Entrepreneur Darrell Spencer has created a men’s skincare line that incorporates scents and pheromones. Crowned Skin was launched in April 2024 with body butters and body oils. Both Spencer’s parents were hard working and he watched them grind and make ends meet. Spencer said his entrepreneurial spirit came from watching his father who was a Chicago Police officer and taught himself about real estate.

THRESHOLDS CENTER FOR MENTAL
WELLBEING - SOUTH HOLDS RIBBON
CUTTING FOR EXPANDED MENTAL HEALTH
CARE SERVICES
Organization will bring more accessible mental health services to Chicago’s south side; will help remove barriers to necessary care Chicago, Ill. -- Thresholds, one of the largest mental health and substance use treatment providers in Chicago, held an official ribbon cutting and open house at its Center for Mental Wellbeing - South (Center) to announce the expansion of the Center’s accessible, person-centered, evidence-based, individualized care for community members and celebrate the new building expansion. In 2023, the Center received a grant to become a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC), allowing them to offer expanded mental health care services, and making them one of just 19 clinics with the same designation in Illinois.
“We’re thrilled to be able to open the doors on the Thresholds expansion on the South Side, and we’re so thankful to our incredible staff, our inspiring and resilient members and our partners and donors who help make this work possible,” said Thresholds President and CEO Mark Ishaug. “There’s a need throughout the city, but especially here on the South Side, for comprehensive and accessible care. Thresholds is dedicated to ensuring that everyone, regardless of their income, housing or insurance status is able to receive the support they need to live fulfilling lives.”
Through the CCBHC designation and funding, the Center will now offer the following expanded services:
Individual and group therapy
Psychiatry
Medication Management
Substance Use Treatment
Care Coordination and Case Management
Crisis Services and Intervention
Psychosocial Rehabilitation
Peer Support Services
Primary Care Integration
The CCBHC model prioritizes coordinated, comprehensive health care and ensures person-centered treatment. Participants in the program provide outpatient mental health, substance abuse disorder and primary care screening services for individuals regardless of age, residency or ability to pay.
Thresholds currently has three other CCBHCs open in Illinois, including locations in Kankakee, McHenry and in Ravenswood on Chicago’s North Side. These clinics ensure access to crisis care at all hours, coordination with hospitals, law enforcement and schools, plus access to high-quality services including medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to help stop the overdose crisis.
CONGRESSMAN DANNY K. DAVIS
HIGHLIGHTS KEY ISSUES ON MILWAUKEE RADIO SHOW AS SURROGATE FOR VP KAMALA HARRIS AND GOVERNOR TIM WALZ
Chicago, IL – Congressman Danny K. Davis (IL-07) appeared on Milwaukee’s WNOV 860 AM, serving as a surrogate for Vice President Kamala Harris and Governor Tim Walz. During his live interview on the “Community Voice” radio show hosted by Keith Parris, Congressman Davis emphasized the importance of the upcoming election. He highlighted the stark differences between the Harris-Walz campaign and Donald Trump’s Project 2025 agenda.
Davis focused on Vice President Harris’ vision for a “New Way Forward,” which centers on expanding opportunities for all Americans, particularly the middle class and working families. He also addressed the risks of unchecked power that Donald Trump’s Project 2025 would bring, calling out Trump’s dangerous policies that prioritize billionaires and corporations over working people.
Davis also spoke about the Harris-Walz campaign’s robust efforts to engage Black voters, particularly in Wisconsin. He noted that the Democratic campaign infrastructure in the state has never been stronger, with over 50 offices in key areas and more than 250 fulltime staffers on the ground working to reach voters in both red and blue counties.
Crowned Skin Fills The Need For Black Men’s Skincare

