Burst Into Books Encourages Children To Read And Engage With Books
Continued from page 1
BY TIA CAROL JONES
The idea for Burst Into Books came from a group of mothers who noticed there was a lack of programming that was representative of their sons. To find programs for their sons to participate in, they had to go outside of their neighborhood. Gorham decided to start a book club that became Burst Into Books, a non-profit that aims to highlight books written by Black authors. The goal is for Black children to see themselves represented in literature and to encourage reading among Black children.
Burst Into Books creates culturally relevant opportunities for families on the South side of Chicago, through events, programs and services to connect with the community and with one another. The mission also includes creating the next generation of Black authors.
The Burst Into Books Community Art Space opened on July 6th in the Roseland neighborhood. Gorham started her book club as a teacher in Pullman, so having the art space in Roseland feels like a full circle moment for her.
“This is an opportunity for us to really have a home base for our work. A lot of times our work is done in partnership with schools, or libraries or other community spaces, but now we have our own space, where we do programming and we can sell and also give out the books that are from Black authors,” Gorham said.
Gorham said with the Burst Into Books Community Art Space, she is looking to partner with other community organizations throughout Chicago. It has been exciting for her to have a space where families can come for programming and Burst Into Books now has headquarters for its work. Gorham also believes having the space in the storefront in Roseland creates awareness for a community and can serve as something that makes a positive impact on the community and its residents.
“There are so many beautiful families and organizations doing great work in Roseland, so we’re excited about what is going to come from that space,” she said.
Gorham believes that it is important to engage children in
reading at an early age. As a teacher, she understands how a person is introduced to a concept, like reading or science or math, can dictate how they engage with it later in life. When children are introduced to books at an early age, books become a part of their lives.
What I’ve noticed is that kids enjoy reading, from birth, if all they’ve seen is books and they’re in a book rich home and they’re going to the library as part of an activity, their relationship with books is a lot different, she said.
Gorham has seen children who are in middle school and high school become lovers of reading because they were exposed to different kinds of books and have access to a world they did not know existed. She believes that the earlier children are introduced to books, reading becomes less of a struggle.
Burst Into Books has guest authors at the books clubs so the children can meet the people who wrote the books they are reading. They have been able to Zoom in authors who live outside the city or state, just so the children can see the authors and interact with them. Burst Into Books recently hosted its festival in Pullman. Families in attendance had the opportunity to meet authors, poets, playwrights and other kinds of writers. The headlining author for the festival is always a Black author.
“I think it’s important that kids are able to see a name and see the person that goes with that name and they’re able to one day aspire to be that name, as well,” Gorham said.
With the festival, book clubs and other programs, Gorham wants the children to see the process of becoming an author isn’t as difficult as it seems, as long as there are accessible resources. Burst Into Books also works with self-published and traditionally published authors.
Gorham believes that reading is the pathway to the community understanding who they are and the thing that will rebuild the community.
“I believe we don’t even understand how powerful we are in our community because we haven’t been exposed to knowledge,” she said.

Chicago Public Schools and the Chicago Health Department Reminds Families to Update Vaccinations and Schedule Physicals Ahead of the 2024-25 School Year
Chicago Public Schools (CPS) is reminding families to make sure their children’s vaccinations are up to date and compliant with federally-required vaccines and annual physical exams for school attendance before the Aug. 26th first day of the 2024-25 school year. Updated vaccinations are crucial in helping the District maintain a healthy school environment.
Physical examinations and proof of required immunizations must be submitted to school administrators by October 15, 2024. Physical exams are required for students in Pre-K, Kindergarten, sixth grade, ninth grade, and any students entering CPS for the first time.
“As we approach the first day of school on August
26th, it’s critical that parents and guardians take the time to make health care appointments and update their vaccines to protect students and staff from vaccine-preventable diseases, ” said CPS CEO Pedro Martinez. “We want to see all of our students on Monday, August 26th and every day after that, healthy and ready to learn. Families can access their child’s official immunization records with the State of Illinois via Vax Verify. The District continues to supplement access to care through a variety of sources, including partner-managed School-Based Health Centers, CPS-managed vaccination events, and various collaborations with the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH).
