history.

The awards Gala has three categories -- the A. Philip Randolph Gentle Warrior Award, the Change Agent Award, and inaugural category Descendants of Distinction.

The 2025 Honorees include April Verrett, who was elected the first Black President of SEIU, the 2nd-largest union in America, U.S. Congressman, Hakeem Jeffries (DNY), Public Relations and Communications Maven Michelle Flowers of Flowers Communications, and posthumously, William Bill Lucy, founding member of CBTU and former President Emeritus of AFSCME.

For individuals living with Alzheimer’s or other dementias, adult daycare programs offer a lifeline to safety, engagement, and quality care. These centers provide structured, supervised environments designed to meet the unique needs of people with memory loss while offering much-needed respite for caregivers.

As the number of dementia diagnoses continues to grow, adult daycare centers are becoming an increasingly valuable option for families seeking care solutions that balance professional support with affordability and flexibility.

What Is Adult Daycare?

Adult daycare programs are community-based facilities that provide daytime care and support for individuals with physical or cognitive challenges, including Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. These centers typically operate during standard business hours and offer a range of services, including:

• Supervised care in a safe, secure environment.

• Social activities such as music therapy, arts and crafts, and group games to stimulate cognitive and emotional well-being.

• Assistance with daily activities like eating, grooming, and mobility.

• Health monitoring, including medication management and basic medical care.

Founded in 1925, the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (BSCP) holds a pivotal place in American labor history established 100 years ago, as the first Black labor union in America to be chartered under the American Federation Labor (AFL). Organized and co-founded by A. Philip Randolph and a group of dedicated porters, the BSCP fought tirelessly for the rights and dignity of its members, who endured harsh working conditions and discrimination. The union’s formation marked a significant step towards the advancement of labor, civil rights and equity for African Americans.

“While the job of a porter was viewed by some as menial, their work ethic, perseverance and self-discipline provided what would become the foundation of the Black middle class,” said Hughes.

The Descendants of Distinction honorees include Cook County Commissioner Donna Miller and fashion phenom Barbara Bates, who are both proud descendants of members of the BSCP.

“The legacy of the Pullman porters became fertile ground for generations of successful descendants of African American professionals including doctors, lawyers, engineers, businessmen and women, and public servants, and it all started with the influence and leadership of a young New York organizer A. Philip Randolph,” added Hughes.

federal agency tasked with ensuring food is safe. Many of these GRAS ingredients have been linked to serious health problems and chronic diseases.

The Secretary of State oversees Illinois’ organ donation registry, which is one of the largest in the nation. Studies have shown that organ damage and failure is a consequence of the health risks associated with chemical additives, particularly in children. Keeping donors’ organs

healthy for individuals suffering from life-threatening diseases or injuries who need transplants is critical.

European and other nations have outlawed many GRAS chemicals and mandate that corporations formulate their products with safer alternatives. In the U.S., California recently passed a law that outlaws several harmful chemicals in the food supply that goes into effect in 2027.

• Nutritious meals and snacks tailored to dietary needs. These programs are specifically designed to address the needs of individuals in the early to mid-stages of dementia, helping them maintain independence while providing the structure and support they require.

Benefits for Participants

For individuals with Alzheimer’s or dementia, adult daycare centers provide a meaningful and enriching experience. Social interaction, a cornerstone of these programs, helps reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness, which are common among those living with memory loss.

Activities like music therapy and memory games are not only enjoyable but can also slow cognitive decline and boost mood. Exercise programs and physical activities promote overall health and mobility, while a consistent daily routine helps minimize confusion and anxiety.

The safe, secure setting of an adult daycare center ensures participants’ well-being, offering caregivers peace of mind knowing their loved ones are in a nurturing environment.

Support for Caregivers

Adult daycare services are a vital resource for caregivers, providing them with the opportunity to take a break from their demanding responsibilities. Caregivers often experience high levels of stress and burnout, and these programs allow them time to work, run errands, or simply rest, knowing their loved ones are receiving quality care.

Studies show that caregivers who utilize adult daycare services report lower levels of stress and greater overall satisfaction, enabling them to provide better care at home.