Because of what his father instilled in him, real estate is one of Spencer’s investment strategies.
“Watching my dad really come from nothing and build a portfolio of real estate and find success in life for his family is really what made me realize there’s so much more to life than clocking in at a 9 to 5. I saw my dad, he worked a 9 to 5, but beyond that, he viewed real estate as an additional method and mode to build success,” Spencer said.
Spencer had a long career in digital advertising, working for some of the biggest tech firms, including LinkedIn, Google and Pinterest. He helped to scale companies with their paid ads. He gained so many insights through that work that he wanted to do it for himself. So, he started to do it for his own businesses.
Crowned Skin is Spencer’s second company. The 28-year old’s first company was Kings Crowning, which has satin-lined products for men’s hair, including turbans, hoodies, hats and haircare products. With both companies, Spencer created them to fill a need and gap in the market. There aren’t many skincare companies that cater to Black men. With Crowned Skin, Spencer wanted to create products that men would feel comfortable wearing to work, to break down the stigma of men and skincare and men in beauty.
“One of my passions is skincare, I love taking care of my skin. I also love to smell great, too. So, I wanted to combine infused colognes and body butters,” Spencer said.
mones, which are scientifically proven for attraction. There also are body oils. While all the scents are Spencer’s favorite, the newest fragrance Prince, has a unique scent, it is oceanic and woody at the same time, and lasts all day.
Men can put the body butters on their skin, while also having the benefits of wearing cologne. Infusing the body butters with pheromones is a way to combine skincare and science. Men get the moisturizing benefits of shea butter, mango butter, the fragrant benefits of cologne and phero-
Spencer said that the reviews from the men who have purchased the skincare talk about men being approached by women to ask what they are wearing, because they smell so good. He said the body butters really do give men confidence, and it is fulfilling for him that men are flocking to his products.
Spencer said since Crowned Skin was launched in April 2024, the products have gone viral and have been a huge sensation. The company has generated seven figures, which has Spencer really excited about the future of the company.
Spencer is going into the community talking about why skincare is necessary for Black men, as well as having conversations around self-care. He wants to see more men take care of themselves.
Spencer wants more conversation around the unique need for Black men’s skincare. He has been very vocal, through social media, to talk about why Black men’s skincare matters. He said more men are seeing the need for skincare and asking what other products are available from the Crowned Skin line. Crowned Skin is set to launch soap bars, because Spencer heardhis customers when they asked for it.
Spencer’s advice for aspiring entrepreneurs is for them not to be afraid to step out there, create a clear path and create their resources by teaching themselves through research. He said when people do that, the rest will follow.
“You can’t allow lack of resources or what you do and don’t know to prevent you from walking through that door. So, create the door, walk straight through it and do it afraid,” he said.

Giannoulias’ Office Accepting John Lewis Youth Leadership
Award Nominations
The Illinois Secretary of State’s office is accepting applications for the 2024 John Lewis Youth Leadership Award (JLYLA), Secretary Alexi Giannoulias announced. The award celebrates the efforts of young Illinoisans between the ages of 18 to 25 who have made exceptional civic contributions to their communities.
The John Lewis Youth Leadership Award, established by the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS), honors the late Congressman John Lewis’ impact and extraordinary accomplishments throughout his career. Lewis advocated for civil and voting rights and consistently encouraged young people to actively participate in the democratic process. In his youth, Lewis was integral to the Civil Rights Movement as chairman of the Student Nonviolence Coordinating Committee (SNCC), one of the original 13 Freedom Riders and one of the lead organizers of the March on Washington.
“John Lewis dedicated his life to bringing equality, freedom and justice to everyone and altered the course of history for the better,” Giannoulias said. “In partnership with the National Association of Secretaries of State, I could not be more excited to recognize a young Illinoisan who has been inspired to carry on the mission and legacy of this iconic freedom fighter.”
Dasha Pates, last year’s inaugural recipient, earned the award through her work improving access to legal services in Kane County. Working with JusticeCorps, she provided disenfranchised residents of Kane County with legal information and procedural guidance at the Kane County Law Library &
Self-Help Legal Center.
“Receiving the inaugural John Lewis Youth Leadership Award has been a life-changing experience for me,” Pates said.
The influence of the John Lewis Youth Leadership Award extends far beyond the recipients themselves. The award inspires other young individuals to get involved and make a difference in their communities by acknowledging and celebrating youth activism. It also sends a powerful message that age is not a barrier to creating change and that every voice matters in shaping the future of America.
Any member of the public can nominate a young Illinois leader, whether they are a student, coworker, neighbor, parent, fellow volunteer or community member.
Interested applicants or nominators can access the application at www.ilsos.gov/JohnLewisAward.
Application Process
A successful applicant to Illinois’ JLYLA process must include:

Deciding when and how to share your diagnosis with others can be a deeply personal choice. Many people living with Alzheimer’s have found that openly discussing their diagnosis with family, friends, and colleagues can create a network of support. While it may be difficult, being transparent about your condition can help others understand what you’re going through and how they can assist. Those who have faced this journey suggest starting with those closest to you and gradually expanding the conversation when you’re ready.
An Alzheimer’s diagnosis can also bring shifts in your relationships with family, friends, and colleagues. Some people may not fully understand your condition or may struggle with how to interact with you. This can be challenging, but many find that open communication helps. Letting your loved ones know how they can support you—and being patient with their learning process—can strengthen your relationships during this time.
Self-care is crucial when living with Alzheimer’s. This means tending to your physical, emotional, social, and spiritual wellbeing. Staying active, engaging in hobbies, maintaining social connections, and continuing to participate in activities you enjoy can all contribute to a higher quality of life. The Alzheimer’s Association offers tips and tools to help you maintain a sense of purpose and joy while living with the disease.
Stress can take a toll on your health and quality of life, especially after an Alzheimer’s diagnosis. Taking steps to reduce stress—such as practicing mindfulness, engaging in physical activity, or participating in support groups—can improve your overall well-being. Finding ways to relax and manage stress will be key to maintaining balance as you face the challenges ahead.
Daily life may become more complex as the disease progresses, but there are strategies that can help. Establishing routines, using memory aids, and adapting your living environment can help you manage day-to-day tasks more easily. These coping strategies will allow you to maintain a sense of independence and control over your life for as long as possible.
As your family and friends adjust to your diagnosis, they may need guidance on how to best support you. You can help them by being open about your needs and preferences. The Alzheimer’s Association offers resources specifically designed to help your loved ones understand the disease and how they can be there for you during this time.
Remember, you are not alone on this journey. Help and support are available, and by taking proactive steps, you can live your life to the fullest while managing Alzheimer’s.
As families navigate these conversations and decisions, proactive planning and open dialogue can help ensure a smoother transition and promote safety for everyone involved.

DSU first HBCU to launch private merchandise label
(Black PR Wire) DSU’s private label will provide an expanded opportunity to control the design, quality, and variety of products that students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the community wear and purchase. The brand inventory will include various types of limited-edition merchandise that will only be available directly from the University, and 5 percent of the sales will support student success by funding scholarships.
Everything Collegiate, owned and operated by Terance Harmon for over 20 years, holds more than 85 brand licenses for colleges, societies, and fraternities. As a primary vendor to over 60 colleges, including 39 HBCUs, it provides thousands of custom collegiate products including apparel, shoes, and giveaway items.
“This partnership marks a significant milestone in our journey,” said Harmon. “Our goal has always been to support and uplift HBCUs, and working with DSU has been a fulfilling step in that direction. I am excited to work with DSU on this historic move.”
DSU initially partnered with Everything Collegiate on a launch of merchandise last year at the time of the University’s branding update.
“Thanks to our team, the designs were met with an overwhelmingly positive response,” said Dr. Dawn Mosley, Senior Associate Vice President of Marketing and Communications. “Our students, faculty, staff,
and alumni were thrilled with the new products and kept asking for more. The key difference was that we had control over the design process, working closely to ensure it resonated with our brand and audience. It made perfect sense, as we best know what our audience wants.”
The partnership will begin with a select choice of merchandise for which Everything Collegiate will manage the distribution while continuing to assist DSU in growing its private brand inventory in additional retail spaces and online. This will allow the University’s products to reach a wider audience
while maintaining high standards of quality and authenticity.
“We’re no longer restricted to buying premade or mass-produced products that follow a standard design with our logo incorporated within,” Dr. Mosley said. “That’s not true ownership. We must protect what has taken over a century to build.”
However, existing relationships with retailers will continue to be a valuable resource for students and the campus community to purchase everyday branded items.
“We are not competing with our campus stores or partners who sell merchandise with our brand. We value their contributions and the royalties they generate,” Dr. Mosley said. “It’s simply smart business to establish our own revenue stream from custom products. This also creates an exciting opportunity for our students and alumni to share their unique design ideas, which can further support scholarships for our students.”
The first round of student scholarships from initial product sales will be awarded in spring 2025. Moving forward, new-arrival merchandise will now feature the Hornets (tm) private-label branding. For early sales, click here or visit https://hbcudsu. com.

A multi-faceted and hyperactive woman, Berite Labelle was chosen in 2024 by Balmain to embody the new global campaign for the French house, marking the 50th anniversary of the haircare line. Any time a person pays their premiums for 10, 20 and 30 years. Only to have their premiums go up or the coverage run out, shame on that agent.
97% of all term policies never pay out a claim. This is due to most people letting their policies lapse the companies know the policy is going to lapse. Google the statistics for yourself.
What people don’t understand about universal life is that the payment goes up every year. But you’re paying the same amount, then 10, 20 years later your policy lapses.
You never hear from that agent, or he or she is out of the business.