Legislation Eliminating Barriers for Returning Residents Signed into Law
Secretary of State’s Office to Provide Free ID Cards to Re-Entry Applicants
Broadcast Quality Video Download of Press Conference
An initiative championed by Illinois State Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias’ office that removes barriers for individuals to successfully return following incarceration was signed into law today by Governor JB Pritzker.
The new law simplifies and speeds up the process to obtain a free state ID for incarcerated people, eliminating barriers and equipping them with a critical component for successful re-entry following their release from jail or prison.
The legislation builds on Giannoulias’ Restorative Justice Initiative, which his office has implemented and includes funding
for Illinois Department of Corrections libraries and helping newly released individuals to obtain their driver’s licenses and secure employment. As part of this new initiative, Giannoulias’ office will host a series of educational seminars with correctional facilities to help increase awareness and participation in the program.
Giannoulias helped draft Senate Bill 2803, which was sponsored by State Senator Chris Belt (57th Senate District—Swansea) and State Representative Justin Slaughter (27th House District— Chicago).
hand is a simple but extremely impactful way we can help set people up for success,” said State Senator Robert Peters (13th Senate District—Chicago), a chief co-sponsor of the bill who has been a strong advocate for the program. “I’m thrilled we are simplifying this process and making having an ID card a reality for more people.”
The new law enables individuals to bypass long wait times and red tape associated with obtaining documents required for a state ID, which has been a major obstacle:
Fighting for a different future
The Alzheimer’s Association Illinois Chapter is thrilled to announce the Alzheimer’s Association Chicago Walk to End Alzheimer’s® on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at Soldier Field’s Southeast Lawn. At the Alzheimer’s Association, we’re fighting for a brighter future—a future without Alzheimer’s. For families facing the disease today, for more time with loved ones, and for groundbreaking treatments, we are closer than ever to stopping Alzheimer’s. But to reach this goal, we need you. Join us for the world’s largest fundraiser to fight Alzheimer’s and all other dementias.
“Access to opportunities and basic needs is critical for successful re-entry following incarceration,” Giannoulias said. “It starts with having a valid ID, which is necessary to secure everything from employment to housing, healthcare and a bank account. This law reduces recidivism by providing stability and accessibility for those seeking to overcome the challenges presented by this transition and setting them up for success.”

“Individuals who have served their time in a correctional facility deserve an opportunity to find housing, employment, and other necessary steps towards avoiding recidivism and getting back on track towards a successful civilian life, none of which is possible without access to identification,” said Governor Pritzker. “By simplifying that process, we’re empowering people to make choices about their futures with the necessary tools in their arsenal to become contributing, law-abiding members of our society.”
“In order to ensure individuals are set up for a successful re-entry, we need to break down the existing hurdles that are presented following release,” Belt said. “This legislation will help us provide people with the simple – but essential – tool of an ID card and reduce the barriers they face upon release.”
“Re-entering already comes with a host of challenges. Obtaining an ID card is a challenge we can easily remedy that has a significant impact,” Slaughter said. “An ID card is often the ticket to many programs that assist with ensuring a successful re-entry process and should not be difficult or challenging to obtain.”
“Making sure individuals re-entering have an ID card in-
Gives the Secretary of State’s office the authority to waive the requirement for a certified birth certificate as proof of identity and confirmation of date of birth if the person has previously held an Illinois driver’s license or ID card. This will greatly reduce the amount of paperwork and time it takes for individuals to obtain an ID card because they will not need to contact their county of birth to receive a new copy of their birth certificate. Applicants, especially those born out-of-state, may also face issues of paying for the new copy and getting it sent to their facility.