Affordability and Accessibility Compared to full-time in-home or residential care, adult daycare is a more affordable option for many families. Some centers offer sliding-scale fees based on income, and financial assistance may be available through Medicaid, veterans’ benefits, or local community programs.

With over 4,000 adult daycare centers across the United States, families can typically find a facility nearby. Many centers specialize in dementia care, offering staff trained to handle the unique challenges of Alzheimer’s and other memory-related conditions.

Finding the Right Program

When selecting an adult daycare center, families should consider factors such as location, cost, services provided, and the facility’s approach to dementia care. Visiting the center and observing its activities can help determine if it’s the right fit.

Adult daycare programs are more than just a care solution— they’re a source of connection, purpose, and support for individuals with dementia and their families. As these programs continue to grow, they are shaping the future of care for Alzheimer’s and dementia, one day at a time.

How to educate your kids now about creating long-lasting healthy money habits

As you solidify your New Year’s resolutions, it’s a great time to start having a conversation with your kids -- whether they’re in elementary school, high school, or college — about smart ways to navigate finances. Starting the conversation earlier on will help to create healthy money habits as their grow, ultimately benefiting their financial future. To help you get started, here are tips that make it easier for kids of all ages to learn how to save, budget and begin managing their finances more independently:

1

Start the conversation

It’s never too early to start talking about money in a realistic way so kids can understand how it’s used to support your lifestyle and help you achieve your goals and dreams. Begin the conversation in an age-appropriate way that highlights ideas, such as knowing the difference between needs and wants, saving for something special, and tracking the money you earn, as well as the money you spend. For example, young children can understand the idea of saving up money from their allowance or lemonade stand to buy something they want in the future.

2

Take notes and use tools

As your kids get older, explain the budgeting basics – even as simple as listing what you earn and what you spend, so you can ensure you won’t spend more than you have. Any leftover money is best put in savings first, then they can consider working toward items or experiences they might want to buy. There are many budgeting resources out there, so you can find the one that works for you, including budget worksheets to track spending.

3

Get organized and go digital

Financial confidence starts with getting organized. You can find easy-to-use budgeting tools that work for kids and parents both, with different levels of parental oversight and management suitable for different age groups. Whether it’s a first banking account,

or an account geared towards a high school or college student, there are multiple options that can help students of various ages with firsthand digital transactions and account balances, assisting with budgeting and saving.

4Plan for the future

According to Bankrate, 59% of Americans are uncomfortable with the amount of emergency savings they have, and 27% have no emergency fund at all. It’s important for kids of all ages to know that unexpected events in life can happen, so planning ahead may help reduce stress and better cope with whatever may occur. For this reason, building an emergency fund or saving for a rainy day is a crucial skill to learn.

Your kids can start learning and practicing vital

money skills now that will stay with them for life, as well as how to use financial tools so they will be able to stay on top of their finances and achieve their goals.

Dream Exchange Paves the Way for Economic Empowerment

CHICAGO, PRNewswire -- Dream Exchange, the first-ever minority-controlled stock exchange in formation in the history of the United States, is preparing to open doors and increase the economic equality among all communities and small businesses creating access to public markets for all through a registered stock exchange. Access to public markets to these underserved areas will increase further when the legislation known as the Main Street Growth Act (“MSGA”) passes the United States Congress. The MSGA creates a new type of stock exchange designed to cater to early-stage companies and smaller businesses called a venture exchange.

Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy is rooted in the fight for equality—not only in civil rights but also in economic opportunity. With Dr. King’s vision in mind, the Dream Exchange aims to bridge the gap of financial access faced by a large number of businesses in the country, many of which are minority-owned.

Since the 1990s, the number of small-tomid-sized initial public offerings (“IPOs”) has significantly declined, leaving many businesses without access to the public capital markets

needed to grow. Today, only a tiny percentage of companies listed on exchanges are minority-owned showing that the divide is still being overlooked.

“Economic inequality remains one of the greatest barriers to achieving true equality in America,” said Dream Exchange CEO Joe Cecala. “Dream Exchange was created to open doors that have long been closed, giving minority-owned businesses and other small enterprises the financial tools they need to thrive.”