Equal Hope addresses barriers women of color face when it comes to screening and treating cancer including lack of transportation to medical centers, lack of insurance, work schedule conflicts, lack of childcare, concerns ignored by physicians and the lack of consistent quality care depending on where patients go for care.
Breast Cancer rates nationwide are disproportionately higher among Black, brown and other women of color in underserved and unserved communities. In Chicago , t he communities with the highest mortality rates are located on the South and West s ides of the city. These communities are predominantly African American and Latino.
In 2023, Equal Hope’s outreach efforts reached more than 475,844 individuals, nearly 20% of Chicago’s population. Initiatives included distributing more than 106,320 flyers throughout Cook and Lake counties, providing more than 513 rides to health screenings, scheduling 3,117 appointments, and establishing primary care for 322 individuals.

Learn How Reverse Mortgages Can Affect Estate Planning
Reverse mortgages are one of the most misunderstood financial tools directed to the elderly. It is my intent to help dissuade the negative opinion that people hold towards reverse mortgages. Too often disdain is based on myths and hearsay, not fact.
Bren Sheriff
Here is a fact, a reverse mortgage is a financial tool, but it is not the right tool for every financial situation. When considering a reverse mortgage
There should be a planned outcome.
Here are some outcomes of getting a reverse mortgage:
-to lower monthly expenses.
-receiving tax free income from home equity.
-it allows a person to age at home
The myths that prevail are as follow:
-the ownership of homes is immediately transferred to the government
-a reverse mortgage NEVER has to be re-paid.
Elders, prior to receiving a reverse mortgage, must attend a training class. The training is to explain how a reverse mortgage works. However, it has been my experience that, even with the training, too often elders do not fully understand the terms of their reverse mortgage and how it affects their families.
In future columns, I will share scenarios of elders with reverse mortgages and what impact this may have on their estate plans.
Bye for now,
Bren.

Diabetes and Your Feet, What You Need to Know
(StatePoint) Foot ulcers develop in about 15% of the 25 million Americans living with diabetes and are a top cause of hospitalization. These ulcers can lead to serious complications, such as infection and amputation. According to foot and ankle surgeons, there are steps you can take to prevent complications and keep your feet healthy, as well as breakthrough treatments that are saving limbs, restoring mobility and improving lives.
“The majority of lower-extremity amputations are preceded by a reoccurring foot sore or an ulcer that won’t heal,” says John S. Steinberg, DPM, FACFAS, a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon and a Fellow Member and Past President of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS). “Patients do best when they take charge of their foot health with the help of a foot and ankle surgeon.”
The surgeon members of ACFAS are sharing some important insights into preventing foot ulcers associated with diabetes and treating them if they do occur.
Make these precautions part of your foot care routine:
• Inspect feet daily using a flashlight and mirror to see the bottoms of your feet.
• Moisturize dry, cracking feet to prevent sores. Use powder to control moisture that can result in blisters.
• To prevent injury, wear protective, well-fitting shoes and socks at all times, even in the house.
Change socks daily and more often if your feet get wet or sweaty. Avoid socks with holes or seams. Sometimes diabetic shoes are prescribed to avoid pressure and rubbing on the feet.
• Get regular foot exams from a foot and ankle surgeon, which can reduce amputation risk by 4585%. The surgeon can also screen feet for loss of protective sensation.
PHOTO SOURCE: (c) Siarhei Khaletski / iStock via Getty Images Plus
• Manage your diabetes. Out-of-control blood sugar levels can lead to nerve cell damage, making it harder to detect foot problems.
Look for telltale signs that an ulcer may be developing:
• Swelling. The foot or ankle may look puffy or engorged and larger than the other.
• Temperature. Cold feet might mean a circulatory issue, whereas hot feet might mean infection.
• Color changes. Redness and even other colors might appear before an ulcer forms.
• Calluses. If a callus changes colors or develops dark, “dried blood” colored spots, it may be time to have a foot and ankle surgeon offer a proper diagnosis.
Ask your foot and ankle surgeon about innovative treatments:
If you do experience a non-healing ulcer, talk to your foot and ankle surgeon right away about
innovative technologies that stimulate healing. Groundbreaking approaches include stem cell therapy, the use of bioengineered skin substitutes to accelerate growth of healthy skin, and negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) to promote healing and enable healthy, new tissue to grow. Today, foot and ankle surgeons rarely do a skin graft without NPWT. Skin grafting for foot ulcers has also advanced. Surgeons now use advanced reconstructive surgery and grafting techniques to promote wound healing and decrease wound recurrence.
The success rate of these advanced therapies is high, providing substantial improvement over treatments of the not-too-distant past, when doctors would clean and bandage the wound and hope for the best.
“Thanks to the many advances in diabetic foot care, patients today are having simpler surgeries, avoiding amputations, and getting back to everyday life sooner than ever before,” says Dr. Steinberg.