Allows the office to waive the requirement for a Social Security card if the Secretary of State’s office can verify the person’s Social Security number directly with the federal Social Security Administration. In the past, prospective applicants were required to wait until they were less than 180 days prior to their release before applying for a replacement card and could not apply for their ID until they had their replacement card.
Applies to all Illinois Department of Corrections, Department of Juvenile Justice and – for the first time – Federal Correctional Facilities as well as County jails in the state. Each jurisdiction is provided with the option to opt out.
Simplifies the process and removes the fees for individuals who previously did not have an Illinois driver’s license or ID card and enables them to either obtain a state ID or temporary card within 30 days of their release date, as well as receive a standard hard card in the mail.
The legislation builds on the success of partnerships between the Secretary of State’s office and the Illinois Department of Corrections as well as a pilot launched earlier this year with Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart’s office.
“This is a pivotal moment in the fight against Alzheimer’s. There are now treatments that change the course of the disease,” said, Mary DeMars, Alzheimer’s Association Walk Director “We hope that everyone in our community can join us by starting a team to help the Alzheimer’s Association raise awareness and funds for families facing the disease today, take more steps toward treatments and finally ending this disease.”

Hebru Brantley to Unveil New Permanent Commission at THE COLLECTION: Where Art Meets Fashion at Fashion Outlets of Chicago
ROSEMONT, Ill. – THE COLLECTION: Where Art Meets Fashion, the multifaceted contemporary art program located within Fashion Outlets of Chicago, with support from the Village of Rosemont, today announced the program’s newest site-specific installation, Midnight Blue, by celebrated Chicago-native artist Hebru Brantley featuring his iconic Flyboy character. The permanent work will make its debut at the center on Friday, Sept. 20.
“When we established THE COLLECTION, we set out to provide Fashion Outlets of Chicago shoppers with an unparalleled, yet approachable visual art experience,” said Katie Walsh, Senior Marketing Manager at Fashion Outlets of Chicago.
“With the addition of this incredible work by an artist as iconic as Hebru Brantley, we are demonstrating our commitment to providing world-class, museum-quality work to the public in an unexpected, unique setting.”
Enigmatic and abstract, Midnight Blue draws inspiration from the world of Jazz, particularly the atmosphere created in the classic tune, “Round Midnight.” The focus of the work is on capturing a feeling – a state of being lost in the moment, carried away by the interplay of colors and shapes. These colors themselves become a dreamscape, inviting the viewer to surrender to their own interpretation. Using shapes that hint at camouflage, the work introduces a layer of tension, reflecting the artist’s desire to create a
work that resonates on an emotional level, similar to the power of music, all while existing in a dynamic relationship with its environment.
“Ultimately, Midnight Blue is about setting a mood, a vibe, just as a great Jazz piece can transport the listener,” said Brantley. “This commission by Fashion Outlets of Chicago was an incredible opportunity to create a work that is simultaneously unexpected and immersive. I’m thrilled to join my colleagues and friends represented in THE COLLECTION and I can’t wait for visitors to engage with Midnight Blue for years to come.”
Known for his distinctive, narrative-driven work that revolves around conceptualized characters, Brantley utilizes the characters to address complex ideas while exploring color palettes, motifs and the characters themselves to create an air of innocence around his layered and multifaceted works.

Unlocks the Secrets to Strong Relationships in Latest Book, “Lazy Love”
HOUSTON, PRNewswire -- Pastor Keion Henderson, bestselling author, spiritual leader, and renowned pastor of The Lighthouse Church and Ministries in Houston, announces the release of his latest book, Lazy Love: Recognizing and Reversing the 4 Threats to any Successful Relationship, a profound exploration of the ways in which we often fall short in our relationships. We make assumptions. We forget to show our affection. We grow lazy. This prevents us from being fully known and enjoyed by those around us and stops us from giving who we are without expecting anything in return.”
delivers the Word of God with rapid-fire precision amongst a new generation of believers as he continues to keep faith relevant in today’s culture.