According to the IPO Task Force Report delivered to the Treasury Department in 2011 (which can be found here), research shows that from 1980 to 2005, firms less than five years old accounted for all net job growth in the U.S. and, in fact, 92% of job growth occurs after a company’s initial public offering. However, without access to public capital markets, small businesses, and especially minority-owned businesses are often excluded from this growth potential. Once the MSGA is passed, the Dream Exchange plans to introduce its venture exchange, which will be designed to make public markets available to early-stage growth companies, fostering wealth creation and economic

empowerment where it’s needed most.

As we take time to reflect on our nation’s history and on the history and contributions to America from the Black community, the Dream Exchange stands as a positive solution to the work yet to be done and it represents a critical step toward correcting imbalances in economic opportunities for the nation’s small business community, especially minority-owned businesses.

The Dream Exchange has submitted a preliminary draft of its application to the Securities and Exchange Commission (“SEC”) to become the first minority-controlled company to operate a licensed stock exchange in the history of the United States and is in the process of responding to comments from the SEC, as well as preparing its operations for when it receives approval. In addition, Dream Exchange is championing the creation of a new type of stock exchange called a venture exchange, which will list and trade the securities of smaller, early-stage companies. Dream Exchange’s mission is to create equal access to a marketplace that instills ethics, humanity, and fairness into finance.

NEW ORLEANS ARTIST ‘QUEEN TAHJ’

BECOMES FIRST EVER TO HANDCRAFT SUPER BOWL LIX LOGO AND THEME ART

(Black PR Wire) NEW YORK – The NFL announced recently that renowned New Orleans artist Tahj ‘Queen Tahj’ Williams will be the first ever to handcraft both the Super Bowl logo and theme art for Super Bowl LIX. Following her debut as the first artist to create a Super Bowl logo, the NFL has unveiled Queen Tahj’s Super Bowl LIX theme art.

For both pieces, Queen Tahj brings the spirit of New Orleans to life through her intricate, handsewn beadwork, which reflects her Black Masking culture and combines her tribe’s heritage with the vibrant energy of Super Bowl in the Crescent City. The NFL captured her journey and artistry in a hero video that spotlights the beadwork that defines her artistry (watch it here).

For the recently released Super Bowl theme art, Queen Tahj’s inspiration came from her passion for preserving the Black Masking tradition while bringing fresh creativity to its craft. Her designs feature bold pinks, deep reds, chartreuses and lush greens, blending traditional elements with modern creativity in her intricate, hand-sewn beadwork. These colors symbolize the vibrancy of New Orleans and honor the Black Masking tradition, rooted in the deep cultural connections between African and Native American heritage. It originated as a celebration on the backstreets when African Americans were initially excluded from mainstream Mardi Gras festivities.

captain of my middle school football team, football has played a tremendous role in my life by teaching me to me to focus on my dreams without worrying about what society thinks is for girls or boys. It’s the same spirit of determination that shapes my work today. Just as the NFL connects communities around the world through football, I hope my work brings people together to celebrate the history of New Orleans and inspires future generations to keep our traditions alive.”

“This partnership is a dream come true and an opportunity to share the beauty of Black Masking culture with the world,” said Queen Tahj. “Being the only girl and

Queen Tahj, a member of the Golden Eagles Tribe, is a master in the intricate art of Black Masking suit design—a tradition deeply rooted in the Indigenous and

African heritage of New Orleans. These suits, often created over a year of meticulous hand-sewing and beadwork, are a central part of Mardi Gras, St. Joseph’s Night, and Super Sunday celebrations.

Queen Tahj’s Super Bowl theme art will be prominently featured on digital game tickets, the official program cover, and on a grand display on the exterior of the Hyatt Regency New Orleans, bringing the city to life throughout the week’s celebrations.

“We knew from the start that we wanted this year’s theme art to capture the essence of New Orleans,” said Marissa Solis, NFL senior vice president of global brand and consumer marketing. “Queen Tahj’s deep connection to her community and extraordinary talent made her the perfect artist for this project. Her work authentically honors the cultural roots of New Orleans while celebrating the city’s vibrant spirit, and we’re excited to spotlight it on the Super Bowl stage and honor the communities that make New Orleans so special.”