The launch of Lazy Love comes in advance of Pastor Henderson’s third annual Cry Out Conference 2025, which takes place from May 1-3, 2025, at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas. To pre-register for Cry Out 2025 and for additional information, please visit cryoutexperience.com.
In Lazy Love, Pastor Henderson unpacks the four kinds of love mentioned in the Bible — eros (attraction), phileo (friendship), storge (familial), and agape (spiritual love). Through insightful analysis and personal anecdotes, he demonstrates how to understand the meaning behind each type of love, and how they shape our relationships and personal lives. Pastor Henderson also guides readers in identifying and overcoming the unhealthy practices that often lead to damaged or broken relationships and offers practical advice and inspiration for readers seeking to cultivate deeper, more meaningful connections.
“The good news is that each of us can learn to love better and to improve our relationships—with our partners, our children, our friends, our co-workers, and our neighbors,” Pastor Henderson explains. “Lazy Love is a roadmap to becoming better at loving others in all aspects of life.”

(StatePoint) Amid technology advances enabling scammers to commit fraud, elders and their loved ones need to stay informed. Typically, elder scams involve the transfer of money to a stranger or imposter for a promised benefit or good. In 2023, banks reported more than $27 billion in suspicious activity related to elder scams, according to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, and reports filed by the public to the Federal Bureau of Investigation indi-
cated an average loss of more than $33,000 per case. And these numbers may be conservative, as elder fraud cases may be underreported.
One technology behind these staggering figures is artificial intelligence (AI). Advanced methods of masking one’s identity using AI make it difficult to detect fakes. Voice print – or voice clone – scamming is becoming more of an issue when it comes to impersonation fraud. Using voice clips from social media or by calling and having a brief conversation with someone, criminals can generate an imitation to be used as part of their ruse. “Older adults are often easier prey for these types of fakes, because a recognized voice when applied to certain scam strategies is often enough to elicit action,” says Mark Kwapiszeski, head of Enterprise Fraud at PNC.
Two Scam Strategies to Watch For
Most scams targeting elders generally follow one or two main strategies: 1) elicit strong feelings and apply a sense of urgency to get someone to act quickly before thinking, and/or 2) entice someone with an offer that seems too good to be true, yet too alluring to pass up. Here are some of the more common types of elder scams:
Scams That Apply a Sense of Urgency:
• Tech Support. Someone will claim they need to remotely access the victim’s computer to fix a software problem, then use that access to steal personal or financial information.
• Government Imposter. The fraudster may tell the victim they owe a debt that must be paid immediately or face arrest, asset seizure or termination of benefits.
• Grandparent. An elaborate story is given by phone and sometimes involves a voice print of an actual grandchild, claiming a loved one is in trouble and needs money to be protected.
Scams That Offer Something Too Good to Be True:
• Investment. The scammer makes claims of a high-return investment to trick the victim into giving them money, often asking to be paid in an unconventional way, like cryptocurrency, where there’s little to no chance of recovering the funds.
• Romance. The scammer develops a fake identity and creates the illusion of a romantic relationship to manipulate or steal from the victim.
• Lottery/Sweepstakes. Scammers make contact by phone or mail to tell the victim they’ve won the lottery or a sweepstakes but claim the elder has to remit a processing fee before they can get their prize.
Take Protective Measures and Stay Alert
The most effective way of preventing fraud is to pause when being rushed and take time to verify the legitimacy of both the person making contact and their claims. To reduce the odds of your voice being cloned, experts suggest exercising caution when speaking on the phone with strangers. If someone unfamiliar contacts you, disconnect from the original communication channel, verify their identity, then attempt to make contact through a different channel. For instance, hang up the phone, get a number for the company, government agency or family member from a trusted source (such as a company’s official website) and use that to call back and verify.
When it comes to scammers that establish a relationship over time, verify legitimacy using third-party resources before investing. Be leery of anyone asking for nontraditional payment forms, and when logic may be clouded by romantic feelings, confide in someone you trust for an objective opinion.