The NFL’s partnership with Queen Tahj highlights the league’s commitment to celebrating local culture and ensuring that Super Bowl LIX allows the New Orleans community to see itself reflected on one of the world’s biggest stages. Super Bowl LIX will take place at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana, on Sunday, Feb. 9. Fans can look forward to seeing Queen Tahj’s unique artwork as part of this historic celebration.

Kokandy Productions Opens Submissions for the 2025 CHICAGO MUSICAL THEATRE FESTIVAL

CHICAGO – Kokandy Productions is pleased to open submissions for the 2025 Chicago Musical Theatre Festival (CMTF), returning April 3 – 6, 2025 on The Chopin Theatre Mainstage, 1543 W. Division St. in Chicago. Five finalists will be chosen to perform concert presentations during the 2025 Festival, a vital opportunity for new musical development in Chicago.

Submission guidelines, FAQs and applications can be found at kokandyproductions.com/cmtf. The deadline for submissions is Sunday, February 2. There is no fee to apply for or participate in the Festival. Finalists will be announced in early March 2025.

Now in its 8th year, CMTF was created with the belief that there’s a wealth of musical theatre creators in Chicago and around the country, but the high risks of producing new musicals offers limited opportunities for emerging authors to have their work seen and heard. CMTF is designed to provide much-needed artistic resources for writers to have their work supported, explored, and most importantly – performed!

Festival Producer Nicholas Reinhart comments, “In a world dominated by rehashed and ‘rebooted’ IP, it is an immense pleasure to support new musical theatre writers in bringing their original work to life, often for the very first time. During our exciting run at Steppenwolf

in 2024, it was clear Chicago audiences are hungry for new work, and we are eager to continue to uplift and celebrate a new generation of talent this April at our home at The Chopin Theatre.”

Since its inception in 2014 by Underscore Theatre Company, CMTF has brought 55 new musicals to Chicago stages. Following a four-year hiatus, CMTF returned last year under the stewardship of Kokandy Productions. During its first year back, the Festival received over 100 submissions, culminating in five concert presentations as part of Steppenwolf Theatre’s LookOut Series.

Tickets for the 2025 Chicago Musical Theatre Festival will go on sale at a later date.

Founded in 2010, Kokandy Productions seeks to leverage the heightened reality of musical theatre to tell complex and challenging stories, with a focus on contributing to the development of Chicago-based musical theatre artists, and raising the profile of Chicago’s non-Equity musical theatre community.

The company’s artistic staff is comprised of Derek Van Barham (Producing Artistic Director), Scot T. Kokandy (Executive Producer) and Adrian Abel Azevedo & Leda Hoffman (Artistic Associates). The Board of Directors includes Preston Cropp, Scot T. Kokandy, Danielle Sparklin and Katie Svaicer.

Get Your House In Order

“To Insure or Not Insure. Is That a Question?”

Statistics show that 70% of people over age 65 today will require some form of long-term care during their lifetime. The reason that I write this column every week is to help those seven (7) out of ten (10) families prepare for the life-changing events that are ahead for them. I want to inform and educate families on how to avoid bankruptcy and the loss of their acquired assets.

Did you know the excessive cost of healthcare, including long-term care, is the number one reason for bankruptcy of the elderly; it is unfortunate, but true. It would be wonderful if folks understood the importance of planning for their elder years in their younger years. My mom used to say,” old too soon and smart too late.”

Did you know that you can purchase a life insurance policy and add to it a long-term care insurance rider? For those families looking ahead, and unable to pay the high premiums associated with long term care insurance, this hybrid life insurance product may be their answer. It is like having your cake and eating it too.

The premium for a hybrid life insurance product is higher than a conventional whole life policy, but much less than a long-term care insurance policy. It may be just the insurance product that seven out of ten families need to avoid becoming a bankruptcy statistic. To insure or not insure. Is that a question knowing the statistics?

Bye for now, Bren.

As Black History Month Nears, Corporations Grapple with DEI, A New Book Challenges Leaders to Build on Results, Not Color

LAS VEGAS, PRNewswire -- With Black History Month around the corner and DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) practices under scrutiny, corporate America faces a defining moment. TaChelle Lawson, a Las Vegas-based author and business strategist, is leading the conversation with her debut book, Black is NOT a Credential: The Corporate Scam of DEI. The book, which hit #1 in Business Ethics and #2 in Diversity & Inclusion on Amazon within three days of release, offers a fresh, results-driven perspective on DEI, urging companies to shift from performative actions to sustainable strategies rooted in respect and capability.

“Corporations are at a crossroads,” Lawson states. “Some are doubling down on DEI commitments, while others are backing away entirely. Consider the division and confusion this creates for employees and stakeholders alike. As Black History Month approaches, it’s a great time to ask: How do we honor Dr. King’s vision in 2025?”

Lawson’s book provides a playbook for leaders to move beyond superficial metrics and focus on the values of unity and character over color. Released on January 14, 2025, Black is NOT a Credential dismantles the “corporate DEI scam” and challenges leaders to accept accountability and rethink what diversity means before abandoning it or doubling down.

“Dr. King’s legacy wasn’t about quotas or checkboxes,” Lawson continues. “Think about it. His message is rooted in respect–where behavior and systems are created that judge people based on their contributions, not their catego-

ries. Companies must decide whether to lead with integrity or continue the cycle of empty promises and further the divide.’’

Timely Themes for National Discussion: Lawson will be available for interviews and commentary on MLK Day and throughout Black History Month, addressing topics such as:

Why many DEI initiatives fail and how to fix them.

The impact of corporate indecision on DEI during Black History Month.

Practical strategies for leaders to build diversity without division.

How to hold corporations accountable for meaningful change.

This provocative and timely book has already sparked conversations nationwide and is poised to inspire leaders to rethink their approach to inclusion. The ebook is available for purchase on Amazon Kindle.

TaChelle Lawson is a Las Vegas-based author, speaker, and business strategist with over 20 years of experience. As the founder and president of FIG, a leading business strategy and diversity communications firm, Lawson takes a no-nonsense approach to DEI, positioning her as a thought leader in its future. Her fresh voice and thought-provoking insights have made her a sought-after speaker, and Black is NOT a Credential marks the first installment in her hard-hitting “NOT a Credential” series. COLOR OF CHANGE REACTS TO DEPT. OF JUSTICE’S

REPORT OF 1921 TULSA RACE MASSACRE, CALLS FOR NEW METHODS OF RESTITUTION

(Black PR Wire) NATIONAL – Recently, the Department of Justice issued a report on the Tulsa Race Massacre following a months-long review and evaluation. The report found that there is no living perpetrator to be prosecuted but publicly acknowledged the events and recognized the crimes committed, moving towards the closure long sought by descendants of victims of the massacre.

The review began September 2024, more than 100 years after the Tulsa Race Massacre took place. On May 31st of 1921, Black residents of the neighborhood of Greenwood in Tulsa, Oklahoma were attacked and murdered by a group of white Tulsans. Greenwood, which is now remembered as “Black Wall Street,” was at the time a vibrant neighborhood and a thriving site of Black business and economic prosperity. In the attack, hundreds of Black people lost their lives; their houses, churches, and businesses were burned down; and their property was stolen; completely decimating the community. In the century since, there has been no recourse for the crimes committed, despite survivors and descendants demanding civil and financial reparations.

The Department of Justice’s report, done under the Emmett Till Unsolved Civil Rights Crimes Act, is the first time the Justice Department has acknowledged the crimes committed in 1921 and conceded that the massacre was a deliberate, racially-motivated act. While their evaluation found no method of restitution, it confirms the continued need for community engagement and social justice efforts.

Brandon Tucker, Senior Director of Policy and Government Affairs at Color Of Change, issued the following statement:

“Learning that no justice will be served in the Tulsa Race Massacre outside of recognition that this atrocity took place is not surprising. We must develop the will to create new mechanisms for restitution—not only for the victims of this mass murder but for Black families affected by every instance of large-scale violence inflicted by white supremacist groups, law enforcement, and lynch mobs that have devastated Black communities and eroded generations of Black wealth. We must move beyond recognition to action, and explore new ways to address and heal the injustices perpetrated against Black people in this country.”

The Tulsa Race Massacre is another instance of state-sanctioned violence against Black communities which has gone largely unrecognized. The efforts to erase this moment in history, which has lasting effects a century later, have further hindered the pursuit of justice and attest

to the country’s large-scale acceptance of anti-Black violence. The Department of Justice’s recognition of the egregious wrong done against the residents and descendants of Greenwood is an essential first step, but there is much more to be done for racial recognition. Color Of Change calls on government leaders, advocates, and the public to support policies and initiatives that reform the legal system, ensuring justice for all those harmed by white supremacy.

“The Justice Department’s report on the Tulsa Race Massacre is the culmination of a community’s desire to seek justice. But this is just the beginning. We must fight to make sure this community and so many others that have been wounded by white supremacy receive healing.”

Color Of Change is the nation’s largest online racial justice organization. We help people respond effectively to injustice in the world around us. As a national online force driven by millions of members, we move decision-makers in corporations and governments to create a more human and less hostile world for Black people in America. (StatePoint) Customer expectations continue to evolve at breakneck speed, and 2025 is likely to usher in further changes to brick-and-mortar stores as retailers compete for shoppers’ attention. With Gen-Z’s spending power projected to reach $12 trillion by 2030—according to Nielsen IQ—industry experts say that they’re leading the retail revolution.

“Gen-Z are digital natives, fiercely value-driven, and accustomed to on-demand, personalized experiences. As such, shoppers can expect retailers to dive into new technologies as they strive to deliver innovative experiences that are as seamless and personalized as they are meaningful in the new year,” says Christa Anz, global marketing director at Sensormatic Solutions, a leading global retail solutions provider.

According to Sensormatic Solutions data, experience and convenience remain top factors in consumer purchasing decisions among all

generations, with crowds and lines (53%), out-ofstocks (46%) and long waits for pickups (29%) cited as shoppers’ top pain points. Fortunately, the foundation for improvements has been laid. Retailers are employing emerging technology to meet these desires, and consumers will soon start to see the benefits.

For example, solutions that draw on organizational data to provide predictive analytic insights can help retailers get ahead of disruptions to ensure customer service issues are addressed proactively and resolved quickly. Meanwhile, the same types of data can be used to enhance personalization and gamification in retail apps, websites and loyalty programs, making them simpler and more satisfying for shoppers to use.

Technology and personalization efforts will also help ensure customers get the products they want, right when they want them.

RFID-enhanced inventory tracking will improve instore pickup, and end-to-end supply chain digitalization efforts will help retailers and manufacturers address material shortages, severe weather and

other challenges expected in 2025. Additionally, shoppers can expect to be connected with products they need—and those they don’t yet know they need— thanks to the ubiquity of data retailers now have access to and refinements in the way businesses use that information to personalize offers. According to “Frontiers in Psychology,” personalization efforts boost loyalty in 68% of customers, making the implementation of this technology a win-win.

Another rising trend is retail media.

P2PI predicts that in 2025, retail media advertising spend will surpass linear TV spend. Despite their popularity, most consumers are unaware of how retail media networks impact their shopping experiences and improve their interactions with brands. Using in-store and online data to create omnichannel customer and demographic profiles, retail media networks help stores adjust inventory tactics, promotions, displays and more to reflect the preferences of their customers.

On the security side of the equation, Sensormatic Solutions notes that the impact that loss prevention and safety measures will have on customers will likely wane this year. This shift comes as more retailers adopt a smart hybrid approach, with a focus on balancing safety and satisfaction. The combination of physical deterrents and item- or category-level inventory data allows retailers to protect the most at-risk parts of the store (and the people in them) without adding unnecessary friction elsewhere. Finally, market pressures will continue to guide retailers. As 2025 unfolds, private-label products are expected to gain popularity, appealing to shoppers looking to save and retailers looking to boost revenue.

“The preferences of Gen Z are a reflection of where the industry is at this moment; listening to Gen Z’s needs will help retailers improve both their own operations and the ways they interact with shoppers,” says Anz.
